Can I ask why you hate Batman and Robin Eternal? (it was my first DC comic ever, my dad bought it for me in one of his trips even though I didn’t know anything about the batfam or comics in general lmao). It’s been so long since the last time I read it I don’t even remember what it was about (I do remember enjoying it in that moment but it may have also been because it was a gift and the drawings were cool lol)

Aww, that’s very sweet. There are certainly bits of the comic that are enjoyable. I’m pretty sure that I’m actually in the minority when I say that I don’t care for it...but since you asked lol, there are several things about these comics that really rub me the wrong way. This is pretty negative (and way longer than I’d planned), so be warned.

For starters, Dick Grayson was just...not treated well by his family members in these comics. It felt particularly brutal here specifically...I think because Dick would say very harmless things, and his family’s responses in return were so abrupt and unreasonably harsh. Like, Dick says that he’s glad to see Batgirl, and wonders what some kids are doing dressed as Robin...

And Batgirl bites his head off. Or, there were times where Dick would just be hanging out in the general vicinity, and people would just take shots at him out of the blue for seemingly no reason.

It felt like he could barely breathe without someone criticizing him for it. At one point, Dick confesses that he’s feeling discouraged, and Damian’s response is to punch him in the face.

Which is a pretty good summary of the family’s treatment of him in these comics to be honest. Just literally, lashing out at him for zero reason while he just takes it.

One scene in particular that really frustrated me was this one:

You know, that other time in this comic series where one of Dick’s family members punches him in the face while he, once again, takes the hit and does nothing to retaliate. Good times.

For context...the big bad in these comics is a villain known as “Mother.” Her speciality is brainwashing. She placed several of her “children” in high-profile positions in order to enact her plans, even managing to infiltrate Spyral. In a message left for Dick, Batman specifically explains that “Anyone could be under her control, Dick. They could be people you know. People you love…they probably will be” (Batman and Robin Eternal #1).

Unlike in Pre-52, Tim’s background is largely a mystery. He’s acting suspiciously. So, Dick takes it upon himself to investigate and ensure that Tim’s not one of Mother’s plants.

On Tim’s side of things, he’s upset that Dick investigated behind his back and found out where he’d secretly had his parents living for their safety. Dick unintentionally brought danger to their doorstep (though, notably, no one was actually hurt). But Tim’s pissed, and punches Dick in the face.

Not gonna lie, this was hard to take. I mean, even if Tim was in the right in this argument (which he lowkey isn’t in my eyes), that still does not make it ok for him to just punch Dick out of the blue when Dick is, as pictured above, just talking to him.

And the hypocrisy that Tim is displaying here is stunning. How he had previously told Dick off for keeping secrets from the family by going undercover with Spyral, when he in fact had a whole secret family tucked away in a corner. How he tells Dick off now for invading people’s privacy, when just earlier in this very comic he had planted surveillance devices in Stephanie’s apartment without her consent.

How Tim storms off and goes on a solo mission with Jason because Dick’s supposedly too personally invested and thus compromised, when he just got so emotionally unhinged that he lost his shit at Dick and punched him. Once again, may I just say, simply stunning.

But does Tim ever face any consequences for this behavior? Oh, of course not! Instead, we get Jason joking about how great it is to punch Dick in the face when he is not even fighting back.

And everyone collectively piling on to Dick and blaming him, even though he had legitimate concerns. Awesome.

And Dick just continues to take it. Not once does he stand up for himself. It’s so hard to read him continually get shit on, I’m sorry. And it’s crazy how they treat him this way, and yet still ultimately look to him for encouragement and rely on him to save the day in the end? You hate to see it.

I also didn’t like what they did with Cass. I know, I’m just full of complaints. But they really watered her down. With Pre52 Cass, you could actually describe facets of her personality. She was compassionate, had a very refreshing, sassy sense of humor, etc. She wasn’t just...mysterious action girl who has a dark past and cries occasionally. I mean, there were moments where I could see glimpses of personality (the time she visited the ballet being the main one), but on the whole she punched people when needed, and otherwise just stood there as people talked about and around her. Essentially a prop for the story.

Another thing that makes me so uncomfortable (that I couldn’t pin down until I read this post here) is the fact that this comics version of events makes it so that Cass’ own backstory no longer has her as the focus; it’s not about her emotional struggles and journey. By having Cass kill Harper’s mother rather than a random man, it makes the story about Harper, and about Cass gaining Harper’s forgiveness. So...more using Cass as a prop...as an element of someone else’s story in what is supposed to be her origin!

Honestly, I have no idea why Cass would want to stay with the Bat-family in these comics anyway...her previous mentorship with Barbara Gordon is nonexistent. She’s no longer Batgirl. The two people who were once her closest friends treat her horribly.

As if she’s barely a person. Once again, sooooo hard to read this. Why.

Yeah, I could go on forever nitpicking here. You probably got a sense of it already, but I absolutely despise how Tim is characterized here. Most of the time, he’s an ass. Jason also had pretty inconsistent characterization. And I really don’t like how the whole comic treats Robin like something Batman owns and is meant to benefit from, rather than as something Dick created. I don’t like how Cain was “redeemed” in the end, and that Cass took on the name Orphan instead of Black Bat or Batgirl. Once again, how is she connected to the Bat-family exactly? And I don’t like how Dick’s time as Robin is portrayed.

The existence of this comic...drives me insane...

It’s also the worst time to be doing a “Does Batman treat his kids like child soldiers?” arc considering it is coming on the tail end of Spyral, aka that one thing that Dick did because Bruce beat the shit out of him and forced him to.

Looking through Batman’s speech to Dick there...some of the things he says to Dick are so uncomfortably close to what Cain says to Cass. Really horrible parallel there. Why DC.

I really don’t know why Dick was so certain that Bruce didn’t do something shady with Mother, as was implied throughout the comic, when Bruce had pulled the Spyral crap fairly recently. Idk why they didn’t play into that side of things. Like, the fact that this arc ends with Dick comforting Batman about them not being child soldiers:

Instead of Batman stepping up to reaffirm to Dick that he was a good partner and a trusted ally when he spent the whole comic being insulted by his family and being told this stuff by his enemies (and flashback!Batman):

Just sucks. I mean, Dick had just recently sacrificed everything (his family, his friends, his life, his identity, everything) to do as Batman wanted and go undercover, only to hear this over and over? To hear that none of it was enough? That he could never be enough? And Dick never gets reassurance that this isn’t true. This comic is just agonizing in so many ways.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I am not criticizing this to be a killjoy? Just venting. If you enjoy these comics, you are free to continue to do you. But I am never going to like them. And when I see people championing these books as the best the Bat-fam has to offer...oof is that hard to hear lmao! Surely we can do better than all this.

The Snake and the Star cover art process!!

Idk if anyone likes seeing art processes, but I like putting them together so ^_^

I love being able to look at the pictures and go “THAT started out as THAT,” and if any other artists do art process posts let me know and I will absolutely read them.

There are so many progress pictures for this cover, I’m only covering the sketches in this one. I plan to post the color progression tomorrow.

Anyway, here we go! (yes actually b/c i’m proud of the end result (but actually no)))

Okay, so this picture was sooooo hard to draw.

It started out pretty easy. I mean, who can mess up stick figures?

XD they look pretty silly, don’t they? In case you can’t read the words, they say “suspicious/irritated faces” in my scribbly handwriting. Plus, an “L” and “A” to indicate which is which. Turns out Aaravos is only two inches taller than Loki!

Now that I had the poses I wanted, I had a specific vision in mind for the background. So I sketched that out first, along with some lines for their heads. You may be able to tell I spent some time on Google looking at images of stylized snake heads.

