Hi, it’s emo hours again.
Remember when Calum said while writing songs, it’s either a question or an answer, and that Ghost of You was definitely a question?
I disagree.
A really huge theme in Youngblood is holding on to someone who’s gone and inability to move on, and Ghost of You fits perfectly in that mix.
The last change in verse, “my feet don’t dance like they did with you”, feels like a conclusion. Like declaring they’re never going to feel the same love again. Which feels like closure? To me, at least. No matter how much that hurts, they know it’s over, they are not getting it back and the “shot of truth” is just. acceptance?
So, maybe they’re ready to try and move on, which leaves a bunch of possibilities open, which makes sense that it’s “leaving us at the edge of our seat”. As the last song on the album, I agree it evokes a certain curiosity as to where this love will go.
But as a song, I think it comes with answers. Bitter, painful, unpleasant answers.

You’d had these lyrics stuck in your head, replaying on a loop for a while now, but hadn’t had any time to actually get them down on paper.
You weren’t going to lie, this last year has been a clusterfuck.  From Easton breaking up with you,  basically telling you he found someone else and that he wants nothing to do with you or Elijah, to not being able to write because you’ve been transitioning Elijah into preschool (he was not having it.) It was safe to say it had been a very rough year for you.
When you did sit down and try to write, nothing would come to mind. All of your anger and heartbreak were there and ready to be used to make beautiful music others could relate to, but you just couldn’t come up with anything. Well, besides those lyrics, it was a longshot trying to come up with anything for that either.
Maybe it was still too fresh, and maybe you were still heartbroken, but you just needed to do something besides sit in bed wallowing in your self pity.
Of course, Elijah didn’t know what was happening. He just knew ‘daddy’ left and that he hasn’t been back. You didn’t have the guts or the courage to break his heart by telling him ‘daddy’ wasn’t coming back. He was three, he wouldn’t understand, but it also broke your heart all over again when he asked in his tiny curious voice ‘da-ddy?’
What were you supposed to say, “I'm sorry baby, but ‘daddy’ doesn’t love us anymore and he’s not coming back?” No, you weren’t going to do that to him.
But as you sit there on the dark studio couch, the lyrics on the tip of your tongue, it's like you can’t get anything out. You have them right there in front of you, your black bass guitar sitting in your lap as you strum the bass line softly and hum along until you finally try and sing out the lyrics.
“We said we’d both love harder than we knew we could go,” you sang softly into the empty room, thinking back to nights when you laid next to Easton, talking about how much you loved each other and how neither of you would ever stop because you loved each other more and more everyday.
“But still knowing when to let go- no” you shake your head, not liking how that sounded.  “But still the hardest part is knowing when to let go” nodding, you scratch out your previous lyrics and replace them before you go back to picking at the cords, finding where you left off.
You were so focused on the lyrics, mumbling to yourself and scratching out lyrics and replacing them you didn’t hear the studio door open.
You were struggling on a particular verse, mumbling to yourself as you read off the lyrics written in what looks like chicken scratch in the notebook layed out in front of you.
“You wanted to go higher, higher, higher, we-” but you stopped, stumped on what should come next. You sing what you already have out, trying to come up with anything but fall back into the couch cushions groaning when you don’t.
“We burn too bright, now the fire’s gone, watch it all fall down” a voice sings out, startling you, and you let out a gasp. Looking up at the tall curly headed man standing at the door, your brows furrow. You were supposed to have this studio for two hours. He was dressed in a pair of basketball shorts, and a ‘The tonight show, Starring Jimmy Fallon’ gray shirt. A pair of Vans covered his feet and tattoos covered his arms.
“Just thought I'd suggest something that came to mind,” the accented man voices, walking down the small step from the door and down where you are. You watch as he takes a seat on the small black loveseat against the wall across from yours.
You close your eyes and sing the words in your head, strumming the bass as you do. “Thanks, that’s actually really helpful,” you tell him, writing it down. “How long were you standing there?” you ask him, looking over his dark curly hair and down to his brown eyes that look over you just as you are him.
“Just a minute or two. Didn’t expect anyone to be in here, the band is supposed to have booked it for a few hours today.”
You look down at your watch hearing his words and gasp at the time. You were almost twenty minutes late to pick up Elijah from preschool.
“Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I lost track of time” you tell him, quickly placing the bass back on its stand in the corner next to the couch and packing your notebook and music sheets in your bag.
“It’s ok, happens to the best of us,” his deep accented voice carries towards you as you see him shrug his shoulder out of the corner of your eye. “I’m Calum by the way,” he introduces himself, holding out his hands as you move to walk past him.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Y/n and also very late to -” you hesitate, not wanting to tell a stranger you just met about your son. “ To a dinner” you finish, shaking his hand before walking around him and to the door.
Your hand is on the handle and pulling it open, before you hesitate, awkwardly turning over your shoulder to say, “It was nice to meet you, thank you for the lyrics,” you smile at him.
He nods, sending you a friendly smile. “Any time”.
You watch his eyes roam over you before you wave and head out, a smirk playing on your lips.
Quickly, you make it to your car, driving 10 over the speed limit and making it to the preschool near your house in record time. You run up the sidewalk, signing Elijah out at the front desk before making your way down the hall to his classroom.
He’s playing blocks with two other kids who happen to be siblings, Avery and Jase, not even paying you any mind, too engrossed in building a tall tower just for it to fall down landing all over the play mat.
“Elijah, mommy’s here,” his teacher, Miss. Rachel, calls him when she sees you in the doorway. You watch as his head quickly turns your way, a bright smile spreading across his chubby cheeks.
“Mommy!” he squeals, standing to his feet and running to you. His small arms wrap around your thighs, his cheeks squished as he looks up at you with his bright smile.
“Hi baby! Did you have fun today?” You smile, squatting down to his level and squeezing him to your chest as you place kisses all over his face.
He nods against you, pulling back as he tells you all about how he painted you a picture but that you had to wait to see it because it had to dry overnight.
“I can’t wait to see it, baby! We’ll have to hang it on the fridge” you tell him as you grab his bag off the hook, telling him to go help clean up the blocks and a few cars that were laying out when you see that the parents of Avery and Jase are also here.
When he’s all done you pick him up, placing him on your hip as you walk out to the car, his head resting on your shoulder as his eyes fall heavy. You know he’ll fall asleep the minute you start driving.
You load him into his car seat and buckle him in before heading down the street, taking a few left turns and passing tall, two story gated houses before you pull into your own gated driveway. You bought this house with Easton, but only you signed the mortgage, so it was easy for him to move out. No need to sign paperwork or go to court. You’re so thankful for that.
You wanted a safe neighborhood for Elijah to grow up in, and this is it. You moved in when he was a newborn, you did have to sign an NDA because some celebrity lived in one of the houses across from you, but you'd never seen them so you didn’t know who it was.
As you expected, when you went to grab Elijah out of his car seat he was out like a light, his mouth open as he rested the side of his tanned forehead on the side of the padded car seat.
Smiling softly at his sleeping form, you gently unbuckled him and rested him on your chest as you walked into your house and to the couch. You had a net that attached to one end of your couch that stopped about mid center of the cushions to stop him from rolling off. He doesn’t roll around in his sleep often, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. You place him behind it and lay his favorite blanket over him before you walk into the kitchen to start on dinner.
--------
It’s been a week since you ran late in the studio and Calum walked in on you. For some odd reason, you couldn’t get him out of your head. You had barely even talked to the guy but yet he was stuck in your head. His lyrics were stuck, replaying in your mind. He had only stood there for a minute or two, but yet the lyrics he sang went so well with yours.
You were back in the same studio today, placing the finishing touches on the lyrics before you recorded the demo for it and eventually sold it to an artist or band to make their own.
You look up, your brows furrowing when you hear loud laughter out in the hall, but you brush it off and finish setting up your computer on the panel so you could record the demo when you were done with the lyrics.
Standing, you make your way into the booth, setting up a stool and pulling the bass guitar and it’s stand into the booth as well. You didn’t hear the door open, or the four laughing men walk into the room until you go to step back into the studio where the panel is.
Your brows furrow when your eyes meet Calum’s brown ones, his face showing shock before it turns into a bright smile as his cheeks scrunch up. It reminds you of Elijah’s. You know you weren’t late to pick him up or running over your studio time because you booked the studio until lunch; it was only 10:30am.
“We really gotta stop meeting like this,” Calum jokes with you, his bright smile making something flutter in you.
“But this time it’s not my fault,” you tell him, smiling and looking at the three other very tall men standing behind him.
The tall blonde with blue eyes and curly hair that ends at his ears smiles at you, showing off his dimples, “I’m Luke, it’s nice to meet you.” he introduces.
You smile politely. “It’s nice to meet you too, I'm Y/n.”
“Oh we know,” the red head chuckles. His hair is clearly dyed, but it suits him. His smile is bright and contagious. “Cal over here couldn’t stop talking about you and how amazing of a songwriter you are. I’m Ashton,” he tells you, holding out his hand for you to shake.
You quirked an eyebrow up in Calum’s direction. “Is that so,” you tease, watching as his cheeks tint a shade of pink while you shake Ashton’s hand.
“Oh yeah,” the shorter blonde one speaks up. “He even looked you up, wanted to know if you were selling that song you were working on. I’m Michael, but you can call me Mikey.”
“Well you’re in luck, I was just about to record the demo for it. But if you’re interested you can have a look at the finished lyrics,” you tell them, pulling out the pages of printed lyrics from your bag.
They all nod, sitting down on the couches. You hand Calum the papers, smiling down at him before you take a seat at the panel, watching as they all huddle around Calum to read the lyrics.
A chorus of ‘holy shit’s’ and ‘fuck that’s good’ sound as they finally put the paper down and stare at you.
“So, you like it?” you ask.
“Do we like it?” Ashton asks incredulously, looking at the boys and shaking his head in a way that says he can’t believe you asked that.
“Yeah, y/n. We like it.” Calum tells you. “We're working on our third album right now and I think it would be great to add it to the album,” he says, looking at the other guys as they nod along in agreement.
“That’s great, we can sign all of the paperwork soon.” you say, excited you don’t have to record the demo now. It’s always the hardest part. “I wrote a bit of a bass line, but nothing else so do whatever with it.”
“We actually have something to ask you,” Ashton says, nudging Cal in the arm. Cal glares at him with a look like ‘knock it off’.
“We were talking after I played some of the other songs you’ve written. You’re an amazing songwriter and we wanted to know if you wanted to help us write our album?” he asks, a bit shyly you notice.
You’ve never written with someone or a band, not because you didn’t want to, you’ve just never had the opportunity. The only reason you would even consider turning this down was Elijah; you couldn’t take this opportunity if it was going to keep you from him.
You weren’t really keen on telling people you barely knew about your son, but if you wanted to work with them and still have enough time for Elijah they needed to know.
“Look,” you sigh, watching their shoulders deflate a bit and their hopeful expressions drop a tad. “I would love to, but you need to know I have a 3 year old  son, and I can’t have this taking me away from him. I promised myself when I got pregnant that I would always choose him over anything. Even if it is my dream. So,” you prompt, “if we can work around me having time with him then I’m in.”
They all assure you that they’d help you make time for him. Ashton really hit home with you when he tells you, “I totally understand you wanting to make time for him, I grew up with only my mom and my two little siblings. We’ll make sure you get time with him.” he smiles softly at you, a knowing but sad look in his eyes.
You smiled at him softly, thanking him and the guys, “I grew up with only my mom too. It was hard, but she was the best mother and role model. She was the strongest woman I know.”
“Was?” Calum asked softly. Looking at you with gentle but curious eyes.
You nod, smiling sadly. “She passed away a year and a half after Elijah was born. Breast cancer. It was really hard.” The memories come rushing back, and tears well up in your eyes, but you push them down, not wanting to cry.
You all talked for a while, working out when you were available and what times it would be good to meet at the studio. It was when you were all packing up that Ashton proposed a chill night. “We should all hang out and have a night where we get to know each other better, drink and just talk.”
There was a chorus of agreements, but when you hadn’t said anything they all stared at you waiting for your answer.
“That actually sounds like fun, I'll be there. Just let me know a time and place,” you tell them smiling. You haven’t had a night to yourself since before Easton left, so you were long overdue.
Calum offered to host it at his house, before you all exchanged numbers and left for the day. You planned on picking up Elijah early and taking him out for ice cream. It was his favorite treat and it was pretty hot today, so you decided it was a good day to indulge.
You were just pulling up outside of the preschool when your phone vibrated in the cup holder next to you. Pulling it out, you see the message notification reading ‘Calum Hood’ swiping it and unlocking your phone the text pulls up.
Tumblr media
That should work for you, Elijah has been going to sleep around that time and you should be able to get Jessie to come over and watch him for a few hours while you’re over there. His address sticks out to you, not because you thought you’ve heard of it before but because it was basically your address just a few numbers off.
Maybe he’s why you had to sign the NDA. He most likely has had fans coming to his home and waiting around to even get a glimpse of him in the past and didn’t want this address to get out to the public.
Quickly sending him back a text, you put your phone back in the cupholder and go in to grab Elijah.

------
The next day you were up and finishing off the last ‘Mickey Mouse’ pancake for a late breakfast. You were surprised Elijah stayed asleep past 8am, it was currently almost 11am and you were just about to go check on him and tell him breakfast was ready when he came padding around the corner rubbing his eyes with his tiny fists.
“Well good morning little man,” you smile down at him, placing blueberries on his ‘Mickey Mouse’ pancake for eyes, chocolate chips for the mouth and a blackberry as the nose all adhered with whipped cream. Elijah was allergic to strawberries, or otherwise you would have added those in somehow.
You woke to a message from Calum, replying to your message from last night. It was only sent about forty minutes before you woke up, but you didn’t see it until you were in the middle of making breakfast.
Tumblr media
You typed out a reply with one hand while flipping a normal round pancake for you and sending it.
Tumblr media
You couldn’t figure out why you were smiling. He was a very attractive man, nothing like the guys you’ve dated in the past. Maybe that’s why you’re attracted to him. He’s not like the other guys who have treated you badly in the past; he’s nice and caring and didn’t run the second you mentioned you had a son.
When you and the guys had been talking yesterday in the studio he asked to see a photo of Elijah. He told you how adorable he was, and how he looked just like you. Calum seems to be such a genuine and down to earth guy and if you weren’t careful you would fall for him. And hard.
Carefully, you cut Elijah’s pancake up in little bites for him to eat, and pour a small amount of syrup over his and yours.
You watch as he uses his green plastic fork. He has his mouth wide open the whole time as he carefully brings it up to his mouth.
You cheer and kiss his cheek happily when he looks up at you excited when he got it in his mouth without dropping it.
“Look at you! You don’t even need mommy anymore, you're such a big boy!” you smile down at him, taking a bite of your own pancake. He laughs his small contagious laugh, picking up another piece of pancake.
“Baby, I need to talk to you about something” you say to him, making him look up at you with his wide brown eyes, his fork just at the entrance of his mouth.
“T-trouble?” he asks you over his chewing, still looking up at you.
“No, baby,” you chuckle, wiping the corner of his mouth where there was a bit of syrup threatening to drip down on his pj’s. “You’re not in trouble.”
“But I have a big job.’ you tell him, “ A band asked me to help them write music for their album, so it might not always be me picking you up from daycare, it might be Miss. Jessie sometimes, is that ok?”
He nods excitedly. “Yeah! Mi-miss Jessie is nice to m-me!” he stutters a bit as he gets excited.
“Okay, also, i have a friend and he invited us over to swim! Do you want to go swimming?” you ask him as you sip the last of your coffee before eating the last bit of your pancakes.
“Yeah!” he shouts. He’s been taking swimming lessons since he was two, he knows what to do if he falls into the pool. He loves the water too, he's a little fish when it comes to the water.
You both finish eating and while you rinse off the dishes and place them in the dishwasher Elijah runs into his room screaming excitedly about going swimming. You laugh, shaking your head at his antics before following after him when you’re done loading the dishwasher.
You change his diaper into one of those swimming ones with cars on it, before pulling a pair of yellow swim shorts over the diaper.  When you have him changed, you pack his diaper bag with a change of clothes, an extra swim and regular diaper along with sunscreen and his yellow bucket hat.
You double check you have everything before you put his sandals on and bring him into your room so you can change into your blue bikini. It had high rise bottoms and the cups actually covered all of your breasts. You throw on a white cover up before sliding your own sandals on and heading out.
Since his house is literally one house down from yours and across the street, you decide to just walk over.
The sun was beating down on you as you walked out of the front door and locked it behind you. You text Calum that you’re on your way over before putting your phone in the diaper bag and heading down your driveway.
It only takes you a minute to walk down the sidewalk and cross the street to his house. Checking your phone to see if he messaged you back when you’re outside the black gate, he did, telling you the gate was open and just to come in.
Tumblr media
You push open the gate, closing it behind you once you’re on the other side. There’s a black range rover parked in front of the open garage where you heard what sounded like an air pump.
Walking towards the garage and around the black SUV, you see Calum’s familiar dark curls  as he kneels on the concrete blowing up a small turtle pool floaty.
“Hey,” you greet Calum as you place Elijah down on his feet and squat behind him, pulling up his yellow shorts from where they fell down on the walk over.
Looking up, you’re greeted with that bright white smile you’ve seen a few times at the studio but never fails to warm your heart.
“Hey, I'm glad you guys could come!” Calum greets you, plugging the hole on the floaty before he turns off the air pump. He stands up just to walk a few steps in front of you and kneel down to Elijah’s level. “It’s nice to meet you Elijah, I’m Calum,”  he introduces himself sweetly as he smiles down at your son.
Elijah giggles, turning into you as hiding his face on your leg. “Don’t be shy, baby,” you chuckle, running your hand over the back of his dark hair. You smile up at Calum, his face showing nothing but happiness and  eyes  lit up with pure adoration.
“Can you say hi? Say, ‘Hi Calum’” you whispered in Elijah's ear, chuckling when  he shook his head and held on tighter to you.
“The tickle monster is gonna get you,” you sing out, your hands unwinding from him and to his sides where you tickle him. Elijah lets out his high pitched laughter, giggling at  you to stop as he tries to squirm out of your hold.
“Hi!” he squeals loudly and you stop tickling him. Elijah turns around to face Calum, smiling up at him as he says, “Hi, Ca- calum.”
“Hi, buddy. Are you ready to go swimming?”
Elijah shouts out a ‘Yes!’ throwing his hands in the air and singing the song he was singing this morning about going swimming.
“Sw-imming swimm-ing i going swimming” he shouts, causing you and Cal to break out in laughter.
-----
Calum was amazing.
He was so sweet and caring with Elijah. Playing the same game over and over for almost an hour just to hear Elijah’s loud laughter.
Catching your three year old over and over when he learned it was okay to jump into the pool and dunking him when he caught him just to throw him a few feet away in the water.
Elijah’s loud laugher reverberated around the backyard and the trees that were planted against the walls encasing the closed off area. You felt pure joy at hearing his laughter. You knew he was feeling down with everything that’s happened with Easton, and hearing his laughter reminded you just what you have to live for, what’s waiting for you on good days and bad.
Elijah is your whole world, your little sunshine, and you couldn’t imagine life without him.
Looking over at the pool where Elijah and Calum were splashing each other, big contagious smiles spread across their faces and laughter flowing from their chests, you can’t help but smile. Watching them warms your heart.
You were sitting on a couch in the shade next to the pool, Duke in your lap sleeping peacefully until Ashton’s loud voice invaded the bubble you all had been wrapped up in for the last four hours.
“Hey, why wasn’t I invited?” he fake pouts as he stands in the doorway of the sliding glass doors. His hands rest on his hips as his eyes flicker around to all of you.
“Thought you were with Kaykay,” Calum calls over to him, shrugging as he holds Elijah to his chest. That makes your heart flutter, seeing how tightly he holds him and how Elijah wraps his arms around Calums neck, a huge smile playing on his face.
“Again,” Elijah giggled out.
“Again? Ok,” Calum chuckled, throwing Elijah up in the air, his contagious laughter ringing out before he fell into the water below. You watch as Elijah swims to the surface, wiping his face of water and calling out ‘Again!’
Time flew by, because the last time you checked your phone was when you all sat down to have a bit of lunch around two, and it was now almost four thirty.
Ashton made his way over to the long outdoor couch you were sitting on and took a seat in the spot next to you.
“Is that Elijah?” he asks you softly, his eyes trained on Calum and Elijah who were spinning in the water before Calum launched your son in the air again as he let out a squeal of happiness.
“Yeah,” you chuckled. “That’s E. He’s a handful.”
Ashton smiles, letting out a deep chuckle, “I bet. He’s adorable, he looks just like you,” he tells you.
“Thank you. When he was a baby he looked so much like my mom it was crazy.” you smile softly to yourself, remembering when you found old pictures of your mom and put one side by side with one of Elijah’s. They were practically identical.
You were brought out of your thoughts when a small wet body climbed up in your lap and laid his head on your shoulder tiredly. “Are you tired, E?” you ask him softly, moving his wet hair - he needs a haircut - off his forehead before placing a light kiss upon it.
He nods tiredly against you, his small hand lazily stroking the top of Duke’s head. The dog  had moved to  cuddle into the side of your thigh when Ashton sat down.
Calum appeared in front of you, a towel wrapped around his hips as he smiled down at you softly, holding out a towel for you. “Thank you,” you tell him, taking the towel and wrapping it around Elijah to try and keep him warm and dry him off.
“Should we just call Luke and Mikey and tell them to come over now? Since we're already here?” Ashton asks as Calum sits on the ‘L’ part of the couch next to your legs. “Did you drive here?” he asks you, his brows furrowed. “I didn’t see your car out there when I pulled in.”
“Oh, no,” you shake your head. “I live across the street.”
Ashtons eyebrows raise in surprise before he lets out a chuckle, “wow, small world.”
You nod, “if you guys want to call Luke and Mikey that’s okay with me, but the babysitter I have  for E can’t come until 7, she has a family thing.” you tell them, looking down at the small boy in your arms who has fallen asleep against your shoulder.
“That’s fine. If you want you can go lay him down in my bed? So he can take a nap until your babysitter gets to your house,” Calum tells you softly.
“Yeah,” you nod. “That would be good.” you tell him, smiling up at him gently.
You all head inside, Elijah on your hip sleeping soundly against your shoulder as Calum leads you down the hall just off the kitchen and to the last door on the right. It was nothing like you’d picture his room to be.
The  walls are white, and there’s a tv hanging on the gray accent wall in front of the bed. The bed is made with the white fluffy comforter folded where it meets the firm, white pillows at the top of the bed. The floor is clear, save a few cords to the tall lamp in the corner of the room and a charger.
“Bathroom’s through there,” he tells you pointing to the open door next to the tv.
“Thank you, Cal,” you tell him sincerely. Thankful for him offering to let E nap in his room.
“Yeah, of course y/n. Make yourself at home,” he smiles before leaving you and walking back to the living room.
You unwrap the towel from around Elijah, laying it out on the bed before placing your sleeping boy down gently. You change him into his regular diaper, causing him to whine and thrash around before you change him into a pair of navy blue cotton shorts and  a plain white shirt . He quiets down, falling back to sleep as you move him up to the pillows, forming a sort of wall around him with a pillow on both sides of his body before you gently place a kiss to his forehead.
Picking up the diaper bag you walk into the bathroom, which is just as clean as the bedroom, to change yourself.
You untie your bikini top and reach into the bag, only to find a swim diaper and the sunblock. You swore quietly, thinking back to when you packed the bag and realizing you didn’t pack a pair of extra clothes for yourself.
Quickly you put your top and your white cover up back on, swearing at yourself in your head for forgetting clothes before walking out of the bathroom quietly so you didn’t wake Elijah up.
You padded down the hallway and into the kitchen where Cal was sitting at the counter as Ashton rummaged through the fridge talking about a song he started writing.
Calum looks up when you appear in the kitchen doorway, his eyes flickering over your body as his brows furrow, “You didn’t change?” he points out more than asks.
You nod, biting your lip as your cheeks blush. “Uh, yeah. I forgot to pack any clothes for myself,” you tell him, smiling shyly, “But i’m ok in this,” you assure him.
“Are you sure?” he asks, concerned. “I can watch Elijah while you go home to change-” he pauses, “or actually I think Mali might have left some clothes behind when she was here last.” he tells you, hopping off his stool and walking down the hall again.
Mali? Is that his girlfriend?
Your stomach fills with dread. Just when you thought you finally met someone that didn’t run at the mention of your son, he probably has a girlfriend. Just look at him, of course he has a girlfriend.
“She’s always buying way too many new clothes while she’s here, she can’t fit them all back into her suitcase when she needs to leave,” he tells you chuckling as he holds out a pair of grey sweat pants and a green hoodie.
You hesitate a second, not really wanting to wear his girlfriend's clothes. But the chill in his house is causing goosebumps to appear on your arms. “Thank you,” you say, taking them from his hands and walking back down the hall to change rooms and check on Elijah.
-----
“No,” Luke sighs, shaking his head.
“Yeah,” you nod, your mood a stark difference from what it was an hour ago. “He came home one day and said ‘I found someone else, I don’t love you and I'm leaving’ he didn’t even mention Elijah. Just packed up all of his shit while I sat on the couch crying trying to wrap my head around what was happening.”
“From the moment I found out I was pregnant it felt like he was on a different planet. We didn’t match anymore, we didn’t have that spark. If I'm being honest with myself that spark died out a long time ago, I just didn’t want to admit it. He was obviously not excited about the pregnancy- and I wasn't either at first, but when I heard E’s heartbeat for the first time-” you pause, “I can’t even describe it. It was like all my motherly instincts clicked in and I loved him more than I could ever have imagined,” you sigh, smiling at the memory of  the day you heard Elijah’s heartbeat.
“I kept telling myself that Easton would come around once Elijah got here. It never really happened though. We were both in our twenties, he wanted to party, and drink and just have fun, and he did, and I stayed home with a screaming newborn while he was out living it up.” shrugging you looked up at all of them, smiling softly.
When you came out from changing into the clothes Calum lent you, all the guys were in the kitchen talking. Luke brought Chinese and you all just sat around talking for hours. You learned a lot of eye opening things. Elijah went home about an hour after they all got there, Jessie coming over to grab him before going back over to your house.
They formed their band when they were still in highschool, which was crazy to you. How they were still friends amazed you; you had lost contact with all your highschool friends when you moved to LA.
Ashton was the oldest out of all of them. Mikey told the story of how he messaged Ashton on facebook messaged Ashton asking if he wanted to join the band. You laughed so hard at how the story was told, it was like one of those boards with all the strings connecting different things that all come to one big conclusion. They were all over the place.
Then it was Mikey and Calum in the middle and Luke was the baby. They were all amazing, genuine guys and you couldn’t have been happier to call them your friends.
You somehow had gotten on the topic of siblings at one point. Mikey doesn’t have any, but he was chessy when he said, “yeah but I have these guys as my brothers,” all the guys ahh’d and called him out on being cheesy but you could tell they were family.
Ashton talked more about his sister and brother, telling you about how his dad walked out on him and then his mom met his stepdad and they had Lauren and Harry before he eventually walked out too. Your heart hurt for him, because you knew just how that felt.
Luke has two brothers, Jack and Ben. You smiled and laughed as he told stories of his childhood and how he and all the guys got up too.
You told them all about your brother, Jaxon. How he was back home in Nashville playing baseball and how he dreamed of going pro.
Calum talked about his sister, how she visits every once and a while when she’s not in the studio or writing her own music.
“Yeah, Mali lives in London so I don’t get to see her much. We talk at least twice a week just to catch up. She’s supposed to visit in a few months so you’ll get to meet her soon,” he smiles over at you.
Mali is his sister? Well, that makes a whole lot of sense.
“That’s great, I can’t wait to meet her!” you tell him, smiling over at him happily.
You all talked for another hour or so, laughing and telling stories before you decided it was time to go. You said bye to everyone, hugging them and telling them you’d see them on friday when you and Alec met them at the studio after lunch.
Calum politely walked you home just to be safe.
“I had a great day, thank you for inviting us over. I know Elijah had a blast,” you tell him, smiling softly up at him. “You were so great with him, he’s normally pretty shy around new people.”
“I did too, we’ll have to do it again.” he tells you. “He’s a great kid, he’s so adorable,” he tells you, smiling.
“Definitely,” you nod up at him.
There was that awkward silence where you both just looked at each other, your eyes flicking between his as his eyes flicked over your face and fell to your plump lips. Your breath hitched as his eyes linger there before returning to your eyes.
“Goodnight, Y/n,” he whispers, pulling you into a tight hug.
You relax in his arms, hugging him back as your face hides in his neck. “Goodnight, Cal” you whisper back lingering in the hug before he kisses the top of your head and lets go.
“I’ll see you Friday,” he calls, descending the three steps of your  porch.
“See you friday!” you call back before walking into your house. Your back pressing to the back of your front door as you let out a sigh, closing your eyes.
“Oh my god! That was Calum Hood!,” you hear excitedly from your couch making your eyes pop wide open.

