Fun With Jump Arm Variations
When jumping, different skaters put their arms in different places, but generally they are pressed flat against the torso, especially on higher-revolution jumps. This compressed shape increases the skater’s rotational speed, which is important for attempting triples and quads.
But as anyone who has watched much skating has seen, you can jump with your arms in different positions, too. There are two main arm variations you will see in modern skating programs:
One arm above the head - these are nicknamed ‘tanos’ after Brian Boitano, who did not invent but did popularize the variation. Ones where the arm is bent a lot may be derisively nicknamed ‘helicopter tanos’, as some fans don’t like how they look. (Brian Boitano 1988 Olympics SP, Brian Orser 1988 Olympics SP, Petra Burka 1965 FS, Wendy Burge 1976 Olympics FS, Ekaterina Kurakova 2022 Euros FS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two arms above the head - these are nicknamed ‘rippons’ after Adam Rippon, who also did not invent them but popularized them when he started doing it on his lutz. (He did tanos on it for a while, but then started using both arms when he trained with Brian Orser, because he felt bad doing ‘tanos’ in front of Orser, who famously took silver behind Boitano at the Olympics.) (Adam Rippon 2016 GP France FS, Midori Ito 1988 Olympics SP, Ting Cui 2018 JGP Ostrava  SP, Sihyeong Lee 2021 Nebelhorn FS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, there are also other arm variations. These are all rare nowadays, although if you watch older programs, you are more likely to spot a variation that’s not a tano or rippon. Ones I’ve seen include:
Hands on hips - these used to be much more popular back in the day but have fallen out of fashion. I would guess it’s because they slow down rotational speed too much, as every one I have seen is a double except this one by Michael Chack, but I don’t know for sure. (Jill Trenary 1990 Worlds FS, Michael Chack 1992 USNats FS, Rory Flack 1988 USNats SP, Tonia Kwiatkowski 1988 USNats SP, Midori Ito 1987 Worlds SP, Anna Kondrashova 1988 Olympics SP, Yuzuru Hanyu 2010 JPNats FS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helicopter arms - this one has been used as a warm-up by Yuzuru Hanyu, and I’ve spotted it in competitions a couple of times with single and double jumps (Rory Flack 1994 US Open Artistic Program, Yuzuru Hanyu 2012 Finlandia Trophy SP warmup)
Tumblr media
Arms behind back - I’ve only seen this one performed by Jason Brown in his Riverdance program, where depending on the event he placed either one or both arms behind his back during the second jump of this combo (2013 SA FS, 2014 Nats FS)
Tumblr media
Arm switching midair - I’ve only seen this one in this lovely axel variation by John Curry (1976 Olympic SP)
Tumblr media
Hands by the head - I believe I may have seen this used by at least one other skater, but the only example I have at hand is this one by Nancy Kerrigan (1990 Goodwill Games SP)
Tumblr media
Beginning in 2009, ‘varied position in the air’ became a positive GOE bullet point for jumps. This was because they are supposed to add to the difficulty of a jump, although I’ve seen arguments back and forth from skaters about how true that is for some arm positions (and even if which arm is raised makes a difference for tanos). Years later, they exploded in popularity, particularly in the women’s competition. The trend had its beginning around 2014 or so; the previous season, junior World medalists Evgenia Medvedeva and Serafima Sakhanovich were given programs constructed to include raised arms on a couple of jumps, which wasn’t too unusual, but in 2014, their programs contained many more of them. Medvedeva would go on to dominate the senior circuit for several years and notably used raised arms on most of her jumps during that time, which started the trend in earnest among other skaters.
This GOE bullet point was removed for the 2018-2019 season. But if arm variations no longer get that bit of GOE, why do we still see them so often? There are probably a few reasons:
Skaters who trained them for GOE a few years ago got used to doing them that way and don’t want to mess with their muscle memory
They can add to a program aesthetically
Skaters and their teams may still hope to impress the judges by using them
Skaters have said that rippons help straighten their jump axis
I’ve also seen speculation that rippons can be used to help muscle jumps using the upper body in some cases
I would also like to shout out arm variations on jump exits that aren’t the standard check-out position. These aren’t as common as mid-air variations nowadays and rarely get talked about as their own thing - probably in part because they were never a GOE bullet - but they can add difficulty to the exit as well as give a nice choreographic touch to a program. You can see a few in the above gifs, but here’s a few more:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Petra Burka 1965 Worlds FS, Yuzuru Hanyu 2021 “White Nights” EX, Anett Pötzsch 1976 Olympics FS, Hana Mašková 1968 Worlds FS, Claudia Kristofics-Binder 1976 Olympics FS, Brian Boitano 1988 Olympics SP, Vladimir Kovalyov 1976 Olympics SP)

