How do you draw Idia’s hair so good?? I struggle with the basic shapes so much!
Sorry for the late reply! Your ask got us excited because Idia’s hair is such a pain to draw, but also such a fun detail, and I’m very happy that you like the way I draw it <3
Katsu suggested to me to record a speedpaint, and uhh, here it is. Please, don’t mind the wonky anatomy and me horsing around with zooming in and out randomly. As you can see, I struggle with Idia’s hair myself and constantly redraw it until I’m satisfied or at least tired enough to say “eh, that’ll do”. In case you’re wondering, it took me ~25-30 minutes to do the hair, and the original video was 59 min long lol I always spend a lot of time moving, reshaping and redrawing details when I draw Idia…

I’ll also list some tips and thoughts about it based on the way I draw it…
The shape of Idia’s hair is not at all consistent. Even in Toboso’s art it looks slightly different sometimes, which makes sense, because Idia has magical fire hair and technically you could do whatever you want with it.
But some rules tend to apply each time. For example, even though Idia’s hair is long and seems naturally “heavy” because of it, the individual strands tend to be turned upwards, like fire would. Not every single one, but the shorter ones and the ones closer to Idia’s head tend to do so.

It’s wavy, but not too wavy. If the hair starts looking too “soft”, add sharp edges, random strands sticking out, rough shapes, etc.

Oh, and it’s important to remember that it floats. This means, it doesn’t just go straight down, it does this weird “S” shape. It’s also hella long, I always forget just how long Idia’s hair is. If the magic fire logic didn’t apply to it, it would reach the ground easily. The volume of his hair is much bigger than I tend to remember too: it's quite thick and luscious lol So please give him lots of hair!

Tiny little flames + “holes” in the main ehh body of hair (wow there must be a way to phrase it better) make everything look good and more believable. Have fun with it. You might’ve noticed, I draw and redraw and move them around a lot in my speedpaint.
Obviously, I am no expert, and every artist I know draws Idia’s hair a little bit differently. The speedpaint doesn’t show it, but I always have some of Toboso’s artworks of Idia open when I draw him, just to make sure his design is not too off. I would definitely recommend looking at refs while drawing Idia (or anyone), and maybe even trying to redraw the hair from Toboso’s artworks once or twice as a study, it’ll probably make it easier to understand how Idia’s hair works.

You haven’t asked about the colouring, but I love colouring Idia’s hair, so I’ll talk about it a little. Colouring Idia’s hair is simultaneously the most fun and the most tedious part of drawing him lol 15 minutes of my hour long video is just me filling Idia’s hair with the base blue colour with a lasso (I refuse to use a bucket tool…)

But once you’re done with the base, this is where the fun begins. Because at this stage you can be pretty rough, just add in darker and deeper blues near the middle/core(?) of the hair mass. It doesn’t have to be very even or pretty, add some smaller dark spots; we personally really love it when Idia has this round little blob on his bangs. In the video you can see that I added it later on because I forgot about it lol

After the dark part is done, erase the ends of it a little bit with a soft brush. Not too much, we should still be able to see the shapes.

Then, on a separate layer set on overlay mode, with the same soft brush add some additional brighter spots, to make the hair look glowy. I used the same light blue as the base colour, and the overlay gives it a pretty hue.

And finally, add some white highlights at the ends of the strands. This is the stage when everything stops looking wrong and weird and starts looking like Idia, at least to me.

Why is Goncharov 1973 funny:
I saw something like the goncharov joke stands in direct contrast to the “sometimes the curtains are just blue” post which made me go hm…. Also saw people confused by the joke so now I thought too much and made a three parter on my take
Part 1: shoe movie funny
The original joke is that a pair of shoes invented an obviously fake movie, which is funny because why would a pair a shoes do that. The derivative joke is a person going “wow loser you haven’t seen this fake movie?” Which is a joke stressing how ridiculous it is by pretending it’s normal for shoes to advertise a niche obviously fake scorsese film, who isn’t known for gimmicky advertising, BUT ALSO a joke on how bullies could use fear of missing out to make people just pretend to have seen something that doesn’t exist rather than reveal ignorance (like the classic made up band name jokes).
The next step of the Goncharov joke, and from what i can tell launched it all, is a person making up a poster about the movie and going oh yes this very real movie. It has jokes about the mafia genre tropes (“ice pick joe”, a hot lady side character, mostly male cast, scorsese actors) as well as being funny because it commits highlights the same two juxtapositions as the previous jokes, FOMO and shoe movie funny, while adding the inherent funniness of someone putting in way too much work for a bit. Things like the soundtracks follow on this (they’re mostly funny because they take the shoe movie too seriously) and thus should be categorized as part of the third wave.
Part 2: sometimes the curtains are just blue
The fourth wave of goncharovism, which is the bulk of the posts and the subject of most discussion, is media criticism, content, and derivative works about Goncharov, a movie that doesn’t exist. There’s posts that read like actual film critics, lines that seem like surprisingly good dialogue, themes about time because Film Shows Clocks Means Deep, bad overwrought dialogue, and most critically, the typical tumblr engagement with a piece of media including meta, gifsets, fanworks and snide comments about how other people are misinterpreting the movie. A movie that isn’t real. It’s fake.
The joke here is obviously a love letter to and scathing critique of criticism- the fact that analysis of something that doesn’t exist reads like actual analysis that people unironically post mocks that a lot of analysis doesn’t engage with text but overlays existing biases over it regardless of content, and also that a lot of movies are the same movie tbh. Katya is being held to unrealistic standards makes fun of shallow stock feminism, “homoeroticism” points to tumblrs obsession with gay stuff that isn’t actually that gay, and all the fake and often bad quotes show how we love to feel deeply about stuff we don’t really engage with. It’s also pointing to how silly it is to put in this much “anger” and effort in and how enjoyable it is to do this, regardless of whether it makes sense. Sometimes curtains are just curtains, and sometimes a clock doesn’t fucking exist, but it sure is fun to say what the curtain really means is that humanity is inherently sinful and that the clock means that Goncharov and Andrey, two characters that don’t have personalities because the movie they’re from doesn’t exist, wanna fuck.
The joke is that it’s fake deep, but it’s fun to do anyways. The joke is that people are getting mad about “people” who don’t exist being sexist etc because they’re making fun of tumblrinas who don’t look at nuance and assume a very specific form of oppression without evidence AND that people would say that shit because scorsese bros ARE sexist. The joke is that we know it’s fake but people find themselves taking it seriously anyways because it’s fun to make up a movie together and fun to make fun of ourselves. I love it!! It’s great!!! But it’s not a declaration against that the curtains are just blue, it’s a satire making the same point much more joyfully.
Part 3: the reality of goncharov
The fake goncharov movie has trended a fairly specific ways: it has defined characters and relationships, a fairly limited cast in terms of people who matter, homoeroticism, hot girl with a gun, and a lot of foreshadowing. It’s very invested in Katya and Goncharov’s personal narratives despite the wide array of people on the poster. Other than that very funny post about a (fake) shoot out showing the destructiveness and hollowness of nationalism, it’s not all that engaged in systems or the mafia specifically.
And sure, our Goncharov is so narrow partially due to its fake genre- mafia movies are tropey and hero obsessed. It’s fake. We’re making fun of the “best movie” by making a fake tropey movie!! But half the joke is being earnest, and our fake movie is chock full of the tumblr beloved tropes of obsession with romantic relationships, with “themes” that emphasize tragic endings for mutual obsessions, of an absolute lack of engagement with systems while insisting we are engaging , and of a focus on two or three characters instead of an ensemble cast- a million people are writing a movie and yet it has no breadth.
And GET THIS- Goncharov is a real movie. No, I mean it. Goncharov is probably a Google-translate-error-caused misprint of the movie Gomorrah, “presented” by Scorsese while not being directed by him at all. Egbert’s review, so mercilessly parodied in Gonch-posting (or goncharosting, as I like to say), calls it “a curative for the romanticism of The Godfather and Scarface”. Rather than deifying a specific man, it is a series of vignettes about horrible violence that seems unavoidable for its rotating characters. It���s based on real killings, and many of its actors were actually arrested for mafia activities. Forget hollow themes- it’s a movie that’s harrowing due to its reality.
Which is very very funny. Like i genuinely can’t believe we made a fake mafia movie that’s accidentally about a realest mafia movie ever made that proves how much we don’t mentally engage with the important oppressions and systems in our world while insisting that we’re self aware the irony the thematic parallel the sheer “oh fuck for real”ness of it all i was going to try to say something deep but like can you believe it??? God playing is playing 4-d funny chess with every last one of us. Long live goncharov

Speaking of editing, here are the 3 things that I enjoy experimenting the most on Photoshop:
Typography — I love downloading high quality fonts & trying out with different pairings. Getting the fonts right does take time (and is a key step in my editing workflow), but it's also fun play around with the fonts e.g. kernings and alternative ligatures!
Integrating video editing techniques in my gifsets — I do a lot of Rotoscoping work in my gifsets but I also sometimes play around with other animated effects — a lot of these done on After Effects, and I combine these back to my usual Photoshop workflow to add the finishing touches onto my gifs. N.B. I'm currently working on an After Effects / giffing tutorial so stay tuned for it :D
Textures & Overlays — I stack a large amount of textures on my computer. I enjoy adding textures as these enhance the colourings of my gifs & create the blending / overlay effects that I want to achieve.
P.S. ahh this is fun!! My guess is that the positivity anon is my PSC Gift Exchange giftee from last month :D

