[ID: A screenshot of a tumblr direct message from @hal-your-pal that says: "Can I kiss you?" + Zukka (smiling emoji)" End ID]
On his bed, surrounded by a sea of tissues and several warm blankets, Sokka slips in and out of consciousness.
He should be sweating and kicking the covers off, but he's shivering, unable to draw the blankets close enough. A comforting weight beneath his neck reminds him that he's using Zuko's lap as a pillow.
Sokka groans and rubs his eyes with his palms, knowing it won't alleviate the pressure elevating in his head. Sokka's shaking arms disappear beneath the blankets again as he finally opens his eyes.
He wonders how long Zuko's been watching him with his unmoving hand over Sokka's heart, monitoring his heartbeat, keeping close watch.
Though his face hurts, Sokka smiles at him weakly. "Hey, you," he murmurs, voice husky and worn.
"Hi," Zuko whispers, and slides his hand from Sokka's chest to his jaw. Careful fingertips feather along his jawbone, and Sokka's shivering harder. "Still feeling bad?" Zuko asks, though Sokka knows he's aware of the answer.
Sokka nods miserably. Zuko leans forward press a slow kiss into Sokka's forehead, then touches it with his own for a moment. When he sits up, he sadly confirms, "You're still burning up."
Sokka manages a half-smile and hoarsely whispers, "Feel like shit," in affirmation.
Zuko shakes his head and covers Sokka's cheek with his palm. "My poor baby," he anguishes. Zuko's voice is so tender, it has Sokka's heart beating too quickly, so he averts his gaze by turning his head to the side and resting his cheek against Zuko's thigh.
Sokka winces at the position change— maybe looking sideways isn't such a good idea. After a few heavy blinks, he turns his head back to Zuko, but keeps his eyes turned downward.
"Hey," Zuko whispers, guiding Sokka's gaze up. "Can I kiss you?" he asks with a quiet sort of wonder, as if Sokka granting his request will repair every wrong in the world.
Sokka shakes his head, inciting another wave of nasuea. "I'm sick," he croaks in protest, but Zuko's expression doesn't change.
"I know," he says immediately. Then, hardly above a whisper, "Can I kiss you anyway?"
Sokka’s attempt to disguise his smile is poor. "You're stupid, you know that?" Sokka asks, and when Zuko laughs, he maintains, “Seriously. Only a complete idiot would kiss someone knowing it’ll probably make them sick.”
Zuko shakes his head and smirks mercilessly. “Then I guess I’m a complete idiot,” he shrugs. His thumb glides along Sokka’s forehead to his cheekbone, then across the bump of his nose. It lands on Sokka’s chin and stays there.
Even though he’s sick, Sokka manages to bolster a flirtatious look. “I’m sorry you had to find out this way,” Sokka teases, earning an eye roll.
Ignoring him, Zuko asks, "So, can I?" while prodding Sokka's lower lip. "Can I kiss you?" he asks, then repeats, “Can I?” several more times, reminding Sokka of a petulant child.
After shooing Zuko's incessant finger away, Sokka grumbles, "Why are you even asking?" He shuts his eyes and puts on a satirically withered voice, "I'm too deathly ill to stop you."
“Hey,” Zuko says, suddenly stern. Sokka peeks his eyes open and to Zuko’s serious expression. “I’d never kiss you if you didn’t want me to.”
Sokka heaves a fond sigh. He insists, “I always want you—” but it’s cut short by a hacking cough.
In order to breathe easier, Sokka begrudgingly sits up from Zuko’s lap to cough into his arm. Zuko pats his back a couple times as Sokka fights through the worst of it, and when his breathing finally levels into ragged wheezes, Zuko’s arms circle his shoulders.
Zuko pouts at him, then nuzzles his forehead against Sokka’s cheek. “I’m sorry, sunshine,” he whispers, nearly sending Sokka into another coughing fit. Sokka leans into the touch and reaches around to ruffle his fingers through a mass of messy hair.
“Don’t be,” Sokka rasps, then giggles at the unexpected sensation of Zuko’s lips on his neck. “What do you think you’re doing?” he asks as Zuko trails kisses all the way to the corner of his jaw.
“I just think,” Zuko whispers near Sokka’s ear, causing the hairs on the back of his neck to rise, “if we’ve already been breathing in the same air, I’m bound to catch it anyway.”
As Sokka breathes a gentle laugh, his fingers travel the short distance from Zuko’s hair to his cheek to cradle it tenderly in his palm. Zuko asks, “What’s the harm in a little kiss?” intentionally brushing his lips against Sokka’s ear as he does.
When Sokka turns to properly face Zuko, his arms fall to Sokka’s waist. “Maybe you’re not that stupid,” he observes.
Zuko seems like he's about to say something, but stops himself and puts on a pout instead. "Are you telling me you wouldn't kiss me if I was sick?" he asks, feigning disappointment.
Sokka's answer of, "No," is instant and honest. "But I already know I'm an idiot," he adds.
Before Zuko can do more than scoff, Sokka kisses him.
Zuko's holding his head firmly in place, and Sokka keeps his eyes open partially to ward off any further dizziness, but mostly to watch the protective, concentrated look on Zuko's face. The kiss is short-lived, then Sokka's hugging his ribcage with his hot face buried in his neck.
Zuko relaxes them both onto the pillows, and though Sokka's body half on top of him and the excessive amount of blankets is probably uncomfortable, Zuko doesn't say a word. He just releases Sokka's hair from its hold to brush through the locks still damp from a last effort bath he took hours before.
Sokka's eyes drift closed when Zuko's fingers begin pressing lightly into his scalp. They're silent for so long, it almost startles him when Zuko proclaims, "You're not an idiot, you know," in a sudden, annoyed tone, like he just remembered Sokka said that.
Sokka's nose scrunches up and he's breathing a laugh into Zuko's neck. "For you I am," he replies, and uses all his strength to tighten his grip around Zuko.
Zuko takes his lead and releases Sokka's hair to draw him closer around his shoulders. Sokka isn't sure which of them tangles their legs together first, but everything feels right, somehow (though he could do without the incapacitating illness).
"Go to sleep," Zuko murmurs at some point when Sokka is still awake. Sokka mumbles an agreement. "I love you, stupid," he whispers, and it drags a final, groggy laugh from Sokka.
Without opening his eyes, Sokka plants a grateful kiss on Zuko's jaw, then resumes his resting place once more. "Love you, too, baby," he says, punctuated by a yawn.
As sleep inches over him, Sokka listens to Zuko's even breathing contrasting his own shallow, whistling breaths. For a moment, Sokka no longer feels pain, only Zuko, shrouded around him like honeyed sunlight.
Sokka wonders if maybe he'll feel better when he wakes. His final coherent thought before falling into a fever dream is a vow: If Zuko does get sick, I'll be the dumbass right by his side, ready to do it all over again.

Eyes blinking open, Y/n slowly came too. Her vision was blurry, and her head was pounding. Faintly, she could hear someone talking, but her head was too fuzzy to make out who it was and what they were saying. Her vision clearing, she could see a rocky ceiling, which seemed… odd. Was she in a cave?
When she tried to sit up, she found that she couldn’t move. Her arms were trapped against her sides, and her legs were bound together. Groaning quietly, Y/n twisted onto her side. Aang was on the ground a few feet away from her, hands bound behind his back. He didn’t seem… present.
Observing the situation more, she noted the figure that stood at the entrance to what she was assuming was a cave. They were still talking, and her head was finally clear enough to make out what they were saying.
“I don’t need luck though, I don’t want it. I’ve always had to struggle and fight and that’s made me strong. It’s made me who I am.”
Struggling weakly against her bindings, Y/n furrowed her eyebrows together. “..Zuko..?”