Please tell us what happened with Heseltine and the parlimentary mace?
oh it's a great story! for those who might not know - the mace represents the king's authority in parliament and without it parliament can't meet or pass laws - and this tradition goes back to the 13th century.
the heseltine incident happened in 1976 when the labour party were in power but with a laughably small majority (319/635 seats), and a couple of months after their leader/the PM harold wilson resigned. i'll just paste an article from the time here because i think this describes the events better than i ever could:
Against an unprecedented background of fisticuffs, the singing of the Red Flag and a Conservative attempt to run away with the mace, the Government sneaked home to an unprecedented victory of one vote in its battle to overrule an attempt to destroy its nationalisation plans for the shipbuilding industry. Nothing like it has been seen in the Commons chamber for more than 40 years. As soon as the whips announced that a Government majority had been achieved by 304 votes to 303, Labour MPs stood up and began to sing The Red Flag. As they reached the words "We'll keep the red flag flying here," Mr Michael Heseltine, Tory spokesman at the conclusion of the debate, jumped up and seized the mace from its rack beneath the Speaker's Chair. As he waved it aggressively towards the Labour Benches, his Shadow Cabinet colleague Mr James Prior wrested it from his hands and replaced it in its rack the wrong way round. While Mr Prior was changing ends, so to speak, a fracas developed in front of the Tory front bench. Mr Geoffrey Rippon, a former Tory Minister, seemed to be in full physical conflict with Mr Dennis Canavan, Labour MP for Stirlingshire West. Mr Canavan was pulled away by Mr Peter Snape, a Labour Whip. But as the altercation turned into something very like a brawl in the middle of the floor of the Commons, Deputy Speaker, Sir Myer Galpern, rose and declared: "The House is suspended for 20 minutes."
bonus:
Normally such a move would have ended the disturbance. But within a matter of moments, as MPs were moving out of the chamber, yet another outbreak of scuffling took place. Mr Tom Swain, a miners' MP from Derbyshire, was seen to be fighting with a Tory member, Mr Michael Spicer, (Worcestershire South).
it's almost comforting reading this because it makes me feel less alarmed at the sorts of scenes you see in parliament today. but that same thought also makes me feel very depressed. swings and roundabouts.

