#also pls don't come for me for liking zuko

my opinion is adding on to ur opinion about zuko's arc which is YES def one of the best in TV history been a while since I watched atla but 2 things that stand out abt why it hit so hard - #1 is how even tho his family life was so miserable and it explained why zuko was the way he was, they didn't make him out to be the victim and they found that balance between sympathizing with him + not pitying him + holding him accountable for mistakes he's made along the way (unlike for example snape in HP who's entire bitter/resentful existence was apparently justified bc he was with the good guys all along like come ON, where is the self accountability) #2 is how they showed so MANY ups and downs in his life, and just when you started to think yess he's good now, something in him would switch and he'd go back to his old ways again. let's get spiritual for a sec, tell me that's not EXACTLY what it means to try and tame ur nafs, as ugly as the struggle can get, the beauty is in not giving up and picking urself back up every time you fall and ALSO omg I'm realizing as typing this - so the whole series was building up to the day when the comet would strike right? it's been a few yrs since I watched so I don't rmbr exactly but there was some day it was leading up to, so let's continue with the religious parallel theme, let's say that the comet day represents death, so as long as we sort ourselves out and are "good" before we reach our end, that's what counts. like yea you can slip and fall as many times while you're alive but u have to rmbr there IS a deadline bc that's how human nature is, without a deadline there is no external pressure urging us to be good and we're stuck in this cycle of fluctuating b/w good/bad so long it kind of tears us apart - and now tying it back to zuko's arc, zuko effectively had a حسن الخاتمة aka a good end because he became good because it was too late and in time for when it really counted!! I hope I haven't lost u lmaoo pls also share ur thoughts on this would love to hear them
If ur a fan of atla please take a few minutes to read this

Fandoms & Ships
I am a true nerd, and as such, continously seek out new media and their fandoms, and become involved with them, while also cyclically coming back to the ones I already love. I am a romantic, and I love see love in general (all types of love, not just romantic!), so I am also a very big shipper!
I don't always have a set ship(s) for every fandom I find myself in, nor do I think it necessary to try and "prove" that mine are better than other ships. I like what I like, and I like seeing what others like as well. So I might have OTPs, but I also like engaging with content for all kinds of ships, even true rarepairs.
I also don't think it necessary for a fandom to have ships, so just because I have a listed ship that I like/love, doesn't mean I can't have neutral/objective thoughts and opinions about that particular piece of media.
That being said, here's a list of fandoms I come back to, or keep up with, and a list of ships I have a preference for. OTPs are bolded! Oh, and media (as in the series, books, shows, etc.) are rated according to my opinion!

Why I like Jaden
Tumblr media
"As long as I'm here... As long as we duelists are here, we can continue to believe in our possibility!
Your turn will never come."
One trope in storytelling that I tend to really enjoy is the "reaching your lowest point" trope. I know, shocking, the guy that loves stories about struggles, relationships with misery, and fighting back to earn your victories... Who would have imagined it!!
Things like" The Empire Strikes Back" from Star Wars, "The crossroads of Destiny" from Avatar, the fight against Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist, the season 2 finale of Reboot, basically every episode of Arcane, the entire final arc of Cahinsawman part 1...
I just love when the heroes get their asses kicked super hard, take some time to lick their wounds, and then return even stronger than ever after going through some spiritual or emotional journey so they can get back to the fight, except this time you, the audience, is even more pumped than ever to root for them because now we have a score to settle!
And I feel like the character that left the first big impact on me with this trope was Jaden, from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
Tumblr media
What's funny is that, even before his "fall from grace" moment, Jaden was already a character that I liked a lot.
I was super into his cheerful and upbeat attitude while playing the duels. This was a small thing that kinda bothered me about characters like Yami or Yusei, they never seemed like they were having fun while playing. I like that Jaden would look like he was having a blast even when the opponent was winning because just enjoyed their cool boss monsters or weird strategies that much.
Even when he lost he would just be like "Man... That was still awesome, though! Let's do it again sometime!" He was just such a chill dude, the kind you want to hang out and play with.
Tumblr media
I also was a huge fan of his deck. "Elemental Heroes" was an archetype that mixed a ton of things that appealed to me in particular. The use of superheroes reminded me of Marvel and DC movies, the use of the elements reminded me of Avatar and Xiaolin Showdown, and the use of fusion reminded me of Dragon Ball Z, Digimon Adventure 02, and Megaman: Battle Network.
A big part of why I liked the duels in GX was that it always felt exciting to see what fusion he was going to use next, which heroes would he combine, and what they would look like. It was like in Ben 10 where part of the fun was finding out what new alien would be used next. It just brings a very kid-like joy.
Although I really wasn't a fan of the whole animal alien thing they tried to do later... To me it felt like fixing what wasn't broken.
Tumblr media
But yeah, the real thing that made Jaden stand out so much was his journey back from hell.
I think this was probably a common thing at the time, have a character fall so they can rise back again, but this was my first time seeing it done in such a way. It wasn't just that he took a hit, it was that the hit itself was his own fault.
Jaden often receives negative comments from the fanbase that he is too cheerful, too upbeat, and that he doesn't take things seriously enough (because God forbid we have someone actually enjoying playing card games... ), so it was interesting to see him going through an experience that makes him completely question his life choices and wonder if he needs to change before progressing.
Like I mentioned in my Zuko post, I love when characters look back at their own actions and try to wonder if someone's getting hurt because of the way they live their lives, and this is exactly what Jaden goes through.
His arc isn't just a "reaching my lowest point" moment (they did that in season 2 already), it's also a "reality check" combined with a "redemption arc" where he needs to look at his own flaws and grow from it so he can make up for his mistakes.
And what I really appreciate is that his mistakes aren't just boiled down to "don't have fun playing." His mistake was that he didn't take into consideration that there is a time and place for everything.
It's not that he should be always serious or always cheerful, it's that he needs to know not to live under extremes and realize when to be serious, when to be cheerful, and especially, when to consider the situation of those around him and their own struggles as well.
Tumblr media
This is one of the few series that actually feel like they make use of the "power of friendship," because a big problem Jaden was also having was that he was starting to get too strong for his own good and ended up relying on his friends less and less, and it was that reconsideration that caused his downfall and only when he realized that someone was suffering more than he was that he started his journey to truly maturing.
Whether it is kid-like Jaden or adult-like Jaden, there is always something about him that brings a smile to my face.
I feel like Jaden is one of those characters where you can analyze and take away tons of interesting themes and messages. Loss, growth, friendship, learning to enjoy life, knowing how to enjoy life, sympathy, support, sacrifice...

