A month ago I went to Amsterdam and visited all the filming locations for Ted Lasso‘s „Sunflowers“, so I figured I‘ll finally put something together here.
First of all, basically all the scenes involving the majority of the Richmond himbos were not shot on location - their epic discussion followed by pillow fight was filmed in an abandoned hotel in London. (Info per David Elsendoorn). The same would go for Ted & Beard‘s room. Scenes on the bus or outside it were also filmed in Richmond.
Tumblr media
The only Greyhound who doesn‘t have his own larger plotline in the episode who was actually in Amsterdam was David Elsendoorn, because they did film the first scenes at Johan Cruijff (you know how to pronounce it now!) ArenA, the home of Ajax Amsterdam (which is also the one place I didn‘t have time to visit). They could have easily filmed that in London in a different stadium but I guess they didn‘t want to pass up the opportunity - and give David something to do on his home turf.
Edit: I visited 3 months later, so here‘s some pics from the ArenA, I couldn‘t find out which hallway they used/dressed up for the press interviews, but here‘s some shots from the stadium and the VIP lounge we see at the beginning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, first up is Roy & Jamie‘s adventure: Jamie takes him sightseeing against his will, and the first place they stop on is Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge). (They run up the street to that before.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edit thanks to @warriorhoneybee: Roy grabs Jamie’s wrist at Diamond Factory on Rokin and then tells him he can‘t ride a bike outside Lyppens Jeweler at Langebruugsteg.
They go around the corner to Oude Turfmarkt (which is what I took a picture of) for Jamie to teach him how. For Grandad!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fucking windmill they see before they lovingly gaze into each other’s eyes is De Riekermolen at the Southern end of Amstelpark, where they also cycle. (It‘s actually realistic for them to do that, it would be about half an hour between those locations by bike).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rebecca doesn‘t see the obvious bike lane (that doesn‘t actually exist there) and falls into the gracht at Raamgracht. Boaty McBoatface‘s houseboat is still there, they just had it dressed up a bit with plants and such when they filmed. (Unclear if anyone currently lives there). The interiors were shot in a studio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trent follows Colin to Prik night club (which was absolutely buzzing when I was there, I really want to go back).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then they sit at the Homomonument, the Pink Triangle memorial at Westerkerk, having that tearjerker of a conversation, before returning to party. (It walked that distance at night, it‘s a beautiful stroll and less than 10 minutes). When I visited someone had left sunflowers. 🌻
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leslie & Will first go to Hotel Prins Hendrik in the Red Light district (and steps away from Amsterdam main station) where Chet Baker died. They then make their way to Jazz Café Alto, which is just down the road from where Boom Chicago used to be on Leidseplein. (It‘s about 30 mins on foot between those two locations so they could have walked or just taken the tram for a few stops. The interiors were done at a studio though).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ted of course visits the studio-filmed fictional themed restaurant where he has a BBQ sauce induced, Corey Burton-narrated epiphany about triangles, but first he sees Vincent‘s „Sunflowers“ at Van Gogh Museum during Museumnacht (which btw would mean the episode is set first weekend of November). As you can tell they moved some things around, so at least currently the painting isn‘t hung on that beautiful blue wall anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a bonus, here is a picture of where Boom Chicago used to be when Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly performed there - Brendan also used to live above the McDonald‘s on Leidseplein just steps away for a while. And the other picture is the current Boom Chicago on Rozengracht, definitely go enjoy a show there if you can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway thus concludeth my trip around Ted Lasso‘s Amsterdam. I visited for the Boom Chicago Comedy Festival and fell in love with the city, it was … magical / gezellig. I will never forget it, but then again, some people get Alzheimer’s.

