What does the Batfam wear to the 2021 Met Gala?
okay, so was I thinking about this until I saw this post? Absolutely not. Did I promptly think super excessively about it until it wouldn't leave me alone and I decided on looks for everyone? Absolutely yes.
All of the Waynes and their Plus Ones would be on theme except Bruce (who, while generally boring and absolutely one of the "sea of white men in plain black tuxes," at least trades his blacks for a deep blue for the Met Gala), because there's no point in going otherwise.
Selina: decides that if Bruce is going to be boring, she'll have to be ostentatious and on theme enough for the both of them. She eventually chooses to glam it up Classic Hollywood style and goes for a dramatic black number that's vaguely remeniscent of Lauren Bacall:
Tumblr media
Dick: wears this suit specifically (and looks damn good in it):
Tumblr media
When prompted, he says some very pretty words about honoring early 80s American mens' fashion. In reality, he was too busy to truly go shopping and the suit's been sitting in his closet for 10 years because he never got rid of it, still fits him like a glove, and happened to be On Theme.
Jason: goes for a biker aesthetic specifically so he can justify wearing a leather jacket to a fancy party. Personally, I think he shows up looking like a combination of Chris Pine in that one desert photoshoot+the 1950s "Marlon Brando-as-Johnny Strabler" greaser style biker look:
Tumblr media
Tim: Sees the "Americana" theme and immediately goes straight to his punk rock fan roots. He absolutely shows up in a slightly more traditional-looking version of this:
Tumblr media
Damian: wanted to wear an "animal rights" statement piece (ala House Reps. Carolyn Maloney's ERA dress and AOC's 'Tax the Rich' gown). Bruce and Alfred eventually managed to talk him down to this tasteful and understated (but still statement) suit instead:
Tumblr media
Babs: Babs chooses a disabled designer to help her pay homage to and recreate this iconic Jackie Kennedy look:
Tumblr media
Cass: While I think her first preference to be on theme would be a 1920s Flapper-style dress (probably in gold or pink), she could also easily be convinced to honor Anna May Wong by wearing a perfect replica of her famous dragon dress:
Tumblr media
Steph: decides to channel both her hellraiser roots and her childhood desire to wear princess dresses and wears a slightly updated version of this iconic Alice Roosevelt gown, complete in "Alice Blue" (she elected not to wear her signature eggplant purple for once in order to better fit the theme):
Tumblr media
Alternatively, she wears this dress and (like Amanda Gorman) calls it an homage to the flag:
Tumblr media
Either way, she's getting her princess dress Bruce, pull out the damn checkbook.
Duke: Duke thought about making A Point, then he thought about blending in because he was nervous, and finally decided to make this completely different but still stylishly relevant Point:
Tumblr media
He walks out wearing an all-white double-breasted suit in the style of Jazz Age musician Duke Ellington (complete with a set of two-toned Oxfords) and is unanimously complimented for it

── the high council is prepared to hear the story of EVELYN CHARLOTTE ‘ LOTTIE ‘ BANKS , a VAMPIRE while noted as a WANDERER. we might of mistaken them as MADELAINE PETSCH. appearances may be deceiving, with immortality being so common among supernaturals. this being has walked the earth for NINETY years, and their face reflects an age of TWENTY THREE they’re a CITIZEN of estonia and will be residing in TALLIN.
during their stay of the harvest they shall work by day as a STRIPPER to blend in with the mortal crowd. however, at night you might find them as AN ESCORT / ASSASSIN. they’re UNHAPPY about the harvest, however, they plan to please the high council.
