well... what a year. i should write about it on my neocities before i have to fly out. remember neocities? i sure didn't for a solid six months. hey, html is hard, what can i say? that aside, i'd like to thank everyone for the support this year. my blog grew quite a lot because i was drawing quite a bit of subway boss stuff and apparently that was a good idea. like, dude... i've just been having a prolonged brainrot episode and it's still probably going to keep going for a good long while. even larry hasn't distracted me long enough to not draw ingo and emmet for one day. even without submas art i would probably still be drawing pokemon stuff, unless i decide to be real bold and re-experience my great ace attorney phase (yes i had one (no i didn't post about it. thank god)) or something like that. regardless of whether my interests shift of my activity rises or falls, and whether those who follow me now stick around or move on, i'd still like to express my gratitude for your support. and not just to people following me, but to the people liking and/or reblogging my content and to those who will follow me in the future. without the feedback, i figure i would not be posting so much. funny little notification on funny little computer make the smooth little brain become happier brain, which is a "i want to draw" brain. the amount of notes doesn't matter overall, but it's nice to be acknowledged. i still do a lot of drawing that isn't shared here because it's just stuff i do for me, but its still pretty nice to be able to make stuff that is suitable to post and to see it actually get attention.

as for the plan next year, there might be some big changes in store for me yet. and i would still like to continue to draw subway bosses. but maybe i'll start posting some original content too (like i mean i have a tag for it and i kinda haven't been using it sooooooooooooo) and more frequent posts would be nice. maybe not once a week but just here and there. perhaps i'll share more sketches. i would like to acquaint everyone with my ocs, and maybe get around to rewriting their toyhouse pages which i took down to work on and never did WHOOPSIE DOODLES

not to talk abt video games on this blog, esp tl*u2 (🤢🤮🤮), but i keep thinking abt how i compared wha to tl*u2 and its so weird. i dont know what to call it when that happens. i jokingly referred to it as cop propaganda in wha, but what is the thing where u try to justify/excuse (?) one thing, by bringing up an irrelevant thing...

in tl*u2, u meet the character abby, the fantasy post apocalyptic idf soldier bc neil druckmann is a weirdo, who brutally ambushes, and murders the father of the game's protag after he saves her. she did this because in the past he killed her dad, and he did this bc he wanted to kill his daughter (the protag), all those reasons and shit aside, the player most likely does not like abby because that is her introduction. she never changes her mind abt it, feels bad, sees any other side, etc., whatever. she is the immediate antagonist, and the player rightfully dislikes her like the protagonist does. the game then forces you to play abby; you get scenes like her playing catch with her police dog (who mercilessly attacks the protag/player), she is seen saving a zebra out of nowhere (paralleling to a past action the protag also did), she bonds with a kid (paralleling the father-daughter relationship of the original protag), and her scene w her dad dying is supposed to be sad (paralleling the protag's dad she kills).

in wha, the witch cops, whose names i cant even remember atm, fucking hate our 10 y/o protag. they want to apprehend her and wipe her mind because she used magic unlawfully to try and help some people, and she herself wasn't even originally a witch, which they think should be something people are born with. im being vague bc i haven't read it in a while, but the point is they've remembered this and highly suspect her of being ~evil~. the reader most likely doesnt like them, bc they're so callous towards a child who had no bad intentions. then u get this chapter with some of the witch cop's povs and the one has a bf (wow gay people!!), then they're shown being shunned by normal people (oh no, no one wants to speak to them...), then the one cop lady has a flashback of being saved by the group after she was sexually assaulted and blamed (obviously a bad thing), there might be more things beyond that chapter, but i cant remember lol.