I've never understood Drew snapping in that one scene. Could you try to explain it? You seem to get him well
First off, hello and thank you! I don't know that I get him as much as I just like to poke around his brain and emotions and just don't shut up about him tbh? I see a fucked up fictional guy and explore his emotional issues like a corn maze. See also: Zuko, Clive from PL, BOTW Zelda who I'm counting as a fucked up fictional guy here, et cetera. So anon, I went back and watched that episode, and here are my thoughts. I’m keeping it as close to canon as I can here, though if you’re on my blog you’re likely looking for the ship side of it too. I will touch on that since I do think it’s canonically interwoven with this scene, but I’m trying to mostly focus on Drew as his own character. I do love shipping but more than that I think AG has made characters that stand well on their own, so I did take that into account though he is, in canon, somewhat inextractible from May since their stories are very deliberately playing off of one another. Anyways, let's go, feel free to disagree with me, I'm just some random person with opinions that people trust to go to for information for some reason. And I love it, though I'm not sure what I did to deserve it.
On the surface, it appears that Drew is just unhappy with Absol’s performance. I think we all know it’s not just that, though-but what exactly IS it? I have a few theories, since in the english dub, at least, it’s not clear on the surface level.
One, and probably the most popular theory I’ve seen back in ye olde pokemon forum days if we’re to not take the explanation of ‘absol did bad’ at face value, is that the stress got to him and she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, not helped by them likely having to face off. Which, sure, whatever- but Drew isn’t the type of person to let contest stress get to him. He’s about perfected that cool facade, though we are really seeing the cracks in the surface here. I think it’s fairly surface-level to read it as just competitive energy getting to him.
Theory two, I’ve seen people say it’s him getting freaked out and realizing how much of a threat May really is, and this is the moment where he takes her seriously. I think this may play into it a bit, but I do think he took her seriously before this point. This comes after Who What When Where Wynaut (WWWWW) and Spontaneous Combusken, both episodes where she challenges him or is neck-and-neck in terms of banter and conversation. Especially Spontaneous Combusken-in that episode, she’s so good at countering his remarks that he actually chickens out of the conversation (cue “Drew is such a weenie” from Max). Not to mention that in WWWWW she literally saves his ass from death via drowning.I think after that you kind of have to take someone seriously. So, I do think her being a serious rival that he sees as an equal plays into it, but I would not say this was the single defining event where that comes to the surface. However, evidence to support this is here- Solidad says May’s performance in the first round ‘really shook him’, and I do think that plays into it.
Theory three, the one I find the most interesting. I think that there’s a possibility that Drew is in his head about their rivalry and how that interacts and counteracts with his other feelings for her. Because how do you balance a delicate friendship, a rivalry, and romantic feelings? Not easily, I imagine, and I think Drew bottled up a lot of that and it hit a peak here and spilled out. First, we have him and May in a definite shift at this point. He’s still kind of arrogant, but it’s toned down and they are friends at this point. At the very least, he’s fond of her (source: that frame from WWWWW where he's just looking at her softly, as he does, and tumblr is back to not letting me insert images).
Actually, scratch that- at this point, it is solid canon he has a crush on her. Solidad does her ‘therapist breaking hipaa privacy laws’ thing and tells may, quote, “he has feelings for you”. Now, May, along with most advanceshippers (love you guys-not an attack lol), seem to assume that the word ‘feelings’ here isn’t super heavy. I put that down to her being dense though because the phrase ‘feelings for you is fairly cut and dry. So, canon-at this point, he likes her romantically, and he’s going to have to face her in the grand festival. I think this is a moment where he realizes those two things may be hard to balance in the future. I think he’s got a lot of anxiety about his relationship with May at the moment, whatever the fuck it is.
So, let’s move to the actual moment where he yells at her. First off, I think Solidad might have actually made things worse. (I think literally everyone being there was the opposite of helpful, actually- Drew is a weird introvert who probably felt somewhat trapped in the situation, though that’s my interpretation of it). Anyways, Solidad immediately calls him out on his bullshit in front of May, Brock, Max, and Ash, which… way to deescalate the situation there. While Drew DOES need someone blunt like that, I don’t think this was the time for her to do her therapist hipaa stuff and talk in front of everyone about how he felt like he failed (very prideful character). So, that makes it worse. So, he grits his teeth, nods, and tries to leave the situation. However, May catches him and tells him that Absol tried its best and that Drew shouldn’t be angry at it (which I really don’t think he is). And he yells at her.
It’s the scenes after it that solidify it as him struggling with their friendship/rivalry/romantic thing, though-or at least solidify it as a possibility if we're willing to look deeper than pokemon meant for us to. This theory is mostly cemented by the scene where Ash and Drew talk (sorry, respectshippers-not trying to take over your moment here!). They end up talking about rivalries. Ash says stuff about never talking to rivals about how they train (which. One, Paul foreshadowing. But two, wasn’t that the whole thing with Ash and Charmander’s blue haired cowboy trainer? Darius or something?) Anyways, this scene ends with Drew saying “I hear ya. We’re rivals, May and I.” And the emphasis on their rivalry in this talk is what really makes me think a lot of that anger was misdirected weird emotions he had towards their rivalry in conflict towards his other feelings. Is this a stretch? Maybe, idk, but I had fun and it makes sense in my head. Hope this is what you asked for!!!

OMG I just watched the DoBS pt 2 of S3 in ATLA.
I'm very late and have skipped stuff whuch I should go back to...
BUT WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF I HAVEN'T SEEN MUCH META ABOUT ?!
My boy Sokka ??? Literally the best strategist ? Hakoda being the bravest dad ever ? I can't even ? Sokka is so so so smart and underrated. I can't even. The way he guessed Ozai had a bunker. His impeccable team work and complimenting Toph. The way he knew where Azula was going though she did get him. Ofc, Toph being the best earthbender. The way that little powerhouse found the effing bunker. She folded that hugeass metal door. Aang being Aang, the last hope of the world y'know. And Azula. Azula is absolutely fabulous. Then there is the parallel between her manipulating Sokka with Suki and Ozai manipulating Zuko to stay with Ursa...That was very interesting. Some other tumblr user had put a screencap of them and mentioned some parallel but I hadn't caught on since I hadn't seen the episode. I think it was smokey-liveblogs ? Feel free to correct me OP or anyone else who knows. I apologize if I am mistaken.
One thing I really liked was that the guys were free to express their feelings. Sokka's tears broke my heart. Poor baby, it feels as if the trauma from losing his mom, and Yue caught up to him...He probs wouldn't have survived losing Suki. Let's not talk abt Zuko, I have a very soft spot for sad abused kids.
