Guide to Penalty Box: Sissy Lore, Character Relationships, Bits, History

i reread all of penalty box so you don’t have to! this post is mainly for my benefit, but also for anyone new to the series <3

General Masterlist — 22-23 Season — 23-24 Season

Sissy

Basic Things About Her:

She is NOT legally a Hughes! She grew up with them and they took her in when they moved to Michigan for Jack when he went to USNTDP. They call her their sister, she calls them her brothers, and calls Jim and Ellen mom and dad

Her birth parents were neglectful and mentally abusive. She often stayed at the Hughes house even in elementary school. They put a bed in their game room for her before the move where she got her own room

She is an event planner and has her own business!

Very, very obsessed with The Hunger Games series

She will quote it, reference it, and force everyone to watch it any chance she gets

She's a runner when she's drunk!

The whole group has air tags they use for parties because of this, and even then someone is normally physically attached to her

A story of her running away is in Cruel Weather (Part Two)

She '146' tattooed on her wrist. The 1 is for Trevor, the 4 is for Quinn and Luke, and the 6 is for Jack (and later, Jamie)

She'll joke around with Jack if he gets her on her nerves that the 6 is only for Jamie now

She has the date she moved in with the Hughes's on her collar bone in Roman numerals

She's a sleepy girl! Can't get ahold of her? She's most likely sleeping

She has many sons. Most of the UMich team 101 is a fatherless child, but some have fathers!

Fatherless children: Dylan, Mark, Adam, Luca, Seamus, and Rutger (Fathered children are listed under their father)

She's a bitter! Everyone is used to it, but any time it happens for the first time with someone new, someone has to explain that it's her little deranged way of showing love. Ethan will stick his arm out if she bites Luke (or anyone) to demand love

She goes under people's shirts when she's overwhelmed with emotions. When she does it, you know she trusts you

Sissy & Co are big fans of game nights and she is very, very competitive! They have monthly game nights in whatever way can

Every teammate, on all the teams, adore her and she loves them so much

She gives the teams (mainly the Ducks, obviously) good bags after each game! The more she learns at each player, the more personal the bags

She calls Troy and Dani Terry mom and dad, and she also calls Shatty mom

She's a huge Dallas Stars fan! Her favorite is Robo, and she always (with slim exceptions like if Quinn and Trevor etc play each other) flies to see any of her friends play against them.

She will drop everything if anyone, anyone needs her

She's terrified of storms

She's picky about who gets to call her Sissy and will fight over it.

Sissy exceptions: Dylan because he's known her so long, Cole gets a once a month pass, and Spencer Knight can anytime

Gives creative insults and has no filter

She's a Pink Whitney girly

She has weekly face times with Petey and Matty

She's so clumsy. Extremely so. She is frequently bruised because of it

She's really touchy and will cuddle and fall asleep on anyone

She's a Slytherin

She keeps scrapbooks! For literally anything and everything!

She loves poetry, and frequently uses Atticus poems

Random Lore:

She will leave at any given moment and tell no one. And not just to go out, she'll hop on a plane to see any of her boys. She won't even tell the person she's coming to see. She'll just show up. None of this out of spite, she's just forgetful

Once, she missed Quinn and spontaneously got on a plane to go see him while Trevor was gone without telling anyone. Not Trevor, not Quinn, no one. There was a big freak out. (This was not the first time)

She rented a minivan out of spite during the 2023 development camp so that she could take some of the Ducks boys out after it to get them know them better (it did not take long for the under 20s to call her mom)

In high school, she made her own NTDP hoodie with Jack's, Trevor's, Cole's, and Alex's numbers on the back and wore it every game

She'll occasionally give out gold star stickers (she's basically pavloving them) and once Jack annoyed her and she took his back

She gets her boys a trophy for their first goals of the season

There's a yearly tradition where the day before training camp begins for everyone, Sissy and the Hughes boys (and whoever wants to join) get together to work out together. Sissy is forced to participate but she does not do it for long before she taps out

Brock calls her Princess Hughes and she calls him her Blonde Princess

Frequent Gags:

She gives, and receives, penalties of various minutes for random things. It started from the Shoulder Check Showcase where Trevor did not get a tripping penalty (when he def should have)

Putting someone on probation

Telling someone they aren't friends/sons/etc for a random amount of minutes

Teasing between anyone is done if a "big" word is used. College dropout jokes are made

Random hashtags

Sap is said a lot. At any given opportunity. No one can stay serious for long. Also Simp, but less frequently

"Who's Sissy's least favorite Hughes" "Quinn" (this a gag with random commenters)

Various contracts will be mentioned. Mainly the Best Friend Contract and the Princess Treaty. I have no real explanations or full components of said contracts

Trevor protesting not being able to call her Sissy

Any mentions about high school or senior year. It's all a mystery. It is frequently said that she was crazier.

Most common insult is human dildo

She'll occasionally create the comment section herself and tell the boys to say nice things or specific things

Ducks: She rotates between Trevor's and Jamie's

Ducks vs Canucks: Trevor, Quinn, and Jamie have to play air hockey to decide. If there's no time before, they play iMessage games

Ducks/Canucks vs Habs/Kings: Trevor's or Quinn's

Devils vs Canucks/Ducks: Quinn's or Trevor's

Devils vs. Habs/Kings: Jack and Luke play rock, paper, scissors

Habs vs Kings: Alex and Cole play iMessage games

Panthers vs Anyone: Matty and Spencer play rock, paper, scissors when Spencer is playing. Otherwise, she wears Matty's (except for Canucks and Ducks)

Trevor

Nicknames: Z-Baby, Sweet Boy

He had a crush on Sissy since the moment her saw her

First Date: March 16, 2018 (Junior Year)

They also say their first real kiss was that day, since the other two were practically forced by their friends

Officially Dating: March 22, 2018

First time they said I love you: July 18, 2018

Engagement Date: April 14, 2023

They'll cuddle in any way possible (post on gen. masterlist)

Sissy will "train" with him. And by train I mean she's more like his personal cheerleader, but she'll do some things with him on a lower level

Big PDA couple

They'll sleep anywhere when they're drunk. Counters, tables, closets, horizontally on the bed, anywhere. It phases no one anymore