Four Continents 2023: Men’s FS
okay i made it !!
work’s been a complete bitch this week but glad I finally got to tune in for this :^)
came in the middle of group 2 -
Sihyeong Lee (KOR)
so many rippon arms...like damn
such a good fight!! i really do like this program on him
korean skating is onward and upward man...i’m so excited for this whole team
Liam Kapeikis (USA)
ah yes moulin rouge the warhorse...it has so much of a reputation that there’s so much pressure to deliver a good program for it...
had some bobbles and bad jumps...and then started getting it back together
also kinda suffers from windmill arms...
so many falls T-T my guy, your time will come
Mikhail Shaidorov (KAZ)
literally have never watched mikhail ever, so interested to see how this goes
good technical foundation as far as i can see, nice flow on his jumps
def was struggling stamina wise at the step sequence towards the end...colorado really is unforgiving with the altitude difference
Stephen Gogolev (CAN)
i feel like i saw his spartacus program at the very beginning of the season, so curious to see how it’s evolved
not the 2S... and the other 2S... :’)
ignoring the double sals...a solid showing!! it just sucks that he literally gets no points for those :|
Koshiro Shimada (JPN)
not my fave program of his (imo nobody does chaplin like javi), but oh well
he’s really zipping around the ice today - his lines are always sooo nice
the 2a jump sequence... man that was a lofty one and he still had enough momentum to do an euler and a triple sal after???
def still waiting on him to grow his performance/presence more in the next few seasons...this wasn’t technically his best or worst performance, but adding just a bit more Energy to it makes such a difference
Jaeseok Kyeong (KOR)
first time watching him - his outfit is giving me cute stylish bookworm vibes
wish he’d extend his lines all the way through his hands - they’re really pretty and then it stops at his wrist
good recovery after the fall on the opening 3A. he’s also pretty speedy
the music shift is fun !!
i’m obsessed, this whole program was so fun, and you felt the energy in the first 20s even though he completely bombed the first jump
Maxim Naumov (USA)
i’ve also never watched maxim ever so this will be new for me
the music is called “iron, shadows, loyal” is this a fantasy soundtrack cut or have i been living under a rock
rough start with several hard falls :(
what is with the men and 2_1Eu3_ sequences tonight
i like this music cut though...(feels like he’s trying to follow in jimmy’s stylistic footsteps) but tonight’s performance was stressful
what can i say, i love men who can perform and have terrible jump consistency
Conrad Orzel (CAN)
it’s been eons since i last watched conrad...
ohhh “paint it black” ??? just wish he had a more interesting all black outfit
solid perf technically, hoping he is able to give it more oomph by the time worlds rolls around (assuming he is sent to worlds)
Shun Sato (JPN)
(oh my god i swear i typed shun’s thing and then it didn’t save smh)
his jumps are so soft and precise !! so smooth
can’t wait for him to grow a bit more in the next few seasons and become a total Show Stopper
Junhwan Cha (KOR)
junhwan pls medal PLS
that opening jump on the james bond theme...man oh man
noooo he tapped the boards when he fell
the fuckin popped 2A...chaotic
this is such a great james bond music cut, but alas this was not his best showing
Boyang Jin (CHN)
i honestly feel like i haven’t seen boyang since olys...which were a full year ago...
it’s so weird to me that nathan and shoma aren’t at this comp with him...there was an era where the three of them were everywhere
this is soft and unsnoozy music, aka perfect
not his best skate, but so good to see him out here !! can’t wait to see this program when he’s in better shape and not competing a mile high
Jimmy Ma (USA)
jimmy getting 3rd in the SP was not something i was expecting...but let’s gooo
clair de lune is a very Normal choice...and then it cuts to the EDM music we expect from him (always can rely on jimmy to bring us to the club)
there were some chaos pops (1A...lol) but he seems happy with it overall !!
3rd in the sp to 11th in the fs to 7th overall...yup the chaos of the men’s event
Keegan Messing (CAN)
the world’s favorite, father of two - i’m emo over him giving jimmy a hug as they pass each other on the ice
i’ve seen this program so much this year, and it’s a packaging that would be cheesy for anyone else, but it works SO well for him
two clean 4Ts and 3As?? he’s on FIRE
that’s it, 4CC is over, give him the gold (i’m sorry kao, it literally doesn’t matter how well you do. keegan deserves first in my heart)
Kao Miura (JPN)
kao literally wasn’t on my radar until i saw him this season during the grand prix series...and MAN oh MAN when he’s on, he’s ON
when he ups his performance energy, it will be the end of me
his jumps rotate so evenly (idt that makes sense, but it makes sense to me)
really milking the chorus of this song...hell yeah !!
wow. what an event !!

the "rippon" triple lutz: although not the first skater to perform a jump with two hands over his head, adam rippon (USA) is credited with popularizing the move since first performing it in competition in 2009. arm variations such as the rippon and the tano can increase the grade of execution of a jump.

