oppenheimer really wants to present oppenheimer himself as a complex person responsible for bad things but really doesn't. make much reference at all to said bad things. the impact of the bombings is reduced to a single montage (that isn't even showing what happened: it's showing oppenheimer imagining it happening to a room full of americans) and a moment where they mention the number of people dead + the effects. when the images of the aftermath are shown the camera instead focuses on oppenheimer looking away, which i understand, but the audience doesn't see any tangible impact either. the effects of the test on the surrounding area aren't mentioned at all. like i understand that some things won't be shown in a film but if you're trying to present someone as responsible for bad things then i think it weakens what you're going for if you don't really show said things. anyway

#i said a lot of this on letterboxd but its actually really not easy to discuss things on there #technically i think it's stunning but i can't actually give it a rating because i am so deeply conflicted on how it deals with its central #issue. so #neon has thoughts #i mean you're free to disagree but i was uncomfortable going in and i was still uncomfortable after watching #and i understand depiction =/= glorification but i do feel more care should have been given to what actually happened to people #if they wanted to present the full complexity of what happened. also the movie does end up as a hero/villain kind of thing anyway in the #trial section like ave pointed out on letterboxd #like. i think if you're making a movie about the creation of the atom bomb. you can't really shy away from any aspect of it. and it feels to #me like oppenheimer does #ok ill stop now. but yeah

In Just a Man immediately after Odysseus says “how could I hurt you?” the next couple notes that play sound like a trumpet to me - which leads me down the rabbit hole of “this is Odysseus being ruthless in order to protect his family and kingdom by killing an actual baby” and the whole Poseidon is represented by a trumpet and his theme of ruthlessness is mercy whICH JUST????????? THERE IS SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THAT

#epic the musical #personal #genuinely am not sure if that’s a trumpet it could be Ody’s neon guitar that plays when he’s being emotional/vulnerable? #but it sounds like a trumpet to me and I can’t stop thinking about what if it IS a trumpet and how that could relate Odysseus and his action #to Poseidon and ruthlessness being mercy #because that act is NOT a mercy to Odysseus it is something that actively haunts him with guilt #but it is ruthlessness being mercy to baby #Astyanax because it was a quick death that the baby will not suffer for #and that quick death COULD be viewed as Odysseus being merciful to himself in a twisted way as well #because the act itself was not something he would ever view as mercy for the impact it had on him #but HOW he decided to do it can be seen as mercy for both him and little Astyanax due to the lack of suffering #during the actual death #all Odysseus had to do was drop him and all Astyanax had to do was…… fall #by NO MEANS does that make it any easier of an act for him to do which is made very clear in Just a Man and later songs where he speaks of #his guilt for all that he has done in his life #but it is still ruthlessness AND mercy based on how you view the actions and the thought process and influence of those actions #so if that IS a trumpet or is another instrument that is meant to sound like a trumpet #then that’s fascinating to connect that act to Poseidon so early on before we ever hear the word ruthless in the music at all #although if it’s Ody’s guitar then that’s also brilliant bc the whole song is him being vulnerable and those few notes stand out #so strongly to me because it is near silent when they play

Again, I don't think choosing to fight the others (not even considering the fact that They Are Also Fighting Him Too because they're all in the Desire Royale at that point in the story) makes him a hypocrite when he's not acting like he's better for doing so. He consistently paints himself as selfish and evil for what he's doing because he doesn't think he's better for doing it. He's just doing this to achieve his goals the only way he knows how to, and that's by being bullheaded and stubborn about it. He also knows by that point that Neon and Keiwa are not going to be talked out of chasing their own goals, so if he has to fight them to "save" them, that's what he'll do.