Also, Azula's portrayal is probably one of the reasons some of us (me included, yea don't come for my head pls) keep on forgetting she's 14. The voice acting, the makeup, the smoothness...My girl coulda been some very influencial general or minister instead of Zuko's sister/ 2nd queen consort instead of Ozai's daughter and I wouldn't have questioned her abilities as a military strategist/politician. (And pls don't misunderstand, I am not pro Ozula or whatever, what I mean to say is that this little girl is so skilled she could have been a major adult villain and no questions would be asked lmao. Even now, many ppl think she is the older sister.) It's also very creepy...What kind of upbringing made Azula this manipulative ? While I have no doubts that Azula is very cunning and intelligent, I do not think that this level of manipulative prowess is normal for a small 14 yo, she literally caught the other smartest character in the show aka Sokka and grabbed him by the feels, and he does not strike me as a hothead (Zuko)/ Softie (Aang). The parallel is meant to show where she got it from (aka dear old genocidal phoenix papa).
I have already spoken about my own opinion on the Zuko/Ozai showdown. While most people find it -rightfully- cathartic, I personally feel it was not the smartest choice nor the most pragmatic. Aside from my own preferences, the writers could have avoided putting themselves in a tight spot with Zuko being able to kill Ozai and choosing not to "because destiny duh" then trying to convince Aang to do it, which many people -rightfully again- claim is non-sensical at best, hypocritical at worst, since Zuko is chill with calling for his death, though some think that seeing his demise as a necessary evil is not the same as killing him because he's still his father... I think that the confrontation would have been more interesting at the end of the series with a defeated Ozai instead. I would have loved it if Zuko decided to leave a letter and disappear to save Iroh/do stuff. Not only would it have avoided these writing "complications", but also it would have told us more about Zuko & Ozai's relationship indirectly. Would he care to open and read ? How much time would it take him to realize that Zuko peaced out of the palace lol ? What would have Zuko done had he left with Iroh or would they have gone separate ways ( Z with the Gaang/I with the white lotus)? Imagine my dude decided to join the invasion asap lol ? I am not sure as I am very new to this whole writing meta or whatever what this is considered to be, but I think that the main reason for this scene is probably to show the badassery of lightning redirection and "Iroh's teachings" finally getting through Zuko by having the very special technique he created saving his life from Ozai's abuse and generally horrible ways (imperialism, racism, genocide, child abuse, and so on...). It could have been replaced with something even more badass in my humble opinion : maybe him stopping combustion man with it and saving the Gaang's lives, Iroh's whole every nation/element matters coming full circle with him genuinely realizing the severity of his mistakes and protecting people of different nations from his country's march of genocide, the lightning being more than the symbol of the abuse he's been through, but all of FN's sins against its citizens and the other nations. I find this idea interesting in that it would have made Zuko's conflict and learning fit more into the grand scheme of things instead of an individual scale (he redirected lightning twice, once to save himself, and once to save Katara in canon, which is sometimes interpreted as a romantic gesture rather than a purely selfless one).
I didn't want to tackle the emotional impact of their confrontation because I feel it has been very largely touched upon by other very talented meta writers. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Again, going back to Toph and Sokka...Their wisdom is amazing. They may be children, but they are wise beyond their years. They stopped Aang from going to his own death. No, you weren't ready yet, sweetie pie. I love how they didn't lose faith despite their defeat. You can't save the world if you aren't very, very tenacious.I would have shipped Sokka x Toph if it weren't for the age gap and Suki's existence. 🙈
And...The water fam standing amidst of the bombings/chucking projectiles and planning...I wonder how this show was actually aimed at kids...Not easy to watch. I love how it absolutely captured the raw, vile brutality of war.
PS: Hakoda digging Katara's waterbending skills gave me life too, especially after seeing that episode where Pakku refused to teach her because she was a girl. And also, God I love healing, especially as a real life biological/medical science enthusiast. 🙈💖 *squeals* + Hakoda/Bato/the other adults being selfless and letting the kids escape as opposed to Ozai leaving Azula to fend off intruders...I'll never laud enough Hakoda's shielding his kids from the war.
PS 2: english is my 3rd language so I apologize for any strange sentence structures/incoherencies.

Hi again! I adore the way you portray Zuko and Sokka. The differences in how they cope with their grief? Immaculate. When Zuko stood up and ran away from having to separate the games?? I was like EXACTLY!!! Listen. If I was desperately in love with my best friend? I'd move too. Like??? You think Zuko has the fucking confidence and willingness to make a REALLY good relationship potentially even a little awkward? Much less make it so the love of his life feels UNCOMFORTABLE around him?????! Absolutely not. Girl, I'd bury my feelings and run for the hills too. The way you show him trying to push through this long goodbye with as little pain as possible but still just trying to get OUT. Like fuck dude!!!! It hurts my little heart but I would do the exact same thing. "maybe it isn’t so much that Zuko needs to leave as that he doesn’t see how he can possibly stay." The fucking PAIN in that sentence!!!!! I am mentally shaking you by the shoulders and begging you to put my poor man out of his misery! Ole yeller his ass. (I'm joking, pls don't. The agony is DELICIOUS) Then we have Sokka who is holding onto every second like it's his last. Pushing away deadlines, ignoring what he needs to plan, even the little details about him eating out to keep food in the fridge??? He is kicking and screaming his way through this goodbye. The domestic vibes of "what do you mean you’re not coming home for dinner?" makes me wanna go FERAL. They are literally married!!!!! I hope you know that those bold ass doomsday markers that tell us how many days are left? Feels like a kick in the stomach every time. Especially after a sweet memory where everything is good and the end is far far away. The emotional whiplash of it all. And can I just say that world seems so real?? Like there's so many characters and stories they reference! Like wtf happened at the game??? I am out of the loop and so is Sokka, help us. Also!!! Frothing at the mouth over the intricate rituals. The dinner making, the wrestling, the knowing each other without having to think about it, the game nights, fuck it the looking at the other disrespectfully. Ma'am I am going to mourn this relationship and I'm not even in it! GOD. I am not ready for when Zuko has to leave. I have no idea if this even makes sense lol it's 3 am. Tell me if these are too long??? I feel like I write too much but there's so much I wanna highlight!!! Like "I saw that!!!! And I loved it!" And idk how to express that I want to simultaneously skip to the happy ending and also drown in the yearning for as long as possible, ya know? Anyways have a good day!!!!! You deserve the absolute BEST!!!! 💖
Anon! You are back with more very kind words!
I am THRILLED that you love how I portray the boys so much and that their grief feels so different and distinct! And Zuko running away and not wanting to make Sokka uncomfortable or knowing how to endure any awkwardness with him let alone being uncomfortable himself--EXACTLY! Right to the heart of it, you and Zuko, pack the bags and start sprinting.