PERSONALITY.
vampire beauty queen , primadonna , self-proclaimed princess. this darling girl has always loved attention , luxury , all things beautiful and transitioning to the darkness only heightened that love. so much so that she will do just about anything to satisfy her own wants or needs. lottie is ruthless , verging on sociopathic. she is delicate , but she is dangerous. she is by no means unfeeling though , nor incapable of love. she can be sweet , she can be soft , she can be pink cheeks and bright smiles just as she can be bloody lips and deranged laughter. she is genuinely kind , loving and gentle unless your death would make her happier than your being alive.
ruling planet: mercury — the planet of communication body parts: shoulders , arms , hands element: air good day: fascinating , original , resourceful , charming , wise , adventurous bad day: restless , distracted , two-faced , judgmental , depressed , overwhelmed favorite things: cell phones , fast cars , trendy clothes , obscure music , guitars , books , clubbing least favorite things: small-minded people , dress codes , authority figures , silence , routines secret wish: to have all the answers how to spot her: mischievous twinkle in her eyes,  humming , talking with her hands where you’ll find her: taking pictures , behind the bar , in a chat room , playing devil’s advocate keywords: communication , collaboration , synergy , cleverness , wittiness , inventiveness ,  ingenuity
charlotte’s energy circulates in a quick and frenetic way , witty wordplay and dynamic dialogue are her forte. she is great for brainstorming and socializing , but craves “ twin flame ” and kindred spirit energy and is always up for an intellectual meeting of the minds.
under the influence she can find herself with the gift of gab , talking and conversing with others for hours hopping from pop culture trends to deep political topics. beware of when she becomes a “ gossip girl , ” as she can crank up the rumor mill. as renowned dr. bernie siegel says , “ we have the ability to cure with either ‘ words ’ or kill with ‘ swords. ' ”
the essence of charlie’s energy is fascinating , original , resourceful , charming , wise , and adventurous. some negative manifestations can devolve into more restless , distracted , two-faced , judgmental , depressed , and overwhelmed energy.
lottie has a tendency to ride the roller coaster of life , spiraling skywards one minute and plunging into lows the next. if you can keep up with her vibes though , you’ll have one hell of a thrill !
charlotte exhibits great creative synergy , instantly connecting people to each other. always inclined to spend time with friends and focused on changing the world one idea at a time.
a little bit older and wiser , more flexible and comfortable with change than others. she can “ chameleon ” herself to fit into a variety of situations.
can come across as clever and quick-witted , eager to dish out the juiciest pieces of news and happenings to their friends via text message and social media. in case that’s not enough , she’ll probably send you a snapchat story for good measure.
lottie loves fast cars , trendy clothes and any wacky gadgets or games they can tinker around with. part of the fun ( and curse ) of this fiery red head is that you’re never quite sure which personality you’re going to experience. will it be the vivacious , pun-dishing jokester or the snarky , mean-spirited critic ? if you’re willing to see fifty shades of crazy , she’ll color your life in thrilling ways !
BACKGROUND.
evelyn charlotte banks was born june fourth , 1930 and was given the dark gift in the early fifties ( so you’ll definitely notice some call backs to that time period ). she has grown and developed and adapted throughout time better than most , but you can take the sock hop away from the girl but not out of her. she remembers her life before , but doesn’t dwell on nor even really miss it.
she grew up in your rather classic straight lace upper middle class suburban family and community with her perfect nuclear family. the town they lived in was small , close knit , and everyone knew everyone but especially who evelyn’s family was.
she was in a lot of pageants growing up and was even platinum blonde for most of her human life , because she was so afraid her red hair would keep her from being successful.
when she was eighteen years old with big shiny dreams of silver screens , luxury , and eyes all on her was all she could think of. she left her family and their small generational hometown in georgia for bigger , better things in none other than hollywood.
she was on her way ,  so desperate to be in the movies and be like marilyn monroe but shortly after is when she became ensnared by darkness and evil.  she wasn’t very successful at all in the beginning so , she started wearing tighter , shinier outfits when she was on stage when suddenly she started getting actual recognition.
she wasn’t acting like she had intended , but it turned out her voice was good enough to land her plenty of lounge singing gigs in multiple joints. it was one particularly dark , seedy , dangerous joint that only opened once the sun set completely and closed upon the sun rise that she finally started to get propositioned to do so-called ‘ film gigs. it was also in this place where she met him for the first time.