Actually, the idea for the cover art background came before the title! It was that snake and star on the yin-yang symbol that gave our fic its title. (Planned shenanigans gave it its subtitle.)

Okay, and here are the mages standing back-to-back, with more facial guidelines. The top eyeline for Aaravos does go up on the near side, since he’s raising that eyebrow.

This picture was still pretty cooperative. I looked at so many pictures of Loki and Aaravos while sketching this out. Google probably thinks I’m obsessed (I may or may not be).

Hope thought I should put Loki’s helmet on, so I looked up pictures, and took about three seconds to decide it was going to be a highly simplified version. Aaravos’s horns were a little easier.

Oof, but the faces are where this one went wrong.

Aaravos’s stupid face just would not cooperate. Loki? Sure. He was difficult at first, especially his horns. Then I started with the facial features, and the stupid elf’s stupid smirk--! @#$%^&* YUCK.

I tried fixing that smirk so many times, the paper got a permanent smudge. I finally gave up and restarted on an entirely new sheet of paper.

This took a couple tries too-- at first it was a lot closer up, and their bodies would’ve overlapped too much. I think this looks pretty good, though!

It probably helped that this time, I thought to take my paper to the mirror and smirk at my reflection a few times.

...That definitely helped. Note to new artists: if you can’t figure out a facial expression, just use the mirror. It’s way helpful.

FINALLY THE ELF’S SMIRK COOPERATES.

And the tilt to Loki’s eyes/eyebrows that makes him look like he’s worried, maybe about if Aaravos will hurt him? That was entirely accidental, but I thought it fit so I didn’t try ‘fixing’ it.

Aaravos’s hair might even have been harder than his horns! So many different pieces.

This is the one you may have seen before. I decided to go a little further with Loki’s worry, so I made his mouth a little more open. Idk, I thought it worked.

I also cleaned up the linework a lot! This included changing the number of fingers poking out from under Aaravos’s arm-- I just couldn’t make the three fingers look right. Plus it made his hand look way too long.

Then, I stuck it on the copier and got to coloring. There are several pictures of that process, so that’ll be a post of its own, coming tomorrow. If you like/reblog this one, I’ll tag you in that one!

With more stuff about my little sad bean!

And yes, I'll always call her that uwu

Anyways, I already somewhat posted a part of this under a post from @panyum but I wanted to post this again here. By the way, panyum, if it annoys you that I tagged you again, then I'm really sorry! And if it does, please tell me and I will stop doing it! °^°

My Oc is called Samira Iona. She's from England, but her parents moved to Hawaii when she was still like, a year old. At the age of 6 she lost her father in a storm on the sea. She also nearly drowned that day, which resulted in her developing an aquaphobia. And yes, the moment she saw the location of the Okeanos singularity she started to scream, ran away and hid inside her room, refusing to come out. Anyways, at the age of 16 she took part in a program called 'The Bright Light Project', now known as False Light Project. That's a thing in a FanFiction I want to write one day. So, the goal of that project was to digitalise (?) a holy Grail war, so not a single person had to die anymore. Obviously, that project failed. The program got corrupted, which caused the holy Grail war to become some sort of battle royal with 9 rounds. 8 for every class and a last one, which was basically a normal Grail war. The rules were simple. If you or your Servant dies, you die in the real world. A round only ends if there's only one Master Servant pair remaining. The one, who survives round 9, is allowed to wake up. Samira was the one, who ended up surviving that war and was able to "return" to the real world. Except, she wasn't human anymore. Before the program shut down, it forced her Servants spirit core inside Samira. So she became not only the survivor of an tragic accident, but she was also turned into a demi Servant. By the way, her Servant was the Caster Matchgirl aka Giselle from HC Andersens fairy tale "The little Matchgirl". It's obvious that she can't control her new found powers, so the moment she got out of her coffin, one of the staff members went up to her to try and comfort her. Samira, being an emotional wreck at this point, immediately got scared and set the poor guy on fire. In a series of... unfortunat events, she turned a big part of the building into a ruin. Later on she was found by some Mages and got send to Chaldea, in order to keep her and everyone else safe. Because when she loses control in that area, literally nobody, beside the Chaldea staff, will notice. Because she was trapped inside a simulation where basically everyone wants to see her dead in some sort of way, she feared that something similar might happen in chaldea. She even got so paranoid, that she just locked herself in her room and only went out if she needed something to eat. You could say that she used the hidden technic of "if you don't know I exist, you can't really hurt me". There were only 3 people who knew of her. Da Vinci, it would be strange if she/he wouldn't know of Sammy, Dr Romani, who usually looked after her, and Mash. Mash actually caught her, when Sammy left her room at night to get something to eat in the kitchen. This meeting turned out to be exactly what she needed. When Mash was around, Sammy was always calmer than before. Neither Marisbury nor Olga Marie knew of her, because she started to life in chaldea in the time period when neither of them was the acting director. I just realised that this is getting long so I'm trying to keep this short. At some point during the grand order, probably after Fuyuki or at the start of Orleans, Sammy would sometimes sneak away to try to control her powers. She realised, that she couldn't just stand in the background, yell out commands and do nothing. After Orleans she tries to open up to her Servants and asks some of them to help her with her control problem. The Servants she summoned up until this point are Tamamo Cat, Hessian Lobo, Astolfo and Charlie.

And now, some random headcanons!

- Samira always feels pretty cold. But if someone touches her they realise that her body is actually very warm. But not in a fever kind of way. It's more like the warmth of a nice summer day. That is something that Sammy got from becoming a demi Servant. She got her powers from the little match girl, who, for those who don't know the fairy tale, died from the cold. That's the reason why Sammy's often shivering and saying that it's cold, even though she's walking through the desert!

- The first servant she summoned was Tamamo Cat and Sammy is incredibly grateful for that. Not only is Cat the chef cook in her Chaldea, she's also Samiras most important pillar of support. Whenever she had a breakdown, she went through it alone. But the first one she had after Fuyuki was also the first one where someone was with her. Cat couldn't immediately calm her down, but it helped that she was there for her and just let Sammy cry into her shoulder.

- Sammy can't control her powers. The first time she had full control over them was during Babylonia. Before that she would set something on fire if you scared her. When Mash first met her, Sammy was so surprised and scared that she accidentally nearly burned down the kitchen.

- Even tho she's very paranoid and anxious, she's still pretty childish from time to time. After the start of the grand order she stopped sneaking into the kitchen at night. Unless someone baked cookies. She's obsessed with them and will fight everyone who even dares to look at her delicious sweets.

- You could sit her down on a chair, tell her to wait there for you, leave, return after 3 hours and she would still sit there in complete silence. When she was younger she would've already ran away the moment you let her out of your eyesight. But now? She won't move an inch.

- In my first post about her I mentioned that she has a crush on someone. That someone is the sabers servant Charlemange aka Charlie! I know, I know, he isn't in fgo, but I don't care! But I'm still waiting for him qwq

So I match you with.............. Kenshin

You arrived in the past with a bang and somehow despite your tiny frame managed to carry a man four times your size out of a burning building. The whole experience honestly had you on edge. Just as you started to calm down another man dressed in green came riding up to you and the man you had just saved. Hideyoshi, the raven hair beside you called the man as he climbed off his horse and knelt down in front of both of you. He looked up from you and gave you the biggest death stare you had ever seen. He demanded you give him your name and background story. You were so shocked at the whole experience you simply stayed silent. The second he drew his sword you bolted. The simple scare tactic worked too well as you ran away from the men.