I'm so happy him trying to push through the long goodbye (great description!) is so relatable and that all the emotions of it are hitting so deep and that the agony is so tasty!! And Sokka! Who is absolutely clinging with every bit he has, kicking and screaming is exactly right he would be throwing a full-on tantrum if he could bring himself to upset Zuko like that.
I am doing a little dance that you are feeling all the domestic vibes. They are basically married!! And they're maybe the only two people who don't realize it haha
And it's so odd to say but I am grinning so much that the doomsday markers are punting you in the gut each time, especially after the sweet memories when the end is so so far away! Emotional whiplash let's go!
And that the world seems so world and fleshed out!! I'm so thrilled all the references and characters and stories feel so real, there is a LOT of timeline and a LOT of moving pieces and development between all the friendships, not just theirs, so this has me over the moon! (And the baseball game was a day out with Hakoda and Bato (dating), Aang and Katara (dating), and Sokka and Zuko (...whatever they're doing). Kind of a quiet everyday thing that at the same time is so special and natural and easy (and might feel, for Zuko, like the way it *could* be, when he lets himself think about))
And YES to the intricate rituals! They have TRULY so many. Just layers and layers of rituals built up all around their feelings. Keeping themselves nice and cozy under there.
You aren't ready for when Zuko has to leave and neither are either of them, really (least of all Sokka). So much mourning, so much angst, I love that you're enjoying all the yearning so much! And these are absolutely not too long (I mean, I'm not exactly concise myself lol), I adore seeing all the things you noticed and loved!! It truly makes my day!!

Hi! Can I pls have a romantic ATLA  matchup? I'm Asian and a minor who uses she/they pronouns and an Aquarius and INTJ. My sexuality is bi demiromantic. I'm 5'0 with tan skin, black hair, brown eyes and glasses.I'm bilingual. People say I look intimidating and unapproachable since I don't smile or talk much around strangers but I try my best to be polite and nice.I'm very introverted and shy. I'll need to warm up to people but when I do, I will surprisingly be energetic.
I consider myself a fair, open minded and laid back person most of the time. I like to seek out my friends' company when bored. I either ask them to do something wholesome or something they are afraid of with me. I'm down to do anything with my friends. I'm hardworking if its something that interests me. I'm very creative but can't seem to make my ideas into reality mostly due to lack of resources or motivation. I'm kind of a pacifist but I will fight if pushed too far or my loved ones are endangered. I'm a pretty patient person.
My friends describe my  sense of humor as dark and cursed. I can be mischievous and chaotic but still reliable and smart. My hobbies are baking, gaming, art, true crime and supernatural stuff. I express my love with gifts and quality time but still physically affectionate. I get flustered easily. My ideal type is someone who I can trust with my life, someone I've known for a long time, very respectful of my boundaries and protective. Sorry if its too much info. Thanks in advance and stay safe💗
Hi hi hello!!!! I’m terribly sorry this took so long to get put up. Thank you for your patience, and thank you so much for this matchup request, and I’m actually so happy you added all this info for me to work with!!❤️
Given your lovely attributes, I have ultimately decided to pair you with….
Prince Zuko!
Tumblr media
I think that Zuko would really admire your patient and laid back nature, whilst having that charm of chaos that lights a fire within your soul. Your levelheadedness as an Aquarius and his passion as an Aries helps to bring you both to a place of balance in each others’ differing areas. As we all know, Zuko held a lot of hatred in his heart and refrained from becoming close to people because of previous betrayals. I believe that in you, he would find the kind of comfort he finds in his uncle Iroh, (meaning he may be reluctant to show it at first), and he would do absolutely anything possible to keep you away from his family affairs.
Given your interests and mbti type, Zuko would really enjoy dates where you can spend time together by letting your creative minds run free. This could come in the form of painting together, (which I’d imagine Zuko would become very messy from a lack of experience lol), most definitely enjoying private travels once he loses the title of fugitive, and stargazing on the roof of the palace/on a ship for sure.
As far as your general backstory, Zuko, much like yourself, prefers someone he has known for a long time because he needs a solid foundation of trust. I see you as being from a powerful family during Zuko’s childhood, hanging around Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee. You were the only one brave enough to denounce the ways Azula tormented her brother, but you did so in a way discreet enough that only he noticed. It’s no surprise he had a puppy crush on you in childhood. As the time went on and he was banished, your ambitious nature lead you to search for him. At first, he was rather cold because he believed Azula had sent you to trick him, but he slowly began to realize you never stopped trying to bring down his walls, and that It was all sincerity. It feels refreshing to him that your personality hadn’t lost that spark after all the years you’d spent apart. I also picture sort of an awkward friends to lovers story as the main story unfolds itself. In the end, you two end up together just before the summer solstice and start to learn more about each other as he takes over the fire nation :)
Zuko is very protective over you, but not in a way that is overbearing. He often asks you to stay by his side in public, but will follow you anywhere you want to go, all you must do is say the word. He loves how hardworking you are, but always checks in on you when you’re especially focused to keep yourself from overworking yourself. In situations where you’re feeling down, his favorite thing to do is take you out into nature and enjoy afternoon tea, just like his uncle did with him to calm his heart. He would also be very willing to learn about your culture, and make sure it is respected wherever you go within the fire nation, (or anywhere for that matter). It absolutely melts his heart when you give him literally anything, as this signifies someone thought of him enough to give him literally anything. Those little moments when your hands just barely brush against one another’s too? He loses it every time. He does however love the fact that you’re easily flustered, and will sometimes tease you until you’re scarlet in the face, just to burst out In laughter. He really loves and appreciates your loyalty and is happy to have an unchanged part of himself by his side. <3
A/N: My apologies, this is kinda all over the map, but I had so much fun and so many ideas😭😭 I hope you like this!

just read the coldest take. "azula never committed treason." yeah that's because her country was genociding people. you do realize that. she couldn't commit treason bc all the shitty things she did were fine in the eyes of the country that was genociding people. you do realize that.

