LIES OF P GOT NOMINATIONS!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm already happy for these nominations ( for now cause the whole franchise is still starting it's own career ), it's alright for me that it didn't got a nomination for GOTY.
I just wished it got nominated too for the Best Debut Indie game. And it's very clear why. No?
Still, CONGRATULATIONS TO US! 💙

If I Was In Charge of AG:
Historical Line:
I wouldn’t necessarily bring back all the Historical characters. I feel like some characters haven’t stood the test of time, and rightfully reside in the vault. Felicity’s stories are incredibly dismissive to the presence of slavery, Maryellen’s gloss over disability and 1950s racism, Courtney is Courtney, and Julie is Julie. I would pull back all the characters in a world where that wouldn’t loose AG thousands, and keep the few that do stand the test of time (Kaya, Josefina, Caroline, Marie Grace, Cecile, Addy, Samantha, Nellie, Rebecca, Nanea, Melody, Ivy, etc..). The other characters (who aren’t bad, don’t get me wrong), would be reworked so the line was more diverse. Each character would at least have meet accessories, a bed, a second outfit, and pajamas, as well as any “staple” accessories from their books, that would always be available.
GOTY Line:
I feel like the GOTY line had its hay day in the 2010s, but I wouldn’t get rid of it completely. I’d bring back the exclusivity, however, well selling dolls like Luciana would get moved to a contemporary line at the end of the year, where they would receive a new meet outfit and accessories. This would get rid of dead weight (cough cough Blaire and Kira cough cough) that AG seems to be struggling with with their new three year retirement system, while keeping in the dolls that are giving them money.
Truly Me:
The Truly Me line is both genius and stupid. The idea of a blank slate doll is alluring, but the practice of it is chaotic, especially when these dolls are marketed as supposedly being in resemblance to the owner (even if AG is trying to abandon this, it’s still heavily implied). I feel like it’s also difficult to represent most groups of children with only fifteen-twenty available dolls. I’m not quite sure how one would go about fixing this issue, in an ideal world, I’d suggest replacing Truly Mes with the CYO line, but that’s not very practical.
I do like the theming AG has taken on in recent years, although using child influencers rubs me the wrong way. I think it could be cool to instead use older teen and adult role models, and every “season” could introduce a new profession with a new set of role models, with a new collection designed by them. Perhaps there could be a new book series introduced in addition to the smart girls guide series, where it talks about different professions, and how to get there!!
In terms of representing children with disability, I don’t think it’s completely fair that most of the disability related accessories are an additional price. I feel like any medical related set could be 25%-50% off when purchased with a doll, just so it’s a bit more fair for those who want to see themselves represented, but don’t have a lot of money in addition to the $120+ they’re already spending on a doll.
CYO Line:
Alright, AG needs more face molds. Like, desperately. And not just used for one doll and then thrown away. We need more than one Asian mold (let’s face it, the sonali mold has been co-opted as another mold for black characters, and I don’t see AG bringing back the number #4 mold as it’s a bit controversial). We need a molds with more pronounced noses that is not the josefina mold. We need molds that explicitly represent mixed ethnicities (Jess and Addy mold crossbetween??), etc etc you get the point.
We need more eye color options, I could see the old style green eyes doing really well, as well as a couple extra shades of brown. I feel like freckle patterns would also be an easy thing to expand on, at least the very least offering different colors of freckles to choose from (red?? darker brown??). AG could also probably find a market in adding more common skin conditions (vitiligo, scars).
I feel like AG could very easily add limb difference options to the CYO GUI. Options for no limb or half a limb, a prosthetic or no?? Idk, I just find it a bit stupid that they’re relying on third party charities to provide representation, when brands like OG have figured themselves out.
Finally, more hair options. Why is there only one textured wig option?? Would it be that difficult to add a medium length textured wig, or a textured wig with bangs? Can we get a curly style about the same length as the straight pixie cut they offer? Also, I’d add a star rating system for parents based on how much of a pain each wig is to take care of, aha.

Settos GOTY 2020
2020 was a hell world and life is dogshit now. Also I only browse tumblr these days but I like keeping track of this stuff so!...yay.
I’m gonna be honest even I’m not sure what order I should put these games in.
I think I’m done with ordering by top 10 and just gonna put all 10 here equally.
I’ll also show some games I liked for specific reasons but didn’t put in the top 10.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Tumblr media
Probably my second favourite Yakuza game ever, Like a Dragon introduces Ichiban as a new protagonist and boy is he a keeper. This keeps that classic Yakuza charm and good writing along with a new gameplay style of JRPG turn based combat. It’s fun, engaging and genuinely full of a love for the genre. I can’t wait to see the future of Ichibans adventures.
Nioh 2
Tumblr media
I genuinely love this game. The soulslike genre has been all over the place the last few years but this one deserves the award for the most complex and well done entry in the genre. Everything about Nioh 2 kept me playing through the game multiple times. It truly is a game where you can build your character in so many different ways that you won’t ever play the same way twice.
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Tumblr media
I’ll always love AC. New Horizons has a load of new wonderful features but is lacking a lot of what made previous entries so wonderful. I’m kinda tired of being drip fed content that was just in New Leaf from the get go. Other than that I enjoy the time I spend wandering around my island and customizing it to my liking. A very comfortable experience, that was well needed.
Disaster Report 4
Tumblr media
Honestly one of the most endearing games I played this year. You can tell the developers had a lot of passion and despite the unbelievable jank, it shines in many places. This game had so many memorable moments and characters that overall I just fell in love with it. It really drives home the feeling of being in a natural disaster and seeing the cataclysmic destruction it leaves on not only the country but also peoples lives.
Sakura Wars
Tumblr media
I’m probably bias because I’ve never played the RPG entries in this series. However I loved the character driven story and general way the game played out. I can’t really say much else, I just adored being in this world and seeing these characters grow together. The gameplay is alright, it’s basic mech based action combat, but I don’t think that’s the big draw here. Azami best girl.
Pokemon SWSH DLC
Tumblr media
Can you spot the Galarian Moltres in the above picture?.
I actually loved SWSH, it’s got a load of problems but the overworld and raid dungeons made me play for far longer than I ever thought I would. Honestly the DLC just made the region even better designed and felt like a breathing Pokemon world. I’ll still buy new Pokemon games constantly because I adore their designs and the characters and just everything about the series.
