As it turns out he was hurt from a fight against some outlaws, so feeling bad at the sight of him trying to treat himself with one arm, you decided to help him out

Your kind gesture touched his heart which led to him frequently visiting you everytime he comes back from a dangerous trip

Just imagine you're outside sweeping the front porch and then you hear him call out your name which you look up to see him waving at you with a toothy smile

It was almost like he considered you his personal nurse as you're the one he always goes to when he's hurt anywhere

When talking to him, you found his behaviour strange since he always talked to you in a rhythmic way, but you also found it amusing

It didn't take long for Rhys to start developing feelings for you since he was very much attracted to you and enjoyed spending every second he could with you

Once he was sure he had a crush, he would start to get you pretty things he found when he's out exploring.

"Look! I got you this! 😊" He'd say with his hand holding out a beautiful yellow flower.

Loves it soso much when you thank him but if you're awkward with receiving gifts, a simple smile is enough to send him over the moon

Would definitely introduce you to his bird mount, 'Plumecharger' who took a while to finally warm up to you

Will also let you feed his bird, his hand would be guiding yours towards the beak very slowly to get them to trust you more, but secretly he was liking the feel of your hand in his

If we're talking about flirting, this man has no idea how to, his vocabulary is already struggling itself so his only way of showing love would be lots of gift gifting and spending quality time together

He had given you so much gifts that you needed to install another shelf to store them

Your personal favourite would be a flower crown he had tried to make himself, the work was a bit sloppy as some of the flower stems were poking out or been worn out from his constant struggle to tie it together. But hey, it's the thought that matters!

I'd like to think that this man would go around asking his friends how to make the first move which resulted in him getting mixed ideas

"You just gotta brag about how much of a man you are! It worked for me!"

Cue him bragging about his criminal stint with the Quicksand Claw that you had to listen with an awkward look, because from what you heard from the other villagers, he was just there to feed the birds

After his epic failure of trying to have you fall for him, you laughed at his poor attempts and ended up being the one to confess, which had him so overjoyed he was actually jumping on his feet

While dating Rhys, he would always follow you around the village when he's not busy with his line of work

Lots of the villagers found it cute how he was always trailing behind you like a poodle. If you're buying groceries for dinner, he's willing to help you hold the basket to show you how much of a big boy he is 😼

He likes it especially when you're both cuddled together with Plumecharger laid down for you guys to rest your heads on, that's when you'll see him at his most vulnerable

Though, he's very ticklish so if you poke him on the side he'll laugh and start a tickling war

Considering how fluffy his hair is and how he doesn't really know how to take care of it, you'll have to be the one to teach him

He melts whenever you braid some strands of his hair together, so everytime he's out on another trip, he'll run his fingers across the braids thinking about you

Now onto kisses

This man will admit to you with no shame that he has no idea how to kiss, since he never thought he would actually find someone who loves him :(

Once you teach him how to kiss, it's over for you.

Honestly, his pet names would contain just the simpler ones like baby, honey and his personal favourite, babe.

This man cares about you a lot so if you get sick or hurt, he'll drop everything he's doing just to take care of you.

"Rhys where are you going?! We have work to do!"

"Sorry! It's an emergency!" He shouts while running away from his friends.

Doesn't care if you say you're capable of taking care of yourself, he just wants to always be there for you

If you're up for it, he's willing to teach you how to ride Plumecharger, of course he'll be close-by and ready to catch you if you get knocked off or anything.

He's honestly very insecure about his laugh when around you because he's scared you'll stop loving him for it so you'll have to assure him that you love his laugh very much 🥺

If you happen to be insecure on anything about yourself, he'll shower you with even more love, he really doesn't care about your imperfections, he finds you being human more perfect than anything

Dating Rhys also includes lots of dates where you guys are either out stargazing, shopping at the market or doing self care routines together, which is his favourite.

I'd also like to add that this man is SUCH A TEASE!!!!

He likes to make you pout or beg for something so he'll be one of those people who put your things high up or hidden somewhere in the house to have you ask him for help

"Did I hear a please?" He'd said with a smug everytime.

If you get frustrated and just decide to ignore him, he'll follow you around like a fly that won't go away.

Hey so uhh. If you live in the US, your local library probably needs a lot of help. Some ways to show up for public and school libraries and librarians right now:

-Show up to library board meetings and school board meetings and say you're in favor of freedom to read. If you can't show up to the meetings, write letters and make phone calls. Bonus points if you're a parent and say you want to defend your right to decide what your child is allowed to read.

-Keep track of local and state news regarding libraries around you and inform the appropriate elected officials of your stance in favor of freedom to read. Here, phone calls are best, but emails and letters are also ok. The Literary Activism newsletter from BookRiot is my favorite roundup of censorship and library news around the US.

-Call your federal Congressional representative and tell them to support the Fight Book Bans Act.

-VOTE in local elections and look out for dog whistles like "parental choice" and "protecting children's innocence" in candidate platforms.

-VOTE Democrat in state and national level elections so we don't have to deal with these people (direct quotes from the article above):

You know what? I’m not done. I’m not done.

The following is not an apologist post, before that little thought pops up, it is, instead, meant to give some perspectives. You can agree, you can not agree, I care not.

“Sephiroth is a war criminal because he killed people in a war.” No. No, that’s not how that works. People are killed in war. That’s how that works. “Yeah, but like.. He did it really goodly and killed lots--” Doesn’t matter. “But the people he was killing were just trying to defend--” Yeah, that happens a lot in war. Now, if he, say, gathered a group of civilian Wutaians into a trench and ordered his men to shoot every single one of them while they screamed and tried to claw their way out of said trench, NOW we’re dealing with some war crimes. But we have no evidence he did that. And, yes, I am referencing an actual thing military has done in real life.

