as a resident bagel lover and therefore bagel expert, here is how the party eats their bagels. i'm right.

mike: toasted plain bagel with plain cream cheese. he likes what he likes even if it's basic. probably doesn't eat bagels that often but when he does he savors them.

lucas: toasted everything bagel with plain cream cheese. can be persuaded to have chive and onion cream cheese instead on occasion. max wipes the seeds off of his face because they get EVERYWHERE (i eat everything bagels a lot. i promise this is true)

dustin: okay so he's very very meticulous about spreading cream cheese. but the kicker is. he does not actually eat cream cheese on his bagels. he prefers them toasted with butter, which gets him some Looks but it's what he likes and he's happy with it. however, whenever the party (mainly max) is having issues spreading cream cheese, he is always happy to help and proportions the cream cheese EXACTLY RIGHT every time (he's so me)

max: bagel sandwiches all the way!!! egg and cheese on a bagel. sausage egg and cheese on a bagel. tomatoes and veggies and cream cheese on a bagel etc etc. do not make that girl eat open face bagels she WILL kill you

will: LOX EVERYTHING BAGELS (he's so me) with everything on them are his absolute favorite, but since he doesn't always have everything to make them in the house, he's fine w a toasted everything bagel with plain cream cheese and lox :) or just cream cheese. will is the Resident Bagel Enthusiast i think because he is just like me fr

el: untoasted bagels all the way for her (or VERY lightly toasted. but that's pushing it) with strawberry cream cheese. plain or sesame do just fine for this, but she also does like to indulge in the occasional cinnamon raisin bagel + strawberry cream cheese. she is the Resident Strawberry Cream Cheese Enthusiast. she loves it a lot

some stranger things headcanons(mostly ending up being ramblings bc im autistic)! feel sososo free to share yours with me or ask if i have any for a specific character! and shoutout to my bestie griffin for helping me come up with some of these

•max leaves like the most random shit in mikes locker. like he’ll open it and find like an origami armadillo or a piece of macaroni covered in glitter or like a singular fuzzy christmas sock. he has no idea its her(everyone else knows). he shows up to lunch every day with the item and gets more and more terrified every day.

•eddie has nicknames for all of the kids bc he loves them and hes alive and happy. he calls max ginger snap or little orphan annie or something along those lines and she acts pissed off but she loves it. he calls lucas number 8 bc even if he doesnt like basketball, he supports his kids in anything they do. dustin is just henderson ofc or the occasional like curly sue or smthn of that nature. he obvi calls erica lady applejack or miss america. he calls mike training wheel(nancy is steering wheel and holly is tricycle) or michael in the most ominous way possible. he calls will lil buddy or “sir william the wise, my lord” while doing the most dramatic curtsy ever, no in between. he calls el stupid shit like elton john or eleanor roosevelt and if hes greeting her he just asks her what number hes thinking of. i just love him and want him to be happy.

•el and mike are lesbian and gay solidarity argue with the wall. they were the first to find out about the other’s crush on max/will and they both encourage each other to go for it. el especially bc she hears how much will talks about mike. mike tries to get info from max but shes just like oh my god leave me alone(lovingly, ofc) with the reddest face ever and mike is like 🤔.

•max sees erica like a little sister and vice versa.

•will, robin, max, and eddie tell eachother all about their relationships/crushes and it ends in a nightmare every time. will told them about something really stupid mike said and eddie brought it up, laughing, at hellfire and mike was like “oh my god i fucked up so badly that will told eddie” and eddie tries to come up with another explanation like will wasnt the only other person there. “nonono, it wasnt will that told me! it was… nancy! she was… in the… bushes! for uhm……. newspaper stories???” and mike just thinks about it for the rest of the day

•idc abt canon they all go to lucas’s games and theyre huge dorks about it. they make signs and everything and then have a party at steves house regardless of whether they won or he even got to play. steve also helps lucas practice sometimes and is always like “go easy on me im old.”

•steve and robin worked a good few jobs in the months between the mall getting destroyed and the family video. they were there for maybe a week before one of them got fired(steve) and the other quit in protest bc theyre besties and share one braincell.

•lucas is a history kid, dustin and el are math kids, mike and max are english kids, and will is a science and art kid.

•steve hates his house because its always so lonely and he tells robin this like once in passing and she just shows up randomly with a duffel bag with her pjs and stuff. she probably has a key at this point so like he’ll get back from the shower or smthn and she’ll just be sitting on his bed watching tv like she lives there(she pretty much does), not that he minds obvi. he loves hanging out with her

•will and el are practically inseparable. they tell each other absolutely everything and have “sleepovers” once a week. when will realized that el doesnt know her birthday, he decided that they were gonna share his because everyone already jokingly calls them the wonder twins anyway. i literally just adore them and want more content with them.

•dustin and max will argue over the absolute dumbest stuff EVER. absolutely anything and everything. like max threatened to kill him over whether els shoes were mustard yellow or yellow-orange.

•mike acts like he hates steves guts when he finds out he likes eddie. like he’ll regularly be like “wow, you date my sister and now you’re going after my mentor.” and steve is just like “yeah, and ill go after your mom next. pipe down.”

•nancy and argyle vibe like no other and not a single person understands how. jonathan jokes that he cant believe his best friend would leave him for his ex and they all think its really funny.

•robin and steve cant spell restaurant or communicate or fairly simple words like that. they pass a singular braincell back and forth wand it probably belongs to nancy.

•steve taught all of the kids other than max how to drive. eddie taught max while steve had to like hold robins hand because of how nervous he was.

•dustin has zero rhythm(affectionate).