Hades
Tumblr media
I liked Greek mythology before it was cool.
Hades really drives home the narrative between these famous chracters of Greek mythos. It’s got such good writing with almost always new things to say every time you do anything in game.
The gameplay is a lot of fun and honestly it’s more of a bridge to progressing your dynamic with everyone. I couldn’t be happier it’s getting the recognition it deserves.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Tumblr media
A genuinely fun game that builds on the musou style combat in massive ways. Every character feels incredibly unique and the gameplay loop keeps remaining fun. Honestly I can’t say much else. It’s a fun Musou game built on a familiar franchise. If you like them, you probably already own it.
Clubhouse Games 51
Tumblr media
I mean it’s 51 board games with online play, designed by Nintendo.
It’s fun as hell and has Koi Koi, Of course I bought this.
If you like board games, you probably bought this too. It’s good, get it.
MOON
Tumblr media
MOON was never translated upon its original release on PS1. It was a game a younger me looked at and it really set in my mind what I love about videogames.
Designed by the same team as things like Chulip, it takes a familiar formula and turns it on its head. MOON out of all games i’ve mentioned here, really set in stone the idea of what an RPG could be about and how characters could be developed through the game design.
Playing it fully translated, it’s really clear to me how much of an inspiration this game probably was for a lot of more indie based developers and their games.
MOON makes me feel something I don’t feel often in games and that’s that something like this is so special it only comes around every now and then.
This game means a lot to me and really is a seal of actual wonder that I wish I could see more often. A message of Love and care and just genuine passion seeps through the entire thing.
If I was gonna give GOTY to a game it’d probably be this but I feel it’s worth more than that. MOON really establishes what I feel is a high point for all videogames.
Anyway here’s some other games I really enjoyed. I won’t talk about them much but i’ll put them here
Tumblr media
Immortals: Fenyx Rising just came out and is...just a lot of fun. Buy it.
Tumblr media
Kamen Rider: Memory of Heroez is a decent low budget action game with a lot of fanservice for toku fans.
Tumblr media
No Straight Roads isn’t.....the best as a videogame. But it’s gorgeous to look at and genuinely funny and creative.
Tumblr media
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is lovely and well worth playing if you wanna farm rice and fight demons as a small angry goddess.
Tumblr media
The Pathless is a very nice game that reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus a lot. It’s a lot of fun to explore and solve puzzles, while keeping a good flow with movement and ....may be connected to Abzu which is cool. It’s also very pretty.
A final game that hasn’t even come out yet but I know I will love is
Tumblr media
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.....I mean It’s Puyo Tetris so ...yeah it’s good.
I hope you all have a good 2021 and a good holiday season. 2020 was awful but you hang in there, okay?.

Persona 5 Royal Thoughts
Tumblr media
Alright so there’s a lot I want to talk about here. Fair warning, this write up is actually like, really damn long. Also like HUGE spoiler warning below the cut! I played the original when it came out, bought a PS4 practically only to play Persona 5 not even knowing if I’d like it. But I did! I loved it, loved all of it. Beat the game in just over 100 hours I think. Easily became my second favorite game ever. So now here comes Persona 5 Royal, adds a bunch of new stuff, a lot of little stuff and some pretty huge additions and reworks, includes all the dlc from P5 which is nice. It’s a strictly better version of the game I already thought was amazing enough.
I remember being a little wary of going for it and reading a non-spoiler list of all the changes, which are actually A LOT when you list them out. Then I thought about how much I loved playing the original, and figured I’m not doing much else right now, so I got it. And BOY that game just checks all the boxes for me. It’s the same game, but better now. There’s a little more depth to playing the game and more stuff!
Tumblr media
One of the biggest additions and probably my favorite addition is Maruki’s story and confidant. Everything involving him I thought was incredible. First of all the man is a dreamboat. Secondly great voice actor. Thirdly the story built around him was really awesome to play through. Every time some new story beats came through while playing through the first parts of the game I always thought how great it all fit in. It made sense, it kind of opened up the world of the game a little more narrative-wise and it all felt right. And the SONG (Ideal and the Real) that plays in Maruki’s office is so GOOD. That song plays in my head 24/7 and I love it. He’s got such a great personality and story and it was a great time getting to rank him up. The song ALONE made me want to hang out with him as much as possible. It’s an angle I wasn’t expecting, his story I mean, and while the “right” choice was pretty clear, it still made me think about what he was trying to accomplish. And they drove the point home real hard during the final stretch of the game before you figure out what’s going. It’s so hard to look at your friends having such a good life and go, “yeah no I don’t think so.” But that’s a whole different  discussion. It felt sort of morally ambiguous, which was really cool. And I also like that Maruki gives you a choice, not only once but twice. Which again, gives you pause, even if only a short one.
So that brings me to another one of the biggest additions: the new palace. BOY I love this palace. From the way it’s first introduced so early on, to how you keep peeking in every once in a while making a little progress here and there. Until finally you’re able to just go wild at the end. This palace feels like the team designing this was told go all out. The aesthetic, the mechanics, the layout. Going through this I had a big ol smile on my face the entire time at how different it felt compared to those in the original game. Those are good too, don’t get me wrong. I don’t have any palaces I dislike. But I can easily imagine some ideas and how incredible some palaces would be with the level of detail and complexity of Maruki’s palace. It’d be kind of ridiculous and extremely difficult no doubt, maybe even a little too much to ask for I think. Anyway, seeing the garden section of the palace for the first time was INCREDIBLE. They went so crazy with making almost every part of that palace look amazing! And that last area was easily my favorite of the palaces in terms of looks and theme. They did a good job of conveying the scale of that giant tree where the treasure is at with those stairs. Plus it’s another great moment to show of the smaller details of the palace like some flowers, the lighting, some other really neat effects. It was great! And the whole boss fight at the end was so fantastic to watch! I’ll say that even at the hardest difficulty, my SO (who is a turn-based combat FIEND) didnt have too much of a difficult time with the fight. But the mechanics of it were so interesting! I loved the ideas they went with. Again it felt like they really gave it their all with this palace. The story beats during the fight were incredible as well, and they gave me one of my favorite moments back that used to be in the Yaldabaoth fight: Press X to Fire! The fight with Maruki at the end was also pretty novel too, and so dramatic! The snow falling at the end, the glass platforms collapsing, it all looked so GOOD. One of my favorite things in any game like this (remake/remaster/GOTY version/etc.) is getting to listen to NEW MUSIC. And this palace KILLED IT with music, as did the rest of the game as usual. There’s no feeling that compares to being right at the edge of beating a Persona game. And this palace was a hell of an out of the park home run. After 170 hours, it was so bittersweet to beat the final boss and move on towards the rest of the story. I loved playing through that palace and it’s a shame I’ll never get to experience it for the first time again.