Of course, Hideyoshi followed you on horseback through the forest. You ran as fast as your tiny legs could carry you running straight into yet another man. He caught you in his arms and held you steady as you reoriented yourself. Heterochromatic eyes peered down at you. You were honestly super panicked and now apologizing profusely for running into the man. His features softened slightly as he looked down at the frightened creature in his arms, he could hear the sound of horses heading towards him in the distance. He gently wrapped his large hand around your smaller one and pulled you along as he started to run. Finally, he reached his horse hidden among the bushes.

The two of you remained crouched down in the bushes alongside the horses when a calm voice broke the silence, “Lord Kenshin, I have successfully secured us an escape route, if you would please follow me.” Kenshin then swiftly lifted you up and place you on top of his horse, before climbing on behind you. The three of you rode through the night for what felt like ages until you reached a small cabin in the woods. In the back of your mind, you couldn’t help but think this was how you were going to die. Kenshin helped you down the horse and lead you inside. Once inside, you got a better look at the man with a calm voice, and that’s when you realized that you knew him. Sasuke looked at you and instantly knew who you were. While Kenshin was outside brushing down the horses, Sasuke explained the situation to you. It was honestly all too much for your nerves to handle and you passed out.

You woke up in an extravagant room in Kasugayama Castle, you looked around the unknown room and sighed when you realized that it was not all one big dream. From the corner of your eye, you spotted a bunny scurrying out of your room, running in an unknown direction. A few moments later Kenshin appeared with the rabbit trailing closely behind him. He placed a tray filled with food next to you and crouched down beside you, “Sasuke told me that the two of you are from the same village, you are welcome to stay here until you return home.” After that, he swiftly got up and left.

In the days to follow you started helping out the castle staff, it was slow going, but your work was thorough. Something which the maids really enjoyed about you. You had been at the castle for a full week, and you still hadn’t spotted Kenshin again since the day he brought you breakfast.

Tasks done for the day, you made your way to the castle garden to read. After Sasuke had shown you the castle’s library, you had made it your personal mission to read every book within.

You sat in the garden in the shade of a big sakura tree when, suddenly you were surrounded by hundreds of rabbits. You smiled as the fluffballs nuzzled and cuddled you. Suddenly Kenshin appeared, “It’s strange to see the bunnies following around someone other than me.” He took a seat beside you and as if on cue half the rabbits jumped onto his lap and started cuddling him. There was a peaceful silence that stretched between the two of you as you went back to reading.

Kenshin eyes you curiously but then closed his eyes and laid his head down on the soft grass to take an afternoon nap. He never liked women and would usually avoid them like the plague, but you were different. He liked that you didn’t feel the need to impress him or try and wed him like those irritating woman from the different clans.

The next day the same thing happened, as you sat beneath the tree reading, Kenshin appeared. This time he started a conversation with you, you looked up at him from the book you were reading and smiled. Luckily for Kenshin, he had asked about a topic that piqued your interest, and you started chatting with the bunny warlord.

In the days to follow the two of you would always meet under the same tree at the same time. The more days that passed, the more comfortable you were around Kenshin, gradually dropping your guard and opening up. Soon he had made it past your barriers and in your eye, you now saw him as a dear friend

Ooooh how Kenshin loved his upgraded title and this new cheerful side of you. He started giving you the nickname little rabbit cause that is precisely what you were in his eyes. Shy and reserved at first but once out of your shell, energetic and excitable. He loved how you would burst into his room, excited to show him your newest drawing. He would legit steal them and put them on display for all to see.

The two of you would spend hours together, just talking and telling each other cool stories. Sometimes the two of you would just quietly sit in the same room and do your own tasks. Kenshin would do boring admin, and you would get completely absorbed in your drawing.

To be honest the more and more time the two of you cuties spent together the more Kenshin fell entirely in love with you. You were unlike any woman he has ever met. When he opened up about his past to you, you accepted him completely and still loved him without judging. Through your friendship with the bunny warlord, you helped him slowly work through the trama and all the negative feelings he would have. Some nights when he would have nightmares, you would hear him get up and sit out in the garden. You would grab a blankie and go and join him, placing the blanket over both your shoulders as you ask him to tell you about his dream. You may be short, but you were definitely full of love for Kenshin.

During one of his conversations with Sasuke, the ninja, let it slip that you liked mangas and animes. After a lengthy explanation as to what exactly that was, Kenshin got to work. In his spare time, he worked on drawing you your own little anime manga. When it was finally complete, he handed it over to you during one of your tea dates. You excitedly started reading in, and when you got to the end, you found a letter. You carefully broke the seal and opened it. Written inside was a confession of love from the bunny warlord himself. You leapt from the place you were sitting and tackled Kenshin down in a big hug showering his face with little kisses.

Kenshin loves that you show your affection so openly towards him. His eyes will light up in delight, especially if he hears you excitedly yell out his name from across the market street. He knows to brace himself as you usually run and jump into his arms, giving him the biggest hug. For a man that never smiles, whenever you are near or in his arms, he is beaming with pure happiness.

He loves how protective you can get over him as well. Especially when someone is trash-talking him, you are ready to fight. During these times, Kenshin will gently wrap his arms around your waist and bring you closer to him, and nuzzle his nose against your neck and whisper how much he absolutely adores you.

And fear not, no one dare say one bad thing about his little bunny unless they want to lose their head. He knows that half your hearing is basically gone so he will be sure to patiently repeat whatever he is saying to you if you didn’t catch it the first time. Again and if someone dares say anything about getting annoyed with having to repeat stuff to you, he, will, not, hesitate, too, teach, them, some, manners.

Kenshin would go to the ends of the earth and back to keep that beautiful smile on your face. You have saved him from the demons of his mind, and for that, he will be eternally grateful. Just as he has successfully brought you out of your shell, you have successfully brought him out of the darkness of his past and into the light of the future

Often the two of you can be found cuddled together with your rabbit army under your favourite sakura tree. Simply exchanging sweet kisses and interesting stories.

Otherwise, the two of you are spending a peaceful afternoon together in Kesnhins room, each busy with their own task. When Kenshin is done with his work for the day, he will place himself behind you, gently wrapping his arms around your waist, and propping his head up to rest on your shoulder. He will sit like this with you tight in his arms as you continue to get absorbed in your art.

He could spend hours just sitting with you in his arms while watching you gracefully sketch out the scene in your imagination. He will definitely drop a few sweet sneaking kisses on your neck and cheek as you work.

I am taking the opportunity and official allowance for shameless tooting to feature a number of fanarts I did throughout the years that hold some precious memories for me.

I’ll start with this one, which marks my humble beginnings in the fandom.

I was happy with it in the end (which is not necessarily a thing that happens often with me lol) because the aim was to capture the fear in her eyes (which can be tough in pencil drawings because eyes are just sooooo tiny). So when that worked, I was a very happy creator who since undertook the journey of fanarting in so many of its facets and continued testing herself out wherever the creative paths may lead her.

Then there’s also this quick sketch, which has a special place in my heart because I have a soft spot for drawing Brienne in her younger times, never running away from a fight.

Another one I just really enjoyed making was this one. And I was surprised people liked it despite the shitty, shitty photo I took of it since it was done during the holidays where no scanner was anywhere near in sight. The aim was to reflect book!Brienne’s desperation at feeling naked and alone without Oathkeeper by her side.

This is one of my first baby steps at digital art, which is still a journey I am on, not yet having arrived anywhere (though that is kind of the point, isn’t it?). I liked the mood of it, though, which is why I am including it in that list. Also... shiny freckles!

Another one on my personal list of fond fanart memories is this one. Yet again, my first steps at digital art, based on a pencil sketch I made before. The aim was to bring across both book!Brienne’s muscular physique alongside her vulnerability and youth.

This is something I had to draw because I am a thirsty hoe when it comes to Jaime being all about courtship with Brienne to make her feel like the lady she is but sometimes believes she isn’t because of her looks.Thankfully, Jaime is there to show her that she is, forever, his lady.

