It was easy some days to have tunnel vision when it came to studying. Not only did you like getting good grades, you actually enjoyed keeping your mind active. It was fun to learn. Bucky liked to remind you that taking breaks was also a good way to care for your mind, along with your body.
When he brought it up earlier today, you argued that you had to finish your practice test before you could rest.
Bucky took it as a challenge.
You tapped your pen against your notebook as you reviewed your last question once more. Typing was quicker and more convenient, but writing by hand was better for your memory. Always had been, which was likely another reason you liked putting puzzles together. It was easier for you to visualize the words and pictures you put to practice than the endless drone of the keyboard.
Now, thanks to Bucky, you would have an extremely vivid image to reflect on.
"Mmm. Speak up, Smartie. I didn't catch that," Bucky spoke from under the desk. "Last one. C'mon. You got this."
Your legs were spread as much as possible as his fingers held your glistening lips open for his greedy tongue. How the hell is he still down there? He can't be comfortable. Your boyfriend's massive frame, one way or another, fit somehow as he lazily teased your throbbing hole. And if the space bothered him, he didn't voice his complaint.
"I told you, Stud," you whined, repeating your answer a bit louder.
Bucky was nothing short of brilliant. He knew the answers to each of your questions and suggested that you read each one out loud as you went through your sheet. For each one you got right, the closer he brought you to the edge. If you got it wrong, he stopped until you "redeemed" yourself.
Perfect score, Stud. Should be proud.
"That's my girl," he praised, pressing a kiss to your swollen clit before he sucked it between his lips.
The pen hit the paper as you lost your concentration, his hand slowly gliding up your torso. He avoided reaching under your bra and it frustrated you that your clothes were still on. You wanted your aching nipples to be lavished by his fingers and tongue. Maybe he would fuck you on your desk if you asked politely.
And by asking politely, I'll just lift my skirt and bend over.
"My beautiful, smart, good, wet girl," he went on, pulling a whimper from you as your head fell back. The chair beneath you had to be drenched. He knew what his praise did to you. "Gonna ace that test. I know you will. Before you do, I need to give my pretty pussy a reward."
How many orgasms will he give me when he sees my GPA at the end of the semester?
You began to rock your hips as his tongue dipped back between your slick folds, his groan loud.against your wet warmth as you twisted your fingers in his hair. Your mouth fell open as you panted, grinding against his face as best you could.
"Fuck! Stud. Bucky. There. Please!"
Two fingers pushed in, fluidly moving deep as you arched your back. Oh, he was going to fuck you after this. You knew by the way his fingers spread inside you that he wanted you stretched and ready. The breathy whine you let out spurred him on as his lips wrapped around your clit once more.
"Come for me. Let me have it."
The strength of your orgasm took you by surprise, your cry embarrassingly loud as you catapulted over the edge. Bucky kept you in place, letting you ride out the overwhelming sensations as he lapped you up with a slight growl. Tears sprang to your eyes as your thighs lightly shook and it took you a few seconds to realize that he had pushed your chair back.
"Hey," you heard as you blinked, Bucky's blue eyes filled with a mix of lust and tenderness as he framed your face. You didn't see him crawl out from under your desk. "You okay, doll?"
He was still on his knees as you took in the sight of him. His long hair was messy thanks to your fingers, his lips shining and wet. You fell forward, pressing your mouth against his. Wrapping your arms around him, you let yourself melt into him. The way he always allowed you to.
"Perfect," you whispered, waiting for your heart rate to return to normal. "Thanks."
"For the study help or orgasm?" he smirked, kissing the tip of your nose.
For everything.
"Both," you smiled, pulling back so you could glance down at the hard-on in his sweatpants. "Need some help with that?"
He glanced down, too, with a grin, making your heart race all over again. "I wouldn't mind."
You guided your hand to the front of his pants with a wide smile. "And you're right. I'm going to ace my test."
You would continue to make him proud by doing well.
And Bucky already had something special planned for the two of you once the semester came to an end.
"That's my girl."
*****
Hmm. I wonder what he has planned! More to come soon. Love and thanks! ❤️