•el sat hopper down and asked him about his intentions with joyce like an overprotective dad when they got back from russia and always messes with him about the three inches rule.

•will gets along really well with nancy and holly. sometimes he’ll show up at the wheeler house and mikes pleasantly surprised to see him, thinking will there to see his bf but hes actually there for a tea party that holly invited him to or for his scheduled gossip session with nancy and probably steve, max, and el.

•el is an avid abba stan. she and will regularly end up having dance parties in her room when she plays it. argyle always joins in if hes over and jonathan does too, but not before he gets a couple of pictures bc he loves them a lot.

•eddie and robin smoke together on the occasion(they cried one time bc robin turned off the lights on accident and they were convinced they both went blind).

if i could chat with the duffers abt storytelling this is what i would nerd out with them about:

the narrative tension between will’s coded love confession and mike not realizing it yet is sooo juicy and well done because it wasn’t even an explicit love confession if will were to have said it in the first person. stay with me here.

“these past few months, i’ve been so lost without you”

“i need you, and i always will”

“i’m scared of losing you, just like you’re scared of losing me/el”

“you make me feel like i’m not a mistake at all… like i’m better for being different.”

deeply affectionate, definitely, but their friendship has always been like that. if will had just said it in the first person, mike wouldn’t have even thought of it as explicitly romantic tbh…

but it’s the fact that will coded his own feelings with el’s name, mike’s romantic partner, that is going to expose will in the end. and the fact that will brought it up as a solution to mike’s relationship problems and romantic insecurities. mike is going to have to contend with that part and that’s what will make it so satisfying.

the duffers used the circumstances, rather than the words, to code will’s confession and make it evident to the audience that truthfully, mike is most romantically fulfilled by will, as opposed to el.

they didn’t have will say “el loves you”—that would be boring. once mike found out about that, he would be like “oh okay, so will loves me?”

instead, they had will say “el needs you, misses you” etc. we as the audience filled in the blanks from the circumstances alone—that’s what mike is meant to do, too.

mike will not immediately realize “will loves me”—he will realize “will needs me, thinks highly of me, completes me”, and he will have to think critically about what that means for him. mike will have to piece together the ideas one by one—

i want to be needed, i need to be someone’s protector, i need someone who misses me like i miss them. will told me i was the one who saved him and that he needs me, and that makes me feel like i’m flying, so that means… 🤯

they also used mike’s uncomfortable monologue to show that mike returns will’s feelings, but doesn’t know it—and the awkwardness of the monologue, how terrified mike looks to say it as will urges him, the way they filmed mike with that super uncomfortable choke shot (shoutout to whoever first pointed this out on here, i don’t remember ur username!) and an ice-cold color palette is because he’s saying it to el, the wrong person for him.

(contrastingly—mike’s scenes w will this season have a very warm color palette. but in surfer boy pizza, he’s wearing blue, his face looks washed out, and he’s surrounded by metal.)

i see why the duffers did it this way now if endgame byler is what they want… bc will could have literally told mike that he loves him and wants to spend all his time with him, and mike would still take it platonically bc i honestly don’t think he’s ever considered the possibility that 2 boys could really be together.

but when the truth comes out with this context that will used his own feelings to sub in for el, who’s with mike romantically……..mike won’t be able to interpret it any other way. he will be forced to see what he needs to see.

so this was the duffers’ way to play with that tension between heteronormativity vs queer love, platonic vs romantic feelings, truth vs lies, love vs not-love, and make it narratively interesting (rather than it just being a short, cute moment with mild angst, the way i believe it would’ve been if will had simply confessed).

they had to put will’s feelings in a heteronormative package for it to get properly delivered to mike in a way that would register.

this entire “piggybacked” love confession and delectable back-and-forth between an unknowing mike and will was the duffers’ way of making byler seem like the most natural thing in the world amidst the homophobia and heteronormativity of the 1980s setting—and plenty of the GA.

i honestly cannot get over how much this scene from tfs

reminds me of terry stuck in her chair in st2

especially how much her dress is reminiscent of the sheet(?) over henry's lap, and arms in the same pose on the arms of the chair (yes, i know henry is tied down and that's the logical place to do it, but still). even the cuffs on her sweater are visually similar to that of the straps tying henry down

it took me a minute to connect the visual back to terry, but with the general context of the scene in question (brenner talking to henry about the kids in the lab, how he's been behaving well enough that he's now allowed to meet them, etc.) i was immediately looking at it like "this looks like a woman just coming out of a rough pregnancy/delivery who was barred from seeing the kids due to her acting out of sorts/unhealthily." and maybe it's just because of all of henward's mother coding (shoutout to mothergate and the post of all time by james) but with all the sa coding throughout tfs, the weirdness with henry's supposed relation to the lab kids, etc... i definitely feel like it's a connection we're meant to make

and while i don't have the full context from that tfs scene yet, james and em have also said that henry is way out of it in that whole sequence (and you can really tell in the still of him looking down at where brenner is touching him. he looks exhausted). which only further reminds me of terry, not just in the sense of her being involved in hnl drug programs and mkultra, but also her general state after she's been zapped (not to mention how terry has no real way to communicate other than these flashes of memories using her/el's powers, much like how atp henry has no real way to communicate the truth to anyone, including the audience, so we have to form our own conclusions based on the fragmented evidence we're given, but anyway)

which, speaking of...