Sissy will take any and all of his clothes, so all of their clothes are mixed together in their closet. She'll steal clothes from anybody, so sometimes he's accidentally put on someone else's hoodie with their perspective team on it

There's a tradition on his birthday where everyone (that can be there) has a sleepover in the living room. They make a giant fort and watch movies and it's pure chaos

They have matching tattoos of otters on their hands so that when they hold hands, it looks like the otters are

They call each other sweet girl and sweet boy

He kisses her to wake her up. She calls it "Disney Princess style"

Leo is their first and only adopted son

Quinn

Nicknames: Quinny Baby, Quinny, Huggy, Quinnjamin

He's not only her big brother, but he's also Sissy's best friend in the entire world

They have a Best Friend Contract

There is a rule that everyone knows that they do not let go of each other until they're both ready. No one else is allowed to touch her, and no one can take her away from him. Not even Trevor

Her going under shirts started with him (blurb: here)

Her and Quinn's son is Cole McWard! (blurb: here)

Trevor asked him for permission before he asked Sissy out. He's officiating their wedding, so it's like it has come full circle. (Fic: here)

She cries every time he leaves, especially after games when she barely gets to see him

He is a professional "Sissy catcher" because she will stand on surfaces that are not meant for standing on

He's the one that bought her Robo jersey

She gave him a "Best Big Brother In The Universe" trophy when they were kids and he still has it

He has a list of random things Sissy says when she's lovey clingy drunk

They officially became best friends when she was in 4th grade

Before Trevor, she had a boyfriend in freshman year. The breakup was hard for her because it was her first one, so Quinn drove down from UMich to be with her for a couple of days

She’ll call him anything under the sun, but she often uses Quintin when she’s upset or in pain (sometimes randomly). She used it a lot in middle school

Jack

Nicknames: Jacky Boy, Soulmate, Howdy Rowdy, Twin

She met everyone through him. They were in kindergarten together and were thrilled to live near each other

They have the same birthday (hence twins)

Jack often jokes he's older than her because he was born 4 hours and 36 minutes before her

They tend to make bets. Everyone had an "intervention" to stop them and limit to Ducks vs Canucks games, but they do not listen

They spontaneously went to Vegas in the peak of the bets starting. Only Trevor knew.

They have a special connection. They know what the other is saying with just a look. They call it "Hugheslepathy"

Sons: Luke and Ethan (He's her first officially adopted son)

Luke is a son because he accidentally called Sissy mom during the one month her and Jack dated (they decided it was too weird and broke up) (it was before the move)

She gives him a painted puck every year on their birthday, and he gives her a charm for her charm bracelet. When he knows it's full, he gets her a new one. (Full imagine: Sweet Sixteen)

She's changing her middle name to Rowden after her and Trevor get married to match him

They will wrestle each other, but he's always careful to make sure she doesn't hit her head on anything with how clumsy she is

They are THE unhinged duo

Sissy cried and slept in Jack's bed for weeks after Quinn left for USNTDP

Luke

Nicknames: Lukey Moosey, Moose, her son

He was the one that first called her Sissy

She's very protective of him and always feels the need to stay strong around him. When they were younger, she'd hold it together if she was upset or hurt in front of him. She also did it in the hospital after the car crash.

Just like with Quinn, if he needs her physical touch, she doesn't let go until he's ready. It's just a rarity.

Luke walked in on Sissy and Trevor making out during the spring break they first got together. He had a talk with Trevor alone warning him not to hurt his sister, despite him being so young at the time

Jamie

Nicknames: Jamie Baby, Ex Husband

Him and Sissy are very close and very supportive of each other

When he got hurt, she left the stands to be with him. She stayed home from games while with him to take care of him when it was the roughest

They used to be "husband and wife" and she calls him her favorite ex-husband

They had silicone rings and everything

They used to joke that Trevor was their kid (he hated it) until they got engaged

It took him a while to fully warm up to her because he's so quiet, but they easily became as close as she is to the other guys when he did

When Sissy and Trevor fall asleep on the couch, he'll carry her up to bed and then wake up Trevor so he can go to bed himself

When he learned why she goes under people's shirts, she made sure to tell her that it was okay for her to do it to him

He sat on the floor and held her hand while she did an online interview to work an important event because she was anxious about it

It was her idea for Jamie to move in with her and Trevor

Cole

Nicknames: Coley Woley

Known as Best Friend Number Two (fic: here)

She'll call him Best Friend Number One to mess with Quinn sometimes

Sissy's man of honor for the wedding

Has a once a month pass to call her Sissy

They've kissed, but it was more of as a joke. Full story on the Engagement post

Sissy, Cole, and Alex have a yearly "Best Friend's Weekend" with no boyfriends/girlfriends or brothers. It started in high school

In high school, Sissy would often go to Cole and Alex's room to smoke, vent, etc

Him and Alex 100% knew Sissy liked Trevor before she really knew herself

Sissy is the nicest to him at all times. He hardly gets the aggressive but loving teasing and belittling (also out of love)

Just she like was there for Jamie, she flew out to see Cole and help out after his surgery in the 22-23 season

Alex

Nicknames: Turc, Turcs, Lexi

Her main smoking partner after high school (especially since he lives so close)

He stole her bong and will not give it back

Sissy, Alex, and Cole have weekly movie nights where they facetime and use watch parties

Once when she fell asleep on him, Quinn threatened him to not move even though he had to pee until Alex was "about to pee on her"

He calls her Girly Hughes

Matthew Tkachuk

Nicknames: My Rat, Matty Ratty, Matty, Rathew (rare)

Sissy had the biggest crush on him in middle and high school and talked about him all of the time

She'll often joke to Trevor that she'll him for Matty when he's on her nerves (lovingly)

She begged Quinn to invite him to her sixteenth birthday party and she got so excited she fell over the couch (fic: here)

He calls her Little Mouse (occasionally sissy)

They have adopted Mackie as their son! It happened when the team went to Universal Studios (Oct. 4, 2023) when Sissy flew out to them without telling anyone (again)

She facetimed him angry when she found out through twitter he played with a broken sternum (and also cried. she's a crier)

She flew out there after and yelled at Brady in person

Spencer Knight

Note: he has not been in the series until the summer before and preseason of 23-24