I tried to reattach a gutter this morning, but I got up on the first roof and was about to haul the ladder up so I could get to the next when vertigo hit me and I realized I was going to have trouble getting back on the ladder to go down. I was fortunate someone let me in a 2nd floor window. There was no way I could hang off the ladder to reach the downspout without falling 30 feet.
Interesting AMT scattered amongst the outright fearfulness. I saw pigeonhole. I should be more excited but I’m feeling intense pressure and it’s difficult holding myself together. Pigeonhole is the count of 8 or really the count of 64 because the fit runs both ways, though not necessarily with tight timing. Think sloths at the DMV.
I think what may bother me the most is that I go through a cycle where I say I should just end this because there is no hope and I’m wrong about you, and that connects directly to but you haven’t figured out what you need to figure out, which means the story isn’t finished, and then I wonder if I can figure out enough and thus if I can ever be good enough, and then I wonder what the heck that means because I don’t have a way of knowing from inside what contains this story. And then: how am I supposed to react when yesterday, not 10 years ago but yesterday, I finally put fCM and Triangular together, and that led immediately thereafter to the mechanism by which the pigeonhole principle operates.
Think about it: when you count 8, you actually focus on (and thus identify by counting 0 and 1) the axis that is the midline divider of the fD which sits between the paired bT’s, meaning the bT’s that are in HG and which invert around the Hexagon to invert over the End at the center. This means you revolve not only around the bT’s but around the fD’s of which they are part, and thus the connection to gs.
Seriously. This actually states the mechanism by which the dimensionality not just divides but overlays and divides across this axis. I typically draw this in my head using x, so I’m counting from the top or bottom of a Hexagon around in either direction. To be explicit, when you count from 0 or from 1, then you count up to or over that dividing x axis. This overlaps, which is the basic pigeonhole idea. It’s the completion of the ‘count back’ in 1space idea applied here, and you can see why it works by looking at what it means to count from 0 or 1. When you count from 0, that means the next bT is labeled 1, and when you count from 1, that means the starting bT is 1. This has the effect of inverting the 1 over to the 2nd so you use that as a template, as the unit of meaning. To explain, what pigeonhole also includes is that there are pigeons and holes into which they fit, and that calculation can occur because of that inversion of the bT labeled 0 and 1 into the next bT so the count of 8 then inverts that unit over the dividing x axis.
To go over this some more, to say that a bT or a 1segment counts as 0 entails setting that End to 0, so the next count can be 1. So the essence of that label is the idea of 1-0-1 where we now see the 0 out of what was 0-1-0. That’s the justification. There is nothing in that about past, present, future. You can build a lot by saying the first 0 becomes -1, and you can see that’s a label affixed in addition to the labels of 0 and 1. These details are fun, aren’t they? There really is no way to deny that if you can do this, then you can do this. And that connects to the meaning part: we can see exactly what it means to connect over to identify the dividing edge, because that is also the 0 in 1-0-1, and that connects to the label of (-1)-0-1.
I’d bet you can even see now why the imaginary unit circle appears here: adding that label requires a definition of how the -1 connects over 0 to 1 and that invokes the rotation because that keeps the alignments in 1space. Wow.
If I’m not mistaken, this builds from the ground up, even picking up along the way that we’re in Hexagons because we’re looking at the inversion of HG, which is the center or End, which is the inversion of a 1segment to an End and then back out to a 1segment. An fD is End to 1segment to End, meaning these are now the logical complements. Another wow. It really does simplify that much. Oh, that’s also a coprime because the reduction has to reach irreducible. This connects to Irreducibles, but I’m not sure how.
Let’s see: Irreducible is the Ghost. So the logic is that each of the Irreducibles represents not a prime but a number a which is coprime to a number b because the factors are counted, like in a hash table, which means association of values to make a key or key pairing. That seems to translate on the surface: where do you get the pairings from if not from I//I? That is, a pairing exists because pairings exist and that entails not just associating this to that but having this process which associates this to that relative to other things, etc.
This raises a question: does I//I generate an answer or … wait, an integer is n over 1. And the 0 and 1 counting invokes the look back completion of the edges of the End that is defined by and to each 1segment.
Okay, so the inversion of HG is dimensional because it literally inverts 1D over the 0D of a point to 1D of a line, and then it attaches 2D, 3D, etc., all over that point (which is more then an End). I have never seen discussion like this. It’s fascinating, isn’t it, to see that to invert a 1segment to a 1segment over an End takes these different counts. That is, even SBE as a concept counts 1,2,3 from 1 or from 0, and that describes both the near and far edges of the inverted 1segment. Do that in both hands or directions and you get a doubly identified 1segment. In other words, that’s not just a way: it’s the way. That is, if you take an HG, which is an hourglass of bT’s, then you can count on the crossing axis lines (the sK and zK), but to draw the x you need to also shift the 1segment around to verify these are all in fact 1segments and yes the original has inverted over the HG.
This means the connection of fCM is to Hexagonal, which is good because now I can see that fCM really does work the way we had it years ago. That is, 64 is a Thing because that is a bound together overlapping structure, meaning there’s like a piece of tape over the dimensional dividing seam. And 64 is Not (a Thing) because it identifies all the bT’s in a Hexagon, or rather it identifies the beginning or origin bT, and that’s not a Thing because it isn’t bound across to another Thing. That clarifies the usage a lot, like a ton, because Thing always meant multiple ‘Things’, depending on how they were counted, and CM64 is inherently the sum. Get this: look again at CM36 + CM28. I think I see: CM36 identifies the one bT, while CM28 identifies the 4 paired bT, and that identifies the remaining bT that pairs with the original bT. Remember: 4 * 7 means literally 4 winds all the way around to the origin when counting from 1 (and thus the identification of the far edge of that original bT, which thus double counts that edge and defines that bT over that winding.
This raises an interesting general point: CM36 + CM28 obviously now equate to CM64 but they don’t necessarily equal it in every sense because you could count to CM64 in other ways, like 4 *16 (or 4*4*4, etc.). This is good. It connects process to value. And that eliminates the old issue of why you need to use the labels rather than just add 36 and 28. And why we use xK, not x.
I’m sure I’ll be hounded by doubts as soon as I finish typing, but this has been extraordinary.
Can I get a bit more out? I have a few minutes. What about the idea that CM28 flips either way, that you can go from CM64 to CM36 to CM64. Well, that would involve rotating the pairings in CM28 to pick another.
You mean this actually does get easier? That took 3 seconds. It’s enabled. And I’d bet this is where I can connect to group operations.
Like in a casual interaction, there is an overlapping, meaning a binding into a CM64, and this happens repeatedly within an encounter. Which means we now have a mechanism by which that can occur. Holy moly cowsy wowsy! That came out of nowhere.