sure, a ball gag and a bite block/mouth guard aren't exactly the same thing, but they could be used for similar purposes (in this case, to prevent biting. in the case of terry, to keep her from biting her own tongue. for henry? perhaps the same case, but likely also to prevent biting others if his arms are also strapped down)

and with the question of henry's relation to the lab kids/el specifically, it brings me back to the idea that el and jane might not be the same person at all and it was more of a mixup/el misunderstanding what terry showed her, etc. (which has been talked about countless times before by multiple people but i can't find the posts atm rip im so sorry)

and so if we're meant to make a connection between henry and terry with these visuals, plus with the whole "henry was being kept away from the kids for misbehaving" and "terry was punished for trying to find her child after she was taken from her" ... i feel like it's stupid to not draw a line between the two of them and reach the conclusion that henry fathered (or mothered) at least some of the lab kids. and to then see terry fight so hard to get jane back... only to be shown 001 (some version of henry) doing everything he can to save el as well?

anyway i can't remember where i was going with this post anymore lol. long story short, i think this new visual from tfs is just one more nail in the mothergate coffin, and henry definitely was used to breed more powerful kids, and the close tie to terry just makes me think that he really and truly fathered el

Various headcanons and plot beneath the cut

So starting with backstories:

Gerard was born into a wealthy family, and at a young age was kidnapped

Luckily he escaped, as he had always been a slippery little kid.

Unluckily, by that point his family had already had him publicly declared as dead, so no one believed him when he claimed to be Gerard Greenleigh

He lived on the streets for a while, and befriended Elody, and the two fell in love

It was only when he'd already grown into an adult that Gerard was able to prove his identity and gain access to the family fortune.

From there, familiar territory. He acted vain, petty, immature, etc., he and Elody separated, which brings us to when he adopted two kids

Ylfa is autistic, and she has particularly bad meltdowns and anger management issues. Her mother didn't handle her well and would frequently send her away to stay with Ylfa's grandmother

Eventually, she decided to just leave Ylfa there permanently

What she didn't know is that only a few days into this new arrangement, the grandmother would die of natural causes. Ylfa. Did not handle this well

She froze in place, not wanting to move forward. If she just didn't move, then she wouldn't have to deal with what came next. If she just stayed still, then there's a chance everything could go back to normal

Fortunately, Mr. Wolf the child welfare caseworker had already been looking for her as one of the mother's neighbors noticed the missing child

Unfortunately, it was still two days of her standing there, frozen and terrified, before he found her

The first thing Mr. Wolf did was take her to get some fast food, that she devoured ravenously

(She would throw up most of that food in the backseat of his car a few minutes later)

She ended up in the foster care system after that, as her mother was deemed unfit to parent her

(IDK how child welfare stuff actually works so I'm just taking my best guesses here. Apologies if I get anything wrong)

Pinocchio has chronic pain, and some days he can get by with a cane but other times he needs a wheelchair

His father was a loving, if demanding parent who, along with his kindergarten teacher, were very strict about morals and particularly lying

Eventually, a strange woman approaches him as he's about to walk home and she starts asking him increasingly personal questions about who his parent is, where he lives, how he gets home, etc.

Pinocchio cottons on that she's acting weird and lies, saying his dad will pick him up soon

Teacher Turquina hears this, and goes to give Pinocchio an earful about lying, telling the woman the truth

Geppetto goes missing soon after

Pinocchio is taken care of by his stepmother (his actual stepmother, in this AU), but eventually the way she's been emotionally and sometimes physically abusing him is noticed and he is put into the system

(The stepmother was particularly fond of locking Pinocchio in a closet for hours at a time. He still remembers the way it looked when she would open the door, the only light coming from behind her)

He has complicated feelings about his stuffed animals Spinocchio and Pinocchicrow, given the stepmother is the one who gave them to him. Eventually Pib mauls Pinocchicrow, and given how relieved Pinocchio seems, Gerard quietly moves Spinocchio into storage

Rosamund's backstory probably gets the most major overhaul

Rosamund was 16 and in love when she and her boyfriend (if you want to be particularly on the nose he could have the last name of briar or thorn or something) got into a bad car crash

She woke up from a coma 2 years later

Her boyfriend, who had been released from the hospital just a couple months after the accident, had already moved on, hence her current distaste for romance

Her parents tried to keep her inside all the time, obsessively overprotective after the accident, and she couldn't stand it

She eventually ran away, and given that Cousin Gerard has been one of the few tolerable people to be around (He had been kind and funny when she was growing up; after the accident he was empathetic in a way no one else was. It wasn't exactly the same, but he knew what it was like feeling like you've lost years of your life) and eventually she made her way to an address he'd written down for her saying if she ever needed to talk, she has an open invite

Her parents don't look for her under the belief that eventually she'll realize they were right all along and come home

(that isn't what happens)

Gerard was initially going to just take in Pinocchio, as he felt like since they'd shared experiences with kidnapping he could be helpful, and he could help Pinocchio deal with any issues the way he had

(He has not actually dealt with those issues)

Then he met Ylfa totally by accident, not at all arranged by Mr. Wolf in the hope that maybe this man would finally provide a home for two kids who so many felt were too high-maintenance to foster or adopt

So he ended up with two kids

Pib is a cat

He was originally a stray, taken in by Tomas, put in a shelter when Tomas died and then adopted by Timothy

Timothy has his husband, his menace of a son Jack, and inexplicable beef with a gander from the local park. He wants it dead, and the feeling is mutual

From here it's just general headcanons and little scenes

The non-Elody princesses are Rosamund's friends from an etiquette class that all of their terrible parents made them attend. None of them go to the class anymore but they still hang out

They are...maybe not the best influences. They regularly commit petty acts of vandalism and were maybe responsible for that time the school's library almost burned down

At some point one of Rosamund's friends/classmates says that Gerard is kind of hot in a pathetic way, and her first thought it "gross, that's my dad." She then has a minor crisis over when her goofy cousin became her dad

Gerard still exercises, but since it's his first time not working with a personal trainer he cannot figure out why he's getting stronger but not more "muscular." (not defined) Lifting more weight should be better, right?