Tumblr media
On to one of the more advertised additions: Yoshizawa! My first thought when I saw her way back when when they first revealed her is I thought she’d be a female protagonist. Which I thought would be INCREDIBLE. Even if it’s not exactly my preference, I would’ve been so HYPE to romance one of the guys. I didn’t really think about it from a gameplay standpoint, as there are way more girl confidants than guys, but still I thought it’d be fun to potentially explore that! Obviously that wasn’t the case, but now on to what I think of the new confidant! I love her! Like absolutely 100% love her so much! Let me tell you just how those concept meetings went down when they were making Yoshizawa: Cute girl, in cute clothes, who has a cute personality. Done, the perfect character. Of course she’s much more than that, but on the surface level it’s easy to see where they were going with this character. Playing the game I had zero idea about her eventual involvement in the final section of the game, so seeing her only have 5 confidant levels I was a little disappointed! Maxed her out as fast as possible and waited... Seeing her story woven through the original narrative was also super fun. Like Maruki, I really liked seeing her in places where she wasn’t before, and adding new scenes and such around to flesh out her character throughout the first two semesters. Then came the new part of the game after the holy grail fight. I was absolutely not expecting that twist with Yoshizawa. I had no idea that they would go somewhere like THAT in this game! It totally caught me off guard and I LOVED IT. What an incredible story all around. And like super fucked! The whole reveal moment was FANTASTIC! Had my jaw on the floor and everything! Her entire confidant was fun, using her in combat was fun, and her romance path was extremely fun! There’s nothing I don’t like about her really. She had such a wild story and such an amazing arc that I can’t not love her! She’s not my favorite confidant, but still adding in a new character like her into such a tight-knit group like the phantom thieves that i already loved as is is such a risky move! It’s so hard to improve upon a dynamic like theirs I think, but they made it work when they needed to! Anyway I love her character a lot and her story and all that. Beautiful.
Tumblr media
Speaking of adding new characters to a dynamic, this might be my favorite addition/rework in the entire game: Akechi. Holy crap I can’t tell you how much I LOVED HEARING AKECHI JUST GO OFF EVERY BATTLE, or while we went riding through mementos, or just all his new dialogue and confidant level ups. Akechi very quickly and easily became one of my favorite parts about the new part of the game. His character was such a HUGE CLASH with every other character in the party, especially Yoshizawa! Which I have to imagine isn’t an accident. He is fuckin CRAZY. Unlocking his Showtime attack was BONKERS. That whole sequence with Yoshizawa and Akechi in Maruki’s palace was so GOOD. Having Akechi be part of the team was an amazing breath of fresh of air. Trust me when I say I have ZERO problem or complaint with the overly positive nature of the party. But MAN it is FUN to see Akechi just be an ABSOLUTE ASSHOLE. Every new interaction with Akechi was a TREASURE. Dropping the “detective prince” act was 100000% the right move. Even more fun was seeing Haru and Akechi’s interactions in mementos. The way every character acted towards him was pretty good, but something about Haru’s overbearing positivity towards him was really fun to watch. I can’t stress enough how much Akechi added to the experience of the final act of the game. His persona? Badass. His personality? Absolutely cutthroat and also badass. His hair? Still incredible. Also the only character in the game who will only play 701 in darts. That threw me for a fuckin LOOP the first time I invited him out for darts. Dude is a STUD in like every way. Love Akechi A LOT. He singlehandedly brought the experience up from an 11/10 to a 12/10. This game is so much better with Akechi being able to go batshit crazy. One of my favorite interactions is during battle: when you heal the whole party, with Akechi and Ryuji being two of the active members, depending on their order, you’ll have Akechi say “No time for thanks” right before you hear Ryuji say “Thanks!” Just thought that really exemplified how much of an ass he is, and how much I love him for it. He is THE badass asshole character this game didn’t know it needed but absolutely deserved. How much of a bad ass do you have to be to able to look at your inevitable death in the face and say “this is how it has to be.” One of the coolest parts of the whole game is him not only accepting his eventual fate, but actively driving you towards making that decision.
Next up I suppose I’ll talk about Maruki as a character. Love the way he was included, and liked all his interactions with all the characters during the first part of the game. He’s just so likable and honestly very relatable for me. Helping people through counseling has always been a personal goal of mine, so it’s always interesting to see how characters doing the same are portrayed. And while his overarching plan is something I don’t agree with, wanting to help people drives you to do crazy things sometimes. I felt for the guy. I enjoyed all the hangouts with him, and felt like I really understood his goals. The way his entire story was crafted did an incredible job of divulging all the right information at the right time. Before Akechi 2.0 came around, he was my favorite part of the game! I love the confidants and the stories they tell and interacting with them and all that. I looked forward to ranking up Maruki and trying to see what he was all about. The more I learned the more I liked him. Before, during, and after the palace my feelings about him didn’t change much. The man went crazy sure, but I still couldn’t bring myself to hate him or even dislike him. I love the man! My SO had no mercy for the man during the boss fight, but I felt bad seeing her kick his ass! I thought they did a good job mixing up the motivations for Maruki as a villain. Making him a confidant made it so much more difficult to picture him as the big bad evil guy. Plus he has like one of the best songs tied to him in Ideal and the Real. I’ll mention that as much as I feel is necessary.