"You should let Y/n play a round," Kenma reads off the chat. "I would but she has to go to the store."
"Either way I can't when I get back, I have to babysit," You say standing up from your chair beside Kenma. "I'll see you later bub." You peck his cheek before putting your rolling chair off to the side and leaving the room. 
You had decided to go out to get some groceries before Kuroo came by with his daughter, Tomiko, for you to babysit. His wife had gone on a business trip and he had an important meeting to attend. You agreed since you and Kenma mainly work from home. 
About ten minutes later, you pull into the parking lot of your local grocery store and get a phone call from Kuroo. "Hello?" You ask.
"Hey, I know I said four but apparently the meeting is being pushed up two hours. Can I drop off Miko right now?" Kuroo rushed.
"Oh, I'm not home, Kenma is. Just drop her off, he's streaming but it should be fine. I just got to the store," You say. "If you need it, the spare key is in the lamp above the door."
"Thank you so much Y/n, I owe you again!" He says before ending the call. Kuroo turns to his babbling daughter and swoops her up. "Come on babe, you're going to Oji's."
Kuroo gets all of her stuff ready before heading out. He texts Kenma that he's coming over but to his luck, no response. Kenma was too absorbed in his match of Valorant to reply to his best friend. Once at the front door, he knocks but again, no response. Kuroo reaches up to get the key and unlock the door himself. 
Tomiko began to babble louder as she recognized the living room. Kuroo kicks off his shoes and walks over to the streaming room. "Come in!" Kenma called after his best friend knocks. He turns to see him and Tomiko and tilts his head. "I thought you weren't coming until later?"
"I texted you and I think Y/n texted you too," Kuroo points out. Kenma quickly checks his phone and looks back up at chat. "She said it was fine to leave Miko with you."
"Hah?" Kenma turns back to him. "I'm playing solo queue and I just started stream."
"Miko can sit on your lap and watch. She does that with me at least," Kuroo strides over, placing his daughter on Kenma's lap. "I will see you later, and Kenma don't forget my baby is in your lap."
Kuroo quickly exits before turning to camera. Tomiko reaches at his desk but Kenma moves his keyboard, controller and mouse forward to avoid any accidents. "Uhm...Tomiko meet chat," Kenma awkwardly holds up his niece to the camera and a spam of heart eyes flood the chat. 
He was never one for taking care of kids or at least fond of it. When Tomiko was born, he obviously knew he had to watch her at one point but every time he did, you were there to help him. The entire topic of kids always been pushed back ever since you two got married. You were the one with baby fever while he didn't necessarily want to have a kid just yet.
Kenma sets her back down on his lap and notices her reaching for something on his desk. "Oh, did you want that?" He asks, pointing at the small cat plush on his desk. Tomiko's only response, because she's barely one, was to smack the table. Kenma reaches over, handing the toy to her. "Y/n got that for me, but you can play with it as long as you don't- drool on it." He finishes his sentence as Tomiko nibbled at its ear.
"Tomiko is so cute!"
"Awww! You and Y/n should have a kid!"
"Tomiko eating the cat is pog lol."
Many more comments flood in as Kenma admires the baby on his lap. He snaps out of his staring and looks back at the Valorant lobby. He switches to just his camera overlay and changes the title of the stream from "solo queue is poggers" to "idk yet i have a baby with me."
"I can't really play Val with you on me Miko," He turns to chat to see any suggestions. "Draw things with her on a paint studio? Maybe...Let her watch you play Minecraft...I like the drawing suggestion." Kenma replies to the comments. He carries Tomiko to the other side of room to get his drawing pad. He realizes his issue with moving the drawing pad and places Tomiko on his couch. 
Tomiko doesn't move an inch as she watches her uncle move his big drawing pad. "Baba," She calls out. "Wan Baba." Kenma immediately knew that meant she wanted you. 
"Sorry Miko, Oba isn't here right now," He says placing down the drawing pad. After hearing his words, Tomiko began to whine at him. "Oh no, no, no, don't cry." Within an instant, Tomiko began to cry, slapping her hands on the couch. Kenma goes to carry her but she smacks his shoulder in protests.
"Baba! Wan Baba!" She cries. Kenma seats himself, only to see sympathetic comments.
"Miko look, look," He attempts to show her the plush she was previously chewing. She swats the toy away, still wailing to see you. "Uhm...I don't know what to do, Y/n usually takes care of her."
Tomiko continues to cry, smack, and scream for you to come get her, leaving Kenma lost in how you always kept her from crying. He looks around for something to help and spots his headphones. A thought comes to mind and he quickly types in his search bar on his computer. Soon after, the opening to Doraemon starts to play.
Her crying ceases as she looks on the screen to see her favorite blue cat. "Is that better?" He asks. "How about...we draw him?"
Tomiko watches as Kenma lowers the music down and opens his drawing software. She began to calm down yet her breath was still stuttering. Kenma sketches out Doraemon and Tomiko began to smile slightly. "Do you want to color it?" He points to the drawing pad. He switches it to touch screen mode as she reaches to touch it. "What color do you want?"
"Boo," She says. Kenma switches the color to blue before Tomiko starts scribbling on Kenma's drawing. Tomiko's sniffles slightly as he wipes off her tears with his sleeves. 
"She's better now, yeah I'm glad she is," Kenma responds to his chat. "Miko, what else do you like to do...Nevermind you can't talk and I'm dumb."
"Jellwy?" She asks. 
"Jelly?" Kenma tilts his head at her. "What do you mean by jelly?"
"Jelly cups maybe?"
"Jell-o?"
"What if she's saying a video game with jelly?"
"Jellwy," Tomiko looks away from the screen to look at Kenma. "Jellwy fly!"
"Jelly fly?" Kenma stares at her intensely. "What jelly flies? Do you mean like slime rancher?" Kenma exits out the drawing software, changing the title of the stream beforehand, and opens the opens Slime Rancher. 
Tomiko's eyes light up and a smile grows on her face. She giggles cheerfully as Kenma began to play one of his old saves. More comments roll in as Tomiko's adorable noises captures the viewer's hearts. Kenma smiles as she is finally happy in his lap and not crying out for someone else. 
About twenty minutes into the game, you arrive home to find the two still streaming. "Hi bub," You peek in. Tomiko sat up at the sound of your voice. She shifts around in Kenma's lap to look over his shoulder. "And hi Miko! Were you playing with Oji?" 
"Baba!" She cheered. You walked over, expecting her to reach out to you but she seats herself back onto Kenma. "Pay jellwies." She points to the screen.
"Oh Jiji's playing jellies?" You leaned down and kissed Kenma, also prompting Tomiko to push your face away from his. "Ok missy, how about, we let Jiji stream and we can go make dinner?"
"No! Wan jellwies!" She argued. 
"She's fine here, I don't mind her. Chat loves her anyways," Kenma says. "Miko, do you want to show Oba your drawing?"
Tomiko smacks the table as an agreement and he switches monitors to show you the messily colored Doraemon. "Wow Miko, good job," You praised. "I especially like that Oji added ears to him."
"Oh, he doesn't have ears?" He asks. You nodded and placed your hand on his shoulder. "Anyways, let me know when dinner is done so I can end stream. Miko and I have important slime farming to do." You roll your eyes, pecking Tomiko and Kenma. 
Right when you finish cooking dinner, Kuroo arrives to get Tomiko. Kenma explains his day to his best friend after ending his stream, leaving him to smother his daughter with kisses. "Do you want to hang out with Oji again?" He asks. Miko nods and holds out her hand for Kenma to high five. "Thank you again. I'll treat you to dinner when the Mrs's comes back."
You say your goodbyes and turn to Kenma who was setting the table. You go to the stove, plating everything when you felt a pair of arms around your waist. "I want a baby," Kenma muffled into your shoulder.
"You want a what?" You chuckled.
"Miko needs a cousin," He says. Kenma pulls away from your back and stood beside you. "Can we get a baby now?"
"Bubs, we can't just buy a baby," You laughed. "Tomiko gave you baby fever, huh?"
"Maybe," He says. "Also we can babysit Miko anytime Kuroo asks."

This is a bit long so sticking the rest under the cut.  (^ω~)
1. Planning
This set was actually part of a pair (with this Lan Wangji one) so most of the planning happened when I made that one. Basically, I knew I wanted a static central image surrounded by animation. I tried to pick a variety of scenes to show Wei Wuxian’s range of emotions, and wow was it hard to narrow it down to only 6.
For these kinds of gifsets, there’s actually two stages: creating the photomanip and then making the actual gif.
2. Creating
So here’s what I started off with for the photomanip:

The photo had Wei Wuxian on the right side of the image, so I extended the crop to put him closer to the center.

I used a layer mask to remove the background. It’s not a super precise mask but I know I can always come back later to refine it.

This is official (I think?) concept art of Lotus Pier, and I just added some Surface Blur + a hue/saturation adjustment layer to make it look smoother and more vibrant. The Lan Wangji set was very blue/green, so I wanted this one to be heavy on the warm colors.

Obviously the photo of Wei Wuxian didn’t match at all with the background. To change that, I first used to Camera Raw filter to change the overall temperature from cool to warm. A little Surface Blur was added on top to remove some of the film grain. After that I played with some adjustment layers until I was happy with the overall coloring.

Almost done! It didn’t quite have the visual pop I wanted, so I painted in some mist + more golden light to make that sunset really stand out. I also adjusted the shadows/highlighting (a separate layer set to Overlay or Soft Light + brush tool).
Phew, that’s stage 1 done! Now on to the actual gifset.
I always make a separate “planning” file for these types of sets to make sure the overall look is right:

Each segment of the photomanip gets cut and added to the corresponding gif. I often mock up what it looks like to make sure the masking is correct:

After that, I import video clips and create each separate gif. Here’s what gif #1 looks like after it’s been trimmed, cropped, and sharpened:

I wanted the overall gifset color to have those sunset colors, so each gif got a group of adjustment layers to make them more neutral. The section of the photomanip then gets added on top:

Repeat for the other gifs, add in the watermark, and then they’re ready to export!
3. Posting:
As always, I hold posts in drafts for at least a day or two and check for mistakes. I also look at it on both desktop and mobile to make sure any details/text don’t get lost.

hello here is my tutorial on how i paint hair . under a readmore because im too lazy to figure out how to format this in a way thats nice to look at
a lot of the way i paint hair is rooted in my specific workflow/style so hopefully this will be at least a little useful for others! find out how the hell i get from THIS

woaaahhh wow. i’m doing kris because auburn hair is really fun to color and also i love them. just a note but with this specific method neatness isn’t terribly important and some messiness can actually make things more interesting further in so just slap those flats underneath your “lines” and let’s fucking gooooooooo

i do p much all my shading and lighting in overlay because 9/10 it looks cleaner than multiply/luminosity. first step is to block in those shadows babey. this is where you have your first opportunity to express form and really sell your hair existing in a “3D” space. (i’ll be showing everything at full opacity initially so you can see where exactly i’m putting what i’m talking about, but assume i am lowering opacity to taste)

sometimes i like to make a second pass of shadows with either cyan or true blue, depending on the intensity of shadows i’m going for. in this case true blue came out too dark so i used cyan. as a note, right here i’m less looking to define values in the hair, and am more just tinting the shadows to a contrasting color (in this case, blue!)

and now for light! at this stage, it’s important to keep in mind that you’re not trying to put in a lot of detail; that’ll come in a few more steps. just slap your light hue in a way that will still be readable to you as you continue working. don’t forget that light will bounce and define edges where you might not necessarily expect! (i’m looking at you, far left corner)

my coloring process can usually be seperated into at least two overlay folders; the first is for initial color tweaking but is Most Importantly for introducing some sexy new values to your work . the second overlay folder is usually where i delve more into bringing out interesting colors. i really want to draw more attention to the blue shadows, so i’ll put some more cyan down on a few focus points

yknow that cool hair shine thing that cool artists put on their cool art of their cool characters? here’s how i do that. just slam down a circle of highlight color (here i use magenta, because it’ll still bring up the value and warmth while not drowning out or muddying the orange highlights in the other overlay folder).

