Lumity Analysis: Why They're Perfect
"Lumity" refers to the ship between Luz Noceda and Amity Blight from the Disney animated series "The Owl House." Disney has made strides in LGBTQ+ representation in recent years. Historically, the company has been criticized for a lack of diversity in its characters, but there have been notable developments toward inclusivity.
Their Introduction
In the first season of "The Owl House," Luz Noceda and Amity Blight are initially introduced as classmates at Hexside School of Magic and Demonics. Amity is a skilled and popular student, while Luz is an enthusiastic human girl who lacks magical abilities. Their relationship starts with Amity being dismissive and condescending towards Luz, especially due to Luz's unconventional approach to magic.
As the season progresses, particularly in episodes like "Understanding Willow" and "Enchanting Grom Fright," their dynamic begins to shift. Luz learns more about Amity's struggles and challenges, and Amity starts to see Luz in a different light. The development of their friendship and eventual romantic undertones forms a significant part of the first season.
Understanding Amity Blight
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amity Blight is portrayed as a prodigious young witch attending Hexside School of Magic and Demonics. Initially portrayed as a competitive and dismissive character, the show explores the reasons behind her behavior, delving into her struggles with family expectations and her own desire to fit in. Instead of sticking to a one-dimensional "mean girl" persona, Amity's relationships with other characters, especially with Luz and Willow, showcase a more nuanced personality.
She once had a close friendship with Willow Park, but due to peer pressure and her desire to fit into her family's expectations, Amity distances herself from Willow. This storyline is explored in the episode "Understanding Willow," shedding light on the complexities of Amity's character.
Family Life and Abuse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her parents, Odalia and Alador Blight, are portrayed as strict and demanding figures, particularly her mother, Odalia. The show hints at emotional abuse from her mother, adding layers to Amity's internal conflicts. Amity has older siblings, twins named Emira and Edric Blight. They play a significant role in the series, as they really love their little sister and occasionally offer advice to her. While they share the Blight family ambition, they also display a more carefree and rebellious attitude compared to Amity.
Being the more overtly abusive parent, Odalia sets unrealistic expectations for Amity by pressuring her to conform to the Blight family's high standards. This constant pressure to excel and meet these expectations contributes to Amity's initial behavior as an arrogant rival and her internal struggles. Odalia's emotional manipulation and criticism shape Amity's sense of self-worth and contribute to her insecurities. The fear of disappointing her mother and the desire for approval become driving forces in Amity's life, affecting her interactions with others, including her peers like Luz.
On the other hand, Alador's neglect also plays a role in Amity's development. His lack of active involvement in her life might leave Amity feeling overlooked and contribute to a sense of loneliness. The absence of positive attention from a parental figure could impact her emotional well-being and contribute to her seeking validation elsewhere, whether through academic achievements or conforming to societal expectations.
Early Behavior
At the beginning of "The Owl House," Amity was introduced as an arrogant rival and a bit of a bully. Driven by her desire to excel academically and meet her family's expectations, she initially sees Luz as a threat and behaves dismissively and competitively.
One example of this was when she almost got Luz dissected by Principal Bump, mistaking her for an abomination. This incident shows her willingness to use any means to maintain her status, even if it means putting Luz in danger. This showcases the extent of her dedication to conforming to her family's standards.
Similarly, in the episode "Covention," Amity's actions, like stepping on King's cupcake, illustrate her inclination to follow the expectations set by her peers and her mother. These instances lay the groundwork for her eventual realization and character development as she begins to question the values she once upheld and develops a more authentic sense of self.
Why Luz Is A Positive Influence?
Amity's transformation into a better and more compassionate person was strongly influenced by her friendship with Luz Noceda. When Luz entered Amity's life, she challenged the rigid expectations set by Amity's family and offered genuine friendship. Luz's positive influence on Amity stems from her acceptance and encouragement. Since Luz doesn't judge Amity based on her family background or talents, this acceptance allows Amity to gradually break free from the toxic influences of her parents. Through various adventures and shared experiences, Luz helps Amity rediscover her own values and passions.
As their friendship evolves into a romantic relationship, Amity learns the importance of authenticity and staying true to herself. Luz's influence empowers Amity to challenge societal norms and expectations, fostering a sense of independence and self-discovery.
Her Friendship With Willow
Tumblr media
"Understanding Willow" is a pivotal episode in "The Owl House" where Amity confronts the regrets and pain she caused Willow due to her past actions and toxic friendships. In this episode, viewers witness the depth of Amity's character as she reflects on her role in distancing herself from Willow and succumbing to the toxic influence of her friend group, particularly Boscha and Skara.
This episode also marked a turning point for Amity as she decided to make amends with Willow. This act of vulnerability and apology demonstrates her willingness to break free from the toxic patterns in her life, thanks to Luz. It sets the stage for Amity's broader character development, paving the way for her eventual growth into a more better person.
Luz Is Amity's First Crush
Tumblr media
Amity's revelation of her attraction to women, particularly her crush on Luz, in "Enchanting Grom Fright" can be relatable to many teenagers discovering their own sexuality.
Amity's realization and expression of her feelings for Luz capture the uncertainty and excitement that often accompany one's first crush. When Grom attacks her, and Amity's worst fear is seen as being romantically rejected by someone unspecified, shown by Grom tearing up a note, Amity was seen throughout the episode. Luz reassures her it's alright and offers to go to Grom with her instead, as that's what friends do.
Amity and Luz then team up and fight Grom by dancing together, where they are portrayed to be extremely close while doing so. After their dance, it is revealed to the audience that it was Luz who Amity had been planning to ask out to Grom but didn't out of her fear of rejection.
Certainly, the intensity of Amity's feelings for Luz has been a notable and recurring theme in both Season 1 and Season 2 of "The Owl House." The blushing moments between Amity and Luz serve as visual cues to emphasize the romantic undertones of their relationship.
How They Fell In Love?
At first, Amity sees Luz as a rival and is dismissive of her unconventional approach to magic. Amity's uptightness and desire to maintain her status as the top student clash with Luz's spontaneous and chaotic nature. Despite their differences, Luz's persistence and kindness slowly break down Amity's initial resistance.
As Amity and Luz spend more time together, they begin to form a genuine connection. Amity starts to appreciate Luz's unique perspective and adventurous spirit, which contrasts with her own practical and regimented approach to magic. Throughout their adventures, these experiences deepen their bond and allow Amity to see Luz in a new light. As their friendship evolved, Amity began to realize her feelings for Luz. Despite her initial resistance and the societal expectations placed upon her, Amity embraces her love for Luz, recognizing that their differences complement each other. Ultimately, it's Luz's uniqueness, kindness, and unwavering support that lead Amity to fall in love with her.
Will They, Won't They?
The show subverted the common "Will They, Won't They" trope by providing a more nuanced and progressive approach to the development of romantic relationships, particularly the central one between Luz and Amity. Rather than drawing out the tension over multiple seasons, the show addresses Amity's feelings for Luz relatively early in the series. This allows for a more extended exploration of their relationship beyond the initial stage of uncertainty.
The show also doesn't rely heavily on misunderstandings or miscommunication between Luz and Amity to create drama. Instead, it focuses on their genuine connection, allowing the relationship to progress organically. This subverts the common trope of prolonged miscommunication, leading to unnecessary tension.
While the romantic aspect is crucial, the foundation of Luz and Amity's relationship is built on a strong and supportive friendship.
Becoming An Official Couple
Tumblr media
In the episode "Knock, Knock, Knockin' On Hooty's Door ", the Tunnel of Love scene shows the depth of their characters and the relatable challenges they face in expressing their feelings.
Luz's Perspective: Luz's awkwardness and reluctance in the Tunnel of Love stem from her past experiences of being mocked for her unconventional behavior. This fear of rejection has likely been exacerbated by instances where her crushes didn't reciprocate her feelings, making her cautious and hesitant in expressing herself romantically.
Luz's attempt to stop the ride and dismantle the romantic setting reflects her desire to show Amity a grand and unique romantic gesture. She may feel that Amity deserves something more extraordinary than what the Tunnel of Love provides, inadvertently overlooking the fact that Amity finds the gesture charming.
Amity's Perspective: On the other hand, Amity was seeking confirmation that Luz reciprocates her feelings. The romantic setting of the Tunnel of Love, despite its cheesiness, is a sign to Amity that Luz might share her romantic interest. Amity's genuine flattery and blushing indicate that she appreciates the gesture, but Luz's reaction misleads her. Amity's fear of rejection, rooted in past experiences such as Grom taking Luz's form and tearing her note, resurfaces. Luz's destructive response triggers Amity's trauma, as she believes Luz is rejecting her. The heartbroken expression mirrors the pain of potential rejection.
The episode hints at Luz's past experiences of bullying on Earth, likely due to her neurodivergence and inability to conform to societal norms. Amity's socially inept behavior is a result of her strict upbringing, making both characters relatable to those who have faced similar challenges.
Their First Kiss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first kiss between Luz and Amity in "Clouds on the Horizon" is a heartfelt moment in their relationship. Amity's vulnerability, coupled with Luz's genuine concern, sets the stage for a deepening emotional connection when Luz used vines to climb to Amity's room and the privacy provided by Amity's siblings leaving emphasize the intimacy of the moment.
Amity's uncertainty about Luz's safety adds a layer of tension that is beautifully resolved when they run to each other with joy upon realizing they are both safe. Luz's promise to take Amity on a real date showcases her commitment and care for Amity beyond the immediate circumstances. The unexpected kiss between Amity and Luz is a culmination of their growing feelings for each other. The blushing aftermath reflects the natural and tender awkwardness of two characters navigating new romantic territory.
Amity's decision to defend Luz against Odalia's dismissal is a powerful declaration of their relationship, marking a turning point in Amity's willingness to stand up for her feelings and challenge familial expectations.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
Finally, in the series finale, "Watching and Dreaming," Luz and Amity's love for each other shines through as they confront their greatest challenges yet. From supporting each other in the dream realm to sharing a heartfelt reunion after the final battle, their bond remains unbreakable. The tender moments they share, including a kiss on the cheek and their affectionate embrace, affirm the depth of their feelings and the enduring nature of their relationship.
From their initial interactions marked by misunderstandings to the development of a deep and supportive connection, Lumity stands out for its positive representation.