Nickname: Spency

He had a big part in the egging on for Trevor and Sissy to have their first kiss at a party (full story: Knight in Shining Armor)

He has Sissy pass, and it's not limited. There's not really an explanation for it, but he wasn't as close in the group like the others, so she let him as a way for them to be closer

She was THRILLED when he got drafted to the Panthers, and called him when Matty got traded saying that he was going to love "Her Rat"

She flew to Boston without telling anyone for his first game during Trevor’s rookie year. That’s what started her thing of randomly going to see someone without telling anybody

Hughes Childhood/HS Things

When Quinn first went to USNTDP, they all would have facetime sleepovers. Quinn built his own fort in his dorm, and Jack, Luke, and Sissy built their own. This is still done today, but anyone can be involved

Forts are a big thing for them. They built a fort at any given opportunity (and still do)

They have a yearly "Brothers Weekend" with Sissy where it's just them four

Quinn walked her to class in elementary school. He always made sure her hair was how she wanted before he left to his own class

He gave her hoodie when he left while she was in middle school so he was still "walking her to class"

There's a yearly twister game at the Lake House every summer and has been since they first started spending summers together

"Hugheslepathy" isn't just for Jack and Sissy, theirs is just the strongest. They can all practically read each other's minds

Quinn officiated a wedding between Sissy and a poster of Finnick Odair. Everyone was forced to attend. Luke was the flower boy.

What in Hell is Bad?: First impressions the day after launch

It is the day after launch now. It has not been a full 24 hours as of when I have started writing this post, but I want to give my first impressions of the game; the good, the bad, the ugly.

I will not be holding the server overload against PrettyBusy, especially since that is a common launch day problem with games and they have been doing their best to fix it. Instead, I want to look at the actual content and gameplay.

The Good

There are a ton of Day 1 goodies that make it easy to jump into the game and get going as soon as possible.

Duplicates are automatically converted into an item called tealeaves that you can use to boost/evolve a unit. The unit is not automatically strengthened, but you are not required to go digging through all your units to merge the duplicates manually. There is also no additional cost to evolving a unit, so you can merge them immediately with little worry.

The comics between the loading screens really are a blessing. They are so charming and funny and give a little more insight into some of the characters.

You can, like any decent gatcha, put character's you've obtained on the homescreen and tap them for dialogue that gives insight into who they are. Find my slightly troubling first encounter below.

The combat is smooth. I personally have never played a tower defense type gatcha before, but I find this combat easy to understand, plan, and utilize. I do have an issue with it, but I will list that later.

The Bad

The biggest thing I noticed, the thing that leaves me feeling disappointed, is that the male MC is not implemented well. The male MC options appears to only change the MC's pronouns, but nothing about the actual descriptions of the MC. The game still describes MC having breasts and wetness between the legs, which are the traits of a female MC. If you want to play a trans!MC (like my Dallas), that may please you. Or it may not. It depends how your MC/you view your gender and what terms you choose to use for your anatomy. My point is that the male MC is simply a pronoun change and not much more. Even then, the game sometimes uses the wrong pronouns. I have had multiple moments where the game referred to Dallas (my he/him MC) as she/her, daughter of Solomon, said he and Minhyeok were opposite genders (when they both identify as men).

I love the rainbow bar giving me bonus goodies in the Adore function but... It is legitimately hard to see the bars when those items go flying everywhere. I have to be extra careful because I don't know when the left bar is getting too high.

You cannot replay a story section without using AP. Honestly, this is a real let down. Having to use your limited AP to reread a story is sad. I want to go back and reread sections I've already done without worry. It's for memories and fun. I don't mind paying AP to unlock them, but rereading them is a different matter. Especially given how far apart each story section is. It will be hard to refresh my memory if I take a break from the game for any reason.

Do you know where to find the friends menu? Because I do not. I found it, but I had to go through a series of convoluted pathways. Even then, I don't have a friend code or codes to add my friends. Which is strange considering there is a mission about adding friends and sending presents.

The Ugly (quality of life)

The actual battle maps are... Repetitive. There are often multiple battles in a row and they will have the same layout as the one before them. This often makes it so you can use the same units and arrangement you did on the previous map for the current one. This makes the battles easy to plan, but tedious to do.

The comics between loading screens will vanish automatically when the game is ready. I personally wish the game would prompt me to click to continue because my game loads so quickly that I rarely get to read them. If not a click to continue, then a separate menu where I can read them without worrying they will vanish before I get the chance to enjoy them.

Not sure if my game glitched during the overload, but my first Hell-oh! Talk vanished without a trace. The second one I received is still there, so I want to say it was a glitch, but I cannot be certain so I am putting it here.

It appears that tealeaves (the evolution item) can only be used 5 times. After you use it for the fifth time, you seem to be unable to do anything. Yet I am still gathering tealeaves, so I am unsure what to do with all these extras I am acquiring.

A personal gripe of mine, is that it take 5 greater keys of Solomon to draw once (50 for a 10x). You need 3 lesser keys of Solomon for 1 draw (30 for a 10x). I have always preferred a 1:1 ratio when it comes to drawing because it makes it straight forward and easy to plan what I will need.

There is no way to raise a character's level more than one at a time. If you want to level up a character 10 times, you have to hit the level up button 10 times. It would be nice if they gave us a faster way to do multiple level ups quickly.

Sometimes my chats will have these random empty boxes and I feel that is missing dialogue that I really want to see.

When I go back to check my previous messages to reread them, I notice that the options are sometimes not what I actually chose. This picture is the same section as above, but you'll notice Leviathan's dialogue changed. That's because, for some reason, the game saved my answer as being the other one. Notably, I think it always defaults to whatever option 1 is.

(this one is from 🪰 anon because I haven't seen it yet) In that same vein... you cannot control the speed of messages. That is detrimental when you are play one of the plot relevant text conversations. If it progresses faster than you can read you will simply miss it. A function to change the speed of the texts would be a nice addition.

You have to open boxes one. at. a. time. It is a very slow process when you have upwards of 10+ boxes.