Now, I don’t like war. I’d like to think most people don’t like war. I especially don’t like wars fought over dumb ass shit like, “We want to use the land you’re on for resources and you won’t let us, soooo... :)” But, hey, that’s history for you. Whether it was thousands of years ago or right the fuck now. But you can’t just go throwing the term ‘war criminal’ around when it’s not fucking applicable. You can comprehend the horrors of war and acknowledge the situation is fucked up without using the phrase ‘war criminal.’ To me, going, “Zack was a war criminal because he followed orders and took out enemy combatants in an enemy Fort, which is an accepted target for war,” is honestly dulling the accepted amount of violence for regular ass war. That shit is allowed. That isn’t a crime.

“Sephiroth torched Cloud’s hometown. That is unforgivable.” Yeah. Yeah, that was a crime. It wasn’t a war crime because he didn’t do it for war reasons, he just did a regular ass crime. And there’s no excusing it. Even if you wanted to go the ~crime of passion~ route, like... Mmm, no. Anyway, I bring this part up because... Most people see this act of violence for what it is and appropriately respond with horror, disgust, rage at the injustice of it. “WHY would you do that?!” Even when you can see the why of it, you’re still--generally--like, “Bruh. Too far.”

What people don’t often do is look at the shit Avalanche pulls and react in kind.

“Yeah, but they’re the good guys.” I do not care. They are terrorists. And I don’t care that Remake tried to shift blame for the reactor explosions from Avalanche proper onto Shinra by going, “Well, technically, Shinra pushed the final button, so--” ORIGINALLY, Avalanche blew the fuck up two whole reactors, which damaged a substantial chunk of the city around each reactor, and killed people. People in the nearby sectors, asleep in their beds or walking along the streets, fucking died. And Avalanche was okay with that. They were so okay with that they were going to do it all the other times needed to stop Midgar for good. “Yeah, but the Planet--” DON’T CARE.

Your heroes, same as the villain, are a-okay with taking some lives to get what they want. To me, there is no moral high ground here. Now, as the game goes on, methods change and character growth happens and some guilt starts to set in a little bit, but... Don’t say Sephiroth is evil because he killed innocent people, and that’s it, and then just let Avalanche’s sins float under the radar because, “Well, they’re the good guys, so.”

If I do not require fans of the heroes to preface any show of love they have for them with, “I know they killed people, but--” Then I should also not be required to say, “I know Sephiroth/the Remnants/the Turks killed people, but--”

Love the characters you love. Hate the characters you hate. Do not assume someone’s morality or worth based on which character they like or don’t like. And, for the love of god, stop throwing around phrases like ‘war criminal’ and worse to justify to somebody else why you don’t like a character. You can just not like the damn character without diluting the meaning of words!

hey gang! haven't posted in a while. so let's talk about the boiled one phenomenon/TOE, that webseries with the character that made me unable to sleep correctly for a few days.

okay, so, i do believe that uh. thing with the hands. his name's locust. i'm not very sure how he ties into the story, but i do know a few things. when he gets a victim, he hollows them out- making it look as though nothing happened- and takes their heart (or, in the title, a "love thumper"). i'm not very sure how TOE (the organate enterprises) fits into it, but based on what i'm seeing, it seems to be the company behind the nature broadcast, the ad for the star candies, and whatever showed up after the ad for the star candies. do i know what this means? of course not

okay here's the part that i'm definitely sure of. there's lots of references to the bible, and locusts. i'm not christian, or even that interested in the bible, so if anyone wants to correct me here, do it. however, the locusts in the bible eat everything they come across. also, locust is mentioned in revelations (which i will talk about in a minute)

the boiled one's introduction has heavy, HEAVY references to the bible. mostly, i saw the sky opening up and the trumpets in the ears of the victims as VERY biblical sounding. however, when zamperini's (his name is likely a reference to watanabe matsuhiro, who was in the japanese military and a known war criminal) laying in the bed while being interviewed, we see the sign about jesus turn into "i can see you" above him. we can also see the uh. hair? spikes? whatever? of the boiled one in the window. personally, i see it as very similar to how god watches over people- all-seeing, all-knowing, etc etc. plus, most of the events in the fetal fanfare part (sky opening, trumpets) tie directly to revelations. plus, the "tree of heaven" part ties to it as well... but i don't know about a tree of heaven. maybe it may tie to the garden of eden? but i'm unsure. anyways, time to focus on zamperini, the war vet.

job zamperini, while being a reference to the events of prisoners of war in japan, also references job's suffering in the bible. again, not a christian, but job's story involves god taking everything from him. plus, the ephrata branch (according to comments under emortalmarcus's video) is named after a town in pennsylvania. ephrata, while being a town in PA (which may tie to why it wasn't placed in zamperini's original hometown) sounds similar to efrata/efrat, which is an israeli settlement, believed to be the original location of bethlehem- more ties to religion and christ.

overall, i personally believe it's leading to a focus on zamperini and watanabe. zamperini turned to christ to deal with the pain and suffering he endured while a prisoner of war, and watanabe died in 2003. i do believe the boiled one is watanabe's ghost coming back and using biblical imagery, themes, and events to torment him further. however, i'm not very sure how my boy locust ties into this (and i haven't even SPOKEN about that creature that follows you after the lights turn off) or how TOE ties into that and all. overall, i need me some more lore to figure out if doctor nowhere is focusing completely on zamparini's story, or if he's using it as a symbol of war (like one of the comments on the original series said)

overall 10/10 series i saw the boiled one on a thumbnail of a video and genuinely shat myself

DAY 5: JANUARY 31, 2024 (i got to start reading more consistently.)