Could you please explain the difference between the goal and the objective to me? English is not my first language, and when i opened translator, i found out these two things mean the same in my native language, so i don't understand it well enough. Thanks in advance
This EXTREMELY reasonable, especially since when I first read it I had to pause and think about it for a second, and I kind of wish I'd thought ahead about it because I don't blame you at all for this. For those missing context, I posted this quote last night saying that I could expand on it but that it was a perfect phrasing of how Luz and Amity see their relationship, or bare minimum how they treat it.
Tumblr media
So the simplest way I can explain it is that: A goal is the final destination. The end point of a plan or desire. An objective needs to be achievable and needs to be clarified as 'final' if it's the last one. It is the steps in which you take to reach a goal.
For Amity, improving herself, becoming better, etc. like that are all objectives to serve the goal of being an awesome girlfriend because her goal, as far as the two are concerned (and kind of in life in general but that's at the point where this gets depressing), is to be an awesome girlfriend and never stop being one. It's not a goal that she can ever cross off though because being an awesome girlfriend means continuing to put in the work towards the other person.
Luz meanwhile treats "Get a girlfriend" as an objective for her larger goal of "Live out my ultimate witch fantasy." Remember the fervor she had about befriending Amity no matter what? And then how she blatantly ignores her being in danger or in pain once they're together? That's because once they're together, she considers the work to be done. It's like she completed a sidequest for the emote "Spin girlfriend" and now she has more important things to do than talk to an NPC with no treats left for her.
If you think this is overkill... It's what happened to Willow and Gus. She befriended Gus and Willow and then literally never sought them out again once they unlocked Hexide for her unless it was for key items required to progress the Amity quest chain like the library card. Gus and Willow always had to come and see her. And how does it go with Amity once they're together? Amity keeps coming to Luz minus Clouds on the Horizon where Luz has to get talked INTO going and seeing her girlfriend.
This disparity (let alone what it did to Amity's character) is what makes canon Lumity so sad to me. No, neither of them should only care about their girlfriend but one frankly cares too much where as it becomes her only real worry while the other doesn't care at all. It's just an ugly situation and yes, very real to being a teenager but I also think entirely unintentional seeing as they are still together to go to college.
It also makes me wonder if Luz living in the human realm for three years is the only reason they're still together. No human girl can compete with Amity because they don't have magic and she isn't spending enough time with Amity to get bored. They're effectively in an endless honeymoon period where Luz can do whatever she wants and be rewarded with the fun parts of a relationship.
When she has to find out she has to grind to get her next reward though... Is she just going to find a game with faster to achieve objectives? Just find a new project to work on? Or will Amity finally stop caring about the lying because it hurts her ability to be an awesome girlfriend and instead just realize that being lied to constantly sucks?
Or would those two collide into something truly sad because Luz won't admit she's playing a new game?
*sigh* I'm now just thinking about a quote I once heard. "The worst thing that can happen to your ship isn't that it doesn't become canon. It's that it becomes canon and then is done poorly." And blogs like these make me wonder why I've put over half a million words into these two.
Because they sure did become canon and sure were done poorly.

What do you think hunter and amity dynamic might look like? Are they always going to hate each other or do they have a chance to become friends
see, here's the thing; i don't think they hate each other.
i feel like that is.... a very common interpretation of their dynamic; where they both hate each other and amity still doesn't trust hunter and says only bad things about him and absolutely despises him, etc. etc. meanwhile in reality it's...... really nothing like that.
like, i love the idea of them having a playfully-mean/bickery kinda friendship, where they constantly tease each other about stuff and embarass each other and take playful jabs at each other. it's SO funny, it's so entertaining to think about. but at the end of the day amity... isn't actually Mean, like she's trying rly hard not to be, that's the whole point of her character development from s1 to s2; she herself says that she wants to be nicer to people like luz is. she definitely isn't cruel or hateful, or anything of the sort, like some amity and hunter content seems to make her out to be, so???
like, sure, they're definitely not FRIENDS-friends at the moment, they only really interacted in eclipse lake and then only as part of the group, so they don't really... have an established friendship dynamic.
like, for example, when it comes to willow and gus, hunter spent lots of time with them, serious situations as well as some fun/downtime moments included. they played flyer derby, they connected over personal stuff, they fought together, they spent at least a whole week bonding as friends and getting to know each other; they're close. hunter sees them as his friends and he still hasn't shared the truth about himself with them because he's that worried that they reject him for it and he loses them. he went his entire life having no people who'd genuinely care about him; he knows what that's like, and now that he sees how good it feels to have friends, he desperately doesn't wanna go back to the point when he was all alone. he cares abt his friendship with gus and willow, a lot.
and then, when it comes to hunter and luz, they didn't get to actually do anything fun and chill as of yet, all the situations they were in were, in one way or another, somehow related to survival or missions or fighting or running for their lives, but they're also very much visibly friends. it's hard to describe their relationship in short cuz it's FULLLLL of little nuances and the way it progresses is also so, so good; the way it seems like luz is the only one looking for friendship while hunter is only annoyed by it, even though deep down he still hopes to make a connection, even though he wants friends. the way he immediately drops calling luz "human" and starts calling her by her name right as he finds out the truth about belos. how they trust each other with their secrets, how luz offers hunter to stay at the owl house, how she never treats him as the enemy even when he's on belos' side because she knows it's more complicated than that, how they both went through a deeply traumatic event together and they're the only two people who actually understand what it was like. so hunter and luz's friendship still lacks those...... light-hearted "we're hanging out and having fun" moments but they very much are, also, friends.
now, as for amity and hunter, there's....... eclipse lake. they have a lot in common and they bonded while talking about their experiences as well, and amity offered hunter her hand (and really hoped he'd take it), but their interaction ended in a fight and, even though hunter was genuinely thankful that she gave him the key and he expressed it, they just...... didn't have the chance to get the closure about what happened. so while they're in the same friendgroup and, thus, friends by association, there's still something lacking before they can call themselves friends. (actually, just in general, i'd say amity is, out of the entire hexsquad, the most "disconnected'' person from the rest of the group... surprisingly. i feel like her dynamics with others could be more explored and it'd be beneficial if she got to bond with everyone separately as well, but that's a whole 'nother topic so.... moving along)
i feel like there would be some awkwardness/tension between her and hunter if they were to be left alone, since they hadn't had a real one-on-one talk since the whole eclipse lake situation, but once they got over it and maybe had some occassion to bond with each other more, maybe even find some mutual interests, they could definitely become friends.
and when it comes to all the "amity hates hunter and is suspicious of him and will never forgive him" stuff; even before, amity would trust luz's (and willow's and gus') judgement. i doubt she'd think he was still about to betray them or would be actively hostile towards him, especially not NOW, after everything that's happened. she sees what he went through, she knows his situation (not fully but frankly she still knows enough for it to matter and be worrying), she knows he's with them now. she's not distrustful of him, she doesn't think he's gonna stab everyone in the back.
i feel like post-eclipse-lake/pre-hollow-mind there might've been some bitterness left, from the fact that she gave him a chance but he didn't take it, and the whole fight, and what he said about luz, and just that whole.. situation; but even then, never like……. actual hate. amity saw (at least to a degree) what kinda situation hunter was in and could relate, saw how desperate he was and that he was troubled, and even when he WAS on belos' side, neither luz nor amity treated him as an "evil villain"; they were still sympathetic. i think, for example, in labyrinth runners she might've been a little suspicious of his true intentions at first, because she had only known him as the golden guard who'd do anything to come out victorious after all, but since willow and gus vouched for him and she saw that he wanted to help, she definitely didn't actually.. continue be distrustful of him. if anything, we saw alador accuse hunter of "being eager to return to belos" but nothing of the sort from amity.
so like, i feel like there might be some kinda unresolved thing between them and they definitely need to talk, and i DO love the idea of them having a very teasy/bickery dynamic, but there aren't any like…… held grudges or hostility or anything of the sort between them. just some awkwardness and unfinished matters. not friends yet but... possibly, in the future.