https://merakiui.tumblr.com/post/702097455125299200/you-think-twst-mobs-ships-their-respective
I can see savanaclaw mobs and pomefiore mobs getting into a ship war like their life depended on it. Pomefiore mobs called savanaclaw mobs Leona x Mc/yuu ship as toxic ship and savanaclaw mobs reminded them that their dorm leader also tried to kill Mc/yuu once
And i agree with one of the comment. Ignihyde mobs will helps idia cyber stalking his crush.
Heartslabyul mobs or octavinelle mobs accidentaly sends their fanfic to the dorm leaders (they planned to send the link to their shipper friends)
Riddle punishes those who send such foolish fiction to him, but he secretly keeps all of it and reads it before bed in hopes that he might dream of these exact scenarios. The more explicit writings have yet to be perused, but he certainly wishes to set aside time for a review of them.
Azul thought these files would have more value and they most certainly do. For once he's actually pleased to read something that isn't dirt on the next student or a list of students to watch out for when making deals. Like Riddle, Azul also delights in privately reading the fanfics he was sent. He claims it's not a huge issue when the mobs come to him with their heads hung in shame, humiliated to have accidentally sent the wrong files to their dorm leader. Azul waves it off dismissively, but the minute they're out of his sight he grows flustered and retreats to his VIP room.
Leona doesn't understand what all the fuss is about. His guys have been more restless and agitated than usual. When Vil tells him to keep his students in check, he has no idea what the Pomefiore Housewarden is referring to. If it's about roughhousing, that's just how things work in Savanaclaw, but he knows his guys aren't foolish enough to engage in fights on someone else's territory. When he finds out the true cause for their agitation is some silly 'shipping war' he can only sigh in disappointment. Of all the things to bicker over and it's about some pairing... Leona claims he doesn't care, but he's still going to keep his ears open if he catches any of the guys discussing it. And Ruggie will provide him with any new gossip regarding the matter as well.
Kalim truly doesn't mind it. In fact, he probably had no idea his students were writing stories about him and you. He's flattered when he finds out and even suggests holding a party to commemorate creative fiction! He wants to try his hand at writing this marvelous thing called fanfiction, so he'll write something about you and Jamil! It'll be lots of fun!
Vil isn't surprised to learn about this shipping war. Celebrities are no strangers to fanfiction and ships. He knows there exists plenty of Vil x Reader fanfiction and it doesn't bother him one bit. Writing is an art, so he's pleased that he can act as a muse for so many people. The Vil x Neige fanfiction irks him, though. Vil usually doesn't acknowledge useless shipping wars. They can spiral out of control fast and it would only add more fuel to the fire if he addressed it. But walking out of the Housewarden meeting, he passes Leona and offers him a satisfied smile. "It appears I'm the most favored match. Who would have thought you'd take second place yet again."
Idia is over the moon when he's sent a file with all of your data and facts written in startling detail. It's all encrypted for privacy reasons. Idia actually encourages his students to look into any and all information they can dig up on you. His students are just happy to be part of this digital scavenger hunt and this is also the happiest they've ever seen their Housewarden. Their cyberstalking efforts soon become dangerous because now they treat you as if you're an idol. They pass on information of where you were last seen, who you were with, and where you're going next. In the meantime, Idia compiles all of this information into a program to create a simulated version of you. He has to practice on this dating sim he coded before he can even think to approach you!
Malleus was unaware that any of his students did that in their spare time. The mobs probably never tell him about it because they're worried he might find it offensive, but Lilia knows. And when he finds out the students are writing delightful stories regarding you and Malleus he wants in as well. He'll offer to act as a beta reader if any of the students are bold enough to share with him. When Malleus learns of this, he's quite perplexed. This 'fanfiction' is about him? And you're in it as well? His curiosity has been piqued.

I already left a massive paragraph on ao3 about how I feel about that last chapter but I thought I’d come on here and do the same.
I feel as if I’m running out of words on how enchanting, mind blowing and damn right beautiful this story is (even with the amount of angst and crying I’ve done on this series 😂) this series is one rare gem in a sea of rocks. Where everything just comes together, where nothing feels forced. While I know that this series is just a rewritten version of ‘The Originals’ the way you have given this series life, given it more depth is just mind blowing to me. Without even going into klaroline and how that is just in a field of its own the way you have given Klaus, Elijah, Marcel and even Camille more character, more growth is just… beautiful to read.
I can’t talk about klaroline without getting sappy over how you’ve written them. They are soulmates and deserve their happy ending together. Their love is just written beautifully in this series. I literally hear their voices through your writing because you’ve done such an excellent job in keeping the core of who they were from the show and bringing it into your own world!
I can’t count how many times I’ve re-read this series back to back because I never want to leave this universe, to leave these characters.
While I’m excited to begin this new season, to be a part of these characters lives for longer I’m also emotional over the fact that, hopefully for you 😂, we will possibly say goodbye to them before the end of this year (and I am not prepared for that)
I can’t wait to see your growth this year in your writing (don’t know how it can be any better than it already is mind you!) you should be immensely proud of this series and what you’ve accomplished.
Can’t wait to see that notification for the next chapter, be it 2 weeks, 2 months or a year! ❤️
(So sorry for the emotional spillage 😂😂😂)
(Also need the klaroline wedding asap. Please give us a wedding your honour!)
Tumblr media
I hope you're proud of yourself, because you just made me cry 😭😭😭 Hoooow are you so nice??? I want to print this out and put it on my wall for when I'm feeling like crap and can't write. 🥹
This is so kind and so nice of you, I don't even know what to say. I don't know how to take a compliment tbh, but I'm really emotional. I've read this at least three times already. 🥹 Thank you so much for saying all that. ❤️ There have been sooooo many times throughout the years where I questioned the point of writing this, and each and every time I had someone tell me they were finally enjoying The Originals or liking characters they had previously hated, I felt a little bit more at peace ❤️
The response to this chapter has been so nice, everyone has been so lovely about it and so kind to take time to write some awesome reviews and then this. 🥲 I don't know, man, I just don't know. I don't know what I've done to deserve such awesome readers who make me feel like I'm not screaming into the void after all these years, but thank you very, very much! 🥹 Thank you so, so much for this. You have made my entire week. 😭