Hi! I've been trying to find fics with trans characters lately, but I don't really read/write nsfw stuff, so thanks for the fic recs you recently shared! You can totally ignore this ask if you want, but I really love your writing & I was wondering if you have any advice for writing trans characters?
oh you're welcome!! <3
the following list is specific to transmascs bc that's where i fit and that's my experience, but that being said if there are any transfem people that would like to pls feel free to add on with a list of your own!!
treat them like people first, not everything in a trans persons life revolves around them being trans
if they bind then make sure to mention it, even just in passing - things like adjusting a strap, feeling winded after too much movement/too long wearing it, taking it off/putting it on, how they make you all sweaty in summer, how they stick to your skin when your damp and it's uncomfy
don't baby them!! eg: zuko is a grumpy bitch of a character, even when he's trans in fics he should still be a grumpy bitch of a character bc being trans doesnt automatically make him soft or emotional
please, god, stay away from the cis saviour trope
also the tortured trans person trope, it is possible for trans people to be happy (then again, if you're writing an angsty story then fuck yeah make it hurt - i just mean don't write a trans character if you're just going to make them miserable bc they're trans yknow?)
you don't have to make coming out a big deal, you don't even have to make the character come out unless it's genuinely relevant to the plot (but also don't write the plot w a coming out in mind? if that makes sense?)
idk if you've seen my list of pet peeves in trans fics but basically stay away from everything on that list kjddjk
do your research!! on trans terms, on medical transition, on dysphoria vs dysmorphia, listen to trans ppls experiences etc
i can't think of anything else and it's kinda tricky bc i can't differentiate between what trans ppl know about writing trans characters and what cis ppl do; bc some things are just such common-sense to me that i don't even think of it when ppl ask bc i think they'd already know dfkjs
um, if your trans and you see this and have something to add then please do!
also i've been tagging all my trans discussions as '#writing trans characters' so if you want to go through that and see if there's anything helpful there then you can (:

pls make a post abt how textual trans girl zuko is, it's everything to me but i haven had the strength to write it out for years 🙇‍♀️
lol i deleted that post bc i didn't want to get in a fight with the friend who reblogged that post about transmasc zuko but sure, ok
it's not super complicated really. like i don't think when it comes to 'trans headcanon' there is like, a 'reality' out there, zuko isn't a real person who can be definitely 'trans' or not, he's a symbol who we fill with our own ideas of personhood when we encounter the story. rather it's whether a reading is resonant or not, which is going to depend on the reader and what they can project on a character. I expect my reading will be more sympathetic with trans girls ;p
all the same... zuko is portrayed as being raised in a fascist society (seemingly most modelled on Imperial Japan, as interpreted by a couple of American liberals writing for a kids' TV network) which values military bravado and individual displays of skill, and exercises corporal punishment for 'dishonourable' behaviour; all of these are part of the construction of masculinity in our world. and we watch Zuko try very hard to live up to the values of this society (despite being, well, very bad at it, to the point he increasingly becomes an ineffectual joke villain), since he has been cut off from all kinds of affection outside of Iroh since his mother was exiled. Zuko is pressured to believe that this will earn the love denied by his evil father who very publicly and sadistically scarred his face. this is all pretty straightforwardly textual.
now these values aren't necessarily portrayed as intrinsically masculine in what we can 'learn' about the fictional Fire Nation, at least insofar as Azula is able to embody them. but it's not out of the question for fascist and nationalistic societies to provisionally accept cafab gender nonconformity in a limited number of cases, as examples like Violette Morris indicate; if we look further back we get things like the medieval 'one sex' model and occasionally beliefs that like, sexual anatomy would somehow follow behaviour. so we could say Azula is probably an exceptional case - the footloose-pastiche and beach episodes illustrate that the Fire Nation definitely has some pretty conventional gendering going on, and the vast majority of authority figures in the Fire Nation are men. iirc they establish that descent is not rigidly patrilineal but the Fire Lord can name an heir; that said all the Fire Lords we see have been men.
so. it's not automatically that Zuko's arc of struggling to reject the values of the imperialist Fire Nation must be read as a struggle with gender given the text; however it is obviously quite resonant insofar as like, the common egg experience of like, trying desperately to live up to the hell of death cult masculinity before eventually it breaks you and you have to figure out another way to be. zuko's 'crime' in his father's eyes, the thing that dishonours him, is not merely speaking out of turn but doing so to advocate for something other than "maximum death all the time"; essentially, acting too effeminate! Fire Lord Ozai has to very publicly burn his 'son' because otherwise the generals would be like, wow boss, your son is such a fag, must be something up with the royal line.
(meanwhile Azula succeeds on the terms of the 'male' power structure, she's a prodigy girlboss etc.; but perhaps part of her issue is that she knows her power is fraught, she's aware of the abyss if she ever steps out of line especially after seeing what happened to Zuko (with her willing assistance). we could easily imagine the suspicion that would exist if military authority is considered men's domain; that's why she works so hard to terrify everybody around her. she's also desperate for recognition; as much as it's not fully convincing, her breakdown in the final episode comes when she's named Fire Lord only for her dad to put himself on a new higher rank of 'Phoenix King', leaving her out of the big showy genocide he's about to perform, and she realises she's just a tool to him rather than someone he truly sees as a successor.)
now let's go to the first season, when zuko is chasing the gaang all around the map and failing to catch them constantly, and dressing up at night to do things that his society wouldn't sanction (ok it's a ninja outfit not like a dress or something but still, i'll take what i can get), while getting in fights with a big buff guy like Zhao for whom living up to the standard masculinity is assured and easy. the idea of trying to express femininity in some tentative way and having the door viciously slammed shut on your fingers and like, flinching back and going for tryhard masculinity in the wake of that traumatic experience is one that's gonna be viciously familiar for too many camab gender variant people.
later we see zuko's arc in the tea shop in Ba Sing Se - ok, it is on one level just like, learning to be a decent person and there's a somewhat unconvincing hetero romance subplot in there, but you can absolutely read zuko's struggle there in gender terms. like. it would be so easy to imagine him trying out a maid outfit during that arc, right? ...no? oh huh.
later still, you have his failed relationship with Mai while living in the Fire Nation in s3... Zuko's trying so hard to do a heterosexuality bless him, and he just has no idea. it's like, papering over the 'break' from society that has developed, so obviously doomed to failure.
but it's also kind of the case that i just see an angsty bishie-adjacent (tbf zuko is merely anime, not especially bishie) 'male' character and i'm like mmhmm, nice egg you got there. ultimately it doesn't really matter whether you read Zuko as trans woman or a gay femboy or just an angsty sorta guy; it's a narrative that simply resonates with like, stuff we experience around the crazy contradictory construction of gender we have to live under - it's material that's very easy to pick up and run with if you're in the mood.
so the impetus for the deleted post was like, if (in my reading) zuko's arc is so obviously about rejecting the values we associate with masculinity at great personal cost to define a narrative on 'his' own terms; sure, that's totally something the transmascs gotta struggle too with from their own particular zone and with its own difficulties, i can't speak to that, and ultimately these gender categories are totally incoherent and fake; but like, 'zuko is a trans guy' is not the obvious reading that suggests itself to me! and i think if Korra had the guts to just be like oh yeah and Zuko's a girl now that would be based as hell, but bryke would never be that cool in a million years, so it's just something you gotta insert yourself if you're in the mood.

Zuko/Suki Ultimate Ship Meme! :D
(From an old ask game I was doing - just had this sitting around since then.