hi there! sorry, this is sort of a weird ask — feel free to ignore.
i’m just a queer trans person who’s wanted to transition for years but my family is not really on board with it. i was really hoping to go to uni and transition there, and Edinburgh is one of the places I’ve been aiming to apply to. except… the city seems so transphobic?^ as someone who seems to have been there/knows a bit abt the uni, i was wondering if you wouldn’t mind talking about the city a little bit, in regards to this, if you would up to it? weirdly enough i do know lots of people who live there, i just don’t know them well enough to ask stuff like this dhjgfdjfb
hi there anon!
so firstly, full disclosure that I haven't lived in Edinburgh for about a year now, but my sister still does so I visit all the time. Generally, I think the city is a great place to live if you're trans, or queer in general. There's a great queer scene with clubs and sober spaces, Edinburgh pride is great, Portobello (Porty) pride is well worth a visit and only a bus from the city centre, Glasgow pride is also great if you can get the train across. Events like the terf screening are absolutely an outlier, stuff like that is gonna happen in big cities just due to numbers - it is the capital of Scotland after all. Occasionally there are random terf stickers on lampposts, but i've seen at least twice as many pro-trans stickers about. In regards to that screening, the number of people who turned out to protest far outnumbered the people actually there to see the stupid film, and the protest was supported by the uni's staff pride network (i know because my sister was there on their behalf as an organiser/first-aider hah)
on that note, i think edinburgh uni is also pretty good for trans stuff - I wasn't out as trans yet when i was at uni, but I had friends who were trans and they didn't seem to have any issues on the uni/admin side of things. The uni has a pretty good student pride society, and as i mentioned, there's a staff pride network, so there's a solid bunch of staff who would be in your corner if you did have any issues. The uni's student support in general is okay - the general standard for that stuff honestly isn't great in the UK, and I wouldn't say edinburgh's is amazing, but they did help me out a couple of times (with non-lgbt stuff).
you'll probably know more about me than the applications process for uni in regards to chosen name etc, and it depends if you're applying through UCAS (in the UK) or if you're abroad, so i'll leave you to more knowledgeable people on that. I would say that if you apply in your chosen name, any post you receive about applications will be in the name you apply with, so keep that in mind if the people you live with aren't supportive - terribly sorry that you're in that situation, by the way. It really does get better once you're away from them.
in regards to transition, if you're wanting to be referred to a GIC, you'll likely be referred to Chalmers centre, which seems to have a waiting time of about 2 years currently - that sounds like a lot but from what i can gather, that's quite a lot lower than most places in the UK (i'm in NE england and my nearest centre isn't even taking referrals because their waiting list is 6+years long 😭). Once you're registered with a GP you should be able to ask them about a referral and they can give you more info.
overall I think that Scotland is probably just a better place to live if you're trans in the UK - scottish parliament supported self-ID (i'm actually unsure if this has come into effect yet, need to do some googling) and if they weren't under the UK gov, they were going introduce legal third gender options too. The SNP and scottish parliamentary partiers absolutely have some outspoken transphobes, but they're much more of an outlier than in westminster, so generally i think the outlook for trans people is just way more positive in Scotland - I'm certainly planning to move back there as soon as the circumstances line up for me. It's pretty scary everywhere in the UK right now in terms of policy (and general attitude, to an extent) but yeah i think overall Edinburgh and Scotland in general are your best bet.
If you have any more questions or anything i'm happy to chat! Absolute best of luck to you, no matter where you end up, both with your transition and uni in general 💜

Photo 2012 from similar interview (via Ralph's twitter).
Russell Senior and Ralph Parmar (aka Ralph Razor) wrote a musical about the UK Miners' Strike of 1984-85 called Two Tribes, featuring the hits of the day. They started before the Pulp reunion of 2011 and picked it up in earnest in 2012 through to 2013.
Obviously it never came to pass and I suppose there are many reasons things didn't work out. Afterall, they (Russell & Ralph together with various volunteers) worked hard on it and had it virtually ready to go by 2013 - judging by the information on the official TT84 and Ralph's personal twitter feeds. There was even a behind the scenes documentary being filmed. Then nothing.
In Russell's 2015 autobiography, he referred to it all as ill advised.