Ok so I have a in progress owl house AU with the bat family. Now they don't really easily paste into the existing roles so there has to be a bit of editing and small changes. Here is the current role swap list.
Luz: Duke Thomas
Amity: Tim Drake (THIS IS A PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP!!!!)
Gus: Cass?? Maybe?? May give her a more dramatic backstory that Gus and that she left the "Emperors Coven" a while ago???? And she'd be older making Steph the younger one of the 2.
Willow: Steph??? Bc of the relationship between Willow and Amity?? Not quite accurate to Tim and Steph but drama?? Maybe?? Post breakup??
King: IDK YET LMAO
Hooty: Alfred...? Posh hooty....
Hunter: Damian
Golden Guard: Jason Todd
Ok so that needs some explaining, I kinda had to split that character into two because Jason could "die" and then come back as the crimson guard, but Damian fulfills the role of having been related to the Emperor. It'll be weird but kinda work?? I think??
I'm also not sure if I'll make Damian a grimwalker. I may be able to make him one that Talia may have raised?? In replacement of her old child she had with Bruce before they split??
ALSO DUE TO THEIR NATURE THERE WILL BE NO HUNTER WILLOW CROSSOVER HERE EITHER SORRY
Raine: Talia?? This could be so cool actually (Talia fits better in this role but It would be fun to have superbat. Unlikely though)
Eda: Bruce Wayne
Lilith: Kate Kane
Ed: Dick Grayson
Em: Barbara Gordon
The Emperor: Ras Al Ghul (dont know his situation! Talia may be a half elf in this)
They aren't aren't related but I feel like they got the vibes. Also idk if Dickbabs will be a thing here. I think it may have been a childhood relationship but they're almost outta school and Dicks with Kory.
if anyone has suggestions for who King may be lmk or how some changes in this could work??
Robin is a palisman that transfers around, Dick Grayson had it first, it being a palisman of one of his parents before they passed. When Jason started to hang around him and Bruce at the bathouse it eventually transfered over to him, and then transferred to Tim afterwards.
Dick Grayson did get a new palisman eventually though!! And it's reminiscent of Nightwing.
Jason does die and gets brought over to the Emperor and becomes the Crimson Knight and is stationed with Damian a lot. So missions Damian goes on, he is there as back up (As per request of Talia). He's a lot like the Young Justice Redhood at this point and my design is also reminiscent of that.
Tim's got the mid parents, may lean into the way Amity's parents are. He also doesn't have older siblings there to help out until Duke shows up and convinces him to go stay at bathouse permanently or something. (Dick and Babs do have a friendship with him though at school and try to get him to go to Dicks house more often but he doesn't)
Haven't thought about Stephs situation enough so if anyone has any ideas!!
As for covens, (I haven't thought about them enough RIP, will be added to as I get my act together)
Dick: Illusionist (Bruce doesn't have as bad of a relationship with the school as Eda did, though it did get worse after Dick started going!!"
My thought process was Illusionist is a very performative coven and he is a performer at heart <3
Jason: Bard Coven
I wanted to draw him with a guitar. Sue me. (It was a tiktok lmao I can't remember if I had any real reasoning)
Kory: Construction Coven
Because I could see her wanting to make things and she's strong
Duke Thomas: light glyphs so many light glyphs
He's gonna go through the Luz route and found the Bad Bat Coven (tm)
Bruce: Head of Bad Bat Coven
If anyone has any ideas for what covens other people will be I'd like to know 🥺.

There's a lot of reasons that Amity and Darius interacting would be fun- they're both powerful abomination witches w/ complex relationships to Alador and Odalia, and it'd be interesting to see Amity progress her skills and to finally learn the drama that unfolded between Darius and the Blights back in the day.
But- and this is going into HC territory but I also think it's a valid read on their characters- Darius is also repeatedly shown to be someone who values individuality and freedom, seen mostly in his relationship with Hunter in any sport in a storm. And, personally, I HC that this trait influences his style of abomination magic! Uniquely, he makes himself the weapon by turning into goo instead of just making mindless drones that carry out the work for him, like most other abomination witches we see (especially Alador, who mass produces and optimizes these drones w/ tech). And when he does create more traditional abominations (like the messanger in ttbk) it's still clearly personalized after him. Nothing he makes is interchangeable with any other abomination, and he barely makes anything at all. Darius is practical but he also cares greatly about the people in his life and clearly values other people's personhood...which I think would make him a GREAT influence on Amity!
Until season 2 (and specifically escaping expulsion and reaching out) she'd had her own self expression and desires quashed in the name "reputation" and social standing by her parents. She has to look a certain way, act a certain way, talk to certain witches, and do certain things (be top student, join the EC, etc). After she meets Luz and the hexsquad, she started rebelling and pursuing things she actually wanted (re-befriending willow, ditching boscha and co, dating Luz and joining the brawl, etc) and I personally also think this is reflected in the development of her magic! she goes from creating pretty standard abominations in season 1 (that only ever progressed in terms of size and power, going from small ones in episode 3 to a fairly large one in episode 16) to focusing more on creating tools and constructs that assist her in battle (you can see this a lot in the eclipse lake fight- her goo acts as a shield, a rope, a bubble, a gauntlet, a knife, etc).
I think that not only would she be eager to impress Darius and learn more abt him (specifically his relationship with her parents), I think Darius would be secretly very happy to see Amity come into her own as her own person with her own way of doing things, despite everything she was taught- and heck, that might even be the first step towards Darius reaching out to Alador again. Darius may not like the man, but his kid turned out okay despite all the odds, and it's starting to make him wonder how things have changed since they were kids.
Obviously with the shortened run time, if we do get interaction between Amity and Darius, it'll likely only be for a single scene, and I wouldn't say it's something that's essential to the fabric of the story, the themes or the plot- you can wrap up the story w/o this kind of moment. BUT it's a very fun idea for me to rotate around in my mind 💜

How do you think Amity’s arc will carry on? Dana said Season 3 would see characters reach their potential, but Amity’s arc with defying authority (aka Odalia) and rebuilding friendship with Willow seem to end in Season 2, and I saw someone saying that S3 Amity does not have her own personality other than being Luz’s girlfriend. I personally don’t agree with this kind of view but I am worried that the show won’t further develop her character out of her romantic relationship in the rest of S3.
People say that practically every time Amity shows up in the show. It's not a new criticism of hers (although it's always entirely incorrect). She may be The Love Interest, but she’s also her own character, too, and the writing reflects that.
I think, yes, one-hundred percent, she's going to get more focus in one of the other episodes. Thanks to Them was largely about Luz and Hunter, and their guilt concerning the two main villains, and to a lesser extent, the episode was also about understanding Camila. Those were the biggest priorities, so there wasn't really time for anyone else to have any big moral quandaries, y'know? Amity's job, and Gu's and Willow's and Vee's, was to largely be supportive, because that's what they needed to be, both plot-wise and character-wise.
As for how Amity's arc will continue, well, I have a few thoughts about that, too. I think that her character arc overall is less about defying authority and more about learning to be herself, those two things just happen to come hand-in-hand more often than not.
She was never allowed to be herself during her childhood; she wasn’t even allowed to be her own person, instead just an extension of Odalia. Amity’s arc involves standing up against authority like her parents, yes, but it also involves her dressing up as Hecate for Halloween - which is exactly what she does in Thanks to Them. In that episode, there’s never any pretenses with Amity. She’s unapologetically and equivocally herself, which includes dorky references and silent support and lots of falling on her face, because that’s who she is as a person.
There’s plenty of things for her that could still happen in the show. Amity and Willow will never be done making up for lost time. She has to find Alador and they’re going to have to have a long talk about how to move forward together. She’s also the only person in the Hexsquad who’s missing people other than her parents, so I’m sure Edric and Emira will also have an emotional scene with her at some point. I’d also love to see more of her flexibility with magic--she has a very unique style out of everyone, especially out of her own Track, and I think that there’s a lot that she could do in branching out her Abomination magic in the upcoming episodes.
Also--even if a lot of her arc in s3 is intertwined with Luz’s, that doesn’t mean she’s a weaker character for it. Amity’s early progression was deeply influenced by Luz, because Luz was everything she ever wanted to be. Now it’s Luz’s turn to pull into herself, and Amity’s the one who has to have the courage to step up, to say, I’ve got you, and to be supportive and steadfast because Luz needs that. That’s not because Amity has no character outside of Luz, it’s because she’s her partner, and that’s her job.
A scene that I think could be very good in the next episode is, ironically, an argument between the two, though nothing is said of malice. I want Amity to get it through Luz’s head that everyone is better off from knowing her, especially Amity, to explain, maybe, where she’d be without Luz, how she would’ve lived her life. If done right, it could be a very powerful scene.