Tumblr media
oh ana u need to stop indulging me honestly u cant hold me accoutable for the shit i say all day long
ill just... put a few thoughts under the cut thats all
im not even saying that any of the following is in any... way... meant to be taken seriously. this is the biggest disclaimer that im a fic writer. fic as in fiction. not real. this is a big ass fucking joke. ok? got it? great.
then i'm gonna start off with the way these two are hiding in the back. from the beginning of that stream theyre hiding in the back, keeping it quiet, not by far engaging as much as mashton in the front, listening but also really not. and in the part that we're talking abt, they are listening for once, even if theyre not saying much. its like they agreed beforehand to keep to themselves. luke apparently also wanted to keep his hands to himself, seeing as he holding onto calum's bass. which, also, like why is he playing with calum's bass? he doen't play bass, not usually, for his album yeah but apart from that? and this isn't the first time either. cake switch instruments quite often, there are several photos especially of calum with one of luke's guitar. im just saying. its just implying that they might spend time w each other teaching the other maybe.
ok moving on now lets see how it starts off shall we. theres nothing in particular going on at first. theyre both watching, calum especially seems to be quite focused on it bc he later on doesn't look away or towards luke, but luke gets easily distracted suddenly when he accidentally touches calum. and like... thats not... unusal... these four men have spent hours on tiny couches squished together........ why do you even point it out hemmo. for why. thats the first thing that doesnt make sense to me. "i almost touched your hand", ok and? what abt it? is this unusual? did you think it would bother calum? why tf would it bother calum (it obviously doesn't)? did you agree beforehand not to touch each other hands or smth like WHAT IS THIS ABOUT. what is the reason. !! and why are you swallowing about it. and then the way he looks over to calum all provocatively. even raising his eyebrow. like hes waiting for calum to say something abt it. theres nothing inherently weird about it, he says it quite casually, but if this were a fic? you cant tell me they didnt like, agree beforehand to keep touching to a minimum and luke wants to find out if his 'slip up' provocates calum. like a little shit. and irl calum pauses when he says it. his fingers stop moving. sure he doesnt look over but like, ok, hes listening, he felt it maybe even, and now he apparently has to answer to luke's already unnecessary statement bc thats what he does. he doesnt look over so luke alreadys looks away again, apparently thinking that was it, but then calum says 'it's fine' which is, ok, normal response. nothing special. couldve kept it at that. but NO. they are LIKE THAT apparently. apparently theyre fight or flight reaction is physical touch. calum doesn't just say its fine NO he reaches out and caresses luke's thigh. not just nudging it, nope. fully on brushing his thigh with thumb and pointer finger like its no ones business. which it isnt. im just observing that's all. its just. its like he tryna say its okay. like he really has to reassure luke for whatever reason. and then they break into such wide smiles and for what. they act like no nones looking like there werent literally thousands of people. this was such a ?? private moment ??? its so soft and so quiet and gentle and i just think they have a very precious friendship and its just cute and drives me insane and im just losing my mind a little i think. that is all. thank you so much for listening. someone check me into a mental health facility i cannot believe i seriously typed all these goddamn words over a seven second clip. dont get into fandoms kids. stay offline. go and play outside im gonna go outside and touch some grass

A Huge Prompt List
Basically we all know I can’t resist a good prompt list, so when I saw @emwritesfootball doing this. I had to stop myself from doing it, I crumbled lol. So I am only blaming myself here and only me.  This is a huge prompt list I know, so I will take my time getting through it. But I thought it was a bit of fun and I loved all the prompts. Credit to the very talented page @creativepromptsforwriting who created these lists.  Request with the number as well as which list you are choosing from. I will write beside it who got which prompt. If you do any ideas for the prompt, let me know. Also if a prompt has been taken, I will see if I can do multiple players on that request for you. Enjoy reading through the huge list. x

i WANT! secret, touch, nose, small, quietly and heart <3 ly!!!
ARIA!! HELLO!! thank you for the variety! this is very interesting! ily 💜
apparently i don't have secret? hmm ok then
i had about a million touches, so i tried to chose an ~interesting~ one...
His mind was just playing a cruel and elaborate trick on him, he had to be dreaming or something because there was no way he was allowed to touch Luke like this, to be able to hear the little gasps and sighs that escaped his lips every time Calum did something just right, made him feel a little something of the unbearable load of love Calum had bottled up for Luke.
only one nose! and ofc its calum's <3
Calum rolls his eyes and rubs at his nose, which is probably an angry red by now. He really needs a tissue.
i only had two smalls, surprisingly.
Luke chooses to stay in his bedroom - pacing the whole length of it in just three strides, then back again, his arms spread open wide so the tips of his fingers are brushing along both the walls - because having the whole apartment to himself makes him feel stupidly small and lonely.
some michael content to shake it up a little <3
“Yeah, I know.” Michael’s voice is garbled from his hand squishing up his cheek. “But bed seems so far away,” he complains quietly, too tired to put any bite into it.
i also had a thousand hearts to choose from, so here's one i picked at random.
Luke can literally feel the heart emojis popping up in his eyes, and his ears are burning as he fights to keep the blush from creeping onto his cheeks. He should not be so flustered by Calum fixing his fucking hair. There’s something seriously wrong with him.
Send me a word, if it’s in my wip document I’ll answer your ask with the sentence that it appears in

happy 9 months to this bad bitch!!
it's sappy o'clock look away
yeah yeah another one of these
look, i won’t drone on about how shit this year has been we’re all well aware and past that. what i want to focus on is the joy and refuge that i have found here thanks to this album. i don’t think i have ever been this surprised and taken aback by an album before? in the best way possible. i was a casual listener at best, a local if you will. i knew the Hits i just never felt the urge to dive in...but that all changed as soon as i heard red desert. genuine and utter shock? no words to describe it really. i went down the youtube rabbit hole and well i’m a wholeass clown now. i don’t really contribute anything as i can’t edit, i don’t write, i never planned on immersing myself in the fandom per se. i thought i’d just come here to reblog pretty moving pictures and talk to myself in the tags, i had no idea i’d meet such kind and wonderful people and actually make friends? i’ve been in and out of So Many fandoms and never really found that sense of belonging to a community like i have here.
everyone i have come across has been so caring and kind and friendly. i appreciate the effort and love you put into each gifset and edit, every chapter written, memes and all. moreover, i have watched you all support each other through this difficult year and all the shitty hands we’ve been dealt and i couldn’t be more proud of each and every single one of you. simply for being here. know that my inbox is anon friendly and always open. keep on keeping on, i love you!! @karajaynetoday @kindahoping4forever @ashtcnirwin @blackbutterfliescal @cakelftv @mukeaf @mikeycliffords @bandsanitizer @calmfolklore @notinthesameguey @twilightmomentswithyou @ghost-of-you @ashesonthefloor @devilatmydoor @tekweela @ashtonsunshine @afterlows @sexgodashton  and a few more words to those of you who made the effort to talk to me bc god forbid i do something first @clumsyclifford bella!! you were the first one to reach out and welcome me here and i will never forget that. thank you for bringing nothing but positive vibes on the dash, and thank you for creating the club and extending me an invitation that i’m still too much of a wuss to accept. discord and group chats can be overwhelming and i’d just end up lurking but i appreciate it sm♥ @rebelwith0utacause ana, my yugosos partner in crime!! where do i even begin? knowing there’s someone else from around here has made me feel right at home; thank you for the laughs, your cool older sis vibes, and everything else in between!! i am proud of you for kicking rona’s ass, working so hard, and being such a good pup mom and carer for mocha ♥живе биле велике порасле, ве сакам♥ @compulsiveidiota gigi my love. thank you. i enjoy our music talks immensely, not to mention yelling at each other during random michael/luke/muke photos spam sessions. please keep them coming. keep on bowling, barking, biting mean people, and being awesome♥
@wheniminouterspace shal. my fav crying-to-mitski pal. i hope you’re catching some zzzs rn and i can’t wait to see you wake up to new luke content!!!!!! also wayf supremacy!! had to put that out there. thank you for our always chaotic chats i enjoy them endlessly. i love youuu♥
@redrattlers em!!! i am still so amazed at how much our music/tv show/movie tastes match i could cry. the shared brain cell is strong in this one. i just know we would be the best of friends if only we knew each other irl too thank you for helping me spread the nbt agenda here. for sharing such good music with me. for listening to my playlists? just for being rad as hell. i love your edits, i love your energy, i love having you as a firend, i love you♥

@himbocalum hi nat!! i remember we started talking thanks to a music ask thingy and me just calling you nat right away as if we’ve known each other forever bc it felt too formal to use your full name shfjlsd. it is always a pleasure to see you on my dash sending plenty of calum content my way. still blows my mind you sat down and listened to a wholeass album bc i wouldn’t stop talking about it. and then checked out the other albums too. and indulged me and let me talk your ear off about them. thank you, i love you and i still chuckle every time i see your url. iconic♥

No Shame (cake one shot)
Title and lyrics from No Shame by 5SOS
Summary: Calum just can’t get enough of Luke wearing his silver chain necklace.
Warnings: smutty sloppy blowjob and some face-fucking. Mostly chain tugging.
you can also read it on ao3 here!
Angel, with the gun in your hand
Pointing my direction, giving me affection
Love is fatal
Won’t you give it a chance?
Center of attention
Don’t you ask me any questions
Luke’s been riling up Calum all damn day at their Easier music video shoot.
Tugging on his restraints around his hands that are above his head, the younger lad perks his bum out a bit, leather material tugging on his full ass. Luke even turns around after to give the older lad these sultry eyes that are gone in a flash when the director calls his attention.
Calum knows that even though the spotlight makes Luke’s anxiety spike, the blond loves to ride that anxiety, that adrenaline, and work his magic to make the cameras love him.
Even though Luke is talking to the director, he can feel calum’s eyes on him, staring him down, trying to get his attention back to continue with their teasing. Calum’s eyes train on Luke’s hand as it slowly moves up to fidget with his silver chain necklace. The blond mindlessly tugs on it a few times, metal pressing lightly into pale skin.
Desire slowly simmered underneath calum’s skin for the rest of the shoot, ending when the sun went down.
It wasn’t until the two of them got home that Calum finally had the chance to show Luke how much he drives him to the edge with want.
They settle in the living room, squished against each other on the couch even though there’s enough room for 3 people. The television hums lowly in the background, some late-night talk show playing.
“You did so well today, babe. Really worked the cameras too. You’re such a rock star.” Calum runs his hands through the blond’s deflated curls, as Luke snuggles deeper into calum’s chest, all pooped out from working all day.
A shy grin appears on Luke’s lips, pressing into calum’s skin. When they got home, Calum went straight up stairs to change into something comfier, opting for no shirt and some low hanging joggers. Luke on the other hand was too tired to change from his set clothes. Luke cuddled into Calum, still wearing his silver chain necklace along with a black tank top, and those sinful leather pants, jacket and shoes forgotten by the door.
Calum starts mindlessly playing with Luke’s chain, fingertips lightly touching Luke’s pale neck, feeling his pulse quicken when the brunet tugs on it, testing the waters.
Luke’s head instantly snaps up to look at Calum whose eyes are suddenly dark, pupils blown with desire that’s threatening to overflow. From where Luke’s legs are tangled with calum’s, Luke slowly hikes his left leg up, pressing against calum’s growing erection.
A soft gasp comes out of Luke’s lips as slowly feels the desire and lust start to overtake him. Excitement grows in the front of Luke’s leather pants.
“Luke, pet, can we try something?” Calum intently looks into Luke’s blue orbs, feeling the blond nod against his chest, eyes never leaving his.
“C’mere.” A tattooed hand tugs lightly on the chain, gently pulling him up towards calum's lips. A soft sigh escapes Luke’s mouth right before they close the gap that’s left between their lips, locking instantly together.
Go on and light me like a cigarette
Even if it might be something you regret
You got me now, now, now
The kiss quickly turns filthy quick, spit gathering on the edges of their mouths. Luke starts grinding from where he lays on top of calum, hips brushing every other thrust into calum’s erection. Soft moans bounce off the living room walls as the television continues to play, neglected in the corner of the room.
A harder yank of the chain necklace pulls a gasp out of Luke, detaching their wet lips. A louder moan comes right after it, Luke grinding harder against Calum. The brunet’s eyes are hungry, but the older boy pauses for a moment, searching his boyfriend’s face of any discomfort.
“Do you like it when I tug on your chain, Luke?” As if to punctuate the question, Calum yanks hard on the chain, red marks beginning to form from where it tugs harshly against Luke’s pale throat.
Luke’s eyes begin to open, previously closed. He’s still steadily grinding on his boyfriend’s dick, feeling the sweet hot heat of pleasure lick from his inside out.
Luke’s eyes slowly focus on calum’s, taking a moment to catch his breath before he speaks.
“I.. I love it, actually. I love how it marks me up, Iove how you’re the one doing it to me. Love how you take control. Love it. Love you.” A smile appears on both their lips as the blond kisses the brunet once more, continuing where they left off.
Breaking the kiss a few moments later, Calum huffs out his next question, trying to catch his breath.
“Can you suck my cock, Luke?” The blond wastes no time when he goes to tug down calum’s loose joggers, the older lad’s erected cock springing out from under the pants. Luke drools at the sight, hungry to feel its weight upon his tongue. The blond runs a hand through his own curls, moving hair out of his face as his body moves down calum’s tanned body. He wipes a hand over his mouth, removing the spit that’s gathered.
Swallow me down, down, down, down
Luke hungrily swallows down Calum, the tip of his cock instantly pressing against the back of the blond’s mouth. One of calum’s hands comes up to tangle itself into lukes curls. The other holds tight onto the chain, yanking it harshly.
Lay me in the palm of your hand
I’ll give you my permission
You’ll always be forgiven
A low whine hums around calum’s leaking cock as he begins to facefuck Luke. Luke harshly pressed down onto his erection, which has been neglected up until now. He loves the feeling of being used by Calum. Just a slutty open mouth for him to fuck. Luke swirls that tongue of his around the tip of calum’s cock, taking a breath, then sinking back down, jaw jutted out, straining to gather all of calum’s cock into his mouth. Spit gathers and slops down onto calum’s thighs but no one cares about the mess they were making, it was far too fun to stop now.
Go on, replace me
When you’re craving something sweeter than the words I left in your mouth
Luke’s eyes are hooded, hazy, mind filled with a pleasant cloudiness that he welcomes with open arms. Luke eyes glisten with tears with how harsh Calum’s pumping into his mouth, jaw slack to accommodate the huge size. Low grunts are coming out of calum’s mouth as his rhythm continuously pounds into Luke’s eager mouth. Spit slathers everywhere, lips, groin, hair, everywhere. When Luke moves his hands to jerk the base, Calum removes the hand that was in the blond’s locks before he shoves Luke’s hands away.
“No hands, Hun. Just your mouth, ok?” calum says breathlessly. He’s slouched down low on the couch now, sweat glistening on his forehead. Forehead creased, brows furrowed as he shuts his eyes tight, feeling his climax incoming. Calum yanks the chain one last time, this one the harshest one yet. Red marks ring around Luke’s throat like some beast had had their way with him. And in a way, he has. Luke hands comes up to feel his throat, fingers feeling the divots that the chain has made into his skin. Mind and body in nirvana, Luke’s body slouches on the couch as he comes in his pants.
Go on and spit me out
With a loud shout of Luke’s name, Calum comes down Luke’s throat, the blond’s lips coming up around the tip as luke sucks. Swirling his tongue the gather every last drop, he swallows calum’s load with a loud gulp.
I love the way you’re screaming my name
I love the way you’re screaming my name
I love the way you’re screaming my name