Info on the TT84 twitter stops in 2014, the year the film 'Pride' is released - and an announcement that there is a west end theatre musical based on the movie in the pipeline.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN TWO TRIBES GO TO WAR, A MUSICAL’S ALL THAT YOU CAN SCORE
13 Feb 2012
You might be forgiven for thinking that the UK in the eighties was filled with trench coat wearing yuppies, hanging out in trendy wine bars, yelling into ridiculously large mobile phones. You could even subscribe to the 'Noel Gallagher School of Ill-Conceived Interview Quotes', that it was all “very colourful and progressive”. You might even think that Thatcher was actually Meryl Streep.
Of course, the reality wasn't actually any of those scenarios, particularly if you were based in a mining community in the north of the country. Less 'upwardly mobile', industrial towns north of the Watford Gap and in Wales were literally fighting for their livelihoods, living hand to mouth, desperately trying to stop the singlehanded destruction of their communities by the government of the day.
Russell Senior might be best known as a founding member of Pulp, but along with the knowledge of how it feels to headline Glastonbury, he also has hands on experience of what the Miner's Strike was like to live through. Returning to Sheffield after University, he took an active role in the strikes as a Flying Picket.“Thatcher’s Britain was a savage place and we had seen the steel industry taken apart in a vindictive way,”he tells us,“My father was one of many who had been made redundant and I was unemployed. So when the miner’s strike came along, it seemed like finally someone was standing up for themselves.” “I heard on the radio that there was a big picket at Orgreave coking plant, so I walked the six miles from my house and witnessed first hand the brutality of the police. But when I went home and watched it on the news, the events of the day had been portrayed in a completely distorted way.
“I went to NUM headquarters on Vicar Lane and basically ‘volunteered’. It was a hotbed of activity and these big characters like Mick McGarthy (the Scottish miner’s leader) and Dennis Skinner were there. Nobody asked me for any credentials, so basically I blagged my way backstage into the situation room of the miner’s strike. And they were open friendly characters, not above exchanging a few words with a young lad.
“There was a big demo in Mansfield and they took me on the NUM bus sat behind Arthur Scargill. So I got something of a birds-eye view and was lucky enough to be at quite a number of the key demos and meetings during the strike, even accidentally ending up stood on the podium at one. And the miners were just open and friendly. I was just a kid tagging along, I don’t suppose I was really supposed to be there but nobody asked me to bugger off, probably assumed that I had some function. Later on I was one a group of radicals who went out in the middle of the night on ‘flying pickets’ and saw the kind of stuff that went on when there were no cameras there. So during the strike there was no week in which I wasn’t a witness to some of the key events including, the very poignant and dignified march back to work.”
As a witness to the reality of the strikes, those events have clearly stuck with Senior, however almost thirty years on, Russell's choice of media to convey the events might seem a little offbeat. Together with Ralph Razor, who's initial idea was the inspiration for the project, the Miner's Strike now sits alongside such subjects as the music of Abba and Queen as an all singing, all dancing, bona fide musical. Unconvinced? You aren't alone, initially, neither was Senior. “It started off as one of those ‘crazy ideas that might just work’.” Ralph says,“I liked the playful juxtaposition of the industrial grittiness with throwaway pop hits, but when I thought about it, I realised that the strike was a very dramatic time in history and it has a real revolutionary glamour about it. I mentioned it to a few friends who seemed to think that it could work, and they encouraged me to give it a go. I decided to approach Russell to see if he was interested in a collaboration, as I was aware that he had been active during the strike, and also I figured that his time spent as a musician wouldn’t do any harm either. I sent him an email briefly outlining the idea and his reply was, “This is a ridiculous idea, and I want no part of it”. He later relented and told me that “the sheer absurdity of the idea has won me over’” and he offered to meet up for a chat so that he could act as a “sceptical sounding board for the ideas... to save me making a complete fool of myself”.”