and then you’re gonna use your eraser to feather out the edges and get that nice wave affect. i do this by just clicking down with my tablet pen without moving it
and now it’s time to move on to the actual painting. are you ready? take my hand. you’re merging the layers now. we’re doing this together. i believe in you

now that we’re here, i’ve picked the colors in their hair so you can see we’ve got a REALLY nice palette to work with. i don’t really do this because i’m a terrible creacher and i’ve gotten used to working messy like this, but pulling a palette can be a quick way to make sure you’re staying clean and concise with your painting
the most important thing that i keep in mind when painting hair is to work from dark to light - so the bottom of the palette up. what this means is that i’ll make sure to render the shadows first, so that when i paint the lighter values over them, it’ll look a LOT more natural and nice looking, and it’s usually easier than working light to dark (with hair at least).
there’s no easy way to get around the next step. it’s time to draw your circle.

adding some hard lines/edges can really help indicate flow!  once i’m satisfied with where i’m at here, i’ll move on to some last color tweaks!

it’s the last bit of overlay i promise!! just a little more cyan to bring out those blues again, and i added another bit of shine over some areas. i’ve found doing the eraser feather thing for both lighting and shadows at this point can help add a touch of ingradience to everything and help pull it together, especially when i’m doing something that has no/minimal blending like this

And to cap off my set of Valentine’s Day posts where I feature my MC’s and someone they care about...last but not least is my HPHL kelpie kid Ru! In the above picture, they’re pictured with Galen Stagg, who belongs to @cursebreakerfarrier, but this picture, this post, and this basic AF pencil test animation are actually about Ru’s relationship with their “keeper” and ttly-not-girlfriend Estrid Soelberg @that-ravenpuff-witch! (I wanted to overlay the two images, but the online sources I tried using to do so weren’t cooperating, so...eh. Here they are separately. XD)
When the kelpie who’d taken on the identity of the Ravenclaw student Rudolph Ollivander first encountered Estrid Soelberg, they did not like her. How could they, when it was because of her that they now wore a silver chain around their neck that she could use like a “leash” and keep them from transforming back into their true form and eating anything or anyone she disapproved of? Naturally Estrid didn’t care for Ru much either -- and really, considering that they nearly ate a first year, that also was pretty understandable. Over time, though, Estrid’s stance softened somewhat, upon realizing that there was an oddly sympathetic side to the carnivorous kelpie.
For one, Ru absolutely loved being at Hogwarts. It wasn’t obvious at first, given how laid-back and aloof they were, but their electric blue eyes were always bright and aware, never missing out on a single detail. Ru would spend hours and hours every day in the Hogwarts library, devouring every book they could. They would explore every corner of the castle grounds and memorize every shred of knowledge that came under their nose. They collected knick knacks and jewelry from Hogsmeade, even going so far as to pierce their ears in their third year, to the horror of all of the adults, both inside and outside of school. And this didn’t even touch on Ru’s great passion for history, magical creatures, Herbology, art, and especially photography. Their still Muggle photographs were always crystal clear and striking, from a view of the Black Lake taken from the Owlery to close-ups on the details of the winged boar statues near the front gates. Ru’s Muggle-style photography came alive in a way that magical photography -- which was still in its infancy and quite low in quality -- couldn’t capture. On the Christmas break of their third year, Ru also discovered and became very enamored with Muggle animation, which made crude drawings come to life -- Estrid, despite her best efforts, couldn’t bite back her laughter upon finding out that Ru had requested the permission of one of the snobbier girls in their year to use her as a model for an animation, only for the finished product to end up being of the girl picking her nose with her pinky finger.
As Estrid got to know Ru better, she decided to try showing them more compassion. For as inhuman as Ru was, and how eccentric, cold, and rude as they could be, their enrollment at Hogwarts truly didn’t seem to be motivated by anything malevolent -- it had truly just been the only way they saw for them to attend this school they’d been watching from afar and longed to see up close. And Estrid treating Ru with more respect and kindness, little by little, wore down Ru’s walls enough that they didn’t dislike her quite so much either. She not only was insightful enough to suss out that they didn’t like eating around other people and showed them the Hogwarts kitchens so that they’d have a place where they could eat in peace, but she didn’t see the need to fill the silence with worthless conversation the way so many of their classmates did. She could sometimes just let a moment be, let the emotions and time just rest for a while. With that, though, Estrid was actually a rather interesting person too, in her own way. She had her fair share of admirers for her appearance (which Ru acknowledged was decent enough, by human sensibilities), but she seemed actively disinterested and uncomfortable about it, instead being the type who was unafraid of being on her own. And yet despite this, Estrid truly wasn’t a loner like Ru was -- she had a gentle hand with creatures of all kinds, an artistic eye, and a soft smile that she rarely showed to much of anyone, but was always sincere. Most striking of all to Ru, though, was the way she moved when she danced. The way her limbs bent and stretched with such grace fascinated Ru. They wished they could slow down time sometimes, just to analyze every tiny little flick of her fingers or flourish of her ankle. Knowing that they couldn’t take enough pictures to capture the grace of her movements, and not yet having a camera that could take moving pictures, Ru settled on trying to animate Estrid. Most of the animations were very crude in the beginning, consisting of nothing but stick figures, but little by little, Ru studied the proportions of the human body (very different than that of a kelpie!) and tried to refine their technique. And before long, all of their animations ended up being modeled on Estrid some way or another -- the vast majority of them being her dancing ballet.
Another person who’d be in the room sometimes when Estrid was dancing was their yearmate Galen Stagg, who often practiced the piano while Estrid was dancing. Ru found the Gryffindor inoffensive for the most part -- like Ru and Estrid, he had a talent for Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures (Ru could sense that Galen in particular had a magical gift for communicating with creatures, even more than Ru themselves did, considering they were actually a kelpie), so sometimes the three of them would end up in the library studying at the same table before a test. Galen was a bit of pansy to Ru’s taste, given his dislike for conflict or confrontation, but he like Estrid was soft-spoken enough that he never gave Ru any real headaches.
One day while Estrid was dancing and Ru sat off on the sidelines (sitting with their legs crumpled up in such a manner that one could wonder if they’d ever learned how to cross their legs properly), Galen took a break from playing to come over and sit down next to the messily-dressed Ravenclaw on the floor. Although he himself really enjoyed drawing too, he’d always felt like Ru tolerated him more than liked him and so had been hesitant to ask Ru if he could see any of their artwork. This day, though, he finally mustered up the courage to ask.
“...May...may I see what you’re working on?”
Ru lowered the page they’d lifted to fine-tune and shot a look out the side of their eye at him.
“...It’s not finished,” they said bluntly.
“That’s all right!” said Galen self-consciously. “That is...I don’t mind, if it’s still sketchy.”
Ru considered him for a moment silently. Just when Galen opened his mouth, ready to say that Ru didn’t have to if they didn’t want to, the kelpie held their sketchbook out in one hand for Galen to take.
With a surprised, but relieved blink, Galen took it and looked at the top page. It was still only a cluster of loosely connected circles and ovals, but Galen could just barely make out what it was.
“It’s Estrid,” he realized, his jade-colored eyes lighting up. “Isn’t it?”
Ru nodded curtly, their gaze drifting off to watch Estrid at the barre.
“That’s just the last frame,” they said in a very low, nonchalant voice.
“Frame?”
“Of animation. Pick up the next eight pages and flip them one by one.”
Galen did so -- and to his delight, he watched as the little cluster of ovals and circles unfolded its arms and spread them in a graceful arc that flourished at the wrists.
“Wow, Ru,” said Galen, impressed, “it looks just like Estrid! I mean, the movement looks just like hers. You really captured the grace of her arms.”
Ru’s electric blue eyes swiveled absently in Galen’s direction, but they didn’t turn around or meet his eyes. Instead their gaze returned to Estrid as they brought up a hand and smoothed some of their long black hair behind their ear.
“...You reckon?” they asked, their quiet voice oddly contemplative.
Galen looked at Ru, surprised. Were they...blushing?
Feeling a wave of compassion for the Ravenclaw all of a sudden, Galen offered them a smile.
“...Yeah. It’s really nice, Ru. I’m sure it’ll be smashing when it’s done.”
Ru’s eyes stayed on Estrid, narrowing slightly.
“The way she moves...” they said lowly, “I’ve never seen anyone else move like that. Even other dancers. It...seems like something that shouldn’t just disappear into the void, when the moment is over...like everything does, sooner or later. I’ve tried to photograph her before, but it doesn’t capture the movement. Even when I take a lot of still pictures one right after another, or when I actively try to get shots that blur, it doesn’t work. And magical photographs...hmph! They’re an absolute joke. They deteriorate so easily, and their quality is atrocious.”
Galen smiled sympathetically. “Well, wizards really have only had them for a short while...I reckon they might need a little time to catch up, right?”
Ru scoffed loudly through their nose and mouth, sounding rather like an offended horse. “It’s pathetic.”
They rested their hands behind them on the floor, leaning back slightly.
“So...the only way I could try to capture the way she moves -- to make it last, past that moment, was to draw it. It’s not exactly easy to get her hands right, though,” they added sourly under their breath.
“Hands are every artist’s Achilles’s heel, I think,” said Galen with a quiet laugh.
His green eyes softened. “...You really care about Estrid a lot, don’t you?”
Ru’s face flushed a bit more darkly as they whirled on him with a glare.
“Don’t read too much into it, Stagg. I find her movements interesting. That’s all.”
Despite Ru’s denials, however, Galen thought to himself that Estrid was pretty lucky, to have someone in her life who’d put in so much effort to try to memorialize her in a lasting way. He wondered if Ru even realized just how sweet and selfless of an instinct that really was.