Farewell to The Owl House: a personal essay (warning: this a long post)
When Steven Universe ended in 2020, I didn’t think I would ever find another animated show that I would grow to love dearly.
And then I found The Owl House a couple of months later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started seeing gifs (like this one) and posts about this cartoon on my dashboard, similarly to how I discovered Steven Universe. Eventually, I decided to check it out on Disney Now. I watched the first episode and immediately liked it. So I watched the next episode and the next til I caught up a week before the episode that rocked the world (or at least the fandom’s world).
Enchanting Grom Fright.
Tumblr media
I have seen a few epic moments/episodes in children’s animated shows like Steven Universe and She-Ra. But there was just something about the lumity dance scene and the episode as a whole that just warmed my heart. And when Dana Terrace confirmed that Luz is bi (and later that Amity’s a lesbian), I was over the freaking moon.
Tumblr media
Growing up, I never saw much if any (good) representation of bisexual characters in the media. I just assumed people were either gay or straight. I recognized my attraction to boys when I was a kid and immediately assumed I was straight, ignoring any signs that I liked girls too because I liked guys, so I can’t be gay, right?
Right?
It wasn’t until college and meeting one of my roommates who was bi and being introduced to her queer group of friends that I began to realize “yes, people can like men and women, or any genders for that matter.” And I finally allowed myself to ask the question: “do I like women too?” The answer was yes and I began identifying as bisexual (or queer when people act like they can’t understand bisexuality *eye roll*).
So finally seeing a show with a bi protagonist whose also a girl of color and neurodivergent just made me felt seen all these many years later. To know that kids and teens (and yes, adults too) can see a character like themselves or realized that bi people actually exist and are actually you know...people who deserves love and respect.
Luz is one of my favorite characters in the series, and I relate to her a good amount. But I relate to a few other characters too, particularly Amity.
I talked about this in another post I made last year (or was it 2021?) but going to talk about it on here too.
Lost in Language is one of my favorite season 1A episodes, for many different reasons. But mainly because of the progression of Luz and Amity’s relationship (from Amity wanting nothing to do with Luz to admitting she was harsh with her and them hitting the reset button).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have been an Amity in the past. Not the mean/bitchy attitude Amity back then, coming from a rich or esteemed family. But I was the top student of my class too.
I had to be.
Not because of my parents like in Amity’s case. But because I had no other social standing in middle and high school. Students knew my name because of my high grades, my awards and eventually graduating as salutatorian. Yes, I’m still a tiny bit disappointed about the salutatorian thing. It was a battle between me and another girl throughout our 4 years in school, but she ended up becoming valedictorian.
In middle school, I had a Luz at my school. She kept trying to be my friend, but I wanted nothing to do with her. It always felt like whenever I was around her, something bad would happen. Especially this one incident. I was at my locker, ready to go home when she came by. She was twirling her baton, and it smacked me on my head. I got pissed and told her off. She profusely apologized, but I was too mad to accept her apology, and I left.
Looking back, I know I was too harsh with her. It was just an accident. She didn’t mean for the baton to hit my head. But at the time, I didn’t want her around. So unlike Luz and Amity, we never became friends.
I have slowly but surely grown to not care about being the best student, the best employee, the best child, the best this and that. I am an awesome person because of the person I have grown into, making changes and opening my mind and falling in and out of like/love with my friends (and more than friends). And no one can dictate the path I choose for myself.
I typed all of this to simply say: I love The Owl House.
I sometimes hate admitting it because Steven Universe still means a lot to me, but The Owl House has become my ultimate favorite cartoon of the newer generation (I’m a 90s baby and 90s/early 2000s cartoons still have my heart).
Besides relating to the characters and enjoying both the lighthearted and heartbreaking moments, this show has awakened the creativity in me.
I am a writer...or at least I love writing. But I haven’t done or shared that many projects of mine online. But in 2021, I gave drawing another chance, specifically redrawing screenshots. I liked my work and had the bravery to share my artwork on here, which I still do. I have to admit that my drawing skills have improved throughout the years. I still don’t feel ready to make art inspired by my own ideas. If I did, I would make and post a hundred black racebent Amity/canon Luz fanart.
And this year, I posted my very first fanfic. I have written fanfics before, but never ever shared them with anybody, especially not for the whole world to read. But again, this show inspired me so much that I just had to start sharing it.
Plus, my creative projects has helped me make some of the best friends I have ever made on here. And I love having their support and supporting them when they share their projects.
I’m not ready to see this amazing show come to end tonight. But I don’t think I will ever truly be ready to say goodbye. I’m going to miss this show. All the laughs, all the cries, all the shipping moments.
Thank you to the creator, the cast, the crew, and everybody who helped make this cartoon come into existence.
Us weirdos will always stick together.

Hunter and the Hexside Gang, an analysis on reflections and connections
So now that Labyrinth Runners aired I can finally make this post, cue spoiler warning!
Since Hunter has officially met and genuinely interacted with all four of the hexside gang, I can officially take a deep dive into the different facet of Hunter each character connects with and consequently brings the best out of. I'll go in order of when they first meet.
Luz in Hunting Palismen:
Hunting Palismen is the episode where Luz and Hunter first meet face to face, and I mean that literally. She's met the Golden Guard before but not Hunter. This is the first episode where that mask falls off, where that confident and full of himself facade is broken. It's the first episode where we see just a vulnerable kid desperate to do his job.
Here is also where we are introduced to an important facet of Hunter's character, his love and interest in wild magic.
Tumblr media
It's something both he and Luz bond and connect over. Luz's love and use of wild magic serves as a reflection for Hunter's own desire to learn and use wild magic. Her ability to freely learn it is everything Hunter desperately wishes to have, yet, is forbidden from him by Belos. And thus a connection is formed between the two, Luz representing the freedom to pursue one's own passion, a hopeful reflection of what he might be able to have or even do.
Amity in Eclipse Lake:
Eclipse lake was a pretty intense episode regarding lore and also character building. Here, more is revealed about Hunter's self worth, or lack there of. His self worth is based on how useful he is to Belos, much of his mental health in conjunction to the fear of being replaced. And Amity used to be not so different in how she valued herself either.
Tumblr media
Amity and Hunter both connect over viewing everything as an "opportunity to justify existing", in Amity's own words. We can see that the way she used to value herself is reflected in Hunter as well, to a higher degree but still reflected nonetheless. But it's also shown that Amity is working on undoing that mindset. Progress is slow but it shows Hunter that it's possible for him too. He just needs that push to finally work through it.
Willow in Any Sport in a Storm
That good 'ol half-a-witch nickname. Not so good actually but it's a direct connection and reflection between Willow and Hunter's insecurities regarding their magical standings.
Tumblr media
It's interesting to see both of them regard themselves as half-a-witch because of their inability to properly use magic (in willow's case, unable to do magic in her former assigned track). To Hunter, Willow is an immediate reflection of his own insecurities regarding magic. But to see her flourish in plant magic amazes him. Hunter literally respects Willow so much that he still calls her captain and honestly that's the most adorable thing I have ever seen- okay I'll stop.
Anyways, moving onto the final character of the hexside gang, the man, the myth, the master illusionist, Gus in Labyrinth Runners!
Gus and Hunter actually have a lot more in common. Both are gifted kids very much on their way to burnout with lots of ✨trust issues✨ but I digress. But a lot of what we saw happen to Gus we can assume happened to Hunter as well due to how they are viewed as prodigies to the people around them.
Tumblr media
They both get used because of their talent and intelligence in the way they perform magic and in doing so are unable to properly form genuine relationships with other people. That gnawing feeling that the person you just met is only talking to you because they need something from you is terrible and something Hunter can likely understand. To him, Gus could be a reflection of his younger, more naive self who perhaps trusted a bit too much only to be used by others and thrown aside.
Gus's own trust issues were hinted in Any Sport in a Storm when he first talked to Hunter. He was far more warier of him that others due to his own experiences of dealing with those with ulterior motives. By questioning Hunter, he's not only looking out for Willow but also giving himself some peace of mind by being skeptical of the new guy. Something along the lines of, "At least this time I didn't blindly trust anyone, at least this time I was cautious."
The fate of being a genius teen prodigy dooms you to a spotlight and many many expectations. You are always required to be the best and do your best. Climbing higher and higher peaks only to be met with another even higher one to climb too, both Gus and Hunter are fated to expectations. Both have been used and thrown aside.
Concluding thoughts!
It's interesting to see how Hunter connects with different aspects of the Hexside gang, Luz's love to wild magic, Amity's self worth, Willow's view of her powers, and Gus's trust issues and gifted kid syndrome. They are all truly reflections of each other and also a window into how Hunter can overcome the barriers he faces within these parts of himself. He's beginning to delve into wild magic and open up a bit more. It'll take time but he's on his way there.

Note
I’m not trying to be rude(trust me, I agree with a lot of your opinions on the show) but like..Millie is allowed to be one note and reoccurring. For example, Amity Blight from The Owl House is a very one note character whom has her main traits be “Luz” and “perfection”. She’s very bland but it’s not a criticism, characters are made to fill the roles they play and both Amity and Millie just fit the romantic partner with some extra traits(although, admittedly Millie could fit the “good wife” role better.)
I see what you mean, however Amity is different from Millie. Amity was introduced to be this one note character from the start because her purpose was to change eventually thanks to Luz, as well as set up their future romantic relationship. She was the mean girl that needed to be put in her place, because she was driven so hard to be the one to succeed (foreshadowing her future backstory with her parents on how she was pressured to be perfect). Honestly to sum this up, Amity was clearly introduced as one note because the writers clearly did that on purpose so they can build up her character for the story. Helluva Boss and The Owl House are….completely different shows in many ways. More importantly the Owl House is story driven, so that’s why Amity needed to be one note so they can progress her later. Helluva Boss on the other hand kinda has no excuse. The show introduced itself as a comedy about demon assassins, a show kinda like The Office where these characters just bounce off of one another. Of course until they wanted to make the show story driven and character driven at the same time, becoming a deep show as well. Millie is introduced as Moxxie’s wife, a badass girl yet having a sweet side, and…..that’s it. The show had time to develop characters like Moxxie, Blitz, and Stolas, but Millie is one of the 4 main characters and yet she has zero development. Part of the problem is that this show…let’s be honest, is now mainly centered around Stolitz, when Stolas at the start wasn’t even supposed to be a main character. Millie is literally part of this main cast, and yet she’s just the badass happy wife and that’s it. And the thing is…once again they HAD the chance to layer her, they could have done so in episode 5 because they literally set up how they’re going to her home town and meeting her parents, yet the writers don’t do that. They could have also layered her in episode 6, as they had set up how she has a prejudice against Hellhounds, and since Loona is SUPPOSED to be another main character, they could have bounced off of one another and worked together to save Blitz and Moxxie….yet they didn’t do that either. When I say I want Millie to have development, I’m not begging for like…something big to happen to her, just give us SOMETHING, show us her other sides, more interests, hobbies outside of Moxxie. She just feels like a character on the back burner right now, someone stuffed to the corner like Loona, while Viv keeps on writing Moxxie, Blitz, and Stolas.