anyways my point is both piece of media repeatedly bring up completely unrelated things in an attempt to change the viewer's opinion on the character you initially had strong feelings for either by trying to make u like them or pity them. its not bad to change your mind, but these ways feel so inorganic, like the creator has a gun to your head like "do you feel bad now..! see how sad that was? how cute that scene was?!?!" when something like playing catch with a dog who previously tried to maul the previous protag doesn't exactly make me feel better about it, or the one cop being gay has nothing to do w him kinda turning a blind eye to his coworkers aggressive behavior towards a minor. an organic way to change an audience member's mindset should be through things like the character actually changing their behavior, directly to the bad thing they did in the past. for example, if the mean attack dog was revealed to have been shown in a cage, mistreated by the soldiers, forced to fight, i might think "well, i guess, its not the dog's fault, its the horrible owners.", but i still wouldn't be like "oh i killed someone's puppy :(". when u play fetch w it as the other pov, i'm like 'hey, this is that asshole dog who hurt my character, fuck this dog." lol... im not gonna be like uwu doggo cute or whatever. and same w the witch cop characters... like ok, cool backstory, but u were still shit to the literal child, what does you being a victim of sa have to do with anything...

idk, like i finished watching extraordinary attorney woo recently, and there's a character who felt threatened by the autistic protag regarded as a genius, so mr tactician spends half the series trying to sabotage her, but he does eventually back down. he stops (one thing), then even sides with her and tries to connect (even more!). it's a good start to a "redemption arc" and changing the characters and viewer's mind abt him. he even had some "oh my family is sick, im just average, she's a genius", but the series doesn't use that as his excuse to treat the protag like shit. he goes beyond just stopping his behavior, and he can do more and actually address it w her and all that. that's a good way to change the watcher's mind.

either the character's actions change, or there is more information revealed, which i think is harder to successfully pull off. tl*u2/wha could count as that, but they weren't successful bc those other facts didn't relate to the action that got the character disliked. i can't really think of too many works that do it well, but ousama ranking when it didn't get weird last second was very good at it. the later chapters of trigun had vash in an argument w knives saying he's too quick to judge, and he doesn't know the whole truth, which i disagreed w vash's specific example used, bc imo that also didn't excuse them (if i even understood it right, i reread it over and over and never really was convinced/understood it or why it works as that, lol), but it can work when it is actually done right.

these two examples i've compared, the characters are associated with the military/police in some way, so it'd still kinda feel like propaganda, but it would've been so much easier for it to be some sort of misunderstanding first, then they try to make up for it, then i might want to give them a break or another chance, instead of seeing one is gay and ignoring what they did before lol. esp w their position, they have a "attack first, ask questions never" attitude which inherently is part of the problem. the one gay cop kisses his bf and marches off to assault this newly awakened fucking dead dude who is missing his orphan, disabled son. i don't feel bad for the cops in this situation, lol!

#personal #this is very long and is nothing. sorry FJHDFS #but yeah idk if i can call it bad writing or what #and like its kinda debatable on what it is but how the character who did the bad thing feels abt it could help lol #like if the one guy went 'wait maybe that was bad... maybe i shouldnt do that again. i'll go apologize.' that is something #instead the guy keeps glaring daggers at a kid and im supposed to like him bc he helped his cop friend?? i dont think soo #also i forgot to say but the moment thatd make the viewer dislike the character couldve been shown to be a one off moment #they dont normally do this/theyve never done it before/etc #but as i said it depends on like what the action is lol #anywayss

scrolling my old art made me a bit sad and nostalgic (who doesnt get those feelings though doing the same) specifically i really have my heart going out to kid me who got basically no notes on anything. (im not saying i shouldve, art was definitely kid art and questionably tagged etc!) but some i put effort into and it made me so happy to get those 10 likes or whatever. it made me post post and post even what i was working on and unfinished bits (Sure, being me? many of those never got finished bc posting gave the hit of reward chemicals, no response meant no motivation to finish to get more yknow?)

its weird thinking ive now as an adult got a handful of posts with -hundreds- of notes. one over a thousand!! (sure, the really good and popular artists may have thousands but hey they deserve it!!) its weird that i sort of maybe now know what to do to get a reaction out of my prefered niche of the internet. that if i tried w some more consistently, who knows?