The Boyfriend Tag [Calum Hood Edition]
Summary: an unfiltered interview featuring Calum Hood and his girlfriend.
Words: 4.7k
Tumblr media
“Hello! I’m Calum Hood, from 5 seconds of summer” He greets to the camera.
“My name is (Y/n) and I am dating this guy. Today! we are going to be answering this tag thing” I answer in a more excited tone, as I point at the camera.
“The whole band has done it, it’s only fair I do it as well” He mentions  “We’re currently at home, where we all should be” He says, looking at the surroundings of our sweet home “...so we have more than enough time to get to this”
I smile “And here it is”
                                                       _______
How did we first meet?
“Through friends” Calum explains shortly “it was nothing super special, sadly, she just happened to be friends with one of my friends and that’s how it happened” he shrugged.
There was really not much to tell, Our story simply happened in a very natural way.
“My friend invited me to LA and I met him in...If I’m not mistaken it was at a brunch party?” I explain.
“You’d be right” he nods  “then a series of things happened and she ended up joining our team”
I smile to the camera “In case you didn’t know. I’m a music editor, I like producing and tweaking, so you could say we would see each other a lot” I shrug.
“And things happened, went on a couple of dates, did my magic…” he added, moved his fingers in front of the camera in a funky way and finished with a “...and here we are”.
Where was our first date?
“We went to a concert” I exclaimed, growing really excited at the memory “it was crazy, we literally started with a bang”
“Yep and it wasn’t planned at all” he laughs, rubbing his jaw with his hand as he spoke “I originally had the plan to go with Ashton to this Chainsmokers show, we wanted to take advantage of that to talk with Drew and Alex after, but Ashton got really sick and since I had the ticket and couldn’t just let it go to waste, I asked this beauty to go with me” he said, reaching over to squish my cheek.
I move away as an instinct, but I love it.
“It was awesome, those guys really put up a good show” I add, smiling as I spoke “I got really drunk that night”
Fun fact. I don’t know what came over to me the night of our first date, but for some reason, alcohol played a big part that night, it was embarrassing, but it was worth it. After all, we made a great memory out of it.
“Tell me about it” Calum said, rolling his eyes.
I blushed, but before he could say anything else, I swang over to him and covered his mouth “Shhh” I giggle, scotting over to his side “He kind of babysat me, sorry babe” I said, uncovering his mouth.
“Kind of?” he asked with a sarcastic tone “Geez, I can’t even answer to that. Next question, I don’t want to tell this story” he said, shaking his head.
I roll my eyes “Drama queen” I shrug “I got drunk and he had to take care of the rest, it was both fun and weird”.
“Next” he states, passing on to the next question.
What was your first impression of me?
I have to take a moment to answer this question, not because I don’t know what I like, but because I struggle remembering what exactly was that caught my attention. It only took me a few seconds to answer.
“My first impression of you was that you were really quite but still very present in the room” I speak first “it’s hard to explain, because we literally met in the middle of a conversation but basically” I try to explain, shifting a little in my place  “I remember standing in one place and hearing stories from other people, I was completely not familiar with anything, I didn’t know any of them so everything they said was pretty much new, but you always had a fun insert to add, even though you barely spoken that was something that stood out for me a lot” I say, nodding towards him.
“Mine was more or less the same, actually” he says, acting surprised about my answer “because you’re always very quiet when being on a crowd and that stuff, you always stand back from having too much attention” he explain. “it’s funny because, the first day I met you I remember, I greeted you and all, we didn’t really talked to each other and I didn’t hear you talk either, however, when our food delivery came in the first thing I heard you say was ‘yo, I bet you can’t sniff of this paprika’” he says, a smile growing on his face, until full giggles starting coming out of his lips.
“Did you really had to say that on camera?” I sigh, acting annoyed, but I really wasn’t.
“It was hilarious” he says, still laughing.
I know this is a fact that kind of embarrass me, but watching laugh it off was completely priceless.
When did you meet my family?
“I met your family on the day you launched your third album” I start answering the question, as soon as he finishes reading.  “it was such a big moment and you flew everyone in, it was the first time I ever got to interact with your mother and -well- everyone, as your girlfriend and not just a friend” I explain “also it was the first time I stayed over at your place for more than two nights”
“It was a extended pijama party” he mention, nodding at the camera with a serious look “no, uh, there’s a reason behind all that. When it came to this situations, I very much preferred for her to stay at mines while my family was in there than to have her alone at her apartment, so I took the chance” He shrugged, reaching over to pat my tight. “It was fun!”
“It was very fun” I nod agreeing “I love how your mom takes the lead in the kitchen and no matter what you say, she is the one in charge” I laugh, remembering all those discussion for who was the first cooking dinner at the house.
“Mom doesn’t love my cooking” Calum admits with a sigh.
I nod “I don’t know why, if I’m honest”  I add“She makes some exceptional fish and chips though, it’s just...”
I have to close my eyes to add some drama into all these. I loved food, and that was definitely one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. I knew Cal’s mom loved to cook, and it was an honour for me to try her meals, they were heaven on earth.
“Yeah I know” he chuckles “How did I meet yours?” he asks to himself and sighs  “I didn’t”
My jaw tenses a little, I don’t know how I didn’t see this coming but I didn’t care at all.
“I’m an orphan, don’t cry for me, I’m fine, I don’t need to talk about it” I state, moving over to his side and hugging him “you are my family”
He smiles softly at me. “Yes I am, baby” he says kissing my forehead. “Next”
Who said “I love you” first?
“Eh...I did” I admit, with a shy smile on my face “guilty” I add, raising my hand.
“She did” he seconds, pointing at him. “it was adorable”
That phrase made me cringe for some reason. Not that I denied it wasn’t adorable, it was just some awkward moment that I came out of me and I still feel unsure of. I am not often the one who speaks up, so doing this was pretty ballsy.
“Was it?” I ask, unsure “It was too soon, I dont know...”
“It was alright, really” he says, shaking his head and going over to rub on my arm a little “we were having one of our famous, drink and watch, where we watch movies and every time something specific happens, we drink a shot” he starts telling the story, also making the fun add on of our usual date nights.
“And I was like, woooh woooh” I say, trying to imitate that very moment. I lean over him, and leaning my head too close to his, I press my head on his cheek and whisper “I loaf you, Cayum” making it coming out as a loud muffled sound.
“God dammit” he giggles moving away just a little “I mean, it did sound like that, but it was cute and I said it back” he says, rounding his arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer.
“At first I felt weird because I thought I shouldn’t have said it right there at that moment, but if I’m honest” I add “I was fine”
“We were fine” he continues, leaning in to kiss my temple “more than fine”
What dressing do I always wear?
I look at him up and down.  It’s kind of funny, because with this whole situation, we both happen to be in our pajamas, so our dressing code has been turned around for the moment. My vision of what he could be wearing on the daily has been distorted.
“Pfff” I sigh “I don’t know, I really don’t” I confess. “You are very weird with fashion, I must say, I don’t think you often wear the same thing” I say, looking over at him.
“I sure do, I can think of a couple things” He says, smiling at me with a teasing smile, silently encouraging me to think.
“Well, you do wear hoodies often, at home mostly” I say, being the first thing I can think of
“Like this one, actually, it’s like your morning hoodie” I giggle, reaching over to tug on the hood.
He was wearing that very soft white hoodie he would reach over to every morning, if there was a little bit of a breeze out there. She loved it, it was a nice piece of clothing to hug him in.
“There you go, see?” He chuckles, shaking his head  “Mine is easy because every day of your life you wear socks that reach your ankles and beyond” He smiles, looking down at my feet and staring at my socks.
“Ding ding ding!” I celebrate, smiling at him “You are so right!” I laugh.
He nods, he knows he was right.
“Show the public, please” he suggests, giving me the honours.
“I have pineapples today” I say, lifting my foot as much as I can and holding it up to the camera. “Yesterday I had dogs and I have all kind of patterns, I love collecting socks” I smile, looking down at the pretty pattern and admiring it.
“It’s a fun thing to collect, I like it a lot actually” He admits, staring at it too “Do you have your 5SOS socks already?” he asks, as I lower my leg to its previous position.
I roll my eyes “Oh, shut it” I groan, he breaks to laugh and he knows why.  “you didn’t let me design socks for your merch, now I don’t want anything” I say, scooting away from him
“Right” he laughs, shaking his head and laughing “Next question”.
Weird habit of each other?
“I know one of yours” he says before I can even answer. He turns to me, looking at me with a mysterious smile. “I’m going to leave it at your choice, should I tell or should I not?”
I look at him with the same look he gives to me, trying to see in him what he had in mind. I might have some weird habits, I was just hoping he wouldn’t pull out the worst.
“Shoot”  I say, glaring at him.
“Everything you do, you find a way to relate it to a meme” he says, looking straight at me and laughing as he speaks “I don’t even know how you do it, you just do”
“Oh man! that’s not that bad, but I wasn’t expecting that at all” I laugh as well, finding it kind of funny that we went in with this one “I don’t think you have a bad habit, but, if I must say one, I would say your silence” I say slowly, not really sure if that even count. “you are one quite soul, Cal” I add, bumping our shoulders together
“Am I?” He says, raising an eyebrow up as he spoke.
I nod  “It’s like, sometimes  I ask you something and you just do this” I explain, resting my head over my chin and looking straight at him, saying nothing but still saying much. “I’m not a mind reader, pal” I mumble, still looking at him.
He leans over and touches my forehead with his, looking at me straight in the eyes and mumbling.  “You should know what it means”
I roll my eyes. “Uh huh”
He would never admit his silence was weird, but that’s okay, it was something of him that I really liked.
How long have we been together?
“Almost two years” Calum says, his voice sounding sort of surprised as he spoke.
“It doesn’t feel like two years, how scary” I add, leaning my head on his shoulder “I feel like time really flies lately, these past two years between working with you, having all these changes and moving to this city, I felt like it’s only been a couple months” I mention, reflecting about all of the little things that have led us to this moment.
“That happens when you’re having fun baby”
I smile, bumping my shoulder to his “It’s been the best two years, I hope you know that”
What was our first road trip?
“Here’s the thing” he says, taking the lead “We often do small road trips to little parts of the city, so I would dare to say our first road trip together was... Mexico?” he says, looking at me in doubt.
“I think so, I’m not sure” I say, thinking about it as well. “but I think our most special trip was not even a road trip, it was a full on trip, remember?”
He frowns a little, turning to look at me looking for more clues. I didn’t gave more information away, if he knows, he knows.
“Which one?” He asks, still thinking about it.
“The first trip we did together, we were around 8 months, I would say” I say, still maintaining the mystery, until I decided to drop it.  “We went to Australia, made a stop for three days and then New Zealand” I explain.
“Oh that’s right! yeah, you are right” he nods energetically at my answer. “We went visiting my family and exploring, it was a whole deal” he explain, now with a smile on his face.
“I think that even counts as a road trip, we used your uncle’s jeep, visited some awesome places” I say, smiling as well “I loved it, I always wanted to go to Auckland and having the chance of exploring the city was the best thing ever”
He nods, agreeing with me. That particular trip was the first trip we ever did together as a couple and it was worth every second.
“I had fun too, it was a very special time” He agrees. “Fun fact, a song came out of that trip, and you would never guess which one, but if you do, let me know and I might tell a story” He states, pointing at the camera, and looking at it with a completely serious look.
“Please do, guess” I chuckle at that statement “That story is going to fuck me up”
First thing you noticed about me?
“Now this is a question I like a lot” Calum states, sitting up straight and getting excited about his answer “Here’s the thing, the first time I met you was on this brunch thing and it was... a private event” he starts “it was interesting because in this event they had like a whole dancing thing, musicians, a DJ... the thing is, there was a particular moment of the event where they were playing jazz and the way she lost it while listening to that... that was priceless” he noticed, smiling at me “the way you lose yourself with music it’s something I won’t ever get tired of” he said in honest words.
That statement made my heart warm up. Those were one of the most adorable things he had ever said to me.
“Thank you” I said, with a hand on my chest. “The first thing I noticed about you is how good you are with words” I said, as part of my answer “I think some people, especially guys, sometimes come out as assholes when they want to cause a good impression, but surprisingly, he was the first guy who when he first came up to me, I felt comfortable” I shrug, looking at the camera and smiling softly.
There was really not much to say, I felt like my answer said a lot.
Calum smiled softly at me and reached my place, and while he caught me in his arms he mumbled “Come here”.
And then we fall onto the floor, as we washes me in kisses.
Tell us a fun fact about you
We both stare blankly at different points as we think of an answer. It should be easier than this, but for some reason, it is being more difficult than we thought to come up with a good answer to fill in this question. We could say so many things, but none of them would be the most appropriate one for this.
“Fun fact” I start, after our moment of silence “the first time we kissed, very first time, I was really drunk, but I would say, it wasn’t that noticeable or at least that’s what I thought”
I see Calum notices what I am saying right away, because once I start my story, his face goes from a frown to a surprised expression very quickly. Suddenly everything taking a bit of sense for him.
“I know where you’re going” he says, shaking his head.
“He asked me how it felt, like the kiss, how I felt about it” I continue  “and I said ‘Ew’”
I wish I could help it, but everytime I tell a story like this, I can’t help but breaking to laugh, without having enough control over myself. I almost have to lay back, because I am laughing so much I can hardly sit still, but I don’t do that, I just hold on to my boyfriend and do my thing. I was such a fun story, the embarrassing part of it worn off completely by how funny it was.
“That was the most discouraging moment of my life” He explains, joining as well into my little laughing fit and shaking his head.
“I know, I’m sorry” I said, cleaning a small tear off my eye “I didn’t mean it! I was drunk, plus, I think I say ew and ouch out of its context more times that I could count” I mention.
“Now, that is very true” he says, laughing as well as he turns his look back at the camera and mumbles “Next question”
Tell us a secret
“No” Calum says.
So we move on to the next question.
What am I good at?
“She’s excellent at cooking the best things in the worst times” Calum explains as soon as he’s given the chance “and what I mean by this is that, most of the time when there’s a storm or, just like a month ago, we were confined and she would do deserts like everyday, It was so good I would forget for a second about what was surrounding me” He admitted, looking at me for a second before going back at the camera.
“I’m glad you like it”  I smile, suddenly feeling very excited. “I do instagram lives every time I cook, It’s a lot of fun” I add.
He nods “You see me in the back, like, ‘what’s that white spongy thing?’” he mentions, making a weird voice just for laughs.
I giggle. “What’s that white dust on the table?”  I follow, completely being aware of the double-sense.
“Is that mint? Or cilantro?” He adds.
“Oh geez” I laugh, at that last one. “People roast me in the comments all the time, because I make stuff like, burritos, or maybe chicken teriyaki, and then you come over and can’t eat anything” I roll my eyes, shaking my head at the camera.
He presses his lips together at my mention and nods.
“I don’t eat meat” he mentions, shrugging “but I don’t mind at all, I don’t care if you eat meat”
I nod “I always prepare like one ratio and leave some for if you wanna try, but…” I shrug “I wouldn’t tease you into it”
“I know babe” He says, going to reach my cheek and pinch it.
I move away from his touch as I say “I’m not even going to answer this so… next!”
Favorite feature about each other?
“His face is the stretchiest ever” I say with excitement in my voice.
Without a doubt, I get up and walk right behind him, because I just need to do something. It's a necessity, this is something I do on the daily, showing the public was something I wanted to do so badly.
“Look at this” I said, placing my hands on his cheeks and squishing them…stretching… squishing… stretching… squishing… I had so much fun.
“I have so much fun doing this, it’s like playdough in my hands” I say, caressing my boyfriends face.
“Okay, alright” he laughs, taking my hands away from his face. “My favourite thing is this” he says, still holding onto my hands and suddenly tugging on them hard.
Before I even noticed, he was grabbing both of my arms together, and with great skill, he pulled my whole body over his shoulders, and as he got up from his seat and walked back.
“What?!” I yelled loudly “Put me down!”
He does as I said, and as he walked to the back of the room, he let me down right beside him.
“She’s so tiny” he laughed, ruffling my hair playfully “I can carry her in my bag”
I rolled my eyes “No, I’m not” I whined “Stop”
He laughed again, and as he lifted his arm, and rested his elbow on my head.  “See this (Y/n) to Calum ratio” he mocks “I’m half a person”
“Perfect size” I giggle, pushing him aside playfully. “Now that you’ve exposed my height, can we keep going please?” I say, almost begging.
If we kept going with this, I could easily turn from funny to not so funny anymore.
What do we argue about the most?
Once again, we stay quiet for a good second, but not because we don’t know, it’s because there was really not an specific answer we could give. I don’t we even knew what to say.
“I would say, the majority of times, we argue for the most dumb things you could imagine” I say, answering for the both of us  “But about serious things, it’s something very rare” I shrug.
“I think our trending topic when discussing about something, it’s about me misspelling words when writing, and her losing it” he says, pointing at us and totally throwing me a look.
“Dude” I sigh “Because then people will read and take it the wrong way, not cool” I argue.
“It doesn’t matter, you just explain” he shrugs, completely not caring.
“You need to listen, that’s what you need to do” I roll my eyes  “Read a book, punk” I let out.
His eyes widen at my answer. “Oh is that it?” He says looking at me directly.
I crack a smile, going to hug him, before he thought I was serious about this. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding” I let him know.
I would never tell him something like that on purpose.
Nicknames for each other?
I sigh. “Sadly, I don’t have anything other than Cal, and all the regular sappy nicknames” I shrug  “I know I’m terrible, sue me, I don’t care”
I speak honestly, all super creative nicknames were over thought and they could be weird sometimes. I was too classy to use anything overly new.
“That’s mean, because I do have a couple of names for you” he mentions “Sweetie pie, Baby… The others I can’t reveal” he says slowly, patting my thigh with his hand.
my nose scrunches “Why?” I ask.
“They’re very confidential, you should know that”  he says, shaking his head.
I shrug. “If I’m honest, I don’t know” I giggle “But I’ll keep the secret if that’s what you want”
He smiles, and leaving kiss on my cheek, we move on to the next question.
Complete this sentence “You’re my……..”?
“Oh, this is the famous question” he says after reading the question out loud. A smile cracking on his face as he looked at me.
“Was there a famous question?” I asked, raising my eyebrow.
“All the guys were talking about this one, I’m sure you guys are enjoying this” he smiled at the camera and pointing at It. “Luke’s girl cried” he mentioned to me.
My eyes widen “Did she?” I say, my mouth forming a pout “Oh man, I haven’t seen that” I sigh “You first”
He nods, already knowing that he would be the one taking the lead first.
“You are my saviour” he says, going to grab my hand. “I know it might sound sappy and you hate it, but it’s the truth. Before you I was a lonely guy, even when I had friends, I still felt pretty lonely, and I really appreciate the fact that I found someone who I can talk to, share moments… someone who I can lean on, It’s something that really gets me thinking… If it wasn’t for you, I would be sad” he says, pressing his lips together as he looked at me.
“Really?” I asked in a whisper. He nods. “Cal…”
I wish I could keep it together, but hearing him say something like this… I’m front of a camera. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, we’ve been in these kinds of situations before, but right now, it felt different, and it felt special.
“No, baby, don’t” he chuckles when sees my eyes starting to Glow. “See?” He tells the camera with a smile.
“I don’t even know what to say…” I sigh, shaking my head “You’re my partner” I say smiling. “Probably sounds weird, because it’s obvious, but I mean it, you’re my best friend, I love spending time with you, I always look forward to be with you and have you by my side, I can tell you everything and I trust you more than anyone, I think being with you is without a doubt, the best decision I have ever taken in my life” I admit.
The grin on his face is a real one, and once I finish with my words, he gives a squeeze to my hands, and leaves a kiss in both of them.
“Come here, baby” he whispers, pulling my into his arms. “I love you, I love you, I love you” he says, kissing my cheek a lot.
“You’re squishing me” I laugh “I love you so much, a million times, more than you do”
And more than he could imagine…
                                                    _____
“So, this was our version of the girlfriend and boyfriend tag, I hope you enjoyed” I say first, as I smiled to the camera.
“We also hope this brought you enough entertainment during this time, we for sure had a good time doing it” He continues for me, waving at the camera. “Until the next time, and remember to stay safe, bye!”
With this, we both lift our hands, and wave energetically at the camera, we turn of the camera, and our version of this tag was completed.
It was a wrap!.