⛸️❄️FIGURE SKATER NICO HELL YEAH BITCHES❄️⛸️
He started at the age of four. So Maria had once taken Nico and Bianca on a trip to this place and near the hotel where they where staying there was frozen pond and people were allowed to skate on it. So teeny tiny Nico with his teeny tiny boots was having the time of his life on that pond. He was having so much fun and he caught the gist of it so quickly. He fell down, giggled, got up and fell down again. Maria was watching him and she smiled looking at her son and so when they went back, Maria signed him up for lessons, thinking that Nico would enjoy them.
He's got black skates, with like sorta pointy toes and literal gold blades (Victor and Johnny stans I see you). The blades are Imperial Gold and they were a gift from Reyna.
He does all of his jumps with his hands over his head,(the rippon variation, named after one of our favorite figure skating gays, Adam Rippon). So Rippons look like this:
Tumblr media
Anyway that's Alina and she does Rippons on almost every jump she does. So that's what Nico does. They used to be really uncommon before the 2018 Olympics (after that everybody and their mamas were doing Rippons because-)
So Nico uses Rippons a lot.
He's got a signature combination and that's the quad lutz-triple loop.
His spins oh god he's one flexible boi, he's an amazing spinner and the speed of them is like mind-blowing, like so he does the hyperextened Biellman and that one that Kamila does:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's so artistic, his PCS are always so high, it's as if he lays everything bare on the ice, his performances are enough to make people cry.
He's won a lot of competitions, so he won the Junior Worlds and the Junior Grand Prix Final, he was pretty much undefeated in his junior season. I'm still thinking about his senior career and I'm pretty sure it's gonna resemble Yuna Kim's except I won't let it end tragically like her's did (fuck u isu fuck u)
Okay so he's coached by a dead coach. Yep. During the Battle of the Labyrinth he'd got a zombie coach, who was really famous(like Tatiana Tarasova) when he was like, alive and so he was the one teaching Nico and jumps and spins.
His costumes are always amazing, he sometimes helps with the brainstorming process but like yes he's one well-dressed bish.
Taking inspiration from Yuna Kim and Aleksandra and Dmitrii, his most iconic program will be a James Bond themed free skate. Idk Nico and James Bond seems like an amazing combination.
There is a lake near camp and so Mr D freezes it during the summer so that he can train in camp, (because Mr D loves him and doesn't want him far away from camp)
Will accompanies him, almost always and Will's always like "How can you jump like that?" and Nico just smirks and does like a quad Lutz with five loop combos and Will's like quit showing off bish.
Nico loves to skate, he just feels free when he skates, he loves how fast and athletic it is while also being beautiful as fuck.
Nico does ballet because like literally every figure skater has trained in ballet at some point in there life and guess what, he's really good at that too.
Hades loves watching Nico while he competes, he literally watches every competition Nico competes in. Persephone too.
He's pretty famous, basically imagine the Winnie showers when Yuzu finishes, just change the Poohs with stuffed Koala bears.
Will wasn't that good at skating but after he started accompanying Nico, Nico taught him to skate too, so find them vibin and laughing on the ice, trying out like pairs lifts and stuff.
Will travels with him to competitions and stuff and sometimes it's Reyna.
Will has read so many articles about figure skaters coming down with anorexia and other eating disorders and thus being forced to retire and it absolutely terrifies him that something like that could happen to Nico. So he's always seeing whether or not Nico's having his meals on time or not and if he's healthy or not(and not starving like a certain coach forces her skaters to-)
I guess that's it! I'm a huge figure skating fan, I follow this sport....obsessively so like this was so much fun for me, I hope y'all liked this.

hey i'm new to figure skating, why is everyone mad about mariah bell?
It's a long story.... a couple years back (might've been around 2 or 3?) Mariah and Eunsoo Lim skated at the same place together. Then rumors started circulating that Mariah had been harassing Eunsoo and Raf did nothing about it.
At a comp later that year Mariah cut Eunsoo's leg in a move where people said Mariah did nothing wrong however Eunsoo was clearly up against the boards and Mariah did get too close and could've figured out a way to make sure she didn't cut Eunsoo extending on a spiral or something like that.
Since then she has played the victim and been so fake nice taking a page from Adam Rippon who is coincidently her coach now.
Also at the Olympics there was a video circulating of her totally talking shit about one of the other female skaters with some other people (I can't remember who it was, maybe Kami?) which was totally inappropriate and inexcusable as the skater was literally warming up in the like gym area only like maybe 10 feet away?
She also can't rotate a triple jump to save her life and can't jump a 3+3 fully rotated or even just in general. Her scores are gifted to her because she's with Adam and cause she's the "all american white girl" that everyone eats up cause she's so "kind" and "sweet"