Are you at all concerned about how they'll handle Hunter in the last two episodes? It's been really concerning to me how he's been sidelined in the past two episodes, by the draining spell and possession. He hasn't gotten to really do anything significant in TTT, as he was excluded from the Blood hunt& failed to warn them of Belos, and now he's lost Flapjack, so he'll struggle even more in combat. I'm slightly concerned, plus they're setting up ANOTHER Belos V Luz., which we don't need again.
Um. No. I'm not concerned about Hunter in the slightest. I think it's an agree to disagree situation but I can't wrap my brain around any of this.
I don't think Hunter was sidelined in King's Tide at all. He did plenty. He had just as much of a role as Amity, Willow and Gus did. And if you're referring to the fact that he was incapacitated by the Draining Spell, that didn't really sideline him either? He fought and he fought until the last few minutes when he physically couldn't anymore. If you're referring to the fact that it was Luz that handled most of the Belos confrontation rather than him, then....no. Hunter, at this point in his arc, was not ready to confront Belos. He was not ready to fight Belos. He was still utterly terrified of Belos. That's the reason he didn't do anything "significant."
And like. Man idk where to start with the whole Thanks to Them part. He was the deuteragonist of that episode. To say he was sidelined because he didn't participate in the blood hunt is like....he had a whole subplot all to himself about finding his own identity, while Luz's four other friends had to share one between them.
I think what I'm not getting here is what you'd define as "significant." Because I feel like he's done a ton. Not everything about Hunter's arc is rooted in progressing the plot or having badass moments. A lot of it is character based. And if you don't consider Hunter's huge moment of standing up to Belos near the end to be significant then...man idk what to tell you.
Also I feel like this is a little dismissive of the Luz and Belos relationship, which is pretty important too. Obviously it's not as layered as Belos and Hunter and I'm pretty certain that will have a satisfying conclusion too, but Luz and Belos are narrative foils. I'm not gonna dig into it right now but it kinda fucks hard and I won't complain if there's more of it. But I guess that's a matter of opinion so I won't knock you for that.
Anyway if you haven't liked the direction they took with Hunter's role in the story thus far, you might be disappointed by the upcoming episodes.
I know I won't. At least not when Hunter is concerned. I'm more worried about characters like Willow and Gus.

Everytime I think I'm able to get away from TOH - it always finds a way to reel me back in...
Soooo... about the lack of meaningful conflict between Amity and Luz:
The Amity and Luz problem is such a big fucking issue to tackle - like so fucking big that it will be at least double the length of that long as fuck Lunter post I made. I'm not going to make another post like that SO I'm going to try and put it as simply as I possibly can:
I mean yeah. Amity and Luz not having conflict over their miscommunication issue up until now isn't "realistic" - but it makes perfect sense storywise.
They weren't going to give Luz and Amity actual conflict over their miscommunication issue because they're setting up conflict over Hunter knowing Luz's secret way before Amity did. This is really obvious in Reaching out. Did you notice how Amity's special day just so happens to fall on the same day of the anniversary of Luz's father's death? That was not coincidental - that was intentional.
It was done to stop Luz and Amity from getting into conflict before the third act - the act where the protagonist receives their "truth" and is forever changed by it.
In storytelling there's a hierarchy of importance with character progression - at the very top of the hierarchy is the protagonist. Because the entire story is shaped around the protagonist's journey (a.k.a their character arc).
This is why Amity's redemption arc could be cut out and this is why they can get away with not bringing her insecurities to the forefront every single time she has a miscommunication issue with her girlfriend (besides in Eclipse Lake... the first episode dedicated to them as a couple is also used to establish their miscommunication problem that persists throughout their relationship btw). Because it's not the right time for LUZ to learn her lesson from Amity.
Amity, to put it as nicely as possible, is a tool to finish off Luz's character arc. She is not as important as Luz - the protagonist - so the writers don't have to dedicate alot of time to flushing her out. And she's not that important to the CORE OF THE STORY like Luz, Hunter, and Belos are. So they can pretty much put her aside and take her out when they need her to do something that's relevant to Luz's character arc.
Edit: We also have to keep in mind that this series had to have alot of stuff cut out, so the whole "Amity is just going to be used as a character that finishes Luz's character arc" is much, MUCH more glaring in this version of the show.

One of the best Quirkless Izuku fics I have ever read
I have always fucking hated slow burn fics where it takes the main couple 37 chapters and 40 thousand words to even kiss. Sometimes it works, but only very rarely. Here, that is mercifully not the case. While the fic itself is only 18 chapters, and Izuku and Shouto don't actually get together until chapter 11, given the actual length of those chapters, that is more than enough time for the author to explore Izuku and Shouto's relationship WHILE THEY'RE IN A RELATIONSHIP. And not only that, but they get together, and they actually stay together. The relationship development is done so brilliantly here because it's done in stages. Strangers, to friction, to amicability, to friends, to boyfriends. And the amount of time that it takes for them to go through these stages is all done in a believable amount of time. Izuku and Shouto's relationship development in this fic is on par with Luz and Amity's relationship development in The Owl House, which can only be a good thing.
Also, along that same vein, when Shouto is actually aware of his feelings, not only does he not beat around the bush and go "welp, guess it's time to pine forever", but the day he realizes that he likes Izuku as more than a friend, he starts making plans to ask him out that same exact day! Like, not only is that extremely realistic (not just for Shouto's character, but also for how people actually act when they have feelings for someone) but it's also really fucking refreshing!
I really love how Izuku was still able to have a sense of proactivity and agency despite being Quirkless AND despite not being in the hero course or being especially skilled in combat or fighting. It's really rare to see that combination of attributes in a bnha fic.
Sometimes the writing style can be a little... heavily wordy at times, but not so much so that I had the desire to stop reading it, which is usually where I tend to drop off in fics that do something similar. Thankfully, though, the dialogue felt very natural and fit well with the characters when they were speaking, because you can have all the clunky narration you want, but the second the dialogue starts getting fucky is when I peace the fuck out. The pacing could also be a little wonky at times, with certain scenes feeling like they're progressing way too slowly but I chalk that up mainly to the word count, and again, it wasn't so bad that it was an active deal-breaker, and when I actually sat down to read it, I almost never felt my attention drifting. Basically, I guess that's a long way of saying that this is not a casual read, but a lot of people like fics they can binge, so.
While I am here primarily for Tododeku, I appreciate that the author didn't feel the need to sacrifice anything about the story for the sake of... fan-service I guess is the best way to put it. Izuku and Shouto are allowed to have their own lives, goals, and stories outside of each other while still developing in their relationship with each other. They even have their own separate support systems, which is something I appreciated. (I cannot stress enough the author's competency at writing good believable relationships).
Also Shinsou is a predominant character in this fic and I love him, and I love that he's basically Izuku's best friend. He and Izuku's friendship is great and reminds me a lot of me and my own best friend.
There's a scene where Shouto goes to Natsu for relationship advice and it's fucking amazing
I cannot believe that shit hit the fan in the FIRST. FUCKING. CHAPTER! Say what you will, but this fic does NOT beat around the bush.
Literally the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it's a part of a series that hasn't updated in forever