Tumblr media
So now I’ll go through all of the smaller details that I really liked in no particular order. Kichijoji was a great destination, gave me a lot to do over the course of the game. The phone calls after you hang out with a confidant are a very welcome addition! It’s a way to fit in more dialogue which I always love, and gives you a chance to rank up the confidant a lot quicker. There’s the fact that Morgana no longer forces you to sleep nearly as often, letting you at least mess around in LeBlanc, which helps rank up your social stats. I LOVE THE DARTS MINI GAME. And I’m so glad it also gave you an upgrade for your baton passes. I did not play enough darts. The jazz club was also MY JAM. Again more dialogue, great music, and a fun way to give your confidants new skills or stat boosts. One thing that I find really funny is the way they handled Valentine’s Day. They CHANGED IT. I know they added a lot of new stuff to them for new story reasons. but they CHANGED THE CONTEXT OF THE DATES. For example, in the original P5, Kawakami makes it VERY CLEAR what’s going down later. Ann too! But in P5R, that context is GONE LMAO they really went and changed the dialogue to be less sexual. It’s strange, but mostly I found it funny considering Takemi’s max rank conversation is untouched, among plenty of other ones. Anyway White Day was a GREAT addition! The final part of the date overlooking the city is AMAZING. That reveal made my jaw drop. Speaking of things that changed, the Christmas date also changed, and I like the change a lot! Watching the snow fall from the window on the bed was a great touch. The changes to boss battles and some parts of palaces because of the grappling hook were very welcome. The grappling hook itself was also extremely handy. The thieves den is an incredible addition that adds SO MUCH NEW DIALOGUE AND CONTEXT THAT IT’S A CRIME THAT IT’S HIDDEN IN THE DEN! Anyway. I’ll never say no to new personas. The showtime attacks are a GEM. The new music in this game is AWESOME. I can’t stop listening to the soundtrack. I really enjoyed getting to see a little bit of the dynamic between Sojiro, Futaba and Wakaba. I never knew just how much I wanted to see that until I saw the bit of it in the late part of the game. I don’t remember if it was in the original game, but I LOVE that one of Yusuke’s battle lines is “How do you want to do this?” LOVE IT. Oh Chihaya’s confidant boosting fortune reading was SUPER CLUTCH. Extremely good quality of life right there. I love the extra little bit they added to the warden’s confidant, getting to take them out of the velvet room and show them around. Super cute. Iwai’s gun customization was pretty sweet. Adding Jose to mementos was strange, but very welcome! It made going around much more interesting. Oh speaking of, buffing Ryuji’s instant kill was a GREAT idea. Haha Morgana go vroom vroom. The alarm in the velvet room was also awesome and made making the perfect persona a million times easier.
Tumblr media
It’s been a few weeks now since I’ve finished the game, and it’s unfortunate that I can’t remember more of the little things. This whole write up has been an on and off thing since I finished P5R. Still I love the game and don’t really have any complaints. Well maybe one: LET ME FEED YUSUKE. Someone please feed that man. I forgot how much I loved playing the original game, and going through it again with all the new stuff was a total pleasure! And obviously the 3rd semester was an incredible experience. If you like the original a lot, and it’s been a while since you played it, get P5R. If you never played the original but were interested in it, get P5R. Anyway that’s all I got to say about it.

Retrospective Thought: Top Ten Games of 2017
Another year goes by, and another list of games that I thought were stellar, great and splendid to play. 2016 was a pretty alright year for games, but this year, with a myriad of stellar as fuck releases? personally blew the previous year out of the water with some stellar as hell titles, new IPs or new entries in existing franchises. As good as games this year might be, 2017 was NOT without its controversy, specifically the rise of Loot Boxes(thank you EA, Activision-Blizzard). Nonetheless, without further waiting, here’s my top ten games of 2017.
10) Yakuza 0(PS4) -
I’m a huge fan of the Yakuza series, seeing it as the last bastion of good Sega Games made by Sega themselves, despite their continuation of fuckin up Sonic. Yakuza 0 is basically a prequel, set before the events of the original game and putting you in the shoes of a young Kazuma and a young Majima Goro. The action is ridiculously fun and over the top as previous entries, including a new Fighting Style that allows you to switch between styles for varying strategies against waves of foes. The story is still as crazy, funny, emotionally gripping and tense as one can get from a Crime Drama centered around the Yakuza. The characters are all larger than life, greatly developed and just a pleasure to see, whether its new guys just for this entry or returning characters at a younger period of their lives. Pick this game up if you haven’t played the Yakuza games, it’s a great starting point. Pick it up if you’re a fan of the series too.
9) Nioh (PS4/WIN) -
Tecmo Koei’s “Dark Souls” only it’s set in Feudal Japan, post Nobunaga. Originally, this title was expected to be out in 2004, but was kicked into development Hell until it’s re-announcement in 2015/16. Following the adventures of William Blake as he searches for Guardian Spirit who has been taken by the evil Edward Kelley. William meets many allies, some who may sacrifice themselves to help him help Japan’s Amrita problem. the gameplay is great and greatly fun, solid and responsive as it needs to be. It blends both the flashy badassery of Dynasty Warriors and the tense, pulse pounding grit of Dark Souls. While playing second fiddle to the gameplay and loot system, the story is delightfully cheesy and over the top, it’s hilarious in most parts and well worth getting engaged in. Buy it for your DW/DS/both DS and DW fix.
8) Resident Evil 7(PS4/WIN/XO) -
Resident Evil needed a dire rehaul, reinvention and a total reimagining from the ground up. RE6 was a dumpster filled with half ideas and lazy gameplay. Resi Evil 7 was teased, showing a rather stylistic change, possibly to jump on the hype left by Silent Hills, but nonetheless it ended up working for the better. The scares were there, more cerebral than ever whilst taking that traditional Resi Evil feel and introverting it into quite possibly the best RE game since 4. Get it if you’ve been wanting that AAA Survival horror atmosphere, definitely worth the price.
7) Pyre(WIN/PS4) -
from the developers of Bastion and Transistor, two incredibly stellar indie titles, Supergiant Games brings out Pyre this year. You are the Reader, you’re travelling with a group of exiles taking part in these “rites” to seek your freedom and return to the commonwealth. mixing parts of an adventure, an RPG and a fucking sports game of all things, these systems and mechanics are all solidly blended together in superb fashion. The story is also one to follow as well, dealing with redemption, rebellion and even death, this is a tale in which character’s mature over time, developing into whichever way you choose throughout the game. A fabulous indie game developed by a stellar indie developer, pick this up as soon as possible.