Within a couple of months, a draft of the first act was ready, but with the reformation of Pulp last year, the aptly christened 'Two Tribes' had to take a bit of a backseat for a while.“Going back to my old job took a year out of the play,” Senior tells us,“but now I’m back on it full-time.” Just in time, it seems, as the world premiere, or at least an act of the play, will be taking place at this year's Tramlines Festival in Sheffield – as Senior jokes, it's now“full steam ahead”. And whilst the musical's natural home might be in north, hopes are high that the show will tour further afield;“Sheffield is a great place to launch it. For a start, we are based here, and secondly the surrounding area is so steeped in the history of the strike it wouldn’t feel right to debut it elsewhere.” Ralph concurs,“However from there, we plan to take it as far as it can go; I suppose the dream would be to take it on tour, do the West End, Broadway and then turn it into a film or a TV mini-series.”
Whilst the production is very much, as Russell describes it,“a local play for local people”, our hopes of seeing Alex Turner donning a red wig and making jazz hands are systematically dashed by Ralph.“We’re trying to avoid the cheesy cameos at this stage,” he confirms, “so we won’t be trying to get Phil Oakey into a donkey jacket, or drafting in former members of Menswe@r to be extras in the battle of Orgreave”.There's still hope that Scargill will burst into song though, as we're warned by Senior to be“careful what you wish for...”
Combining the events of the strikes with the popular hits of the day comes with it's own constraints; whilst we'd all like to believe that Joy Division and The Smiths soundtracked the life of the average man, the truth is that the mass populous was more likely to be found whistling the Birdie Song and slow dancing to the strains of Renee and Renato (ask your Dad). Keeping with the 'everyman' theme might have provided it's own challenges, as Senior tells us he“hates all the songs in the play”,but it's not a view shared by Ralph, who states that keeping to the period aesthetic has“made it easier. All the songs that we have included would have been in the public domain at the point in which the scene takes place, so if a scene takes place in March 1984, we can use songs from that month, the month before, the year before, but not from anytime after that point. Certain tracks have been discarded, or not used for a particular scene, on that basis.” This attention to detail would directly lead our new favourite playwrights to the surprising inclusion of Black Lace on the soundtrack. “‘Agadoo’ was a massive hit in 1984, and would have been played at pretty much every single Working Mens Club party across the land that year, so it makes perfect sense to include it, although the scene in which we use it is possibly the darkest scene of the entire play. We don’t want to give the game away too much, but there is a scene in which four miners in the shower sing ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’.”
If all this leads you to fear that the subject matter is being treated lightly in any way, you can rest assured, that absolutely will not be the case. Perhaps we've never needed to consider the events of that period more – with high unemployment, public sector cuts, and the country in a deep recession, and the need to fully understand the implications of the strike was one of main motivations of both Razor and Senior. As Ralph says,“when Thatcher gets the Hollywood treatment, you know it’s the right time to launch an independent home grown drama about the Miner’s Strike...”.As we find ourselves in a similar economical and political climate, it's only with a bit of distance that we can truly begin to evaluate our history;“Chairman Mao was once asked what he thought about the French Revolution,”Ralph considers,“his reply was that it was too early to tell.” “At the time of embarking, it seemed like it might be a bit of a bit of a hard sell,” Senior admits,“but in a post-kettling world, a lot of young people will find it something they can relate to. The time feels very right.”

Noir Watch: Dial 1119 (1950)
Tumblr media
Watched:  05/24/2023
Format:  TCM
Viewing:  First
Director:  Gerald Mayer
I went into this film with low expectations and finished it absolutely knocked over by the script, direction and actors - not to mention the camera work, attention to costume, etc...  It's a dynamite package of a movie, and one I'd recommend for folks thinking of character detail done economically.
The movie takes place in near real-time as an escaped psychiatric patient steals a gun on a charter bus and then winds up taking a bar and its patrons hostage while things escalate outside.  It's part of the noir subgenre of hostage-dramas that probably started before The Petrified Forest, but found footing there and worked it's way into a thousand scenarios (check our Key Largo if you haven't prior).
The cast is mostly folks who were not mainstream stars in 1950, though some became household names.  In it's way, it's an ensemble picture, and feels influenced by theater of the first half of the 20th century, not least of which is the Pulitzer prize winning Time of Your Life.  Only interrupted by a psychotic gunman.