His head turned to the side slightly, an acknowledgement that she was awake, but he didn’t turn to face her. “Don’t bother trying to get free, I’ll just knock you out again.” He paused for a short moment. “Sorry about that, I just.. I knew you wouldn’t give up. You never have.”
Zuko had… taken her too. Why…?
Grunting, she continued to struggle against the rope, stopping only when Zuko rested his hand on her arm. “What did I just say? Did I knock you in the head that hard?” Sighing, Zuko settled on the ground next to her. “I’d prefer if you didn’t make me knock you out again. You probably think otherwise but I don’t want to hurt you.”
Opting to stay silent, she shuffled in place. He watched her carefully, before awkwardly looking about once she stopped moving. He took in a deep breath, when she started shuffling again. “Are you.. uncomfortable?” Being met with silence, Zuko glanced at Y/n to see she was looking at him with a blank expression. “I can sit you up, if you want.”
Not receiving an answer once again, he let out an annoyed breath. “Conversations usually go both ways, Y/n.”
Still, she looked at him blankly. “I don’t think people typically converse with their captors, Zuko.”
“Well, we used to be friends!” Crossing his arms with a huff, Zuko slumped against the cave wall. “I guess the key phrase is ‘used to be’, isn’t it?” He clicked his tongue, before breathing out a sigh. “I didn’t capture you to turn you in, we could… still be friends.”
Y/n took on a pensive expression. “Then why..?”
“Why did I capture you..?” Receiving a nod of confirmation, Zuko shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t… I don’t know.”
“You don’t… know..?”
“No! Okay?! I just-” Breathing out another annoyed breath, he dropped his head into his hands. “Why? Why did you leave? I thought… I thought we had each other's backs and… and you just up and leave?! Just like that?! No explanation, no nothing!? So why?!” Continuing to stay silent, Y/n grimaced internally at the rise in Zuko’s volume. The more he spoke, the louder he got. It was almost hard to imagine that this was the boy she grew up with.
Zuko scoffed, shaking his head slightly. “Fine then. It doesn’t matter anyways- You’ve chosen your path.” He let out a laugh, one edging on hysterical. “You know, I thought maybe I could sit here and convince you to come back, but I can see that isn’t going to work… The Avatar and his friends have won your favor.” He was silent for a moment, seemingly calming down from his outburst. “Uncle told me that I shouldn’t be mad at you, that I should respect your decision to find your own path. How can I do that when your so-called path is going against me?”
Before Zuko could continue, Aang came too, returning from the spirit world. Attention turned to the boy, when he started to struggle against his bonds. After a short moment of futile struggle, he sat up to face Zuko.
“Welcome back.”
“Good to be back.” Aang spoke with a threatening tone, blinding reaching around with his hands- which were tied behind his back -to try and find Y/n’s wrist. Once he was able to grab onto her wrist, he took in a deep breath and blew Zuko away from them while simultaneously shooting both him and Y/n out of the cave. The two landed in the snow outside, where Aang started to caterpillar crawl.
It didn’t take long for Zuko to get to them, grabbing Aang by the collar and lifting him in the air once he did. “That won’t be enough to escape.”
Suddenly, Appa appeared above them, before landing on the ground. Y/n breathed out a sigh of relief. Katara got off the bison, as Zuko dropped Aang back into the snow. “Here for a rematch?”
“Trust me, Zuko, it’s not going to be much of a match.”
Katara blocked a fireball Zuko shot at her, sending a wave of ice towards him. Once the ice reached him, she encased him in a pillar of ice that she raised high from the ground. When she dropped him, he fell to the ground unconscious.
Sokka jumped off of Appa, rushing over to Aang to cut his bonds. “Hey! This is some quality rope!” He commented, before moving to Y/n to free her as well.
“We need to get to the oasis! The spirits are in trouble!” Aang got up, and ran to Appa, while Sokka helped Y/n to her feet.
Everyone was on the bison, ready for take off, but Aang hesitated on leaving, looking towards Zuko’s knocked out form. “Wait, we can’t just leave him here.”
“Sure we can. Let’s go.”
Y/n shook her head softly. “No, Aang’s right, we can’t leave him. He could die.”
Aang jumped off Appa, and grabbed Zuko to bring him up onto the bison. Sokka watched him with a somewhat exasperated expression. “Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. Let’s bring the guy who’s constantly trying to kill us!”
As they started to fly back to the Spirit Oasis, the moon changed to a blood red, casting a red light over everything. This seemed to affect Yue, who held her head in pain, letting out a groan.
Sokka looked at her concerned. “Are you okay?”
“I feel faint.”
Aang, with a hand to his head, looked at the moon. “I feel it too. The Moon Spirit is in trouble.”
Yue glanced at the moon as well. “I owe the Moon Spirit my life.”
“What do you mean?” Sokka questioned.
“When I was born I was very sick and very weak. Most babies cry when they’re born… But I was born as if I were asleep. My eyes closed. Our healers did everything they could. They told my mother and father I was going to die. My father pleaded with the spirits to save me… that night, beneath the full moon, he brought me to the oasis and placed me in the pond. My dark hair turned white, I opened my eyes and began to cry- and they knew I would live. That’s why my mother named me Yue, for the moon.”
They neared the oasis as Yue finished her story, to find Zhao there- a bag in hand and Momo on his head trying to stop him from what he was doing. The group got off Appa when he landed, sans Yue and Zuko, ready to fight Zhao and the other Fire Nation soldiers in the oasis.
“Don’t bother!” Zhao held a knife to the bag he had, which must have had the Moon Spirit trapped inside.
Aang dropped his staff, raising his hands in surrender. “Zhao! Don’t!”
“It’s my destiny… to destroy the Moon… and the Water Tribe.”
Y/n glared at the man, resisting her urge to attack him. “You’re insane.”
“Destroying the moon won’t just hurt the Water Tribe. It will hurt everyone- including you. Without the moon, everything would fall out of balance. You have no idea what kind of chaos that would unleash on the world.” Aang tried to reason with him, but Y/n wasn’t sure words alone would stop the man.
“He is right, Zhao!” Heads turned to Iroh, as he approached.
“General Iroh, why am I not surprised to discover your treachery?” Zhao spoke in a bored tone.
Iroh lowered his hood. “I’m no traitor, Zhao, the Fire Nation needs the moon too. We all depend on the balance.”
Unsurprisingly, Zhao continued to hold his threat on the Moon Spirit, the knife he held at the bag it was captive in not dropping.
“Whatever you do to that spirit I’ll unleash on you ten-fold!” Iroh pointed a finger at Zhao, before taking on a firebending stance. “LET IT GO, NOW!”
After a moment of stillness, Zhao faltered, lowering the bag. He kneeled and released the fish of the Moon Spirit back into the pond. The red light casted from the moon returned back to normal.
Seeing something move in the corner of her eye, Y/n’s attention moved to the right, just in time for her to see a figure sneaking away. Careful not to draw attention to herself, she followed after them, noting that Zuko was missing from Appa’s saddle as she snuck by. He was taking the chance to sneak away, while everyone was focused on Zhao. If she had anything to say about it, he wouldn’t be getting far.
In her pursuit, the moon fell dark, probably thanks to Zhao. It’s not a surprise that he would try and kill the moon spirit, even after letting it go. Keeping her distance and staying as hidden as she can, Y/n continued to follow Zuko- Only stopping when he did. Eyebrows furrowing together, she watched as he shot a blast of flames to a lower area from where they stood- Which was shot at Zhao.
The man stopped in his steps, looking up at Zuko incredulously. “You’re alive?”
“You tried to have me killed!”
He shot several more blasts at Zhao, which he was able to dodge. When he tried to run off in the other direction, Y/n moved quickly to grab her bow and an arrow, shooting it at the ground in front of him. Both Zhao and Zuko were shocked by this, not having noticed her before.
“You tried to have him killed?!”