ofmd fans! you might like amazon prime's "a league of their own"
!!! MASSIVE DISCLAIMER BEFORE I GO ON !!!: our flag means death is often described as a lighthearted show. homophobia isn't really a big theme. this is very different from a league of their own, since it's about the experiences of queer women and queer woc in the 1940s. there's quite a bit of homophobia, transphobia, and racism shown on screen, much more than our flag means death.
i'm making this post because i'm tired of lesbians and other sapphics having to watch show after show get cancelled. currently, a league of their own (which is based on a movie from the 90s) is getting bombed with negative reviews because of homophobes saying that they made it woke. so, please, i ask that you read below the cut because this could be another new favorite show for you, and we need the views and positive reviews to keep it afloat.
the reason i'm targeting this post towards fans of ofmd is because as i was watching the first episode of aloto, i kept thinking of it.
it starts with carson shaw (played by abbi jacobson), a married woman, running from home to become a professional baseball player. when she arrives at tryouts, she meets greta gill (played by d'arcy carden, who i'm sure most of you know as janet from the good place). now, without spoiling much i'll tell you; they are very explicitly gay. VERY.
at tryouts, they cross paths with max chapman (played by chante adams), who isn't even considered for the team despite her amazing pitch just because she's black. despite the setback, she's determined to make her dream of playing ball work no matter what anyone says or does to try to stop her.
the show follows both the women's baseball team and max. max has such a beautiful story of self-discovery alongside trying to achieve her dream. carson also has her own story of self-discovery with greta.
there are also 3 butches in the main cast (which i've seen many people excited about) and latinas (including a cuban girl that only speaks spanish, which made me happy as a cuban-american ex-softball player!!!)
oh, and there's also a trans man!
amazon prime marketed this show as if it was just about the baseball, when it was actually a show about the queer experience in the 1940s. reminds me of how, going into our flag means death, we thought it was a silly pirate comedy because HBO never promoted it as a romcom.
please consider watching it. if you're hesitant, watch the first episode and i promise it'll have you hooked. we need this representation. we need more seasons. for me personally, this show is extremely important to me. it's my first time seeing myself on screen and actually feeling like i'm understood as a lesbian. i'm really picky with how couples are written, and they feel so natural. max's experience also hit me so hard, so i can't even begin to imagine what it would be like for a black lesbian to see.
i know it might seem silly to make this post and ask for people to give this show a chance, but i don't think i can handle seeing it go early. and lesbians have been losing shows left and right ya know. and we all know the ofmd fandom is massive (rightfully so). plus, i think you'll be happy to see a show centered on women.
please do keep in mind what i said in the disclaimer though. this show focuses in on homophobia often. don't watch if you can't handle it. always prioritize your mental health.

Is Getting A Literary Agent Risky?
Tumblr media
You’ve completed your manuscript and you want to publish your book but you don’t know the process. Research is resourceful but it’s not effective if you don’t know what to look for.
There is a plethora of publishing houses to contact and seeing that makes your mind spin. You’ll also see links to literary agents with click baits “we’ll make your book a best seller guaranteed.” You click and you’re engulfed with promises and reviews that you can’t substantiate are legit. The urge to hire an agent is strong because your gut screams that in your hands you hold a book you believe will be a best seller. First time authors tend to see the positive hype of agents promising to make you a best-selling author, but before you decide to hire an agent, you must research further his or her resume to know if they can do what is promised.
Not everything you read is legit. Independent agents are not always truthful with their professional resume. Their website maybe designed sharply with photos of popular books, authors, and testimonies to validate the agent’s expertise. Looks too good to be true, right?
The Association of Literary Agents is a good source to reference for legit agents. They provide names and bios of recommended agents for you to contact if you decide to go that route. Another resource is the Seymour Agency to find an agent that is suitable for your publishing needs. But for independent agents, you can go onto the author’s website to legitimize the agent; also, social media will have authors to advise agents if they used one. Not all independent agents are scammers, but unfortunately, the bad ones make it harder for good agents to obtain work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keep in mind that agents will require a contract to hire them. Some require payment upfront and they will all take a percentage of your royalties. All will request to read your manuscript before they decide to work for you, some may even advise you to make changes to make your story impactful to an audience in the genre you’ve written. But if one should ask you to send them your original manuscript, don’t do it. Send them a watermarked copy. There are many horror stories about agents that deceive new authors by taking payments, taking manuscripts and disappearing for an extended period of time - forever. It’s a blow to the gut when you realize that you’ve been duped and your manuscript is forever lost. (Please, always have copies of your story and never, I mean never, send an original.)
If you can afford to hire a literary agent, by all means, do it. If finances have you strapped, know there are more cost effective ways to get your book read, but you just need to apply effort to market yourself. Though the process maybe stressful, it’s a learning experience altogether that helps you grow as an author.
Until next time… happy writing.