( tw: cult ment. ) her maker is very old and before she ever knew he was anything more than a handsome older gentleman she was fully under his control. he was something of a cult leader who for the most part glamoured his ‘ followers ‘ , but that was never necessary with charlotte. she was thoroughly and completely in love with her maker , she even ‘ married ‘ him and lived on his compound.
( tw: rape ment. , assault ment. ) it wouldn’t be for a few more years that he would finally turn her ,and only after he found her brutally beaten and raped for nothing more than a snuff film. her maker found her on the verge of death and wasted no time in saving her life by bestowing his dark gift upon her.
( tw: murder ment. ) to say that lottie felt indebted to and fell in love with her maker to the point of obsession was an understatement , she would do anything and everything he asked of her including murder not in the name of feeding.
( tw: death ment. ) the films she was in were kept in the dark underbelly of the industry and no one was none the wiser , not to mention everyone thought she was dead after her last film.
so , she eventually did make her debut in film and was even on the silver screen finally. this only lasted for as long as she could get away with not aging before eventually she disappeared off the radar with her maker. the two traveled far and wide for a long time , but eventually went their separate ways even though lottie wanted nothing of the sort her maker commanded she live her own life without him now.
( tw: murder ment. ) she has since become something of a murderer ?? she prefers to call herself an assassin but it’s rare anyone actually pays her to murder anyone. you could even call her  a serial killer if you take into account that her victims are almost always men of the unsavory variety , but she has two sides to her personality and it’s not like she’s full maniac.
ETC.
if you know what yandere means she fits that description very well , and if you don’t know what it means well:  a common term in otaku fandom , a yandere is a person ( usually female ) romantically obsessed with someone to the point of using violent means to get them in their arms. often can be seen featured with a sharp weapon and a psychotic grin.
pretty much she comes off as this sweet , lovely , beautiful woman with lots of talent but in reality she can switch that off in an instant and literally kill you without any hesitation if it benefits her or someone she loves.
anyway she has been in estonia for only a bit now , but how long is flexible. she probably likes the scenery and the supernatural presence , but she’s honestly not a country mouse at all.
also not that she needs money , but there is very little she loves more than attention and money. she works at a club as live entertainment on occasion , singing or stripping or bartending or occasionally doing , mostly for the attention but also if she’s in need of money.

  Welcome to “8 Questions with…..”
I recently was approached by a producer named Chris Morrisey about talking with our next guest Emmanuel Osorio,a 19 year old film director who is prepping his first film for release. Now normally interviewing a artist with no track record is a high risk because there isn’t anything the public can actually see for themselves. But as anyone who knows me either through my blog or in real life can tell you,I love to find new voices no matter where they may come from. Giving a young man like Emmaunel a platform to share his story is no different from giving a band their first show or in my own case, sharing my first film review. We all have to start with step one, right? Besides,I could sense that same excitement I feel when I was talking with Chris,he has found a talented director and smart young man in Emmaunel Osorio and believes he is destined for big things….and my gut is telling me that Chris is right. With that in mind..let’s go ask Emmanuel his 8 Questions……
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your current project.
My name is Emmanuel Osorio and I am a 19 year old Latino filmmaker, writer, actor, producer and film buff. I was born and raised in the amazing city of Los Angeles and I am currently working on my first feature film titled “BLASÉ L.A.”   Blasé L.A. is a semi-autobiographical time capsule of Los Angeles that follows a group of young millennials growing up in this fame and selfie obsessed city. Prior to Blasé L.A., I had a huge interest in photography and visual art. I have photographed everything from editorial fashion shoots to landscapes and everything in between. I also have directed and acted in several plays prior to jumping into filmmaking. It felt like a natural transition to combine the best of both worlds and explore what comes out of it.