Zhao’s gaze darted between the two, before primarily focusing on Zuko. “Yes, I did. You’re the Blue Spirit- and enemy of the Fire Nation! You freed the Avatar!” Pausing, he pointed to Y/n. “And her!” His words dripped with venom.
“I had no choice!”
Zuko fired several more attacks at Zhao, while Y/n readied an arrow- though she waited to shoot it until the right moment. Zhao avoided the attacks, removing and dropping his smoking cloak as they subsided. “You should have chosen to accept your failure- your disgrace! Then, at least you could have lived.”
Returning the fire, the two end up in a short exchange of attacks, before Zuko blasted Zhao in the chest, knocking him down. Having seemed to realize Y/n was waiting for the right moment for attack, Zuko glanced at her. “Now.”
Though she didn’t need his signal- In quick succession she fired two arrows at Zhao, one pinning his sleeve to the ground, the other pinning his pant leg. The two jumped down to the lower level Zhao was, landing on either side of him as he struggled to free his clothes from the arrows. Zuko took on a firebending stance, while Y/n pulled another arrow through her bow. They both waited to attack, watching the man carefully.
Finally wiggling the arrow free from his shirt sleeve, he scoffed, looking between the two. “Two traitors working together again, hm? I’m not surprised at this point.”
Y/n narrowed her eyes when the Admiral quit trying to wiggle the arrow pinning his pant leg down free, quickly pivoting on her heel at realization. Twisting to the side, she narrowly dodged the arrow when he threw it at her. This initiated the fight once again, Zuko sending a relentless stream of attacks. Realizing her bow wasn’t going to get her anywhere in a close range fight, Y/n hooked it away onto her quiver, running at Zhao while he traded fire blasts with Zuko. She grabbed onto his arm as he tried to send an attack at the prince, yanking it to the side so the blast shot to the right. He twisted his other arm to send a fireball right into her face, which she was able to duck away from as she released his arm. The momentary distraction gave Zuko the opening to shoot a powerful blast at Zhao, knocking him back a bit.
Unable to keep his attention on both of them at once, Y/n was able to swipe her leg at his ankles while he was focused on Zuko, knocking him down. Not relenting, Zhao shot a blast at Y/n, catching her off guard and knocking her down. She rolled out of the way of another blast, before Zuko helped her off the ground- While firing at Zhao. The two looked at each other briefly, sharing a nod.
Running at Zhao once again, Y/n twisted, ducked and dodged the attacks sent at her, while also giving room for Zuko to send his own blasts at the man. Once close enough, she started throwing punches at Zhao, taking his attention in the fight. The close proximity of the fight didn’t stop him from using his fire, leaving parts of her clothes to be singed. She ducked when he tried to punch her with a blazing fist, giving the opening for Zuko to send another powerful blast at Zhao, knocking him down once again.
He didn’t get up this time, rather looking past the two with a horror ridden expression. “It can’t be!”
Furrowing her eyebrows, Y/n turned to see what he was looking at- The moon. In the heat of the battle, she hadn’t noticed it started to shine bright once again.
Suddenly, water rose up coalescing around the bridge they were on, taking the form of a large fish like creature. It reached out and grabbed Zhao, pulling him off the bridge. He struggled against it, before Zuko reached out to him. “Take my hand!”
For a moment, it seemed like he was going to grasp onto Zuko’s hand, but instead drew back- an expression of hate taking over his features. Zhao was taken under the surface of the water, disappearing. Crossing her arms, Y/n looked at the surface of the water in near disbelief.
Silence lingered in the air, it only being broken when Zuko quietly cleared his throat. Looking up from the surface of the water, she glanced over at him. He took a minute, before speaking up.
“Listen, Y/n… I’m… sorry. For everything. I- Ugh, what am I even trying to say here.”
She raised an eyebrow in amusement. “That you’re sorry?”
“Yes- Wait, I already said that..” He breathed out a sigh, holding a hand to his forehead. Laughing softly, she held out her hand.
“Truce?”
He hesitated for a moment, before grasping onto her hand, a soft smile tugging up his lips. “Truce.”
Tugging him a step closer, Y/n put an arm around his neck, bringing him into a hug. Zuko tensed at the action, but returned it nonetheless.
“We can still be friends..” Mumbling quietly, she broke away from the hug. “But I need to get back to them.”
“I.. understand.” He paused. “Actually, no, I don’t. But… I won’t stop you.”
Offering a small smile, she slipped past him, intending to go back to the oasis. She stopped on the way there, however, seeing that her friends were gathered. Katara waved her over, inviting her into the group hug they were currently sharing. Running over, she joined them, a wide smile on her face.
---
Sea water gently splashed up against the sides of the boat, spraying past the railings. The more Y/n sat with her back against them, her head leaned back, the more the back of her shirt and her hair dampened from the water. Eyes closed, she took in a deep breath. With her terrible track record on boats, she didn’t know that being out at sea could be so… relaxing.
“Can’t sleep?”
She shook her head softly in response. “You can’t either?”
Sokka breathed out a quiet, somewhat tense, laugh. “No..” He paused for a short moment. “Do you mind?”
Opening her eyes to see that he was motioning to the space on the deck next to her, Y/n offered a soft smile. “Not at all.”
Muttering a small thanks, he gave a weak smile in return, before settling down next to her. He sat close enough for their shoulders to press together, the close proximity made her heart race.
Silence lingered over them for a long moment, before Y/n spoke up. “I heard what happened… With Yue.”
Breathing out a soft sigh, Sokka tilted his head back, looking up at the moon. “Yeah… I figured you would.”
“I’m sorry for bringing it up but- I just wanted to say if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m always right here.”
“Thanks..” He paused for a moment. “You know, I went to that shop you were working at once when you weren’t there. I was trying to catch you there, that… didn’t work out- Obviously.” He breathed out a quiet chuckle, digging into his coat pocket. “But I did meet that lady you worked for, and she asked me to make sure this got to you.” He held out a bracelet, the one she’d been looking at in the shop before she started working there.
Her eyes widened slightly. “I forgot about that.”
“That’s why she asked me to give it to you. Let me see your wrist.” He tied the bracelet around her wrist, once she held it out to him.
“Thanks.” She spoke with a smile, twisting her wrist slightly causing the stone to glint in the moonlight.
“It’s no problem.” Smirking, he took on a slightly teasing tone. “I didn’t expect you to be a jewelry person.”
Pressing a hand to her chest, she feigned an over exaggerated offence. “Just because I lived in a forest and can fight better than you doesn’t mean I can’t like girly things.”
He looked at her offended. “You cannot fight better than me!” She leaned a bit closer to him, raising an eyebrow. “You wanna test that theory?”
Falling silent, he gulped. “No, I think I’m good.”
They were both quiet, before breaking into a short fit of laughter. Leaning back against the boat's railing, Y/n hugged one of her knees to her chest.
Once again, silence fell over them. After a few moments, a sudden weight was on her shoulder. Tensing slightly, she looked to the side, to see that Sokka had fallen asleep- His head now leaning on her shoulder. She opened her mouth to wake him up, but stopped herself.
Something in her didn’t want to wake him up… The closeness was… Nice.
Letting her eyes fall closed, she leaned her head back, absentmindedly fiddling with the bracelet tied around her wrist. She felt so calm, but still her heart raced, and she wasn’t sure why.
With certain thoughts and memories coming to mind, however, the pieces started to fit together.
And it was in that moment, Y/n realized.

Even in your sick state, your heart still started racing when you heard your boyfriend turning his spare key to your apartment in your front door. You peeked out hopefully from your nest of blankets on your bed as he opened the door and came in, holding a grocery bag and two paper cups from the Jasmine Dragon. He sent you a grin as he kicked his shoes off.
“Sokka!” You gave him as bright a smile you could muster that was quickly overtaken by a cough following your cry of his name. You made a face as you swallowed back the mucous caught in your throat.