Let’s talk TroPreCure! (^∀^ 🌺)

i’m so stupidly proud of this dumb pun “tropurikyua~”, hahahahaha
Last post of the year and wow is there are lot to be excited for!
I even had to make a list for the stuff I want to talk about and I’m sure I already forgot one or two things but we’ll get to them as we continue to float~ along the wave to February 28th, mmkay? :)
Now for what has peaked my interest so far. And yes, we have to talk about the following first:

1) HealPre the shortest Precure season??
Unless they plan for double features in February (which I doubt but you never know), HealPre is likely going to reach only 45 episodes long instead of the usual 48~50 before TroPre I’m using this shortening of the title for now so if there’s a better alternative, tell me and I’ll switch out begins its broadcast.
Understandable because the producers probably want to get back to their normal scheduling as soon as possible (toy sales, y’know) and I suspect pushing the start of the new season back by a month is the most they’re willing to compromise.
As for me, I’m quite happy about this since HealPre’s lost its hold on my attention a while ago so the sooner TroPre gets here, the better. Though the downside might be a scrambled climax and a rushed, underwhelming ending for HealPre (I dunno if it’s January’s titles that feel a bit messy or if the hiatus is still throwing me off) but whatever. We’ll refresh ourselves with the new blood Cures so it’s all good.

2) Tropical movie announced for Autumn 2021, no All Stars??

First saw this mentioned on Youtube somewhere but it’s all over the fandom forums by now. I mean, HealPre’s movie is set for March, the usual time slot for All Stars release. If Toei intended for there to be an All Stars in 2021, there’s no way they would announce the seasonal movie before it so speculations of them skipping it this year are probably true.
To squeeze it somewhere between March and October-ish would force them to readjust their budgets as well and I don’t think even Toei wants to go through that extra hassle after all the trouble the pandemic’s caused for everyone already. It’s just easier to resume All Stars in 2022.
That, and I think Laura being a major character in TroPre despite not having a Cure title (yet) would make for an awkward situation when the three latest teams gather so perhaps that’s also one of the reasons. But I’ll get back to Laura in a bit.

3) Cure Summer is a RAINBOW Cure
So god help me if I see anyone calling her a Pink Cure.
Yes, she’s the lead Cure for this season. NO, she is not a Pink Cure.
Look, even the official website has a rainbow overlay for her profile pic and text font while everyone else’s respective theme colors are a solid hue:

Therefore, RAINBOW.
In promotional material and merchandising, they’re probably going to advertise her primarily with pink bah and at worst, she might occasionally be labeled as a White Cure with multiple subcolors (her outfit is not pink-dominant) but definitely NOT. PINK.
...also, this goes without saying but f***yea, we finally got a lead Cure practically and unabashedly wearing the LGBTQ flag and you cannot tell me otherwise, Toei!
Own up to it! Declare Manatsu/Cure Summer as the Precure queer icon!

4) Laura = obvious midseason Cure is obvious
First of all, Laura is a babe. I already love her the best and she’s not even Precure yet. <3
Anyways, the set-up is pretty much in the description. Important main character who’s not a mascot, stated to have a self-confident personality and just speaks her mind (oooh, I like~ :D), magical/foreign being from another world looking for Precure to save her home, possesses her own special item(s), has aspirations to become the next Queen (so she’s a princess-candidate or something to that effect, I suppose).
We’ve seen various combinations of these traits in past midseason (and a few starter) Cures so nobody should be surprised when we all guessed that one of the Cures would be a real live mermaid.
The only question is why not just make Laura a Cure from the get-go if she’s introduced to us at the beginning (like Hime or Lala) and having a team of five with no unnecessary extra add-ons later on (like Smile).
Well, there’s a simple answer for that: formula.
Toei is afraid that if they don’t spit out some new animation sequence at the halfway and third quarter points of the show, the kids will lose interest and abandon the series altogether. Which means failed toy sales. Oh nooo... [/sarcasm]
...Yea. 
And this way they can also have Laura available in the Cure lineup for the next All Stars in 2022 instead of making her sit the fight out if we were going to have one in 2021. I’m convinced that’s gotta be one of the reasons. *shrug*

But ok, whatever. Her debut is gonna be later, that’s all. She’s a delayed Cure.  Midseason Cure, same difference.
Moving along to the more important stuff now like what’s her Cure name gonna be, y/y?
Well, knowing Toei, a translation of the term “mermaid” into another language is the most predictable route even though we already have a Cure Mermaid. Not like that ever stopped them from repeating words before (ex. Cure Happy vs Cure Felice). Though if they do go down that road, I hope they opt for the Spanish/Italian “sirena” and not the French “sirène” because the latter sounds too close to how Cure Selene is pronounced in Japanese. And, putting it nicely, we all know Japanese pronunciation of foreign words is as off kilter as can be.
Hell, even the the Portuguese “sereia” sounds aesthetic as hell so it’d be nice if they can just remember there are other languages that exist out there besides Japanese, English and French when making the final decision at the writing table! *stomps foot* >:/
Alternatively, “nereid” or “naiad” are good choices too but they remind me too much of Greek myths and Laura’s from the Grand Ocean which covers more than just a couple of seas (Greece is surrounded by three, btw) so...
I dunno. But whatever it’s gonna be, she’s definitely got a strong association with water and her powers will probably be based on that.

As for theme color, since there’s noticeably no blue or green Cure in the starter lineup, it’s likely she will take up that spot when she debuts around ep 20.
Pink is also open since Cure Summer, again, is technically not a Pink Cure and Laura’s hair and tail fin are hot and light pink respectively but looking at Laura’s design and concept, does anyone seriously believe that?
Her upper torso consists of aquamarine while the body of her tail is definitely some shade of cyan, implying they’re aiming for somewhere around the middle of green and blue on the lighter spectrum.
And yea, I’m aware that green and blue are considered exchangeable in some perspectives with how close some of their shades are to each other but officially, I think Laura’s gonna be grouped with the Green Cures.
Cuz of the hair. If Laura’s gonna keep it the same or a similar shade after transforming, that is. The Blues have always had cool-colored hair so putting Laura in with them might disrupt that harmony whereas if you put her with the few Greens there are (including Parfait), she’d fit right in.
I mean, we’ll see but that makes the most sense, doesn’t it?
On another note, I just want to say that I love how they added frills to her arms instead of letting her elbows go bare naked. It definitely makes her look more like a genuine mermaid than if she didn’t have them (remember, half fish doesn’t mean half the body :P).

5) Magical Items
Frankly, I’m tired of seeing the transformation device being a compact again even though one of the main motifs is make-up this season. But at least, as far as Precure compacts goes, the Tropical one is my favorite cuz of how cute and delightfully colorful its toy version looks! So I guess I’m okay with it.
The Heart Rouge Rod, though? ...I dunno. I think it would’ve been fine without that...straw (?) jutting out at the top. It looks weird, doesn’t it look weird? :S
As for the collectible clip-ons, I can live without those for the rest of my life. Yeesh.

Alright, I can let this year slide cuz Laura (I’m so soft for her, omg) probably won’t be getting legs for 20 weeks so she’s got to move about on land somehow. But unless they’re really thinking about turning this idea of carrying your apartment around in your bag/pocket/purse into a reality (cuz that would be effin’ awesome), please be more creative with your toys.
On the other hand, I’m much more interested in the Ocean Prism Mirror but from what Kusyami (the Precure merchandise reviews I follow on Youtube) said in his latest vid, this is the ED dance item so don’t know if it’ll actually have an relevance to the story or not. But I did hear him mention it having something to do with the Queen as well and since Laura wishes to become Queen, maybe it’ll be important after all? Maybe it’s her transformation device?
That’d be super cool. Let’s continue the trend of the midseason Cure having a different transformation item than the starters. Honestly, we should alternate every other year or two but we’ve gone three seasons with all of them using the same henshin gimmicks up till HealPre and I just want a break from that.