6) South Park: The Fractured But Whole (PS4/XO/WIN) -
Admittedly, I was not expecting much from this sequel, considering how great Stick of Truth was. But Whole is a fantastic follow up and quite possibly the best licensed game that I can really think of. You follow the story of the kids, Eric and co, as they decide to play Superheroes, hoping to find a lost kitty. In classic South Park style, everyone is not safe, everything WILL be mocked and made fun of, even the “Difficulty” slider is not spared from the same bout of vicious shit flinging. If you’re familiar with South Park, or at least the previous game and it’s brand of humour, then you’ll have a great time with this one, though if you don’t particularly enjoy South Park? You may want to avoid this title. Recommended for those who love offensive humour and South Park. 5) Assassin’s Creed: Origins(PS4/WIN/XO) -
Well it seems taking a year off, retooling and rebuilding the franchise has helped GREATLY with AC:O. Ubisoft are not the greatest of developers/publishers, but I commend them for actually crafting an AC experience that is on par, if not BETTER than AC2. You follow the story of Bayek, a Medjai who’s seeking out individuals of an Order after they had killed his son. While gameplay still has those “creed-isms” Such as stealth and assassinating, the combat, ranged and melee have both been redefined from the ground up for mostly better. While it has a rocky beginning, the story for the most part is damn great, with some really impactful moments here and there, the dynamic between Bayek and his wife ground themselves in a relatable way, giving the series another “good” protagonist in a sea of “bad” ones. If you’re a fan of the series, be wary of the changes to combat, but for the most part you will love it. Buy it to see how an open world is done right. 4) Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon(3DS) -
Sun and Moon are great pokemon titles and even good games in their own right, but their “updated” iterations make a good game fantastic. Sure, it’s really a remake, but the added stuff is enough to give a second journey through Alola. More pokes to capture, wider selection of wild pokes in the earlier game, new forms and even new pokes add a much meatier experience on the gameplay side of it whilst the story is vastly improved on with added scenes and characters, giving the UBs more importance helps to make their inclusion not so last minute. While it may be harder to recommend to a passing fan, it’s definitely worth picking up if you’re a pokefan through and through. 3) Injustice 2(PS4/WIN/XO) -
I loved the original Injustice, even its mishaps, heck Mortal Kombat X was one of my GoTYs for 2015, and I still adore that game/series now. Injustice 2 takes a hard long look at it’s predecessor, looks at its shortcomings and decides to get rid of them, for better or for worse. IJ2 is a vast improvement by definition, more varied selection of fighters to choose from, a better written story plus a Villain that will make you go “Holy shit that’s dope” trust me on that. The game picks up from the last title; Batman is now running things after Dictator Chairman Supes is now put in a cell of kryptonite, whilst Supergirl wants to go rescue her cousin, Earth is in peril by the invading Brainiac, a Krypton Super-Computer who wants to collect all knowledge. The gameplay takes some elements from MKX and even improves upon them, especially the added loot system, giving you that chance to customise how your favourite DC Fighter(or Hellboy/MK/TMNT Fighters, yes even Hellboy and the Ninja Turtles are in this, take that MVC:I!). Varied roster, solid gameplay and a story that doesn’t have any right being as good as it is, a must buy for Fighting Game and DC Comics enthusiasts. 2) Persona 5(PS4) -
The Persona franchise is one of those JRPG franchises that you either love or hate, I love it if you haven’t read my review on Persona 5. The fifth(Main line, that is) in the super popular gem that is Persona is a fantastic, well written piece of JRPG goodness with music that will blow your socks off, and a story that’s goofy, hilarious yet serious, dramatic and engrossing all packed together neatly. The gameplay while standard Turn Based affair is so solid and fun and with a surprising amount of choice, since you can potentially recruit enemy personas to your team. Each character grows and develops throughout the story, with tragedy and hope mixed in to give you a sorta mix of Persona 3 dark and Persona 4 lightheartedness, and that’s a good thing. Quite possibly my favourite JRPG of this by a huge, wide and long road between the other stuff. Recommend whether you’re new or a veteran to this series, god damn play this game now! Honourable Mentions: In no particular order, here’s a few honourable titles that I loved but haven’t included in my main top ten. Tekken 7, Yakuza Kiwami, Battlechasers: Nightwar, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Evil Within 2, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn. 1) NieR: Automata -
This game...this game is why I love games, stories and music, all in one. A fantastic experience from start to finish, a rollercoaster of emotions whilst using gameplay in conjunction with narration and to break the fourth wall on multiple occasions. You play as 2B and 9S, androids that are fighting the Machine menace to save the earth for humanity, by destroying them to pieces and dodging and moving through bullet hell like segments and even Shmup segments too. Seems standard affair right? Well the story really _really_ slowly reveals itself, giving even development to the bosses and enemies you face, no major character here is one note, at all. Platinum Games managed to get one thing they could never quite master right; an engaging, dramatic and heartfelt story/narration. Execution is far from perfect, but this game is so near perfect it deserves to be played by everyone. The music? There’s a few refrains and already established tracks from the previous game, but why fix something if it ain’t broken right? The music is heartfelt and really emotionally heavy. Yoko Taro is truly the Madman of Video Games. But his mad genius is executed for the most part, really great. Pick this game up if you desire something memorable, meaningful and fantastic. So there’s my list, obviously this is my opinion, you may think differently, or think the same way, it’s fine, everyone’s got an opinion, but this is MY list, so don’t hate because a game I like that you don’t like is here, it’s kinda pathetic. Hopefully 2018 brings even more diamonds.

2017 is nearing it’s end. How was this year for gaming? It was fantastic. I started playing games “more properly” back in 2011 and I have to say that 2017 has been the best year of games that I’ve experienced.
I won’t talk about each game separately like I did last year, but I’ll mention them by name. Also I’m gonna talk about my personal GOTY. The year started out really strong with Resident Evil 7 in January. That game blew all of my expectations out of the water and gave me that sweet RE experience that I always wanted. The games quality might have dropped after you enter Lucas’ fun house, but the first half is pure gaming gold. I even went out of my way to get the platinum trophy. In February we got Nioh, another excellent game that I enjoyed. I got a bit tired of fighting all the Japanese historical figures, but I can’t deny that I loved going through the game, fighting yokai and amassing different weapons and armors. The combat in that game was phenomenal and made playing through it worth my time. I even remember being slightly addicted to the game, wanting to play it more and more each day.