Bookshelf wrapped
A list of books I've read in 2023 for statistical and archival purposes and also because I like to catalog things (and tumblr let me down by not having a year in review this year).
If any of my followers would feel inspired to do a similar thing please tag me, I'd love to see what you've read!
Służące do wszystkiego, Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak. I love reading the first-hands accounts of history, esp from regular/lower class people. So it's worth to read just for it. There was something lacking for it to be a really good reportage tbh.
Fire and Blood, George R.R. Martin. Really nice if you're an asoiafhead. Can't really recommend to someone who hadn't read asoiaf before. Also I wish GRRM would focus on finishing the saga instead of starting new projects. But can't really blame him for pursuing side stories.
Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer. Keep thinking about that redditor guy who said this book inspired him to try and prepare to climb Mount Everest in one year. Maybe reddit pisses on poor even more than tumblr.
Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert. I must say that of (5) Dune books I've read so far, this has the higher amount of what I consider Dune's fatal flaws. Mostly unnecessarily convoluted dialogues that end up being borderline incomprehensible. It also underutilizes very interesting characters, like Scytale and Mohiam. I would give extra points for Paul's ending, but then I've read Children of Dune.
The True Deceiver, Tove Jansson. Just fine. Even better if you like winter.
Children of Dune, Frank Herbert. Way better than Messiah, can't hold a candle to the original Dune. I feel like some stuff was retconned in this part, concerning Alia's and the twins' abilities. Esp. Alia's arc could use more foundation set in the previous parts.
God-Emperor of Dune, Frank Herbert. Still not as good as the original Dune, but what a beautiful wild ride. So many cool ideas and characters, including the answer to the question 'would you love me if I were a worm', Idk why the people say it's not adaptable to the screen, I know exactly how I would direct the movie. I wasn't born a nepo baby so you will probably never see this, sadly.
Uncle Vanya, Anton Chekhov. I saw a really good performance before reading the play so it probably influenced my rating. Good read for ugly girls who pull no bitches.
The Last Question, Isaac Asimov. Clever.
Girl, interrupted, Susanna Kaysen. Good read for mentally ill and probably ugly girls.
Other voices, other rooms, Truman Capote. Loved how the climate was painted, and I'd say the way it was written, but I've read the translation. So I liked the translator's way with words I guess.
Dracula, Bram Stoker. Jonathan's diary at the beginning is crazy, scary and overall amazing, but sadly it's the highest point of the novel and the rest doesn't live up to the hype. It's still good and it nice to compare how some motives evolved in the popculture.
Chłopki. Opowieść o naszych babkach, Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak. Again, I absolutely loved the primary sources used in this book. And it's in fact rare to see some memoirs by the women of the lowest of low classes. But other then the sources, Idk.
Heretics of Dune, Frank Herbert. The issues of Messiah are back. Can we let go of Duncan at last. Honored Matres as a concept are questionable/laughable. I wanted to ask on Dune subreddit if anyone else thinks Teg and Patrin were gay for each other but they removed my ask, so I'm just gonna believe this on my own.
The Crucible, Arthur Miller. Very good. I have some issues with the character of Abigail and how she compares to the historical Abigail though.
Things fall apart, Chinua Achebe. Crazy good. I kept changing my mind on what I like the most about the book as I read it. In the end I think what I liked the most was giving a perspective of the people who didn't fit with the traditional society.
Śniła się sowa, Ewa Ostrowska. Raw, disgusting, unsettling portrayal of a small, closed off countryside society, and its violence. As small, closed off countryside societies are one of my biggest fears, I loved (?? appreciated) this book.
Owoc żywota twego, Ewa Ostrowska. As above, but even more disgusting and unsettling. Dead Dove Do Not Eat, but if you're fully ready for what awaits you, it's a good read.
Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad. Actually good.
Kiss of the Spider Woman, Manuel Puig. Very cool idea for the book structure (dialogue-only, two inmates try to pass time, one recounts to the other the movies he had seen). But the story itself isn't bad also.
Dungeon Meshi, Ryouko Kui. Beautiful! Heartwrenching! Heals your depression! Elf twinks! Extremely thought out worldbuilding and a consistent, planned out story. Love to see it.
I don't include the manga I've read that are ongoing (or I hadn't finished them).

A3! Minagi Tsuzuru - Translation [N] Literary Impasse
Tumblr media
*Please read disclaimer on blog; default name set as Izumi
---
Tsuzuru: The books I recommend for Sakuya are…. (In connection to role study, all of us are gonna read novels written by literary masters and write book reports, huh…) (That’s such a Sakuya suggestion.) (It’s pretty fun coming up with a lineup of book recommendations for each member too.) Alright… next is Masumi’s.
Tumblr media
*notification sound*
Tsuzuru: Masumi, I’ve sent a lineup of books I recommend for your book report over LIME.
Masumi: …There’s so many.
Tumblr media
Tsuzuru: It’d be tough if you don’t find a book that piques your interest, so I sent a lot. You should pick what you’re going to read soon.
Masumi: I know. You don’t have to tell me.
Tsuzuru: By the way, I think I’m going to use “Run, Melos!” by Osamu Dazai.
Masumi: Hmm.
Tsuzuru: Don’t you want to hear the reason?
Masumi: Not really. Not interested.
Tsuzuru: I thought you’d say that. *Sigh*…
-pause-
Tsuzuru: (Yep, “Run, Melos!” is fascinating even if I read it again…) Now then, I should get down to writing my impressions.
Tumblr media
Masumi: …
Tsuzuru: You seem to be taking it easy there, Masumi. Have you written your book report?
Masumi: I’ve finished mine already.
Tsuzuru: Eh, when did you… Which story did you pick?
Masumi: “The Tomb of Wild Chrysanthemum”.
Tumblr media
Tsuzuru: Huh? That wasn't included in the list I sent you. I mean, I don’t mind since I sent those as a reference point. Did you choose from works you already knew?
Masumi: Madoka told me about it at school.
Tsuzuru: Oh, you heard from Madoka? So he reads stuff like that, huh?
Masumi: He understands me really well.
Tsuzuru: (Heh… I see, Masumi’s getting along quite well with Madoka.) Alright, I’ll start writing mine too.