Random Stuff I Noticed:

Ppyong refer to class five angels as Vultures. Not sure if this is a mistranslation of Virtues (the actual fifth highest rank of angel) or if PB decided to use unique names for their game.

hey! If you’ve read it, do you have any thoughts on rumble fish? I’m really curious how other people viewed it and how they felt about the story, it’s one of my favourites!

i haven't read it in YEARS so i started rereading it today so i could give you a well thought out answer, but after reading a few pages i already want to talk about it LMFAO

idk how to word this....i love the book, but i just noticed how rusty-james, ponyboy, and byron are all kinda the same? as narrators? specifically pony and rusty -- just the way se writes their inner monologue is like......The Same to me

but anyway, from what i remember when i first read it motorcycle boy made me soo mad lol and i didn't really know what to think about rusty. similar to pony, he's probs not the most reliable narrator (he flat out says he has a bad memory, which pony admits to as well), but his outlook on his life experiences and how he reacts is like..the opposite of pony. while i was reading it today i wondered if rusty would be an example of how dallas was at 14, but idk....i'm really glad you sent this tho bc i've been meaning to reread it and you gave me the motivation!

what are your thoughts on the book? i will give you a better answer when i finish it tho I PROMISE (also...you have an absolute FIRE url)

The Magic Trick You Didn't See

@ariaste I just finished reading your analysis. Interesting. Not sure I'm completely on board with your primary hypothesis, but you raise some very interesting points. Kudos for doing it.

I do have a few places where my thinking diverges from yours though.

First, on Aziraphale and Angel now-Crowley's meeting in Before the Beginning: I think the primary purpose of this scene was to establish that Crowley still possesses a Tool of Creation (that in S1 we assumed was merely a part of his exploded Bentley) and that this will be important in the denouement. He KISSES it, for goodness' sake. That, and of course that Angel now-Crowley was a joyful and precious innocent who didn't deserve his fate.

Go back to S1E5 when he mentions Alpha Centauri and "I worked on that." We are also given the distinct impression that Crowley was an angel of considerable rank and power. Seeing Crowley in Heaven with Muriel and the way he was treated by the leadership-can I get a "deferentially" here?-is a setup for the reveal of his identity. There are files! Aziraphale can request them! Aziraphale finding out the truth is to me the macguffin that will 1) make him realize that heaven is not the place of "truth, light and good" and 2) catalyze whatever action that brings the tale to its conclusion.

When Crowley interrogates Jim-the "It hurts!" "I KNOW! Do it anyway!" and "Yeah, like the places where the furniture used to be" both strongly indicated to me that Crowley was speaking from experience-that he had had his memory wiped when he Fell-and has recovered some, but not all of it. Hence the offer of a hot chocolate. Empathy. (I think this what he meant by "Ask him properly.")

Later, when he tries to explain Gravity to Jim, I got the feeling that that was one of the places where the furniture used to be. (And also not remembering Saraquiel and Furfur).

Second, in the story of Job, it's being told directly from Aziraphale's point of view, that's why I assumed, in his recollection, that Crowley Bildad the Shuhite was wearing cool shades. And this is also where Aziraphale makes reference that he knew the angel Crowley used to be. Before the Garden of Eden. And Crowley says "the angel you knew is not me". Rather harshly, I thought.

Currently rereading "the Crow Road" and annotating it. There do seem to be some compelling parallels so far. Makes me wonder when Muriel will get to Aziraphale's journals. Like you, I suspect that's where we're going next. I can't figure out the timeline, though. It seems like the next scene has to take place many years from now.

This is getting too long so I'll wrap up by saying that I'm convinced that NG would not foist on us a plot device that wraps up S3 like Bobby "It was all a dream" Ewing from the last season of Dallas. It would be a violation of his own writing ethos and his commitment to doing something that would make Terry proud. The Metatron is literally a Deus ex Machina, but I don't think that NG would rely solely on him-or that technique-to conclude the story.

We all want our heroes to get their happy ending. But knowing Neil's knack for the twist in the storyline, I' don't think I'm not sure that it will look like what we think it will.

Zelena Mills

Like her sister, Zelena likes her books with a glass of wine - but her glass contains rosé. Zelena likes a story with a strong female lead, especially if they take a kingdom from a corrupt leader - maybe they find love along the way? I think she would have enjoyed Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford.

Ruby

Ruby listens to celebrity memoirs and biographies. She is currently halfway through Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard by Tom Felton. She usually prefers the ones by female comedians, they have a way of expressing things that she feels but could never quite describe as cleverly.

She has a lot of reference books around for drawing and illustrating graphic novels. She reads and writes graphic novels and is currently reading the Sandman comics.

Dorothy

Dorothy likes a good hometown, closed-door romance and the classics, she is carrying around her much-loved copy of Pride and Prejudice as she finishes her annual summer reread of it. It is fraying, has tabs sticking out, highlighted pages, and her thoughts scribbled in the margins; but, she can't bear to replace it.

Mulan

I think Mulan has a stack of what my mum would term 'serious' books. She has Forces of Nature by Professor Brian Cox, she has a pile of philosophy books and a stack of books on the art of silence and meditation. But, she has a beautifully illustrated edition of her favourite fairy tales from her childhood stashed in her nightstand that she reads on those days when the world feels a bit too much.

Lady Bell

Lady Bell is an avid Nora Roberts / JD Robb reader. Her favourite is, of course, the In Death series because Eve Dallas and Roarke feel like her close friends and she has the new ones (which Nora does like twice a year, which is insane and impressive) preordered. Every time one is released, Tink rereads the whole 50+ book series over again.

My TBR pile is a bit ridiculous at this point. It has gotten worse lately since I have paused reading books to focus on writing my CSSNS fic and making sure that I don't fall too far behind on my CS fic TBR list. (To my great shame, I haven't finished a book since returning from France earlier this year. This is the longest break in reading that I can recall ever having taken, but those CS fics are so good! So, so good!)

ANYWHOOSIES... I hope you find some in these recs that you enjoy. I am a sucker for a story. I would say the way I described Killian's reading habits most matches mine. I read by mood, which is directed by the weather, the time of year, my head space, my workload, my the kind of attention energy that I have, etc. I tend to read YA Fantasy/Romance, Fantasy/Romance, Paranormal Romance, Grimdark, Dark Romance, Rom-Coms, gothic horror... it is all over the place.

Reading Shades of Magic by the incredible VE Schwab always feels like coming home. (I was going to give you a favourites list but it got a bit out of control... even for me.)