This does mean he is strong enough to carry all three of his kids at the same time (because yes, Rosamund is his kid, even if not legally), and has carried them all to bed at once without waking them up before

Ylfa goes over the shoulders, as her grip is strong even asleep. Pinocchio is fully baby cradled in one arm, and Rosamund is carried in the other, her face tucked into this shoulder. Pib got Ylfa's back at some point without Gerard noticing, so actually it's three kids and a cat

Pib knows exactly one trick that he'll do on command, and that trick is "attack," where he runs up and smacks whoever without unsheathing his claws

For unknown reasons, he only does this trick for Gerard. Timothy is definitely not jealous

At one point Mr. Wolf was trying to talk to Pinocchio about setting goals and future careers, and Pinocchio panicked and said stand-up comedian

When Mr. Wolf tried to prompt him to set goals, he said he could come up with a good joke in a year. Mr. Wolf tried to hint that maybe that's a little too long. Pinocchio misunderstood and made it a year and a day

Pinocchio: I think that if I don't tell a good joke in a year and a day he's going to kill me

Ylfa, whose life was saved by Mr. Wolf and has known him for much longer: (100% earnestly) yeah, maybe.

Gerard tries to take the gang fishing. It goes badly. Gerard punches a fish

Ylfa has a dorky middle schooler crush on all of Rosamund's friends, especially Snow White. They think its cute and harmless enough not to discourage, much to Rosamund's chagrin

The princesses are also consistently accidentally mean to Gerard (a la "she's married?") They actually think he's a pretty good guy and by far the best parent any of them have, so they feel bad whenever it happens

Gerard does have minor Gilear energy in this au. Sorry bud.

Gerard and Elody's reuniting

For Elody and Gerard reuniting, IDK what leads to it but eventually Elody agrees to one date after starting to realize how much Gerard's changed

Gerard is very excited and spends nearly the entire day preparing for their dinner date

Unfortunately, the power goes out about midway through the day. At first it's kind of fun and everything's fine, date still set to happen

Then it gets dark and suddenly things aren't so fine anymore

Ylfa remembers the nights she stood, starving, staring at the body of her grandmother, trying desperately to pretend that nothing's changed, even as she becomes too dehydrated to cry

Pinocchio remembers that darkness of the closet, the silhouette of his stepmother, the way he could only ever catch glimpses of her sneering face as the door closed once again

Rosamund remembers the weeks of consciousness before she was able to even open her eyes, trapped in darkness by her own uncooperative body, aware yet unable to do anything, to save herself

Gerard might've asked Timothy to help out, but he'd left earlier that day to go on a camping trip with Henry and Jack, so it's up to Gerard to help his kids

So he does the one thing he's ever been good at. He tells them stories.

Some of them are old stories he's known since childhood, but some of them are new

He tells them stories of a brave little girl who was strong enough to survive despite everything, and a clever little boy who knows that sometimes you need to break the rules, and a bold princess who was able to free herself from the prison others had made for her

He does not tell them the story of a cowardly prince, too unlovable to be wanted by his parents or his wife, who has no one to blame for how things turned out but himself

Instead, his kids tell him a story

They tell him the story of a funny, smart, kind king who was beloved by all his subjects. Who never, ever got mad, and was super strong, and would accept any who would seek refuge in his kingdom. The three (four, counting Pib, who Timothy asked them to watch while they were gone) immediately decide it's their favorite

"How can that be your favorite story? That's barely a story at all, it just a list of character traits."

"Too bad, it's our favorite now, so we're gonna tell it every night."

They pass the night with stories and candles until eventually all his kids are happily asleep, and Gerard crashes onto his couch.

He, unfortunately, could not text Elody about this change of plans as his phone died before he could (his phone hasn't been fully charged since he got kids)

Elody shows up the next morning to be like "Why'd you ditch me and also are you still alive because I can't think of anything short of death that would've kept you from showing up"

She is greeted by a very tired Gerard in his pajamas, who asks if she wants to come inside for breakfast

Elody is very confused to be sitting around a table with three kids and a cat while her husband cooks breakfast (when did he learn how to cook?)

The neighbor pops in to say hi and ends up staying for breakfast as well, and Elody is quickly realizing just how much of a life Gerard has made since they separated

It's not a great breakfast. The eggs are kind of rubbery and the bacon is burnt on the edges, but it's far better than she ever imagined Gerard capable of

She...kind of wants to learn what else has changed about Gerard

She also wants to know when, where, and why he acquired these kids

Anyway, that's all I got. Maybe I'll make a continuation if I have any other ideas

Week in Review | Oct. 15

Hello and happy Sunday! Hope you had a good week. I had a weird one. It wasn’t bad by any means, but just kinda meh. Had some life stuff come up earlier in the week which kind of lingered. Needless to say, I was very much looking forward to the day off my husband and I had to celebrate our anniversary together. We ended the week on a high note, so I’m carrying those vibes into the week ahead.

Speaking of our day off, we took a behind-the-scenes tour of The Last of Us house at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal (Orlando, sadly not the park Pedro was at earlier this month 😞). We were complete nerds the whole time we were in the house. No one else on our tour seemed to be as interested in the house and the details as we were, but we asked a ton of questions and had fun.