*typing noises*
Tsuzuru: “Lately, I’ve been writing more and more works that conclude with various different endings…” “But as I read this work, I realized that I really do prefer happy endings.” “At the same time, it made me recall our debut show ‘Romeo and Julius’, and it was a good opportunity for me to remember how I felt at the very beginning.” …There. This is how a book report goes, right? Let’s review it a few times before I submit it.
-pause-
Tsuzuru: I never thought you’d make an anthology for us, Director. So this is what you meant when you told us to leave what we’ve written to you.
Tumblr media
Izumi: It would’ve been a waste to just write them and be done with them. So I wanted to physically preserve them together like this.
Masumi: An anthology made by Director. I’ll display it in a household shrine*.
Tsuzuru: Uh, there’s no household shrine in our room, you know?
Citron: I’m going to read Tsuzuru’s report next!
-pause-
Itaru: Oh, he read “Run, Melos!”.
Chikage: Why did you select that?
Tsuzuru: Well, simply put, I wanted to write an opinion piece about a work that everyone knows… I thought I might have different impressions reading it this time from when I read it in the past.
Tumblr media
Chikage: I see.
Izumi: The report you wrote was really easy to read. I thought, that’s a playwright for you.
Itaru: Overall, it’s put together really well.
Citron: I love stories with happy endings too~!
Sakuya: I enjoy all the stories you write, Tsuzuru-kun. But I also love stories with happy endings since they make me happy!
Tsuzuru: Thanks. If all of you say so, then it gives me the energy to write. I’ll keep working hard so I can create works that all of you enjoy too!

Prompting is now closed! Claiming opens on June 26!
Tumblr media
**This is NOT the claiming post! The claiming post will be available on June 26!**
The prompt list can be found here! A huge thank you to everyone who submitted something!
Please review the rules if you have not done so already, but here is a quick summary of some things to keep in mind:
Please remember that this fest is all about crack!fic, so every story submitted must feature at least a hint of that idea. As you can see in the definition I left on our rules post, that idea is pretty broad, haha.
However, I want to be clear: you are in no way required to tag your fic as crack!fic (or any variation), either on AO3 or in your header. Throwing it back to the example of my own questionably cracky work on the rules post, I didn't label it that way, but I do know it can be viewed that way. As long as you are capturing the essence of the fun and fancy-freeness of this fest, you are good to go.
We will absolutely be accepting any written form, as crack!fic does tend to lend itself to so many different things. So poetry, letter!fic, texting!fic. We’re not accepting strictly art, but I think comics and meme!fic, etc., would still fall under “writing” - at least in my opinion. So please keep in mind, anything goes!
All participants must be over the age of 18.
Just like with prompt submissions, the claiming of prompts will also be done via Airtable Form, which will become available sometime on June 26.
Prompts may only be claimed once. This fest is fic-only, so no art, unless you want to submit it along with your fic! I'm so, so sorry to all the artists out there - I just wasn't sure how to fit it in with the theme at this time. However, this may change in the future, and I'll let you all know if it does.
***Please make sure to double check your prompt number prior to submitting your claiming form on the day of, as things have the potential to get rearranged before we get there!
There are no minimum or maximum word requirements. Everything must be betaed, proof-read, checked, and edited.
Once you have submitted your piece, feel free to select another one! (And I definitely encourage this, as I'd love nothing more than to see a slew of crack!fic goodness in my inbox! ;D)
Posting will be anonymous, so please don't give the game away by posting anywhere else, or replying to comments, or hinting on your journal until after reveals. Also, because this is an anonymous fest, the piece you submit must be a complete, stand-alone work and can't be based on any of your other works, prequels, sequels, etc.
If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please shoot me an email at [email protected]!

The Guests By Agnes Ravatn

The Guests
By Agnes Ravatn
Translated by Rosie Hedger
Orenda Books
Publication Date: 18 January 2024
A new novel by Agnes Ravatn is always an event to celebrate, even in a cold and windy January. I remember coming across her English language debut, The Bird Tribunal some years back and discovered it was such a memorably atmospheric and beautifully written novel which really was a standout. While Nordic Noir can often be unfairly categorised between the police procedural and the more violent thriller, authors such as Ravatn show there is so much more to the subgenre. Undoubtedly both Nordic and Noir, her books could simplistically be described as psychological suspense novels, although even than definition does not really capture the quality of her work.
The Guests is Ravatn's third novel translated by Rosie Hedger and like her debut and The Seven Doors, it is a standalone novel which focuses on married mother of two Karin and her husband Kai. The couple have taken the opportunity of a week's holiday together in the fjords. As the story develops, the reasons behind this opportunity become clear as do the conflicts within Karin's own mind towards this trip.
Karin, our narrator, is quite a self absorbed individual and to be honest a bit of an inverted snob. While she completed a law degree, her career since has not taken the direction that she wanted it to do making her frequently envious of others. While she reveals that she holds particular values for example in the raising of her children, whom it must be said don't often appear in her thoughts, her reluctance for them to spend time online (for example) is not matched by her own actions. Staying in the holiday home of a rich associate on a remote peninsula, there is little to occupy Karen's thoughts other than make comparisons between the life that she normally leads, and to the owners of the luxurious abode.
Karin does rise from her own introspection for a while and takes a walk along the shoreside from their temporary home. Those other residents of the peninsula have lives far removed from that of her own. When a chance encounter leads to a short exchange with a neighbour whom she believes she would never see again, Karin makes a comment which will later land her in trouble - or at least make her have to save face (God forbid).
Before long Karin and a reluctant Kai find themselves performing a role to others, but can they do it convincingly and how would this actions eventually play out?
The Guests is a smooth, clear and absorbing read. Indeed while reading it, I did wonder if my compulsion to keep reading suggested a similarity to Karin and her obsessive thoughts. I found the story has a lot to say about human perceptions as our narrator encounters challenges to her preconceptions and contradictions to her opinions yet it is never clearly apparent if these could ever change her viewpoints. Like a case study of people from different backgrounds, Kai and some of the area's other residents also gradually reveal there are secrets, knowledge and acquaintances which had not been anticipated. There is a large degree of humour to the novel, at the expense of the characters and also an undercurrent of high stakes being raised as the story develops. It is one that I found very absorbing and comes highly recommended.
Many thanks to Anne Cater at Random Things Tours for inclusion on the blog tour and Orenda Books for an advance copy of The Guests. Please check out the other reviews of this book on the blog tour as shown below.
Tumblr media
It started with a lie… Married couple Karin and Kai are looking for a pleasant escape from their busy lives, and reluctantly accept an offer to stay in a luxurious holiday home in the Norwegian fjords. Instead of finding a relaxing retreat, however, their trip becomes a reminder of everything lacking in their own lives, and in a less-than-friendly meeting with their new neighbours, Karin tells a little white lie… Against the backdrop of the glistening water and within the claustrophobic walls of the ultra-modern house, Karin’s insecurities blossom, and her lie grows ever bigger, entangling her and her husband in a nightmare spiral of deceits with absolutely no means of escape…

