This Week in BL - When good chemistry goes bad

May 2023 Wk 3

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 4 of 10 - yes it jumped to the top of the standings, the kiss was THAT good, best of the year so far. So soft and yet so sweet and yearning and with a proper chemistry - body, breath, everything. Also... there was plot happening this ep, but who cares about that? Some additional thoughts, now my brain has rebooted from that kiss. I do suspect Pat of still being a player: he is awful smooth, and he may want revenge for being jacked along for 2 years (I would). Ep 4 is early for a kiss like that, which means pacing-wise we may be in for a separation/break up around ep 8.

Step By Step (Thai Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 5 of 10 (MDL still says 12, but Gaga still says 10) - Pat, dear, your gay is squirting all over our screens. Meanwhile… That is the smallest presidential suite bed I’ve ever seen. Lucky for us of course. And lucky for Jeng. Me with the side dishes = UH OH.

Our Skyy 2 (My School President) eps 9-10 - Alt reality where Tinn is in charge of the music club and Gun is the school president with the crush. Basically, it’s an excuse for them to play each others’ parts (which just highlighted how well they were cast, originally). Ultimately, Gemini is a better piner, and Fourth is a better tsundere. Although the reversed “holding it over his head” was v funny & Fourth IS a decent seme. (I also realized what I like so much about Fourth, like Saint he’s one of those rare full body actors.) Sound was a great uke and I loved how they changed his makeup for the role (did you notice?). TiwPor were as adorably ridiculous as ever. I liked the minor baby pairing for Aun, too. Still my NO SIGNING holds (although there was lots of dancing to counterbalance). In the end, all this really did was make me wanna rewatch the original. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. FYI The MV was a parody of HCTM, BB, 1k*. 8/10

A Boss and a Babe (Fri YouTube) ep 12fin - It was a cute sappy ending for a cute-ish sappy-ish show. I cannot abide that the mom who condoned the rape of her daughter got forgiven. No. Stop it GMMTV. Review below.

The Promise (Thai Weds YT & WeTV) ep 9 of 10 - I'm in trouble when I'm rooting for everybody BUT the main couple. I guess Nan doesn’t have a NO SINGING policy. Also I guess Nan was waiting for Phu all along? This show. ALSO could we not have just ended it here?

Past-senger (Thai Weds Gaga) ep 11 of 12 eps - I don’t understand. What? Where did all these new characters come from? Do we care about the hets? Not even slightly. What is anyone doing? What’s going on? do I care abotu anyone anymore? No. Please make it stop.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - OMG so adorable, so repressed, so reserved, so soft, so awkward, so special. Heart melting. Also. Hungry. The WAY Minoru looks at Yutaka when he’s eating (now that he knows the history). The way we got to see the exact moment that Minoru realizes he is in love. Perfection.

Star Struck (Korea iQIYI & Gaga) ep 1-2 of 8 - Zuho (Kpop SF9 - noted good egg) opposite rookie actor Kim In Sung (the one with the crush). icky is being weird about it but it looks like Gaga also picked it up? Depends on your territory I suppose. Anygay: Friends since childhood, jock/nerd, puppy/cat and I sense bi-himbo confusion and pining introvert gay. There’s family strife plus class issues and it has some interesting things to say already about the nature of friendship, romance, and jealousy. I like it, weirdly reminds me of something that might have come out of China. Not early CBL, but some of the later stuff that was censored but hearkened to Addicted. This has the feel of what China could have made now (were things politically different). Because of this feel, I’m not confident in this being an HEA or even a true BL but it is interesting enough for me to bump it way up the ranks.

Happy Merry Ending (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 7-8fin - I get why SJ pushed JH away, but I kinda agree that SJ is too much work. Abused or not, I wouldn’t put in the damn effort - so I guess I’m glad SJ took a year off to figure his shizz out? Far be it from me to agree with a year break in a Kdrama, tho. I didn’t even mind that they were separated most of these 2 eps: it was nice to see a Seme told no, who actually backed off and did as he was told. Plus the running of the gays (how Japan of you SK). I’m assuming that this was the final episode and that Viki thinking that there are 2 more is bonkers? Because this felt like a finale. For me this one had a stronger finish than any other aspect of the show (odd when the couple spent the bulk of it apart). Oh! And someone give Shin Myung Sung (the surfer bestie) his own damn BL, m’kay? Review below.