This one was fun to do as I got a nice prompt for the matter. I love me my happy endings for JB, so both of them at a feast with Brienne all flustered while Jaime is all touchy-feely was all kinds of fun to do.

I was really happy just how many of the JBO folk in particular was having flashbacks to childhood/teenage times of cutting out those things, because that was my very own experience with them. And I love drawing clothes, what can I say? I just posted the original ones, though I did a whole bunch of them. But this post is long enough as it is, so I thought I would spare you having to scroll through all of them LOL.

Those two make me happy because I see it, compared to my earliest beginnings at digital art, as a definite improvement on the journey towards finding my own style and figuring out some things I currently still struggle with. I was happy with how the two turned out in terms of style and I very much enjoyed indulging myself on Viking Jaime and Brienne since my fanfic May the Norns Bind Their Fate has my mind very much preoccupied with how sexy Viking JB look like in my mind as they continue to kick Viking ass. There’s still so much to learn and I am looking forward to it, but painting that made me happy, and that is, for me, all that counts.

And then, of course, I coudln’t possibly make a post about my wacky fanart without making mention of this one. The JB unicorn creation is one of my proudest up-to-date and thus has a very special place inside my heart. I mean, it combines JB *and* unicorns. What not to love, amirite??? Also, it made the person I made this for very happy, which makes me all the happier. Yay!

One of my personal favorites thus far is this one, which is why I make it the grand finale for this post. I had fun painting the kind of church window background and Jaime’s profile always has me go *chef’s kiss*. And it also checks the boxes for Jaime as King, which is one of my most favored headcanons people can pry from my cold dead hands.

and I’m alarmed by the fandom mentality. Maybe HT means good - but how would we know? we don’t have access to his thoughts - but we must judge his actions, and his actions are for the least very troubling. It’s always abt coercing Mo and not respecting his boundaries. I see the trope “when she says no, she means yes” here and once again, the fact the fandom swallows it uncritically (bc HT is a poor, hot tortured boy) is alarming. Forcing Mo to wear his gift stinks of “this is my possession, don’t mess wt him” 2/5

Maybe im pessimistic n its actually to protect him by distance, but once again he totally disregards Mo’s will. What if he doesnt want to be protected ? what if he doesnt want to be an object to be pass around between self-entitled psychos ? The first step to protect and help someone is by listening to them. I hope Mo will react strongly and will tell HT that by saying this, he’s no different from She Li. And i hope that would provoke HT to self-reflect a lot - smth he lacks tremendously. 3/5

That being said i love HT and tianshan! And what i love is how realistic and flawed they are. Theyre both hyper violent, distrustful, and severly lacking in communication skills. Im thrilled to see how theyre going to evolve -for the better or the worse, both is good for me. But i’m very disappointed by the fandom reaction like “ooh how cute hes possessive it means love!” or “actually its not bad doing HT doing that bc his intentions are good”. 4/5

And I will be vry, vry disappointed if OX decides to follow this trend and to not show how this kind of actions is detrimental to their reliationship and use the tired and dangerous trope of “being violent means that you care”. I trust them to be more nuanced than that bc until now they are great at drawing grey relationship. So yea i hope next chapter, tianshan plunges (before being better). phew. there’s a lot to unpack here – but I agree wholeheartedly with you. since this post is already kinda long, I will put my answer/explanation under the cut!

the parts that I bolded in your asks are what I intend to focus on in this answer. strap in, because this is going to be a long one.

before anything, let me put a disclaimer: I love He Tian. I love Guan Shan. I love Old Xian. I love tianshan, and I love where they are headed in the manhua. does that mean I also love where tianshan are right now? no, it doesn’t. and I’m here to explain why I look forward to their potential rather than their current relationship’s dynamics.

one of the hardest parts about being in a fandom is being able to separate fiction, reality, and morality. this is especially hard when a fandom is as old and endearing as 19 Days, and when you fall in love with & are rooting for all the characters. furthermore, 19 Days is not a tragedy. of course, when Jian Yi disappears, it will be tragic. but otherwise the majority of the manhua is a comical, romantic slice-of-life plot. as such, it’s easier for what would usually be seen as blaring issues/problems in tragedies to be disregarded for comedy or, in some cases, romance in a comedic, romantic slice-of-life.

this is exactly the case with tianshan. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: He Tian’s current relationship with Guan Shan is not healthy. he doesn’t listen to Guan Shan. he doesn’t respect his personal space. he doesn’t know where to draw the line. he doesn’t know how to properly communicate with him, and thus resorts to violence or threats. tianshan just have a problem with communication. and, sure, maybe it can be chalked up to the fact that they’re young and stressed and don’t know any better. but that excuse is almost as bad as the “boys will be boys” excuse, and that doesn’t make it any better nor does it justify their actions.

He Tian’s idea of relationships is so twisted, and as I talked about in a previous answer, it can probably be stemmed back to his trauma with the puppy Cheng took away from him. I won’t get too deep into that since I explained it in detail in that answer, but keep this in mind nonetheless: He Tian grew up in a family of violence, distance, miscommunication, and lies. it’s all he’s ever known, and that’s what he’s applying to his relationship with Guan Shan. does that make it right? no, absolutely not. but he’s learning.

when Guan Shan had a panic attack at the restaurant, He Tian learned that people aren’t robots/pawns to use at his disposal and rather have their own strong emotions/backgrounds that shape them. thus, he brought Guan Shan home without a word. when he had his night terror and woke up to Guan Shan holding his hands, He Tian realized that there are parts of Guan Shan he still doesn’t know and, potentially, an aspect of their relationship that they’ve only started to uncover. thus, he thanked him without preamble and with a bowed head.

what I’m trying to say is that He Tian does have good intentions at times, but not always. he’s learning as he goes, because god knows he didn’t have a family to teach him how healthy relationships should be. there probably is a part of He Tian that only wants to protect Guan Shan against She Li, but he certainly doesn’t show it in the right way. he acts possessive because he knows that if he doesn’t, he’ll lose what he loves (*insert flashback to the puppy*). again, does that make it right? hell no. jealousy and possessiveness are not cute and are entirely unhealthy in a relationship. the fandom should view them as such, but should also keep an open mind when considering He Tian’s background.

and honestly, the reason why I’m focusing so much on He Tian right now rather than Guan Shan is because if it were up to Guan Shan, he would’ve dropped He Tian within the first few days (maybe even hours) of meeting him. but because of He Tian’s persistence, Guan Shan has no choice but to be involved with him and retaliate when He Tian verbally/physically/emotionally attacks him. nonetheless, Guan Shan has tried to walk away from He Tian on multiple occasions when He Tian’s teasing became too much, and on those occasions, He Tian has given in. (ex. I can’t find the exact chapter, but there is a chapter in which Guan Shan refuses to use He Tian’s fork to eat He Tian’s leftovers, and he gets up and says, “I’m going home,” to which He Tian replies, “Fine, fine, I’ll buy you new food.”)

so yes – tianshan certainly have flaws. He Tian holds too much power, and Guan Shan can’t catch a break. the fandom romanticizes their interactions, but if you take a moment to think realistically and recognize that character flaws are essentially bad but also critical for character development, then there is an even balance in the readers’ relationship with the manhua. don’t support He Tian’s violent interactions with Guan Shan and claim “omg He Tian loves Guan Shan sooooo much when he forces Guan Shan to do XYZ,” but rather support the fact that he hasn’t physically manhandled/harmed Guan Shan in many chapters. support and celebrate He Tian’s development, not his flaws.

and as for what you said about Guan Shan telling He Tian that he’s “no better than She Li”? while I don’t think He Tian is truly as bad as She Li, I actually think that would be a painful, great, and pivotal moment in their relationship. after all, the most consequential scene in tianshan’s relationship thus far has been the kiss. at that moment, Guan Shan had told He Tian outright that he disgusted him and to leave him alone. since then, I don’t think He Tian has ever looked so… taken aback. unsettled.

and guess what? their relationship has only gotten better since then, and He Tian hasn’t touched him like that again.