Starfoxfanatic, I am so sorry this took me so long to get to! I know I told you it would be a while but real life got away from me more than I thought it would.)
General:
Rate the Ship -   Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! (I've never really looked into content for it since I've never been that into it, but I'm open to it; I first saw it as a Sokkla side-ship and I think some of those fics left me with a bad taste in my mouth) | Got Pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
How long will they last? - Hmm I'm not sure. I don't think their personalities mesh well enough to go forever and a day, but I think they could last a decent amount of time. Couple years, at least. I could also see them getting together in old age, like a second chance at love. (Actually kinda want to read a fic like that, now.)
How quickly did/will they fall in love? - It took them a hot second. They each had Mai and Sokka, and when they lost those, they had to rebuild the Fire Nation and Kyoshi Island. It took time for them to be in a good place to even think about it, and once they did get there, they had to get through the whole bodyguard/charge situation.
How was their first kiss? - I figure it was hot, heavy, and a bit frustrated. Probably Suki pissed that Zuko wouldn't just kiss her so she does it herself. I could see that happening.
Wedding:
Who proposed? - I usually always say the guy does it. Not sure why. I could see Suki deciding to just go for it, though.
Who is the best man/men? - Same answer as I did for Maiko and Zutara: Sokka, and Aang would be one but he’s helping Zuko’s former crewman Koji officiate.
Who is the bride’s maid(s)? - Katara, Ty Lee, and - this may come as a shocker - Azula. (Unpopular opinion: Azula and Suki are actually really good friends, and Azula didn't torture Suki or anything). I have a feeling she may also ask one or two of the other KWs, too.
Who did the most planning? - Suki insisted. She's always been a good planner for combat situations, but she doesn't have much experience when it comes to social situations, and she wanted the practice. (She pestered Katara into helping. Ty Lee didn't give her an option. Azula shrugged when Suki asked and said," We're good at the same things, why're you asking me?")
Who stressed the most? - This answer is always the same for any ship involving him: Zuko. Kid's literally a stress factory.
How fancy was the ceremony? - Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 (the small wedding that was just family and friends) | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 (the big wedding neither one really wanted because they're tired of the spotlight) | Kate and William wish they were this big.
Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - Ozai. Other than that...I can't think of anyone else? Suki doesn't really have any enemies that I can remember.
Sex:
Who is on top? - Suki likes to take charge so she is, most of the time. She's definitely more than willing to be on bottom, though.
Who is the one to instigate things? - Suki teases Zuko into doing it, just with little things - pinching his butt when she walks by, sly smiles, subtle touches and subtle flirting. That type of thing.
How healthy is their sex life? - Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 (they're both extremely fit and extremely good looking, so they really enjoy going at it, but they are also Fire Lord and Fire Lady/bodyguard - it's exhausting, sometimes) | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now
How kinky are they? - Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 (Suki is secretly a bit of a freak in the sheets, and while Zuko isn't up for all of it, he wants her to be happy - and he can't back down from a challenge) | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head
How long do they normally last? - Lots of stolen quickies in secret alcoves, but they go for as long as they possibly can (read: all night) whenever they can. Usually on vacation trips.
Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? - Yeah. Absolutely.
How rough are they in bed? - Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it.
How much cuddling/snuggling do they do? - No touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | A little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory.
Children:
How many children will they have naturally? - 2.
How many children will they adopt? - 0.
Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - It works out to about 60/40 with Suki taking most of them.
Who is the stricter parent? - Suki, probably? But it's not by much.
Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - Zuko's literally the Blue Spirit. Dangerous stunts are his bread and butter; Suki has to stop them when they get too crazy.
Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - Suki.
Who is the more loved parent? - Their kids absolutely adore them both.
Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? - Usually Zuko. Suki is the one who brings the big guns.
Who cried the most at graduation? - This answer is always Zuko.
Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - Considering Suki has broken out of a prison from the inside...probably her.
Cooking:
Who does the most cooking? - They like to cook together - they might mess something up, but it's more fun.
Who is the most picky in their food choice? - Suki is able and willing to eat just about anything (grew up poorer and she was a professional soldier); Zuko grew up with royal taste buds so he's a little more picky.
Who does the grocery shopping? - They go together.
How often do they bake desserts? - Suki likes her sugar. A lot.
Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Hmm probably meat lovers.
Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - Suki might be a bit more likely to pull it off, but I think they're both on the same level of "would try but just can't quite figure it out in time but the effort is cute".
Who is more likely to suggest going out? - Zuko.
Who is more likely to burn the house down accidentally while cooking? - Well, Zuko is literally a firebender. And he's a hothead. So...probably him.
Chores:
Who cleans the room? - Servants, most likely, but they both clean when they can.
Who is really against chores? - They’re both just kinda used to it - one lived on a ship for 3 years, one was a soldier. They adapted to cleanliness.
Who cleans up after the pets? - Servants, most likely.
Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? - Honestly I could see them both doing it.
Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? - Zuko is stressed because he's an awkward potato, Suki because she wants whatever plan she made for the evening to go well.
Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? - Suki.
Misc:
Who takes the longer showers/baths? - I think, in their case, it's about even, but it's probably Zuko during the winter. He gets cold easier, and Suki, well, the Fire Nation winter is just so much warmer than Kyoshi Island's, so she's more happy.
Who takes the dog out for a walk? - Suki loves walking the Fire Nation; it's so different and yet familiar, and she loves it.
How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? - Hmm...I think they'd like to decorate. Zuko forgets easily, but he likes doing it, and decorating with his family (Suki, their kids, Azula if she's around, Ursa, and Kiyi) is special to him. And Suki just...enjoys the decorations. Lots of Kyoshi-centric stuff gets added.
What are their goals for the relationship? - They had goals with their last relationships, and those didn't work out as they planned, so they're just winging it. They just want to be happy.
Who is most likely to sleep till noon? - Zuko can't help but rise with the sun. Suki is normally up early to work out and train, too, but on her rest days? She's conked out until the afternoon. (Zuko likes to sneak back into bed with her when he's done meditating/working/whatever he wants with his morning).

Ultimate Ship Meme: Azulaang
Rate the Ship -
Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! | Got Pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
How long will they last? - Until I say so. I can see them being together after death as spirits.
How quickly did/will they fall in love? - Ooooh boy. Azula struggles to understand friendship. I think she'd fall in love fast and hard but take the longest to realize. Aang wouldn't let himself get attached at first because Azula is unapologetic and one of the things I like about Azulaang is how it would push Aang to deals with the nitty gritty gray, not in a The Fire Nation was right all along way but in how even Kyoshi and Roku's conflict resolution let to disagreements. I think it would take Aang longer to fall in but once they reach a semblance of common ground he'd be well aware he's falling in love and would enjoy the ride.