Tumblr media
While you’re only 19, Los Angeles has a way of making folks grow up a bit faster. What three impressions has growing up in Los Angeles left on you?
Growing up in the city of Los Angeles has very much shaped me to be the person I am today. Hollywood and the entertainment industry made a huge impression on me early on, it is hard not to be dazzled by the glitz and glamour of it all. I always enjoyed reading books and watching movies as a child but I didn’t always have time or access to it because I was busy with school work. My mother always pushed me to attempt new things to the best of my ability. She constantly placed me in environments that I would learn from. When I was able to, I would focus on music, dance, art, acting, and sports. At a very young age, I was hand selected from a group of children to participate in an all-paid dance scholarship in Downtown L.A. While doing that, I started to notice that opportunities for success can be found anywhere if you are determined and willing to put in the effort, so I tend to strive for perfection as much as possible in anything I do.
I feel that L.A. is so diverse with many different cultures and that made a great impression on me as well. Most of the people I met growing up moved here from somewhere else to pursue their dreams in the entertainment industry. I feel that I learned a lot from just hearing people’s various stories about life before arriving to L.A. and I got to witness the ups and downs and see how much dedication is involved if you want to become successful in any type of career.  I decided early on that when I finished high school I would focus on making my goals a reality. This city offers so many opportunities and there is room for everyone to succeed.
After high school, I got a scholarship to a college 60 miles outside of Los Angeles and my family highly encouraged me to accept it. I was torn because this college is in a very secluded location and I knew it would isolate me being so far away from L.A. While there, I felt very sheltered and continued to work on writing and photography as a creative outlet. It was easy to get distracted because the other students there didn’t have many career goals and were just attending classes on auto-pilot. There was a cabin fever vibe with everyone being stuck on the campus with nowhere to go, so the kids were all about partying at night and oversleeping the next day, then showing up late to classes — not caring if you completed the assignments or received good grades. It, unfortunately, was a toxic environment and I realized that if I stayed there, I would never be able to focus on achieving my dreams. I needed to take a leave and come back to L.A. On the bright side, the college party lifestyle experience gave me a lot of material to put into my script. I was able to make lemonade out of lemons, so to speak.
Tumblr media
What led you into making your own films?
I always have been fascinated by movies and the stories people tell visually. In my early teens, I began to discover a lot of classic Hollywood films and game changing movies by directors like Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo Del Toro, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and Robert Rodriguez. Watching their films inspired so many ideas of my own, I decided that I want to do what they do. These filmmakers have opened up a whole new creative space for me to play in and I am loving every minute of it!
Tumblr media
I read the synopsis for your film,do you feel your generation is shallow and materialistic? Is film one of the last things that will bring people together for a face to face interaction?
I do notice people of all ages with those traits but it’s all because of smart-phones and advanced technology. I feel that going to the cinema is one of the only places right now where you have to shut your phone off for two hours and focus on something other than social media. I think it is great that a lot of movie theaters are very strict about making sure nobody can interrupt a film.  During High School and my short time in college, I felt a lot of the kids there were all about social status and there is a huge obsession with the internet and how many “likes” and comments you get on your social media photo posts. At times, It all seemed like a competition. I love that technology has evolved and that we have access to use these tools to our advantage, but I remember recently sitting at a restaurant with a group of friends and some of us were texting each other even though we were sitting directly across one another at the table. The minute the food was served, everyone whipped out their phones and took photos of the food for their instagram feeds. Times like that make me feel like my generation can be superficial and shallow. Going to a movie theater with a group of friends and then talking with each other about the film after it ends feels special. I appreciate that outlets such as Netflix and Hulu exist and people have more access to discover films, but I truly hope people continue to keep movie theaters in business by taking the time to escape and experience the stories we dream up and create for everyone. I want my films to be seen on the big screen in dark cinema. If someone watches on their cell phone or laptop there are too many distractions and you don’t get the full experience.