Ladies SP analysis - Top 2 - Worlds 2021
Disclaimer: this is not completely objective. Some of the statements made here are my opinions, and this is obviously my personal perspective on these programs, yours may differ.
1. Anna Shcherbakova - Ô doux printemps d'autrefois - 81.00
Tumblr media
The beginning is okay but there's not much to say about it. Spiral into rippon 2A, which is , and then transitions into 3F. Her picking technique in the flip is flawed, and there's not a huge amount of height, so I'd say the GOE of 1.97 is higher than I would expect. Next is the change foot combo spin - it's lovely, good speed and nice positions. Some choreo, and then the combo, 3Lz+3Lo. Upon closer examination (which wasn't easy, give me a better angle, bastards) the edge on the Lutz doesn't seem to be egregiously wrong (my call would perhaps be !) but regardless the takeoff is not good. Camel spin, which works beautifully with the music, then step sequence with a small stumble, ending with a Biellmann.
The TES seems high, especially since Shcherbakova lacks a 3A. I would take off GOE points on the flip, Lutz, and StSq.
Overall the program was nice. Plenty of fairly difficult transitions, and the music interpreted well. However, skating skills here are not super outstanding, and in general the program components are not enough to merit 37.14 in PCS.
81 is too high for this program. Nevertheless, a job well done to Anna for her performance today.
2. Rika Kihira - The Fire Within - 79.08
Tumblr media
Excellent speed leading into the first jump, then 3A and a catchfoot spiral to exit. The 'q' on the 3A from the TP is a bit dubious, though under close scrutiny it seems to be fair. High kick to transition into 3F+3T, the toe also a quarter underrotated. Next is a flying camel spin, good speed, centered, lovely positions. Some choreography follows, then she builds up speed and goes into a picture-perfect rippon 3Lz. Beautiful transitions out, then a Biellmann spin with excellent speed, then cartwheel to transition into the step sequence. The StSq is incredible - so much ice coverage, the fan spiral that fits that moment in the music so wonderfully, and her physical involvement with the music is simply amazing. Change foot combo spin to end.
Most of the elements are of excellent quality, so I'd argue the GOE is lowballed a little and the TES should have been a tad higher.
This program is a joy to watch. The costume and choreography are so unique, and the performance given today was so powerful. With the high quality transitions and interpretation, combined with such an original concept for this program, the PCS of 35.40 looks to be underscored as well, and especially so when compared to Shcherbakova's 37.
To state the obvious, she was robbed. On the bright side, this was an incredible program from Rika.
Looking forward to the free!

Wakaba was so fun, the music in the middle was a bit choppy but her smile! Once king of pride rock really kicked in after her last jump in that step sequence made me tear up ngl the olympic spirit of it all got to me
Sasha's rippon jumps are just insane, her artistry is still heavily lacking but the gasp when her score was announced was absolutely well deserved. The difficulty of that program is bonkers.
Really hope she lasts in the sport so we can see her develop.
Sakomoto's music was garbage holy shit but she was so nice to watch with a clean skate. She doesn't have quads or a 3a but she does her thing beautifully. I liked her gladiator short program much better
Anna was beautiful but whoever did the music should be unalived what was that?? Why would you chop 3 pieces together holy shit
i also was surprised she kept her arms down for half the jumps, she didn't need the extra difficulty but i'm so used to that from the russians by now. Wonderful clean skate tho, i think only one or two elements weren't green i mean damn. She really kept the mix of technical jumps and artistic elegance from her first season what a joy.
For kamila I just don't know what to say, what a poor girl. I would complain about using bolero if that had been the worst part

friendly reminder that miss rika kihira not only has a textbook lutz but also a textbook flip, no excessive prerotation on any jumps, clean picking technique, a nice euler that doesnt look like a step-out, a gorgeous triple axel, good tanos and rippons, and combos with great rhythm. who's doing it like her

Impressions from the rink - IDF - Men's SP part II
I enjoyed Frangipani's SP a lot. One of Richaud's better works this season. Frangipani was all over the place but the program has potential imho. Also he had a horrible six minutes warm-up. Nothing worked, the 4S, the 3A, the combo. Fell a lot. He gave the impression that he was fighting against the ice during the whole SP but got there in the end.
Aliev's skating is better irl. It's really really smooth. Program is forgettable and I hate his shirt with the gloves attached. Makes his arms way to him and out of proportion wrt to the rest of his body.
Artur Danielian otoh is a treat to watch. Outstanding posture, good musicality and he skates big. He really fills the rink. Yeah he's doing rippons on all his jumps but it's really effective and nice to watch. He only he landed his jums he could verybwell become the next leading Russian man. Music for the SP is trash. Should have gotten higher PCS than Adam Siao Him Fa but homescoring will do that for you.
Speaking of Adam. Skating skills are not great, his crossovers are loud, you can really here the scratching sounds. Spins not great. But so much energy in that SP. He honestly set the rink on fire. Also his 4T has a great height, and the combo looked smooth enough. All in all a great crowdpleaser. Second best performance of the day after Vasiljevs.
Keegan during the warm-up looked great. I watched him practice footwork along the boards and it was beautiful to watch. His SP was disappointing tho. I expected him to be faster. He certainly wasn't faster than Yuma. Also he gave a pretty muted performance. He looked like he was kinda winging it and making it up as he went. His program was noticeably empty especially compared to the other guys in his group. Spins went out of control... Just messy all around (see what I did there?)