“You sound horrible, babe,” Sokka said, setting the bag down on your kitchen counter.
“I feel horrible,” you rasped, flopping back in bed against your stack of pillows.
“It’s okay now, though,” he cooed, approaching with your tea in hand. “Dr. Sokka’s here to get you feeling all better in no time!”
You quickly buried yourself under the blankets before he could reach you. “Don’t get any closer, I don’t wanna get you sick.”
“You asked me to come!” he laughed, pulling the fabric away after setting the tea down off to the side. “You can’t beg me for attention and then hide when I give it you.”
You pouted up at him. “Well, I do want the attention. But I also don’t want to give you anything in case it’s contagious.”
“Nah, I’ll be okay.” He puffed out his chest. “I have an incredibly strong immune system. My white blood cells are little tanks that decimate any foreign body!” He dropped into a fighting stance and mimicked a quick one-two punch in the air.
Your giggles at his dramatics made you start coughing again. “Don’t make me laugh,” you wheezed, “you’re gonna make me choke!”
“I can’t help being so funny, that’s like asking me to be a whole different person.”
“Well, then I’m gonna cough on you and I won’t feel bad about it anymore.”
“Go ahead, princess! Like I said, impenetrable immune system here.” He pounded dramatically on his chest and you rolled your eyes, trying not to laugh again.
“You’re a weirdo.”
“I’m your weirdo.”
“Yeah, yeah.” You desperately had to fight back your smile as you cradled your tea and took a long sip. You scrunched up your nose and glared at Sokka. “What is this? It’s disgusting. Zuko made it, didn’t he?”
“No, but he did call me a simp when I told him it was for you. I guess Toph finally taught him what it means.” He sat down on the edge of your bed and slid his hand over your thigh, absently rubbing circles into your skin with his thumb. “I tried to order your usual, but when Iroh overheard you were sick he insisted on making you something to help you feel better. So, I guess it’s medicine.”
“It’s gross.” You took another sip and winced at the bitter taste. He gave you a sympathetic look and reached up to brush your hair back from your forehead.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault,” you sighed. “Iroh’s always been a tricky one.”
“I did get you some soup, though. You want that?”
“Yes pwease.” You gave him your best begging eyes and jutted out your bottom lip. He shook his head, pinching your nose as he stood.
“Don’t do that stupid voice.”
“I don’ know what you’we tawking about.”
“I’m gonna eat your soup.”
“Don’t you dare, Sokka.” He laughed at your sudden shift in tone.
“Finish your tea. Knowing Iroh it’ll probably get you better faster than any prescription. I think that old man’s a witch.”
“You’re a witch,” you grumbled, sipping at the tea anyways at his request. You didn’t have the energy to fight him about it. He returned with the takeout bowl of egg drop soup and you immediately abandoned the medicinal tea in favor of the savory broth. “Thanks, babe.”
“Of course.” He leaned down to press a kiss to your forehead and crawled into bed next to you. You only ate a little bit before you started to feel queasy again, so you put the bowl to the side and snuggled up next to your boyfriend. “Is something wrong with the soup?” he asked as he tucked you under his arm.
“No,” you hummed, closing your eyes, “I just feel gross. I’ll finish it later.”
“I’ll put it in the fridge, then.” He moved to get up again but you swung your leg up over his body and wrapped your arm around his waist.
“Don’t get up,” you groaned. “I just wanna cuddle and get my germs all over you.”
He made a face but settled back down. “Ew. What happened to not wanting to get me sick?”
“Changed my mind,” you mumbled.
“Figures,” he snorted. He pulled you in tighter and gently kissed your temple and the top of your head. “You’re lucky I love you.”
“I know I am.”
“Say it back.”
“I’m lucky you love me.” You had to fight back your smile at his huff of indignation.
“(Y/N),” he whined, making you chuckle (and cough).
“Fine, I love you too.”

Hi, could I request a sokka x reader fic? Where the reader has really bad vision/with glasses and is super insecure about the way she looks (along with her body, not just her face) and she always jokes about her appearence. But one day sokka realizes its not a joke and he tells her he likes her for who she is, not how she looks? And its just super fluffy and sweet? Thank u! :)
So, I began writing this Xmas morning, and finished it sometime the day after? It’s short and sweet, and I hope you like it <3

Out of all her siblings, Y/N felt as though she was always a little different.
Being in the middle, she had looked up to her elder sister, who was beautiful and kind for no reason. Y/N had looked on in silent awe as her sister evaded conflict and quietly defied the Fire Nation troops who has invaded their village. Then, she had watched her younger brother grow up from some chubby baby with dumpling sized fists and rosy cheeks to the blueprint for a warrior. By the age of fourteen, he had grown adept in his earthbending – an ability he fought hard to keep from the soldiers outside their door. Even his parents, both non-benders, were remarkable in her eyes.
When she looked at herself, however, it was a different story.
After she turned three, her father fashioned her some glasses out of copper wire and sea glass until they could afford to buy some proper ones when she stopped growing so fast. She saw the world through green tinted lenses for many years. It was only many years later that she was given a proper pair of them and they became the most precious thing she owned.
When she didn’t have them on, Y/N was practically blind. This was extreme enough that her mother had trained a goat dog to be her animal guide if she ever lost or broke her glasses. Yes, they were precious, and Y/N loved seeing the world, but there were certain things she didn’t like.
Impressed by her astute observations and quick manipulation of some Fire Nation soldiers, the Avatar – yes, that Avatar – invited her away from her small village to come and help save the world.
“I don’t know why yet,” The young monk said with an honest smile, “But I feel like you have an important destiny and it intersects with mine.”
Whatever that meant.
Being away from home was marvellous. Of course, Y/N missed her family, but she felt like suddenly she could carve her own path, separate herself from the unit that was her family. No longer did she feel compared to her patient, stunning sister or her talented, muscular brother. She could breathe knowing she could just be her, and that was okay.
And then she looked a little closer.
There was the natural bender envy that came with travelling with the Avatar – who could live up to him anyway? But then Katara comes along, younger than her and completely beautiful, and masters so much so quickly. Toph was even worse. Y/N loved Toph; she was quick, funny, and they could relate on quite a few things, but she was powerful, and never had to worry about how she looked. Even Sokka, sarcastic and reliable, was good-looking and extremely useful on the battlefield.
She watched, absorbed, and learnt what she thought was best. How does Toph come across as so tough? Ironically, she was very ‘earthbender’ in that approach; she deflected. And Sokka? Well, he was the funniest person Y/N had ever met.
It was good, for a start. If she could joke about how she was feeling, she could be more self-aware, become more empathetic.
“Hey, Sokka,” Toph grinned, for once enjoying riding on Appa’s back. “You know what’s great about being blind?”
He sighed, a smile toying on his lips. “No, do go on and tell me, oh Blind Bandit.”
“Firstly, I don’t have to see you in a morning, or ever!” She said, that joking malice seeping into her voice, much to Sokka’s chagrin. “Also, I don’t ever have to worry about my appearance! I don’t even know what green looks like, and apparently it’s all I wear.”
Y/N snorted. “You’re lucky you don’t have to see me in a morning, Toph. I look like a floundering tiger seal. Sometimes I take my glasses off just so I don’t have to look in the mirror!”
The two girls cackled between each other, dissolving into conspiratorial snickers. Truly, Toph was Y/N’s best friend, as much as she loved everyone else. Even Noodle, her beloved goat dog, seemed inclined to love the earthbender too. Seeing if he was also in on their joke, Y/N looked at Sokka with a grin. He wasn’t. In fact, his face was scrunched up into a frown.
“You good, Sokka?” She asked, her smile slowly seeping away the longer she looked at him.
“Yeah,” He said, still frowning. “I’m good, don’t worry about it.”