Tumblr media
What are three things that surprised you the most in directing a film for the first time?
The first thing that surprised me was how easy things started to come together once the script was completed and I started to map out how to turn this all into a reality. I was able to get great feedback and suggestions from people I met in the industry through networking. They happily gave me great advice just by politely asking a lot of questions.
Another thing that surprised me was how comfortable I was at solving problems by finding creative solutions. Instead of being stressed or disappointed if we lost a certain location or couldn’t get a brand we specially wanted for a scene, I was able to tap into my creativity as a writer and tweak the script or dialog to make things work and still be satisfied with the changes.
I also wrote the main character in the film for myself to perform as an actor since the storyline is semi-autobiographical. I think it was surprising was how challenging, yet rewarding it was to direct myself and rely on my crew and producers to guide me through it. There was a huge  trust involved and I couldn’t have an ego or be too self conscious when we filmed the scenes I was in.
Tumblr media
How did you go about gathering the resources and money for your project? Why would investors gamble on a newcomer? How did you pitch your film?
That was a big challenge in the beginning and very intimidating while writing my script. I asked a lot of other filmmakers what avenues they took to raise money or find investors. Most of them suggested crowdfunding or making a short film as a calling card to show to film studios and possible investors. I was lucky enough to meet my producers through networking at film screenings and various film events. Everyone I met told me they were impressed that I have such a drive and determination at such a young age. One producer said I should just be daring and make the full film and skip making a short. This producer introduced me to other people he knew in the industry that he felt would connect with the storyline and overall vibe of the project. Things clicked and came together and I was lucky enough that people believed in me and the project and decided to take a chance on me. Things came together very quickly which was a little overwhelming, but it all felt right and as if it was meant to be,  so I am even more determined now to make sure this film is a huge success. I truly want to have a long term career in this industry and continue making films for years to come so I am willing to invest in myself and work as hard as possible to achieve my goals.
Tumblr media
What three directors working today do you admire most and why?
Quentin Tarantino is a huge inspiration to me! I regularly go to see films at his movie theater, the New Beverly Cinema,  to discover many classic films I didn’t have a chance to see growing up. I feel like his career and the success of his films have paved the way for people like me by proving that anything is possible. Guillermo Del Toro also inspires me. He is so humble and I recently attended the unveiling presentation of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It made me think that one day I might be able to have my own star as well. Robert Rodriguez is another huge inspiration. I read his book Rebel Without a Crew early on and it gave me so much confidence to take chances. His motto is No risk, No gain.
Tumblr media
What kind of films do you want to make? Do you feel the bigger the budget the less creative freedom you lose?
I want to make films that open doors for other people and inspire others to follow my footsteps. If I can do it than anybody else can if you put in the hard work. I want to tell compelling diverse cultural stories and come up with original ideas that Hollywood hasn’t showcased yet. I want to have creative freedom at any budget. I feel like if you stay true to your creative vision you can tell stories with any size budget. I hope to continue to surround myself with people who believe in me and believe in my art to be able to do this for as long as possible because I love it!
Tumblr media
What is next for for you after this film?
BLASÉ L.A, is currently in post production and should be ready to premiere in early 2020. Cannes Film Festival is a big goal. I would like to tour the film in as many cities and countries as I can. I want it to be seen in as many theaters as possible. I have some other scripts I am starting to write but my main goal right now is to present BLASÉ L.A. to the world. I definitely have a follow-up film in mind but I think it will all come together once this film is released.
The cheetah and I flying to watch your latest film project but we are a day early and you are playing tour guide, what are we doing?
The great thing about L.A. is that there are so many different things to do within a short drive (as long as you don’t run into too much traffic). L.A. is a place where you can go to the beach in the morning then drive two hours to the mountains and play in the snow. It is a melting pot of so many different cultures and amazing mini cities. You can go to downtown LA and feel like you are in New York, then head over to the beach and soak up the artistic hippie vibe of Venice Beach. You can get a gourmet latte and window shop at all the posh designer stores in Beverly Hills then head to Disneyland and be a kid again. There is a place to basically fit every mood. There are so many famous landmarks and historic places that all can be seen in just a few hours. Hollywood Boulevard is a must if you are into anything movie related. I love this city and my film BLASÉ L.A is also a loving tribute to it.