Oh god, this one is really hard for me; I like all of them 😭

1. Probably Ponyboy? I post way more about Dallas (lord help me), but I find Pony way more loveable. Like, he's such a little shit, but he's also hilarious in his own 14-year-old way, and I found him the most relatable when I read the book.

2. Dallas -- As bad as i want to place him at 7th, I'd feel like a liar because of everything I've drawn of the guy. Realistically, I'd DESPISE him, but I find him so fascinating as a character. It's like looking at a disease under a microscope. He's just such a huge mess. It's also probably because of Tim/Dally LMAOOO

3. Two-Bit -- he's funny. I also love it when I find those fics that take into account his alcoholism and deadbeat behavior. They either make the most depressing thing ever or write a really nice development arc. Peeling back that layer of humor to see everything that guy is hiding is probably one of my favorite things to do/see.

4. Darry -- This guy has so much shit going on at 20, and everything between him and Pony is so interesting. He also reminds me of my own brother (😭). However, the woobification of him kind of kills it for me.

5. Steve -- I don't think I've talked about him enough, but the fact there's not much elaboration on him gives people a good amount of creative freedom, which I'm a huge fan of. Ofc, I still wish we had more about him. Plus, Imagining his aftermath of Vietnam + the whole deal between him and Ponyboy really sells me.

6. Sodapop -- I know we do see more of him in the book than Steve, but I guess he didn't interest me as much? Don't get me wrong, he's a great character with a good amount of depth, but I genuinely like Steve more. The thing about Vietnam also applies to him though.

7. Johnny -- I'm so sorry. I don't know why, but I never paid him enough attention and I probably should reread the book for this one. I do think he's really funny because the idea of him getting away with sass is just too good. I also think Ponyboy's narration definitely distorted his character in the book (no. 1 perpetrator of Johnny woobification honestly).

14. Tell us your 5 headcanons you basically see as canon.

1. Johnny is really sassy; he's just able to get away with it because it's him. This frustrates Ponyboy to no end.

2. Ponyboy becomes one of those semi-pretentious lit/English majors. His main reaction to Soda's letter was the spelling, and he seems the type to become a teacher or journalist.

3. I know S.E. specifically stated this wasn't canon, but Soda and Steve going to Vietnam is stuck in my head forever. I find it so interesting (heartbreaking), and the opportunities with this is endless.

4. The Shepards are POC. I don't know why, but I always envisioned them like this, and the fanart kind of just fueled it.

5. Darry used to get into all sorts of shit when he was younger. I mean, he was a regular kid at some point too! Probably nothing too bad though.

17. Are there any criticisms or salt you have with the book?

Not necessarily? I'd have to give it a reread, but there wasn't anything that particularly annoyed me. I guess I wish we saw more of some characters, but it makes sense why they weren't included as much because of the story's focus.

Logan International Airport was buzzing like a crazed beehive. Announcements of gates being changed or flights being delayed or canceled coming over the speaker system at the boarding gates around her. Tessa sat by her flight’s gate watching as families, couples and single travelers, like herself, frantically walked by occasionally stopping and looking at the departures screen to get the latest information on their flights.

None of it was good news, her flight out was delayed for the second time. She hoped it wouldn’t be delayed for a third time or worse canceled, Tessa was counting down the minutes of boarding and getting out of the frigid cold of Boston and heading towards the warmer climate of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It had become an odd family tradition of the Martinez’s, a few years ago, swapping the warm layered clothes and holiday drinks for bikini’s, flip flops and margaritas.

It would be a Christmas without Ethan, her request had been approved but this year luck was not on their side. Ethan was not sitting next to her, reading the latest in The New England Journal of Medicine. His grunts and sighs as he read was something she was missing. Tessa had wanted to cancel the trip but Ethan wouldn’t hear it, he wanted her to go and spend time with her family. His family lived close, so it was easier to spend time with his dad before or after the holiday. But because her family was on the other side of the country, he couldn’t let her let this time off slip away.

Tessa straightened up in the chair she was sitting in, her back beginning to ache from sitting for hours. The novel Sienna had given her in her hands, reading and rereading the first sentence unable to get past it with everything that was going on around her. Her fingers tapping against the paperback, her mind wondering to Ethan, his shift ending soon at Edenbrook, maybe she should call or send him a text.

“Getting a bit angsty are we?” A delicate older voice asked her.

Tessa turned to see a lovely older lady giving her a warm smile. Dressed in a Christmas sweater along with a candy cane necklace and matching earrings. A gossip magazine in her hand, Tessa gave her a smile of her own.

“Just a bit.” She answered, extending her hand out and introducing herself. “Tessa.”

The soft and delicate hand takes hers. “Barbara. But you my dear can call me Babs like my husband does.” Removing her hand from Tessa’s she pats the thigh of the man sitting next to her, one Tessa assumed was her husband. “Pat, dear, this is Tessa. She is also on her way to Texas.”

“That’s wonderful dear. Nice to meet you.” He says as they shake hands. “Have you been Dallas?”

“I haven’t. But its only a layover I’m afraid, I’m on my way to Mexico. Which at this rate doesn’t look like I’ll be making that flight out.”

“Oh don’t you worry my dear everything will work its self out. You’ll be where you are meant to be.” She pats Tessa on her knee. “Someone special waiting for you in Mexico?”

“Babs leave the poor girl alone.” Pat tells his wife.

“Hush. Don’t pay him much attention.”

Tessa fights back a laugh at little banter of Pat and Barbara. “My special someone is here. My family should be arriving in Mexico as we speak. My boyfriend and I couldn’t get the time off together this year, I don’t blame the hospital, it’s a busy time. We had been lucky in the past.”

Barbara’s blue eyes light up at her words. “You’re a Doctor?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Oh why didn’t you say so, there has been this thing bothering Pat for sometime. Maybe you can help.”

“I—uh…” Tessa stumbles with a response. Not that she wouldn’t help Pat but the airport was not the place to discuss personal medical information.

Before she can come up with something to say her phone chimes with a familiar tone she set up for one Ethan Ramsey.

“Excuse me. I need to get this.” Tessa tells the elderly couple before standing and grabbing her bag and carry-on.