When someone said don’t worry about it, Y/N usually understood that to mean she should worry about it, but that was just her experience. How, in laughing with Toph, had she could she have offended Sokka?
Trying to ignore the festering feeling in her stomach, Y/N continued to joke with Toph about a number of things in the same vein. Somehow that one look from Sokka made all of her jibes feel poisonous. It wasn’t exactly his fault, but she felt sick with every self-deprecating joke, her laughter dwindling until she settled into an uncomfortable silence, cheek rested against Toph’s shoulder.
As they came to the ground somewhere in the Fire Nation, Y/N hopped off Appa’s back with haste, that ache in her stomach increasing to a swell of nausea. She hadn’t felt this way in months. If she could, she’d step out of her skin. A word floated through her mind, swirling and deepening into her psyche: inadequate.
Breathing a bit heavier, she moved away from her friends, taking solace by a river. Distorted in the ripples, she saw her reflection. All the negative feelings pent up in her chest were flooding back. In a fit of rage, marred with far more complex emotions, Y/N ripped her glasses off her face and threw them to the ground. Her mind felt loud, clouded and thundering. The thoughts were sharp bursts of flurrying intensity.
“Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa.”
Y/N whipped her head around. She didn’t have to see to know Sokka’s voice; he must have followed her, she thought, rubbing the heels of her palms into her tear-filled eyes.
“Hey, you dropped your glasses,” Sokka said, gently prying one of her balled fists open and placing them there. “Are you okay?”
She sniffed, fiddling with her glasses. “Are you upset with me?”
“No!” He said, sounding taken aback by her question.
“It’s just,” She sighed, “You seemed mad at me when I was joking about with Toph.”
Sokka, too, sighed, grasping her shoulder. “Y/N, I was worried.”
His hand was warm, and Y/N slipped her glasses back on her face. He wasn’t frowning; a smile soft enough to make her melt was playing on his lips. Concern was painted across his face, delicate and understanding. Sokka wasn’t mad at her.
“Can– “ Sokka began, hand falling, voice stammering.
“Yes?” Y/N prompted, looking up at him, shy beneath her lashes.
“Can I tell you something?” He asked, fiddling with his thumbs.
Y/N nodded, looking at him with patient curiosity. A small smile was blooming on her face as she watched him trip over incoherent words, until he quietened. Sokka inhaled sharply. In a moment, his hands were cupping her face, his lips on her, ghosting softer than a feathers touch. Soft.
“Oh,” She gasped as he pulled back, hands staying close to her, thumb brushing over her cheek.
“You’re beautiful,” Sokka said, face honest as he looked at her with unbridled affection.
Guilt settled in her stomach as she looked down. “I don’t feel beautiful, Sokka.”
“That’s okay,” He smiled, pecking her cheek with a kiss; he seemed to punctuate each of his words with a kiss on her cheeks, lips, head, and anywhere else he could reach. “We can change that, yeah?”
Taking a deep breath, Y/N let his words wash over her, drowning out her spiralling thoughts. She rested her head on his chest and welcomed the arms he wrapped around her. “We can try.”
“Try is good enough for me.”
Y/N could hear the grin in his voice as held her tighter. He was meticulous with his kisses, whispering sweet nothings that felt like everything to her. Yes, she wasn’t like her siblings, nor the benders that surrounded her, but Sokka sure seemed glad that she was her.

Zukka Fluff <3
Protective!Sokka, Fluffy Zukka
Just a short drabble of these two lovelies being emotional on main; also, Sokka finds out how Zuko got his scar.
I hope you like it! Please lmk what you think, I’d love to hear!! <3
They were laying out under the stars, Zuko’s head cushioned by Sokka’s chest, laying contendlt as Sokka carded his hands through the elder’s hair.
“It’s hot,” Sokka complained. Not because he was truly bothered, but he wanted to break their (albeit comfortable) silence.
“Do you want me to move, because I can-“
“No!” Sokka held tighter to Zuko, wrapping both arms around him to prevent him from leaving. Zuko laughed, reorienting himself in a new position, accepting the aplogetic ‘please-don’t-leave’ kiss from Sokka with a grin.
“I was just observing, is all.”
“oh.” There was a beat, before Zuko continued. “Well...You’re hot.”
Sokka looked down at Zuko, who was grinning cheekily up at him from his new position of laying with his head on Sokka’s lap.
“Just observing, is all.” The fire lord said flirtatiously, before turning and looking out to the ocean.
Sokka chuckled quietly, so happy that they had made it to the point in their lives that Zuko was happy and  felt safe enough to joke and flirt like he did. It wasn’t suave, by any means, but the attempts at seduction were so Zuko that it was all the better.
Zuko was idly tracing patterns on Sokka’s calves, when he noticed a scar, about three inches long, shining white in the moonlight. It was obviously old, and long-healed, but he hadn’t ever seen it before.
Admittedly, though, they had only been dating for a few months, during which time Zuko had been trying to make reparations to the rest of the world on behalf of his nation and family.
He wanted to know what it was, wanted to know everything there was to know about Sokka, but additionaly, he knew how hurtful it was to always be asked about a scar; how it reduced you to nothing but some messy looking skin tissue.
Sokka had noticed the traced patterns starting to zero in on the old wound though, and unbothered, decided to tell Zuko.
“It’s from a fishing accident when I was a kid.”
Zuko jolted slihghtly, worried that he had somehow made it too obvious he was interested, but Sokka pressed on, obviously still content and not upset at all.
“Me and Katara were going with our dad and Bato to the ice-holes, to go fishing. Me and Katara had one hole, and then Bato and dad had one each. Me and katara were, predictably, arguing back and forth, and we started pushing each other and arguing- we hadn’t caught any fish, and we both were convinced it was the other’s fault. Anyways, I decided I was gonna make my own fishing hole, to prove that it was her fault we weren’t catching any fish. So, I stomped about ten feet south of her, and then realized I needed something to make the hole. So, being the stupid little kid I was, I yelled at Katara to throw me the bone-dagger we use to skin the fish. And, being the stupid little kid Katara was, she threw it. It, uh-,” Sokka sheepishly cleared his throat, before continuing. “It detached from the holder mid-air, and went right through my leg. It slashed my calf really bad, but that’s all that’s left, at this point.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Nah, it’s all healed up now. Besides, I’ve heard scars are sexy. They apparently help pick up cute guys.”
Zuko sat up, quirking his non-scarred brow at Sokka, who laughed and just grabbed Zuko, moving him towards him until they were hugging, stomach to stomach, Zuko in Sokka’s lap.
“I’m just kidding- I really only wanna pick up one guy.”
“Hmmph.” Zuko looked away playfully, ignoring Sokka’s attempts to kiss him. “Is this mystery guy a cute guy?”
“Oh, the cutest.”
“Really?”
“Oh, yeah. He’s got this really hot teen angst, brooding vibe, but once you get to know him he’s a total softie. It’s really quite endearing.”
Zuko’s cheek colored, blush matching his other cheek’s red.
“Well… seems like a lucky guy if he’s managed to catch you.”
“Oh, I’m definitely the lucky one.”
“Yeah?”
Sokka was in Zuko’s face suddenly, breathing in the same air, hot puffs of breath hit Zuko’s lips. Blue eyes met gold, both blown wide with lust.
Leaning forward, centimeters away from his lips, Sokka whispered “yeah.” Before leaning forward, capturing Zuko in a heated kiss, grabbing Zuko’s thighs and moving him higher up on his lap, stabilizing him.
The movement and flippant showing of strength from his insanely hot water-tribe beefcake of a boyfriend made Zuko moan brokenly into the kiss, which just allowed Sokka access to lick into Zuko’s now-opened mouth.
~
They laid there, panting, Zuko completely atop Sokka, his non-scarred ear pressed against Sokka’s chest, listening to the beat of his heart, allowing it to comfort him.