Thank you to those who popped in with asks this week, those always make me smile. I had a lot of fun with some sweatpants content, Mule Falls Halloween, and TF vehicle choices.

Anyway, here we go with the rest of the post…

I didn’t read as much as I wanted to this week. There’s a ton on my TBR and it just keeps piling up (I can’t emphasize enough how good of a “problem” that is. This fandom and it’s creativity floors me. There’s just so much good stuff out there).

I Like the Way You by @undercoverpena - Frankie and his friend enter into a “friends with benefits” type of situation and I’ll be damned if it’s not going to turn into something more. I love the way Jo writes, so I am all here for the journey she’s going to take us on.

@frenchiereading posted a little extra piece from her Mr. and Miss Universe. If you haven’t read the Shared Breaths series, I highly recommend it. Her latest drabble is a cute, fluffy piece with so much dad Frankie!

Ring Toss by @morallyinept…Jett. I was already sweating when I saw donuts thanks to @secretelephanttattoo and her Marcus, but ugh now Frankie?! This was so so good. Bravo!

Salty & Sweet by @secretelephanttattoo - It’s El’s Marcus, so I was already in before I even read the first sentence. I don’t want to spoil too much of this one, but I have to say it’s the most unique story structure I’ve read in a long time.

Destiny & Deliverance by @mysterious-moonstruck-musings Misty….sigh. This latest chapter was something. While the themes can be heavy, they’re always done so well and this just always feels so real. I could go on and on about this.

Tip Your Server by @nothoughtsjustmeds Dieter loses his Oscar. It is such a cute story with an established relationship.

My girl @trulybetty keeps hitting it out of the park with her Autumnal Offerings series. I read one of her entries and think, “This is my favorite one so far” and then the next day comes and she one-ups herself. I am a little biased with one of them this week, though. Cornfields with Sequins!Joel was so good and I’m not biased absolutely at all 😉 When Betty popped into my DMs with a series of random questions for me to answer I had no idea how it would all come to life and I am obsessed.

The Catfish Ph.D. program (helmed by esteemed professor @legendary-pink-dot) is in full swing, but it’s not too late to join in the fun. I don’t quite know exactly how to pull this off, but I think it would be fun to try and get a group watch party set up to watch Triple Frontier … you know … for research. I know a lot of us are spread out across the world (which is so cool!), so finding a time to suit everyone may not be super realistic, but I’m just putting that out into the universe.

Things I watched:

I didn’t really watch a lot this week. I did manage to go to the movies to see Dumb Money. I didn’t realize the theater was going to be overrun by Swifties - no shade, I just literally didn’t know that her movie came out this week and was shocked by the crowds.

Things I'm excited for:

Anyways, Dumb Money is about the GameStop short squeeze that happened in 2021 led by a man who had a YouTube channel and a popular Reddit account. Now, friends, I’ll confess something here. The only reason I made a point to see this was because my boo Sebastian Stan is in this movie. Now, is he in this for like a total of 10 minutes? Sure, but those were a great 10 minutes to see him on screen. Aside from that, it was actually an interesting story and I enjoyed it!

Mr. Rhoorl and I are heading back to…you guessed it…Halloween Horror Nights again tonight! We only have a couple of weekends left, so we’re trying to take advantage of our passes. Other than that, we don’t really have anything else planned for the week since all of our big October celebrations have passed.

Fic updates:

Quiet on the fic front this week. My mood early on in the week coupled with some writer’s block didn’t help things. But, later in the week, I had a bit of a burst of creativity. I’ve made decent progress on the next chapters of Working Title and Delta Landscaping. I’m hoping to get both of those out early on in the week. I am also going to be doing a part two for Turbulence soon…if you know, you know. 😉

Set Me Free Pt.2: on Mazes, Lies and Setting Yourself Free

Jimin’s journey from Lie to Set Me Free Pt.2

Anchored in BTS’s Discography

Set Me Free Pt.2 is anchored in BTS’ discography firstly because of the title itself: a nod to, as well as a continuation of sorts of Agust D’s Set Me Free. In Jimin’s words:

There isn’t a connection, and we weren’t trying to divide part one or part two. But since it turns out my song talks about freedom and moving forward, and SUGA’s song talks about some of the stories that come before, I thought it would be good to come after that.

Just like BTS’ Airplane Pt.2 is linked to J-Hope’s solo track Airplane, Jimin’s Set Me Free Pt.2 is linked to Agust D’s Set Me Free.

Next up comes the maze. Set Me Free Pt.2 uses the metaphor of the maze twice:

In the first verse:

I wandered into a maze

And in the second verse:

Still in a maze.

The metaphor of the maze is scattered across BTS’s discography:

Without forgetting the song Love Maze itself! Jimin’s maze lyrics in this song:

Trapped in a maze of decisions Exhausted by all the different chaos We’ve wandered around, looking for the answer Lost in the maze, in the darkness

We love a motif that keeps popping up throughout various songs. It creates strength to the overarching storytelling of an artist and instantly brings meaning without having to go into detail each time. (See this post which talks a lot more eloquently about BTS motifs across their albums!) I love that Jimin ties his solo song into the BTS maze motif by bringing the maze in his own way. Not only does it create links between this solo song and BTS songs, but it also means army immediately knows the maze means difficulty. Indeed, the metaphor of the maze signifies darkness, being lost, going through hardships, etc. It can be nuanced in different ways depending on the context. (This powerful metaphor has not been lost on other k-pop artists. See for example Stray Kids’ Miroh (miroh, 미로, meaning “maze” in Korean) and Maze of Memories, TXT’s Maze in the Mirror, and (G)-IDLE’S Maze.) The maze in Set Me Free Pt.2 signifies hardships too. Jimin said the song wanted to express the ideas of “determination, passion, and overcoming”, and the maze represents the hardships that required determination and passion to overcome.