Love Mate (Korea Thurs Viki) eps 5-6 of 8 - Longest elevator ride in the world. Honorifics discussion! My favorite! And, “there is only one bed but they slept together on the floor anyway” trope. A BL staple. Also the tie/lanyard grab. Another fav. Still pushy puppy stalker remains creepy manipulative obsessive warped hotness. Basically KBL version of trash and… I’m into it. We all got our kinks, I guess.

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) - Such a cat. I’m reminded of Milk. It’s cute. They cute. I like it.

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - So is the nude dining meant to be some kind of weird allegory for repressed gayness?

House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.

The Day I Loved You (Pinoy YouTube) eps 6-7 of 10 - Terminal illness for the sunshine. I bounced at ep 6. DNF.

Love Syndrome finished its run on WeTV (I stopped at ep 2) - anyone wanna weight in with thoughts on the ending and whether I should binge or not? I do love Lee Long Shi.

Happy Merry Ending - Stars Lee Dong Won (KNK) as an ex-idol turned wedding singer with an abusive ex and a panic disorder + the sunshine pianist who falls in love with him. Timid tsundere & sweetheart gay is an interesting match. They’re gentle together, almost kindly and there is a calm ache to their pairing. However, it lost its way as a BL, being more about the main character’s struggle than the romance. It had a strong finish but ultimately the premise & characters meant this was never going to be one of my favorites. 8/10

A Boss and a Babe - With an inconsistent narrative and self-sabotaging characters this was not the Thai BL office romance I was hoping for. I spent most if it feeling manipulated without good reason and sorry for ForceBook. They did their best with a shoddy script (AGAIN!) and none of its flaws were their fault. This show was all over the place and so am I about it. It’s better than Enchanté but that’s not really saying much. 7/10 I guess

AWKWARD...

The JM question... JK with his "yes, in New York", pointing back like it's far away.

Well, so far away apparently that he couldn't join one of the shortest lives ever JK had, and one he couldn't get over fast enough.

*Side note: probably not going to post about that live, given there was really nothing post worthy in it. Other than him loving the cake, him being a little sick, him telling us there will be more performances and he has a schedule following the live, him telling us he slept 2 hours last night, up at 4:30 am (meaning he went to sleep at 2:30 am, I guess fulfilling his promise to ________ seven days a week).

Like I said, he couldn't wait to get it over fast enough.

And back to GMA.

The rap has male pronouns and is clearly sung to a male.

(That swallow your pride line is...ok...).

In the recorded song and the MV Latto is the one rapping, mostly, JK does the singing.

But in the performance, JK did part of the rap.

Loud and clear.

So, someone clearly went and told him he just cannot sing the lyrics as is, and went and changed the line "I make him never think about cheatin'" to a female pronoun - her. Cause Scoot, he has A LOT of money banking on this song, and ain't no one, especially not JK, going to ruin it for him with no explicit queer shit.

Thing is, it comes out worse in a sense, lol.

Cause that mix of female pronoun with lines that are clearly male intended kind of makes your mind go to other places which I will not detail here right now (well, if you have one and it's not empty like the y/ns that will listen to her and swallow it like the imbeciles that they are).

And yeah, JK's English might not be the greatest, but he most definitely knows what the lyrics he's singing are.

He knows what it means when he sings "fucking you seven days a week" and he knows what the lyrics of the rap part are as well, it being his damn song. And he definitley knows what "come here, baby, let me swallow your pride" means too.

So, JK singing this rap, with the male pronouns, talking about explicit sex acts with a man, this my friends was a definite no no from the Scoot. NO SIR. NOT ON HIS WATCH.

Do we have to say closeted once again? And prices to pay as well?

So yeah, JK had an almost free hand with the photo shoot concept, and obviously had styling choices of his own in the MV and the performance today (cough JM mirroring going on again cough). I think it's also safe to say he was involved in the MV concept itself and the storyline and idea for the scenes. And we don't know just how much say he had with the lyrics of the song (although it's clear that he does feel a connection with the song, and I'm not surprised either with some of the mirroring going on there to JM's Like crazy), but clearly for JK's part, there are no female pronouns.

So, if he wanted to rap, having to say the word her in the rap was a price to pay, which he did. All with the 4 buff tattooed male dancers prancing around him.

For a song about a clearly hetro man singing about having sex 7 days a week with a woman that is kind of a weird, let's say, choice of backup dancers, I have to say.

Or not, seeing that this man does not have one straight bone in his body...

Thinking back though to that line he inserted the her...

"I make him never think about cheatin'"...

This one rings so JK...

"I make JM never think about cheatin'"...