A very (un)comprehensive review of the TOH finale:
The long (non) awaited reaction from me and co! It was so hard to steal new names for everyone. Hope you enjoy our nonsense.  Also I have no concept of time or order so if the reactions aren’t in the correct sequence of events oh well. I ain’t watching this episode ever again lmao.
“There was nothing else to be done but to wait for the man who would rise forth to destroy him, for deep inside his soul because  there was no doubt that what he did was evil"- Off, Zone 2.
Sunniva: How are you feeling?
Me: The announcement made me feel like puking and the ad has me trembling in the bathroom for 30 minutes.
Lomes: Well, get ready be mad!
...
Of course it fucking buffers.
* Sunniva gives the the ugliest, thus the prettiest, laugh known to the universe.*
Me: Glad my phobia of vomiting is currently off.
*******************************************************************
Lomes: Ooohhh, everyone run. The Collector drank his evil milk!
Me: Is this meant to be a torrential outflow from an infant star?
Sunniva: His pouty face is cute. Though I generally hate how he’s been animated.
Lomes: I’m still hung up on a quote from the last episode.  You can’t  tell me they’ve been around Philip for centuries and isn’t able to tell that humans can’t eat gravity.
Sunniva: Yeah, even with the isolation, there was the time at the start when Philip was forced to bond with him.
Me: At best the Collector’s and Belos’s relationship will end up like Montreal.
Lomes:???
*******************************************************************
Lomes: This is like an owl house creepypasta.
Me: I think people  rag on creepypastas too much. We shouldn’t be so critical of things.
Sunniva: You’re watching the finale to criticize it.
Me: I’m punching up, okay? I’m punching up-
Sunniva: Isn’t this show incredibly progressive to the point of getting cancelled for it, issues aside for that alone it should be celebrated-
Lomes: Dana is a white woman and half the representation she did last minute and she didn’t even do it well with characters such as Raine-
* A stupid amount of bickering occurs.*
Me: I’m getting cramps and this has already just started…
*******************************************************************
Lomes: "Power noodle." Luz has as weird statements as you.
Me: Hey!
Sunniva: You and Luz are same character.
Me: No, I kin Belos.
Lomes: Of course you do.
Me: Not his war crimes. I kin Junko for those.
Sunniva: The actual Palisman name isn’t any better.
*******************************************************************
Me: I thought Camila was hanging from a noose for a second.  Lomes: True witch hunter style.
*******************************************************************
Sunniva: A “witches  battle.” Ohh, like witches since it’s a witches vs human battle?
Lomes: Is human discrimination in the Isles FINALLY  being addressed ?
Me: Luz poking Amity is funny. (°々°)
*******************************************************************
Sunniva: Ohh, Luz was handed the glyph she taught Pip.
Lomes and I: ♪ You show the lights that stop me turn to STONE! You shine it when I'm alone♫ !
Sunniva: The “ glyphs” in the show  aren’t even actual witch glyphs… I think.
*******************************************************************
Sunniva: That was surprisingly easy to break out of.
Lomes: Damn, everyone else just be weak AF.  Still can’t believe the crew wasted so much time on a dream sequence.
Me: Dream??
Sunniva: Oh no.
Me: ♫ I wear a mask with a smile for hours at a time- ♪
Lomes: Stop.
Me: I actually like that song thought I don’t like Dream.
Lomes: That is the worst opinion you’ve had yet.
Sunniva: They are a fan of the likes of the Chainsmokers.
*******************************************************************
* Literally everytime Hunter comes on screen.*
Someone who will not be named: Look, it’s the albino rat.
Me: STOP CALLING HIM THAT.
* Literally everytime Belos comes on screen.*
That gobhopper:  Kill the white boy!  Kill the white boy!
Me: STOPPPP ( ꒦ິ﹏ ꒦ິ )
*******************************************************************
Us, speeding  through most of the scenes with the Collector: Stoppppppp.
Me: The concept of cringe culture is dead except in relation to them.
*******************************************************************
Me: The Collector made some Fall Guys looking environments.
Lomes: “Hot chocos milk." He literally just said hot chocos milk.
Sunniva, in literal tears: I swear the crew just used the stock sound baby crying effect.
*******************************************************************
Lomes: Damn the Collector’s traumadumping more than you do.
Me: Cole, just get addicted to burnout media like me. Ruin your own life instead of everyone else’s.
Lomes: You’ve definitely ruined lives with your work.
*******************************************************************
Lomes: “Like toys”, like shit! Bitches.
Me: You’re telling me that in Hollow Mind when the Collector gave  the Draining Spell with all the details-
Sunniva: Breathe, breathe, breathe.
Me: I hate that the crew retconned all that made them interesting. The  fandom is actually right, the Collector is wonderbread
*******************************************************************
Me: I loved how the Collector went “ ohhh Belos needs love too, right?” and Luz  was all “ hell nah”.
Lomes:  Based, based.
Sunniva: I want a “We’re like brothers! Stop it I will cry.”
Me: I’m sick of family dynamics honestly.
Sunniva: ...
Lomes: I’ll take care of that silver-blond fox~
*Lomes caught the peach I threw at them. Make sure to exercise regularly guys.*
*******************************************************************
Sunniva: Noelle, I know you said last episode it would better if the crew spend less time focused on the HexSide and HexSquad  but it’s really weird without them there.
Lomes: Honestly with how much the TOH crew fucked  up Hunter’s  disability metaphor I’m glad none of them are getting that much screen time.
Me: I’m more focused on how glad I am that everything is solely Belos’s fault and once he’s gone everyone will live happily ever after.
Sunniva: Like Tengan.
Me: YES!  Belos vs Tengan!
Lomes: Their battle will be legendary!
*******************************************************************
Me: Weird Luz and co are chilling with the Collector while all their other loved ones plus the entire rest of the realm is in danger.
Sunniva: They’re  trying to reason and soothe someone mentally unstable.
Me: Everyone with me everyday.
Sunniva: Nice work king sorry about the mental illness.
******************************************************************** Me: Okay I know that Raine is a bard but the fact Belos had them bring a violin to the throne room is funny to me.
Lomes: Belos just makes the both of them play sick beats instead.
Sunniva: Belos not only wanted to be a hairstylist but a musician as well. Wait, did Raine always have a violin even when they were just a puppet?
* We were too lazy to check lmao.*
********************************************************************
Me: Aghhh! The TOH crew are really going with Belos possessing the  Titan corpse. If they kill Raine I swear to god…
Sunniva: Didn’t Belos need to eat animals for months on end just to gather enough strength to get a solidified form again? And after possessing Hunter for a short time and then getting his magic drained, he needed to consume Grimwalkers just to possesses Raine so how is he strong enough to possess the Titan?
Lomes:  Powerscaling is BS. I just more of his design comes through than the Titan’s do, I wanna see a big Belos.
Me: Like AI Junko! Wish I was a giant AI girl.
Lomes: Don’t we all?
* Sunniva does not.*
********************************************************************
Me: G-Glowing blue eye?!! Sans Undertale?!!!
Lomes: Aww, not enough Belos in the design. But yay, Tina Nose die!
Sunniva: That’s Dana’s self insert which she spent way too much screen time on.
* Lomes Smirks.*
Sunniva: Don’t.
Lomes: Yayyy-
* The peach hit Lomes this time. Sunniva is canonically more fit than me.*
********************************************************************
Me: Belos finally got his wings!
Lomes: ??? Well, Titan fused Belos looks like Tyranitar.
Sunniva: This reminds of the Steven Corruption.
Me: This is the issues of the SU finale but in opposite direction.
Sunniva: Which one?
Me: Both.
Lomes: We could kill way more people than Belos could.
Me: Definitely! And go out like c! Wilbur.
Lomes:  Oohhh, Belos having that brief moment where he gains clarity temporarily and realized he fucked up.
Me: That lucid moment from when you’ve been drowning in your own head,  just when the right memories return for long enough for them to have meaning.
Sunniva: …Only listening to Tide Pools by Pigeon Pit can save us now.
********************************************************************
Me: Not the death-revival. This  is OPM levels of BS!
Sunniva: Wait, there’s an afterlife? WHAT?
Lomes: They never implied that except for potentially in the last episode and even then it was left to interpretation and made very little narrative sense if true.
Me: This is the consistency of Danganronpa 3.
Lomes: It feels like Dana threw me off a terr-
Sunniva: STOP!
******************************************************************** Lomes: This is the worst  thing they could’ve done with the Inbetween.
Me: “Both the king and queen,  best of both things .” You  know what?  I’m stealing that, I’m stealing that!  Try  me Dana.
Lomes: He’s so ugly, his fit is shit!
Me: Ohhhh my god my mangoball toh magicless au parody version was wrong.
Sunniva: Yeah, I wouldn’t want this Titan to rail Belos.
*... I was the one who had to clean up all the peach juice off the floor.* ******************************************************************** Me: They did not Deus Ex Machina us… forget literally any story complaints I’ve had for a series ever,  this is the shit.
Sunniva: That’s actually slang for when something is good.
Me: That makes no sense.
Sunniva: That’s just how it is.
Me: I hate answers like that! I wanna know everything behind everything!
Lomes:  Don’t you get sick thinking  about stuff too hard?
Me: … Hush, I’m going to pee.
Lomes: Have fun.
******************************************************************** Lomes: King’s dad literally just went “Belos is evil cause he’s evil”,   wow.
Sunniva: It makes sense he would think that-
Lomes: Yeah but the narrative isn’t disproving it despite previously going against that stance. That sort of logic is ableist and dehumanizing and often used to excuse fucked up shit!
Me: It is similar to Belos’s ideology. Plus the whole POINT is that there are not supposed to be any ‘ chosen’ ones even though people like Philip think otherwise.
Lomes *glaring at the Titan with the rage of a thousand suns*: How bout we beat you to mush old man?
Sunniva: No violence…******************************************************************* Me: I could enjoy Luz’s badass form if it wasn’t so contrived.
Lomes: OC time, OC time!
Sunniva: I love Luz’s hair, it has a little wave in it.
Me: Yeah, her design is so pretty but I can’t enjoy it even though I would happily hyperfixate on it.
Sunniva: …Want me to cuss out Elon Musk on Twitter?
Me: Yeah. ******************************************************************* Me, gesturing violently at the acid rain: This  is what happens if we don’t stop climate change.
Lomes: We kill fascists?
Sunniva: NO-
*******************************************************************
Me: God of homesickness. May you lead the lost home when you yourself have never had guidance. Let’s play Astral Alleyway as we take moments of silence.
Sunniva: What about Die Anywhere Else?
Me: Too peppy.  Would make a good ending theme though.
Lomes, in abject horror:  They are NEVER getting that off their shoes.
Me: Guess TOH took the statement “ curb stop fascists to death” literally! *cue laugh track.*
******************************************************************* Me: I think Belos is supposed to be more of a symbol and a concept than a person.
Lomes: Why give so much uniqueness to his backstory then?
Me: All antagonists are allowed be people regardless of what ends up being done  with them.
Sunniva: You can’t keep making  parallels between characters and  repeatedly bringing them up only to toss them away in the finale.
Me: …Yeah.
******************************************************************* Lomes: That was one of the worst deaths I’ve ever seen-
Me: Mikan’s execution.
Sunniva: That’s just unfair!
Lomes: Yeah, nothing can top that.
Me: Should’ve just given Belos that lobotomy-
Sunniva and Lomes in unison: STOP. ******************************************************************* Sunniva: People don’t actually care about the specifics of Belos’s death or the logic behind it, just as long as he dies painfully. It’s a way to vent.
Lomes: Glad the crew didn’t make Hunter watch Belos’s death at the very least. Wish Evelyn and Caleb were there though.
Me: If we’re venting then I want to admit I want to put me teeth against Belos’s teeth.
Lomes and Sunniva: …
Me: Texture! (✧∇✧)
******************************************************************* Lomes: YOUR JOKE ENDING WAS PARTIALLY REAL ( *note I wrote it before I actually saw the finale episode air lol*) YOU’RE PSYCHIC AGAIN.
Me: Bruh, they actually put in my made up ending where the Collector is actually from the stars after saying he’s just a wibble kid who needs love and support.
Sunniva: Look at Hooty with that eyelash game though damn. *******************************************************************
Me: I’m just glad they didn’t kill the  prominent non antagonistic enby character of color.
Lomes: Well I’m glad Hunter came out exactly like Caleb.
Sunniva: Yeah, he looks more like Caleb now than ever actually.
Me: Luz stop picking all the courses, it’s going to bite you in ass.
Sunniva: Like, is Luz giving up on the Human Realm completely?
Lomes: True Caleb Wittebane core.
*******************************************************************
Me: Belos dying us is actually a preferable option to what I’ve seen, like being locked away in the Collector’s disk or something.
Sunniva: It’d be the c!Dream prison situation all over again but a million times worse.
Lomes: Imagine if Belos got Danganronpa 2 Bad Ending in the sense he ends up living tucked away in a fantasy world where he believes he’s succeeded in his mission and he and everyone he loves lives  all happily.
Sunniva: Nothingness would’ve been the most fitting ending but since there’s canonically some sort of afterlife…
Me: I want Belos to become a god, of homesickness specifically. He’d have wings covered in plants that have the bones in them peaking out and he’d leave flower paths wherever he went and the inside of his hair would have a blue glow that illuminates the rest of his hair-
Lomes, talking over me : I’m just imagining him going to the afterlife ( singular) and getting his ass beat from all his victims-
Me, now talking over them: I also wanna make an reincarnation au-
Sunniva, talking to self: Yeah, I don’t believe in ‘ the Grimwalkers and Caleb are ghosts’ theory but it’d be funny if Belos became a ghost, he’d be wanted nowhere.
*******************************************************************