BTS explored darkness, hardships and overcoming them extensively throughout their discography, most recently and impressively through ON. This song has similar vibes to Set Me Free Pt.2, confirmed by Park Jimin himself: “I think you can feel the same vibe watching the “ON” performance as you will watching this performance. You’ll feel that feeling once again.” There is also clearly a shoutout to ON’s “Gotta go insane to stay sane” lyrics in Set Me Free Pt.2′s “Going insane to stay sane” lyrics. Parallels between ON/other BTS songs talking about overcoming hardships and Set Me Free Pt.2 are clear.

(Sidenote: see RM’s El País interview in which he talks about why overstraining/“working fucking hard” is such an important theme within k-pop/Korean culture.)

Darkness was also very much explored in Suga’s Interlude: Shadow. I can’t help but think that the voice distortions in Set Me Free Pt.2′s second verse may be a reference to Shadow’s third verse, which contain similar voice distortions.

The voice distortions in Set Me Free Pt. 2 come when Jimin is talking about hardships:

I got feel low Still in a maze But I got no time to break soul Just let me flow Hey fool, just get out of my way Shut up, fuck off I'm on my way

These are the darkest lyrics of the song imo. They show the darkness, dare I say the shadow, that Jimin has lived with and through. When Jimin addresses the “fool,” he could be speaking to his shadow, to his own self-doubts. The voice distortion accentuates the fact that he is talking about darkness, a dark side of himself.

Suga’s biggest voice distortions in Interlude: Shadow appear over these lyrics:

Yeah I'm you, you are me, now do you know Yeah you are me, I'm you, now you do know We are one body, sometimes we will clash You can never break me off, this you must know Yeah yeah can't break me off, whatever you do Yeah you'll be at ease if you admit it too Yeah succeed or fail, whichever way you flow Yeah you can't escape, wherever you go

This is also the darkest part of the song. Rather than talking to his shadow like Jimin, Suga is speaking from his shadow’s perspective. He is talking about how it’s impossible to escape his shadow always being part of him. Suga’s shadow is greed and ambition, whereas Jimin’s may be more akin to self-doubt, a self-doubt that has made him pretend to be someone else. This would explain why it would seem that while Suga is trying to accept living with his shadow alongside him, Jimin is working on setting himself free from his shadow.

I might be making parallels where no parallels need to be made. Playing with voices is common in the music industry in general, and very much in k-pop too. At the same time, both Set Me Free Pt.2 and Interlude: Shadow have both Pdogg and Ghstloop as songwriters and Ghstloop as a producer. And I think it’s interesting to think of discussions with one’s demons as being highlighted by voice distortions.

Lie, Set Me Free Pt.2 and Jimin

I cannot help but interpret Set Me Free Pt.2 as being linked to Lie. Musically, they both have a grand orchestral feel. Meaning-wise, they seem very linked as well.

Lie is all about the suffering that comes with having to live a lie. Here are the lyrics of the chorus, as a quick refresher:

Caught in a lie Find the me that was pure I can’t be free from this lie Give me back my smile Caught in a lie Pull me from this hell I can’t be free from this pain Save me, I am being punished

The lie in question is not specified and is left up to interpretation, which is amazing. Lots of people can find themselves in the lyrics in various ways.

At the same time, thinking about Jimin, the first thing that comes to my mind is this quote of his from this video when he talks about/to his younger self:

I think I wanted to appear like a strong man. Now... I don’t have to pretend. I can just be myself. Talk about myself without pretending anything. I realised that I was such an aspiring person and I realised how I’ve become better. I don’t look like I’m about to weep anymore. I don’t. That’s the difference as per my appearance goes. You were trying very hard. I was impressed and moved by you. I could feel how hard you were trying. I mean... Your eyes looked eager to show something. I felt somewhat sorry for you too. I was shocked a bit. Hurry up and be me soon. You will learn and realise so many things. Fighting.

The lie may indeed have been about him not being himself, him trying, pretending to be someone else, a “strong man”. This is something he has overcome, and Jimin affirms that he now feels free to be himself without having to pretend. With this in mind, let’s have a look at some of Set Me Free Pt.2′s lyrics:

Ah, yeah, ah, yeah I'm standing at the edge Not yet, not yet I won't look back Now yeah, now yeah Fly away, butterfly-y-y Finally free-e-e Look at me now (Me now) I won't hide anymore, even if it hurts Going insane to stay sane Raise your hands for the past me Now, set me free-e-e

Tears in my eyes at “Finally free”, “I won’t hide anymore” and “Raise your hands for the past me” (especially as in the MV Jimin is actually raising his hand while he sings this).

To me, one interpretation of the song is definitely about setting yourself free from the expectations you have bound yourself to (bearing in mind that these expectations are very often hammered into you by society). Setting yourself free from pretending to be someone else, from hiding yourself, from being blocked in your own prison, your own lie. Jimin has very much done this, as he clearly feels a lot more comfortable with allowing himself to be who he wants to be compared to the first years after debut. (I highly recommend reading these two excellent posts that go into great detail about this about how Jimin is the personification of the whole Love Yourself concept: “Jimin and his Journey with Gender Presentation” and “Jimin and his Journey with Food and Body Image”.)