“Of course, of course dear. We’ll try and save the seat for you. It brings me comfort to know there will be a doctor on the flight.” Barbara gave her a soft smile as she made her way away from the gate area.

God!

Of all the things for Ethan to say!

She couldn’t believe he would say such a thing. Now it was bound to happen it, was out there in the universe.

There was a coffee stand near her but she eyed a bar a few more steps down. The smart choice would be to go for another cup of coffee, at this point she needed something stronger. It’ll be a reminder of what is waiting for her, Tessa thought.

One margarita was harmless after all.

After making herself to the bar, she settled in as she waited for her drink. Tessa let the images of the tropical town in Mexico take over. The soft sandy beach, the warm sun tanning her golden skin. One that has gone pale with the season. One of many margaritas in her hand as she listened to the waves of the ocean crash onto the shore.

The buzzing of the airport seemed to get louder but that could be from the people watching whatever sport was playing on the screens as her drink was delivered.

Taking a sip of the margarita, Tessa opened up her phone and went to the weather app to see if what Ethan had told her would be true.

Surely enough, a blizzard was forecasted to start late in the evening. Tessa silently cursed Ethan under her breath, even though she knew it wasn’t his fault but he wasn’t here so he wouldn’t even know.

From where she sat, Tessa could see the departure board, and like lights on a Christmas tree, right before her eyes, flights were lighting up canceled red. Frantically grabbing her things and leaving her barely touched margarita behind, Tessa weaved and excused herself after bumping into fellow passengers.

She searched for her flight information, breathing a small sigh of relief as its still displayed delayed.

After staring for what seemed like forever to make sure there was no change as she walked away, her drink long forgotten, Tessa made her way back to her gate. Looking around, the once semi full area was now almost empty. Babs and Pat were no longer in the seats she sat next to. Maybe she should go back and wait for them to return, a conversation with them would make time go by.

Instead she took a seat that looked out on to the tarmac, Tessa began to see the white specks of snow beginning to fall. She closed her eyes, praying that it was just that specks of snow, before pulling out her book once more. This time Tessa was determined to get past the first line.

Unfortunately after some time, she didn’t know how much of it had passed, she closed it. The gossip magazine she purchased here calling her name. A faint smile spread across her face at the words Ethan said to her through their chat. He knew her like no one else did.

As she opened the magazine, a bit of sadness creeped in. Not because it was beginning to snow and the higher chance of the flight being canceled was more than likely as time went by. It was this certain doctor back in town that she was going to miss. How carefree he became with her family, how truly relaxed he became under the Mexican sun.

Tessa let out a sigh.

“Your secret is safe with me Tess.” A deep familiar voice said behind her.

Tessa slowly turns and right before her eyes there he stands, all six foot and three inches of him. Dressed in his usual dark slacks, blue button up shirt and tie but instead of his white coat, Ethan has on the camel colored overcoat she had gotten him.

His blue eyes soften as she smiles at him. “And what secret is that?” Tessa asks him.

Before answering Ethan takes the open seat next to her. “That you prefer this celebrity magazine.” He taps on the magazine in her lap. “Over the book your best friend got you.” He finishes.

“I would hope so. I didn’t beg you for a gossip queen and a tattle tale Ramsey.”

Tessa took his warm hand in hers and interlaced their fingers and leaned in to him and placed a soft gentle kiss against his cheek.

“Ethan, what are you doing here? How did you get pass TSA?”

“That’s the thing, I don’t have much time before they come charging.” He chuckled.

“Oh god! It’s a Christmas miracle!” Tessa playfully gasped. “The Ethan Ramsey made a joke!”

“Haha…very funny.”

A small moment of silence fell between them, Tessa rested her head against Ethan. On instinct his head rests against hers as its done many times before. Until it hit Tessa once more and she wondered how did Ethan got to her gate. He wouldn’t would he? That would be the only way, right? Or had his request been approved last minute and he was lucky enough to buy a ticket on this flight? Now that would have been a Christmas Miracle.

“I bought a ticket Rookie.” Ethan answered the question running through her mind. “I didn’t want you stuck at the airport alone when—.”

“The flight gets canceled.” Tessa finished. “Besides being back home with you was sounding better than being in another country without you.”

“Thank you Tess, but I know that’s a lie. You love being somewhere warmer than the frigid cold of the East Coast.”

Tessa lifts her head and faces him.“Ok you caught me, that is true but I loved it because you were there too. A relaxed, worry free Ethan takes over and that is one of the things I love to see.”

Without responding Ethan leans in towards her and places a soft kiss against her lips. He was about to kiss her again when there was announcement coming from the airline counter.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, today’s flight from Boston to Dallas has been canceled.”

Tessa didn’t hear the rest of what was being said. She turned and once more rested her head against Ethan, giving his hand that were still interlaced with each other a soft squeeze. The once light white specks of snow had now turned into a heavy downfall, covering everything outside.

“Looks like there’s a snowstorm. I guess we’re stuck in here together until it passes.” She tells him. Barbara’s words from earlier coming back to her, this right here with Ethan was where she is meant to be.

Ethan places a kiss on the top of her head. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

Thank you for tagging me ("twice" 😂) in this game, @jerzwriter! Here's the list of the Choices LIs I romanced.. There aren't really that many I spent diamonds on, though..

AME - the best LI in the best Choices book (and the only GOC book I read with a female MC), Mackenzie Harris! I also want replay with Derek as the LI, but can't decide whether to stick with my MC for that.. The dílemma! 😫😂

Big Sky Country - Sawyer Oakley. But I really want to reread the series with Dallas as LI..

Blades - started with Mal, ended up with Tyril (I just thought it worked better since my MC is an M!Elf as well.. 🤷‍♀️). But all the LIs in the book are great!

Bloodbound - Kamilah for the most part and I did the 35 💎 scene with Jax and Adrian at the Parisian club.. 😏 But I wasn't really spending diamonds on the series and I still have a few chapters left to read (which I still haven't gathered strength to do after reading what happens at the end.. 😫)

A Courtesan of Rome - Cassius!! And I loved Sabina as well. Though I was only diamond mining the book, so tough to say..