And now, for your viewing pleasure, another crossover AU involving a Disney cartoon and a wildly successful media franchise that started in the 1980s!
In this world, stepsisters Luz Noceda and April O’Neil find themselves in the Demon Realm and meet not just Eda and King, but also Eda’s old friend Splinter and his four juvenile anthropomorphic hero terrapin sons Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo. Eda and Splinter have raised the Heroes in a Half Shell in the Owl House for years ever since Splinter found the baby turtles in a pizza box while on the run from the Foot Coven, the black-ops division of the Emperor’s Coven.
The Turtles all attend Hexside in addition to training under Splinter, and their classmates include Amity, Willow, Gus, Casey Jones, Mona Lisa, Mondo Gecko, and numerous other TOH and TMNT characters. The boys also each have their own Palisman, with Leo owning Mayhem from ROTTMNT, Don with Metalhead, Raph with Pepperoni, and Mikey with Klunk. Also, Leo is on the Healing track, Donnie is Oracle, Raph is Bard, and Mikey is Beast Keeping.
Leading the Foot Coven is the Shredder, as per usual, alongside his wife Oroku Miwa aka Kitsune (based off Kitsune from the IDW comics) and their daughters Karai and Pimiko (the latter originating from the Image comics, but more based off the version from Sophie Campbell’s Secret of the Ooze webcomic).
Like in the Mirage Comics, the old live action movies and the 2003 show, the Shredder murdered Hamato Yoshi, but in a marriage of the cartoon and comic origins, Yoshi would use forbidden magic to reincarnate himself in the body of his Palisman Splinter. Gaining an increase in size and intelligence thanks to Yoshi’s spirit inhabiting his body, Splinter would go into hiding until he discovered the Turtles, leading us to today.
In addition to the Oroku family leading the Foot Coven, there’s Krang (still an alien, as the Utroms were forced to evacuate Dimension X to escape being conquered by King Aldrich Leviathan), Baxter Stockman, who in this universe is an old classmate of Eda and Lilith, the trio of Hun, Bebop & Rocksteady, Koya & Bludgeon, Dogpound & Fishface, Hattori Tatsu, Master Khan, Groundchuck & Dirtbag, Dr. Chaplin, and the Stone Soldiers consisting of Traag, Granitor, Aguila, Gato, Serpiente, and Mono.
Due to the relationship between the Emperor’s Coven and the Foot Coven, Lilith finds herself the leader of her own little team consisting of herself, Bebop & Rocksteady, Hun, Stockman, and Karai. Out of the gang, Lilith finds herself closest to Baxter, since they were classmates at Hexside as mentioned above, and Karai due to the two sharing a close, mother-daughter bond that everyone wanted out of Lilith and Amity. In fact, it’s Lilith’s betrayal that causes Karai to question her loyalties to Belos and Shredder, much like her surrogate brother Hunter. Meanwhile, Hun, Bebop and Rocksteady love picking on her for being such a nerdy stick in the mud.
Also existing in this universe are Leatherhead, the Fugitoid and Monkey Brains as part of the faculty of Hexside, Ch’rell as a member of the Emperor’s Coven, Odalia Blight being business partners with Darius Dunn, Madame Null, Max Winters and Eric Sacks, the Bards/Covens Against the Throne being merged with the Mighty Mutanimals (along with a few other members like Tokka & Rahzar, Mortu, and DIGG), some of the characters from Usagi Yojimbo being turned into biped demons, Sunita being adopted alongside Vee by Camila Noceda & Kirby O’Neil, and Jacob Hopkins being an undercover member of the Earth Protection Force.
The Day of Unity progresses mostly the same in this world, only the Shredder rises up to declare himself ruler of the Boiling Isles after Belos’s presumed death while putting bounties on the heads of Eda, Splinter, Lilith, Raine, Darius, Eberwolf, and the rest of the CATTs. Meanwhile, Luz, April, the Turtles, Amity, Willow, Gus, Casey, Lisa, Mondo, Hunter, and Karai are ejected into the Human Realm by King as the Collector is unleashed. Now, the fourteen kids seek to find a way back to the Demon Realm to save their families & friends and the multiverse from Shredder.