And March? Hot damn. March saw the release of the Nintendo Switch and the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. One of the single best open world games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. I got so much game time out of BOTW and it never got old. I loved the world and the attention to detail. Even my older brother completed that game, and he’s the type of person that barely finished the games he buys. Surprisingly BOTW is not my GOTY. I do agree that it deserves the award for all the things it achieved, but there just happens to be another game that captured my heart.
The year then went on to have a lot more fantastic releases like Super Mario Odyssey, Nier automata, Crash Bandicoot N’sane Trilogy, South Park: Fracture But Whole, Metroid: Samus Returns etc... All great games in their own right. Special shout out to Nier, Metroid and the Crash remake, I enjoyed those very much. The year had some less stellar releases like Yooka Laylee and the Surge. These games aren’t bad in my opinion, just not amazing. I enjoyed my time with them, but I don’t really look back at them with fondness. Rather I look back at them and think: “Yeah they’re alright”.
I also played a couple indie games this year like Steamworld Dig 2, Cuphead, Guacamelee and Snake Pass. There’s also one other indie game that I played. Among massive games like Zelda, Mario, RE and everything else there’s a little indie game that captured my heart.
My GOTY is Hollow Knight. A hand drawn 2D Metroidvania with a very unique world and interesting lore. Great level design, loads of variety, fun exploration, amazing bosses, quality soundtrack etc... Hollow Knight was an experience. An amazing experience that I will not quickly forget, it instantly became one of my all time favorite games. The game just had everything I appreciate and it executes these things flawlessly. The game oozes with unique style and atmosphere, look at areas like City of Tears I LOVED going there each time. The game also has a vague story that requires some figuring out, much like the story in Dark Souls. And it’s just. It’s just great, alright? The game is already a metroidvania which is a genre I really like. I even went as far as to say that I like Hollow Knight better than any 2D Metroid game, and I still think that. Metroid is fantastic, but Hollow Knight has so many more things going for it.
So there you have it. Hollow Knight will still get more content in 2018 and I’m very much looking forward to that. 2017 was a phenomenal year for video games and I’m excited for the new year!

i really feel the need to rant about me:a and its reception so far
a huge, badly constructed mess under the cut
the amount of shit this game is getting right now is ridiculous and unnecessary. on twitter/facebook/tumblr any website really. criticism is fine and i think it's good to point out things like the social issues, and the awkward animations, especially considering how many companies tend to release their game broken and unfinished these days. hell even the ea access thing to play me:a is in my opinion not great, because it feels like theyre using us as their beta testers, plus it's giving some bad press for the game. because the game clearly does have its weak points and not all of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive (which in the black and white internet culture to some people it automatically means that the game must  be bad, even tho no full reviews are out yet). people have been worried about this game ever since it was announced, so the ea access trial was a very bad marketing move to build up hype (and to get people pay for ea access.... thanks ea). and i have no idea why bioware montreal is making their next game in their best selling franchise. that seems weird too but hey maybe the game turns out to be great and they made it because they had the potential.
but the thing is, everyone is overreacting super hard right now. it's almost like people want to hate the game. there seems to be this need to tear it apart. and while some of it definitely comes from the shit show that was the end of me3 and its reception, and the weird secretive marketing for this game, the main problems people are having with the game right now seem to be... the character creator and some of the animations. things that a) are fixable b) can be overlooked c) are ultimately not game breaking though the immersion might suffer. i would also like to make point about how there are like 1000 npcs or some shit in this game, so while thats not really an excuse, it is not a surprise that there are some awkward animation out there (da:i still has some 2 years after launch, though da:is animations problems were never this severe to begin with) and as people have pointed out, the majority of the animations are fine.   and honestly most games do have these kind of problems at launch. i really do hate the way people now compare all bioware games to witcher 3 and i wouldnt normally do the same, but witcher 3 also had major problems at launch. most games do.  like i said earlier, companies shouldnt release unfinished games but it happens.
and while im not familiar with how relationships with publishers and development studios like ea and bioware really work, i think that’s good to keep in mind too because, well, ea is ea.
and even all that said the game might not turn out to be the masterpiece people want/expect/hope for. it’s always disappointing. theres a lot to be said about companies and devs hyping up their games and simultaneously shooting themselves in the leg but that’s another topic. but i just. games can be ok. they can be alright. you can have fun with them and enjoy them even if theyre not genre defining or the next big classics or compete for the GOTY. a lot of people absolutely hate fallout 4. i think it was alright. i enjoyed the gameplay and was invested enough in the world, characters and story even tho i didnt give a dick about my dead husband and baby. it didnt bring anything new to the table, it was all sort of been-there-done-that, but i still had fun. it was alright.  you can have opinions, sure. you can love unpopular games, hate popular games and the other way around. ive always been very vocal about my hate towards david cage games and you know what? i already hate detroit become human. if it turns out to be good then great. im even willing to give it a chance, but for now i hate it. but what im trying to sya here is that given the hate me:a is getting right now, i just feel like you dont have to love OR hate games. and you CAN hate games for sure. absolutely. you can even do it before they come out. my beef is mostly with internet culture, hive mind, black and white thinking and the unfairness of all that noise. i also hate being in a fandom filled with so much negativity. it’s not fun. it makes me question why im even here. like are these people having fun?? what are they doing here?
im not saying you cant point out the animations or anything like that. it’s fun to make fun of games and their less polished sides/glitches/what have you . but i really do feel like a lot of people are crossing the line of fun and good taste, and just being mean spirited and unfair towards the game.
the hate me:a is getting right now is.... kinda worrying? the devs are getting harassed, it might affect the game’s sales, people are sharing the most extreme and negative first-impression articles about the game (cough, that rock paper shotgun article, cough) which might result in more news sites writing stuff like that for the clicks etc. even on tumblr a lot of the jokes aren’t really funny anymore, but almost malicious. the game’s not even out yet. no reviews are out yet. it’s good to be cautious about games and pre-order culture (i cant stress this enough), and bioware has definitely given us reason to worry about me:a. but... this?

Games of the Year 2019
GOOD
Wargroove
Yoshi's Crafted World
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit
Boxboy + Boxgirl
Puyo Puyo Champions
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Daemon X Machina
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Killer Queen Black
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pokemon: Sword & Shield
The games in this part of the list are in a weird kind of neutral zone—way too good to be left off the overall list, but not wholeheartedly recommended without at least one caveat. All are good, and most are probably worth your time, but each is missing a certain something to justifiably slot them into the upper echelons.