Desire and Decorum - Luke Harper! But I really wanted to romance prince Hamid as well! Before that I also did a Miss Parsons and Mr. Sinclaire routes (without spending diamonds on the romance scenes). All the LIs in this book are great though.. whether you romance them or not.

Distant Shores - Edward and Oliver. But again, I wasn't spending diamonds on the book..

The Elementalists - Beckett Harrington. I loved the book 1 diamond scenes, I remember I thought the ones in book 2 were pretty boring, but it's been a while since I read it..

Foreign Affairs - my M!MC romanced M!Hispanic!Blaine, my F!MC romanced Tatum and I don't even remember who my NB!MC romanced.. 😅 I've finally given up on the book (and almost the whole app) by chapter 12, so it doesn't really matter..

The Heist: Monaco - Fabien

Hero - Grayson and Kenji the second time I read it

HSS: Class Act - my M!MC romanced romanced M!Rory and my F!MC romanced Skye.. But once again I wasn't spending diamonds on the book..

Hot Couture - Marco and Luz.. Again, I wasn't spending diamonds on either. But it is actually on my list of books I want to reread properly sometime..

It Lives Beneath - Parker! Guess it was the right call to blow all my diamonds on this book, otherwise I'd be very unpleasantly surprised later.. 🤭😂

LoveHacks - Ben Park.. As per usual, no diamonds spent on the series..

Mother of the Year - Eiko. No diamonds spent, but I'm thinking of rereading it properly since everyone seems to love the book so much..

Nightbound - Nik, but I still haven't finished the book..

Open Heart - Bryce, Bryce and only Bryce. The OBVIOUS choice and easily the best Choices LI. And I also did a full Jackie route with her as the sole LI (still have to finish book 3, but Jackie gets what? 4 scenes in that? 🤦‍♀️). I also did the other routes as well with MC romancing everyone in book 1 and only sticking with one from book 2 onward (well, then there's Vegas.. 😁).

Perfect Match - Damien, but I still have to finish this one too..

Platinum - F!Avery at first, then switched to F!Raleigh.. But haven't spent diamonds on either.. But I might replay this one as well..

Red Carpet Diaries - Thomas Hunt

Ride-or-Die - Mona, I'm actually not sure if I spent diamonds on this one (maybe one scene?)

The Royal Masquerade - F!Kayden, no diamonds spent..

TRR - the first time I played I've given up hope that Maxwell was an LI by the time Drake confessed his feelings for MC after he "saved MC from Tariq" and because I'm weak, I couldn't turn him down after that.. 😅 After I found out that Maxwell actually was an LI during the UN rooftop scene, I started his route on another device.. I also romanced Hana for a bit in book 1. But I've given up on the series at chapter 12 of The Royal Heir I believe..

RoE - I romanced all the LIs in that I believe, but Leo was the main LI.. I spent some diamonds on the series but none on the romance scenes..

Save the Date - Lindsay and, yes, one of the most hated LIs - Justin.. 😅 I only bought that finale diamond scene (and I don't even remember what happened in it, lol.

Veil of Secrets - Flynn O'Malley (you can't tell me that they didn't base him on Ian Sommerhalder, lol). Again, didn't spend diamonds.. My MC left town at the end.. But I'll definitely replay and fix my mistake, lol.

Wake the Dead - my man Troy of course! Worth every diamond!

Wishful Thinking - Anna Koishi

Phew, that was longer than I thought it would be... 😅

last night i had a WEIRD dream dkwbjfwn

so you remember the concert i accidentally ranted abt? well in the dream we manage to get tickets to the concert, somehow, and we get to dallas, we're chillin, and then its time for the concert!

idk why but for some reason the venue had the general floor for the more expensive tickets then there were three stacked up balconies

our tickets got us onto the top balcony, and we somehow were able to get a spot at the front of the railing

so, bit of info abt me, i get lightheaded a lot and occasionally my vision will start to almost entirely black out, but its always faded after a second yknow?

well, its part way through the concert, they just got done performing one of their sonngs, which i think actually has the hardest choreo of all their songs, and i start getting light headed. i grab the railing, which was honestly way too short like why. just why. but i fucking pass out and fall

im just limp, dropping whats more like six stories than three bc the balconies are on every other story, and somehow someone on the bottom balcony managed to catch my ankle. im just hanging there, passed tf out, while basically everyone on the balconies are freaking out.

around that point i kinda wake up a bit and well. im terrified of heights, ysee. so now IM freaking the fuck out, screaming my head off, trying to get up, but the person holding me cant pull me up. so im here like sobbing, being very LOUD abt my freakout

but yea im assuming my freakout was loud ejough for the skz to hear, bc they start tryina get towards me to help. dude grip is starting to slip, bc yknow two sweaty limbs aint got a lot of friction

but they manage to get under where this is happening, somehow. the staff was VERY against them leaving the stage ajdbqjbd

so im here, draped over this man who somehow caught a 180lbs idiot who was falling from TWO STORIES, and getting flipped over so im in a bridal carry. im entirely unintelligible at this point, cause yknow, I ALMOST DIED, and im fucking sobbing my head off while clinging to this man.

and of course, my fucking sister, having finally made it down to the ground floor, getting a video of me clinging to him after shes certain im not dead

i am curious, and also deeply sad that the fic is over, i am def going to reread it again soon! but for now: do you have any idea how ronan would propose? :D i mean, it is obviously not that important but i am curious and ronan sounded so sure about it haha! anyway thanks for writing such an amazing fanfic, i loved every word of it. sorry for this random ask!!

hmmm good question. i never planned on writing a proposal so i don't really know!

maybe adam joins him the next time he's on tour and ronan asks him after the show in dallas, at the same hotel they had their first kiss.

maybe he puts a ring in the little box of green guitar picks he gave adam for his birthday and the next time adam opens it, he pulls out the ring and says "what the hell is this" and ronan says, "finally, parrish, i thought you'd never fucking find it. wanna marry me?"

maybe adam comes to a show ronan thought he wouldn't make it to and surprises him backstage, and ronan is so happy to see him that he proposes on the spot.

maybe while adam is working late one night he decks the whole roof out with fairy lights so it's all pretty and twinkling and when adam gets back he sings him the first song he wrote for him only he's switched up the lyrics to make it a proposal.

maybe adam asks him first.