HGP REVIEW- Ch 2, Why Do We Parent the Way We Do?
My prediction made at the end of the last chapter's review is quickly proven false as we get into this chapter. I thought the question about why one parents a certain way was going to delve into things like the way one was parented, an avenue that I have seen explored elsewhere and find very interesting. But this chapter is taking a much broader look at why our (US) culture parents a certain way.
The gist of this chapter is that a great deal of modern pediatrics can actually be traced back to advice pamphlets written for foundling hospitals, which had to industrialize baby care due to scale. This advice got repackaged and sold with the promise of making exhausted parents' lives easier, and this has heavily impacted the development of childhood medicine and psychology.
This might strike some as anti-intellectual, but I think there's a good point about how the historical goals of the field have impacted the conclusions that have been reached and broadly accepted. In fact, I think that for marginalized readers, this is going to sound incredibly plausible, as they're already far too familiar with medical bias and misinformation being taught as standards to their physicians. Medical curricula are already rife with racism, fatphobia, ableism, misogyny. It's not really a stretch to imagine that ageism is also deeply entrenched.
I mean, children ARE pretty marginalized in our culture, consistently othered, disrespected, and routinely excluded even from spaces that are otherwise safe for them for the comfort of others. I'm not really shocked to learn that much of the standard wisdom on child welfare has more to do with making kids convenient than with helping them live safe, happy lives.
I've even noticed it myself on the post-visit handouts I received from L's doctors. Some of the advice makes sense, much of it is definitely an improvement from the norms in decades past, but some of it is also outright damaging or counter-productive. Like, yes, thank you for reminding parents not to assault their children for doing something wrong. No, please do not recommend parents instead isolate children for making mistakes. I'm really bothered by the recommendation that I should put my child in time-out, withholding attention, affection and co-regulation, if she doesn't act how I want. It's less damaging, I'm sure, but it's still hurtful and still counterproductive to the goal of raising a good human.
Somewhere in here I get an answer to my question from chapter 1 about whether or not Doucleff tried to find respectful parenting sources from her own culture before taking her 3 year old jetsetting across the globe. Apparently the answer is yes, she read many parenting books before Rosy was born, but when she delved into their sources (for those that even had sources) she found major flaws in their methodologies, like small sample sizes. This is why science-based parenting advice flip-flops so much from decade to decade, she claims: because studies are done on too few children to be reliable.
Keep that in mind as we follow our amateur anthropologist across the planet.
It's not wrong to point out. It also makes some sense as to why it would be that way; I can't imagine many parents are eager to sign their kids up to be experimented on, even relatively unintrusive experiments. I can believe that sample sizes are an issue in the field of child psychology. I just think it's important to keep in mind that Doucleff is not a psychologist or anthropologist or anything of the sort- she has a doctorate in chemistry and worked for NPR- and I can think of at least one book written by people with more relevant qualifications (that was out at the time Doucleff was reading and dismissing parenting books*, though that doesn't mean she's even heard of it) that I would recommend before this one, based on what I've read so far. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
These first two chapters were mildly interesting but pretty skippable if you're just looking for parenting advice. The next section begins the actual discussion of parenting techniques, and I have mixed feelings about it. We'll get into it in the next review segment.
*Oh yeah, I did find a possible answer as to "When did all of this travel and interviewing occur?" A later chapter has an illustration of a family member ID card for Rosy, and if her real birthdate is used, she was born in 2015, placing the events of the anecdotes in about 2018 and later.