im proud of everything in my current art tag. (mostly. no. i am proud shut up brain) i feel slightly like posting more wips. bc i have a ton. surprisingly? ive been drawing way more in the past year than ive been posting (new for me). of course, there is no obligation to post it. why post stuff im not happy with? only to get anxious abt it? sure posting that one teaser when i was actively working on making it better was kinda fun. sure maybe posting some wips would make me go back and finish them bc some of them are good ideas?? but also some are just. theyd make sense to nobody but myself. and why should i share every crevice of my creativity like i used to as an attention craving kid?

ive got like 12 frames of the inktober challenge from last year... in the style of posting 5 at a time, theyve all been sketched out and like half are i think finished. obviously october went long and at some point it just felt weird to post them even if i finished them. i sort of decided if i finish them up early autumn i could get away w posting them for beginning of october while i had a try at the new inktober? idk why i like a challenge to force me to draw more than i do in a year. and then it takes me a year lol. i have a set of 5 that are all inspired by fic, and like. i still like the idea of them. unfortunately? some of the references were old..  A YEAR AGO. sure theres like, the appreciation for vintage and telling ppl we like their work ages on. but i worry the authors no longer are in the fandom or want to be reminded of their work? etc etc. some of them are meh, some i like.

2021 Harry Potter Fanfic Primer

im here to point fingers at the incredible authors that have enabled my new interest in HP content.  im still conflicted and upset about it, tbh, but for now we’re leaning into the curve.  we’re getting out our shovel and finding out just how deep we can make the hole we’re in.  hand in unlovable hand my beloved <3.  anyway, these fics are wonderful, their authors are wonderful, and you should go read their stuff. if there’s a star next to it that means im losing my mind over it and always will be.

A very excellent re-telling of harry’s first year at hogwarts if he were sorted into Slytherin, plus some more not!fic or piecemeal re-tellings of his second and part of his third year.  Harry, in this, has a slightly different trauma response to growing up with the Dursley’s.  He’s a bit quieter, and the signs are a bit more obvious to the people around him, and I enjoyed that immensely. 

Honestly, if you’re going to get sucked into something you have absolutely no business getting sucked into, elumish is the way to go, their fic is incredible. their teen wolf fic is also immaculate, if you’re so inclined.

In progress (like, updated last week in progress).  Currently in the beginning of Harry’s first year.  Fem!Harry, Indian!Harry.  Hagrid puts Harry in touch with Remus when she has questions about her parents, and they become reluctant, traumatized, angst-ridden pen pals who keep missing each other’s true intentions like ships in the night.  hot DAMN do I love this fic.  there’s hints of the way the dursley’s treat Harry peaking through in her letters, and I appreciated the attention to “hmm, her experience as a girl of indian descent in britain under the thumb of a bunch of white people who like being Normal may not have been gucci”

Definitely comb through the rest of their HP fic, too, I may or may not have gone feral over it.

Woof.  This one said, “hey, harry was probably SUPER depressed in the summer after fifth year.  like, clinically.  maybe someone should do something about that.”  Fuck yeah.  Then this one said, “that someone was Snape.”  You all know my opinions on Snape; generally, Bad.  But damn if this fic didn’t wholly convince me by the end of it.  I thought it was a very realistic way for Snape to start seeing Harry as a person all on his own, and not a proxy for Snape’s angst over James and Lily, respectively.  The angst is wonderful, the ending is even more so.

*bernie sanders voice* I am once again asking you to read through the rest of the author’s HP fic.  a lot of them have similar themes; there’s actually a great one with Molly that i’m not reccing here, Wonder.

WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU HOW MUCH I ENJOYED/AM ENJOYING THIS.  If I had to pick a single fic and say “you, it’s your fault I’m stuck here,” it would be this one.  Anyway Lily in the afterlife is So Very Angry about how Petunia is treating Harry, and how Sirius is rotting in Azkaban, and how Remus is alone, that she literally brings herself back to life and drags James and Regulus with her.  All three of them are there to chew bubblegum and fix everything that went wrong after they died—and would you look at that, they’re all out of bubblegum!  There’s only Fury left.  That inciting premise is very crack, but every moment after that is very much not crack.  Lily and James love harry more than anything, the way a child should be loved; James and Sirius have the epic friendship of a lifetime; Sirius and Remus have staggering amounts of resolved sexual tension and take turns keeping each other in check; Regulus, though he realized that Voldemort and his family were shit before he died, is still unlearning all his racist bullshit and, also, years of trauma.  Actually, they’re all traumatized, but hey: now they have one another again and not a damn one of them seems inclined to let go anytime soon.  Quietlemonhush went, “hey, HP has a lot of Awful people in it, and a lot of Righteous people in it, and many of them are Very, Very Powerful; also, love is the most powerful force in the universe” and i said “hell yes tell me more right now.”  And then they did!