i wrote down some art-related thoughts and tips, inspired by people i follow who occasionally say the sort of things that they wish they were better at drawing but don't really know where to go with it, not like i'm much of an authority or anything and nobody's asked my opinion but, if this is helpful for someone out there, then it's worth writing!
- examine other people's art, especially those that you like, and study which things you actually like about it. you shouldn't directly copy someone else's art, but what you can do is take inspiration or study the details that you enjoy and adapt them into your own style. for practice it's fine to copy someone else, but if you post the final piece, you should mention whose art you referenced in it. also, do the same with art that you find yourself not particularly liking! think about the things that don't make it very good in your opinion and see if you can learn something from that. if you don't like your own art, you can even study what makes it disappointing to yourself. process it a little instead of just going "wow i suck at drawing" and moving on, even if it feels difficult.
- also related to the above: widen your view of how art can be done in the first place, and if you find that you're always drawing one and the same thing, maybe try something different every once in a while. and by this i don't really mean the actual subject matter but small things like, do you always use a black lineart brush? try using colours instead. do you reference fanart from official art? try making your own version instead or reference the style of some other series, go a little crazy with it. do you have a particular style of drawing eyes, or faces in general? play around with shapes and see how it turns out, go more realistic or more cartoony. i sometimes draw noses on characters and sometimes i don't, just kind of depending how it looks like to myself, and i don't draw nostrils because i don't really like the look of two holes in the face. you don't have to stick to just one "truth" with art. (of course it's totally fine to want to draw realistic humans and not the kind of anime stuff i personally do, these are just examples from me and you should focus on the things you like yourself)
- pay attention to shapes, and the fact that sometimes simple is better than adding too much detail. or if you like adding tons of details, then it may be better for the base drawing (e.g. the character under all that detail) to be extremely simple in contrast so that it doesn't look too busy for the eye. when i draw faces, i only really put details in the eyes because i like pretty eyes a lot but leave the rest of the face very simple, which makes the eyes stand out more. again, you don’t need to do that, but it’s something to think about when doing art. there are so many details to every single thing ever and it’s generally better to choose which ones you want to emphasise in art.
- a thing i see relatively often is that people draw in black and white, maybe with pencil on paper, and then lament that their art doesn’t get enough attention. the thing is, making b&w art interesting is much harder than giving it personality with colour, because it won't catch people's eye the same way. to me personally, an artist's use of colour is one of the things that draws me into their stuff (actually even the main thing in most cases), so while black&white art can be really beautiful as well and it's totally fine to want to pursue a b&w art style, i'd still encourage people to learn to use colours. it's much easier to give your drawings character with colours, and if you honestly want more attention (which is a valid thing to want), then i'd especially encourage it. it takes more time, so you may need to get used to the fact that finishing a fairly simple drawing can take 8 hours instead of one, though. at least if you're a slow ass person like me
- and as an addition to the former, there are so many different ways to use colour, so don't limit yourself by thinking there's only one way. you can even make art that's primarily black&white but add an accent colour or two in there and it already changes the feeling of the image completely (i do this sometimes and like that style a lot). or you can have a style that only includes flat colours and no shading or anything at all, you don't need to become a master painter with realistic shadows everywhere if you don’t want to. (if you do want to, then my best advice would be to study photos and paint using them as reference.)
- if you find yourself going, "this artist's colours are so good! i wish mine were like this!" -- why not use similar palettes with that artist then? think about what kind of colours you like and what kind of mood you want to convey in your drawing, bright hues will look completely different from darker or duller ones, blues will look cold and reds warm, some colours pop out more when placed next to another. don’t shade with grey or a darker hue of the exact same colour to make it look more interesting. look up palette websites, or study the colour wheel and pick colours from the opposite or adjacent sides for ideas of colours that go well together. this is the stuff that a lot of tutorials mean by colour theory, and it's not rocket science but actually rather simple when you take a look at the colour wheel. if you don't like how the colours turn out, play around with the hue, saturation, brightness and contrast settings all you want. most of the actual magic you see in a lot of digital art is adding layers with a multiply, overlay etc setting on top, so find those in your drawing software and go crazy with it. (they take a while to learn to use, i have plenty of drawings where i've used them badly, but that's just how learning anything is)
- youtube is full of videos of people doing complete drawings from sketch to finish. they can be a bit much for beginners (sometimes for me as well tbh) but give a good idea of the overall process of creating a full-colour illustration and what phases go into it. to me it's crazy that there's artists who put in the colours first and then do a lineart on top but that's just one simple example of how there's not just one way of doing art.
and just one practical thing that goes into doing digital art, you'll find that there are a million different brushes everywhere and every artist seems to have a “brush set” for different things and you’re supposed to know how to pick which to use yourself. if it's any consolation, i use exactly one (1) brush ever on clip studio paint and draw every single thing with just that one brush. because fuck that noise i don't care

It took another solid two hours of of hiking along the snow covered mountain path before Tim and Lucien finally caught their first up close sight of the exterior of the Bleak Falls Barrows resting at the base of the mountain peak.
Though the stonework was worn down by weather and age, the decorative stone archways that led the way to the Barrow entrance were still an impressive sight to behold. It was both magnificent and ominous at the same time.

"Wow," Tim breathed out.
He could hear the smile in Lucien's voice behind him. "Oh this is wonderful!" he exclaimed as he reached into his backpack and pulled out a leatherbound journal and what appeared to be a type of pencil made of a thin stick of graphite held in a simple, but effective, carved wooden holder. "I couldn't be certain when I saw the Barrow from a distance back on the road between Helgen and Riverwood, but up this close there's no doubt that this place used to be a temple of the Dragon Cult!"
"Dragon Cult?" Tim glanced back at Lucien
"It was a cult of dragon worshipers who were at their height during the Merethic Era about four thousand years ago," Lucien murmured as was sketching and jotting down notes. "They had a huge presence in Skyrim during that time before the Nords rose up and overthrew their dragon overlords."
"Could they be the reason that a dragon attacked Helgen?"
Lucien paused in his note-taking and looked at Tim. "I... don't think so. The Dragon Cult was destroyed midway through the First Era, which came after the Merethic, again several thousand years back, and nearly all dragons were killed with them during the Dragon War. The dragon at Helgen... Well... I think that might be the first sighting of an actual dragon in these lands since that Era."
Tim shrugged. "Ah well." Then he looked back at the Barrow. "Why don't you stay here to finish your notes. I'm going to scout ahead. See if there are any bandits about."

Turns out there were bandits patrolling the exterior of the Barrow. Tim watched the movement of three of them as they paced back and forth beneath the massive stone arches as he hid behind a wall at the base of the stairs. Tim frowned. This was going to be a challenge. Not only did those bandits have the high ground, putting him at a distinct disadvantage, but all three also had bows, which meant if they saw him they could pick him off at a distance.

But Tim had a bow of his own.
Reluctantly, he pulled it off his back and nocked an arrow to the string. Doubt began to creep into his thoughts. He was trained as a Bat, not an Arrow. Though he knew how to use a bow, it wasn't something he ever used extensively like his bo staff. He also didn't have the knowledge yet on how to alter the arrows to make them non-lethal but still precise and functional. Did he even have the skill and precision to shoot one of the bandits from a distance and not kill them?
As one of the bandits paused in their patrol and stood in one place for a moment, Tim brought up the bow and drew the arrow so that the fletching just barely brushed his cheek as he aimed at the bandit. For the first time in forever, he said a brief silent mental prayer for forgiveness if his aim was off before letting the arrow fly.
Unfortunately for the bandit, Tim's aim was off. He had been aiming for the bandit's shoulder, hoping to make it so the man couldn't wield either his bow or the war ax hanging off his waist. But he misjudged the distance and arch the arrow would travel
Instead, the arrow flew far too low and pierced the bandit through his knee, straight through his kneecap. Tim winced at the scream of pain before the bandit lost his balanced, tumbled down the stairs, and knocked himself out along the way. Reflexively, Tim rushed out to check the man to make sure he was still breathing. However, the scream had drawn the bandit's other two compatriots who saw him immediately.
Before he could get to the fallen bandit, Tim saw an arrow just whiz past his face, and he was forced to dive for cover behind a pile of stones. Unable to reach him with their arrows, the other two bandits drew their axes and swords and began to rush down the stairs.
While he was behind cover, Tim swapped his bow for his quarterstaff. As soon as the second bandit was within range, they found themselves with doubled over in pain as the wooden staff swung out and caught them across their stomach. As quickly as he could, Tim followed up by moving out from behind his cover and swept the legs out from under the bandit, causing them to fall to the frozen hard earth with a solid thud.
Before he could follow up and land a blow that was certain to knock the bandit out, the third masked bandit lashed out at Tim with a giant war ax. The world-displaced vigilante tried to block the blow with his staff, but there was too much force behind the heavy metal blade! As soon as it connected with the quarterstaff, the weapon split into two pieces with an explosion of splinters and Tim was knocked backwards to the ground!
Tim could hear a gravelly chuckling from the bandit as he approached to finish the job. The young man looked up to see his attacker raising his axe above his head to land the killing blow. Something shifted in Tim's perception. The image of the bandit was suddenly overlayed by an image of the headsman from Helgen. An icy shard of fear and desperation spiked through Tim as the axe began to fall.
"No!"
Suddenly, there was a moment of blackness in Tim's vision.
Everything was suddenly cold and still.
Slowly, Tim's vision began to clear. He was breathing in ragged gasps. Then he registered that his hands were full of something, and there was a weight bearing down upon his arms. He looked up in in growing horror as he saw an iron sword in his hands, the blade of which was now stained in fresh crimson blood. His eyes followed the trail of blood up the length of the blade until it abruptly ended in the chest of the final bandit.
As the masked bandit fell onto the ground, Tim dropped the sword.

"Oh no... No... No no no no no..." Tim dropped to his knees at the side of the fallen bandit. Frantically, he searched the pouches at his waist and found the one that held several red bottles of healing potion. Then, as quickly as his shaking hands would allow, reached out to remove the bandit's mask from his face.
Tim nearly dropped the potion.
"Croc?!" he gasped as he stared in shock at the unconscious man's reptilian face.