STATS: read for ~3 hrs pages read: 1052-1359. 307 pgs. act 4! slur count: 8 + 1 = 9 (john r slur on 1 of his defaced posters) silly count: 11 + 0 = 11 (i might have missed some. to be honest) piss count: 1/3

THOUGHTS: today started with john's alchemizing spree! i really like the alchemy even though i can NOT understand how the binary and codes quite work. john does though. johns really smart about alchemy in sburb specifically. this section also has a lot of funny john faces. i love this guy

FINALLY the end of dave and bros strife! jesus! been 2 sessions sicne it started! i said this last time but i think its SO INTERESTING how bro doesnt cut or stab dave in any way during the strife. they clash and lil cal gets torn up and daves sword gets 1/2ed and daves SYMBOL gets scratched but when hussie shows dave after the fight hes winded and bruised and battered but hes NOTABLY NOT BLOODY! obviously being bruised cus youre FIGHTING! WITH YOUR DAD! is bad and your dad (bro) is a criminal but. man. how much restraint was bro USING. to be SO PRECISE! did he have to choose between slashing dave and slashing cal in that split second? why else would he possibly have slashed cal? for paradox reasons? i really like dirk strider

the unofficial homestuck collection website is bugging out SO BAD for me. for so many flashes today the music just did not play. it SUCKS! but its fine i just play the music in another tab. i hope they fix that but i know its not priority

i really like the few dave logs i read today. dave is sooooo sad puppy on the other side of a cracked door that sees you and wants to get in the room but cant figure out how to push open the door so he just whines. "hello" "what are you doing" "man where are you" "are you there" he is so cute. in contrast the other dave log today was DAVE AND TAVROS!!!! HOORAY FOR TAVROS! and dave in this one is really funny hes so nonchalant and like "no man. if you want to have sex with a 13 yr old boy okay dude. im on board. time and place." and tavros is like UM! NO! IM GOOD! HAHA! }:) ! they are so funny. the striders are SO internet troll. dave does it flawlessly

KANAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE KANAYA! SHES MY FAVORITE TROLL! shes so awesome in the kanaya/rose log she is so funny. start talking to this girl like "humans cant understand time travel when its really so simple youre all kind of dumb" and ending with "hey we should be friends". i literally love her

EXILES! not much happened with the exiles. introduced to aimless renegade. what a cop. pa harley heart! thanks for your guns pa!

THE FLASH WHEN ROSE ENTERS THE GAME IS SO COOOOOL!!!!!!!!! i really really like it unfortunately the sound didnt work so all the beats didnt hit quite right but they hit ENOUGH. SO COOL! I LOVE ROSE!!!! theres so much going on all the time for that girl. i love you rose

INTERMISSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really like the intermission i think its so fun trying to parse what the hell is happening. i have GOT to read problem sleuth because so many of the things i find funny are straight up just problem sleuth bits

hussie averting the readers expectations with the like You have a deck of cards. ==> play solitaire With what cards? Dumbass? Fuck off. You only have your WAR CHEST. i think this is hussie like softdropping his rivalry with his audience. it starts with silly banter and then hes like im going to make a character representing the fandom and im going to kill her off (calliope)

the felt are SO COOL! if anyone knows all the pun names for them lmk. i only know a few obvious ones.

the intermission is SO gory. theres so much blood and death and guns and knives. like ok dude i get youre in mafia gangs or whatever but cool it on the blood and yucky faces! yeesh! there is also more crude jokes in it than normal i think. maybe cus these are real adults with pornography in their briefcases than like 13 yr olds. "jack king off" "you beat it(your heart) pretty often" "fist full of penis" etc

you kjnow what drives me crazy. the ACTUAL REAL TIMELINE of the intermission. or at least what it means for the rest of the comic. obviously the intermission is foreshadowing (esp when slick gets his eye and arm cut off; mentioning lord english; etc) but like. its MORE. when i first read homestuck i was under the impression that the intermission was just some other timeline in some universe. granted i dont remember slicks eye and arm getting nixed or karkat vantas reveal or lord english mention or anything that foreshadows anything. but NO! its NOT some other timeline! but it IS another universe. its ALTERNIA!!!!!!!!!!!

the story of jack noir (spades slick) as i know it is as follows: jack noir spawns in derse ==> commits a crime (probably shittalking the queen) ==> gets exiled to... um. somewhere. ==> i assume he meets karkat here? and stabs him. and karkats blood is revealed and then theyre friends ==> slick (now scurrilous straggler) is left on the green moon? exiled in rags ==> he builds a city ==> the felt's mansion is there also. they form gangs and become rivals ==> intermission starts; midnight crew infiltrates lord english's lair to get the vault prizes ==> slick goes in the vault and begins commanding karkat. if im wrong about any of this correct me im so curious

i really like clubs deuce and diamonds droog. i wish crowbar was in the intermission more. clover is just like nagito komaeda. trace and fin are insaaaane. i wish i knew more about the felt

ACT 4! GAME!!!!! game on lowas. its really cool i didnt get to play it my first readthrough. love the salamanders and love the captchalogue nonsense. it is so fun. thats all for today folks

Currently realizing how very much Weird it is that multiple Very Big Companies have put out stories where the heroes are fighting (or people related to the heroes previously fought) what is essentially a slave rebellion.

Like. How do you get to that point? How did your story become that?

if you don't know what I'm talking about - Overwatch. Overwatch as an example, where much of the plot is now revolving around the Omnic Crisis that was in essence a robot slave rebellion. Yes, the lore's walked back from this and danced around it a lot and complicated the whole mess but - like this is just an example. walk through this with me and I'll show you why it's so weird.

you're lead writer for a new IP, it's a team shooter, fast-paced gameplay, colorful cast of characters in a 20-years-into-the-future setting. Major themes include heroism and hope and multiculturalism of some sort.

you decide sapient robots are going to be in this setting. you want to lightly dive into the moral dilemma of sapient robots that were created for menial labor and do they have rights and/or a soul,

you decide that in the past of this setting, there was an uprising as the robots realized they weren't free. this shook up most of the world, there was a massive war. this is recent history.

okay. decent worldbuilding. now, let's get back to the heroes. they're upstanding moral citizens. they protect and save people and give hope to the masses.

who are they fighting?

... FAIRLY SURE YOU DID NOT SAY "the robots, right?"

RIGHT?

SO THEN HOW DID ANYONE AT BLIZZARD HQ COME TO THE IDEA THAT THE ANTAGONISTS SHOULD BE THE ROBOTS?