LGBTQ Representation in Animated Series In 2020 and Beyond
Tumblr media
In the past year, various series have premiered on broadcast television and streaming platforms with LGBTQ characters and diverse casts. While there is still progress going forward, as every single major studio had failing, poor, or insufficient ratings for LGBTQ-inclusive films in 2019, according to the recent Studio Responsibility Index released by GLAAD, there were a number of LGBTQ characters in animated series which appeared in 2020 on platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, CBS All Access / Paramount +,  YouTube, Cartoon Network, Rooster Teeth and Syfy’s TZGZ animation block, with hope for more in the years to come. Despite the dismal events of 2020, these series are making a big impact when it comes to interesting, strong, and complicated stories for LGBTQ characters, and should be praised for that, regardless of whether the shows are aimed at young adults, children, or mature adults.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 7, and Wayback Machine. This was the third article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on December 29, 2020.
Three big animated series ended this year: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and Steven Universe Future. She-Ra began streaming on Netflix in November 2018, while Steven Universe Future, the limited epilogue series of the inclusive Cartoon Network series, Steven Universe, began in the fall of 2019, and Kipo, another Netflix show, began in January of this year. All three made strides in representation. In addition to those series, there were a host of new and continuing shows like the new all-ages series Cleopatra of Space, an existing all-ages animation titled DC Super Hero Girls, the Mexican animated series, Victor & Valentino, the mature animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, and two YouTube-hosted series (Helluva Boss and My Pride: The Series) that all had LGBTQ characters as well. The same could be said about Magical Girl Friendship Squad, a wonderful mature animation which parodied the magical girl genre, specifically anime like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, its pilot series, Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins, the epilogue series titled Adventure Time: Distant Lands, and the children’s animated series The Owl House. Other series that shined included RWBY, a young adult animation, and the ongoing series, Big Mouth.
Tumblr media
In 2020, lesbian characters appeared throughout these animated series. For example, the final season of Noelle Stevenson’s She-Ra ended with an episode where the two protagonists, Catra and Adora, shown above, kiss and save the world (and universe) from destruction, with the show’s villains defeated in one fell swoop. The show included a lesbian couple (Spinnerella and Netossa), and two other lesbian couples (Light Hope and Mara, Scorpia and Perfuma) were either shown in the show or identified by the show’s creators, while Huntara was shown to be a lesbian character who may have a crush on Adora. At the same time, characters like Pearl and Garnet (a fusion of two Gem beings, Ruby and Sapphire) were shown to be lesbians in the original series, Steven Universe, but not in the epilogue series. Even so, Bismuth was implied to have a crush on Pearl. Additionally, the two moms of a superhero girl, Jessica Cruz (also known as Green Lantern), were introduced in an April 2020 episode of DC Super Hero Girls, while the two moms of Akila (Theoda and Pothina) were introduced in an episode of Cleopatra of Space.
Apart from these examples, Xochi was strongly implied to be lesbian and be in a relationship with Amabel in Victor & Valentino, as a planned date in the Season 2 episode “Carmelita” between Xochi and Amabel was unknowingly foiled by the show’s protagonists. In The Owl House, Amity, a teenage witch, who falls in love with Luz, was confirmed as lesbian by show creator Dana Terrace. Noting is the mate of Hover in the show My Pride: The Series and Ilia Amitola, who has a crush on series protagonist Blake Belladonna, and a lesbian couple (Saphron and Terra Cotta-Arc) appeared for brief moments in the eighth volume/season of RWBY. In the case of Magical Girl Friendship Squad, Daisy, one of the protagonists who is living with a brown-skinned woman named Alex, was shown to be a lesbian, whether through having an ex who worked at a local urgent care clinic named Yolanda or Pansy, the “monogamous live-in girlfriend” in one of the alternative universes. Additionally, Daisy was said to have slept with every barista in a local coffee shop, while Nut, the animal companion of Alex and Daisy, had a former relationship with Verus, the villain. In October 2020, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Mike McMahan, in an interview with Variety, confirmed that Captain Amina Ramsey was ex-girlfriend of Beckett Mariner at Starfleet Academy, and promised that the series would explore more LGBTQ storylines in its second season.
Tumblr media
Gay characters also appeared in various animated series in the past year. For instance, Adora’s friend, Bow, in She-Ra, has two dads, George and Lance, while Rogelio and Kyle were hinted to be in a gay relationship, confirmed by series creator Noelle Stevenson. Furthermore, there were multiple gay characters in The Hollow, and a character in The Owl House, Willow, a friend of Luz, has two dads. While Corvin having a crush on a character only known as “Coffee Dude” in Magical Girl Friendship Squad was implied, it was Kipo which made headlines when it came to gay characters. That is because Benson comes out as gay to Kipo, the show’s titular protagonist, a half-Korean and half-Black girl, who is also half-human and half-mutant. He later has a boyfriend named Troy, and their romance is an important subplot in the show’s final season, as shown in the above image.
The same could be said for bisexual characters, to an extent. In She-Ra, Bow and Glimmer, two of the show’s main characters, were implied to be bisexual, as was Sea Hawk, due to his relationship with a princess named Mermista, and previous relationship with a man named Falcon. More significant was a bisexual princess named Entrapta, who is autistic and Luz, a teenage Dominican-American witch in The Owl House, who is shown, and confirmed, to be bisexual. A mature animated series, Harley Quinn, on HBO Max, focused on the relationship between two bisexual women, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, which blossoms with various kisses and a romantic ending to the show’s most recent season. Another mature series, Helluva Boss, which had a pilot in November 2019, showed a few episodes this year, which featured two bisexual characters: Moxxie and Stolas. In a bold announcement, Arryn Zech, voice actor of Blake in RWBY confirmed that she was bisexual in a video stream. Additionally, the fact that Ramsey, in Star Trek: Lower Decks was Mariner’s ex-girlfriend, that Mariner previously dated Steve Levy, and that, as McMahan put it, “every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual,” with none intentionally made straight or cisgender, strongly hints that she is bisexual – or perhaps even pansexual, which wouldn’t be a first for characters in 2020, as Blitzo, in Helluva Boss, is pansexual.
Tumblr media
Finally, there were various non-binary, genderfluid, and trans characters in animated series in 2020, a true sign that things are changing in the realm of animated television. For one, in She-Ra is a non-binary shapeshifter named Double Trouble, who has a pivotal role in the show’s last two seasons, Asher, a friend of Kipo, confirmed to be non-binary by those working on the show, and Y5, a teenage scientist and rabbit with an ambiguous gender. Steven Universe Future, on the other had at least two non-binary characters. For one, the non-binary and intersex fusion of Steven and his friend, Connie, Stevonnie, makes a reappearance in the series. Secondly, a non-binary person, appears and helps Steven get over his feelings of resentment toward his friends “leaving him” and is shown to be the partner of Sadie, a singer of a former band in the town. Apart from this, every single Gem being featured in the show is a non-binary woman, as asserted by series creator Rebecca Sugar. May Marigold in RWBY is a trans woman, as is a new character in Big Mouth named Natalie, and Jewelstar, voiced by a trans male actor, Alex Blue Davis, appeared in an episode of She-Ra.
And, perhaps the most interesting intersection of gender and sexuality in 2020 was the episode “Obsidian” of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, which focused on the relationship between a bisexual woman Marceline “Marcy” the Vampire Queen and Princess Bonnibel “Bonnie” Bubblegum, of a not-yet-known sexual orientation. In the final episode of the original series, Adventure Time, Marcy and Bonnie had kissed, making their relationship canon, with this episode giving more of their backstory and their relationship together.
With these 15 animated series, and others like The Loud House, BoJack Horseman, Castlevania, Hoops, and DuckTales, along with minor characters in Clifford the Big Red Dog and T.O.T.S, there is hope in the future for diverse storylines and expanded representation. For one, it is possible that Kipo will come back in 2021, not just in a comic form, but as a movie, as the series creator, Rad Sechrist, promoted a hashtag for a movie about Wolf, one of the story’s protagonists. Secondly, in January 2021, the final season of Carmen Sandiego will premiere on Netflix, which could end with a lesbian relationship between Carmen and Julia “Jules” Argent, and the new series, DeadEndia, streaming the same year will have a trans teenager named Barney as one of the protagonists.
Next year may bring the second season of The Owl House, with a growing relationship between the two teenage witches, Luz and Amity, a new season of the all-ages animation, Lumberjanes, the mature animated series Hazbin Hotel – created by the same people as Helluva Boss – chock full of LGBTQ characters, the series, Q-Force, which centers around a group of LGBTQ superheroes, the animated web series Gen:Lock, which features a genderfluid character named Val(entina) Romanyszyn, and the upcoming series S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters. For the latter series, it has already been established that one of the protagonists (Salem) is non-binary and pansexual cryptid, joined by a gay photographer named Oliver, and an asexual psychic medium named Petra. If McMahan follows through on his promise in the interview he had with Variety magazine, the next season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will explore Mariner’s implied bisexual identity and if rumors are true, then the third season of Final Space will have LGBTQ characters. Similarly, the original pitches of Sara Eissa’s animated action-adventure series, Astur’s Rebellion, which Crunchyroll turned down this year, which has a diverse cast, and the 2d animated series Recorded by Arizal, the prelude which aired on Rooster Teeth, both had LGBTQ protagonists. If these series move into production, then this would expand further stories for LGBTQ characters in animation. So, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2021 in terms of animated series and these developments will undoubtedly affect the ongoing war between streaming platforms for more subscribers, profits for themselves, and film distribution itself.

Owl House Discourse
I’ve had my mind on this topic for quite a while and I really don’t care if it upsets anyone at this point. I have no idea since when did people start considering Hunter to be a “main character” in the narrative. The Owl House no matter what any of you white progressives want will be always about Luz. I know you all don’t relate to her because she’s brown and actually has a culture unlike you but that doesn’t mean that you can push her aside for Hunter. Hunter is not half as interesting as Luz and yet he gets talked about the most. Nowadays the only reason that people talk about Luz is because of her relationship to Amity (a white girl). I know Dana says she likes Hunter the most but honestly that says more about her and is not an excuse for you to hyper-fixate on this white boy as much as y’all do. Some of you say with a serious face that “Hunter in my headcanon is neurodivergent” when you already have characters who are so obviously ND but because they’re not white none of you care.
Also, I find it so weird how some of you overlook the trauma of Luz and say that Hunter has had it the worse. Everyone overlooks Luz, Belos underestimated her. She never got closure because she had to go through the portal. Hunter was on the wrong side for most of his life; meanwhile, Luz knew that Belos was the enemy and nobody BELIEVED her. Y’all only discuss the trauma when it happens to your favorite white boy and not Luz. Tbh before this recent episode I really thought that Luz needed therapy because her obsession with self sacrifice and continuous self loathing is a huge problem. As a Latinx queer person, I can tell you that I have had this “phase” in my teenage years. Life is so miserable and you are surrounded by so much violence that you consider yourself a burden or the reason for why everything bad happens. Anyways, I hope you all can learn to be normal by recognizing your biases.