Tim froze for a moment. Thoughts raced through his mind. Killer Croc couldn't be there, could he? How would he get from Gotham to here? Was he hallucinating? Had he finally cracked and lost his mind?
Then he noticed something. He shoved his more panicked thoughts as far down as he could and leaned hard into his more analytical mind.
"His scales are the wrong color," he murmured under his breath. "Croc's are green, and these are brown." Tim took another breath. "Croc is taller, bigger, bulkier... This one's only about as tall as me. This is not Croc." Finally Tim felt the panic begin to subside.
Quickly, he uncorked the bottle and poured the liquid into the reptilian man's mouth. "Please... Please let this work," he whispered as he watched the bandit's throat shift as he swallowed.
The man's shallow breathing began to even out and get a little stronger. When Tim checked the wound through the hole in the bandit's armor, he was somewhat amazed to watch as the awful gaping injury began to mend itself right before his eyes. It appeared he might be alright now.
"Timothy?"
Tim glanced up to see Lucien standing nearby, a very concerned look on his face. "Are you alright?"

Tim set down the bandit's head as gently as he could on cold hard ground. "I think so. Just... caught a little off guard." Slowly he rose to his feet, feeling a little weak in the knees and light-headed. His back and left arm were also throbbing with pain adding to his disorientation. He stumbled a bit as he tried to catch his balance.
Lucien came up and helped to steady Tim. "I should say so," the scholar remarked. "You act as if you've never seen an Argonian before."
"Argonian?"
Lucien nodded. "Yes... They're a race of reptilian beastmen who originate from from the lands of Black Marsh, but they can be found all across Tamriel. Have you never encountered one before?"
Tim looked down at the Argonian as the man began to cough and groan. "Back home I know someone who looked a lot like him," he admitted uneasily. "He... wasn't a good person."
The scholar tilted his head curiously, giving Tim the same appraising look that he had earlier at the earlier bandit's watchtower. "That reminds me. I've been meaning to ask..." Lucien tried to look Tim in the eyes. "Where is home for you anyways? You look like you could be a Breton or an Imperial, but I can't place your accent."
Tim bristled visibly. "I'm no Imperial," he said coldly. Before Lucien could ask any more questions, he distracted himself with the fact that the Argonian was waking up and trying to sit up on his elbows.
"Y-you saved my life," the reptilian man said in a gravelly voice that, thankfully to Tim, sounded nothing like Killer Croc. Though Tim couldn't be sure, the tone of Argonian's voice sounded confused as his gold eyes, with slits for pupils, focused on Tim. "Why?"
Tim's expression softened. "I didn't want you or your people dead," he said simply.
"But I... but we attacked you?"
"I'm no executioner," Tim said. "And I don't know why you and the others turned to crime to survive in this place. Perhaps your reasons are justified, perhaps not? I'm in no place to judge."
The Argonian's pupils went from slits to fully round in an expression Tim assumed could be surprise?
Then Tim motioned his head toward the ruins. "My friend and I are going into the Barrow. Are other bandits inside?"
The Argonian nodded.
"I may not want anyone dead," Tim continued before turning the tone of his own voice lower and foreboding and kneeling so he was nearly nose to nose with the reptilian bandit. "But know that I am not above crippling anyone in order to defend myself and the people under my care." Tim's expression turned cold and menacing, his blue eyes like blades of unmelting ice. "My advise to you and your friends out here... Don't follow us. Just walk away. If I find you in my way again, I will make you regret every life choice you've made up to that point, and I may not have any mercy potions left to spare. Do I make myself clear?"
Once the Argonian nodded again, pupils still blown wide, Tim stood up and looked to the massive doors leading into the Barrow. Then he looked at Lucien, who had been watching the entire exchange with more that same contemplative expression. Whatever questions he had, though, Lucien decided to hold them for a different time as Tim addressed him.
"Did you get enough information for your journal?" Tim asked.
Lucien shrugged. "Sure. I got enough notes about the exterior. Let's move onto the interior."
As they walked away from the bandits, Tim paused to look at the remains of his quarterstaff where it had fallen in pieces. He sighed and walked over them.
"Do you need to borrow my sword?" Lucien offered as he saw the state of Tim's destroyed weapon as they moved up the stairs.
Tim shook his head. "I'll make due."
Then they pushed open the doors to the Bleak Falls Barrows and stepped inside.

Note2: It just so happened that during this playthrough one of the bandits ended up being Argonian along with the usual couple of human races, so I just decided to run with it with the role play.
Note3: I have also added a new mod to allow for more hand-to-hand combat options for Tim. It's called "Way of the Monk - Unarmed Combat" (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17684). One of the aspects I love about this mod is that, with a solid sneak skills, you can get access to both a "Chokehold" ability and a "Knockout Punch" ability! Woohoo! Using this mod in conjunction with another combat mod called "True Spear Combat" (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/10483) allows me to give Tim his actual combat skillset of using both his longstaff and unarmed abilities! True Spear Combat even gives me access to shuriken and throwing daggers, so I can give Tim a ranged attack that has nothing to do with bows.

Hi, Quill! I've been struggling recently trying to get the right images for edits and making sure they carry the theme. I was just wondering if you had any tips on how to make character and location mood boards?
Hello hello!! afhskdjhkdjgh I’m becoming an advice blog amn’t I? (I’m seriously uncertain why you folks think my advice is any good, but I’m honoured! XD)
Okay! So! First off, I’m not actually the best at this myself, but I suppose I can share some strategies that I often use to make my own moodboards!
Choosing Images for Aesthetic Edits
First off, make sure you have a good foundation for your character (or world/location/etc.). Making moodboards can be a great way to get to know your character better and to develop them, but if you don’t know some of your character’s interests or personality already, it can be near impossible to decide on images!
Things to Look For
Here’s a small list of possible things to keep in mind when looking for images to include in your aesthetics! These might help with prompting ideas and such~
For characters:
Hobbies/passions
Favourite colour/colours that represent them
Home environment or where they grew up
Pets
Family/friend/partner relationships
Favourite foods/drinks
Important objects they own
Work/job/rank aspects
Distinguishing physical traits (hair, eye colour, scars, tattoos, etc.)
Quotes that represent them
Wardrobe/clothing style
Super powers/magic type/supernatural attributes
Symbols for their personality
Character archetype they fit or the role they play in the story
And yeah, this one helps sometimes: D&D class
For locations (this is mostly for larger regions, but can be narrowed down):
General natural scenery (flora/fauna, climate, landscape)
Cultures that it mimics/fits
Architecture type
Type of people found there
Activities usually done there
Food
Resources
Industries it’s known for (Mining, fishing, farming, textiles, pottery?)
Tourism attractions (natural or artificial)
Military
Political system (including the leader, how they rule, etc.)
Education and linguistics
There’s tons more to consider, of course, but I hope that gets your brainstorm building!
Other Tips
Still not having much luck?
Try typing in a general term into the search of whatever site you’re using. Look through the results and you might find something that fits! Unsplash.com is a great one for this, I find: my character likes gold, so... gold. Wow, that’s a lot of gold stuff, but also a lot of images that could possibly inspire you!
If you don’t know your character’s hobbies or interests yet, try looking up a list of them and see what ones you think would fit them! Ask games can also be marvelous for sparking ideas~
Did you find a really fitting image, but the colours clash with the rest or don’t fit your character? Try editing the colour of it using photoshop or other editing software! (You can find tons of tutorials for this with a simple search. ^^) There are also plenty of psd colour resources offered on tumblr for free!
If you’re not sure of a colour theme to follow, try browsing sites like Coolors.co for ones to inspire you!
Adding an overlaying texture or a gif overlay can also be a great way of tying the aesthetic together~
Sites to Use
I’m still guilty of using pinterest for quotes and such, but I try to avoid sites like it for images. Here’s some sites that I personally use for finding higher quality, free for use images!
Unsplash.com: Will always be my favourite. Always. This is my go-to and I really only stray from it when I can’t find a specific something I want.
Pixabay.com: I need to start using this one more, in all honesty. It’s really nice.
Pexels.com: I don’t use this much but again I find there’s good quality stuff here~
These are only the ones I’ve personally checked out, but here are a couple other posts that list a bunch of cool sites: 1, 2.