DO YOU SEE WHY THIS IS SO WEIRD? LIKE HOW DID THAT ENTER THEIR HEAD. THESE BITCHES ARE FROM CALIFORNIA. LAST I CHECKED, SLAVERY APOLOGIA IS NOT THAT COMMON IN CALIFORNIA.

like even IF we incorporate the backtracking of but no these are the bad side of the uprising - how was that the first thing that came to mind. why not organized crime syndicate forcibly enslaving the robots. isn't that the more straightforward 'who are the antagonists' answer?

and hey - if you can explain (explain, not excuse) Overwatch, great. now why did Hogwarts Legacy. like let's ignore Rowling for a bit (but fuck her),

again, worldbuilding time, here's the magical hogwarts world. who are we fighting? can't do the wizard nazis, that might feel trite.

this world has all sort of opportunity for unscrupulous magical-flavored criminality and potential for corruption or it could just be a slice of life and you're a normal student-

goblin uprising.

WHY????? like even IF some dude super high up was a literal goddamn nazi, why did so many people not ask "wait - this is weird. why not just wizard mafia"

and this isn't even covering all the other situations where this exact thing happens that i can't remember right now, but like why does it keep happening what's going on why do people keep writing 'discrimination is wrong' storylines that also make the antagonist a member of a discriminated-against group. ????????????

I cannot rate this with a good conscience ❤

I have autism and Hetalia is my special interest so this is literally 3k words long and I have absolutely no regrets. I could have gone on longer but I wanted to remain relevant to the class. If you don't reply to me I will cry.

I'm gonna break this into a few sections so you can skip around. I'm going to try and stick to just season 1 with this discussion, which won't be too hard cause it's the most insane one. Also, I just want to say that I wrote this all before I read the attached article and I'm now seeing that I literally could have written that article because I know everything about Hetalia.

When do we cross the line between stereotyping and just straight-up racism?

Hey, why are we idolizing WWII Germany?

Oh, we are portraying war as silly and funny, okay cool.

Is this Japanese Nationalism? (a surprisingly controversial argument)

The Sub and the Dub are 2 totally different shows

The Fandom (and linking back to other class-related terms)

Okay I'll name one good thing

Alright, let's get started.

A lot of people will argue that Hetalia is not racist at all because they are making fun of everyone. If you are portraying all of the countries as their most common stereotypes then it evens out in the end. I would argue that this is in fact, not the case. Especially when you set your show during WWII. I will give Himaruya credit in that he mostly focuses on European countries to make fun of, making a lot of the stereotypes less so targeted at minorities. However, a lot of these jokes are still highly insensitive and frame some countries in a worse light than others

Just look at the difference between how Northern Italy is portrayed as opposed to Germany or Japan. Or how France is a predator, Belarus is into her literal brother, and Spain is seen as a creep. It is often times mocking an entire country's intelligence, appearance, or personality. While it is not always that serious, it does lead me to the second point.

When you personify a country and mock it, you aren't just mocking a piece of land, you are mocking an entire population of people. These jokes may seem harmless but they can still be hurtful. While I don't believe that liking Hetalia translates to your actual views on world events, it can unconsciously impact your real-life thoughts and behaviors.

(also why does Britain see imaginary magical creatures, what is that referencing? According to the wiki, it is some popular folklore story of a rabbit who lives on the moon but like.. what? If Himaruya was doing this much research into these countries' cultural backgrounds why is he portraying them like this?)

This show portrays WWII Germany in too positive of a light for my liking. I've noticed a trend in anime where they seem to love Germany (or Germanic aesthetics) a lot (AOT I'm looking at you). Now I'm not well-versed in the interpersonal relationships between Japan and Germany, but the idolization is not it. The way that Japan in this show is portrayed as being literally obsessed with Germany is the biggest example (Italy is also shown having an immense appreciation for Germany and is often gushing about his positive qualities, even writing him a song while he was being kept prisoner). But I mean look at how Germany is portrayed, even his stereotypes are mostly positive, he is hardworking but helps out his fellow allies, makes great food, and is super strong. His only negative trait is that he sometimes doesn't understand social scenarios and that makes him very awkward. However, he will always go out of his way to try and better understand his friends (like Italy) by purchasing books to try and help him learn the appropriate way to act in scenarios).

This is 10x worse in the dub but we will get there. When one of your main characters, the one you are portraying in the best light, is a literal war criminal hot anime boy, you can understand why I would be concerned. I mean they gave him the whole blonde hair blue eyed appearance like come on. Now I'm not going to go into depth on fandom or anything here but Hetalia knows that its demographic is young tweens (primarily girls) so how can you be surprised when this portrayal of Germany leads to WWII fanfics sympathizing with Germany and 14 y/o girls in German military uniforms doing questionable things. (also Germany becomes a canonically gay character in Hetalia in like season 4 or something and that just makes me so mad, like yeah, of course, the gay character is WWII Germany that so cool) (okay, I would like to clarify that technically Sweden is the only confirmed gay character. Sweden is bad representation though because he has one-sided feelings for Finland and makes him uncomfortable by constantly referring to him as his wife)

I mean yeah, obviously this isn't going to be an accurate portrayal of history but some of this is just totally misinformation.

Austria invading Germany is literally just Austria annoying him in his house for a really long time. But also there's like actual wars... and like all of the events of WWI are canon... and like there are some really serious episodes

Also, we literally see a bunch of countries going to war personally, like fighting on the frontlines. Which to me confirms that these people are all literal murderers, like mass murderers lowkey.

Do you know how many weird USSR jokes there are throughout this? So many. Lithuania is pretty much just in a running gag where he keeps getting manipulated by Russia into coming back to live with him. (Yeah, there are so many USSR fics as well).

ALSO! why is the American revolution portrayed as the saddest thing to happen thus far, the storyline is stretched out from episodes 16-20 and it is all drastically different from the tone of the rest of the show. Britain is literally on his knees crying saying that he can't shoot America (which also implies these countries can physically harm/kill each other). Like that is the war you wanted to make all sad and sentimental? Why? Is this how Japanese people think that we view the Revolutionary war? Because that is a pretty inaccurate view.

Anyways back to the original point. Some historical events should not be played for laughs sometimes. It is incredibly disrespectful for actual victims of these tragedies to portray these events as funny or goofy.

Though I will give credit because Himaruya does make all sides of the war look like idiots who have no clue what they are doing, which is a sentiment I can get behind.