seven. the middle. poly!malum x reader
a/n: i am behind but i'm getting caught up. here is 7/25. i don't write poly often, and i especially don't write it as like... something soft. it's usually thirsty and smutty so this was a nice change of pace. also, i love the idea of poly!malum. i didn't know i had that spoft spot before today, but here i am. anyway, if you'vw bwwn ewXHINF, RHnk tou ao muxh!
---
everyone wanted the middles spot. for the most part calum was okay being the bread on the sandwich, leaving you and mikey to squabble over who got to be in the middle mikey liked to be tangled with you in front with calum's chest flush against his back, with all six of your legs in a tangled mess, duke kaying where ever he could fit within them.
"you wanna go to bed?" your voice was quiet, a hand absently running through calum's hair as he laid his lead in your lap. today had been weird. you couldn't put your finger on it exactly, but while everything seemed okay nothing felt quite... right.
he shrugged a response against you and you kept the movement of your hand through his hair as your eyes rested on the trash reality tv show you were watching before you flicked your eyes over to the other sofa where michael was laid out, half snoozinf hs way through whatever was happening. you could feel your eyes drooping but tjere was no part of you that was willing to mvoe while calum seemed so comfortable where he was, so you sat, running one hand through his hair while you rubbed his back with the other. it was his tiny snore that had you looking back down at him, his eyes closed, mouth slightly hanging open. you looked back at michael, biting down on your lip as you finally decided someone needed to get the three of you to bed.
"hey, baby," you rubbed calum's back a little firmer, your voice a little louder, making sure michael could hear you across the living room. there was never any distinguishing which one of them you were addressing with the nickname. it just came out naturally when either of them were around.
michael turned his head to look at you and you nodded down at calum in your lap, rubbing his arm just a little more.
"you'd both feel so much better sleeping in the bed," you spoke to them both as you felt calum stir, groaning a little and opening his eyes. you nodded ad you looked town at him, nudging him to sit while you let your eyes rest back on michael.
"you're gonna wake up sore as fuck or something," you added, finally moving to stand when calum was sitting on the couch. your socked feet carried you across the room to where michael was still laying, a hand running through his hair as you stoof behind the couch he was laying on. you leaned over the back, a leg in the air as you stretched a bit to reach him, plopping a kiss to his forehead before whispering.
"cal feels sad, take him to bed, i'll get the dog," you instruced. as if on cue, yo felt tiny paws at your leg, smiling down at duke as you straightened up, leading him to the back door a moment later. you let the dog out to do what he needed, making sure his food and water bowls were full before making sure the coffee maker was set for your early morning tomorrow before letting him back in. you had been putting away dinner leftovers that were on the counter when you felt a pair of amrs wram around you, the only clue to who's they were without looking directly down at them was his smell. michael.
"he's been like that all day," he spoke quietly as he pressed a kiss to thetop of your hair and you ndded a response, biting down on your lip again as you thought about it.
"did you ask him why?" you finally spoke after a moment, your hands finishing wrapping the bowl with plastic before turning in michael's arms, looking up at him with a brow raised.
"didn't wanna push him." he responded with a thoughtful expression on his face and you ndded, nose wrinkling.
"i know you guys work better when you let him come to you but sometimes he needs a push," you spokw quietly. it was then that you heard calum's voice break through the kitchen.
"will you stop talking about me," he called you out point blank, coming up behind michael and pressing his forehead to michael's shoulder. you leaned in, lips meeting hair and kissing him there as you moved your arms, letting them wrap around them both as best as you could.
"just concerned," you mumble against him, one of your hand rubbing at calum's side, the other rubbing at michael's before you pull away from the embrace, reaching for the bowl. a moment later, calum's hands are on the bowl too, giving you a pointed look and taking it from you to put in the fridge.
"can we just go to bed," he says as he turns to look at you both and you nod your head, giving him a little smile as you walk back up to him, hugging him directly. it takes a second before michael is behind you, squishing you between their bodies.
"we can, but you're sleeping in the middle tonight," you mumble. their quiet sleepy laughter hits your ears at the same time, each starly different from the other but so familiar in the way they both make you feel right at home. that's when it hits you.
"are you homesick?" you can't help the words from slipping out of your mouth as you speak them. it's been a rough year. normally both men would be getting ready with flights home for the holiday's set. they love you, so it's not a bad thing that the world seems to have held them  hostage here. but while michael has had an american christmas before, calum  hasn't.
"just muss my mum," he admits after a moment and you nod your head. it makes sense now.
"me too," michael adds quietly and for the first time you can hear how much he misses home.
"well," you start as you wiggle your way out of the hug, looking up at them both, eyes flicking from calum's face to michael's and back again. "i don't know what to do with this because there's only one middle spot and you both can't have it,"
calum bursts into laughter at that and you smile a little.
"well. being in the middle fixes everything," you defend yourself, reaching out your hands, grabbing ahold of each of theirs as you lead them towrad the bedroom.
"she's not wrong. you should really try demanding to be the middle spoon more," nichael adds as he follows. "she usually gives in if you whine hard enough," he adds, and you give him a playful glare.
"just for that you're never sleeping in the middle again," all three of you know the threat is empty.

Author's Note: MY GUYYYYS. IT'S FINALLY FINISHED. I've been working on this ever since @galcalirwin and I went to the beach last month. And it's finally done. A lot of slowburn. A l o t. Oops. I really hope you all like this. I worked hard on it 😩 also this basic ass title tho lmfao
You look out at the ocean, admiring the silence of the now-empty beach as the day slowly becomes night. A sigh leaves your lips as you step onto the sand, feeling it squish under your feet. You walk up to the shore before taking a seat in the sand, the water just reaching your toes.
You tuck a strand of hair behind your ear as you slowly try to forget about the events that happened tonight. You rest your arms atop of your knees, watching the waves crash on the shore.
Ashton leaves his house with his board pressed to his hip, his hazel eyes finding you sitting on the empty beach. He furrows his eyebrows, confused to see another person on the beach that's always empty at night. The black-haired man walks closer to you and takes a glance back as he makes his way into the water.
You jump as a man walks past you, not hearing him at all. You press your hand to your chest, feeling your heart pounding. You watch as he gives you a small smile while walking into the ocean, surfboard in hand.
Neither of you said anything as he swam out farther, being intrigued by this cute man that apparently surfs at eight pm. You softly bite your lip, fumbling with your fingers as you continue to watch him. You glance back towards the house you were staying in and see everyone on the back patio, having a good time.
When you glance back towards the ocean the mysterious man is nowhere to be found. Your eyes widen and you stand up quickly, your heart pounding in your chest as you begin to worry. You take a couple of steps into the water when the man surfaces from the water.
A breath of relief leaves your lips as you take a few steps back, slowly lowering yourself back onto the sand. "Y/N! Come on, love," yells one of the guys who's been overly flirting with you all night.
"Just a minute," you call back, not ready to leave the serenity you're in. You glance back to see everyone walking inside while you draw random shapes on your knees.
"Are you new here?" A voice asks and you jump, placing both your hands in the sand as your eyes dart up to the black-haired stranger in front of you. Giggles leave his lips while ruffling his wet locks, setting the surfboard on the ground.
"I-Yeah, kinda," you answer him and you push yourself off the ground. "I'm Y/N, which you might've heard just a bit ago."
The man grins and nods his head before holding his hand out to you. "Ashton," he introduces and you smile at him, taking his hand in yours. You shake it gently before clasping your hands together, feeling a bit nervous.
"Do you usually go surfing at night?" You ask him, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear as the wind begins to pick up.
He smiles down at me and glances towards the semi-large waves crashing. "Yeah, it's more peaceful than doing it during the day and I hate getting up early," Ashton tells you and you chuckle softly, nodding your head.
"Makes sense. I also hate getting up early. Definitely a night owl," you mention and Ashton picks his surfboard up from the ground. "I-Do you think you'll be here tomorrow night? I'd like to chat again if you're down for it…"
"Yeah, I definitely want to chat again," he smiles at you and you couldn't help but feel butterflies soar around in your stomach, smiling back at him. "I'll see you tomorrow, Y/N."
"See you, Ashton," you mumble and watch him walk away and he glances back at you once more before you decide to head back to the house. You smile to yourself the entire time as you quietly step into the giant place, hearing the voices of your friends coming from the other room.
Your best friend walks into the kitchen as you toss a couple of pieces of popcorn in your mouth. You give her a small smile as she hops up onto the counter, a smirk on her lips. "Who was the boy?" She asks and you scoff, chuckling a bit.
"Just a guy who lives nearby. Apparently he surfs at night," you inform her and she nods her head.
"Was he cute?" She questions while wiggling her eyebrows and you roll your eyes at her.
You grab some more popcorn, shoving it into your mouth, and nod your head. "From what I could see, yeah, he was cute," you mention and move to the fridge to grab a drink.
"Y/N! There you are. Where have you been?" Derek, the guy who's been trying too hard, asks and wraps an arm around your shoulder.
You shift away from him, your eyes pleading towards Jess. "Outside," you mutter coldly while taking a drink from the water bottle.
"Would you, maybe, wanna come to my room?" He whispers into your ear and you shudder uncomfortably, moving away from him completely.
"I'm good. I'm heading to bed," you tell Jess and she smiles softly at you while nodding her head.
You walk up the stairs and head straight into the room you were staying in, which includes a balcony. You run your hands over your face, beginning to think it was a mistake to come in the first place. You quickly change into your pajamas before heading out on the balcony, hearing the ocean waves. This is my happy place though… You think to yourself as you sit down on the cute hammock.
"What a coincidence!" A familiar voice calls out and you snap your head to the left, seeing Ashton leaning against his balcony rails. "Hey."
You let out a laugh and get up from the hammock, heading towards the set of seats. "Hey, what a coincidence indeed," you grin and lean on the cool metal rail.
"You okay?" He asks and you nod your head slowly. Ashton furrows his brows together, watching you run a hand through your hair. "You sure about that?"
You glance back towards him, seeing the concerned look on his face and you let out a sigh. "I'm alright. There's this… guy who tagged along on this vacation with us and he doesn't know when to stop trying to get with me. He's been trying the past day and a half," you pause and turn your head towards the ocean, "that's why I was sitting out there tonight. To get away from him because it just became too much."
Ashton clears his throat and you glance back towards him, a saddened expression on his face. "I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Guys can be… disgusting sometimes," he states and you nod your head in agreement.
"You don't seem disgusting though," you trail off and bite your lip, seeing a slight smile come to the man's lips.
"Yeah, I would say I'm not disgusting but everyone has their own opinion," he chuckles and you giggle as well, resting the palm of your hand against the side of your head.
"Well, you're definitely intriguing Mr. I Surf At Night," you joke, and Ashton laughs a bit harder when the door to your balcony opens up.
You quickly turn to see who came outside and let out a breath of relief to see it was Jess. "I thought I heard talking," she grins and walks towards you, resting her hand on your shoulder. "Who's this?"
"Jess, this is Ashton," you introduce while chuckling, glancing back towards the black-haired man. "Ashton, this is my best friend, Jess."
He gives her a wave and a smile before running a hand through his hair. "Oh! So you're surfer-boy??" Jess asks and brings her eyes to you and a blush covers your cheeks.
"Surfer-boy, huh? Not even a couple of hours and you're already talking about me?" Ashton laughs and you let out a groan, rolling your head back.
"Okay, to be fair, I just didn't mention your name to her," you defend yourself and tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. "And if you'll excuse me, Ash, I'm going to head inside… to save me from embarrassment."
You got up from the seat, grabbing Jess’s wrist and begin to head back into the room. "See you tomorrow!" He calls out and you couldn't help but smile, biting your lip afterward.
"Y'all are adorable," Jess mentions and you roll your eyes at her.
"Jess, we literally just met," you laugh while climbing onto the queen-sized bed. "There hasn't been enough time for us to be adorable yet."
She grins, shrugging her shoulders while leaning against the frame of the door. "People can be adorable from the start. You and Ashton are a prime example. I mean, he's definitely better than Derek," your best friend tells you and you immediately agree with her.
"See, I won't argue with you there."
Jess lets out a chuckle and pushes herself off the doorway. "Alright, well, I'll let you get some sleep," she mumbles and flips the switch to your room off. "Do me a favor and snatch that boy up, okay?"
You let out a loud laugh at her request and shake your head. "I'll try."
-
You, Jess, and two of your other friends are currently sitting in the sand as Calum and Luke decided to try and take on the waves. You squeeze some tanning lotion onto your hand before rubbing it along your legs.
"Need some help with that?" Derek asks and you already know the boy has a smirk on his lips without even having to look at him.
"No, Derek, I'm fine," you bluntly say and resist the urge to roll your eyes. He mumbles incoherently while moving to sit beside one of your other girlfriends. You continue to lather yourself in tanning lotion when the sound of a surfboard flopping into the sand startled you.
You glance up, covering your eyes with your hand to see Ashton standing beside you. A grin appears on both of your lips as he sits down beside you for a moment. "Hey, Y/N," he greets.
"Hey, Ash," you smile while tossing the suntan lotion into the beach bag Jess brought. You eye his surfboard and the wetsuit clinging to his body. "I thought you only surfed at night?"
Ashton chuckles at your joke, running a hand through his hair. "I usually do, but I've been eyeing these waves since I got up a couple of hours ago," he mentions and you let out an elongated oh. The black-haired man points out towards Calum and Luke who were currently sitting on their boards, waiting for the right time to go. "Are those two of your friends?"
"Yeah. Luke is Jess’s boyfriend and Calum's a childhood friend. They've been surfing together for years," you inform him and he nods his head along with your words.
Derek stares you down as you casually talk to Ashton, a scowl on his face. "Who's this guy?" He asks Jess and the red-head turns her head towards the two of you.
"Oh, that's Ashton. She met him last night," she casually tells him before looking back out towards her boyfriend.
Ashton was in the middle of telling you a story of this massive wave he managed to surf without killing himself when a shadow blocks the sun. Both you and Ash glance to your left to see Derek standing there with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Who's this?" He asks you demandingly and you tilt your head at him, wondering how he has the audacity to speak to you like that.
"This is Ashton. Not like it's any of your business," you tell the blonde and he lets out a huff of air. "Ashton this is Derek."
Ashton lets out an, "ah," while giving him a tight-lipped grin. "Well, I'm gonna hit the waves. I'll talk to you later?"
You smile at Ash as he stands up from the sand, grabbing his surfboard. "Yeah, definitely. Don't get hurt out there," you chuckle and he lets out a giggle of his own.
"If I do, will you come to save me?" He questions flirtatiously and you could feel your cheeks heat up.
"Maybe," you answer while digging your fingers into the sand, feeling the butterflies in your stomach again.
Ashton smiles down at you before trekking out further into the ocean. You let out a huge huff of breath, placing your hand over your chest as your heart beats rapidly.
"Really? This guy? I thought we had a thing," Derek goes off and you look at him with a glare in your eyes.
"Excuse me? We never had a thing. If your head wasn't so far up your ass you would see that you make me very uncomfortable," you tell and stand up from your spot.
He scoffs and crosses his arms, rolling his eyes at you. "Whatever. You're a fuckin' prude anyway," Derek spits and you laugh loudly, shaking your head at his immature behavior.
"Mhm, sure. Tell yourself that buddy," you mutter bitterly before walking away from the group, feeling yourself getting furious.
Your eyes were glued to Ash as he surfs a pretty big wave. You practically sit in the water, letting out a large sigh as this trip is getting more and more problematic. You rest the palms of your hands against your cheeks as Luke and Calum exchange a few words with Ashton.
You smile softly as the three seem to get along, leaning your hands back as the sun beats down on you. The cool water of the ocean keeps you at bay as its really fucking hot out today. Your eyes meet Ashton's and he smiles at you while riding the wave in, coming straight towards you.
"It's nice to actually see you surf," you tease him and he rolls his eyes playfully.
"Ha-ha!" Ashton sarcastically laughs and undoes his wetsuit, exposing just his torso. Oh… fuck… He sits down beside you, running his fingers through his damp hair. "Have you ever thought about learning to surf?"
Your eyes widen at his question and immediately shake your head. "Oh, no, no, no," you giggle while waving your hand. "I have no balance and I'm not really fond of the ocean."
"What if I was there the whole time?" He asks and you look over at him, seeing the slight pleading look in his hazel eyes.
You bite your lip and look up at him through your lashes. "If this is a ploy to hang out with me more you can just ask," you smile softly while placing a hand on his. "You don't need to offer a girl who would never ever want to go further than waist-deep into the ocean surfing lessons just to hang out with her."
A blush covers Ashton's cheeks as he nods his head, eyes panning down to the sand between us. "What if it was also an excuse to be really close to you," he whispers and a breath hitches in your throat. "We've known each other for what? Twelve hours or so? Yet, I can't seem to get myself to stay away from you."
You can feel your cheeks heat up and a shiver runs down your spine at his words. "Fuck… Ash, I-" you pause as you are at loss for words. "I feel the same way. I'm so… comfortable around you for someone I just met."
Ashton smiles down at you and a smile graces your lips as well, your eyes locking. His slender fingers brush against yours in the sand when a hard object strikes your back. A gasp leaves your lips as a searing pain lingers on your upper back.
"Fuck," you whimper as Ashton's hand finds itself on your forearm.
"Holy shit. Are you okay?" He asks and moves to sit on his knees, checking on your back.
You shake your head as you can feel the tears pooling in your eyes. The black-haired man gently strokes his fingertips across the middle of your back and you let out a wince.
"The football didn't break your skin open at least," he states and you move some hair from your face. You glance over your shoulder, seeing Derek and some other kid laughing about while looking in your direction.
You pick yourself up off the sand, wiping the excess dirt off as you blink rapidly. "I'm gonna head back," you clear your throat and Ashton looks up at you as he's still on his knees. "I'll talk to you later, Ash."
You quickly grab your stuff and make your way back to the beach house. Ashton watches you with a concerned expression on his face and then glances towards your group of friends.
He gets up from the sand and grabs his board before heading over to them. "Jess?" The black-haired man calls out and they all turn their heads towards him.
"Yeah?" She answers, giving him a friendly smile as Derek glares at him.
"Why the fuck are you even over here?" Derek mentions while taking a step towards Ashton.
Ashton looks down at him, rolling his eyes a bit before returning his attention to Jess. "Can I talk to you for a minute? In private?" He asks and Jess nods her head when Derek intervenes once more.
"Bro, she's dating someone. How about you stop trying to go after girls who are seeing someone," he spits and puts a hand on Ashton's chest, pushing him slightly.
"Bro, last time I checked…" Ash trails off, pushing Derek back as he glares. "Y/N was single and not interested in you. So, why don't you stop putting on a show in front of your friends and back the fuck off."
A couple of the friends stifle a laugh as Ashton gently grabs Jess’s wrist and leads her away from the group. "Yo! That was incredible," she exclaims with a large smile on her face, glancing back at Derek to see him practically fuming.
"Is he always like this? What's his deal?" Ashton asks while scratching his chin. "He threw a football at Y/N and hit her… pretty hard."
Jess’s smile leaves her face immediately at the mention of her friend, a gasp leaving her lips. "What?! Is she okay? Where is she?!" She asks and looks around for you, not knowing you already walked back to the house.
"She's alright. In a bit of pain, but the football didn't break her skin open. Mostly just a bruise, but still. Who the fuck does he think he is to just throw a football at a girl?" Ashton questions with a glare in his eyes.
"He's jealous," the red-head answers and looks up at him. "He's been trying to get with Y/N for years and she's not into him, at all. Apparently Derek can't see that so he keeps on trying. Ever since he saw you two talking earlier, noticing how close you are and how happy she actually looks he's been pissed. That doesn't give him the audacity to fucking hit her though."
Ashton tales a glance towards Derek as he was twirling one of the other girl's hair. "Why do you guys even hang out with him?" He asks Jess and she lets out a sigh, shrugging her shoulders.
"I dunno. He's my boyfriend's friend. Y/N and I only really hang out with him and Calum," she explains and the black-haired man nods his head in understanding. "I'm gonna go check on her. I'll see you later, Ash. I'll let you know how she's doing."
Jess gives him a smile before walking away from him. A huff of breath comes from his nose and grabs his stuff, making his way back to his place.
-
It's been almost four days since you've seen or spoke to Ashton and you'd be lying if you said you didn't miss him. You really adored him. He was nice and obviously cute as hell. The two of you also got along very well.
Your group of friends has been gone for almost two hours to get shit for the party Luke and Calum are throwing tonight. You weren't really feeling up to tagging along so you stayed at the house. You sat on the balcony for a little over an hour, hoping that Ashton would've seen you but nope.
You're searching through your clothes when someone knocks on your door. You lift your head up to see Jess poking her head into the room, giving you a smile.
"Hey," she comes into the room and closes the door behind her. "You know what you're wearing tonight?"
"No fucking idea," you state with a laugh and tucks a strand of hair behind your ear.
Jess hops up onto the desk in your room, swinging her feet. "Did you hear that Ashton's coming tonight?" She asks and your head snaps towards her, your eyes wide.
"W-What?! No! No one told me. I-"
"Yeah, apparently Luke invited him when he went surfing this morning," she mentions with a shrug and you blink a few times, not saying anything.
"Wait, Ashton was surfing this morning?" You ask and Jess lets out a loud laugh.
"Is that really all you heard?" She asks and you shake your head.
You look towards your closet, letting out a sigh before looking through your clothes again. "No, I heard all of it. Doesn't help my nerves but, ya know," you chuckle and pulls out a classic sundress. "How would this look?"
"You would look fucking breathtaking! Ashton would love it," she grins and hops off of the desk and you roll your eyes at her.
"I'm not wearing it to impress him," you lie, swallowing hard and Jess gives you a look. A look that says she can see right through you.
"Mhm, sure. You tell yourself that. Hurry up. Everyone should be here soon."
The party really took off. Apparently Derek invited a bunch of random fucking people when he was out with Chelsea and now there's like fifty people in the beach house you're renting.
You stand in the farthest corner with a red solo cup in your hand, taking the tiniest of drinks. You haven't seen Ashton yet which kinda sucks but you haven't really gone looking for him either.
You decide to head back into the kitchen to refill your cup. You take a quick sip, making sure it's not too strong and you hum in delight. You move to leave the kitchen when Derek runs into you… hard. A scoff leaves your lips as the drink you just made gets all over the dress you're wearing.
"Jesus Christ," he grunts and glares down at you, "watch where you're fucking going."
You click your tongue, pushing him back. "How about you watch where you're going?! God, you're so fucking ignorant," you spit and move to walk by him when he roughly grabs your wrist.
"Watch your tone with me. I may have been nice before but now? Don't test me," he mutters angrily into your ear and you wince as Derek's hand squeezes your wrist harder.
"Let go of me."
He rolls his eyes and practically throws you back. You bump into a few people, apologizing to them while rubbing your wrist. You clear your throat and begin to make your way out the back door. A heavy sigh leaves your lips while looking down at your ruined dress.
"So much for trying to look cute…" you trail off and begin to make your way towards the ocean.
You take a seat, digging your feet into the sand as you watch the ocean waves. You sit there for a few seconds before a voice interrupts your thoughts. "There you are," Ashton's voice calls out and you jump slightly, looking over your shoulder.
A smile appears on your lips and you chuckle softly. "Hey," you greet a bit quieter and Ashton takes a seat beside you.
"What are you doing out here?" He asks and you frown while motioning to the front of your dress. He leans forward, his hazel eyes inspecting the stain on your chest and you couldn't help but blush a bit.
"Derek ran into me and I spilled my drink all over myself," you inform him and Ashton nods his head slowly.
"Derek's an asshole," he states and you scoff, agreeing with him. "If I could I would smack the shit out of him… with my surfboard."
A laugh leaves your lips, resting your hands in the sand as you glance over at the black-haired cutie. "That would be a sight to see," you giggle. Ashton smiles down at you, glad to see a genuine smile on your lips.
He slowly moves his hand closer to yours, his fingers grazing against your wrist before gently grabbing it. You wince slightly and pull your hand away from him. "Sorry," you immediately apologize, looking over at him, "Derek- he grabbed my wrist after I talked back to him and it's still a bit tender."
Ashton's blood boils at the thought of him grabbing you, his eyebrows furrowing together. He reaches forward again, his eyes locking onto yours the entire time as he gently grabs your wrist.
Your heart beats quickly in your chest as Ashton brings your wrist to his face before pressing delicate kisses to it. You swallow the lump in your throat and butterflies soar around in your stomach as you didn't expect him to do such an action.
"A-Ashton," you trail off and his fingers move to intertwine with yours.
"Can I… can I kiss you?" He asks quietly and your breath hitches in your throat. You nod your head slowly and a smile graces Ashton's lips before closing the distance between you two.
Your lips connect with his and your hand immediately reaches out for his shirt, gripping it in your hands. Your stomach churns with excitement and nerves as he moves his lips against yours. The two of you continue to kiss for a good minute before you both get soaked. You let out a gasp and pull away from Ashton, seeing the ocean water retreating back.
"Wow, I was just cock-blocked by water," Ashton jokes and a laugh leaves your lips while you stand up.
"Come on," you motion towards the house while holding a hand out to him. Ashton smiles up at you and takes your hand, getting up from the sand.
Neither of you let go, feeling his fingers lace with yours and you can feel your cheeks heat up. The two of you walk up to the house, hearing the loud music come from the open back door. Ashton squeezes your hand as you both walk into the giant house.
"What in the actual fuck are you doing here?" Derek's voice asks over the music and the two of you glance to the right to see him standing against the wall, two girls hanging onto him. "You're not welcome here."
You try to take a step towards him when Ashton stops you. You look up at the black-haired man, seeing the hard glare in his hazel eyes. "Tell that to your best friend who invited me," he spits and Derek scoffs. "And honestly I can't figure out why Luke is even friends with you. You're a dick who thinks he's hot shit."
The girls hanging onto Derek snicker and the blonde looks down at each of them. "And you think you are? Look who you're with," he motions to me, a disgusted look on his face.
"The same person you tried to sleep with a few days ago, buddy!" You yell, narrowing your eyes at the man. "And now you're being more of an asshole because I wouldn't let you get your dick wet."
"You shut the fuck up. I'm talking to him, not you," Derek sneers and takes a step towards you when Ashton steps in front of you, blocking his way. A scoff-laugh leaves his lips at Ash's actions, crossing his arms over his chest. "Damn, you've got him trained."
Ashton tsks and shakes his head. "Y/N' s doesn't have me trained. I'm just a good human being who doesn't allow assholes to put his hand on a woman… again," he states and your hand finds its way to his back, gripping the shirt he was wearing.
"Ash, c'mon. He's not worth it," you try to pull him away, not wanting anything to get out of hand. He glances over his shoulder to look down at you, his eyes softening.
"Yeah, Ash, step away before you get hurt," Derek mocks and Ashton's jaw clenches and swings his arm back to punch the blonde.
Lots of gasps bounce off the walls, the chatting and music becoming silent as Derek stumbles to the ground. The blonde holds his face as you grab a hold of Ashton's bicep.
Holy fucking shit.
"Come on," you whisper and pull him away from the crowd. The music blasts through the speakers again as the two of you walk up the stairs.
Ashton walks into your room first as you follow closely behind him and close your bedroom door after fully walking inside. "Sorry you had to see that," he sighs and you smile softly at him.
"It's fine. It was kinda hot," you chuckle and shrug as the black-haired man sits on the edge of your bed. You walk over to him and grab a hold of his hand, seeing his angry red knuckles. "Does it hurt?"
He shakes his head and you lift his hand to press a gentle kiss to his knuckles. Ashton's free hand grips your blankets, his hazel eyes burning into yours. "Fuck, you're so beautiful," he whispers and your cheeks heat up.
You smile at the ground, rubbing your thumb on the back of his hand. "God, I'm gonna hate leaving next week," you sigh and Ashton stands up, his chest almost touching yours.
"Then don't…" he trails off before lifting your chin with his index finger to connect his lips with yours.