Quietlemonhush writes Sirius/Remus in a way that makes it sooo much fun to devour, so the rest of their HP fic is most certainly worth a look, if that’s your thing.

Hermione/Draco (*shrug emojis into the abyss* yeah, yeah, like none of us have ever been there before).  Takes place during Hogwarts 8th year, and while the beginning is, IMO, a little unfair to Ron, it gets much better.  Tells the story of Hermione and Draco clearing the air, learning to like each other, having some hormones over each other, and then falling in love.  Also tells the story of Hermione and Theo Nott becoming friends; the story of how every single 7th and 8th year student is fucked to hell by the war and the Carrows; the story of how they start an emotional support group about it and all become friends; and the story of, what the hell do you do with yourself after that kind of trauma?

I’ve been dipping in and out of Colubrina’s HP since before I was even on tumblr; I actually found them in those dark yesteryears when the only fandom interactions I had were on fanfiction.net.  Of such fame as Green Girl, which is an HP fic staple, and has also written a lot of wackier, crackier, and darker things than that.  If you don’t take yourself too seriously, I highly recommend many of their big HP works, though I imagine it’ll press some people’s buttons.  Colubrina’s work really does take up a corner of my mind whenever I’m in an HP mood, and will take up yours if you let it.

This is so well written that I can’t stop thinking about it.  It is occupying my mind when I lie awake at night, you know?  It’s one of those.  Hermione messes with something she probably shouldn’t have in Grimmauld Place, so when Sirius is sent through the Veil in the Department of Mysteries, she gets thrust into an alternate universe...in 1975.  Instead of handwaving it away, shuofthewind actually gets into the mechanics of it in a way that makes sense, to emphasize that hermione is never going home.  ever. The world she finds herself is shifted slightly to the left, quite a bit darker, but in a “the author is treating the idea of a society-wide conflict over blood purity much more seriously than JKR ever did” way, not a sensationalist way.  Now, Hermione has to grapple with all her grief at losing everyone she’s ever loved or known, the moral/ethical/magical implications of sharing what she knows about her future in an alternate world, and, you know, a goddamn war with people who want to murder her for being who she is.  This Hermione is smart, and she’s kind, and she’s powerful, and she’s making real friends.  If you hate JKR’s guts I’d go read this right now, because it delivers in all the ways she failed us.  It’s plotty, its got great world-building, and it pulls back the white curtain on the wizarding world to show you that, like real life, it’s multicultural and full of queer people...and the discrimination that comes with both.

shuofthewind write epics, mainly for the MCU, and I’ve read some of them a looooong time ago, so this fic kinda seemed out of left field for me but im SOOOO GLAD it exists.  If you want MCU fic you can sink your teeth into, go for it, but alas, they do not have any more HP fic (.......yet?)

Harry reaches out to Remus for support because Umbridge is getting to him with her literal torture.  Remus, being a former professor, former mandatory reporter, person who loves Harry and has since he was born, and all around good man, tells Harry he has to tell someone, or Remus will.  It’s everything any adult looking back on that time in HP canon ever wanted, which is for an actual adult to say “what the fuck, those are literal chidlren” and then do something about it.  Then, a far more dangerous task: Harry trusts Remus enough to go to him about the Dursleys.  Harry and Remus’ relationship develops SO WELL, and there’s a bit of exploration about how Sirius may not exactly be guardian material, because he did in fact spend 12 years of his life getting tortured instead of growing up.  I think I’m actually going to go reread this right now, because it speaks to my id.

they do have some other HP fic which did not appeal to my hyperspecific wants, but may appeal to some of yours.  I think they’re also a published author, there should be a link on their profile page.