As a both non-Japanese and non-Korean person I can not really give my opinion on this however I can share with you both sides of the argument. This is mostly in relation to the original comic strip, but has some relevance to the anime as well. I just wanted to bring it up because it is interesting to me. (This is briefly mentioned in the article but I wanted to expand on the argument).

You may or may not have noticed that there is no South Korea character in this show, however, there was in the original comic. In the comics, South Korea is a pervert who is constantly touching Japan and he also takes credit for the inventions of other countries. Now I'm obviously not going to go into the past history of these 2 countries because that would be incredibly long but the South Korean National Assembly reviewed Hetalia and determined that it was a "crime against South Koreans, akin to slander". So yeah, South Korean people were not happy with this portrayal and the character was inevitably removed from the anime before release. (This is a real picture of the South Korean National Assembly reviewed Hetalia, the corner shows South Korea groping Japan inappropriately)

There are two opposing views to the Japanese Nationalism take and I'll link them both (Belittling Japanese Nationalism Hetalia: Axis Powers is the title of the first one)

The first one pretty much argues that Hetalis is not Japanese nationalism because it paints Japan in just as negative of a light as all of the other countries, no one is left out of being made fun of. Japan is seen as socially awkward, emotionally repressed, and obsequious.

The second argues that Japan is often shown to be more intelligent than other characters as well as often being of the voice of reason (especially compared to China) and most of his negative attributes are not nearly as harmful as some others in Japan��s case, even his “negative” stereotypes are inoffensive, as they pose no threat of meiwaku.

I think we see in the dub that Americans are a little more willing to make fun of themselves. Though there are a few good Japan self digs, like the capitalism joke in one of the first episodes.

Oh boy I've been waiting for this.

The dub is 10x more offensive than the sub. Most people consider it a crack dub.

So many of the jokes are rewritten that it is practically a different show. The sub is from a Japanese perspective and the dub is from an American perspective.

First of all the accents in the dub are so bad like it is actually atrocious. Japan is really annoying because not only is his voice stereotypical but he always says 'nani?' instead of 'what?' as if that is a normal thing that people do. The narrator is the best part of the dub and she is hilarious.

So I don't really feel comfortable even typing out the jokes here so if you want to hear them I included the time stamps for the three nazi jokes I remember in season 1 (the last two being worse).

Episode 7 (2:13-2:19)

Episode 48 (1:28-1:31)

Those are just a few examples and it gets worse. The dub literally had no reason to include these jokes because there is not even an insinuation of them in the sub and it makes literally everything a million times worse.

I will give the dub some credit for being so utterly ridiculous that it's funny. I will provide a few timestamps for the funniest jokes that only appear in the dub from the first 19 episodes (but I really recommend looking up Hetalia dub funny moments on youtube because some of them are really priceless):

Now I've had this post typed up for a bit and originally I wasn't going to talk about the fandom but after reading the article that he assigned (and going through the fandom unit), I see that there is a lot of reference to fandom in particular so I want to at least mention it.

Not the 2 biggest problems with the Hetalia fandom are racism and the fetishization of gay men.

As mentioned in the article, there have actually been multiple fan incidents of them dressing up in WWII German military uniforms Germany/Prussia cosplay, and standing in front of temples with fake guns or doing nazi salutes in convention photos (If we want to bring racism and fetishization of gay men together there were two people who kissed in a holocaust memorial museum in Italy and Germany cosplay... there is no picture of this so it might be a rumor but it was well-known so it is worth mentioning). There were also a lot of people using imperialist Japan flags in cosplay/fanart and writing incredibly inappropriate fanfiction about real-life events.

If you would like to see any of these incidents feel free to look up "Hetalia the Boston Incident" I don't really wanna include the photos here.

The fetishization is not unique to the Hetalia fandom, but it is amplified to the max. Obviously, within Hetalia, there are almost no female characters, so this leaves only male characters to be shipped with one another. Now suddenly Germany is an uwu gay bean and not an actual war criminal. At the moment of writing this Hetalia has 32105 M/M fics on ao3 which is only one of the three fanfiction sites, with ao3 not even becoming popularized until after the peak of the Hetalia fandom. (the most popular ship being America/England who refer to each other as brothers in the show as England raised America, showing another problematic part of the fandom). I would argue that Hetalia has one of the gayest fandoms (My Hero Academia is giving it a run for its money though) and I agree with the article that it is inaccurate to say that this is only done by straight cis women. The fact of the matter is a lot of queer teens used Hetalia as an outlet to express their own sexuality through these characters. The straight women that do fetishize BL are likely only doing so because anime creators suck at writing good female characters.

I think that the "level of gayness" turns straight fans away from watching the show (again MHA is the same way today) as it is hard to interact with the fandom without seeing some yaoi content. However, many people view this as something wrong or cringy, when in reality it is a normal part of fandom culture. When gay people have such little content that is actually gay, you cannot blame us for creating our own through characters that we like/relate to. Again, I think the only issues that arise here are the problematic ships that give young people a bad impression of relationships (abusive, incest, pedophilia, etc) or the arguable problematic ones like China/Russia or Lithuania/Russia as again these are real countries with real political relations. (However, I will never forget the time that there was Russia/China fanart on the news, maybe they approve and I shouldn't be complaining)

The thing is, Hetalia only seems so bad because the fandom is so large and so young. A lot of shows have fandoms that sexualize the characters and have kinda problematic fans, but the sheer volume makes things seem worse. This is something that we covered when we watched Genshiken, but there is a lot of negative stigma behind this fandom in particular, but it is just a loud minority that gets a lot of news coverage between fandoms.

It also raises the question "Is a show responsible for the response of its fans?"

Because while Himaruya has no control over what people do with his characters or how they interpret a plot, if a majority of people are leaving your show spouting vaguely racist rhetoric and interpreting your show one way, isn't there some validity in that interpretation? I think a creator has to be aware of their audience, which in this case is a very young and impressionable audience who might not understand how offensive some of the things they are doing really are. They don't hold the same ability to separate fiction from reality.