How was their first kiss? - Let's see my fanfics. In Blue it was awkward. In Weightless it was sweet. In Smut it was horny and hate filled. In canon I think their first kiss would be very passionate and then they snap back to reality and Aang would evade while Azula denies so they wouldn't talk about it but they'd for sure be thinking about the kiss.
Wedding:
Who proposed? - Technically Azula. As soon as Aang hears about a Fire Nation wedding, either his friends or he learns about Ozai and Ursa's wedding, his mind would be set on a wedding. He wouldn't say anything but he'd squirrel away relevant wedding information like he'd hear a song and go "I want that instrument to play at my wedding." But Azula would have her life planned out by other people and there'd be a set date where Ozai now Zuko are supposed to comb through suitor requests (it was probably Ursa's role. If she's there she'd talk to Azula directly instead of Lo and Li. I don't think Lo and Li are high enough rank to determine the suitor but I think it would be customary/expected for their input to be asked). Azula would tell Aang something along the lines of "I should be wed." and he'd agree and then Azula will spend an abnormally long time wondering if he married her because he liked her or because it's his duty until she asks him while he's discussing potential baby room colors pre wedding.
Who is the best man/men? - Sokka and Toph. Azula was going to pick Momo but he made a better flower girl. Yes she did this to annoy Zuko (and because Toph didnt want to wear the bridesmaid outfit) it's okay though Fire Lord Zuko was the guest of honor.
Who is the braid’s maid(s)? - Katara, Suki, Mai, Ty Lee. Mai pretends she hates the outfit but she's secretly pleased.
Who did the most planning? - Aang did the most thinking but Azula did the most planning.
Who stressed the most? - Externally Aang. Internally Azula.
How fancy was the ceremony? -
Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big.
100% Azula's fault. Aang has no clue what Fire Nation weddings are supposed to be like.
Aang: Wow I can't believe all weddings in your Nation are this big.
Azula: They're not. It's because I'm Royalty and you're the Avatar.
Though I hc that Aang wants to get married in all the different Nations and Azula secretly wants to experience a small wedding so they get married 3 more times with one of them being a very small Air Nation wedding.
Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - Hmmm I'm not sure. On one hand, Ozai redemption. On the other hand, Ozai death.
Sex:
Who is on top? - Aang. Azula thinks she wants to be on top but she'd rather be pampered and Aang is more comfortable communicating and attending to needs. Aang has no strong preference either way and they do switch but this is their usual dynamic.
Who is the one to instigate things? - Azula but she denies it.
How healthy is their sex life? -
Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now
I think it's up to the reader's preference but I can see them being very private (Azula) and naturally talented (Aang) to the point where they assume every couple has sex daily. Hc that Aang and Suki talk about sex freely (ex: When I do __ should I __ or do girls prefer ___? I can never tell with Azula. Why do guys do ___ after ____ ? I've tried asking Sokka but he doesn't give me a straight answer.) Much to the fear of Sokka and Azula.
How kinky are they? -
Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head
Again up to the reader. They both like learning new things and are prodigies so I think they'd end up reading about things to try in bed (Azula) and would try things out to see what they like (Aang) until they learn what they and each other generally like/dislike.
How long do they normally last? -
Does the Avatar State remove your refractory period? >;3c
Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? - No. Aang likes overstimulating.
How rough are they in bed? -
Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it.
Neither can dirty talk. Azula is rougher. Aang likes to take it slow. She sets the pace in the beginning but he decides when it ends.
How much cuddling/snuggling do they do? -
No touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | A little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory.
Azula refuses to cuddle in public but in return they cuddle all night.
Children:
How many children will they have naturally? - hc them having twin boys at first with one firebender and one airbender because poetry. But Azula really wants a girl so they have a third child she is an airbender with Aang's charm and knack for getting in trouble and Azula's ruthlessness. Amon kidnaps her and instead of easily escaping (Aang's genes) she instead viciously mocks him the way only a preteen can (Azula's genes.) It's traumatic enough for Amon even before the parents show up. Then Aang wants another one and Azula wants another firebender so they do the do and surprise triplets! (maybe it has to do with ejaculatimg in the Avatar State lol) So 6 in total and lets say its 3 boys 3 girls with 3 airbenders 3 firebenders.
How many children will they adopt? - None. Azula is wary of motherhood and I know people like to hc Aang as adopting and while I can see him acting as a father figure to several kids I think he'd greatly prefer biological kids especially airbenders. It's a flaw that was barely touched upon and def not handled well in Legend of Korra.
Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - Servants or Aang. After a kid or two Azula would be comfortable enough to change the diapers but it would still be mostly Aang.
Who is the stricter parent? - Depends on the kid. Aang is more lenient with airbenders and Azula with firebenders or girls. I can see Azula being strict with training & studies but not with sharing whereas Aang would have less rules but they'd be more heavily enforced (ex: no airgliding without supervision until you've mastered the safety course)
Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - Azula. She's pretty lenient with the term dangerous esp. when it comes to firebending as long as basic safety measures are applied (ex: you can pracrice lightning as long as it's not pointed towards yourself aka dont be Zuzu) but Aang is of the mindset "How are you gonna learn airbending without dangerous stunts?" And after the first few incidents she started stepping in.
Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - Azula but Aang cooks them.
Who is the more loved parent? - Appa
Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? Azula. When Aang attends the teachers shower him and his kids with compliments ("You're doing so well teaching your kids the values of the Air Nomads. It must be so hard being The Last Airbender"). They do the same with Azula but unlike Aang she sees through it and manages to get an accurate assessment of how their kids are doing.
Who cried the most at graduation? - Aang was more happy than sad. Azula cried before and after.
Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - Aang. He is a notorious lawbreaker. Azula would bail the kids and she could do so quicker than Aang in a few cases because of her connections but she'd be mad so their kids would rather call Aang or break themselves out.
Cooking:
Who does the most cooking? - Tied. Aang at first but then Azula wants to learn and after Aang teaches her since she has less experience she finds more enjoyment in cooking.
Who is the most picky in their food choice? -
Technically Aang since he's a vegetarian. Azula hasn't tried as many foods and she's used to not making a fuss at the family dinner table to the point of which Aang notices.
Who does the grocery shopping? - Both. Aang has a better eye for vegetables/fruits and Azula is better with prices (it's not about the cost it's about the value).
How often do they bake desserts? - Aang bakes them when he can/weekly. They're fruit based so if Azula doesn't want dessert he gives it to Momo or flings it at a target.
Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Gee I wonder. Aang eats salad Azula eats meat.
Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - Aang but Azula tends to figures it out. Azula is more likely to plan a dinner but she wouldn't make it a surprise.
Who is more likely to suggest going out? - Aang but Azula is a close second. It would be a tie if it wasn't for the bathhouse.