The journey from Lie to Set Me Free Pt.2 is striking. In Lie, Jimin cannot seem to be able to escape the lie. He is crying for outside help, unable to save himself. “Pull me from this hell,” “Save me, I am being punished.”

In Set Me Free Pt.2, he has agency, and he has overcome his hardships himself.

Finally free Look at me now I won’t stop, even if they mock me.

Jimin has said that that’s what the song is all about:

“Set me free” means setting myself free, so I thought it was important that I be the one to set myself free — not someone else. In the end, I’m the one who has to set myself free.

The MV visually shows that he has set himself free as he ends up in an all-white outfit after having been in a black (and somewhat naked) outfit up until the end of the video.

Visually representing a light in the darkness, as he said is this song’s energy:

I would say the song has the energy of a light in the darkness. I wanted to express that kind of picture everyone has in their head — a ray of light coming into the darkness is the only thing you can see. If I had to say specific colors, I’d say black and white.

It’s one hell of a powerful message. That we can set ourselves free on our own, no matter the darkness of the maze, of our shadow. That in fact, we are the only ones who can set ourselves free. I don’t have the words to express how inspiring it is, how much of a privilege it is, to watch Jimin express this in such a musically and visually striking way as Set Me Free Pt.2.

In conclusion, Jimin places the song firmly in BTS’s discography by using the motif of the maze, talking about similar themes (overcoming hardships) and referencing ON and Interlude: Shadow (maybe). At the same time, the song is uniquely his at it is very personal to his own journey of setting himself free from hiding and pretending to be someone else.

Hi thank you!! that means a lot. and thanks for indulging me.

For DPDF, the whole origin of the fic was surviving a series of really bad friend breakups that affected me more than anything else in my life and really shaped my worldview, and Ixchel often grapples with similar things. DPDF is very much about depression and isolation inextricably, from different angles.

Beyond individual relationships it keeps popping up in the form of "inspiration" as I think a lot about being mixed race, about being second generation, about clawing my way to positions of leadership and privilege and how best to open doors and empower my peers and those who come after me, about being both afforded privilege but also being marginalized in those spaces too, about building community and coalitions... They're just really central to a lot of my daily existence and the spaces I move in and there aren't clear answers or narratives so I like to write them when I can. And imagining the world as I wish it could be, where sometimes just saying "it shouldn't be this way" loudly enough will give people pause, is important work to keep me hopeful and motivated to live and do the hard work in my relationships and communities.

On more fun notes, some of my biggest inspirations:

These songs make me incredibly emotional, they all have a lot of personal meaning to me about friendships that I've had and lost, and they also have directly inspired a lot of ixchel's relationships with the people closest to her. just listening to agnes these days is enough to make me cry my eyes out.

The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper) (shoutout: golden owl eyes)

Song of the Lioness (Tamora Pierce) (man. really complicated and nuanced friendships and interpersonal relationships.)

A version of the Robin Hood story whose author I don't know :(

El Cid

The Bartimaeus Trilogy (Jonathan Stroud)

Specifically themes relating to loyalty, chivalry, doing what's right even when it means you lose or life is harder or it's lonely.

Honorable mentions to Peaky Blinders, Pacific Rim, all the Studio Ghibli films (especially Spirited Away).

But also a lot of fanfics I read growing up were really formative.

Elecktrum's Chronicles of Narnia fanfics, and Tonzura123's Chronicles of Narnia fanfics, were especially impactful with how they treated platonic devotion and loyalty.

** a note about agnes

this was originally in the youtube description but I think Dave removed it. But it means a lot to me so I'm copying it here:

dear friends…nervously excited to share with you the video for Agnes. it’s hard to explain exactly how it feels inside a human centrifuge. you sit in a small egg-like pod about the size of a horse which hangs off a 50 foot steel horizontal frame. It looks like something out of a bond villain’s lair. it’s claustrophobic and uncomfortable and also incredibly hot. slowly the whole thing starts to rotate like a helicopter blade. Faster and faster until every part of you becomes crushed under the extreme gravity. its like being slowly sat on by an elephant, or like your whole body being punched in slow motion. you have to flex every muscle and use every ounce of strength you have to keep going. breathing requires serious effort. movement becomes incredibly strained and almost painful. everything that once weighed 5 kilograms now weighs 50. its difficult even to keep your eyes open. it hurts in places you really didn’t know existed. veins and capillaries burst under the pressure and bruising begins. its a rapid physical overdrive. the blood rushes from your brain making it impossible to think rationally or focus. your eyes are also drained and you get tunnel vision…only able to see small circles of the world directly infront of you and your sight goes completely greyscale…no more colour. your balance and spatial awareness goes and the world begins to spin like you’ve had way too much to drink. but the most striking thing is the way that the machine pulls on your heart. you can actually feel it struggling to beat and changing shape…flattening inside of your chest. Its similar to that horrible sinking, tugging heartache that comes only with complete and overwhelming sadness. and then you pass out. we ran the centrifuge 18 times while i tried to sing along to a song which i find difficult to listen to at the best of times. this was probably the most intense video-making experience I’ll ever have. But its the only way that we could just about begin to simulate for a moment what happens within Agnes. speak soon, dave

hiiii anon its been. so insanely long since ive thought abt lucky luke and the daltons rotated them in my small brain but i love looove them as a characters so very dearly to this day and id be more than happy to give u. some of my carefully thought out (brainrot induced) thoughts :]

- JOE ADHD KING. no but seriously this fucking guy is so nd and mentally ill in so many ways. hes collecting them like cool rocks (<- im nd and mentally ill (obviously) and have always related to him)