I don’t know, anon. it’s a tough call. I think tianshan have a lot more chapters ahead of them, and I don’t think Old Xian will allow them to end on bad terms. actually, I don’t think Old Xian will allow them to end on the terms that they’re on right now. they can only improve from here on out, but how Old Xian will go about showing that improvement is unknown to us. there are many paths this story can take, but rather than worrying about what might happen, let’s focus on the here and now. let’s focus on the problems at hand, and let’s focus on the development the characters are undergoing.

don’t ignore the wrongness/cruelty of characters’ actions, but don’t romanticize them either. if you do, you’re only doing a disservice to the character’s personality, existence, and the author’s intentions.

(and as for this newest chapter specifically: I see why people can get excited about He Tian telling Guan Shan to wear the earrings. He Tian wants to verify to both himself and She Li that Guan Shan is with him now. that Guan Shan is no longer under She Li’s control. who doesn’t love a little verification of their OTP’s relationship, especially when it involves an enemy?

but at the same time, it’s unhealthy. Guan Shan doesn’t have a say. he’s being handed around like an object. I don’t think this is pessimistic thinking; I think it’s the truth that no one wants to acknowledge/hear. but I’m not saying that tianshan is wrong in this chapter; I’m saying that He Tian has good intentions, but he’s not showing them correctly. and there will be a chapter in which he does show them correctly, but we must travel this rocky road before we get to that point. patience is key, and I cannot wait until He Tian and Guan Shan reach that moment of clarity. you can’t have light without the dark.)

rosie: thank you so much!! making the game was a lot of fun so i’m glad you’ve enjoyed it :) my parts of the game were ford’s last two dates – mabel’s dinner date of dreams and sunset confessions. writing those two was super fun!!

i knew i wanted a special mabel-ified date (as she is my favorite character) so i incorporated her into the dinner date i planned for the player and ford– with her extra bits of pizazz on top, of course. when i wrote the meteor shower part at the end, i was in a rough patch and wanted some love and that good good validation, so i let ford give it to me, lmao. as the second-last date of ford’s route, i wanted it to be special and sweet, with ford’s affection toward the player really evident and confirmed, in a way, so it wasn’t just longing glances and blushing for the entire route lmao. it was originally the mabel-match date, but sovo swapped the schedules around and i think it works even better!

the pool date was more of a challenge. the last date of the route, the team and i agreed it had to be more of a serious one– one for ford to feel comfortable opening up to the player about everything that’s happened to him, not just what he told them on the dinner date, yanno? all about weirdmageddon and that business. writing angst isn’t really my forte – so thank you phoe for helping me write that nonsense– but we needed it to be important and kinda heavy on ford’s end, with the end of the game almost relying on how the player reacted to his story. all the seriousness got to me though so the option to jump in the pool was my executive decision eyyy

i also wrote the two between-y bits with mabel and dipper – pancakes and interrogations and the fine summer’s wedding! i wrote those just before the game came out, but since i was still in the middle of my college semester, it took me a bit longer… which is why poor sovo had to do a large chunk of the editing themselves, which i do apologize for;; but even with all the mad stress and load on their shoulders, they did a phenomenal job with everything they had to take on, and this project wouldn’t be the same– well, it wouldn’t even exist– without them!

sovo: I worked on all the programming, a bunch of background art, the GUI, Stan’s driving sprites, playtesting, writing, editing, managing, you name it. As you can imagine, at times this project really stressed me out!

The worst of it was probably the editing/rearranging/rewriting, which was a way bigger task than I anticipated. When we were organizing in Discord at the beginning of the project, we had so many writers that we split the whole game’s story up into nine pieces, one for each writer, and each with the same deadlines. At that point it was just the Ford and Stan events themselves– no in-between events with the kids, no transitions, no introduction or end. Writers handed in first drafts, then second drafts, and then those drafts went straight into editing.

The idea was that Isa, Rosie, and I could do all the editing to bring about a more unified voice, since we essentially had nine voices in there, but in hindsight it was… not the best plan I could’ve gone with. Not asking the writers to polish their dates further meant that way more had to be done in the editing stage– plus we still had to write a remaining third of the game from scratch (transitions/intro/ending). When I think back to it I can still feel my dread from those times lol, because there was so much work to do and as the school year loomed, there were three– and then two– and then one– people available to do it. Isa (below) is right, the discord went dead for a long time after the writers handed in the last of their drafts about a month into the project.

Also, almost everyone in the group was into Dream Daddy, so many of our writers followed DD’s suit and wrote mini-games into their dates (mini-games that I still don’t know how to implement). So I had to cut all those out and patch it over with writing. Then in some drafts there was still placeholder text left, like “[insert wall of text here],” which I had to figure out or just patch over with new writing. Then sometimes there was still wonky dialogue, or odd behavior, and I’d try and nudge Ford or whoever into character again. Then the introduction and ending were still partially done or just plain missing, so I grafted Rosie’s intro draft onto another intro draft and led it into Ford’s cryptid hunt event, and drafted an ending for the sim, and then Isa really fleshed it out after.

And while this wasn’t strictly necessary, I ended up rearranging Ford’s route just a tad. Ford’s route originally went cryptid -> ddamd -> dinner date -> pool -> baking, so the dinner date was originally Mabel’s matchmaking scheme– which Rosie pulled off super well! In fact, she pulled it off so well that something felt off to me about Ford’s route progression, because while each date stood fine alone, it’s like things peaked a little too soon. After a lot of puzzling over what exactly felt off, I finally switched it up to go baking -> dinner date -> pool instead, rewriting the context of the baking date so that it would fit in.

Honestly, I don’t think the three of us really know the extent of the work we did during editing, even now? Like, to add to the above, Rosie also altered/added stuff & wrote much-needed transitions across the game including the two in-between events with the kids, which I think really tied the game together by giving it a bit of non-dating-centric story! And Isa did a bunch of editing/rewriting all across the game, especially on Stan’s route. While they worked I got to settle into my drawing/programming/playtesting role, which was a whole other batch of tedium, but everything turned out great!

isa: *cracks knuckles* alright sooooo. to start off I was really in the deep of it all really early on, starting from the brainstorming stage! Like Sovo said, the base we started from was the dates- the chat came up with possible date scenarios for both characters and we voted on which ones we’d want to see in the game! Coincidentally, all the final dates that made it in were mostly proposed by me! But all the others we tried to incorporate somehow even if they weren’t top 5; for instance, a drive in movie was proposed but didn’t make it so it turned into watching a movie at home after the main boxing part of the date. I also arranged the date order before we started writing based on premise, and what was most believable for the progression + time to get to know Stan and have things get more intimate and hopefully natural feeling! The concept and writing for Stan’s final date was all mine! Although I had originally had it stop after the kiss in the diner to leave it open-ended with “you wanna get out of here?” so the player could decide whether they…. took a ride on the Stan O’ War or not lmao, but then Sovo encouraged me to make it more steamy ending which I’m forever grateful for mwuahah. Everything else about the date was a piece of cake honestly, I found it easy to write since I knew where I wanted Stan + player to be in terms of their relationship/flirt level. The hardest part was…. finding a way to cut the makeout short that would be in character! Which is why I used poor, poor Robbie as my plot convenience. Sorry m'dude.