Despite laying fairly-openly on the beach, he hadn’t felt this safe and protected in a long time than when he was here, right in this moment, basking in the afterglow with Sokka.
“I have a scar from a family member too.”
“Yeah, baby?” Sokka’s tone was light; he didn't want to pressure Zuko into sharing his scar’s story.
Even when Katara had pressured him when they began dating, he had remained firm that if Zuko never wanted to discuss it, it was his own prerogative, and that was fine, too.
“Yeah… I was thirteen, and my uncle had talked the war-room guards into letting me sit in on my first strategy meaning. So, we went in, and this general was talking about how he was going to move an entire division of troops into a suicide-mission, purely as a distraction.”
The night around them was quite, still except for their voices, as if Yue was watching to make sure nothing interrupted them from this obviously-important moment.
Sokka was sickened at the horrifically brutish militia tactics the fire nation used to employ- to willingly sacrifice hundreds of lives, just for a slight strategical advantage? Disgusting.
“I… I didn’t agree, didn’t think that was right. I spoke up, even though Uncle had warned me not to. But I went on and said how reprehensible that was, how those were real people, with families and lives, and a loyalty to our nation. I was quickly rebuked, and in a show of anger, I agreed to an Agni Kai.“
“Oh my god- at 13?!”
“Yes. And I was stupid enough to take the offer.”
“Oh my god- baby, I’m so sorry.” Sokka curled an arm protectively over his boyfriend’s form. Sokka ached for 13-year-old Zuko, scared and desperate to please his father, to please his nation.
“When I got to the arena, and prepared for the Agni Kai, it was revealed to me that I wasn’t going to be fighting the general. Because I had spoken out of turn in the fire lord’s war room, my slight was against the fire lord, not the general.”
“No-“ Sokka gasped, heart clenching at what he suspected was going to come next.
“My father was there, and said he would be who I battled in the Agni Kai for my honor. I- I had no idea it was him I would be fighting. I dropped to my knees, in front of the whole stadium, crying, pleading. I refused to fight my own father, and I told him as his humble and loving son, I refused to do so. I was so sorry, I was so scared.”
Zuko at this point had sat up, staring out at the ocean, legs crossed in a meditative-esque pose, hands on their respective knees. His voice was small, almost drowned out by the gently cresting waves.
To hear him, Sokka had moved so he was sitting directly behind him, purposefully not touching his boyfriend despite a visceral want to do so. He  knew this was a hard thing for Zuko to discuss, and he also knew physical touch was something his boyfriend struggled with.
“My father… he told me I had brought dishonor to myself, and in punishment held his hand over my eye, and shot a burst of flame into my face. He banished me that night, and Uncle went with me… he said I would only be allowed back, to restore my honor if I brought him the avatar.”
Sokka jumped up, and started aggressively pacing back and forth, parallel to Zuko.
As if pulled from a dream, the thousan yard stare Zuko had adopted broke, looking shocked at the tensed body of his boyfriend.
“Sokka?”
When he didn’t get a response, Zuko worriedly stood up and approached his stony faced boyfriend, shocked to find tears rolling down his dark cheeks.
“Where is he?”
“Wha-“
“Where is Ozai?!”
Zuko was shocked at the aggressive tone of Sokka’s voice. He had never heard him this… feral sounding. And, pushing past the thought that is was insanely (I mean, really, insanely hot), he was worried.
“Why do you need to know where my father-?”
“Don’t call him that, Zuko! That disgusting animal doesn’t deserve any relation to you.” Sokka looked like a mongoose-viper, coiled and ready to strike. His growled words and obvious anger were very confusing to Zuko, who just watched warily. He didn’t think Sokka would hurt him, but he was confused at the anger literally emanating from Sokka in waves.
“Why are you mad?”
“Why am I- Because I am trying to stop myself from building a ship, sailing to mainland, and hunting through every prison cell in the fire nation until I find your deadbeat father.”
“What- why?!”
“Tui and La, Zuko, because that vile excuse for a human had the audacity to lay his hands on you, his own fucking son with such a sick fucking intent- I just. That shit isn’t okay. If this were back home, I would have his fucking head, for doing that. To a- to a kid, Zuko!”
Sokka was crying now, tears illuminated under Yue’s averted gaze.
“Baby, I’m okay.”
“But it’s not okay. I am- I’m so sorry Zuko. The hand that you were dealt was so fucking unfair. I am so sorry, I wish I could protect you from that fucking monster. I just- I want to rip his head off. How dare he-“ Zuko brought his distraught boyfriend into his arms, who slumped down into the smaller framed man.
Sokka’s tears were steadily flowing, soaking Zuko’s bare chest.
“It’s okay, Sokka. I’m sorry I said anything, I-“
“No, please- I’m- God, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be the one being comforted right now.” He pulled away from Zuko, scrubbing his face with his hand. His form, now fully matured, towerd over Zuko. (Holy shit that’s hot Zuko thought staring at his jutting muscles in the moonlight, before admonishing himself that now was not the time to be horny on the beach.)
“It’s just- the mere thought of someone laying a hand on you, baby, especially with such an evil purpose, it makes my blood boil. I love you so much, Zuko, and I know you probably aren’t ready to say that, which is fine, but I love you so fucking much and all I want is to protect you, and heal you, and save you from-mmhph!”
Sokka was silenced by Zuko’s fervent kiss, hungrily moving his lips against his boyfriends.
When they both needed air, the pulled apart regretfully, panting in sync.
 “I love you too.”
They fell back into the sand, and back into each others arms, languidly kissing, feeling blessed to be with the other, in their small, personal realm of love and safety.
~
“Iroh.”
“Hello, Sokka. What an unexpected surprise!” The reitred war general regarded his nephew’s boyfriend warmly, if not slightly appraisingly as he stood outside Iroh’s quarters in the palace.
“Is it?”
“Ah, well, perhaps not entirely. My nephew mentioned he has told you the story behind his scar.”
“He did.”
“When he came to me, he seemed very shocked to find your reaction so… visceral. I had to explain to him that anyone who loves him truly and deeply will react much the same. He still has trouble realizing his worth, how his treatment as a child was so flawed. He’s still accepting that the world’s treatment of him wasn’t right, and wasn’t deserved.”
“I… I haven’t felt that kind of anger in a long, long time. Maybe ever.”
“Hmm. That is just the price of love, Sokka.” he mused. Turning his wizened eyes to the younger man, “Now, I’m sure you’ve come to see me for more than a hello, yes?”
“Do you know where Ozai is being kept?”
Iroh regarded the man, studying him, not letting the shock show on his face.
Far from the young child-soldier with traditional face paint on who he first saw many years ago; Sokka had grown so much.
In place of that lanky, pubescent boy, stood now a full-fledged southern water tribe warrior, who had the traditional tattoos, battle scars, and hard-earned wisdom to prove his standing in the world. He had fought for all he had, and he protected what he saw as his.
With a deep sigh, Iroh moved aside from the doorway. “Hmm... this may be a bit longer than I thought. Do come in, Sokka… won’t you play me in a riveting game of Pai Sho?”