Yeah, that sounds about right...

ok, i was in the shower thinking about the concept/plot for icip mv + my thoughts began to spiral as more layers of unhinged washed over me so if you'll allow me to just place some stupid plot predictions here... *cracks knuckles, clears throat*

so Käärijä is pregnant...

HE IS PREGNANT WITH THE NEW KÄÄRIJÄ. PREGNANT WITH A NEW VERSION OF HIMSELF.

i don't know if that at least has been theorised already?, but that's what i'm mainly guessing the concept is.

with all the 'coming soon' hints in the staging and on insta? YEAH THE BIRTH OF A NEW KÄÄRIJÄ / A NEW ERA is coming soon, making room for new sounds, new styles and newer audiences.

also preparing nicely for the upcoming album, could be intro: icip?

so now we have that out of the way, here's my icip mv prediction

cut to häärijä waddling into the woodland clearing - he spots tommy and kä *ahem* 'partying' together and immediately gets jealous/protective of our current cha cha cha käärijä (excuse you that's his best bro. bf. bro. dance partner)...

häärijä furiously waddles out from behind a tree into the midst of the rave, revealing himself + trying to separate them (complete with concerned fast eyebrow wiggling expressions from the yellow man)

käärijä gets pissed at this (häärijä why are u here again ruining the vibe and my fun mf) author's note: häärijä is a precious angel stop being mean to him >:((

tommy either hands käärijä a shovel he bought for protection from forest beasts and käärijä hits häärijä round the head with it (lmao no) and they kidnap him / or they just kidnap him minus that lol.

cut to a shot of tommy and käärijä digging häärijä's grave (the grave seems more häärijä shaped to me) as they stare eerily from above shovelling dirt onto the camera from a häärijä in the ground pov - burying him (kind of alive??)

... at the next slower bit (pre-chorus?) this is where the baby (new era käärijä) is made as they resume the gay agenda.

so my idea is that obviously they can't be TOO suggestive on yt (everyone booed,) so the way they 'make a baby' is to conceive through the art of TOUCHING HANDS. (so romantic) see below:

something akin to the ken's 'beaching off' if you've seen the barbie movie (super gay ;)

then the next section of the song the new käärijä is created/comes into existence and reveals his new image / personality (water birth scene in the lake with tommy helping? lmao)

as soon as "right here right now? yeaaaaahhh..." is spoken and the final intense drop comes, they finally kill present cha cha cha käärijä probs through drowning him in a lake (what is the lake for? idk you decide, i think it's 2 separate murders)

the new era käärijä + tommy finish raving and collapse by the lake.

i'm one of those (rare) jikookers who actively manifests jk watching and reacting to tae content on live, and he kinda did today with winter bear and i felt sooooooo happy. you know why? for two reasons.

1. so tkkrs will stop with the "he doesn't watch tae stuff because he won't be able to control his emotions that will shine through"

2. and the "he's contractually forbidden from mentioning tae's projects on live"

both stupid reasons, and both got debunked today. first of all, he's not contractually forbidden from mentioning a band member and the fact that this excuse even roamed about on twitter is nuts. and second of all, he reacted to taehyung exactly how i had expected him to. the same way he reacts to the other members (minus jimin), as in no glint, no spark, nothing from all the alleged "bottled emotions" tkkrs said would be leaking from his eyes.

i hope he reacts to more tae content, so a) yall know he didn't do it before just because he didn't want to, (and for it to be a constant reminder that he spent 90 minutes watching jimin videos under no one's request. while he watched winter bear because comments asked him to and will do so with every tae content he would watch in the future), and b) for yall to have visual proof of how he looks at taehyung compared to how he looks at jimin. since yall were SO sure he won't do it cause the love will show. well where is it? he won't spend 90 minutes watching tae content that's for sure cause as he had said before, he loses focus on things easily if he's not interested much. but whatever tae content he has watched so far (the butter MV clip, the winter bear MV) and will/might watch in the future will be telling enough about how much "love" (the romantic kind) he has for taehyung.

We care about all the private meals and trips that the guys have been on, which we only find out about months/years later.

Or that in the last 10 years we have shit tonne of moments that show how close they are, despite what the rest of the fandom says or what BH shows us.

Or that in last 12 months we've heard about them spending more time together from close friends and aquaintances, and yet JK didn't talk to the other members for weeks at a time, aside from group get togethers or Hobi's enlistment.

Oh BTW, was JK's parents at the concert last night being supportive of their son's 'Boyfriend'? Like they did for their own son the night before; the same concert that Tae's parents also attended yet their son wasn't there.