I edited and fluffed the intro form what Sovo had and edited…. the whole game actually I think. In terms of fixing typos, grammar, adding little lines here and there, etc. both in Stan and Ford’s routes. A huge role was also communicating from Sovo to the other writers on what still needed to be done, organization, due dates, etc. So I was kind of like a manager/coordinator too. I also wrote transitions from one date to the next, like the nap reader takes in order to fit Stan’s boxing date cg in the game and wrote them cuddling Waddles as well as the first half or so of the final version intro to Stan’s final date (Sovo then took up the rest!). I wrote a couple general intros too but they didn’t make it in since Rosie did such a good job lol.After talking with Sovo and deciding it’d be okay to change Ford’s date order to feel like a more natural progression, I made changes accordingly to the intros and things that were now out of order within his dates, mostly the baking date since that was the main one affected along with the swimming date. I had fun writing for Ford on that one, I really like the small things with him, like having the idea that he can crack two eggs in one hand super easy.

The biggest thing for me was making sure everything was cohesive and in-character while editing the rest of Stan’s route. Each date was wonderful but with so many writers there were quite a few inconsistencies from one date to another, which is understandable since everyone just started writing on their own and didn’t know what others wrote until after. (And also I made some executive decisions on what I thought was and wasn’t out of character or what I thought didn’t fit with what we’ve seen in the source material or what would happen after the finale.) There were a lot of things that had to be removed as a result, which led to big gaps I had to fill and choices/possibilities I had to streamline. For instance, I completely rearranged and had to rewrite a lot of the movie part and the end of the date. Sometimes in the dates there were a lot of choices but none of them really had much of an impact on your approval rating in the game, which became more important later on, so I had to make bad choices worse and good choices better! So like for the films, the date ends differently depending on which film you pick, but if you’re doing well enough already and you pick an option that isn’t the best, you get an okay ending and aren’t completely out of luck lol (picking a horror film is neither the worst nor the best but if you have a high score already it’s more of an inconvenience than anything). Also, consistency was key. I had a unique challenge with Stan’s accent and how to write it in, so I’d find myself reading over his dialogue many times and keeping what felt natural and not forced to it wouldn’t be understood in context with other words lol. And simple things like punctuation- all the writers wrote things differently, so like TV vs tv vs t.v. etc or Stan O'War vs Stan-O-War, etc. That part’s more tedious than anything. OH, and I grabbed the voice clips from Gravity Falls as well as the sound effects for that version. It felt weird without an actual car horn to interrupt; I also found alternative tracks for the disco date until phoe pulled through!

And then finally, I rewrote the general farewell at the end from the base that we there already, and embellished and added a bit more floof to Stan’s possible endings. For his bad ending I think if you got a low enough score that your dates got cut short, he’d be pretty cold because wow you just made him fix your car and you were kinda rude to him bye stranger. And if you got far enough that he set up the disco date for you but your score was low overall, he’d be kinda heartbroken but definitely wouldn’t let it show, he’s just be gruff and defensive. And if you did well, he’ll let his fondness show a bit more in his own way. You’re still only someone he just met, and he’s spent so long hiding that he’s still getting used to being himself so he won’t bear his entire heart just yet, but there’s definitely promise and he’s excited. I headcanon that he sends you weird trinkets in the mail and texts/video calls you pretty regularly until the Stan O'War II docks somewhere close and you two can visit and catch up.

This project was a lot of work….. it was pretty dead in some spaces, mostly after the writers finished their dates and it got passed on for the monstrous editing job lol. Some times I couldn’t stop editing, others I was slammed for weeks with classes and personal life, and Sovo was so kind and understanding! I really learned a lot about writing and am sad it’s over, but also. Not lol. I’m so amazed with how it turned out and I can’t believe the reception it’s gotten!!! ;u;

After The Story: Reviewing Ylvis Stories From Norway Chapter 1: Stupetårnet

Hello everyone, and welcome to “After the Story: Reviewing Ylvis!” Every week, Eve and I, along with the occasional guest, will bring you not one, but two posts about the week’s episode of “Stories From Norway” - one about the show, and one just about the music.

So buckle in guys, because it’s been a long time since Ylvis, and a long time since we’ve analyzed, so we go a little nuts with this one!

(No, seriously, we do. We couldn’t stop ourselves. We took TBT and multiplied and magnified and doubled by ten...and then tripled and quadrupled it again and again. We’re all to blame. We’re sorry.)

Today Eve (miss @addictedtoylvis) and I join our resident musical theatre expert, Anna-Maija (@yellowsydvest), and we’re going to talk about the first episode.

1 - What was your favourite moment?

Robin: Can my favourite moment just be Bård? I mean, I’ve watched this episode four times, and I just can’t pick a single moment because I just love everything that he did so much. I’m sticking with that. Bård is my favourite moment. He was marvellous as Geir.

Eve: One of my favorite things about Ylvis is when they veer off track or take things in a completely unexpected (and usually ridiculous) direction, so my favorite moment in this episode was when "Sink the Tower" suddenly switched from a protest song to a song dithering about scheduling. Watching Vegard deflate slightly while still trying to keep the protest spirits up was also fantastic. I also loved when the backup singers appeared out of nowhere in "Tor Kraft", and the way they kept following him around in such a tiny cramped space.

Robin: “Watching Vegard deflate slightly” - YES, that was brilliant! It was so subtle but so real. Vegard nailed this too!

Anna-Maija: The fact that they made a musical. The whole thing. My life is complete. For now, until they make their next thing.

2 - What were the funniest moments for you?

Eve: Oh gosh, I had several laugh-out-loud moments, which delighted me. Most of them were in the Riot Coordinator song, classic Ylvis WTF lyrics: “Can those morons even count?” and “We’ll tell the mayor that he’s fat/And then microwave his cat.” I also laughed when the song abruptly changed (“Excuse me, Mr. Riot Coordinator…”) and at Vegard awkwardly dragging away his podium at the end. Vegard as God repeating “Press conference” in that deep, booming voice also got me.

Robin: I almost died at “you have forgotten who you are!” That got a big belly laugh from me; I could not stop laughing at Vegard/God/Mufasa. I had another belly laugh when God casually brushed his hair away from his face while declaring how rich Norway is - how silly is that?! I also laughed a lot at Vegard dragging his soapbox away, that was pretty funny.

Anna-Maija: I loved the running gag with the huge things in Tor Kraft’s house. First we see the doorbell, which is so weird, you don’t really think it’s a huge doorbell but maybe just some contraption Kraft has designed. But then you gradually realise he just likes big things and treats them like they’re the most normal thing in the world… I love absurd jokes like that.

3 - What did you think of Bard’s portrayal of Geir Byberg?

Robin: (Okay. Deep breath, Robin. Calm centre. No meltdown.) Bård played this role sooooo flawlessly. There was no hint of irony or self-awareness; Bård pretty much disappears into Geir and becomes a wonderfully sympathetic character. And man, the emotional range on that guy. From Geir’s enthusiasm and sincerity when proposing the diving board, to his uncertainty and beginning discomfort at Tor Kraft’s. You can see him gradually lose control, and he looks so lost. Even the way he responds to “God”, the inflections he chooses in his voice. Bård is perfection in this. This is his best performance yet.

Eve: Heartbreaking!! Robin warned me that he was going to make me feel for Geir Byberg, but that scene by the lake where he is crying, before God shows up and shows him the way, was horribly sad. And also funny in its overdramatization, and I wonder what Geir Byberg thinks of that. I also thought Bard did a great job of portraying Geir as being earnest and excited about the project, and agitated and nervous as things go horribly awry. His performance had an such a boyish innocence to it.