Camping
Tumblr media
Rating: PG
Summary: Ashton is tired of everyone complaining that they’re bored during long breaks so he decides that a camping trip is necessary. He’s also decided that he’s tired of you and Calum dancing around one another, ignoring your obviously shared feelings, and that this trip is the perfect time to force you to acknowledge them. | College AU ft. tent sharing!
Word Count: 5.8k
“You know, the thing that bothers me the most about Twilight is that they’re in high school. Who the fuck wants to be immortal and spend the rest of eternity in high school? That makes absolutely zero sense.”
Ashton lifted his head, his attention drawn from the textbook he’d been staring at intently for the past hour (although how much of that time was spent actually reading, you couldn’t say), and raised an eyebrow as he watched you stare out the window. You were hidden behind the stacks, tucked away in a quiet part of the library that not even the librarians frequented, and you had the best view of the social quad as well as the quietest spot to work away from the harsh glares of other students when the two of you got a little too into your study break conversations. He could already tell that this was going to be one of those conversations so he closed his textbook and leaned back in his seat as he reached for his water bottle.
“Out of everything that could possibly bother you about Twilight, their decision to return to high school forever is what bothers you the most?” he questioned before he took a sip of his water and shook his head. “I think your priorities are a little off there, but okay.”
“Who would, realistically, want to go back to high school forever? I mean, they really can’t compare the modern high school experience with what they endured. Didn’t Edward die during the fucking plague? Like, I imagine high school was a very different thing then. If you made it to high school, it was probably like being a fucking Ph.D. student now. And, sure, there were probably ancient cliques but nothing as insane as there is now, I’m sure. It just doesn’t add up, Ash,” you huffed as you finally turned your head to face him.
“It was actually the Spanish flu that killed him,” Ashton corrected and when you blinked at him, eyebrows raised and eyes narrowed, he shrugged. “You started this conversation,” he reminded you as he watched you pull out your own water bottle. “Anyway, he was seventeen when he was turned. Guess he just wanted to go back to what he knew.”
“Honestly, textbooks probably didn’t change much in his entire school career,” you huffed, a little too impassioned to be talking about a fictional character but procrastination made you do strange things. “Why not go to college? If you’re a super rich vampire, flunking out doesn’t matter. You can pay tuition or buy a fucking university and just switch leadership every now and again. Or you could just go take classes for the fun of it. Fuck it, that’d be fun. Just learning stuff for the hell of it without having to really try super hard to make good grades. He’s out in the daylight, anyway. I’m sure there’s a super rainy campus somewhere that would’ve loved benefactors like the Cullen family.”
Ashton stared at you, trying desperately to keep from laughing, for a long moment. He bit his tongue to hold back his reply, one that he knew would only set you further off on a tangent, before he shook his head and began gathering his things. You watched, mildly confused, as he shoved his textbook and notebook into his backpack before he stood, slinging it over his shoulder, and rounded the table to do the same to your bag. He held it out for you, eyebrows raised and a look of amusement on his face.
“You’ve clearly been cooped up in here too long,” he offered as an explanation as you took the bag from his outstretched hand, stood, and slung it over your shoulder. “Come on, we’re getting everything ready for the camping trip at mine and Cal’s place.”
“Care to remind me again why we’re all going on a camping trip?” you asked as the two of you made your way down the stairs and toward the sweet freedom of the outdoors. You knew that the temperature had dropped from the mild warmth of the day into a cooler, more tolerable temperature and you couldn’t wait to breathe in something other than the years of desperation and anxiety you’d been inhaling in the library. “None of us are even remotely outdoors-y,” you reminded him as you shoved open the heavy metal door and breathed in deeply.
“Everyone complains about being bored when there are long weekends,” Ashton huffed as he hoisted his backpack up higher and shook his head at you. “I got four texts from you last time asking me to do something with you. This is us doing something!”
“Couldn’t that something have been, like, bowling? Or maybe laser tag? Anything else on the planet aside from camping, really,” you huffed as you followed him down the path leading to the parking lot. As you approached his car, he shot you a look and you rolled your eyes. “Fine, let’s all go to the woods and get hypothermia or eaten by a bear or a mountain lion or get lost in the woods and end up like the kids in Blair Witch. All of those sound like fucking fantastic ways of spending our long weekend.”
Ashton figured that your complaints would drift off once the pair of you reached his apartment and joined the others in preparing for the trip. Calum and Michael had been put in charge of gathering supplies such as tents and sleeping bags while Luke and Sierra had been put in charge of gathering snacks. You’d gathered blankets, a first aid kit, and water (that everyone else forgot) the day before while Ashton was in charge of driving you all to the campsite - who thought that was a good idea was beyond you. But when you got to his apartment and saw the mess of supplies piled in the floor, Calum and Michael playing FIFA, and Luke and Sierra doing homework at the kitchen table, your complaints took on a more pointed tone.
“Still think this is a good idea, Ashton?” you questioned as you dropped your backpack onto the floor beside the couch and stood beside the pile of camping gear.
“Yes,” he nodded, face set in a determined grimace as he reached for the remote and shut off the television. Before Calum and Michael could protest, he gestured to the mess on the floor. “Come on, man,” he whined, glancing at Calum, “you were supposed to have this ready for us to load it into the car so we can leave first thing in the morning!”
“It is ready to load into the car,” Calum defended as he stood and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s gonna be like playing fucking Jenga trying to get us and all this stuff in there,” he predicted as he stared at the tents and sleeping bags. “Whose idea was this, anyway?”
“Ashton’s,” you sighed as you sank to your knees on the carpet and reached for one of the sleeping bags. “Help me refold these. Maybe we can get everything shrunk down a bit to where it’ll all fit. We have three tents, right?” you asked as you began folding the sleeping bag.
“Yep,” Luke confirmed as he followed your instructions and joined you on the floor. “Calum and Ashton in one so neither of them get too jealous,” he teased, a grin on his lips as glanced at them, “Michael and I in another, and you and Sierra in the third.”
“I thought you and Sierra were going to share,” Calum hummed as he sank onto the floor beside you.
He was far too close to you, close enough for you to smell his cologne and the shampoo he’d used in his hair, and it took everything in you not to shy away from him. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Ashton grin and you wanted to throw something at him. Although you were certain that everyone knew about your feelings for Calum, Ashton was the only one that regularly teased you for them. He made sly comments (that really weren’t so sly, not when you really thought about them) and made it a point to seat you next to him whenever possible. You knew that you were going to have to fight Michael so that you weren’t squished into the backseat beside Calum on the two hour drive to the campsite and you could already see the gears turning in Ashton’s head as he tried to think of a way to get you into a tent with Calum.
“That would mean he and I would share a tent and I’m sure he’d much rather share with you,” you answered before Ashton could and he coughed to cover his laugh. Calum glanced over at you and you desperately attempted to avoid his gaze by holding a new sleeping bag up in front of your face, pretending that you were working on folding it. You missed the frown on his lips, missed the look he sent Ashton, and you most certainly missed the look that Luke and Ashton share.
“You know how jealous I get, Cal,” Ashton confirmed with a grin. “‘Sides, we shared a bedroom for a weekend once when we went on a trip freshman year and it was a nightmare.”
“Only because of you, Irwin,” you murmured as you worked on tightening the last sleeping bag, “only because of you.”
It took two hours but between the six of you, you managed to get all of the gear and food packed into the car with barely enough room for all of you to ride. The idea of taking two cars was tossed around but Ashton insisted that everyone could fit into the little SUV so no one argued too strongly. Instead, you all decided to call it a night and get some last minute homework done before you left. Ashton caught Calum staring at you as you left, his gaze clearly trained on you as you climbed the steps to your apartment, and he decided that it was time for the two of you to admit your feelings to one another. With a sly smile, he created a group message with Luke, Michael, and Sierra and began to work out a plan.
The next morning, you were all awake far too early for it to be a day off school and Ashton could practically feel the animosity rolling off of everyone in waves as you all dragged into the parking lot of your apartment complex to stand around his car. He laughed at the various coffee cups among you all and took a sip of his own caffeinated drink before he gestured to the car. “Hop in, everyone. Let’s get this show on the road!”
Before you could so much as blink, Michael is settled into the front seat with the seatbelt wrapped tightly around him and his mug of coffee firmly in hand. You frowned at him but you were too tired to do much more than call him a jackass and slam the door shut. As you had feared, you ended up shoved into the very back beside Calum, the insane amount of stuff packed into the vehicle pushing you close together as you attempted to find a comfortable seat.
“I can feel the tent stakes digging into my back,” he complained as he shifted in his seat to find a position that worked. “And I’m pretty sure I’m sitting on a packet of marshmallows.”
Calum smiled as you giggled at this. He loved your laugh and he loved even more to be the cause of it but despite your closeness with Ashton, you always seemed to clam up whenever he was around. Although the two of them had lived together for nearly a year now and had been friends since freshman year, you had always been a bit stiff around him. Ashton told him time and time again that you were just awkward around people you didn’t know very well but Calum had done everything in his power to get to know you. He tried to talk about FIFA with you (a game that Ashton pointed out your mutual love for), he tried to talk to you about music (he knew that you were both fans of bands like the Arctic Monkeys), and he tried to talk to you about classes or life in general but you tended to shut him down every time. He didn’t think you were really aware that you did it, it didn’t seem to be done out of meanness or spite, but he had a sinking feeling that you didn’t like him very much and the thought made him sad.
Calum had had a bit of a crush on you since Ashton introduced the two of you during freshman year. He’d thought that Ashton was into you for the longest time so he refrained from making a move. However, after learning that Ashton only saw you as a younger sibling, Calum made more of an effort. But sometimes it felt as if it was all for naught as you continued to distance yourself from him. You weren’t like this with Luke or Michael, you were almost as comfortable with them as you were with Ashton, but that comfort didn’t seem to extend to him and he wasn’t sure why. He tried asking Ashton if he’d done something to make you upset or uncomfortable around him but that only got him a laugh and a pat on the back before Ashton walked away, leaving him just as confused as before.
Whatever the issue, he hoped that spending a weekend in the woods with few distractions and not much room for either of you to run away if things got awkward would make friends out of you. He would prefer to be more than friends, of course, but at this point, he decided that he would take what he could get.
As he lost himself in his thoughts, you watched him scroll through his phone with a slight pang of regret washing over you. You’d forgotten to grab your headphones from your bag before you’d shoved it into the trunk and, although you loved Ashton’s taste in music, you’d prefer to be listening to your own playlist instead of The Beatles. Again.
When Calum regained his sense of reality and noticed you slumped in your seat, ears free of headphones and a dejected look on your face, he realized that you must’ve forgotten to grab them and hesitated for a moment before he offered you an earbud. You stared at his hand for a moment before he gave you what he liked to imagine was a charming smile because you took the earbud and shifted just a little closer to make the experience a little more comfortable for you both.
As you shared the same taste in music, his playlist was similar to the one you’d made for the drive. It wasn’t exact, there were a few bands you’d like to introduce him to (should you ever find yourself able to speak to him at length without feeling like you’re going to combust), but at least it wasn’t the same road trip playlist Ashton has had since freshman year (“You don’t change a classic, come on!”).
You didn’t notice it, you were too absorbed in the music and the view passing you by, but you and Calum drifted closer together as the trip went on. Calum wanted to talk to you, especially because this was the closest you’d ever been without running away from him, but you looked so happy watching the world pass you by that he didn’t bother. Instead, he closed his eyes and attempted to catch up on some of the sleep he missed the night before. Upon doing so, he shifted in his sleep and his head ended up on your shoulder. Although you were afraid your heart was going to beat out of your chest and you could feel your palms sweating, you didn’t move for fear of disturbing him. Instead, you remained as still as you could and attempted to forget that the weight on your shoulder was Calum as you impatiently awaited the campsite’s appearance.
You’d hoped that no one noticed Calum’s nap on your shoulder or your shared headphones but the moment you pulled up to the campsite and climbed out of the car (after an awkward smile and quiet apology from Calum), Ashton was pulling you to the trunk and grinning like a fiend as he teased, “You two looked cozy back there.”
“I’m not trying to steal your man, Irwin,” you fired back, a lame attempt at humor to keep him from pressing the matter too far like you knew he’d been prone to do.
Ashton rolled his eyes as he grabbed a tent and pulled it out of the car to hand off to Luke. “You couldn’t steal him, even if you tried,” Ashton played along, a teasing grin shot your way before he shook his head and reached for another tent, “that’s why I’m letting you have him. It wouldn’t be fair to set you up to fail when you’re so clearly in love with him.”
You choked on a sip of your water, coughing and sputtering as Ashton delighted in the look on your face. A hand touched your back, warm and gentle, and you knew without turning that it was Calum. Ashton grinned again, a look of pure mischief in his eyes, before he turned toward Luke and handed him one of the tents as Calum asked, “Are you alright?”
“Fine,” you choked out, coughing just a bit more as you nodded and looked anywhere but at him. You could feel your cheeks heating with embarrassment as he stared at you a little longer, clearly concerned, before he nodded and stepped around you to begin helping unload the gear. As he, Ashton, Michael, and Luke lugged the tents and sleeping bags toward the campsite, you and Sierra grabbed the bags with food and water. When they were far enough away from the two of you, you turned to Sierra and groaned, “Why am I such an idiot? Like, why can’t I just be normal around him?”
“Because you find him incredibly attractive and just a bit intimidating because you’re nervous he won’t like you and things will be awkward,” she answered, practiced and even as though she’d said the same words a hundred times before (mostly because she had, every time you’ve done something mildly embarrassing in front of Calum). When you fixed her with an unimpressed glare, she rolled her eyes. “It’s just Calum,” she reassured you as she hoisted the bag higher up on her shoulder and began the walk to the campsite with you hurrying to catch up. “He’s hot, yeah, but he’s an idiot. He’s a total nerd and shouldn’t be intimidating at all but he’s hot and quiet so he has that whole mysterious thing going on, I guess.”
“Reasonably, I know that,” you groaned as you picked at a loose string on the tote you’d placed some of the food in, “but, like. I don’t know. He’s perfect, Sierra! He’s pretty, yeah, but we have so much in common and he’s smart and talented and sweet and so overwhelming! I see him and I just get overwhelmed.”
Sierra blinked, surprised by your outburst, before she hummed, “That sounds like a personal problem.” When you scoffed and slapped her arm, she giggled and shook her head. “I’m kidding! I get it,” she nodded, “you’re overwhelmed. You’re concerned that the fantasy won’t match the reality or that you’ll make things weird or something else totally unlikely to happen. But you’ve got to give it a chance. You’ll never know if you don’t try. And, besides, if things don’t work out then you can always keep avoiding him. Not much will change.”
“I don’t know if I love you or hate you right now,” you mumbled as the two of you continued up the trail to the campsite.
Ahead of you, Ashton was rolling his eyes at Calum’s rambling about how embarrassed he was that he fell asleep on your shoulder. “I mean, she hates me,” he groaned as he shifted his grip on the tent. “It’s clear that she hates me and I fell asleep on her and I think I drooled on her shoulder. So, she’s clearly never going to speak to me ever again.”
“Like she talks to you so much now?” Michael teased, a grin on his face that Calum couldn’t see.
“Oh, leave him alone,” Luke chided playfully as he bit back his laughter at Calum’s whine, “he’s just going to pine until we graduate and then in twenty years, after they’re both married with kids, reminisce about her as being the one that got away.”
“I hate all of you,” Calum deadpanned as he dropped the tent onto the ground. “The whole lot of you, fucking awful.”
“We love you, too, mate,” Ashton cheered. The three of them fell silent for a moment, glancing around the open space, before the snapping of twigs and crunching of leaves brought their attention to you and Sierra. The two of you entered the small clearing, Sierra still grinning and you looking just as annoyed as Calum, and promptly placed the bags onto the small picnic table near the edge.
“We should get some firewood,” Ashton proposed as the six of you stood around the clearing without a clear direction of what to do next. You could see the mischief in his eyes once again, a sign that you weren’t going to like the words that came out of his mouth next, and you could tell what he was going to say before he asked you and Calum to go gather the wood. “The rest of us will get the tents set up,” he promised and before you could open your mouth to question why it couldn’t be you and Sierra or even you and him, Ashton turned away from you and began to busy himself with a tent as the others followed his lead.
You watched for a moment as Luke, Michael, Sierra, and Ashton scattered around, staring intently at sleeping bags or tents in an effort not to look at you or Calum. You could see Ashton’s shoulders shaking with silent laughter, you could see Sierra glance at you out of the corner of her eye, and you could see Michael nudge Luke and you knew that Calum saw it, too. The two of you stood there for a moment, staring at your idiot friends, before you sighed and turned to face him. “They’re not going to drop the charade,” you sighed, your voice far quieter than you intended, “let’s go find some wood.”
You swore you could hear Ashton mumble, “I’m sure Calum knows where to find some wood for you,” and you paused to grab a roll of paper towels and tossed them at his head before you followed Calum into the woods.
The two of you were silent as you gathered wood that looked suitable for a fire. It was somewhat awkward and you were frustrated at the task you’d been given. You’d never been camping so you were really not sure what you were looking for and you made Calum aware of that as you stared at a pile of dry branches. “I honestly have no idea what we’re supposed to be gathering. What burns best? What doesn’t burn at all? Why can’t I just shove all of Ashton’s belongings into a pile and use that as a base for a fire?”
Calum laughed at your obvious frustration with your mutual best friend and pointed to a few branches off to the side. “I think those will work,” he shrugged as he waited for you to gather them and place them on the growing pile in his arms. “We can send the others out later to get more if our selection isn’t what they wanted.”
“I’m honestly just hoping they’ll all realize how terrible an idea it is to spend three days in the wilderness when we could be bored and annoyed with our circumstances in an area with cell phone reception,” you sighed as you reached for yet another branch before frowning at the dampness of it. “Gross.”
Calum watched you hesitate for a moment before you wiped your hands on your jeans with a frown. He could tell that the outdoors really weren’t your thing, or maybe they were and you were just annoyed with the circumstances, but he was determined to capitalize on the time you were being forced to spend together. So, he asked, “What were you going to do with the weekend? Before Ashton roped you into coming along, of course.”
“Sleep,” you answered nearly immediately and he nodded as if it was the most sensible answer you could give. “I’ve got papers and projects coming up and I know I’m going to be chugging coffee and pretending that I’ll catch up on the sleep I’ve missed at some point so I figured I would get a head start. Maybe watch a movie or rewatch Teen Wolf for the millionth time, too,” you shrugged before you sighed, “but, alas, I am in the middle of nowhere without wifi or even enough service to text my mom and tell her that she’d be proud of me for touching something that got my hands dirty.”
That was the most you’d ever said to Calum in a single conversation and he was mildly surprised that you’d said so much (you were surprised yourself, though you imagined it was only because you weren’t looking at him that you’d been able to speak so much). But regardless of his surprise, he didn’t question it. Instead, he nodded and said, “I was just gonna play FIFA.”
You glanced up at him, curious to see the look on his face, and when you caught sight of his smile and the amused look in his eyes, you rolled yours and smiled. After that, the pair of you continued to work in silence. This time, the silence was less awkward and more contemplative. You were trying your hardest to remember that Calum was, indeed, just Calum. No matter how attractive you found him or how perfect you’d come to think he was, he was just a guy who was likely going to be in your life until you graduated (at the very least). The least you could do was try to act like a fully functioning human around him.
Calum, on the other hand, was trying his hardest to figure out how to keep the momentum going. Although it wasn’t much, a little progress was better than none at all. However, he didn’t want to force it. He was glad that you talked to him on your own without prodding so he left it and allowed the two of you to continue searching for firewood in a somewhat comfortable silence.
And everything was fine, better than fine, really. Until the two of you returned to camp to find all of the tents set up and inhabited except the last one. Outside the green tent Calum chose just for you, you see your backpack sitting beside Calum’s. You blinked at the items for a moment before you stomped across the clearing to the tent that you can hear Michael and Ashton giggling in.
“What,” you snapped as you shoved the side of their tent, “and I can’t stress this enough, the actual fuck?”
“Michael wanted to share with me!” Ashton shouted just as Michael answers, “Ashton made me do it but we’re not switching, I’m comfortable!”
“You both suck and you will wake up in the lake tomorrow, I hope you’re aware of that,” you huffed before you shoved the tent once more and returned to the tent you were now going to be sharing with Calum. He met your gaze and it took every ounce of self-restraint you had not to turn your head or look away as he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “I’ll make Ashton trade with me,” he told you as he reached for his backpack. “They’re just being dumb.”
You hesitated, unsure of whether this was a dumb idea or not, but Calum looked so dejected and sheepish that you didn’t want to hurt his feelings further. So, you shook your head. “It’s fine,” you sighed as you grabbed your own backpack and unzipped the tent. “They are being dumb but it’s just a few nights,” you shrugged, attempting to keep your cool as you brushed past him to get into the tent. “Anyway, I could use your help to drag them into the lake tonight.”
As the six of you settled into your tents, you could hear Ashton and Michael laughing at some joke or scheme and Luke and Sierra chatting about the concert they planned to go to after finals. You and Calum were quiet, awkwardly moving around one another and attempting to keep some space between you even though it was proving to be incredibly difficult. As Calum moved to unfold his sleeping back, balancing on his knees and leaning over to get it stretched out, he managed to lose his balance and fell straight into you. The pair of you collapsed onto the ground in a heap, legs awkwardly bent and arms locked between one another as you stilled in surprise. You were both frozen for a moment, unsure of what just happened, and the situation was only made worse by Ashton unzipping the tent flap and yelling, “Finally!” upon seeing your position.
You and Calum quickly scrambled to put some distance between one another but the excitement spread among your friends and you were forced to listen to Ashton ramble about how in love with Calum you were as Michael retorted that Calum wasn’t any better. You didn’t dare to look at him but you could feel the warmth in your cheeks and you were half hoping the ground would open up and swallow you whole.
However, as soon as Sierra dragged the others away to give you both a minute, Calum was quick to apologize. After he apologized for bowling you over, he paused before he added, “I’m sorry about them, too. Idiots, the lot of them.”
“Yeah,” you nodded as you glanced out the open flap toward the campsite. “Idiots.” You were both silent for a moment before you decided to give Sierra’s suggestion a shot. Ashton had already yelled it for the world to hear and if things didn’t work out, you knew that one of them would readily switch tents with you. So after a beat of silence, you mumbled, “He’s not wrong, though.”
Calum blinked, a bit confused, before he realized what you meant. He could feel his heart rate skyrocket and his palms begin to sweat as he shifted a little closer to you. He wanted to believe that you meant you were just as into him as he was into you but he didn’t want to assume something that wasn’t true. So he asked, “About what?”
Part of you had hoped that he would just accept that as your confession and move along but you’d never been that lucky. So, instead of delaying the inevitable, you replied, “That I’m into you. That’s why I’m weird around you. Sorry.”
Calum was elated to hear your confession and didn’t hesitate in shifting a little closer to you. “You’re into me?” he questioned and when you nodded, still not looking at him, he grinned. “I’m into you, too,” he assured you quietly. “I have been since Ashton introduced us. I thought you didn’t like me.”
“I like you a lot,” you rushed, your words tumbling quickly out of your mouth. “You’re just fucking intimidating. You’re hot, yeah, but you’re smart and talented and passionate and loyal and a good person and-“ Calum cut you off in the middle of your rambling with a soft press of his lips to yours. The kiss didn’t last long, barely long enough to stop your anxious flow of words, and you wanted to be angry that he cut you off mid-sentence, however, you couldn’t find it within yourself.
Calum looked sheepish as he pulled away, his cheeks pink and his smile timid. “Sorry,” he laughed as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously, “I couldn’t help myself. I’ve wanted to do that for a really long time.”
“I’m glad you did,” you nodded, a smile on your lips as you bring a hand up to your mouth. Calum grinned at the gesture and leaned in once more to press a soft kiss to the back of your hand before he moved it and placed another chaste kiss to your lips.
The two of you sat there for a moment, lips barely inches apart and eyes closed, before the banging of a hand against your tent sent you jumping backward.
“Sorry to interrupt, lovebirds,” Ashton grinned and you could tell that he wasn’t sorry at all as he leaned his head into the open tent flap, “but we’re about to make food. Come on!”
“When are we going to push them out into the lake?” Calum asked as he made his way out of the tent and reached out for your hand to help you up.
When he didn’t let go, only grinned at you and gently squeezed your hand, you matched his grin and shook your head. “I’m down for now, honestly. The sooner we get them in the lake, the sooner they leave us alone.”
“Hey, if we’d have left you alone, you’d both be alone,” Ashton pointed out as he tossed you a bag of hot dog buns. “You’re welcome.”
Though you didn’t really want to admit it, Ashton was right. If he’d left well enough alone, both you and Calum would still be attempting to keep your distance without knowing how the other felt. Though things weren’t completely settled yet, you knew that you at least had a future that didn’t involve avoiding one another and attempting to keep your growing feelings under wrap.
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll thank Ashton for that one day.