That being said Hetalia had a large impact on fandom culture as a whole, largely starting things like 'ask a character' panels (along with like homestuck but we don't talk about her). If you go to any convention you will probably find a Hetalia cosplayer, and if you watch any dub there is probably a voice actor from Hetalia there.

I also want to mention Hetalia is also a fandom full of cultural capital, If you don't know every niche fact, you're not a real fan, If you haven't read Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart you haven't even met the entry-level requirements to be a fan. There are also no characters that are too sacred to be altered within the fandom. If you want to put Germany in a maid dress have at it, if you want to see all the characters as girls you're in luck cause Himaruya literally drew them. Fanfictions can take place anywhere from WWI to the present day and you can put any characters in any scenario and make it believable. There are thousands of pieces of fanwork, fan art, fangames, and fan AUs. These characters are malleable to fit your personal preference and there is really no way you could be mad at this as Himaruya does this himself, with no real established canon.

Himaruya is also the king of moe characteristics because he turned these Hetalia men into any cute thing he could think of, Chibi versions (Chibitalia), female versions (Nyotalia), and cat versions (Nekotalia). He has no reservations about drawing the characters in a dress or in cat ears. He gave the characters human names to allow for more standardized human AU's and made a DS dating game. He encourages fans to take his characters and use them in their fanworks as they see fit, canon is up to interpretation itself. I think Himaruya himself was a huge part of fandom culture (not that I could tell you cause no one knows anything about the guy) and saw how the female characters were often treated by fans and turned it on its head, allowing for females to sexualize the males this time.

Also, none of the male characters in this show resembles a Hegemonic form of masculinity. Even the most masculine character in the show (Germany) can be seen doing more "feminine things" like wearing a dress or proposing to a man. Which, you know, I guess is a good diversion from things you would typically see in an anime of this nature (but again there are a lot of instances of characters being feminine being played for laughs, like a man being girly is something inherently funny). Feat. Germany proposing to Italy with a tomato ring.

I am Hetalia's biggest hater, however, I cannot deny the impact that it has had on my life and how much I love to talk about it. Hetalia is what introduced me to anime and fandom (and tumblr) for the first time. I met a lot of people I still talk to today because of this show. It encouraged me and a lot of other people to actually get interested in history. Thanks to this show I can identify every country in Europe, and it was a lot easier to remember historical facts if I just imagined the Hetalia characters. Also, Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart is a literary masterpiece and there is a reason it almost has a five-star rating on goodnotes (https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/22064556) I love you George DeValier I hope you're doing good wherever you are.

I would like to make it abundantly clear that despite everything I've said that might make me sound like a woke blue-haired liberal, I don't really think this show is some horribly racist show or that the people who enjoy it are racist. I just wanted to provide a deeper outlook on the impact a seemingly dumb show can have on real people. I can't really blame the show for the terrible response of the fandom and it did honestly get better in later seasons that are not focused on WWII.

Despite all the bad stuff, it is a relatively funny little 5-minute watch, and you can really just jump in at any point you want to. If you don't take it as seriously as I do you might even enjoy it a little.

If you actually read this far I have major respect for you, I'm really excited to see what the general consensus on this show is.

Prussia and South Italy were my favorites in case anyone cared

If you're wondering why I didn't do my presentation on Hetalia despite my extensive knowledge, it is because I would be incredibly biased and I would go off the rails I think.

Also, my biggest fear is current Hetalia fans finding this and killing me, that might seem irrational but the Gundam fans found me last time so I wouldn't put it past them.

(By many of his videos I literaly mean I only ever watched his 'Whitley is a victim too' videos because his thirst for certain characters and defensiveness towards Raven, Harriet and Cinder make me mad). Eruptionfang, or Cole as he's known on Twitter, is in love with the idea of emo male sociopaths who talk about moral grayness.

A sociopath has no morals...has no virtues...but they are portrayed in media as charismatic....and people are brainwashed on that trope.

Vergil from Devil May Cry, Vicious from Cowboy Bebop, and Adam Taurus.

All three are trenchcoated men wielding katanas who are emo and hurt other people, often innocent people, and betray others for their personal goals.

Everyone attempts to defend their actions, all 3 of them.

But we first see Adam raiding train, wanting to kill all the passengers...and we see Blake stopping him.

Every single Adam Apologist began accusing Blake of being a war criminal and just as bad as Adam ...simply for standing in his way.

What's more, these people Blame Blake for Adam's actions.

So Sexism and Homophobia is something you'll find a lot of on EruptionFang's discord server...if he has one. He is basically another Adel Aka or Hero Hei...I'm not touching his channel, but word is that he IS a defender of child molester Vic Micnogna, who was Qrow Branwen's first VA.

Now as for Cinder Fall? Basically she's trying to kill the female main protagonist...for Cole, that's enough to put her in his good book.

Raven Branwen? We first meet her after her tribe wiped out a village just to plunder it...Raven began talking about Social Darwinism...which RWBY Critics ascribe to, and EruptionFang was furious to find that Raven's tribe was not as strong as her, because it meant that Raven was using social darwinism as an excuse to do what she wanted.

I like that about RWBY....they cut open "gray morality" and show how it is just an excuse for bad people to do whatever they want...and the fact that women oppose these people upset a lot of men and women who hate the female protagonists and love the male authority-fascist villains.

He loves Harriet because she's basically "Good soldiers follow orders" and we see in The Clone Wars and RWBY how blindly following orders causes problems.

As for Jacques? Despite him slapping Weiss, Cole decided that it had to be Weiss' fault for the slap, and that anything Weiss said against him, from stealing the family legacy, to changing his name as a con-man? Was Weiss needing to be disciplined.

He was also furious at Jacques Death because he wanted Jacques to get a redemption.

You'll see that RWBY Critics HATE the idea of female characters like Ilia Amitola or Emerald Sustrai getting redemptions, but cis white male characters like Adam or Ironwood or Jacques not getting redemptions is apparently character assassination.

At the end of the day, RWBY has more good POC characters than bad...and more POC live to see another day.

Which is ironic considering that the villains that the RWBY Critics defend so passionately are all white men in positions of authority.