But the pieces are there.  We catch snippets of who each character is just enough so we wonder how they'll react to a gunman sure to kill them.  The young man waiting on word that his wife delivered their baby.  The lush in search of a man for the night.  The reporter who just quit.  The cranky bartender who doesn't think much of humanity.  The aging virgin and the man who is throwing sweet nothings at her, surely with motives both in the bedroom and out, but nothing to do with her.  Then there's the psychologist who wants to save the world and the cop looking to minimize the disaster.  And, of course, the menace of television (this being 1950).
William Conrad plays the bartender, Signal Watch favorite Sam Levene the psychologist, Leon Ames the Letch, and Barbara Billingsley's distinct voice and face will knock you out of your seat when she shows up in a bit part as an office admin for a newspaper editor.
Also expect character actor Argentina Brunetti and Dick Simmons as a roving TV reporter.
In true Hollywood fashion, the two leading women are both too attractive for what I think they're supposed to be, but both sell their roles like crazy.  Andrea King as the late-20's virgin trying to pass for 23 nails her part, and Virginia Field's lush is the movie's primary secret weapon.  Matched closely by the powder-keg-waiting-to-blow Marshall Thompson as the gunman.
SPOILERS
Bumping off Conrad as the turn to the second act was wild stuff and removed any sense of certainty to the film.  But Virginia Field's lush stole the show for me, maybe as crazy and erratic as the gunman in her own way, and more violently ready to live.  Her moment taking down the gunman was unexpected and perfect.  And, of course, Thompson's shocked and childish reaction to being gunned down - just the perfect character note to wrap his arc.
This movie would have made a great stage play, but then you'd miss out on the street scenes, the chaos below, the @#$%-up at the paper that almost gets them killed...  So, yeah, this works for me as a movie.  It would probably now be a mid-season TV cliffhanger somewhere, but I like that it's so self-contained and has only the info we need to care about the hostages and turns the knife for the returning GI's and what they went through at abroad and at home - and some should never have been given a gun.
Anyway, a great, tight film that I'll certainly re-watch.

trailer nonnie here, it probably won’t change your interpretation but I think it’s good info to know anyways; during the part of the bts where the projection is clearly and vibrantly blue and green, when they’re still setting things up but the projection is being actively broadcast behind the members, Hyuka points at it and says, quote, “how long is that cat gonna chase us? that cat’s been at it for four years.” so it seems the members view it as the cat/the same character. that could be because of the eye colors in that moment or because they were told them in a creative briefing, we can’t really know for sure.
my guess is that they had that second file with the orange and purple in case they didn’t like how much the blue and the green stood out, and they wanted colors that matched the video. it just kind of personally bums me out ‘cause one of my favorite things is piecing together all the visual references to the blue and green eyes across all their media—since there’s so many, and several in the BU too. I just know that I would’ve freaked out had they kept the blue and the green, in a different, more excited and a less confused way than the route they went with. I just kind of wish they had chosen to desaturate the blue and green instead of outright changing the colors
that’s really my only sadness about the trailer—other than that, I’m speechless at how amazing it was, and I really recommend the bts because I had assumed they filmed some things certain ways but they were so dedicated and creative and I’m so impressed
(for reference: in the bts video the orange and purple file is at 1:53, where it’s clearly showing a profile file with those colors rather than it being projected—adding this ‘cause when I first saw the blue and green at the start, I thought “oh, they color graded it in post” and not “oh, they had an alternate file”)
ah, thank you for the additional info! i guess personally... i don't really expect them (the members) to keep up with the story in great detail (since they are not involved with the comic & prose) or to even necessarily distinguish between what is canon & what is referential, & i tend to take any offhand comments they make about it with a grain of salt, but... yeah, we don't know what they're briefed on beforehand unless they tell us. i was also a little disappointed, at least initially, that the eye colors weren't the same, but it is what it is & i decided not to perceive it as a "lesser" version of a reference just because they didn't go with blue & green (because again, the trailer itself is not part of the canon).
i have seen a few clips from the behind the scenes & was also impressed by how much was done with practical effects <3 they did a great job!