Author’s Note: I don’t think I ever posted this anywhere. Even if I did, it was originally for Ben and I just switched it to Calum. Anyway. That’s it for the fics that I have finished and have just edited. Maybe I should’ve spaced them out but it’s not like anyone reads them anyway. So, I guess it doesn’t matter. Okie. Well. I really want to work on my 80s fic but, like. Motivation is seriously hard to find. And a Buffy fic but I feel like no one will read either of them so, like, what’s the point you know? I know that’s dumb but. I don’t know. Anyway. I’m gonna go watch more Buffy so that I get out of my head. I’ve never gotten past season 4 so maybe I will this time.

so I’ve been debating posting something since this morning, so here we are 😌
I’m so endlessly grateful that I found Luke on YouTube almost 10 years ago. Watching him go from a solo artist, to a three piece band, and then to a four piece band has been an absolute privilege. He’s grown into his role as a frontman and he owns it.
Seeing Michael grow into a kickass lead guitarist and become honestly the softest man on the planet has me 🥺 (Michael was my lane for some of the early days of the band so he has a green hair-dye coloured piece of my heart 💚)
Cal is my forever cheat lane and I love him for that honestly. He gave up a career in football for his boys, and I hope he still feels like it was the right decision bc the band wouldn’t be the band without Calum 🥺 he plays bass and keys, and sings, and honestly what more could I want 😌
Then we have Ash. My main man. Drummer, singer, solo artist - a man of many vibes. I’ve talked a lot about what he in particular has done for me before, so I won’t go into it again, but just know I’m still endlessly in love with that clown. Even if he’s been making me emo af lately smh
Today is 9 years of 5sos, but it’s also 9 years of me finding the band that I call home. They’ve been there through every facet of my life; every single up, and every single down. I’ve watched them grow up and I’ve grown up alongside them, and while the difference in our lives sometimes makes me wonder where the fuck I went wrong (😌), I wouldn’t change it for anything. They’re my boys and I’m so honoured to exist alongside them. 🥺
today also feels special because through these boys I’ve met some of the most wonderful people and gained the best friends I’ve ever had in my life. (some quick shoutouts under the cut bc it’s emo hours lads✌🏼) This fandom isn’t always the nicest place to be, but I like to think that our little community over here is pretty good.
Happy 9 years boys, I can’t wait for the big 1-0 💙
@loveroflrh - Lauren, I’m so blessed to know you. You’re such a sweetheart and I’m SO SAD that we didn’t get to meet for my birthday, but i have faith that it will happen 🙏🏼 getting to know you recently has been a blessing, and witnessing you and Beth progressively losing it over the plot of Brave is one of my highlights of 2020, so thank you 😂 you’re a wonderful writer, and a wonderful friend, and I love youuu 💙
@kindahoping4forever - Crys, you’re a gem. I feel like we really bonded over firefight (still not over it), and since then the clownery has got progressively worse. Your fics are devastating and I hope one day dream!Crystal finally gets her moment. Your skills of manifestation are simply unmatched and quite honestly a little scary. I’m desperate to get my butt over to you when it’s safe to, disney is calling our names. love you 💙
@feliznavidaddycal - Raaachhhh. I feel like we’ve spoken a lot more since 🤡 club was born and you’re so wonderful. I hope you know that whenever there’s a notif from you in the gc I brace myself because it’s usually something devastating. I’m sad we didn’t get to DC this year, but you are on my list of people to come and give love to 🥺 Love you 💙
@irwinkitten - teej, I love you so much 💙 getting to FINALLY squish you in July was wonderful and I’m so endlessly proud of everything you ever do. You were one of the very first people I ever followed when I made this account way back in the day, and to be able to call you my friend is honestly a little whack, but you’re a wonderful human and I can’t wait to be able to squish you again soon 🥺
@pxrxmoore - Beth (you really thought I’d write all that and forget about you?), you already know how I feel about you and our friendship. I’m so grateful I inboxed you about Luke being chained to the ceiling in the easier video 😌 befriending you is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I can’t wait until we can do all the things we have planned. we’ve done so many things since we first met irl last November - we’ve got so many more tattoos, and been to waga’s probably more times than is sensible, we’ve made some questionable decisions and both almost had a panic attack outside a shop in Birmingham (😌✌🏼) but our chaos is unmatched. screaming about Ashton with you is always a pleasure. thank u for helping turn my emoji heart from black to blue. love u beech 💙
quick mentions also to: @malumsmermaid (Lauren, we are also desperate to come and see you as soon as we can 🥺), @karajaynetoday, @ashtonsunshine, @calpops, @ashtonlftv - I speak to all of you in varying degrees, but I always love seeing you on my dash, and you make this fandom brighter just by being in it 💙
I’ve probably forgotten someone and for that I can only apologise, but if you’ve ever interacted with me in anyway, then just know that I love you and I’m grateful for you 💙

In A Storm
Bree gets stranded in a storm and just needs to find someone to give her a helping hand.
Calum x Black!OC, Bree. Idk what happened. This post doesn’t actually exist.
CW: 18+ Content (Briefest mentions of sex. It’s an almost fade to black moment, but there’s a tiny teeny amount of details.)