This love of fascism, the military industrial complex, unchecked power, and men being allowed to commit whatever atrocities as long as it can be called "tough decisions" or "morally gray" is what led me to have a disdain for RWBY Critics who claim to "care about the show and want it to be better"

No...they want the show to lionize their white male character over the women protagonists.

And when people claim to be "Fixing" RWBY? Their focus is on hurting female main characters by stripping away their characteristics and overfocusing on men...especially the bad ones.

Because between female main characters with optimism vs male authority figure antagonists?

A criticism channel will always choose the male.

And I pity them.

In the meantime, take these to use to block out EF's channel.

The narrative is a time slip fantasy in which a Gulf War veteran who suffered a death or near-death experience while on active service returns to the United States where he is blamed for the death of a policeman, and incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane. Subject to experimental treatments there, which involve him being shut inside a morgue casket while tied in a straitjacket, he eventually learns to travel through time and is able to offer help to various people.

i watched this in high school one lazy afternoon with my mom and became obsessed. i don't think it did well? or was really on anyone's radar? but Keira Knightley is fucking gorgeous in it as is Adrien Brody - both of which i had massive crushes on back then. it's definitely HEAVY and darker, obviously, and has a bit of an open ending but i eat that shit up.

i've watched promare an embarrassing amount of times, but hey, it's actually a little queer so there's that! the synopsis is just a drop in the hat of what the movie actually is. we love anarchist rebels and advocates for equal rights (and enemies to lovers between a smol angry rebel and a big lovable himbo.) small note - we lost Galo's english VA, Billy Kametz, last year to his battle with cancer. he played a huge role in a lot of my favorite shows and games and it really broke my heart.

DRAGONHEART (1996) dir. Rob Cohen 🌸

Sir Bowen, an English knight of "the Old Code", mentors Saxon prince Einon in his ideals to make him a better king than his father Freyne. While suppressing a peasant rebellion, rebels ambush and kill Freyne. Then a young peasant girl named Kara accidentally wounds Einon's heart. Einon's Celtic mother Aislinn has Einon taken before a dragon and asks him to save the boy's life. The dragon makes Einon promise to be a just ruler with honor and replaces Einon's wounded heart with half his own. However, Einon proves more oppressive by enslaving the former rebels that killed his father and forcing them to rebuild a Roman castle. Einon also has Kara's father, who led the insurgents, blinded. Believing the dragon's heart has corrupted Einon, Bowen swears vengeance on him and all dragons by hunting them down.

listen, i'm old okay? i watched this obsessively when i was a kid. i didn't own the VHS, i'm not really sure why? but anytime it was on tv i was glued to it. i think i eventually did record it onto a vhs.

MILK (2008) dir. Gus Van Sant 🌸

In 1972, Harvey Milk and his then-lover Scott Smith leave New York for San Francisco, with Milk determined to accomplish something meaningful in his life. Settling in the Castro District, he opens a camera shop and helps transform the area into a mecca for gays and lesbians. In 1977 he becomes the nation's first openly gay man elected to a notable public office when he wins a seat on the Board of Supervisors. The following year, Dan White kills Milk in cold blood.

i watched this just as i was coming to terms with my own queerness. i wanted to learn more about queer history and this movie came out at the exact perfect time for that. i was a freshman in high school, i'd never heard of Harvey Milk before, but my mom had and she encouraged me to watch it. it got me doing a lot more research into queer history and learning where we came from so while the movie may not be perfect, may not be wholly accurate, i thank it for that.

TITAN A.E. (2000) dir. Don Bluth & Gary Goldman 🌸

"Titan A.E." takes place in the distant future, after Earth has been obliterated by a mysterious alien race known as the Drej. Cale is a human teenager who has been given a mysterious map by his father, leading him on an unforgettable journey.

i am nothing if not an absolute slut for Don Bluth movies. that man illustrated my childhood. as i got older my mom told me about Titan A.E. and said it was a must watch for my nerdy ass. she was correct. it's not the perfect movie but it's a great look at what Don Bluth and Gary Goldman could've done if we'd considered "animation for adults" back then. we're finally getting somewhere with it now, and i like to think we have them to thank in part for that.

also fun story my husband met one of the animators for this film at a party where a lot of people were doing a lot of drugs and he gave him his card AND MY HUSBAND LOST IT

9. worst part of canon

sam continually getting sidelined in the mcu. his story got pushed aside a hell of a lot for bucky's storyline in tfatws (and some of the writing to resolve what we did get of sam's story... oof) and now he's barely in any other projects and we get so little news of him. avengers con in ms marvel had like 2 or 3 different uso show girls but no captain america sam wilson????? seriously???? not to mention the fact that cap4 seems to just be a hulk movie with sam added in. it only ever gets more frustrating with each piece of news or each little scrap of sam they give us

peggy's a complicated character. she's tough and she's clever and she's strong and she's bullheaded and she's done horrible things bc she thought it furthered her end goal, and people hate on her for the latter, which i do understand, but like. it's no different from a lot of the characters people love that did something similar? tony made a robot that tried to destroy the earth bc he thought it was gonna be beneficial. nick fury actively authorized and participated in building a program that could eliminate anyone deemed a threat from space at the push of a button, because he thought that's what was needed for national security/safety. peggy fucked up, sure, but it's not like she didn't do a lot of good as well.

she's more than handy in a fight. she disobeyed direct orders to help steve go to azzano and rescue bucky and the rest of the 107th. she was an important part of mission planning for the howling commandos, to the point that we see all the commandos that are left by the time agent carter happens respect her as a leader. she willingly drops the last bit of steve's blood, which is one of very few things she has left of him, into the water because she knows it could be used for horrible things, even though it killed her to do it. she disobeys orders again to try and clear howard stark's name, and doesn't give up until his name has been cleared. she gave us the absolutely fantastic line "i know my value. anyone else's opinion doesn't really matter"

i just think peggy's a genuinely interesting, morally complicated character whose flaws people would celebrate as being interestingly morally gray or whatever if she wasn't a woman in the middle of a favored white man ship is all. and i think she's more than what people make her out to be

(also her and steve knew each other for two years, which is practically a lifetime in wwii, before steve went into the ice. stop making the "left for a girl he knew for two weeks" jokes. they're inaccurate and they discount a very important relationship steve had during the war, even if you don't think he and peggy would last based on the experiences steve had in modern times)

I keep seeing people calling Terry and Kreese “war criminals.” I don’t see any evidence of this. Do you think that applies to them or do you think some people don’t know what that phrase actually means/what war crimes actually are? If there’s anything in the series or movies that proves they’ve committed actual war crimes, please point it out to me, but it seems more like they’re the ones who had war crimes committed against them…? Don’t mean to stir anything up, just wanted to get your opinion.