Who is more likely to burn the house down accidently while cooking? - Accidentally? Aang. On purpose? Azula.
Who cleans the room? - Servants or Aang.
Chores:
Who is really against chores? - Azula hates cleaning up but she's neater.
Who cleans up after the pets? - Aang.
Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? - Aang.
Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? - Azula.
Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? - Aang.
Who takes the longer showers/baths? - Azula. In the Fire Nation Palace Aang has taken to chatting with Azula in the Royal Spa while he feeds her (and mostly himself) cherries.
Misc:
Who takes the dog Appa out for a walk? - Aang
How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? - Never. Once they like the room they like the room. If its an event they'll go to a different location for it or leave the Air Temple as is.
What are their goals for the relationship? -
To stay together.
Who is most likely to sleep till noon? -
Aang slept for a hundred years so I'll give it to him.
Who plays the most pranks? - Tie. They've both pulled elaborate pranks as kids.

hi. which of the character is most likely to be trans (in your opinion) and why? personally, I'm alternating between toph (nonbinary) and zuko (trans guy) but I'd love to hear your thoughts. (if you don't have thoughts you can also just answer in a shitposty way)
okay so just a disclaimer that we are both cis, so take these with a grain of salt, but here are some thoughts. i did run this post by a trans friend before posting.
smellerbee is a trans girl. this is pretty much canon, as we see her distress when iroh misgenders her and her relief when longshot reassures her afterwards
i like to think kyoshi is trans. she’s resilient in the face of intolerance and has a sense of resolve and inner strength that comes from dogged survival. the way she gravitates toward concealing her identity with face paint also suggests both a complicated relationship with femininity and a desire for privacy born out of hypervisibility. and we see in the rise of kyoshi that her appearance is often hurtfully remarked upon and used to single her out, even when she is a very young child
on a related note, it would be pretty rad if the kyoshi warriors were a group of trans girls, or at least mostly trans girls. certainly suki could be trans
aang could be nonbinary! i don’t think that’s controversial. see @gayavatarstyle’s iconic post where aang laughs in the face of gender like he laughs in the face of gravity (haha! ...gender)
aang and suki are the only members of the atla gaang who i can really see as trans, but damn if they’re not legends!
on the other hand, any of the LOK core four could be trans! this exchange comes to mind from last year when orianne and i were talking about it and i said korra and bolin could be trans at the EXACT same second that she responded “trans asami trans mako.” so there you go, all-trans friend group
Tumblr media
[ID: a whatsapp conversation between me and orianne, exactly as described above. we both reacted with amusement to saying opposite things at the same time. end ID]
jinora and kai, also both bi and trans, simply because they’re too cool and smart not to be
Tumblr media
[ID: a whatsapp conversation between me and orianne. i said “also trans jinora??” and orianne responded “DUH.” i said “Jinora is too genius to be cis” and orianne replied “She’s bi & trans and so is Kai DUH.” end ID]
finally, i’ve long had a trans headcanon for jeong jeong. specifically i think jeong jeong could be read as a trans woman who’s still working towards coming out. (to avoid confusion, and on the advice of a trans woman friend, i’m going to use they/them pronouns here, but to be clear i do think that the endpoint of my analysis is that jeong jeong would identify with she/her.) the first thing we learn about jeong jeong is that they were forced to serve in the fire nation military until they took a big stand by deserting. deserting, of course, is unthinkable to most fire nation citizens, and it’s made jeong jeong an outsider, but jeong jeong is an unusual citizen. so what does it say about them that they deserted? well, throughout the series, the fire nation’s objectives of conquest and imperialism are strongly linked to masculinity; we see this most clearly with zuko as he aspires to perform socially acceptable masculinity and struggles to find a relationship with masculinity that he can stomach. jeong jeong, too, rejects norms of masculinity, which is strikingly shown in contrast to aang--who is hardly a traditionally masculine character either. aang's haste to learn to control fire is understandable (sozin’s comet is a ticking clock, after all), but jeong jeong correctly observes that there is a degree of boyish carelessness and even arrogance to the way aang behaves in this episode and it puts everyone around them in danger. (incidentally, it’s very unusual for aang to act this way, and he pretty much never does it again, as his recklessness gets katara hurt and causes sokka to blow up at him. aang only needs to learn that lesson once.) and so aang and jeong jeong’s philosophies are contrasted. jeong jeong is advocating for patience and self-control, attributes that would have been critically important to, say, a closeted trans woman in a hypermasculine military culture. and aang’s behavior in this episode is then characterized as the more masculine tack for dealing with this subject, as he argues in favor of haste and reckless action. if aang is the more masculine operator in this interaction, then jeong jeong is the one whose behavior aligns with womanhood.  furthermore, it’s not just the fire nation that’s linked to masculinity through their actions. it’s the elements themselves, too. jeong jeong’s principles of strict emotional control are at odds with the sweeping, out-of-control nature of fire in the wrong hands. jeong jeong resents fire for this reason. it’s not in their nature to relinquish control, or to destroy. (i don’t think their distaste for the element could be solved by a meeting with the dragons, either, though it might have helped them to understand how some people can bear it.) and if the element of fire is often linked to masculinity, then water, its opposite, is often linked to femininity. we see by the episode’s end that jeong jeong has dedicated time to researching waterbenders and has a profound admiration for them. upon watching katara heal, jeong jeong even tells katara:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: two screenshots from "the deserter.” jeong jeong has just watched katara heal her burns from aang’s firebending. with a pained look, jeong jeong says “I’ve always wished I were blessed like you--free from this burning curse.” end ID]
this is a very telling exchange. jeong jeong is uncomfortable with fire and thinks of it as a curse, something they were born with but never wanted. fire pains them. they see how it consumes and destroys. they long for an association with water instead, something they view as healing and restorative. i also think it’s worth thinking about how waterbenders who can heal might be able to use their abilities to change the body, and why jeong jeong might be particularly wistful toward that gift. in watching this episode for the first time, it was instinctive for me to read this character as a trans woman. their aversion to the element they were born with and rejection of the hypermasculine culture they were expected to adhere to demonstrate a physical and emotional dysphoria. meanwhile, jeong jeong respects and admires a different, opposite way of life. and the stress they’re going through is really hard. while jeong jeong is a very kind and generous person, the pain of living a life they don’t want (and the expectation to teach the avatar how to bend an element they hate) is taking a toll. jeong jeong is depressed, anxious, and quick to anger. jeong jeong is in a dark place at this point in their life. but i hope that by the time the war is over and they’re reunited with their friends in the white lotus, they can begin to find themself and live the way they want to live.
so those are our trans headcanons! if anyone else wants to weigh in on any of these (especially trans people!), pls let us know <3