I like to thank both Emmanuel for the interview and Chris for helping secure it.We will be looking forward to seeing “BLASE L.A.” in 2020 and reviewing it as well We wish nothing but the best for Emmanuel….
You can follow Emmanuel a couple of different ways:
You can follow him on his very busy InstaGram page. You can also see whats coming next via his IMDb page.
Its been an incredible time as of late with all these interviews but don’t worry, the cheetah and I are still reviewing films/TV shows as well and have some great films coming up.
Feel free to drop a comment below and thank you for your support! 8 Questions with………film director/writer Emmanuel Osorio Its 5:17 pm Welcome to "8 Questions with....." Nicknamed the East Coast Oscars by many, the Met Gala is held on the first Monday of every May. Anna Wintour ( editor-in chief of Vogue since 1988) throws the most elite fashion event of the year inviting the biggest names in fashion and Hollywood. The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute marks the grand opening of each year’s exhibit. The exhibit’s theme sets the tone for the  gala night, so guests are expected or encouraged to dress according to the theme. While some opt to go all the way and take the risk, others tend to make a splash of their own on their own terms.  Either way, it’s a fashion lover’s paradise as well as a memorable night for stylistas everywhere.  This year’s theme was honoring fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, the founder and designer behind Comme des Garçons. She is the only living designer to be honored since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. Kawakubo, known for being quiet and reclusive, tends to shy away from the media and interviews, because she believes that her designs speak for themselves.  She is known to object on having to explain beyond the title she gives each collection. Her inspiration goes against the norms of the fashion world. Her anti-fashion inspired designs are rather innovative and belong in a category of their own, with all their different shapes, sizes and deconstructed looks. While her creations might seem outlandish and confusing to the masses, there is a beauty in knowing that they came from scratch and that her designs are truly visionary,  unlike anything we see day to day and certainly far from boring. They are memorable. These are just some of her designs from past seasons. Yannis Vlamos/Indigital.tvConde Nast Archive / Vogue.comYannis Vlamos/Indigital.tv
As you can see Kawakubo’s designs are anything but ordinary. Let’s see who took that risk and what the others wore last night!

Ladies in RED
If you were busy doing a double take over all the red this year, you weren’t alone. The reason behind the crimson color was an ode to Rei’s transitional collection back during the Fall of  1988. Brighter colors made their way into her collections at a time when she was designing mostly with black. At the time, she declared that “red was the new black.”

In conclusion, we all understand the Met Gala is a time for guests and designers to take risks and at least try to do their best to adher to the theme.  Comme des  Garçons certainly deviates from the idea of your typical red carpet fashion. It’s avante garde, abnormal and more than likely leaving many baffled. I hand it to Helen Lasichanh who went full theme ahead. However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t have questions. Such as …how did she eat or drink? She certainly didn’t have access to her hands….did Pharrell spoonfeed her? So… many…questions!! Rihanna also honored the theme in a beautiful abstract design from one of Rei’s recent collections. She looked stunning, but then again, does Rihanna ever look anything less than gorgeous?  Some others who took risks were Gigi Hadid who I believe is one of the only humans who could ever make such a lack of color look bold and beautiful.
Last but not least there was Zendaya, J-LO and Blake. Ohh J-LO, I love you so. I am beyond thrilled that she went with a design by Valentino that was inspired by classic hollywood. Even though, this wasn’t exactly honoring the theme, I think it was outside of the realm of the glitz and glam she normally wears. I don’t know about you, but I am over the naked dress trend, so I would like to see more of this and less than less, if you get what I mean. The robin egg blue gown beautifully complimented her natural beauty and reminded me of something either Grace Kelly or Jackie O may have worn back in the day.  PS. What about her and A-Rod making their official debut as a couple? I mean wow….talk about one good looking duo.