✨ Fic Writing Review 2023 ✨
I haven't actually been tagged by anyone but I saw @bereft-of-frogs give it a go and thought what the hell, why not (I hope you don't mind me tagging you 💜). I also don't have anyone in mind to tag but if you see this feel free to tag me (or not) and give it a go yourself!
Words and Fics
192,428 words posted according to ao3 but at least 90k of that has been carried over from previous years.
Broadly speaking, I've written for two fandoms. The Witcher (Netflix series and Blood Origin) and Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor.
14 fics posted, but again two of those were started in 2022 and another in 2020, all three finished in the beginning of this year.
13/14 of the fics posted/updated this year are finished, one started but on hiatus while my current jfo WIP continues to consume my brain.
Speaking of, said WIP is curently sitting at 132k and only has two or three chapters left before I can start editing.
most recent fic: It's only slaughter, we're only liars (jfo)
longest: that would be A Quest for your Memories (the Witcher), the fic that was haunting me from March 2020. Originally supposed to be a one shot, it ended up being 51,734 words long.
shortest: Echoes (blood origin, 1,118)
Top Fics by Kudos
A Quest for your Memories (794)
I'd Burn So Bright It Blinded (623)
What's The Point (440)
If You Ask Me For My Fire (299)
After The Blood Comes The River (211)
Unsurprisingly they're all witcher fics since it's a much much bigger fandom than jfo/s
Gonna give some love to my personal faves since the Jedi ones can't compete:
It's only slaughter, we're only liars
No more time for my loss
Touchdown
My fandom fic events in 2023
Whumptober which took up a lot of September but was a lot of fun. I enjoyed coming into it with a new fandom since I didn't bother last year.
Upcoming Events and Projects for 2024
My priority at the moment is to finish my current WIP and then start editing it. While I'm doing that I might try to finish off some of my older fics that have been left hanging.
After that I've already got a whole two part thing planned out that will hopefully be a litte shorter that I'm really looking forward to getting to. Beyond that, I don't know. I'll continue to tie up loose ends (there's a lot of them) or I'll keep writing new stuff. Either way, I don't see me stopping any time soon.
I've had a lot of fun writing this year, though for a couple of months I was worried I was running out of inspiration (mostly because my then current hyperfixation was waning). But then Jedi survivor came along and I've been hooked ever since. I didn't used to think I was capable of writing long fics but between finishing a couple of 50k's and now having such a long WIP I can see I was just being silly. "Do it scared" is good advice.
Happy new year!!
Rules & Tags* below the cut!
Rules: Feel free to show whatever stats you have. Only want to show Ao3 stats? Rock on. Want to include some quantitative info instead of stats? Please do this. Want to change how yours is presented? Absolutely do that. Would rather eat glass than do this? Please don’t eat glass but don’t feel like you have to do this either.
*I usually do stuff like this on my sideblog but that's not where my main focus is any more and idk how many people know about my main. Hence why I don't want to start tagging fandom people. Also idk many people in the jfo/s fandom or who has already done it.
So no tags becasue I'm too shy basically and I don't see that changing any time soon sadly. I love being tagged, I'm just bad at reaching out first...

No Fooling: Dark Force Fest Saturday, April 1st, 2023 Review
Tumblr media
(Hi, few days later Morticia here! I'm transferring the original Blogger post to Tumblr, and am fleshing out more of the content with links and anything new I've learned in the days following the event.)
I know I have other posts I really should have written and posted long before this one, but it is what it is. I'm just a girl with a cellphone and a passion to talk about this festival Right NOW.
Why am I only writing about Saturday? Because it was the only day I could go.  I had an Amazing time and wouldn't trade a single second of it for anything.
Dark Force Fest is a 3-Day Alternative Music and Lifestyle Festival in New Jersey. Formerly a convention known as "Dark Side of the Con", Dark Force Fest has an amazingly Passionate and Prolific Organizer, Jet, and is presented through his company, former Social Media site now Gothic Retail store, VampireFreaks. VampireFreaks is a topic for another post and maybe a full video deep dive.  There's so much to cover, there was so much to do! I chose to check out the Swap Meet, the Live Bat Exhibit, The Super Smash Bros Tournament (I lost), and the Goth Dad Q&A. While  I could have walked into any number of bands, I specifically saw Carnivore A.D.'s Tribute to Type O Negative. For all my fan-girling about Vision Video with my friends, I couldn't stay for their show.  A quick note: While there was the banner on the outside of the Sheraton, there wasn't anything telling you where registration was. The few people milling around outside were talking in groups that seemed to be attendees. There was one Security guard inside of the Main hotel entrance to tell us to "go out and around". Signs, Please! Let's start this wordy tour of DFF2023 with the first thing we encounter after registration: the Vendors. Gathering the creative, dark minded Artisans that build our community via Clothes, Jewelry, Housewares, Cosmetics, and Consumables, Dark Force Fest gives a physical location to many vendors that would otherwise not have as targeted an audience at their local Farmer's Markets on Sunday mornings. It also gives prospective buyers, and online followers, the opportunity to meet the artists, and make the decisions they need in order to ensure they make a great purchase they'll brag about for years to come. There is nothing more satisfying than saying "This was handmade by_____ !" and knowing you're helping directly keep our community thriving. In some cases, you're literally saving lives.  A few of the Artists that I interacted with mentioned how they traveled a few Hours to vend at the festival, but felt it was worth it to be more immersed in their culture. A few lucky vendors would share the concert rooms with the shows, getting themselves some pretty comfortable seats to a plethora of bands. One such vendor was the effervescent Shirley, The Tragic Doll. She creates deeply personal works of art about living with Scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that she describes as feeling trapped in her own skin. Incorporating Skeletal imagery and the color Red, representing Blood, to symbolize the effects of her condition, Shirley hand makes every piece of her Horror Art with passion, and anatomically correct hearts, because her motto is "Live My Heart Out".  Thanks to the map and a few kind Vendors, I was able to find the Swap Meet in the Skyland room. This was my first Swap Meet and I was surprised to find a few items in my size, or near enough I can modify them in future content. Everyone there was so helpful and wonderful, suggesting items they think would fit me or suit my style, and I'm so thrilled to say they were absolutely correct! (Thank you Rainbow Fairy; you took my hat in return for your snake skull dress.) The kindness and sense of community in that one room was so awesome, it really made me love being a part of this culture. Swap Meets are a great way to clear some unused clothes/boots/accessories from your closet and pick up something you might love forever. The Swap Meet at Dark Force Fest was Free with registration. While looking for the Batcave and taking some photos of the overall hallways, I passed Dusty Gannon of Vision Video without noticing. So, behold this glorious shot of Goth Dad being a Goth Rock Daddy.
Tumblr media
The Star Wars cosplay group, the 501st stormtroopers, were raising money for charity.  There was an interesting skeletal capital(ism) M mouse sculpture by Jasin Cadic in the main lobby of the hotel. "The Batcave" was an ongoing  Live Bats Exhibit w/ Joseph D’Angeli (NJ Batman). Joseph D’Angeli’s “Bat-Cave” is the only facility specializing in bat conservation in the NY/NJ area. These cuties were pretty shy, but so was I.
Tumblr media
Feeling a little worn out, we wandered out to the food trucks and picked up poutine to snack on while determining if we had the energy for a band. I believe it was the hotel that provided extensive options for more food inside of the event, in front of the Main Ballroom. I'm really glad there was free Water stations and clean Restrooms tucked around the venue. There was a water station in the Batcave, and a private bathroom in the Gaming rooms that I knowingly used, there was most likely more.
Deciding we needed to rest from the sensory overload, we found the Super Smash Bros Tournament, and we're incredibly thankful for this respite. There were a handful of other people so we all took turns warming up. As I had planned around seeing Carnivore A.D. and Goth Dad, I did leave immediately after I lost my bracket.
Carnivore A.D. is the closest to Type O Negative live as you can possibly get in 2023. No joke, they're Peter Steele's former Carnivore bandmates! I wanted to see this show because 1. I like TON. 2. My bestie loves TON and I miss her a lot. 3. They pair well with The 69 Eyes. I definitely fucked up by headbanging,  but it's irresistible!
We had a little time left and found Goth Dad's Q&A still going back in the Skyland room. People had some great questions, and it was powerful to hear him speak on the horrors of active combat. Dusty Gannon, the internet's "Goth Dad", has made a huge impact on how Goths and Goth Culture is seen and accepted online through Tiktok and Instagram. The Goth Dad persona is a Gentle, Kind, and Accepting person that you want to have call you sport and pat you on the head. Embracing the gender breaking styles of Post Punk influences, Dusty creates intense and stunning eye makeup looks and can be caught performing in torn tights, skirts, Fishnets and Lace tops, alongside his bandmate, Emily, as Vision Video.
We had to leave to make a dinner reservation with some friends from the area. My paper wristband didn't hold up, it frayed from being too tight and handwashing, and popped right off in the car while on our way to dinner. I didn't want to push my luck trying to get in later with a broken band.
Needless to say, I'm super excited for the next Dark Force Fest, and will be doing a whole lot more planning and managing to get to enjoy even more of it to share with you all.
Somethings I wish I had checked out (limiting to Saturday Only events: this list would get too long for the whole weekend):
-Custom fit Fangs -The Costume Contest hosted by Electronic Saviors: Industrial Music to Cure Cancer -Write a Song with Bella Morte -Nightmare Before Christmas Shadowcast -V is for Villains -Leathers - Vision Video  -Actors
Thanks for Reading all this!  Reach out to me on my socials: Linktree