When Harry is five years old, a picture of him ends up in the Daily Prophet, and Sirius Black, Terror of Ministry Officials Touring Azkaban everywhere, gets a hold of that issue.  He then, in order: breaks out of Azkaban; crosses the countryside to Surrey; Finds Harry: Kidnaps Harry; Breaks Into Remus’ Apartment; starts processing (or maybe just acknowledging) his trauma from Azkaban, the war, and his childhood; and pines after Remus.  It’s a little plotty, and deals a lot (sometimes through flashbacks) with the specific awful things that happened to Sirius—largely because, after years in the constant presence of Dementors, those are nearly literally the only memories he has left.  It’s a wonder he’s got the strength to love Harry and Remus at all.  But then, maybe it isn’t.

This is a Very Serious Fic, but the rest of Duskglass’s HP work is actually just cracky enough to tickle your funny-bone, while still making you think “okay but why couldn’t we have done that in the first place.”

So!  That’s it for recs, for now.  These are all things I’ve found and read in the last month; if any of y’all are interested in my old HP recs, let me know and I can make a post for that, too.  While I’m still very conflicted about my choice of current fandom, I am not in ANY way conflicted about my taste in fic and authors.  Send these guys some love, read their fic if you’re so inclined, and leave some nice comments at the end of it.

and about the clone theory— i unfortunately dont like it very much, at least for my own ideas and content (not hate it or want ppl who hc to stop tho, thats just mean, this is just personal taste & people who hc it are cool). its not a personal jab to anyone whos main headcanon is that, because of course anyone can headcanon anything (glad u guys are having fun w it!). its just that i myself personally dont vibe with it much.

(gonna explain why i personally dont like the hc for my own content here but please dont take it as me saying it sucks, this is just personal tastes when it comes to interpreting story things): the reason i dont like to adopt this headcanon for myself is mostly bc i feel like its denying of what tord became as a character. from what ive seen, its been used a lot as a way to say that “hey tord didnt actually become evil suddenly, silly legacy team!!!! im gonna explain this random evilness by saying that that is an evil tord clone from spares” (most ppl say it in a lighthearted way is fine & actually p silly). it isnt bad to think of reasonings why tord suddenly became this way since i do it with my own RL headcanons too, i just like to headcanon these types of shifts in personality as a kind of Character Growth instead of resorting to an outside source/excuse(?) for him to suddenly becoming evil like making the evil tord a clone.

i understand why people feel more comfortable in letting the og tord be his own self instead of suddenly becoming bastardized within a single episode after years of not appearing, though. i get it— i was a fan since classic so the change took me by surprise as well. i just personally enjoy thibking about what couldve made tord change for the worst. its particularly fun for me especially considering there was a big hint of it back in Christmas Special 2005 (i was actually gonna write a post abt this some time.. also dont take this as me saying smth like ‘lol my hc has proof while urs doesnt!!’ in the end it doesnt matter if theres proof of a hc or not, its all for fun, just saying that making these connections makes it fun for me)

I lost a fic, its at least 5K probably leaning twords 20 though. It involves Merlin getting sick, I think pneumonia. I remember that at one point Morgana reads him a book when he's sick, and Arthur almost leaves to get Hunith because he thought Merlin wouldn't make it. May have something to do with a formalwear tunic that made him cold and got sick, but that might be a different one. I also think he was going to go to a party of Gwen's before he got sick?? sorry if this is kinda vague

Hi I’ve been looking everywhere for one particular fic. It’s pretty dark and modern au. Merlin is immortal, has lost his memories, not thinking clearly, and is suicidal. Arthur is reincarnated and has the urge to kill. They somehow? come to an arrangement, and Arthur “consensually” kills Merlin, and then is filled with regret. But it kind of “resets” Merlin so when he comes back his memories are restored and he’s ok again? Any ideas??