Bree wants to laugh. The light on her car came on twenty minutes ago. She thought then, maybe she should pull over, call her dad and see what she should do. She was so close to her friend, Drew’s house. And maybe it was stupid to negioate with herself that if it went out in another ten minutes she’d continue on and worry about it in the morning. Her lower back and ass was starting to hurt from the long drive though and if Bree was to stop she only wanted it to be at her final destination so she could stretch out and sleep.
Though in Bree’s defense, the light shouldn’t have gone out. If something was really wrong, then it would’ve stayed on. But it went out after a couple minutes. She was nearing her exit when it came back on. It was only another ten minutes according to the GPS. Just another ten minutes and then in the morning, she could get someone to look at the car. Now, not even two minutes from the new house, a whopping three blocks away, her car was slowly puttering to its end.
And breaking down two minutes from her new place wouldn’t be that bad. Things happened. But it was of course during her big move from her parents' place and in with Drew up in the Hills. This move is only temporary. She had a job starting in a week and after stacking up a few checks, Bree was going to put in an application to an apartment complex not too far from her job. But, of course, her car would break down in the middle of a downpour.
The rain was nice at first. Made her feel like she was in her own bubble down the winding roads of the highway. Though she was getting into heavier traffic closer to the city and folks were becoming a bit more impatient in their driving, the rain provided her a little bit of solace. It felt a renewal. Bree was flying the coupe and it felt right that even though it was exciting it was also a little sad. It felt right to have the rain hitting the roof of her car. It made her feel like she was shedding something--though she wasn’t sure what it was just yet.
But she did not need the rain and her car breaking down. Bree flicks on her emergency lights. Fat would have this for her. Fate would have this stored away just for her, at just the most inopportune time. Pulling the car off to the side of the road, Bree listens to the rain falling around her. She exhales, thinking what her next step should be. She’d have to call for a tow. And she’d have to let Drew know that she’d be delayed getting in and she should probably call her dad just to make sure she was handling the situation right.
Reaching for her phone, she taps to end the GPS’s route. She wouldn’t be needing that for a while. Her nails click over the glass screen and just as her fingers hover over her dad’s contact the screen goes back. Her phone started dying just as she got into the neighborhood and now without the car battery on, she was left with no charge. “Let this be a fucking lesson to charge your phone the night before your drive,” Bree tells herself.
Her portable charger box was somewhere in the mass of bags and boxes in her car. She told herself she’d put in her purse before leaving but due to late night last minute packing, Bree’s sure she dumped it somewhere into the depths of those boxes and there was no way she’d be able to unearth it now.
“At least you’re in a neighborhood,” she tells herself, looking for any signs of life behind curtains. “A light, a child, something,” she mutters, looking through the sheets of rain.
And right at the end of the block, a house down from where her car gave up the ghost, Bree spots two dogs in the windows. One fluffy and the other one with a pretty white coat. Normally, Bree wouldn’t be so inclined to just walk up to any old house. But a house with two dogs made her feel better. It felt like a sign. Throwing her phone into her purse, she took a deep breath.
She had just pressed her hair. And sure really it was not anything more than a blow out and a quick rod set, but still it meant that the second the rain touched her scalp her roots would revert, the curls would take back their natural form. Though, that would just have to be a fight for tomorrow. Right now she can’t be sitting in her broke down car with no phone or way to contact anymore.
“Do or die,” she sighs. Sliding the keys from the ignition, Bree leans into the door. “I just did my hair though. God,” she huffs, opening her door. The rain is cool. It’s almost a relief. The door is wet within seconds. Her jeans are no longer the light faded wash but dark denim blue.
It’s another moment before she fully pushes herself out of the car, locks it and then runs up the driveway, purse clutched tight to her side. The rain’s not a chill to her bones. But it’s like a refreshing sip of water. The jog’s stretched out her lower back a little. Under the refugee of this strangers porch, she shakes a little bit of the water from her hair and raps at the door. “Please don’t be a creep,” Bree whispers, biting the corner of her lip. “Also, not an axe murder. Would not be cool.”
______________________________________
Calum walks past the two dogs perched on his couch to the front door. Calum agreed to dog sit Moose for the day while Michael took South to the vet. The poor guy hadn’t quite been eating like before and Michael, the worrier that he is, decided not to wait to check him out. Crystal had gone out of town and rather than letting Michael have to fret over South and Moose, Calum happily offered to watch Moose while Michael took care of what he needed.
Calum’s not really sure what he expected to find on the other side of the door. It could’ve been anyone really--Michael, a mailperson, possibly a random kid asking if they could get access to his backyard to retrieve a rogue ball. But not someone, completely drenched, nervously running her teeth over her bottom lip. “Sorry to bother you. I just need to use your phone. My car broke down. I’m a genius who doesn’t charge her phone before driving 5 hours across the state.”
Calum looks past her, over her shoulder to see a car--he assumes it’s her--pulled over to the side of the road. He looks back to her. The college sweatshirt hanging heavily from her frame thanks to the pouring rain. Her hair sticks to her face a little. Whatever eye makeup she was wearing has started to run down her cheeks. “C’mon in,” he waves hurriedly for her to enter.
“Thanks,” she smiles, stepping inside but not going past the indoor welcome mat. Her shoes squish as she walks onto the hardwood floor.
“Is your car far?”
“Nah, just like a house down. I saw the dogs in the windows. Seemed like a safe bet.” She holds out a hand to the dog intrigued by her. The pure white pup happily sniffs away at her hand while the smaller husky colored dog watches from afar.
Calum turns any shoes suitable to go out into the rain. “I can help you push it closer to my house, that way none of my neighbors get pissy. That’s if you’re okay with getting wet again?”
The woman laughs. “I think I’m passed getting worried about wet. You’re the one that’s bone dry.”
“Not worried about it really. I’m just sick of my neighbors, at this point.”
“Don’t want the HOA on your ass?” she teases.
“God, not again.” Into some old tattered boots, Calum faces her. “I’m Calum by the way.”
“Bree,” she turns, slipping her purse over her head. “Is it okay if I set this inside? The phone’s dead but I don’t want it getting wet or anything.”
“Yeah sure,” he waves to the coffee table.
Both of them pause on the front porch. Bree’s already wet like she said, but now her hair’s truly fucked. There’s no denying that. “Really, I could foot the heat of your neighbors,” Bree offers, not really wanting to go back into the rain.
Calum chuckles beside her. “Let’s say me and the HOA are on thinner ice than before.”
“Thanks. Even though I’m getting you wet. Just want to say that now before we’re both drowning in this downpour.”
“No problem.”
The second her sopping wet shoes hit the first stair, Bree definitely notes the air is cooler now. And it could be because she was already wet once before. And somehow had managed to adapt in the two minutes she was inside Calum’s place to the warmth. Now in the rain again, the chill is definitely hitting her bones. She runs again to her car. Her keys are clicking between her fingers.
Her grip slips around her keyes and she curses before picking them up. Calum’s already positioned at the trunk, waiting on her. It’s a bit of embarrassment that heats her cheeks, sitting inside her car. She hadn’t meant to make anyone else do so much extra work or have anyone else subject themselves to the rain. With fingers gripping tight to the steering wheel, she leans out of the window just a little to let Calum know she’s ready.
Thankfully, she hadn’t coasted super far out from Calum’s driveway. Bree keeps an eye on the nose of her car. It’s slow of course with only one person behind to push. When they get just pass the mailbox, Bree gives a shout and puts the car into park. She throws her head into the steering wheel, exhaling.
Behind her closed lids, all she seems to see is the cut of Calum’s jaw. Why did he have to be hot? Why wouldn’t he have been just some decent guy with two dogs? But he had to be hot and willingly to subject himself to the rain for her. She still has to call a tow truck and Drew, and her dad. There’s not much time for wallowing in the misery life liked to hand her.
Throwing up her door, she finds Calum right at the driver side passenger door. “I can throw your clothes into the wash while you use my phone. Sound okay?”
The rain is clinging to the lines of his face, washing down his cheek and riding the line of his jaw. Bree tries to focus instead of his eyes. But even the rain there, on his lashes, is so goddamn beautiful. “Thanks again, Calum.”
“Don’t worry.” They walk back up his driveway. Calum lets her go ahead of him to get inside. But he leads her down to the bathroom, where Bree stands, still dripping water onto his floor.
The press that she worked so hard is gone. The roots have coiled around each other. The ends are curling and she knows soon, they’ll follow suit. It’s in the mirror that she sees the mascara’s run down her face. She can’t believe she has to look like this, showing up at a strangers door and that stranger being so attractive too.
“I’m literally a drowned rat,” Bree exhales.
“But a cute drowned rat,” Calum returns. In his hands, he holds a towel, washcloth, and a stack of dry clothes out to her. “Pardon that I lack any kind of underwear other than boxers, but I hope they suffice until your clothes are dry.”
Bree nods, heart thundering in her chest. Did he just call her cute? There’s no way her ears heard that. “Thanks. You’re like totally saving my ass right now. But also, like, I do have some clothes in my car. Just means going back outside.”
“Neither one of us is facing that hell storm again. You’ve braved it twice, Bree. By the way, the hot water’s a little fussy. I got it fixed recently but you still gotta talk sweet to  it.”
“Noted, charm the hot water.”
Calum points out where to find other essentials in the bathroom and then backs out of the room with a tiny wave, lips lifting into a tiny smile. It feels nice under the warm run of the shower head. Bree definitely needed a little bit of patience with the hot water but once the temperature evened out it became well worth it.  Just her luck to work out like this. But she’s immensely grateful Calum’s so understanding. If not, she’d most likely wind up stranded, or she’d be tied up in someone’s basement.
It’s not a thought Bree likes lingering on. But it’s just a reality for her. She hadn’t necessarily helped herself. When the light first came on, she could’ve found a car shop nearby. She could’ve waited there for a few hours, got it fixed and saved herself this trouble. Bree won’t be making anymore negotiations when it comes to her car anymore. That’s a lesson that really only needs to be learned once and she’s received the message loud and clear.
Outside the shower, she takes in the gray t-shirt with splotches of white on the lower torso and sweatpants offered up to her. It feels all too intimate, to be wearing someone else’s clothes. Bree doesn’t know anything besides his name. And well, he has dogs. And he’s cute. And he has a fucking nice house. Though she hasn’t seen a lot of it, Bree already feels how cozy it is. It’s lived in, with decent space. It’s full. Calum’s house feels full even if it’s just him in the house with two dogs.
Bree likes that feeling, walking into a house and feeling how bright and warm it is. It told her more about Calum, that he had this very embracing and calm energy about it. But that didn’t fully negate the fact that he was a stranger. And she was a stranger to him and she was still standing in a towel. Slipping into the clothes presented, she gathers her clothes into the towel, hopefully to keep from making an even bigger mess of her evening.
Outside the door of the bathroom, Bree’s immediately greeted by one of the dogs. She’d guess they’re a toy poodle, but she can’t tell for certain. “Hi,” Bree coos, bending down to scratch behind one of their ears. “What’s your name?” The pink collar and tag tap just a little in the excited pants. “Oh, you look ear scratches huh, girl?”
“That’s Moose. Old man’s Duke. He’s not a big of people. So I apologize in advance.” Calum’s comes from further in the house. His t-shirt and shorts now changed into sweatpants and a ribbed tank.
“So Moose and Duke, your partners in crimes?”
“Moose isn’t mine, as sad as I am to admit it. She’s a friend and I’m just dog sitting for a little bit. Duke’s my precious old man.”
Bree’s heart shouldn’t clench like it does. Precious old man, why not just stick a knife into her chest. There’s no way to tell how long Calum’s had Duke but it’s abundantly clear that Calum adores Duke.  “We can say Moose is your partner in crime too. Even if it’s just for a day.”
Calum chuckles. “Yeah. And as you can see, she’s not afraid to get what she wants.”
Bree nods, turning her attention back to Moose for just a moment and pressing a soft kiss to the top of the dog’s head.
“I can take those, by the way.”
Calum’s hand is outstretched, ready to take the damp clothes from her. Bree shouldn’t be staring at the veins in his hands and forearm. Nor should she be wondering what the back of his knuckles feel like against her cheek. But Bree could absolutely wonder how to prove to Calum’s old man that she was trustworthy--and that is a much safer thought.
Bree hands over the makeshift sack. “Thanks, again.”
It’s a curt nod. The smile seems genuine though. “I’ll get this into the wash.”
Bree stays where she is for the moment, both hands scratching at Moose’s chin. It’s safer to say here. It’s safer to just give into Moose and give her all the affection because if Bree stands, she’s going to do something reckless, like peek through a room or try to find the laundry room just to steal another glance at Calum.
His departure doesn’t last long enough. Calum comes padding back down the hallway, the soft recessed light reflecting off his skin. The hum and rumble of the washer is clear as it echoes throughout the house. “If you’re calling for a tow,” Calum starts, holding out his phone. It’s unlocked and on the keypad. “You’re risking the rain again.”
Bree groans sliding to her butt and resting against the wall. “You’re right. I’m just moving in with a friend for this new job and I didn’t anticipate my car breaking down during my drive.”
Calum leans into the wall opposite from her. “How far away is it?”
“Literally it’s like two blocks from here. A light came on and I didn’t pay attention to it and I’m just a fucking idiot.”
“Hey, no, it’s alright. Shit happens all the time.” Calum sides down the wall, squatting. “You can spend the night here. I know it’s only two blocks, but the weather’s a fucking mess. I can help you move and you can get your car towed to a shop. It all works out.”
Bree wants to tell him to shut the fuck up. She wants him to take back everything he just said. There’s no way she can survive a night in this man’s home. “I don’t want to impose. Maybe the rain will let up.”
Calum shakes his head. “Really, just spend the night. We can transfer whatever you need into my truck in the morning and once the truck gets your car I can take you to your friend’s house.” Calum smiles softly when he spies Moose curling up into Bree’s lap. “Besides, Moose likes you. I think she’d be sad to see you go.”
“But your old man Duke, I might have to put some work in with him.”
“He’s gotten better. Just talk sweet to him.”
Their laughter is soft. Bree rests her head into the wall. She still has his phone and she’s reminded that she ought to call Drew. “You’re right. I don’t want to go back out into that rain.”
He motions with two fingers and Bree hands back the phone. The unlock is quick. “Make your calls. I got tea, coffee. I think there’s hot chocolate if you want that. If you haven’t eaten, we can figure that out too.”
“You do realize that I’m like practically a stranger. I showed up at your door like a fucking drowned rat. You didn’t even tell me my mascara had run.”
He knows all that. Calum doesn’t need to be told that. And sure it probably sounds dumb and definitely a little stupid. But there was something about Bree that makes him worry less. It helps that she hasn’t flipped, hasn’t given out any indication that she knows who he is. And maybe it’s not safe to assume that she doesn’t know. But he has a strong feeling that if she did, they wouldn’t be having such an easy conversation. His gut would tell him if something was suspicious.
“You looked pretty stressed out. I didn’t think you needed to know that your mascara was giving you raccoon eyes.”
With the phone to her ear, Bree glares at Calum. It’s playful and he laughs in returns, before pushing up off the wall. Moose sits with Bree but watches as Calum carries himself into the kitchen. He ought to be ashamed. He ought to feel more guilty at the way he wonders what she looks like beneath his clothes. And it doesn’t help, not at all, that she looks cuter, in his clothes than he ever did.
It’s comforting to know now at least Bree seemed to be less tress. When she first stood in front of him on his porch, her brown eyes were blown, shifting her weight. She looked somewhere between frustrated and almost amused. Like she had expected something like this to happen to her. Though, there was still an air of apprehension and worry.
“I’m safe,” Bree says. Her voice carries throughout the house. “Just some car trouble. I’ll get it seen in the morning. Yeah, yeah, I’m okay.”
The conversation soon ends but it’s only another minute before her voice picks up again. “Hey, Dad. Yeah, it’s me, Bree. Had to borrow another phone for like two seconds. Anyways, car went flatline on me. But I’m okay and safe for the night. Gonna get it checked out in the morning.”
There’s a pause. Calum pours a glass of water, figuring that’s the safest bet until Bree gets off the phone. “Yeah, Dad. Really I’m safe. In a..hotel...No the car’s not just out on some highway. Just--” Whatever Bree was about to say clearly doesn’t outrank her father’s statement. “I don’t have an estimate yet. Hopefully it’s not too much. I don’t know. I’ll worry about that tomorrow….Thanks. Love you too.”
Bree’s glad the house isn’t a maze. It makes finding Calum a lot easier. But as she settles onto the barstool, sliding his phone back to him, she does wish she had more time to mentally prepare for Calum’s gaze. His eyes are warm, and inviting. That’s not a thing she needs to be worried about right now. Right now, she’s got to worry about her car and moving, and paying to fix her car.
“Have you eaten yet?” Calum turns to the fridge, listing off the options he has, even offers ordering something for her if none of his options sound appealing. “Tea, coffee, hot chocolate. Which I’m like ninety percent sure I already offered, sorry.” It’s paired with a soft chuckle.
Bree did eat. She made sure to text her dad when she stopped and when she got back onto the road. But maybe it’s just the adrenaline, the stress of her car, and maybe it’s partially something to do so she doesn’t say something stupid, or completely left field. “Hot chocolate would be nice.”
Just as Calum sets the mug down, a buzzer sounds. Both dogs bark for a moment before quieting down. “I put a blanket in the dryer. Just in case you were cold,” Calum explains. “Did you want it or is that overkill?”
“You--you didn’t have to. But I appreciate it.”
“Yeah, no, of course.” He knows he’s staring. Her smile is bright and shows off all her teeth too. Like she’s not afraid of anything, or maybe she’s learned to put on a smile even when she’s terrified. His gaze lingers a little too long on her lips. The way she works her teeth over the skin, but they’re still full. Calum wonders if they’re soft too. “So,” he starts, spinning to face his cupboards, “you said you were moving? Just a couple blocks down?”
Bree nods, eyes trailing down his shoulders and back that flex as he grabs onto the blue box. “Yeah-yeah. Got a new job and a friend of mine agreed to let me crash with them until I got an apartment. Wanted to save up some more money before throwing myself into the woes of financially living alone.”
Calum hums, tearing open a packet. “Sounds like we’ll be neighbors. At least for a little bit.” Paws click on the floor. Too light to be Moose and when Calum glances down, he spies Duke lapping at his water bowl in the kitchen.
“I mean, it’s a couple blocks,” Bree insists. If she says that, if she puts more distance between them, she won’t be tempted to drive through his neighborhood and she won’t be tempted to make a joke about staying over more often. She won’t make any moves tonight either.
“Close enough,” Calum says. “A couple blocks, a couple minutes. I’m sure you’ll always remember this street though, after tonight.”
“Oh, definitely.”
Her drink finished, Calum hands over the mug. Their fingers brush, just a split second in time, hardly enough time to really know it’s happening, yet they know anyway. Bree tightens her hold around the warming ceramic. It’s still too hot to really take a drink. But Bree sips from it anyway, after a couple gentle blows onto the dark brown sweet drink. She prays, chants to herself, that she most definitely should not linger too long on the thought or the way her skin felt electric.
“You sure you’re not hungry? I really don’t mind ordering you something.” Calum clears his throat. There aren’t many times Calum’s glad that the bar seat has a counter at waist height, but this time in particular he’s grateful. His spine still tingles just a little.
“I ate already, thanks.”
“Any dessert? I’ve got ice cream and there’s a great place not too far that delivers cookies.”
Dessert. It’s not even the fact that Calum asks. It’s how he asks. His brows shooting up on his face, thumb pointing over his shoulder to his fridge and freezer. It’s the way he bites his own lip, leaning into the counter on his elbows. Bree’s not sure if it’s some secret language, if he’s asking more than just the tub of sugary confection in his freezer.
“Really, I’m okay. Thank you.”
Calum nods. “Yeah, okay. No problem. Well, I gotta check on that load of laundry. But feel free to watch TV, snuggle with Moose, see if you can champion Duke’s heart. You’re free to whatever’s in the kitchen.”
It’s a curt nod as Bree works down another sip of her drink before Calum leaves. Once she’s sure he’s gone down back into the depths of his place, she drops her head onto her neck. Fuck me, she mouths. She can text Drew, let them know the true details of what the hell is going on. Though Bree knows the response will be a swift, You better fuck him and I want deeds.
Her phone. It’s still dead. Turning on the stool, she spots her purse still on the coffee table and both dogs curled up on one end of the couch. They watch her with curious eyes as she walks over. Thankfully an outlet is nearby with a phone charger already snug into the outlet. Nothing was plugged into it. She hoped Calum wouldn’t mind for the time being.
Plugging in her phone, Bree settles onto the far end of the couch, letting Duke have his space. But Moose is not shy and walks over, head resting in Bree’s lap. “Help me win over Duke, Moose.”
Moose’s response is turning to her back, gazing expectedly. “Okay, sure, since you’re yanking my leg,” Bree laughs, rubbing her hand over Moose’s belly. Duke still doesn’t seem bothered by her presence. She can’t tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Though she’s inclined to say good. He could be barking, and yet, he’s just watching, assessing Bree.
“I get it,” Bree states to Duke. “You’re thinking, sussing me out. I respect that.” Bree didn’t want to be the type to be nosey but staring at the living room and the house itself. What did Calum do? Drew had a decent break in the producing and DJing world and bought a house up here. Does Calum do something similar? And if so, why wasn’t he more worried about having some stranger in his house?
Bree’s phone buzzes. Text messages from Drew and her dad. Old alerts from various group chats and email alerts that were all muted all she drove. Just as she reaches back for it, a snout presses into her hand. “Moose, you’re literally getting snuggles right now,” Bree laughs.
“Oh, he’s not going to like that.”
Bree looks up to Calum who’s grinning and then down to the snout. She gasps at the sight of Duke resting his head against her hand, his body curled up next to her. “Oh my god, oh  my god. Is this real life?” she whispers, looking up to Calum.
“Yeah, this is real life.”
“I would literally die for you and I just met you,” Bree chuckles mostly to herself, gently petting the top of Duke’s head.
Calum tries not to think about how Duke really isn’t all that fond of new people. And for him to curl up next to Bree is an amazing feat. Does Duke sense something Calum can’t? Or maybe they’re both sensing the same thing, that Bree’s striking and funny. And above all, she’s safe. It’s almost like Calum’s known her forever, but maybe Calum just wants to feel that, so it makes everything he’s feeling and on the verge of doing make sense.
“You do realize I literally don’t care if you want to change the channel,” Calum returns, settling on the opposite end of the couch.
“This is literally your house! I don’t want to be disrespectful.”
Bree is a puddle of dogs and is sinking into the cushions of his couch. Calum risks a glance from the movie. He thinks it’s one in the Batman franchise but he can’t be sure. The curls have become evident, even though she’s tried to tame them into a high bun. Her cheeks are full, much like his.
“So what brings you into town? I think you mentioned a new job? You don’t have to get too deep into it if you don’t want to.”
“Yeah, I interned remotely at this magazine for a while. Wrote articles, did some shoots for them. It was mostly music based, looking at underground and indie artists. They had to lay some folks off. But I was already looking to go elsewhere. Got hired and getting paid more so now  I’m moving into the city since it’s not a remote position. My friend Drew’s letting crash with her. I got hired like last week so I hardly had any time to find a place or anything.”
“Drew? Like Drew with the dreads who’s literally DJing at almost every club in this fucking state Drew?”
“You know her?” Bree asks.
“Yes! I met her in the studio a couple times. I didn’t even realize she was in the neighborhood.”
“Studio?” Bree figured Calum had to be a creative type and very successful at that. She just hadn’t suspected that thought to be true.
“I dabble,” Calum returns, shrugging his shoulders. Dabble sounds betters, doesn’t put too much pressure or anything.
“Looks like dabbling is working out well for you.”
“So, do you shoot shows for certain bands or just whoever?”
“Just whoever. In some ways I want to be on the cutting edge. A few bands from the old magazine I covered caught a wave. I don’t want to say I’m the reason why, but,” the sentence trails off into a fit of giggles.
“But you’re the reason why,” Calum concludes with a laugh. The two of them talk for hours. Bree telling Calum about the embarrassing trip to the gas station when she realized she had pulled in the wrong way to fill up her tank today and how when she was a kid she’d constantly mix up her left and her right. She still does if she’s honest, so she’s the worst person to ask for direction.
Calum doesn’t share a lot, the occasional story about when he and his friends lived a house together and going a little too hard on the whiskey in coffee and how once he split his pants during a jig. Though mostly Calum just let’s Bree talk. He finds that she can go a mile a minute but she’s good about pulling at certain strings. When she brings up knowing Drew since they were kids, and Calum mentions his friends, she asks about them. Just what it was like growing up with them and what about living with them that he misses.
“Honestly, I’d rather talk to you than be interviewed by any other talk show hot for a decade at least.” Calum states it only after realizing it’s nearing midnight. Michael’s come and gone to pick up Moose. Bree’s hot chocolate has turned cold.
“It’s because I hate interviewing people. I like having conversations,” Bree returns. Duke’s settled between them, facing Calum now but doesn’t shy away when Bree scratches along his back.
“I’m not much of a talker, normally.”
“If that’s your way of saying I’m talking too much, you can just say it. I’m used to it.”
Calum shakes his head. “No, no, not at all. It’s just, you’re easy to talk to, that’s all.” Bree curls up, feet tucked under herself as she faces Calum. HIs t-shirt seems to swallow her up but also she wears it like she owns it, the front tucked into the band of the sweatpants just a little. “Like really easy to talk to,” Calum whispers, trying not to imagine the sight of her beneath him. He hasn’t had something like this--a conversation that could last hours and the ease to almost spill his guts-- in years outside of the guys.
“I know I’ve probably said this like a thousand times, but really thank you. For helping me out. It means a lot.” Bree looks up from her lashes. She knows that look that Calum’s giving her. It’s the eyes from when he questioned dessert. She didn’t want to believe that he was into her, not like that at least.
“You--Really, it’s nothing.”
His gaze hasn’t faltered, as if he’s reading every thought behind her skull. It’s intense and god, it’s not the thing she needs. Keep it together, she reprimands herself. “I’m just, I’m going to dump this.” Bree stands, taking her mug into the kitchen.
“No, no let me,” Calum rushes, pushing to his feet. “You’re the guest.”
Bree wishes Calum had stayed on the couch. She needed to get away, just to breath and think clearly for two seconds. But Calum’s right behind her and his hand reaches out behind her to take the mug. At the sink, they face each other. Close enough that she can feel just how warm he is, smell the Old Spice body wash she saw under the sink on his skin.
“Really, I don’t mind. You’re already doing a lot today.”
Calum didn’t realize just how tall Bree was until now. She stands just about eye to eye with him, only off by a few inches. Four or five, if Calum had to venture a guess. And it would be so easy to kiss her. Just drop his chin a hair and capture her full pouty lips. “Helping someone in need isn’t a lot.”
Bree exhales her laughter. “It’s not a lot when you’re a good person, that’s for sure.” She tugs at the mug just a little, pulling into her body just a hair. There’s not much space between them at it stands. “Please,” she whispers. She doesn’t even know what she’s saying please for. Is it please let me wash the damn mug and walk away? Or is please just kiss me already so there’s no more dancing around this tension?
Calum moves the mug, both of them moving along with his instrumentation. The mug settles into the basin of the sink with a soft thud, the spoon clicking against the sides. “Please what?”
And the words are falling from her lips before she can stop herself. “Kiss me.”
Calum exhales just a hair and cups her jaw into his palm. Bree meets him though, closes the already centimeters between them. Their lips touch for a brief moment. It feels like the first sip of ice cold water on a hot water. It’s satisfying, makes you exhale in relief and it’s only in that moment as the first slides down your throat that you realize how thirsty you’ve been. Calum secures a hold to her waist, pushing her into the counter. Their lips meet again, and again, slightly harsh exhales as hands pull at t-shirts and tanks.
Calum trails a hand under the hem of the t-shirt, running his palm over her stomach and side. Bree shudders at the touch, head falling back on her neck. Calum seizes the opportunity to lay a trail of kisses across her throat. Her sighs are like literal music to his ears. He sucks at the skin to hear it again. And he’s greeted with something much better. Bree moans, arms locking around his neck. Her fingers dance along his shoulder and back and when her head finally reconnects, she reconnects her mouth to Calum’s.
The kitchen turns into a bedroom. All Bree focuses on is the feel of Calum against her, as shirts are shed and pants too. Calum swallows down every sound she gives him. He drinks in the sight of her, head thrown back into his pillows, and legs wrapped around his waist. Bree kisses along his biceps, teeth grazing over the tattoos on his skin. Their senses fill with each other, the sighs, the moans, the pleas, the encouragement and even the awkward shuffle and giggles. Calum never wants to hear his name for another set of lips ever. Not with the way it falls so easily from Bree’s mouth. Bree hums when she hears the grunted curses Calum exhales as his hips rock into hers.
With Calum’s arm draped over her naked waist, he presses a kiss to her cheek. Bree turns to face him, a grin at her lips. “I’m washing that damn mug. Just so you know.”
Calum laughs, shoulders shaking and he squeezes at her waist. “Why am I not surprised at that fact?”
“I don’t care if I have to sneak out of the bed at 5 in the morning. I’ll do it.”
And true to her word, Bree does wash the morning. It’s helped of course when Calum’s alarm goes off and in the shuffle of him rousing awake and trying to turn if off, Bree slips out from the sheets. She throws on his t-shirt again and bolts to the kitchen. The morning is nice though, though she has to steal clothes from the trunk of her car before they can transfer all the boxes into Calum’s SUV.
Calum closes the trunk down, wearing the t-shirt she borrowed and in jeans. Sunglasses cover his face while a trucker hat hides away the curls. “Tow truck said what time again?”
“10 am. So another,” Bree checks her phone, “10 minutes, hopefully. Thanks, again.”
“Really, don’t worry about it. And you can stop saying thanking me. I know it’s a thing you’re probably going to do like a thousand more times.”
Bree swats at his arm. “Look here, I’m trying to be polite. You can be a sour puss elsewhere.”
Calum cackles. “Sour puss? That’s a new one. Also, you sure you don’t want any breakfast? I know a place nearby. Great pancakes.”
“Not much of a breakfast person.”
He nods. “Noted. What about lunch?”
“Yeah, I’m definitely a lunch person.”
“Good, because they have good sandwiches and fries too.”
“Was-Did you just ask me on a lunch date?”
The rumble of a truck cuts through the open air. Both of them turn to see the tow truck coming down the block. Once Bree gets the finalized details about which car shop they’re taking her car and giving said car shop the okay to call her once it’s ready, Bree turns to Calum. “You never answered my question and if it is a date, I’m paying.” Calum insisted on helping her out by paying for the tow.
Calum’s smile is bright. “I’m not a cheap date.”
“I’m sure you’re not.”
“Is Drew home? Do you have a key? We can drop your stuff off, eat, and then check up on your car?”
“Sounds like a plan to me.”
“I know you said you’re bad with directions, but I need you to navigate.” It’s not hard or long before they reach Drew’s place. Not quite long enough for a full song to finish. Drew’s out on the porch when the two of them roll up.
She laughs, leaning onto the railing. “Bree when you told me you got stranded I thought you landed on the side of the road. Fancy meeting you again, Calum.”
“Hi, Drew. Turns out we’re neighbors.”
Drew arches her eyebrow, looking at back at Bree. Bree holds up her hands. “I’ll explain everything later. Over dinner.” Calum tries to bite back his grin, but glances over to Bree. The question dances across his eyebrows, everything everything? Bree rolls her eyes, going to the trunk.
____________________
When a knock sounds at Calum’s door, he almost doesn’t answer it. That laziness is helped by the fact that he was almost on the verge of sleep. But another knock immediately follows it. “Coming!” he calls out. He checks his phone first, but sees no text from Bree.
As the door cracks open, Calum’s greeted with a bright smile. Bree stands at his door. No rain this time, no mascara running down her face. Just her full cheeks and pouty lips and bright smile. “You said you’d text me.”
“I made cookies,” she returns, holding up the carrying tray. “As a thank you.”
Calum laughs, opening the door wider to let her in. Bree walks in and immediately spots Duke on the couch. “My precious boy!” she coos.
Calum takes the tray knowing that she’ll get distracted soon enough. It’s been a little over three weeks since Bree showed up at his doorstep. Most days they call, or text. Occasionally, Calum drags her out of the house to grab dinner with him or a couple drinks. There’s some unspoken rule, an energy between them. They keep it casual. But even still conversations on the phone can go until 2 in the morning. Calum just listening to the sound of her voice. He asks nearly any question under the sun just to keep her talking.
Bree asks more about the band, never crossing a line. Mostly to see how the other guys are doing, especially their dogs. Calum tells her a bit more about the music he’s making but work is mostly kept separate. Bree doesn’t want Calum to think she’s using him. Calum asks about projects but never makes her divulge more than she’s comfortable with.
Calum cracks open the tray and sees a mass of chocolate chip cookies displayed in front of him. He picks one off the top and the center practically melts in his mouth. He hums at the taste but knows there’s no way he can have that many cookies in his house. “This is too many cookies,” he calls out over the bite.
“That’s why it’s called sharing!” Bree returns, kissing the top of Duke’s head. She wonders into the kitchen, taking a cookie as well. “Did I interrupt a nap? I’m sorry.” His eyes are puffy and he keeps blinking.
“Was trying,” he admits, lower back resting into the edge of the counter.
“I’m sorry! I’ll go. Oh my god, really. I didn’t mean to intrude.” Bree is quick to push away from the counter and almost gets to the front door. Calum’s quick though and wraps her waist up in her arms.
“Nap with me?”
“I’m not sleepy. I just wanted to stuff my face with cookies and cuddle Duke.”
“You can do that, just stay with me please.” He buries his nose into her neck, inhaling the scent of her shampoo. He covers her neck in kisses between pleas. Bree giggles at the light scratch of Calum’s scruff. He’s started letting the bread grow out, even though it’s a slightly pitiful excuse of a beard.
“Fine, fine, fine. I’ll stay.”
With her head resting on his chest, she listens to the steady rhythm of his heart. His hold is warm, but not uncomfortable. Duke’s at their feet and Bree thinks maybe she could take a nap. It wouldn’t hurt at all. Especially not if it was a nap on Calum’s chest. It was crazy to her, to think that fate had stranded on the side of a street but also introduced her to a great friend. And maybe there was more. Maybe there’s more for them down the road. But for now, they had an understanding.
“Did you think when you showed up at my door like a drowned rat this is what would happened?” Calum’s voice is soft and a little mumbly.
“No, I was bracing for you to be a serial killer. And instead you’re a serial cuddler, so I’ll that that any day of the week, hands down.”
They laugh, chest shaking against each other. “I’m a lover, not a fighter.”
“It’s much appreciated,” Bree says in a whisper. She lifts her head just a little. His eyes are close, lashes practically brushing long his cheek. She lightly traces the moles around his mouth and cheek.
“That’s not napping, Missy.” Her response is a soft kiss and Bree rests her head against on his chest, arms squeezing at his waist. The moment is still and feels like it could never be broken.