what can i you you tell me about your atla ocs?
ahhhh so much! spoilers for all three seasons btw! (also under the cut because it got long)
ok so the one that i’m probably most excited about is hikari! she’s 16 and a waterbender from a small village that lived on the outskirts of omashu! it was originally like a “stop” for injured soldiers when the war first began but eventually progressed and turned into its own village! hikari’s father was fighting in the war, but was home for a few days as his troops moved, but unfortunately those few days were the same ones that the fire nation attacked. before taking over omashu they invaded the village searching for waterbenders and her dad and others managed to hold them off long enough for hikari and her mom to escape! sadly, her dad died in the fight.
her and her mom decide to head to ba sing se as refugees and this is when the story actually starts! they’d been in the city for about a month before the gaang & zuko and iroh show up, and her mom ends up getting really really sick. she helps heal her since she’s, you know, a waterbender, but her mom wants medicinal tea for the Comfort Factor, so kari heads out to get some and stumbles across the shop that iroh and zuko are working at! (of course she knows them as mushi & lee). her and iroh become friends over the course of her visiting the shop to pick up tea for her mom, and zuko kinda watches from a distance as they interact. her and zuko end up becoming friends too and date for a while! then uh... he betrays everyone in the catacombs lol. hikari then joins the gaang because if she stays in the catacombs she will literally be a prisoner of war and she spends most of season 3 worrying about her mom and then the later half being pissed at zuko. her faceclaim is brianne tju (my fancast for zuko is brandon soo hoo)
Tumblr media
NEXT is my baby boy takashi, who is uh.... a fire nation soldier hehe. basically he grew up in the fire nation and when he was thirteen his family recieved a letter that his dad had died in the war and they were drafting takashi. my poor baby who did Not want to do that uh... refused to go to training and then him and his sister, akira, came home to find their mom dead and a soldier sitting in their living room. he basically threatened that if takashi didn’t join the war then they would kill his sister too and so... he joins lol.
he has a Lot of trauma bc he’s in a war that he doesn’t give a single shit about and just wants to protect his older sister. so, when he’s 16 and told that he was to go to ba sing se as a spy disguised as a refugee to gather information and help the fire nation take over... he does. i’m not super sure about how he meets everyone but he ends up running into jet and him and jet kinda have a lil.... Thing, ofc after takashi, who is just a repressed gay doing his best accidentally reveals that he’s fire nation, jet pushes him away so fast and runs off to go tell the dai li (ofc he’s brainwashed before that happens)
him and sokka end up meeting and ofc takashi knows exactly who he is but sokka’s a hopeless bisexual who thinks he’s hot and is constantly flirting with him and they form a nice lil friendship (while sokka def wants more) and takashi struggles with wanting to be with sokka and needing to protect his family! it’s a whole Thing that i haven’t figured out entirely but yeah! his faceclaim is ryan potter! (and my sokka fancast is booboo stewart)
Tumblr media
FINALLY WE HAVE MY BABY princess niko! she is the niece of king bumi and her story is that her father was the king of a small earth kingdom called shin lao that was conquered by the fire nation when niko was still an infant. she was actually in omashu when the invasion happened because there were telltale signs that the invasion was coming soon and her parents were like “yeah let’s get her OUTTA HERE”. her parents do die when they refuse to just give up their kingdom and the fire nation takes over and basically turns this prosperous kingdom into ruins by the time niko’s six.
she’s an earthbender and bumi raises her and helps her master earthbending and teaches her how to be a princess and all that stuff because well... she is lol. they often visit kyoshi island to celebrate avatar kyoshi since she was the most recent earthbending avatar, and that’s where she meets suki! they fall in love and are cute and adorable but before the start of season 1 they decide to end it because niko’s a princess and she’s a kyoshi warrior and they’re both 15 and have responsiblities they have to focus on instead. it’s... very sad, but they remain friends and she’s actually with suki when she finds out that the avatar’s back!
she joins the gaang in season 1 when they go to omashu and is kind of just reassuring katara and sokka that her uncle bumi isn’t going to let them die, and at the end bumi’s like “don’t you think it’d be helpful to have a powerful earthbender on your journey?” and immediately they’re like “oh bumi we couldn’t ask you to abandon your kingdom-” and niko’s like “he’s talking about me” and shows off her earthbending like the kween she is!
her story is more about being a part of the gaang and the genuine love she has for the earth kingdom and how she copes with learning just how much the fire nation has damaged it! but, her love interest is suki and they do end up getting back together because being so involved in the war makes them realize how much they love each other and don’t care about how hard it might be anymore! her fc is lana condor! (my suki fancast is lulu antariksa)

i did an A:TLA rewatch and took notes because that’s just what i do, and here’s the notes if anyone wants to see my thoughts
i haven't watched atla since about a year before korra started airing, so like, around 2011. i should also mention that i never watched korra through to the end, but i guess i'll do that after this. if i feel like it. i do know that the biggest bottles were never popped
i have such a clear memory of the first episode. it must've been on nickelodeon pretty often, even though when it was airing, i only watched it occasionally. i remember they also aired the library episode super often.
aang's voice is so tiny and sweet
i gotta turn off my dumb adult brain and put my dumb kid brain back on so i can better appreciate the nickelodeonness of it all
sokka and zuko's first interaction.......
zuko's intimidating approach and then his tiny teen voice
SOKKA AND ZUKO'S SECOND INTERACTION............
zuko's like "i'm going home." with aang. he must be feeling an incredible mixture of feelings, thinking he has the avatar and can reclaim his Honor. but he also must be terrified to go back, and in disbelief... fortunately he's not going home like he said and there are even more confused feelings in between
i just remembered that iroh's voice actor dies between seasons :(
thinking a lot about dante basco... no thoughts in particular, just a lot of them... and how he shipped zutara lmao
"my troubles cannot be soaked away!"
hei bai looks like a ben 10
mounts list (added to as i progressed through the series): zuko's rhinos. earth armored ostriches. metal noshing mole. north pole goatyak. azula and friends' fur geckos. sabertooth moose lion if you're not a wimp. appa-sized beetle. moose with aquatic features. Eel Hound.
you can't out-mom-friend katara. even when she's yelling and being reckless
it's true... airbenders are weak to nets.
the n*tfli* captions are making several mistakes. eat my ass ne*f*ix and hire me to do flawless captioning instead you dumb fucks
YEAH! even by episode 13 in season 1 we already know zuko is a good boy! well also by episode 12. and earlier. well i've seen the series before.
i've just learned that zach tyler eisen is the voice of aang and i have to give him huge props for having the perfect voice. i pay a lot of attention to voice acting, usually in a nitpicky way, and i've never heard an english voice actor whose voice is perfect on the level of ikue ohtani... and when he was like 12 years old. incredible. i'm not being remotely sarcastic
i gotta be 100% honest. i had completely forgotten the existence of zhao and that he's actually a pretty important character, at least in season 1. also his voice actor is pretty good. generally the voice acting is good in this show, and i'm picky.
god the animation where aang makes one catapult catapult the other is so good. also appa just picked up and grabbed a guy. with his fist. wait how many toes does appa have? is that 18 in total? also appa has scutes on his ventrum. anyway i love that appa can pick up and grab a guy but generally chooses not to. gives it more weight when he does choose to
zuko tells turtle seals to be quiet and then touches them unkindly :(
zuko busted out of katara's ice orb instead of melting it :\
zuko put his hood up like iroh told him to but aang just has his naked bald head in the snowy cold :(
seeing zhao grab and bag the moon spirit fish made me feel sick. such a foul act
god. the quality rope. i noticed sokka mention it and was like, "was this a chekhov's gun or a red herring" and then a few minutes later there was a pointed pan over to the quality rope.
anyway examining the quality of the voice acting here leads me to a thesis i might gather evidence to prove: american english voice acting for cartoons is far higher quality than american english voice acting for anime dubs. or is that just something obvious that everyone already agrees on
anyway anyway, the episode ended without the quality rope being put to use. unless i missed it, which is entirely possible.
jesus i heard azula's first lines and got an instant flashback to all the tumblr drama about grey delisle and her tumblr account and how she pretended it wasn't hers or something let's just erase all of this from my brain right now
this is kind of out of nowhere and borderline inappropriate but i'm glad characters in avatar are illustrated with nipples when they're shirtless... it always disturbs me a tiny bit when shirtless characters are depicted with zero nipple, not even a hint of nipple. (Aladdin.) not just because it implicitly stigmatizes something everyone has, but also because this scenario always plays in my head where it's like, a little kid sees a cartoon character without nipples and they think, "so i'm not supposed to have these..." and they start feeling weird and bad about themself... all you need to depict a nipple is a single unobtrusive dot. nothing visually offensive or explicit about it.