The one standout here is Link's Awakening—I couldn't justify moving it to the next tier up, as it's really just a straight remake of a decades-old Game Boy game—but good lord, what a remake it is. The original was my all-time favorite game until Breath of the Wild came out two years ago, and I played and beat this remake in less than a week. Seeing map areas and locales that I knew like the back of my hand remade in gorgeous tilt-shift HD was a real highlight this year.
RECOMMENDED
Tetris 99
Ape Out
Baba is You
Gato Roboto
Slay the Spire
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Wilmot's Warehouse
Untitled Goose Game
Sayonara Wild Hearts
These are all fantastic games that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. Tetris 99 came out of nowhere and sounded like a joke at first—Tetris but...battle royale?—but it just completely works, and the special events on various weekends this year always drew me back in.
None of the rest of the list was developed or published by Nintendo, but all appeared on the Switch—so much for the idea that Nintendo doesn't know how to work with third parties. Ape Out's core gameplay, visual aesthetic, and killer interactive soundtrack made for a great experience the first time, and an even better one on NG+. Baba is You took a very simple genre, made one slight tweak, and nourished that idea into 200+ levels of mind-bending puzzles. Wilmot's Warehouse used a similar push-block mechanic, but instead used it to create a game about organizing things—and for the right kind of weird person, of which I am one, this is an incredible game experience. Gato Roboto and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night each successfully riffed on the Metroidvania genre in different ways, but with similarly fantastic results (although to be fair, the latter needed a late patch to justify its inclusion on this list).
Slay the Spire was a hands-down favorite. Deck-building games are a genre I've wanted to get into but never quite have—until now. Spire checked the same boxes in my brain that last year's Into the Breach did—your enemies show their intentions ahead of time, giving you as much time as you need to plot your strategy; and yet, one slightly undercooked move later and it all falls apart. I've been coming back to this one all year and, as someone who regularly undercooks their own moves, will likely continue to do into next year.
Untitled Goose Game was arguably more popular as a meme than as a game, but the relatively simple gameplay was buoyed by some of the most genuinely hilarious interactions I've ever experienced in a game. My 8 year old is still hiding behind corners, waiting to spring an unexpected HONK on her poor old dad.
Another game that succeeded almost despite its gameplay was Sayonara Wild Hearts. It's hard to describe this game—it's almost a rhythm game, but not really; it has a story, but it's ambiguous and none of the characters are even named; there's not much gameplay, but I wouldn't want to watch it passively as a movie—needless to say it's unlike anything I've ever played before. I finished it in two sessions back to back, and was completely enthralled by the colors, environments, the aforementioned ambiguous narrative—but mostly it was the music. Because make no mistake, this game has a goddamned tremendous soundtrack, and it carries through the whole experience. Actually, maybe I do know what kind of game this is—a video game LP.
ESSENTIAL
Mario Maker 2
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition
A big update, released a few months after it came out, single-handedly moved Mario Maker 2 up a tier. The game was already great—proving that even though the Wii U gamepad was the impetus for Mario Maker’s creation, it was not required for it to be fun—but the addition of online multiplayer firmly established that this was a must-have for the platform. Yes, building courses is still great, playing a seemingly infinite amount of user-made courses is great, and yeah, Nintendo even included about 100 of their own courses in a single player "story" mode this time—but it all pales in comparison to competitive, multiplayer Mario. I've referred to the mechanics of 2D Mario as a language one might learn to speak, and it's one that I'm personally fluent in; but now, for the first time, it's a language that I can converse in online with my friends.
We devoted an entire podcast episode to Fire Emblem: Three Houses for a good reason—for the first time, at least in the US, this entry in the Fire Emblem series can comfortably stand toe-to-toe with any other major first-party Nintendo release. Having been largely relegated to handhelds in the past, this entry finally matches the scope, production value, and polish of any other "big budget" Nintendo game on the Switch. Combat remains mostly unchanged, which is fine, but there are two main things that set this entry apart compared to its past. First, the setting of the school, with your character as the teacher, sets up a monthly calendar-based schedule of training students and then taking them onto the battlefield. This loop is addictive and lends itself to the second major change—the cast, namely your students, are some of the most fully fleshed out (and therefore the most agonizing to protect from permadeath) characters the series has ever seen—and this is a series with a tremendous backlog of great characters. I cared about every student in my class and was deeply invested in getting the best out of each and every one of them. That there are four story paths amongst the titular three houses adds a ton of replay value, and when all was said and done this missed out on GOTY by a hair.
Vanilla Dragon Quest XI came out on PS4 last year, but true heads knew that this was the version to wait for. The story goes that Satoru Iwata, before the Switch was even named the Switch, personally reached out to Square Enix and made one final request before passing away—release this game on our new console. For me, Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) and Nintendo go hand in hand, and this "S: Definitive Edition" was well worth the wait. The story is typical Dragon Quest—all charm and polish, not a ton of surprise or deep substance—but this Switch edition added to the base story, introduced a new mode where you visit each of the ten locales from previous games in the series, updated the much-maligned music from the original to a new fully-orchestrated score, and imported the Japanese-only 3DS's "2D Mode." It's a lot of game in one package, and I'm still working my way through the back-half of the game, but every hour I continue to spend with this game is a treat. You won’t play a more charming game all year.
Any of these, in a different year, could have been my GOTY.
GOTY
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Alright let's get this out of the way first—technically this game came out in December of last year. It even made my "Essential" list last year. Here's what I said about it: "SSB Ultimate came on late but hit hard—I played it with friends every night for weeks after release. This one is gonna last well into next year and beyond."
Well that was an understatement. Well over 250 in-game hours later, no other game defined my 2019 like Super Smash Bros Ultimate. I continued playing this game online with friends nearly every night for roughly the first half of the year, and it's still not really out of the rotation. Part of that is due to just how much *game* is here—we mostly played it competitively, which is to say, no items, 1v1, etc. But there's also a robust single player mode, in-game events, balancing options that allow me to play it relatively competitively with my 8 year old, and of course we always have the option to turn everything on and go full-on party mode. Then throw in a new character roughly every other month (s/o to Hero and Terry, two of my favorites to play currently) plus a robust online community generating dialogue, gifs, and highlight videos on a nearly daily basis (s/o YEET Smash), and you have the recipe for a game that's going to hold my attention for the foreseeable future.