Picking Dad!Calum up from the airport.
Tai was six months old when Calum had to go on another tour. This time it was a smaller European one, thankfully only two weeks. It would be hell and back for the boys with the time zones but nothing they couldn't handle or something new (but at that point they were rarely new things regarding flying).
Nevertheless it was harder for Calum to leave this time around. Not only having to say goodbye to you but also Tai.
Little Tai who was learning and growing every day. Right now training on motor skills and learning how to sit up. Something Cal loved to practice with him every day.
He was completely taken with his and yours little one. And you loved watching them. Two peas in the pot. Tai was Calum as a kid again just a bit more stubborn, trying new things everyday and ambitious to get his way. You already knew that toddler years were not going to be easy.
It was a Friday when the boys returned. Catching a flight overnight and would be landing around eight. You were thankful, meaning you could take off from work and be able to pick Calum up.
Crystal and you planed to get Cal and Mike together. Since Crystal was too pregnant to be able to drive but still wanted to pick Mike up. You offered to get her.
You got up early. Tai needed a feeding at around six. Thankfully Tai loves cuddles in the morning. So after the feeding you could cuddle your little one while he bubbled to you in his baby language. Exploring his own fingers and occasionally your face. You tried to take as much cuddle time before he was too old and wouldn't want to be squished by you. Alone the thought made you hold onto Tai older.
At around seven thirty you got up. Walking to Tai Harry Potter themed room (something you had insisted on as soon as you knew you were pregnant) and getting him ready. Taking some clothes for him and changing his diaper as well as getting him dressed. Giving him a little bite ring for his growing teeth to keep him occupied.
Once Tai was ready you went back to yours and Cals bedroom and getting ready yourself before going down and making sure that you eat. Tai was already rolling around and playing happily.
You were glad that his mood seemed good. Tai was usually a calm baby but even he had his bad days and getting him into the car sit when he is crumpy would have not been good. Especially because you didn't want to stress Crystal out. Preganany was hard enough and you didn't want to make it harder for her.
Before you stopped at Mikes and Crystal's you made a stop at the flower shop. You smiled and gave Tai a kiss once you got him out.
"Let's get Daddy his Welcome Home present, Tai." You pressed another kiss to his head while he responded to you. Little baby giggles coming from his once he saw the flowers.
Tai was at least a bit familiar with the shop and flowers since it was a normal trip Calum or you took him at least once a week.
You walked a bit around the shop. Watching in between for maybe something Tai would react to and he did to a bundle of yellow tulips. You grabbed them together with a couple red and pink ones.
The florist was nice enough to make a bouquet out of them for you while interacting with Tai who was trying in his one way to get to the flowers, eyes wide watching the nice lady and arms towards the flowers.
Once she was done, you thanked her and payed. Taking the flowers in one hand, Tai in the other arm and hurried back to the car. You took your time and now were almost late to pick Crystal up.
Grateful she was already standing outside, you parked close to her.
"Hey love"
"Hi Crystal" She gave you a little kiss on your cheek and  turning around cooing to Tay before getting her seatbelt on. Once she was ready you started driving and making your way through the streets of busy L.A.
"I'm so excited to see Michael."
"It's time they get back." You agreed while taking the turn to get to the parking place of the airport.
"Was it hard on Tai?"
"He seemed like he was searching for Cal sometimes. Especially in the morning but he seems fine."
"Hm, I really nervous for the next tour."
"Don't worry. I know it's not easy but if you need help then you can always reach out. I'm sure KayKay and Sierra would help, too."
Crystal gave you a thankful smile while you parked the car. Both of you getting out and you grabbing Tai and the flowers. Crystal smirking happily at the flowers.
"This is so cute that Cal and you still give each other flowers." You could feel your cheeks hearing up over her comment and a smile on your lips.
"I hope there won't be too much people."
"Mike said they took an earlier flight so maybe we should be good."
You nooded to her and once you arrived at the pick up area there were just a few older people standing. Close to them Sierra and Kay Kay with Hayley (Ashtons and her two year old) who you both greeted. Talking among you all with Hayley interacted with Tai. Watching the baby closely and taking his hands. She was so distracted she almost missed her dad coming out first.
"Dada!“ Once she caught a glimpse she ran over to Ashton followed by Kay who greeted him.
Calum right behind him you walked over to him. Both of you having big smiles. He hugged Tai and you for a while. Holding you close before Tai began protesting.
"Hey buddy. Were you good for your Mama?" Tai watched Cal with wide eyes and a big smile. Making baby voices back at him and Cal pressing endless kisses on his head.
Before he could take Tai he saw the flowers in your hand and pressed a happy kiss on your lips.
"I missed you two so much."
"We missed you as well, Cal." You gave him the flowers and he smelled them for a moment before pressing another kiss on you.
"Thank you, my little flower." He whispered against your lips before taking Tai as well. Ashton came over and you took the time to greet him and Luke as well as saying bye before you all split to get to your cars.
"Hey, little buddy." Michael greeted Tai, holding Crystal's hand and walking between her and Calum. Both of them getting in the back with Tai between them in his seat.
It didn"t take long before you got back to Michael's and Crystal's, saying your goodbyes and getting back to yours. Calum holding your hand the whole way to your house.
Once you got back, Cal took Tai and his suitcase while you got the flowers. Putting them in a vase while Cal sat down with him, laying Tai on his play mat to have tummy time and roll around.
Once you're done you sit down next to Cal and he leans against you with his head on your shoulder.
"I can't wait for tomorrow." He whispers next to you and your turn to him.
"Why?"
“I have a surprise."
"You're going to tell me what?“
"Nope, it's a surprise and you going to have to wait." He teases while tapping your nose. You roll your eyes at him before pressing another kiss on him. Playing with his hand and fingers.
"I love you."
"I love you too, my Wildflower."
(there will be a part 2 with the surprise❤️)

Can you please continue the one about duke, cal, and ex because i need some angst in my life rn
(Here's part 1)
Knocks on your old door, feet pacing back and forth behind it and heavy sighs were all heard through your quiet apartment. You opened the door only slightly, peeking through the small hole. A billion different ideas rolled through your mind, of who it could be. An old roommate who forgot their stuff, a friend who wanted to surprise you with takeout, maybe even your cousin from across the country. Calum though, wasn't on your mind. Not today, not anymore.
He barely noticed the door was open, too focused in his little bubble as he wouldn't stop walking around. It wasn't even open, your eyes barely saw his tensed body. But no one knew Calum the way that you did.
"Calum?"
His eyes darted towards the door, instantly filling with hope. "Tour is stressing me out, I can't do it. I fucking can't." He slurred.
"Calum, are you drunk? Because if you are, I'd suggest you'd-"
He shook his head immidetly, "I'm not."
You shut the door and with that his eyes shut too. You didn't owe him anything anymore, not one string stayed attached to him anymore. You wanted to spit at him to leave, to go and fuck his girlfriend till oblivion, he had one. He had a love. But the door was opened, after you unlocked the upper bar. You didn't have it in you to tell him to go. Calum stared at you with a clear question in his eyes before you motioned for him to walk inside.
It felt familiar to him. The lamp by the couch was new, Calum remember breaking one one night. The pillows have changed again like you do every season, but other that it was hard to spot any difference. He sat down and allowed himself to exhale when you sat next to him.
"I'm sorry, I- I didn't know where or what else to do," he started, rubbing at his eyes.
You shrugged. If it happened a year ago, right after you broke up, you'd try. You'd try to remind him that it's worth fighting, that as long as he had that tiny light in him burning to keep moving- he has to. While all these words were right and true about touring, they were also very true about the two of you. As long as there was the tiny spark of love, you wished you could both keep fighting. Now, it felt like trying to comfort a stranger.
"What's different about this tour?"
Calum met your eyes, slowly as uncertainty clouded his eyes. "I don't know," he took a second to think, you could actually see his gears moving. "Maybe I do, who's going to be here when I come back."
You sighed, "Cal..." the nickname sounded just as stranger at second thought.
"Don't 'Cal' me." He groaned.
It was a full second of complete silence, before you snorted. A loud giggle burst through your lips, Calum had to chuckle too.
"Remember when I broke that lamp? Best fucking night of my life." Calum shook his head with a laugh, especially after he saw you blushing.
You coughed. "We've had sex on deserted islands, literal heavens, and in the craziest cities in the world, and the night we've had sex on my couch and had no lights besides that lamp because of the powers, was the best night of your life?" You teased.
Calum nodded all along. "And the moment I broke it? It felt like a goddamn miracle."
"It was romantic," you admitted, and allowed yourself to sit a little closer.
"Not as romantic as-"
"Don't fucking say it! I was so embressed!" You covered his mouth with your hand.
Calum laughed, it felt so good to let out a laugh. He felt like he hasn't in forever, and yet it felt like it has been forever since he's been with you. "You were gorgeous, Ashton thought so too." He teased.
You rolled your eyes. "I'm never ever surprising you on a tour bus," it felt as if you'll ever be given the chance to surprise him again.
At the mention of the word, Calum stopped laughing. The smile was wiped away fast, the sigh and anxiety rolled fast back and crept into his thoughts.
"Hey, I believe in you." You held his face in your hands, cupping his cheeks and holding him. "I don't know what makes you question everything, but I do know you've got this."
"How the fuck do you always know what to say?" Calum smiled, cheeks still squishing beneath your hands. "You really really know me."
You shrugged with a soft smile before taking your hands off of him, they felt like he blew warm air into them to heat you up like old times. "You're easy, Hood."
For a second it all connected in Calum's head. It was always about who he comes home to. Who waits at the airport, or at home awake with a sleepy smile. Who travels half way across the world to see a show. Who he craves to hold close every night before he shuts his eyes. Who he needs to squeeze and hold tight, and who from all people is the only person in the world he wants to spend the rest of his life with.
"I wish we were easy sometimes."
Brown eyes widen as Calum felt his heart beat faster when he heard those words from you, it almost annoyed him how easily you could just read his mind.
His mouth opened, but his features didn't seem to hold what you wanted to hear him say. You knew he wasn't wishing for the same things, you knew his heart was somewhere else. "Don't worry about it, I know."
"Know...?" Calum asked, you always read his mind. Did you read them now too? Did you figure he wants you to be easy too?
You nodded. "They're waiting for you at home, Cal. Go home, you'll miss them at tour."
Calum smiled sadly as he stood up, you followed towards the door to let him out. "Have a nice tour, Cal."
He waved silently before stepping out, mind yelling at him to turn and speak. To turn and yell. To turn and kiss.
"Hey?" He called, "I promise I'll get you a new lamp someday."

hi! i’d like to request an ashton fic where ash and the reader go clubbing as friends and he get’s really jealous when a guy would come up to her so he’d basically scare them off 🥺
Notes: this is low key shit lol i’m sorry it’s so cringe but enjoy anyways my loves :)
word count: 1211
The flashing lights illuminated the dark and crowded club I was in with my friends. I couldn’t remember why we had come here, some sort of celebration, probably to signify the end of another tour for them. I was on the middle of the dance floor, squished in between Sierra and Calum’s giant sweaty body, but I was just as drenched. Her and Crystal had managed to convince me to actually wear a dress tonight, which I rarely did, and with how tight it was hugging every curve of my body, I could feel a number of unwanted eyes on me as I was drunkenly twirled around by my two closest friends.
“I’m gonna go get a drink, do you want to come with me?” I yelled to Si as I halted our, no doubt, embarrassing excuse of dancing.
“Yes! I need more vodka,” She giggled while we snuck away from Calum and the rest of the horde.
I was beyond parched, Sierra and I had been dancing together for almost the entire three hours we’d been here before Cal joined us. Knowing I’d have a bad hangover the next morning if I kept going, I went against my irrational side and ordered an ice water to sip. Right as our drinks arrived, Luke came up behind his girlfriend, eliciting a squeal of joy from her, and she downed her glass faster than she should’ve, then tried to pull me back onto the dance floor.
“I’m gonna hangout here for a bit, Si,” I sat down on the bar stool closest to me to rest my aching feet and squeezed her arm. “I need a break, go have fun with Luke.”
“Whatever you say, Y/N/N.”
I was by myself at the bar, I couldn’t find any of the others in our group who tagged along, and I was too tired to go searching for them to make the slight feeling of anxiety from being alone go away. I was only going to be here until I finished my first water, then order another and I’d be back on my way to Sierra or to find Michael and Ashton sitting at the table they snagged when we first arrived. My mind wandered to Ashton, in my still drunk state. We’d been good friends for as long as him and Sierra had known one another, I knew all of them thanks to her, and we’d occasionally flirted while clubbing or smoking a joint at one of Calum’s notorious parties, but lately it felt deeper than casual flirting between two friends. I always had a soft spot for the drummer, but I didn’t know if his feelings were mutual.
Before I could delve more into my dreamy thoughts of the raven haired boy, I felt an unfamiliar arm snake around my waist. When I looked up, I was met with more unfamiliar features. I knew men had been watching me all night, but I didn’t think any of them would have the guts to actually approach me, guess I assumed wrong.
“Hey pretty thing,” His voice slurred.
“Hi,” I shakily said. “Do you think you could let go of me? I’m happy to have a conversation with you, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t touch me.”
“Pretty thing’s got some spice to her, yeah?” He spoke into my ear. “I like that in my women.”
I pushed him off of me, causing him to stumble backwards a bit, but his arm was still clutching my waist, and I fell off my stool with him. I stumbled into him more, and my heartbeat started racing. I turned my head away from him and closed my eyes, trying to think of a way to get myself out of the potentially dangerous situation without causing a scene, but before I could act on anything, I was being pulled away and into someone’s chest.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing to my girlfriend?” Ashton’s normally giddy voice sounded pissed, and filled with venom.
Girlfriend? She’s been sitting at the bar alone for the past twenty minutes, some boyfriend you are,” The stranger scoffed.
Ashton didn’t respond, only tucked me closer into his large body and started walking away from the scene, with the man still on the floor, staring up at us. Once we got back to the table, he sat me down in between him and Michael, easing my nerves to know I was hidden between the two bulky Australians. As the night went on, I clung closer to Ashton, feeling comfort in the way he scared off an unwanted stranger, but also called me his girlfriend.
“Hey, Y/N, are you feeling alright now?” He ducked his head to be level with my ear.
“Yeah,” I softly spoke while burying my head into his shoulder.
“Do you wanna head home soon? I was gonna order an Uber once Calum came back to let him know I’m heading out.”
“Yes please,” I responded. Ashton pulled away from me slightly to take out his phone and get us a ride back. My mind back to daydreaming about the man in front of me, how his gorgeous hazel eyes looked concerned every time they had met mine tonight, how he made me feel safer just by being around me. Calum came into my peripheral vision while Ash put his phone away.
“Cal, Y/N and I are gonna head out,” He said as he stood up with me.
“Okay, have fun mate,” He winked at Ashton as we started to walk away. He grasped my hand and led me out the hot and overcrowded club, out into the much appreciated cool night air. Having my hand being clasped in his only made my swirling head worsen, I couldn’t deny the attraction I had for him anymore, I needed to either confess or let my emotions consume me.
“What was that about? With Cal before we left?” I asked once we arrived at a small bench to wait on. I made the mistake of looking into his soft eyes, they changed into ones of embarrassment and worry after I asked him my question.
“I should’ve told you this a while ago,” His gaze fell to his boots instead of looking at me, and my heartbeat spiked in anticipation. “I like you Y/N, a lot, so much that I think I’m in love with you.”
My breath hitched in my throat, he just admitted to what I had been feeling for almost two years. I wasn’t sure if my feelings were as strong as love, but I knew I wanted to grow to love him the same.
“I like you too, Ash,” I said as my left hand reached out to cup his cheek and pull his forehead against mine. “I don’t know if I love you yet, but I can definitely see that happening in the future.”
His hand went behind my neck, and Ashton crashed his soft lips against mine. It was the best kiss I ever experienced, there was undeniable chemistry between us, and it fueled us as his tongue slipped into my mouth for a moment, before he reluctantly pulled with a smirk on his beautiful face.
“Let’s get you home, baby.”