Anna-Maija: I also love how he played the character sincerely. How can Bård Ylvisåker turn into someone so ordinary? He was really the straight man in this episode, and Vegard got to play the more eccentric characters. The only time he breaks his realistic performance is when he gives a puzzled look to the camera while visiting Tor Kraft.

4 - Vegard: Tor Kraft or Riot Coordinator?

Anna-Maija: While I’m a big fan of dark curls, enough is enough, Riot Vegard! “Seriously” though, both characters were clearly caricatures, even though Tor Kraft is a real person. I think I do prefer Kraft, because I just loved all the gags with oversized things as a representation of his megalomania. Even his name is so grandiose (Tor = Thor, Kraft = Power) and punchy - it would be suited to a Norwegian superhero! Also, Vegard is very cute as a geezer.

Eve: Riot Coordinator. As much as I like Tor's little hip thrust, and although I thought Vegard's choppy, perfectly-accented singing style there was fantastic, I think Vegard is perfectly suited to that march-to-battle intensity, and he did a good job showing the uncertain moments as well. And on a shallow note, that mullet-y hair and sideburns. I enjoyed those.

Robin: I gotta go with Tor Kraft. He is ADORABLE when he shows up to the press conference! Plus I love the difference between how Vegard plays Tor Kraft in all his pomposity at his house, and how he plays him all penitent and bashful at the press conference. Stellar work.

5 - What do you think of the opening vignette?

Eve: I REALLY love this. I was lucky enough to see it for the first time with another Ylvis fan who happened to be in town, which makes it extra special, but I find the music and visuals very compelling and I have a tendency to watch it 2-3 times before starting an episode. I love the stunning Norway scenery, the way the scenes change with the music, I love them doing their goofy IKMY-opener style dancing, and that one shot of them doing the arm moves through a break in snow-covered trees is a visual treat. But it’s the shot on the ferry that really takes my breath away -- the ferry moving, the snowy mountains in the background, the way the music ratchets up a notch and the brothers moving with the music and the ferry. It’s dizzying, in a wonderful way. Excuse me while I go watch it again....

Robin: I love this too!! First of all, I love the classical crossover music. I love how it starts off with this sort of ethereal sound, matching the vistas. Then the bass, the strings, and it becomes more and more melodic over the stunning scenery. I really, really love the ice caverns they were in. Then there’s the guys, and their simple yet intense dance (A+ Bård head tossing). I only wish there was more unobscured Bård solo dancing, and my obsession with symmetry can’t unsee Vegard’s malfunctioning right shoulder piping.

Anna-Maija: It’s beautiful and stunning! The music is so epic! I also love the scene on the ferry the most. I wish it was longer!

6 - What did you think of the storytelling?

Robin: I really like that they chose to tell a story in which there is no single villain. It’s easy, in politics, to make one person the fall guy. However, instead, Ylvis chose to make it clear that everyone had a hand in the mess. With Bård and everyone playing it straight with no winking to the camera, no one is the butt of the joke, and Geir’s sincerity takes center stage.

My other favourite thing was the motif of the diving board drawing. That little piece of paper grounded the whole story. I love that it was stuck next to Geir’s mirror, suggesting that the simplicity of that diving board partly reflects who Geir is, as well as what he wanted. When he brought it out all crumpled during “Byberg’s Lament,” it made Geir’s plight seem all the more tragic.

Eve: That is an excellent observation, about how they didn’t have a single villain. I liked how they handled the snowballing of the problem, starting with a bit of unease with Tor Kraft, to the siren call of the engineers, to the loud angry mob, building a crescendo to a peak after which Geir breaks down. And then his slow and tentative rebuild to sharing the blame and the community coming together for a happy ending. It was very well done. And honestly, I hope this episode brings Hamar a lot of tourist dollars to make up for the expense. :)

Robin: Hell, I wanna go to Hamar now and I can’t even swim, much less dive!

Anna-Maija: This is going a bit technical, but: the whole diving tower incident has the classic 3 act story structure. 1. Set up: Byberg suggests building a diving board to Hamar and the council agrees. 2. Confrontation - obstacles climaxing in a disaster: The costs keep rising, the townsfolk resist and finally a storm almost sinks the unfinished diving tower rising the costs to an ultimate high. Byberg is desperate. 3. Resolution: God appears to Byberg (ok this MAY not have happened in real life) and tells him what to do. He admits guilt, and so does everyone. A happy ending is wrapped up with footage from the opening of the new diving tower.

One of my favourite features of Ylvis’ comedy is that it’s so positive and gentle. They don’t need to trash people to be funny. Here again they make the people they portray very sympathetic, and I love how everyone takes the blame in the end.

In musicals, songs primarily have one of two jobs: they either further the action or they express the emotions or inner thoughts of characters. As for the songs in this episode, I would say that all songs bring the plot forward, with more focus on Byberg’s inner thoughts in Tango Problematique and Byberg’s Lament.

I just noticed that in the finale song, the room looks quite cold and gloomy, but once it’s evident that they’re all in this together, the sun starts shining. Subtle! I also love the 80s style freeze frame at the end of the song.

A Ylvis fan trip to Hamar - someone organise this please!

Robin: If we go to Hamar, you KNOW I’m getting on that diving board and singing at the top of my voice: “Hamaaaaaaar the thiiiiiiings I doooooooooo…” This is now a new goal in life.

7 - Did you catch any callbacks to earlier work or Ylvis-specific in-jokes?

Eve: One thing I was particularly amused to see was the giant spoons in the Tor Kraft segment. Vegard posted a photo on Instagram a long time ago (April 17, 2014, if you’re counting) of himself trying to eat a sausage with giant utensils. Do they just collect weird stuff and then find a way to work it into their videos? Also, it’s not a coincidence that Tor Kraft’s doorbell looks like a boob (recalling the copper on the wall in “The Cabin”), is it? Also, Geir doing a funny little awkward Ylvis run as he rushes off to the press conference.

Robin: I didn’t notice any in-jokes (on 4 views), but I do think that they played this as straight as they could, and any overt references to their past work would have detracted from the story as they wanted to tell it.

Anna-Maija: I finally came up with one! The deadpan look Bård gives to the camera at Tor Kraft’s place is very similar to his reaction to Asian kissing techniques in “Language of Love”.

8 - Any critiques? Was there anything that didn’t work for you?

Robin: I’ve watched it three times looking for something to be negative about, but honestly, there wasn’t a single thing that didn’t work for me. These guys have outdone themselves. Christian, Lars, Bård, Vegard and Ole Martin; they’ve struck gold with this.

Eve: I threw in this question because the reviews I saw were dice 5 of 6 so I figured there must be something off somewhere. But I'm not thinking of any complaints off the top of my head. I wondered if the humor might be a bit diluted, because they're cramming six songs into a single episode and we're used to them pouring a lot of creativity into a single music video. Maybe the laugh-out-loud lines are a bit more spread out this way, but the production and attention to detail are as high as we've come to expect from Ylvis. Was it Roger Ebert who judged movies by "Does this work achieve what it set out to be?" In that sense, "Stories from Norway" is a resounding success.

Anna-Maija: Lipsync in “Bybergs Lament” was not perfect. The subtitles didn’t have proper punctuation. Yeah, it was pretty flawless...

9 - Bard’s facial hair - real or fake?

Eve: Oh, pfft, there’s no way that’s real.

Robin: Not unless the entire two years of planning this show included growing this beard.

Anna-Maija: :D :D Agreed!

10 - Which character had the best costuming/makeup job?

Eve: God. For sure. He looked majestic.

Robin: I gotta go with Tor Kraft. Those chubby cheeks on Vegard are just adoooooorable.