Nine People to Get to Know Better

Three ships you like: I am leaving so many out! Making this easier by choosing a theme, which is Classic 2000s Ships - Buffy/Angel from their respective series (though mostly BtVS), Buffy/Tara, and Sonea/Akkarin from The Black Magician Trilogy/Kyralia books.

First ship ever: Usagi/Mamoru from Sailor Moon! Or, as I knew it in the brief time between watching the DiC dub and going online, Serena/Darien. That first season in particular was so good for their angst, the star-crossedness, and the whole being drawn to their alternate identities. And then the manga was angstier…

To this day it—and it’s show—have informed my fondness for moon myths and fantasy.

Favorite childhood book: I have fond memories of reading and rereading The Spellsong Cycle series by L. E. Modesitt Jr. there was also this book called, I think, Children’s Treasury, which had many Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales in abridged form; it lived in my paternal grandmother’s house for years until she let me keep it. I also loved this slim volume called something like 100 Best Poems, along with a thicker one of collected poems from various authors. I remember my favorite poems were by Yeats and Byron. Oh! And The Gods of the Greeks by Carl Kerényi; I particularly loved it for having a page or two dedicated to the moon goddess Selene, since at the time it was easier to find information on Artemis when looking up the Greek moon myths. Artemis (and Hecate) were also interesting, but, well, Sailor Moon fan here. (I’d read online that Princess Serenity and Endymion, the past lives of Usagi and Mamoru, took from the myth of Selene and Endymion.) This was around when I was reading and collecting the manga for the first time.

Currently reading: Rereading The Naming by Alison Croggon, first in the Pellinor series; also revisiting the Sookie Stackhouse books, but in audio form! I’m on Living Dead in Dallas.

Currently watching: Being Human, the UK version. Also The Apothecary Diaries!

Currently consuming: A muscle relaxant, water, and some passionfruit juice.

Currently craving: Cold milk! But there’s none.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is failing Dallas

First of all I do have to admit I do not have much experience riding mass transit, however the ones I have rode are significantly much better than what Dallas is giving us right now. Second I have always felt one reason for rapid transit is to help get cars off the road. And if there is ever a city that needs to get cars off the road it is Dallas. Two other cities that could use reduced traffic that I know of are Los Angeles and Houston. I have spent some time in both of those cities and all day long traffic just doesn’t benefit anyone, however I live in the Dallas area so I will want to talk about where we stand.

I am going to speak most specifically about the train system, yet I have traveled by bus in Dallas and Austin long before the DART train system was ever built. Basically at various times in my life I have tried to do what is right for our environment and use mass transportation. And if you live in Texas you already know that is actually a bit of a chore.

My experiences using train or metro systems previously include Washington DC, London and Madrid. I first used the metro in DC when I was a teenager and outside of getting the hang of it so to speak I managed to get around quite well. It was not a large system at that time, yet it got me to where I wanted to go. I have used it since including recently with my youngest daughter who lives there now. My family once visited DC in the early 2000’s and rode it from a hotel outside of DC into downtown and it was rather nice generally speaking. By no means I am saying it is perfect, but it is definitely functional and has only minimal of the problems that Dallas has.

I spent a week or so in London while I was in college and rode their system extensively. We did not rent a car so to go anywhere we had to use their metro system. And it got us around the entire London area including riding out to the equivalent of suburbs in the United States. I was able to find some pretty unique things to do and had no trouble getting there. The trains ran regularly and same as DC has little of the same problems that plaques Dallas.

We also spent a week in Madrid and pretty much the same. We had to use the system to get around and outside of the forced marches our daughter took us on (family joke) it was very beneficial. The phrase it is just over there means something completely different to a college student than an older couple.

Another aspect of these other systems is that you can connect to trains that go to places less than a hundred miles away so there are day trip options you just don’t have from Dallas even though there are places you could go that would be entertaining for tourists visiting Dallas.

The problem is getting people to ride DART that normally drive. And I hate saying this, but DART does not manage its riders well. It is almost like DART is taking a Christian approach and letting the homeless and mentally unstable have carte blanche on their system. I saw an occasional problem in the above mentioned systems, but nothing like what goes on in Dallas. Even the regular riders that use mass transportation because they need it are frustrated.

I reread my first sentence and I guess I should clarify. I do ride DART in Dallas to get around for many reasons from going to work, to going to my doctor and for other various destinations. My wife and my oldest daughter do not want me to ride. My wife has been on DART trains and buses and she is just not comfortable with some of the clientele. And I understand why, there are people on the system that take away from feeling safe, secure, even healthy in fact way too many. Yes some people should be able to ride, but when the system is bogged down so much that regular riders are uncomfortable there is a general problem that needs to be addressed. No one wants to say it out loud because we all want to be considerate, yet for a system to work people have to see a benefit to riding it. That is not happening in Dallas and it is the people who need mass transportation to get to work, shopping or other necessities that provide the bulk of the revenue are hindered and uncomfortable and if they could they would not ride. This would of course doom DART.

I think most of the problem is a logistics problem with how DART is set up. I do not manage nor understand the management of mass transportation so I do not feel confident in making a complete overhaul recommendation, but it feels that is what is needed.

To be successful DART needs paying riders and to help make DART beneficial to Dallas many of those paying riders need to be people that would normally drive to work at the very least. And that will not happen until DART decides to address the problem with the people who are not just impoverished, but significantly marginalized. It sounds cruel, but they cannot continue to allow these people to be such a problem that other people do not want to use the system.

And I know we need to do more as a society to help the marginalized people, but if we also want to increase ridership and help those who need mass transportation to go about their daily lives, DART cannot be a surrogate answer to homelessness. I have seen fights between people who could barely understand who they are and for many average Americans they just aren’t going to accept this while riding. It is a harsh reality, but true that most Americans do not want these types of problems interfering with their lives or worse subject them to conditions that make them uncomfortable to downright scared.

I would love to continue to ride DART, but am under orders from family members not to even think about it. (I have though). It is rough when you have seen other cities do very well with their systems and outside of an occasional individual most riders are going about their general day and you feel little concern.

Management of DART may need to make some hard decisions or they will continue to struggle with limited ridership in a city that desperately needs them to fill up those trains.

And again I know we need to do more for the marginalized, yet those answers are even more difficult.