Okay, but people also call Daniel Larusso a 'slut baby girl' on the regular when he merely wears the color pink or red, so I wouldn't expect too much over here, sadly.

Well, I am not going to woobify the military, but yeah, on screen, we never actually see them commit war crimes per se (Maybe they never wanted to show us? Probably. The demographic of this show isn't exactly the same one that would watch Apocalypse Now, although we do see glimpses of some really messed up stuff in Terry's brief flashbacks over breakfast), and in fact, you get the impression that a lot could've happened in that cage during their POW captivity in context; anything ranging from torture, starvation to random executions to kill the morale of the captives. We don't know how long they could've been there. Could've been months, realistically. At the time same time, Terry, John and co. didn't go to war because it was a picnic or a fun vacation. Does anyone? Not even the hallowed likes of Mr. Miyagi. Also, wasn't Johnny Lawrence himself in the military at one point? Seldom mentioned fact. They were victims as much as they victimized. Someone's enemies as much as young soldiers with pain inflicted upon them. Tools in an imperialist overseas war as much as its very human consequences spat back out into the system and we see those consequences staring back at us in the very storyline ranging well over half a century. The answer is often never as clear as one thing or the other. What and how much they done was left vastly to interpretation because hey, annoyingly enough, it is Netflix. All that we know is that they returned home irrevocably broken and mentally scared. Changed, in Terry's own words, bringing back everything from psychological damage, bipolar disorders, PTSD, split identities and some very messed up worldviews. I prefer to see them as (severely untreated) causalities of war, if anything, even with therapy involved. I just generally think it is slightly kinder and nobody has to agree with me.

I mean, the other extreme is that podcaster calling a teenage Twig a 'sniveling coward' for being rightfully scared during, get a load of this, his time spent in a prison camp with people around him being tortured and executed one by one, so ---😬

Hot Wheels: BF5: Netflix Anime AU Fanfic

Yeah I'm gonna try this. Basically, if I were to make BF5 into a Netflix Anime AU/Reboot of itself, like I posted about before. Lots of little dumb ideas.

Dunno if anything will come of it but here are my thoughts:

Morally grey Sage from get-go. She genuinely advocates for killing the Vandals, Zemerik, and Zug if they can because it's the fastest way to end the war and protect Earth and the Sentients. She remembers the reds but never says anything about them and doesn't remember how they'd be awoken anyway.

Genderqueer Stanford + Trans Spinner. I love. Trans rep.

Vert/Zoom, because I will go fucking down with this ship

Tezz/AJ, because grumpy/sunshine is the best trope and you cannot stop me

and Sherman/Agura/Stanford because polyamory is great and if you watch Cold as Ice and Mag Wheels and Blue Tide back to back you will understand why I ship it.

Grace becomes a secret keeper in season one. The gang are shitty liars and people are only so dumb. She puts together that something is going on and tells Vert to either explain it, or she's going to Johnson with her theory of "it's a fucking cult". So he shows her the basement. She gets a watch but no vehicle (until late season 2/early season 3)

Zoom ends up in a pretty entertaining situation where Sheriff Johnson likes him and no one else on the team because Zoom grew up in a monastery, and when he tells Johnson, that reminds Johnson of all the samurai and samurai-cowboy movies he loves and he gets really curious about Zoom's skills and wants to get him a cowboy hat

Krytus and the reds stay scary way longer. Like, skin of their teeth, Sage even post-fuser is scrambling for more weapons, scary.

Everybody's a little neurodivergent~ As a treat~

Spinner and Zemerik boink at one point. There's a long running consequence of that being that Zemerik goes easy on the Buster in battle zones and helps them out a lot more willingly against fellow enemies. Their eventual friendship as a result of the kidnapping and boinking is what leads Zemerik to aligning himself fully with Sage

Everybody's a little bit horny~ As a treat~ And Vert and Stanford definitely roll into bed together a few times because. They're horny dudes with no standards. And they share a bedroom wall. Easy math.

WORLDBUILDING AND LORE AND HISTORY AND LORE and the actual explanation for Stanford's ancestry, Sherman's super strength, the Blue Flame, the Crimson One, and so much more. Also a fuckton of Sentient war history.

How did Tezz survive? And shouldn't he have needed to recover? Yes to both.

War. Criminal. Sage. The gang actually has to grapple with the fact that they're actively taking orders from a war criminal and whether or not Sage was justified in what she did and if she had any other option

There's gonna be a whole arc centered on Agura's hunting ability and its importance to the team's survival in dangerous situations

Zoom almost accidentally becomes Vandal Warlord because he almost kills Kalus when he's trying to save Vert's life. Kalus becomes very invested in Zoom after this.

Which is all to say that by the end of season one, Zemerik is more interested in the brothers than Vert and Kalus is more interested in Zoom than Vert, and Vert makes a joke that he's feeling a little neglected and wishes he had the spotlight again... about an hour before we meet Krytus. Who is fucking obsessed with Vert.

Kalus has a husband. He's a black panther named Xunsu.

Zeke also has a husband. And is Jewish.

The slow spiral of grey morality, battle zone exhaustion, and fear that the war is never going to end

Oh, in season one they are in a battle zone where they encounter one of the red cryo pods but when they describe it to Sage she tells them it's nothing to worry about. Needless to say, when it gets cracked open and fucking Kyburi walks out of it in season two, they're a little P.O.'d with Sage.