I could go on and on about the fan service, or about the impossibly good job Sakurai and co are doing balancing 80ish characters (plus item interactions), or about Nintendo finally starting to get serious about supporting a tournament community, but ultimately the decision to rank this one first comes down to this—2019 was a difficult year for me personally, but when I look back on it, the absolute fondest memories I have of playing games this year were playing Smash with my friends. It was true of Bloodborne in 2015, and it's true of Smash now.

my game of the year list!
i’m not at all qualified to talk educatedly on this subject but i figured i would do my own personal 2018 goty for fun! i have a list below of all the games i remember playing in 2018 and what i thought of them, including games that weren’t actually released this year but that i played for the first time, so don’t get mad when i start talking about supergiant. the second list are my personal top three games from best to not-best-but-still-damn-good, and i’ve gone ahead and removed botw from the running in that because that seems unfair lol. lastly, i have a list of games i want to play next year if i can. so here they are!
games i played this year:
fire emblem echoes: shadows of valentia: i’m big on fire emblem, especially fe13 (lucina was accessory to my bisexual awakening LMAO), and i gotta say this game was a really fresh change from the usual fire emblem formula (i know it’s a reboot but i can’t speak to the mechanics or story of the original since i haven’t played it). sov did a fantastic job making me care about alm and celica (their reunion cutscene ruined me) and honestly? i got used to not having a weapons triangle. i don’t think it’s better or worse than a game like fe13 where you basically get to play rock-paper-scissors if you want to, i just think it’s different. it made me care about different things during battles than just weapons, including dialogue-wise, since you can’t support a character with just anyone. i will say this however: the postgame is FUCKING HARD
fire emblem: the sacred stones: DON’T BE MAD I KNOW THIS IS A GBA GAME i just really wanted to talk about it since it’s so iconic as far as fire emblem goes. the gameplay itself i don’t have much to comment on—it sure is a fire emblem game, rock-paper-scissors and all! the characters though i just have to say are fucking hilarious. ephraim is frat boy gay. anyone watching eirika and seth interact is physically pained by how in love they are and how hard they’re ignoring it. innes is just a wreck, just a huge fucking mess. head over heels for vanessa and what does he do? continues to be the world’s biggest snob. I WANTED TO KILL LYON WITH EPHRAIM TO GET COOL DIALOGUE BUT I SENT LUTE IN TO DO PRELIMINARY DAMAGE AND SHE TOOK HIM OUT IN ONE HIT. INTSYS WHAT THE FUCK
transistor: sword boyfriend.....................................yes
pyre: this game stresses my computer out (i play on a laptop that was decidedly not meant for video games) but that doesn’t stop me from loving it!! pyre is beautiful, the characters are interesting, and the gameplay (despite being essentially just basketball+) is fun once you get ahold of it. my favorite part of the game is the language they created, it’s so lovely and i wish it were real so i could learn it. the main criticism i have is that it doesn’t do a great job blending story and gameplay: the two are completely separate and they take turns being at the forefront of the experience. as my friend once aptly said, “it feels like a first game.”
cave story: ok welcome to sasha’s unpopular opinion corner...cave story was fine? it was fine. sometimes it was a little frustrating, sometimes it was really fun, but overall i just felt kinda “well, ok” about it. i think it might just not be my style of game. that said i do love balrog. what a good friend.
a case of distrust: crime is my favorite type of genre fiction so this was right up my alley story-wise. i also like point-and-clicks because when they’re done well the mechanics blend right into the story, though honestly this one got a little old towards the end and just felt like reading. the ending was also sort of unfulfilling (but the obligatory mystery-novel twist was good). i know this sounds negative but overall i had a great time with this one.
the red strings club: hoooooo boy this game. i had no idea what i was getting myself into. it’s like isaac asimov meets capitalist mind control meets the aesthetic concerns of neon genesis evangelion meets lgbt people. it’s short, compelling, and really fucking creative. who thought of this shit?? and how can i shake their hand????? go buy the red strings club
florence (mobile): i know a lot of people loved it but i thought this game was pretty stupid. the only thing that made it worth the two dollars for me was the music—and i would’ve paid for that without a game to go with it, because i’m a music geek. it was pretty, sure, but i thought the content was trite. it didn’t really make me care, and because of that the “gameplay” felt empty.
the arcana (mobile): does this even count as a game? i’m going to say so for the purposes of this list because you occasionally make decisions lol. anyways the stories here are really clichéd and cater heavily to the player’s emotional/romantic desires but i think that’s exactly what we all came here for so does it matter?? i’m not up to date on nadia’s route because it bored me, julian’s route is alright (a little too clichéd imo although satisfying), but i love asra’s route and i LOVE HIM WITH HIS HAIR PUSHED BACK AT THE MASQUERADE OK
the legend of zelda: breath of the wild: what could i possibly say that hasn’t already been said about botw? i could say this: most underrated part of the game is the diversity and huge sensory gratification of movement/footfall noises and you may quote me on that.
the gardens between: i played this in one day and tbh paid too much for it but it was still fun. the game teaches you really well how the puzzles work and then builds on them, and a couple of the last levels actually require a very careful eye. i think my graphics were a little glitchy (some of the bridges didn’t show up completely and frendt’s sprite ascended as opposed to climbed ladders) but that didn’t affect the gameplay at all, and overall the sets were beautiful. the music is nice and ambient and the ending is quite sweet, though i won’t spoil it of course.
minit (some): i’ve found this game to be fundamentally enjoyable but the time limit stresses me out so i can only play in small bursts and thus have not made very much progress. it is cute though and a little eerie, so there’s a cool atmosphere.
my top three games i played this year (botw):
the red strings club
transistor
the gardens between
games to play in 2019 (rip my bank account):
grim fandango
bastion
return of the obra dinn
moonlighter
the new animal crossing!!
if you actually read all the way to the end of this you’re the coolest, thanks so much!! i’m glad you wanted to hear my opinion, and i hope you played as many fun games in 2018 as i did! happy new year everyone :)