Anna-Maija: Vegard is going to be such a cute grandpa! I also loved how Kraft’s eyes went all white when he was channelling his idea on the Etch-A-Sketch.

Eve: That was CREEPY! Although I was amused at how he seemed kinda surprised that it had worked.

11 - Who was this episode’s MVP?

Eve: It’s really a tie. Bård’s multifaceted portrayal of Geir was a joy to watch, and he put the heart into the story, but Vegard stole every scene he was in. “Pressss confferrenccceeee.” I’m still laughing. It’s so good to have them back!! I do want to throw in an honorable mention for the other singers in “Sink the Tower”. That approving nod from the Bikram Yoga lately after “We will cover the tower in shit” makes me laugh every time.

Robin: The onscreen MVP is definitely Bård for his superlative acting, for bringing his best vocals, and for making me care about a Norwegian deputy mayor I’d never heard of before Monday. That said, the REAL MVP award should go to Ole Martin Hafsmo. Everything in this episode was executed flawlessly and you have to give props to the man for that. Also, his direction undoubtedly helped bring that stellar performance out of Bård.

Anna-Maija: I’m also finding it hard to choose one MVP. Both Bård and Vegard had their role(s) to play and they succeeded in their tasks. I’d like to add writer Christian Lochstoer and definitely composer Lars Devik to the MVP category. What a dream team those five guys make! OMG I almost forgot choreographer Thea Bay!

Robin: So basically we’re saying everyone is MVP. I can live with that.

March Mayhem One-shots ~

I. Love. This. One. For. Today. 😊 because it’s one of my favorite ships that @bwayalexander recommended!!!!!

Also, i am not that good at French since I studied Spanish sooooo if I did something wrong then please tell me I hate when I mess things up!

“Babe wake up!’ Laf heard but didn’t respond as he turned over letting out a groan “Come on birthday boy we have a big day ahead of us. Don’t make me get re-enforcement.” John tsked giving the younger man one last chance. He sighed when he got no response.

“Alex! It’s time!” he yelled towards the door before stepping to the side. Laf didn’t even have time to think of what was going on, footsteps coming faster and faster until he felt a heavy weight on top of him. “Ow, what the hell?” “Wake up loser, it’s your birthday!” “If you could get off of me I would.” He murmured into the pillow. Alex looked back at John grinning before climbing off of the sleepy man.

“Ok, I’m up.” He sighed a small smile on his face. The two boys took a dramatic breath before singing a horrible cover of ‘Happy Birthday’ and pushing a small gift towards him. “Aw guys, you shouldn’t have!” Laf gushed tearing away the tissue paper and pulled out an apple watch “Wha- You really didn’t have to get me this!”

“We know that you said you didn’t want anything, but we couldn’t resist.” John beamed sitting next to laf on the bed “Well thank you both for this lovely gift.” Laf said giving both of them a kiss on the cheek “And, we have one more present for you.” “Oh, that is unnecessary!” He tried to argue but the two boys shook their head.

“No laf this will be great! Besides, you only turn 25 once.” “Yeah so stop being coy and get dress!” “Okay, okay!”

“Where are we going?” “See, if I tell you then it would ruin the surprise. “Lafayette groaned but still let him be dragged down the street by the boyfriends “You can’t see through that right?” John asked waving his hand in front of the blind man “No.” “Good.”

“Can I at least get a hint?” “It’s a place.” “That’s it? I only get that?” “Yes, now stop asking questions and enjoy this journey!” Alex said while John snickered in the background “I hate you both.” He mumbled but said nothing the rest of the way. He tried to analyze where the destination by listening to the world around it but all he got was the sound of traffic and the two boys talking in front of him

‘This is going to be a long day.”

They finally stopped making Laf shake in excitement. By now he was beyond thrilled to figure out where they took him “Ok, you ready?” “Yes! Show me already!” crowed Laf bouncing on his toes drawing a laugh from the others. He felt one of them step behind him and start to untie the back of the blindfold. Once it was off, the boy blinked a couple of moments getting use to the sunlight and looked at the sign in front of him.

“Ta-da!” John squeaked doing jazz hands in front of the building “Animal shelter? I-I don’t understand.” “Oh my god laf we’re getting you a dog!” Alex said rolling his eyes at his big goof “What? A dog?” Laf whispered looking at John to see him nodding his head enthusiastically before turning back to Alex so quick, you would have gotten whiplash “Ne joue pas avecmoi en ce moment.” He threatened “I’m not! We really are getting a dog.”

A high pitch squeal came from Lafayette ‘s throat as he ran over and hugged his boys “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” he cried before setting them down and running inside

“You sure this is a promising idea?” “Yes! Just look at him,” John stated pointing at the man walking around the kennel looking like a kid in a candy store. “You know he has always wanted one.” “Yes, but I don’t like dogs that much,” Alex grumbled but gazed at Laf with soft eyes. As much as he didn’t like dogs, he couldn’t deny that Lafayette looked so cute gushing over the variety of dogs.

It didn’t take long before the boys heard a gasp and the sound footsteps coming towards them “I found the one!” Laf approved pulling them both to the pin that held the dog. It was a Jack Russel terrier mixed with a chihuahua or as some people call them a “jackua.” It was tri-colored with brown, white and black. She only had one eye and seemed to be blind I that one.

“That one? You’re positive?” “Yes! She is perfect!” Laf jumped up and down. He could barely contain himself “Ok. I’ll go get the worker.”

The park was a lovely place to hang out with their new buddy. She laid her body in Laf ’s lap enjoying the attention she was getting. It was almost like she couldn’t get enough “What are you going to name her?” John asked patting her head. Loving the way she pushed herself into his hand. He could already tell that he was going to love this dog. “I don’t know yet,” he hummed scratching her back.

“How about Sophie?” “No,” “Lexie?” “Nuh-uh.” They paused for a moment thinking of more names “What about Millie?” Alex commented not looking up from his magazine “Yeah, yeah I like that.” Lafayette smiled looking down at his little baby. She looked up and laid her head on her stomach. Her eyes never looking away. His heart couldn’t handle all this cuteness “Little Millie.” He whispered before looking back up at his boys.

“Thank you, guys. I really appreciate all of this even though some of us,” he paused and looked at Alex who had a tiny blush “Do not care for dogs, you looked past that and got me what I have been wanting since I have moved here, and I could never repay you all.” “Well you could,” “Alex, “John warned but still had a smile on his face

“No problem baby. It was the least we could do. Happy birthday.” He beamed and leaned in planting a kiss on his lips with Alex following suit. The rest of the day went by very well. They went back home to find everything they needed for a dog. Laf shook his head but didn’t say anything. Just appreciating all the gifts his wonderful men have gotten him.

He spent the rest of the day taking selfies with Millie and the boys posting them all on Instagram. You could say that this was his best birthday yet.

Stranger Things Season 2 trailer shot by shot run down

aw look at my children doing normal children things can’t wait to see how long that’s going to last

so, the way that Dungeons and Dragons was sort of the running analogy last season, my guess is that this game is going to be the overlying symbolism for this season.

my boys all back together and happy again can’t wait to see how long that’ll last :’)

so if this is the analogy I’m guessing the “sword” is going to be the key to slaying the monster

again, the dragon probably = the monster

and if so, the fact that Dustin seemingly LOST this game sort of worries me...

case in point

this trailer took approximately 15 seconds to get me to say “oh no”

AS I WAS SAYING (okay so obviously from what we left off on last season and the trailers/ teaser we’ve gotten. we now know this season is going to deal with the aftermath of the Upside Down for Will as well as the entire community as rifts have been opened to other worlds)

so i’m assuming Will’s main arc this season is going to be his struggle with being split between two worlds, and though I understand why they did it I wish we could see more of Will apart from that but oh well)