But you know what, you do you. And stop being SOOO insecure in your OWN ship, because someone who 💯believes in something doesn't need to go on to someone else's blog with an opposing viewpoint to help validate their beliefs...

tysm! someone kindly messaged me about it beforehand and let's just say i am not feeling well. going to use this ask as an excuse to talk about my thoughts on them because i have too many...!

spoilers below the cut!!

judging from the above shot this gif reads to me like he's waking up mahiru with the confetti. you know how towards the end of mahiru's t1 song she's fallen asleep? since she's wearing the birdcage outfit i image love you takes place right after that moment.

also i will just say that it's absolutely sickening if mahiru's boyfriend died on her birthday like honeyfizzley said. not only is that traumatizing but remember that one timeline conversation where, on mahiru's birthday, amane tells mahiru she'll die soon? if the lover's suicide theory is correct then like... that is the most gut-wrenching foreshadowing possible.

(on a lighter note, mahiru and i share the same birthday! you can probably imagine my reaction when i found that out, went to check her birthday timeline, and saw the convo with her and amane...)

the head tilt at the end is also very cute to me! i really really want to like mahiru's boyfriend. it's alot easier to hate him when he's scattered bird feathers but now that he has a face i can't bring myself to slander him.

speaking of his face, i really like his tareme eyes! i have a drafted post about it but droopy eyes in character design tends to signify the character is gentle personality. think haruka, kazui, or even mahiru herself! so, combined with my wishful hopes he's not a bad person, her boyfriend reads as a kind person to me.

another drafted post i had was about what eyes signify in milgram. the only proposal i've seen were that "eyes are the window to the soul" — it represents the prisoner's understanding/connection to the people around them. for instance, kazui feels disconnected from his wife but, for whatever reason, understands the bar lady more. or, for fuuta's case, everyone in dark triad lacks a face except rumerie who fuuta looks to for guidance in every battle.

so, like with shidou's family revealing their eyes, i think it's very interesting how now is the time mahiru's boyfriend reveals his face. if the above theory is correct—heavy emphasis on the if—then it means mahiru only felt connected with her boyfriend on the last day they were together as a couple.

this might be me being stupid but it kind-of looks like mahiru is limping here? like, compared to her boyfriend's full walk cycle, we're only seeing her left foot hop and a small bit of her other one.

i'm really, really curious on what happened between their happy celebration and how they ended up so wrecked. i initally assumed only mahiru was in disrepair because she was tearing through the forest looking for boyfriend. here they're both walking side-by-side.

also adding onto to my lover's suicide theory... neither of them have their shoes on. i don't like where this is going.

so sad that once again mahiru's earrings have been taken away from her. just let her have them...! i'm once again curious on what happened between the celebration and the forest because how does her earrings get knocked off? unless it was a car crash or something to mirror shidou's case (i hope not i hope not i hope not i hope i hope not.)

someone on twt mentioned that, comparing the gifs with infm, the thumbnail gif will take place in the middle of the mv. i have a feeling it'll be the reveal of her boyfriend's death maybe? possibly? same with inmf showing mu stab rei before cutting to her hatching from the chrysalis.

Thunderous Vibes ⛈️

Hi everyone, welcome to Yeaji's immaculate vibes for Friday! Since we've been talking about Stray Kids, it feels only right to usher in the weekend talking about my favorite title track of all time, "Thunderous".

To start, what a bold comeback right off the coattails of their win on Kingdom! After such immense success with "Back Door" and "God's Menu", "Thunderous" is just another notch in the long list of Stray Kids success.

But this isn't about the numbers (I leave that up to Suji) this is about the ~vibes~

So let's get into it!

First thing first, this is, in my opinion, the Stray Kids song where the choreo and the music and the MV just all fit so perfectly. (a hot take I know) There's this restrained power in the choreography, like the flash of lightning before the thunder hits. When the lightning is bright and you sit, just waiting, for the thunder to come crashing down.

That's what the choreography feels like! And the music video just adds to that imagery, with the flashing lightning and the sense that SKZ are the thunderous ones! They walk in with power and people move out of the way. They don't need to make any excuses or give any explanation, they simply are who they are.

At its core, "Thunderous" is a hype song. It never fails to hype me up and I can't help but dance along with the 'ptui ptui ptui' no matter where I am! I've been driving and it doesn't stop me.

I love the thunder noises in the lyrics and I always find myself shouting it at the top of my lungs. (BANG BANG BANG BOOM!!!)