Reason or Meaning of Name: The original name I gifted her was ridiculous (and no, I won’t tell you), so I retconned it when I restarted WoW and updated her character history a year and a half ago.  Valerie as her living-again name was deliberate - it’s common enough not to raise eyebrows and still pretty.  Theona is her mother’s name; Farmer is a wry nod towards having grown up on a farm. {Still true.}
Character’s Nickname/Alias: Val/Vally/Vee {No one really calls her anything other than Val, so, still true}
Reason for Nickname/Alias: Shortening her name, and also distinguishing her from ANOTHER Arcanist Val. {There are like, 20 Arcanist Vals, I’ve come to find, but I don’t really hang in the same circles as any of them, lol.}

Physical appearance
Age:  This body is 30. {Nope; this body is 32 as of Sunday!}
How old does he/she appear: About 30!  {More or less the same, I guess.}
Weight: 125 lbs {Up it to 130. She put on some muscle!}

Body build: Average, if rather underfed.  She could stand a few more pastries and solid meals in her life. {Val looks a lot more healthy these days. Part of it is eating more real food, and a lot of fresh air and exercise.}
Shape of face: I… I dunno, look at Gillian Jacobs up there and you tell me. {Look at CYN, I guess.}
Eye color: Light, fawn brown. {Unchanged.}
Glasses or contacts: Glasses.  For a seer, she’s blind as a bat.  It was completely on purpose. {Changed!  She finagled around until, in Darkshore, she developed a spell she calls Mage Sight which more or less corrects her vision.  It does, however, leave a bright blue glow overlay over her eyes.  She still has her glasses because they correct better but is lazy and Mage Sight is good enough for everything but reading.}
Skin tone: Pale, with freckles popping up on her cheeks, chest, and arms if she spends too long in the dreaded sunlight. {There’s a little more color now, but Ashenvale is shady so she’s not exactly tan.}
Distinguishing marks: Awesome, large starburst-shaped scar above her heart; still-healing scar from an arrow wound on her left calf. {Both still there.  I added a few streaky holy water burns on the tops of her hands and forearms.}
Hair color: Caramel-y dark blonde. {Still accurate.}
Type of hair: Curls (Type 3A, for those playing the home game), and between her chin and shoulders. {Curls still accurate, but it’s longer - mid-back.}
Hairstyle:  Loose, usually.  She sometimes pins it up or french-braids it to get it out of the way. {Accurate.}
Voice: Unexpectedly high and somewhat breathy.  Her voiceclaim is Dana Cardinal from Welcome to Night Vale. {Yup on both points.}
Overall Attractiveness: Fairly?  I dunno, solid 7 if she’s been eating enough and is in a good mood. {Awk. I’m not good at rating these things.}
Physical Disabilities: A slight limp and glasses but nothing more than that. {I probably should have mentioned the massive lack of sensation she experiences here, leaving her with drastically impaired smell and taste and less-severely-but-still-impacted touch.  The limp’s gone now, though.}
Usual Fashion of Dress: Leggings and either a fancy camisole or a tunic layered underneath girly wizard’s robes.  Soft suede boots with heels that are awful for running.  A red, hooded silk cloak with bronze trim. {That cloak is trashed now.  She’s gone more utilitarian since spending time on the front.}
Favorite Outfit: The crimson Tirisfal garb. {STILL TRUE!!!}
Jewelry or Accessories: Val wears a pair of simple pearl studs that belonged to her mother, as well as a moonsteel crescent moon necklace.  Around her wrist is an amethyst necklace on a long chain that’s been looped around several times, and a chain link enamel bracelet depicting the phases of the moon.  {The earrings were given to Hani prior to going back out to Darkshore.  The necklace is still true, and the amethyst gets passed between her and Sino whenever one of them needs good luck.  The enamelled bracelet she has, but hasn’t wore recently.}

How I edit my pictures

Hello! Wow, thank you so, so much @re-writing-h​! I’m really glad you like them! First of all I have to say that I’m using Photoshop and I have no idea how to use other programs, sadly... But I’ll show you some of my tricks anyway :) I’m not very good at explaining things, but I’ll try. For the overlay gif tutorial, I’ll link you to this post here!

If you want to create colourful edits, Selective Color is your best friend! This tutorial requires some basic Photoshop knowledge. Also make sure your pictures are of high quality. I mostly use Unsplash and Pixabay to find good ones. The pictures you find on pinterest are often low quality and already edited, which makes you editing them even harder! 
Here’s an example from an edit I posted the other day:

The first step I do is play around with the Brightness/Contrast and Curves. (I once saw someone say that pulling the Curves in a slight S-form is the best way to go, just like you see in the icon itself).

Those two help a lot to brighten the pictures and make them clearer and sometimes even less grainy. The settings really depend on the pictures though! If your pictures are really bright/pale to begin with, reducing the Brightness and adding Contrast makes them look sharper. (Like you see in the screenshot below)

These settings bring me to this result:

The next step would be to add Selective Color layers. And I use a lot of those! In the example above I used 4 layers but usually I use between 5-10. So keep that in mind. Add as many as you like. But don’t pull them to +100 or -100 in just one layer! Most of the time it will only add noise and won’t make the colours as smooth. Rather, add few colours and build them up with layers! The only colour this method usually works with is Blue/Cyan, but still you have to be careful.

Black will give your pictures much more depth, as you see above. The before picture looks rather pale but adding Black often makes a huge difference! But only use the last one. (Make sure the settings are on Absolute and not Relative)

The next thing I focus on are the colours. Which stand out the most? Is it blue? To intensify it, choose Blues and Cyans in the Selective Color setting and change them as you like. Again, how much you add really depends on what pictures you have.

Do the same for other colours! Above you also see a little bit brown/yellow in the picture by the rocks and bridge(?). To highlight it more, go to Reds and/or Yellows and pull the arrows until you are satisfied.

Fun fact! You can also change colours. Want purple instead of blue? No problem! Just change the settings to your liking. Pulling Cyan to the left side (-) and Magenta to the right (+) will turn the blue to purple. It doesn’t always work as well with other colours. But you could also change yellow to pink.

If you still want to add more intensity, look for the Vibrance settings!

In total, I used 9 layers to colour the picture above. I also always use the Exposure setting to dull the picture a little without loosing too much of the colours.

The fact that it has probably taken me over two months to answer this is just.. very shameful to say the least. I’m so so sorry it took me so long to get to this (going to have to partially blame my OCD going a bit haywire for specific things on social media for that, but mostly it’s just me saying I’ll finish this ask game tomorrow and then forgetting to do it. Also I might be a teeny tiny bit daunted by all of your edits because.. have you seen them?? Literally spectacular in everyway!) Before I get into my mini analysis, I just want to say that no matter how many times I’ve seen one of your edits on my dash (and your style is so distinctive and “you” that I can tell almost immediately that it’s you) I’m always filled with such awe. You are one of the most talented gifmakers on here, without a doubt. There doesn’t seem to be anything you can’t gif and magically turn into some stunning colourful masterpiece, and your colour combinations are unreal. When I first started experimenting with colours, yours was one of the tutorials I used to look at for advice and inspiration, so the fact that you sent me this is just ajskdshfk. I have to once again say I’m so sorry for the massive delay in this, I promise it wasn’t intentional x
Here are my top five (this is A LOT more than five oop)
large rainbow gifsets (1, 2, 3, 4 )- everytime I see a gifset like one of these, I take a moment to just appreciate the gifmaker behind it. Colouring 6-10 gifs for a single set is hard enough, but colouring this many is just unfathomable, and just takes pure dedication that I truly admire. The way you have gotten each of these gifs to match together and flow in a gradient so flawlessly is just beautiful. The shifts between shades or so seamless, and even though in a lot of the small gifs you’ve chosen there is a character present, in no way has your colouring effected the individual themselves (that doesn’t really make sense aha, what I’m trying to say is that the fact none of the people are slightly altered towards a hue matching their background colour is amazing!) I especially love 2, simply because there’s such a bright and beautiful contrast between the darkness of a lot of the scenes with the splash of bright colour that you’ve added (and I also love it because.. come on, it’s rainbow Malec. What’s not to love??) The fact that NONE of these have over 10k notes is a travesty, so if you ever see me reblog these multiple times just ignore me because if it was up to me these would be getting 1k daily. Also the fact that 3 & 4 are based on single movies is just... unbelievable.
small rainbows made up of larger gifs (yeah.. this title is sh*t but my brain stops working after 5pm so this is the best I’ve got) (1, 2) - you might be wondering why I did not group the two rainbow styles as one, but I simply could not. These are so HQ, and just downright stunning. I mean, there isn’t really any other way in which I can describe these because once again you have exceled at colouring. That shade of green is gorgeous, and the fact that I had to slowly scroll up and down these edits countless times just to really take in your selection of gifs and how you managed to make the colour pop on every single one is very telling. The fact that the Killing Eve one consists of a lot of characters close up once again is such an example of how good you are at colouring.
pastel (1, 2) - not only can you do bright & vibrant gifs but you can also make some that elude a pastel aesthetic? Who did you sacrifice to get this talent?? (asking for a friend.. of course). I love how almost soft these colourings look, especially that Harry & Hermione gif within the HP one. The colours chosen compliment each other so well.
colour combinations (1, 2 , 3, 4, 5) - I feel like these are your signature style? I see a set containing 2+ colours, one that is vibrant and masterfully coloured, and I instantly think “this is something alice would do”. I love love love these sets with a passions. The fact that for your three colour combinations, you often choose two colours/shades that are very similar (such as cyan & a dark blue) and contrast it with a complementary colour (such as yellow) is just AMAZING! I simply cannot get over how much of an aristic eye you have when it comes to where colour should be within a scene. Literally, never in my wildest dreams would I ever be able to achieve anything as stunning as this.
gif effects (1, 2, 3, 4 , 5) - so, not only can you colour spectacularly, you can also do things like overlays/blending and text effects just as well?? Could you spare some talent please?? All jokes aside, these just solidify how extensive your knowledge of ps really is. The fact that you isolated the yellow in that Magnus gifset is just unreal, and your choice of having mainly black & red in the other set adds such a beautiful contrast and really highlights the text. The mirror effect/multiple versions effect in 4 is also so creative, and the overlays in 5 are just wow! Way to make me feel all emotional.
SPECIAL MENTIONS: the gradients that you sometimes do (as shown here, here & here ) are gorgeous. I love how each time you’ve picked such different gradients to do, and the green to yellow HP one is just *chef’s kiss* such lovely shades chosen. Thank you for sending this in, I’m sorry for the waffle and the fact that a lot of this probably doesn’t even make sense?