Then there was Blake who was a vision in custom Atelier Versace. The beautiful train was so exquisite and must have taken hours upon hours to design. Her beautiful sapphire earrings were just an added bonus to their marvelous look.
Finally, there was Zendaya in a beautiful Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda collection design. Her hair and makeup were perfection. I find it hard to believe that there is anyone else on this planet that could make this gown look any better. Who else could wear a dress with parrots all over and look this amazing? Yes…I am looking at you Nicole Kidman. Zendaya won this battle. Your Gucci comes in second.
I have listed my favorites below. Tell me your thoughts and comment who made your best dressed list?
Zendaya
Jennifer Lopez
Blake Lively
Gigi Hadid
Lily Aldridge
Rihanna
1. Zendaya in Dolce & Gabbana
2. Jennifer Lopez in Valentino
3. Blake Lively in Atelier Versace
4. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger
5. Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren
6. Rihanna in Comme des  Garçons

The 2017 Oscars
I make no apologies for loving the Oscars, despite how stupid and wrong they often are, as evidenced by the fact that Hitchcock, Kubrick, and PT Anderson don’t have a single award between them. It took until fucking 2007 for Scorsese to get one, for god’s sake. Nevertheless I enjoy the glamour, the Old Hollywood feel, and the utter ridiculousness of it all. It’s a fun night.
Damian Chazelle’s La La Land is almost definitely going to be the story on Sunday. We don’t really know the extent to which it will dominate the lower categories, but Best Picture, Best Director, and a few others look pretty safe.
Chazelle is an immense talent. The guy just turned 32. Whiplash is, in my view, one of the five or ten best American films of the 21st century. He deserves credit for taking all the capital he accumulated from Whiplash and putting it on the line for this kind of passion project – an ode to classic Hollywood musicals, featuring two actors who don’t sing or dance particularly well (sorry). The critical adulation and box office success of La La Land were not assured. It was a risk that obviously paid off beyond what even he could have imagined (Here’s to the ones who dream, etc.).
As achievements in storytelling, La La Land doesn’t stand with either Manchester by the Sea or Moonlight, two extraordinary films that explore what it means to be human in a way rarely seen on the screen. There is a depth of feeling to those films that La La Land obviously wasn’t even attempting to match. Kenneth Lonergan and Barry Jenkins have made masterpieces and it’s unfortunate that, barring a major surprise, neither will be recognized to the degree that they should be. Either film would have owned 2015 but in 2016 they happened to run into this juggernaut (and each other).
Like many others, I saw La La Land only after absorbing months of critical adulation, bordering on ecstasy. It was impossible to suppress expectations. And while I can’t say I was blown away, I wasn’t disappointed, either. I think everything after the first act is really good. For the first thirty minutes or so you’re thinking it’s just going to be this light musical, but eventually the feel of the movie shifts to something a bit darker and more interesting. The story and characters remain thin, but the cinematography is striking, and Stone and Gosling bring undeniable warmth and charisma. It may be the most rewatchable film of the year.
Chazelle took a big swing with this – something we all want from our auteurs. So as much as I believe both Manchester and Moonlight are more deserving, as the kids like to say, I’m not even mad. If I did have a vote, I would probably go with Manchester for Best Picture and Lonergan for Best Director. That’s my movie of the year. But barring something weird happening, Chazelle is taking everything. If it’s a real tidal wave, and La La Land equals or even breaks the record of 11 wins, it will be interesting to see how all of this looks in ten or twenty or fifty years. Is this really a singular film that deserves to be the all-time Oscars champ? Will it actually hold up against the other great American musicals? Ehh. I don’t know.