even to an audience who doesn't understand any cultural context, you can't not see the significance of zuko and iroh cutting off their topknots...
fandom seems to see sokka as the silliest one when in fact at least 40% of his entire role as a character is to be the tsukkomi
underrated moment: "you've got an elbow leech." "WHERE?! WHERE?!"
zuko should be a good boy and only steal if it's from pirates
stealy zuko stealing money and buying iroh a teapot !
god i forgot what a tiny baby voice toph has... so tiny
zuko trying really really hard but doing a bad job hammering (tears)
azula set up zuko and mai for a lucky sukebe...
when zuko's mom told him not to forget who he is, she didn't mean to remember that he's a prince and an heir as he revealed to the unsuspecting earth kingdom village. she meant to remember that he's someone with at least the base level of empathy and compassion, unlike most of his immediate family...
i still think aang's voice actor did a great job but i bet it sucks to be a young boy doing an excellent young boy voice and then when you grow up a little and presumably experience some puberty you just Cannot do the young boy voice anymore. hopefully in most cases where that happens, it's at least not abrupt
placing a bet that the writer for episode s2:e10 (the library) is different than most of the other episodes. i don't like it very much, at least in the first several minutes. if it's a name i recognize from the credits of several other episodes, i might be a bit disappointed in them. seriously, there's one stinker after another. and with such a great concept of an episode...
i didn't recognize the name of the guy who wrote this episode so i thought i was right but no, he wrote a bunch of episodes. must have been off his game for this one... either that or i'm in a very unforgiving mood and don't realize it... also when i went on wikipedia to look at who wrote which atla episodes, i learned that the animation for the show was split between two animation studios, and they're both korean. ah, i guess that doesn't mean all the animation took place overseas, as DM movie has a headquarters in the US. according to wikipedia.
oh, they're BUZZards... i get it... i gotcha.
aang with a vengeance is both scary and sad to see. but he does understand that property damage is nothing compared to a life
people who love azula are the exact same as people who love vriska: [comment redacted]
they have american birds in the avatar world. i keep hearing an eastern wood-peewee going "pee-pee-uwee" in the background :3
the serpent's pass seems geologically implausible.
sokka should really get face paint all over his face when he kisses suki. or like, the cartoonish image of when someone is covered in lipstick lip smacks, but it should be suki's makeup color
appa's been through so much and now he has to meet a boarcupine?!?! fortunately he still knows how to pick up and grab... but still :(
he touched appa's scutes and read them like a palm...
longshot translated his meaningful stares into out-loud words for katara and friends
zuko forgot that azula always lies :(
zuko should know that being redeemed in his father's eyes is the opposite of what he wants...
i LOVE aang's passionate tsungi horn dance
there are spring peepers in the fire nation
god the dripping of the rotten clams is so excessive
you know how ultrasonic humidifiers can create water vapor without heating it into steam, by vibrating it super fast? let's try that with waterbending, it'll be cool
two different bad guys have been skipped across the water like a rock
i love the fake time lapse of cleaning the river... and it showed how with pollution in real life, stopping the source of the pollution is not enough. it needs to be removed as well
sokka deserves LOTS of credit just for being able to handle a boomerang.
GOD THE SLOW PAN OVER THE BEAUTIFUL SWORD (in 3:4)
sokka also deserves LOTS of credit for being able to admit he doesn't know everything.
i managed to forget that zuko turns his back on iroh, while remembering that at some point, iroh gets buff
the voice of sokka's master is the voice of the boulder. right? right? no? are you kidding me? i suck at this
seems like kissing azula would have immediate consequences, like something melting
zuko is poorly socialized
zuko still forgot that azula always lies. even when she's being somewhat humanized in an episode like this.
so avatar roku had earthly attachments he did not let go of, presumably. such as his wife. did he have unfettered access to the avatar state? that's what i would ask him during this expositionfest if i was aang.
so sozin could do heatbending... that's amazing. i think i missed that the first time around.
that's right, zuko came back and his hair is long enough, but he hasn't recreated his topknot.
hawky is the only atla animal that poops on camera.
if you're gonna bend sweat, you might as well bend spit, and it's a little easier to obtain
wait so... is combustion man also a heatbender? i'll have to look into it later. [looked into it later: the avatar wiki has termed it "combustionbending?" are you shitting me?]
ooh it's the bloodbending episode! i'm pumped.
someone made a post about how when they watched this show and they were a kid they were thinking about how the characters are hot, and now they're watching as an adult and the characters are all tiny children... that's how i've been feeling. also season 3 episode 8 aang's voice sounds a little bit pubertous.
anyway damn this bloodbending episode is outright traumatic. good shit
oh, now zuko's topknot is back.
appa's armor covers each individual toe <:3c
i seriously misremembered the course of zuko's character development. and the timeline of the invasion in general. but now i understand that zuko has to tell his dad to eat shit face to face.
watching zuko's "zuko here" practice speech hurts 100% as much as it did the first time i saw it. and when he's delivering it to the gaang it's impossible to watch. i didn't put my hands on my head-- they just went there unbidden.
i kinda can't help picturing dante basco's face every time i hear zuko talk. the whole time. it's sometimes not optimal to know the faces of voice actors. especially when you're like me and you're not good at pushing out unwanted mental images.
what the fuck, combustion man? he just loves assassination so much you can't take back any orders. also i can't help but imagine that if you put a slice across his third eye his combustion would be fully inhibited. well i guess that's not a problem anymore.
i like that the gaang are a variety of heights, and that they're all noticeably shorter than most of the adults they meet. it just makes it feel realistic
if it was a US max security prison and prisoners were escaping they'd probably just fucking murder them
i love how when mai starts up the gondola again and azula is like "what is she DOING!" and ty lee just makes an "iunno" noise
tfw your best friend abandons you because you wouldn't let her murder her own brother
chit seng didn't get to free his girlfriend and best buddy :(
funny how azula seems almost docile when she's getting everything she wants. typical narcissist. well ok not the least bit typical.
sokka ate the rose. i remembered this scene Too clearly. but i didn't remember that.
um... was that the full moon? when katara bloodbent that guy? i should've looked at the sky... i went back and looked and still didn't see if it was the full moon. maybe the wiki knows. i don't care enough to look it up properly.
i was wondering when the melon lord would show up
none of the teens understand the obvious solution of defeating the fire lord by beating him INTO SUBMISSION (or oblivion) instead of killing him. just like in every anime fight ever. it's over when you acknowledge you've lost or you can't fight anymore, not when you die. (for the #1 best example of ending a fight the right way, see the way luffy defeats crocodile.)
so i know aang's gonna defeat the fire lord by essentially hitting him with a forced purification beam to the face and make him realize the errors of his ways or something. the fun part is how we get there
bumi bending entire houses through the air
aw i forgot the turtle island didn't have a cute face.
jyong jyong firebent a jet platform to fly around on?!
i guess the firelord can fly around like bakugou katsuki
i forgot that aang took away his firebending... and sokka hops up to him like "well, look at you, buster"
i'm glad i decided to watch this again. even if i didn't do a great job paying attention tbh. well i did spend a bit of time carving a little wooden spoon while i was watching. anyway i was thinking i wouldn't move right on to korra but rather read some of the atla comics that i know exist but have never read whatsoever. i wonder if i can find them in some kind of library...
i found the comics illegally on the internet and read a whole bunch (up until the end of the "zuko finds his mom" arc). i didn't write my thoughts down as i was reading, so i don't remember them. that's how my worthless brain works. i do remember that i found the comics satisfactory as an accurate extension of the show, and that i feel ambivalent about how azula is written/treated in the comics.
i don’t know if i feel like rewatching korra yet.