Professors – Using Instructor-Directed Learning Methods

Professors – Using Instructor-Directed Learning Methods – Using Lectures Strategically With Changes
Despite accumulating evidence that lecturing is ineffective, it is still the most prevalent method for teaching adults (Bligh, 2000). Please keep in mind that not all lectures are bad; just the bad ones are! The goal of this essay is to assist professors who use lectures as part of their strategic teaching. So effectively by using change-ups. While traditionalists and revisionists disagree about the importance of lectures. The following widely acknowledged reasons for using them (Brookfield, 2000):
To lay out the main contours of a body of work.
Change-ups, as defined by Middendorf and Kalish (1996), are one of the most effective strategies for lecturing in fifteen-minute parts. A change-up is intend to reset kids’ attention clocks. Let me give you some explanations and suggestions before I give you many examples of change-ups:
Change-ups can be short (even two-minute) interludes between two parts of a lengthier lecture. The goal is to divert students’ attention away from your speech and then redirect it back to it.
Shifts to completely different parts of the class can use as change-ups. You may give a fifteen-minute lecture, then show a fifteen-minute video clip, followed by a planned, small-group debriefing. Connects the film to the preceding lecture.
Whip-around Pass
Whip-around Pass is a pass that allows you to go around in circles. Also, Whip-around Pass is a game in which you ask a question to the entire class and then call on a specific student to respond. The “whip-around” is caused by immediately calling on other students for short responses rather than lingering on one or two students who want to deliver long-winded answers with supplementary comments. Students who don’t have an answer or whose solution has already been presented can “pass” using the pass element of the technique.
There will be occasions, especially in a small class, when there are so many new responses that you will want to go around the room more than once. If you have a large class, you may want to rotate through one segment for the first question and another segment for the second. a few quick inquiries At the outset of class, hand out index cards. When it’s ready to switch things up, have students quickly go over their notes and write down one question they have about the lecture on a card. Gather the cards, read some of them aloud, and respond to the questions. Students can also exchange cards, read them, and then return them to the asker with an answer.
Question
Write your answers to the question. Pose a question on the lecture’s content. All children are required to write an answer. Can be done on a Post-it note or an index card for added fun. After everyone has had a chance to react, have a few students read what they’ve written, and then have all of them read what they’ve written.
Review your notes.
The Note Review is a simple change-up that requires no additional supplies. Stop the lecture at a suitable point and urge students to get together with a partner and discuss notes. They’re supposed to look for disparities in what they put down, such as omissions, variances in viewpoint or perception, or differences in style. Students can use the comparison to double-check their notes, reread the subject, and reset their attention clocks so that the lecture can continue.