It is a typical Stray Kids "noise music" but it's also understated in a way. Again, I go back to calling it restrained. The music is loud, there's car horns and loud drum hits, like don't get me wrong, but there are these moments of quiet, of subdued, and it almost feels threatening? Ominous? Predatory? That deep breath waiting for the thunder to hit?

It feels unapologetic. It feels raw and real and confident.

When I was a kid, and even now, I loved running out in thunderstorms. It was so much fun to be out in the pouring rain and to hear the thunder and see the lightshow in the sky. But once, my family got stuck in a thunderstorm that preceded a tornado warning. That thunder shook buildings and rattled windows. The rain was like a sheet of water thrashing against the windows.

Don't get me wrong, I still loved being in that thunderstorm. It was scary, but to be standing the presence of something that powerful. something that dangerous, was thrilling.

"Thunderous" is that feeling condensed into a song where YOU are the thunder. The impending storm.

And isn't that just a powerful feeling?

Or maybe Jimin didn't share the exact meanings of his songs because he didn't want to and it has nothing to do with not wanting to expose teenagers to something? Ever thought about that? Jimin is extremely private, we know that. He opened up to us through his music and gave us a hint of the backstory for every song. But if anyone expected him to go into detail just doesn't know him at all.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with keeping in mind that his audience also consists of minors. You would never hear swear words or talks about mature topics on family friendly tv shows either. Just because you and me are grown ups doesn't mean everyone is. And it's not like he makes his music kid friendly in general. He just decided to skip the MV parts that might not be appropriate for a younger audience. That was his choice and I personally think that's fine. Because in the end, if you want to see the make out scenes the MV is just one click away.

Yes, I know, he also stopped himself talking more about the meaning of Like Crazy and used minors watching as an excuse but I think Jimin still gave enough hints as to what the song means that adults most likely should catch on. And I really don't think he would've said anything else, even if minors watching wasn't a thing. Do you really think Jimin would sit there and talk about how he lost himself in alcohol to escape reality? Because I can't. That's just not him. And he definitely shouldn't change just because some people want him to become explicit.

Sometimes I feel like people are trying to find ways to criticise Jimin just for the sake of criticising him. Jimin is a very considerate person. He also tries to keep a clean image which, judging by the hate he's getting although he's nothing but kind snd sweet, I completely understand. It's not like he's completely avoiding the topic. He's drinking alcohol, we saw him drinking alcohol on camera before, is talking about alcohol, talked about tough times and how much the pandemic affected him. So why is it a bad thing if he doesn't want to do drunken lives or smoke?

All of BTS created an unhealthy parasocial relationship with the fans. But that's a whole other topic, in my opinion. I personally won't criticise Jimin for being aware of his fans not all being adults yet, the same way I won't criticise Jungkook for not considering it because in the end the parents are responsible to regulate what kids are watching and what not.

PSA: REGARDING VLV RELEASE

Hey everyone! Diamond Punk here! I wanted to give a PSA within the P!ATD fandom within Tumblr. It won’t too much of your time, I assure you.

Given the release of VLV, I wanted to remind everyone to please be respectful of those that enjoy the album and songs. I know that there’s been toxicity with the bandom since the accusations and the rise of people believing that Brendon made songs on said album to bash previous band mates (if you truly believe that; unfollow me. You’re not worth my time as you’re too busy giving hate towards Brendon for any reason you can grab your hands on) and use any reason to hate on him and his music.

In my personal opinion, I don’t believe it to ge true because if you do your research, you’d see that Brendon’s actually making a story within his songs (that also connects to his MVs) which refers to Maggie and whatever group she’s made. (I’ll speak more about that in another post)

Aside from that, it’s okay if you don’t like the new album or any of the songs. Your thoughts are valid but they don’t give you an excuse to be mean towards Brendon and those who DO like his songs. All that I am asking is for you guys to not be mean within the hashtags about the album or Brendon. Disagreement or constructive criticism is okay but if you’re hating on a song to hate Brendon, please keep the negativity to a minimum.

I know that there’s still a lot of people that hate Brendon for the fake accusations and honestly, if you don’t want to support him, that’s fine. Just don’t go spreading false info and overall negativity with the tags. (Ex: Claims of him, bashing on his bandmates, copycat accusations, and hating on him via songs from previous bandmates as evidence) There’s still people that still love and support him. We just want to have fun in the new era. Please respect that.

That being said, Keep the hashtags safe from as much toxicity as possible and to those that enjoy the new album and MV, WELCOME AND HAVE FUN GUYS!!!!