- i know the entire thing abt the daltons is how theyre only distinguished from each other when it comes to height but i love playing around w the idea that they have like. subtle differences in their appearance that you wont notice unless you squint and use a telescope. like william having heterochromia, jack having freckles and joe having beauty marks and whatnot (cant think of anything for averell when it comes to this trope sorry </3)

- aroacespec gay lucky luke is so real and true and my alltime fave sexuality hc. also a little transgenderism for him as a treat. sometimes

- adding to the former: luke telling ppl he got his diy top surgery scars from a brutal shootout

- i dont like the modern daltons cartoon (it kinda sucks) but i really really like how they characterized william in it (bookworm and man of many talents iirc) and i really like the idea of him potentially being a graduate/of higher education but sticking with his brothers out of loyalty/peer pressure (<- potential for him to be the black sheep of his family and give him more character than in the comics and the old cartoons)

- luke and joe's archnemesis relationship oh my GOD [head in hands] ive always loved the multiple layers of their dynamic and the "cool hero who loves toying with the bad guy" vs "batshit crazy unhinged small guy villain" thing they always got going on. lukejoe is so good whether its platonically or romantically or anything in between i still care them so much. funny guys who hate each other fight each other are friends are besties are outlaws kiss kill each other have repressed homosexual feelings have never had friends before killed people with no remorse and have issues. i like that in men

Here's a small list of little tidbits about Vox:

Vox uses "facilitator" in place of "mercenary" as she feels there's a negative connotation to the latter term. She considers herself someone who facilitates others' goals, whether it's elimination, klep'ing, or gathering intelligence. It feels more like business to her that way, which is important when taking on clients. I got some inspiration for this one from Muamar Reyes. Shoutout to my favorite fixer.

Misty and Vox go halfsies on a little fund for feeding the stray cats in the alley between the Esoterica and Vik's. They keep a jar of spare eddies under the counter and (try to) take turns being the one to run to the store for more kibble- it’s usually Misty who does it.

Vox's parents named her so in reference to the term "vox populi". Selene is after Tejana music star Selena Quintanilla, which her parents both loved.

As far as her last name, I just think monsteras are neat. It also just happens to have ‘monster’ in it which is also cool.

Her first time on a motorcycle was riding Jackie's bike. He was shocked she'd never ridden before and took her cruising along the coast. She's been in love with riding since then and exclusively uses the ARCH Jackie left her.

Though she prefers to communicate in English, Vox is fully bilingual and speaks fluent Spanish. She learned from El Padre, who made it a rule in his home to only speak Spanish while she was growing up. To this day she exclaims in Spanish sometimes and prefers using Spanish terms of endearment when she loves someone.

She only has a gorilla arm on the left because her right is her dominant and she enjoys the feeling of her flesh fist making contact with someone's body/face.

Vox never smoked cigarettes before Johnny. As a boxer, her cardio is incredibly important to her so cigarettes have always been out of the question. She has, however, smoked weed and still does occasionally.

Despite hating the idea of fame, there's a small part of Vox that wishes people will always remember her name.

❧ both are also very regal and elaborate, suitable for a king

Levy

❧ left: blue robin hood sword with a deep etched blade, retailed at $325

❧ right: excalibur with a gold enamel and blue fillings, retailed at $350

❧ both swords have blue, which matches his aesthetic

❧ both swords also have historical value, and i think levy would be very interested or even inspired by the legends of robin hood and the sword in the stone

Mefy

❧ left: 46 inch gold barbarian sword with a deep green gem on the pommel and depictions of goat heads and a winged scaly creature, retailed at $315

❧ right: celtic sword with a circular pommel and depictions of what appears to be a serpent, retailed at $175

❧ the one on the left has a green gem which obviously reminded me of him, and the rest of the design choices suit his vibe

❧ kaim would definitely have either a colada or rapier of some sort, the crossguards just suit his style

❧ both weapons have a silvery/metallic finish to them, which reminds me of silverware, and i could see him polishing these swords

❧ left: knights templar black temple master sword with a deep etched blade, retailed at $300

❧ right: 49 inch merlin the magician sword with orb pommel, retailed at $450

❧ both of these were kinda a long shot, but for the templar, i could see mikael enjoying their history and overall aesthetic

❧ the merlin sword has a very magical and intimidating, yet angelic image that suits mikael quite well

Ricardo

❧ left: lionheart sword of king richard with black leather scabbard and belt, retailed at $480

❧ right: black and gold conan the barbarian sword with hidden dagger in the pommel, retailed at $325

❧ king richard's sword is black and leather, what else could scream ricardo louder than this? the lion head pommel is a huge plus

❧ this barbarian sword is similar to mefy's, only more gaudy and with a secret weapon hidden at the top for close range action

Noel

❧ left: 23 inch knights templar brown short sword, retailed at $75

❧ middle: small viking dagger with a rounded blade, retailed at $75

❧ right: 10 inch silver bodice scissors with red gems and scabbard, retailed at $35

❧ noel isn't one to carry large weapon; with him being an assassin, he'd need something small, unnoticeable, and easy to transport

❧ the templar sword and viking dagger are simple and small, while still being tastefully decorative enough to match his aesthetic

❧ the scissors are just a shoutout to him being a hair stylist lol

Lucas

❧ left: roman gladius of julius caesar with wooden grip, retailed at $285

❧ right: gold secret love dagger with wooden grip and locket pommel, retailed at $145

❧ the simplistic yet elegant craftsmanship along with the gold and wood combinations scream lucas' aesthetic

❧ the different style of a gladius and the secret of the dagger match lucas nicely in that there's just something that sets him apart from the others