A few thoughts on the other categories:
Best Supporting Actress The story here is that Viola Davis and her snot got dropped into this category to avoid the Best Actress bloodbath. She has a lot of screentime in Fences, nearly as much as Denzel, and it’s pretty ridiculous for her to be competing in the same category as Michele Williams, who appears in only a few (heart-stopping) scenes in Manchester. I’m not a fan of this kind of playing with categories and I think the Academy should crack down on it. So yes, Viola has the most impressive performance of these five, but Williams’ work in Manchester – as well as Naomie Harris’s in Moonlight – is, or should be, the reason this category exists.
Best Supporting Actor I was glad my guy Michael Shannon was the Nocturnal Animal to get nominated, even after Aaron Taylor Johnson’s inexplicable win at the Globes. Johnson got to ham it up in that movie but I thought Shannon’s performance was ultimately more interesting. Jeff Bridges provided the full Bridges Experience in Hell or High Water but this looks like Mahershala Ali’s night, and rightfully so. Who knew Remy from House of Cards was capable of this? I’m excited to see where his career goes from here. His speech should be one of the highlights of the night.
Best Actress Emma Stone was the heart of La La Land. She acted circles around Gosling in that movie and clearly gave it everything she had. She is always great. I see that she is a heavy favorite to win. All due respect to her, and to the goddess Isabelle Huppert, but I feel like there’s some conspiracy here against Natalie Portman I haven’t been let in on. What she did in Jackie, in my opinion, towers above anything else here. It doesn’t even seem like a close call. I don’t know what’s going on.
Best Actor This race has gotten quite a bit juicier following Denzel’s surprise win at the SAG awards. Word is that past accusations of sexual harrassment may doom Casey Affleck but I think this is probably being overstated? He lost the SAG but he has still dominated awards season. He’s only a slight betting favorite now but I’m still hoping he gets it. Denzel is one of my favorite actors alive but Casey gave the performance of a lifetime in Manchester, portraying grief and suffering in a way that I’m not sure they’ve ever been portrayed on the screen. He deserves this moment.
Best Original Screenplay I loved what Taylor Sheridan and Yorgos Lanthimos did with Hell or High Water and The Lobster, but this is a no-brainer. Kenneth Lonergan is a writer, first and foremost, and the writing in Manchester is stellar. Chazelle taking this may prove to be the biggest injustice of the night.
Best Adapted Screenplay I’m not sure Moonlight’s power is primarily derived from its script, but I’m happy to see Jenkins win here against this field.
Best Cinematography The American Society of Cinematographers went with Lion, which was kind of odd, but I can’t see La La Land being denied here. Nor should it be. The opening sequence, the use of natural L.A. light, the lush colors, the flashy camerawork… no matter where you stand on La La Land, it’s hard to deny that it’s a visual masterpiece.
Best Foreign Language Film Still haven’t gotten to Farhadi’s The Salesman but I’ve seen the others. This has been a strange year for this category. Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden was ineligible because it wasn’t Korea’s official selection. Someone should probably be arrested for this. And Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, a dark, intriguing film that earned Isabelle Huppert a nomination for Best Actress, somehow didn’t even make the final cut of potential nominees. Senseless.
Land of Mine, a penetrating Danish film set just after the conclusion of World War II, was one of my favorites of the year. I was glad to see it get nominated. I also loved A Man Called Ove. But this looks like a race between The Salesman and Toni Erdmann, the bizarre, 162-minute German comedy. Farhadi, an Iranian, will not attend the ceremony, in protest of Trump. Politics will almost certainly factor in here.
That’s about it. I loved the Jackie and Moonlight scores but yes, La La Land, okay. City of Stars, best song, fine with me. Months later and I’m still humming that shit.
Oh, also, OJ: Made in America was amazing but that is a miniseries, not a movie, and I’m glad to fight with anyone over this. It’s nearly eight hours long and it was shown on TV in five installments. Stop calling it a movie.
Enjoy the show.