Tender Run Through Memories: You are crazy, my child. You must go to Berlin (2018)
extracts from a Berlin travel guide i worked on during my first internship. i was spellbound by Berlin’s entrancing mix of rich culture & gritty club-scene. i fell in love with the city, bit by bit, and i spent one month reviewing its art, museums and vegan food. during my time there, David Bowie kept ringing in my ears, as it was one of his soul-cities 🌼 you got the width of my tongue name on the sun 🌷 velvet goldmine, you stroke me like the rain, snake it, take it, panther princess you must stay 🦋
Feature: Introduction to Berlin
Much has been written about Berlin’s blend of history, outstanding culture and infamous nightlife. Proclaimed the capital of cool, Berlin is where you can “go to all-night parties, attend a screening of an arthouse film and an anti-Trump demonstration within 24 hours”, as The Times noted. Some talk about Berlin’s fall from grace, wondering if the city’s growing popularity diminished its authenticity and turned the city into a growingly expensive tourist trap.
From Marlene Dietrich, who sang “I still keep a suitcase in Berlin” with a piercing longing, to the rebellious singer Iggy Pop, who called Berlin his home, many artists have voiced their love for Berlin.
“You are crazy, my child. You must go to Berlin” (Franz von Suppé)
Affordable, buzzing, wild and carefree, Berlin is a symbol for tolerance and open-mindedness. Unlike other metropolises in Europe, it’s a place where you can relax. Berliners do not rush. They take their time, basking in the sun with their low-cut T-shirts and heavily tattooed arms, flicking back their occasionally bright-coloured hair.
Nights in Berlin are freaky, intense and fiery. The club culture is exhilarating; anything goes. Berlin is a techno capital: notorious DJs, outrageous raves and 36-hour long parties. There are plenty of clubs to choose from, perhaps the most infamous being Berghain, which pays the same taxes as theatres and concert halls, as it is considered to produce work of cultural significance.
It’s magical to lose yourself in Berlin’s night scene, in the hazy beat of electronic music and in the half-clothed masses. There is a strong sense of acceptance. You are free to be yourself. You won’t be judged.

“Berlin, the greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine” (David Bowie)
Berlin is a home to artists and a paradise to emerging creators, who come here to pursue their dreams. There are around 20,000 artists living and working in the city, lured by cheap rents, the city’s libertine energy and the massive studio spaces. The street art mirrors the city’s fantastic art scene.
Berlin is bursting with culture and history. It has 175 museums, even more than New York. It’s an open museum too: from the Berlin Wall to Checkpoint Charlie and to the Nazi book burning site at Babelplatz, Berlin’s unique history can be seen by foot.

“Berlin is cheap, but sexy” (Klaus Wowereit)
Berlin is the cheapest capital city in Western Europe. While it is getting expensive, perhaps because of its touristy appeal, it is the perfect place for backpackers, artists and adventurers for now. You can get a cup of coffee for €2, a lunch for less than €10, a pint of beer for €2-4, a day travel pass for €6,50 and a decent double room in a hotel for €50 per night. What is more, some of the attractions of Berlin are free, such as East Side Gallery, Raw Tempel and Yaam Beach.

Paris is always Paris and Berlin is never Berlin! (Jack Lang)
Nonetheless, Berlin is constantly changing, you never know what to expect. You need to experience it yourself.

Reviews: Art, Beauty & Vegan Food
Beyond Compare: How African and European Sculptures Carve the Essence of Humanity
There are few exhibitions as fascinating as Bode Museum’s “Beyond Compare”. “Beyond Compare” brings together, compares and analyses the sculptural traditions of two continents by displaying, side by side, 70 African sculptures, along with renowned masterpieces from Byzantium, Italy and central Europe.
Despite their radical stylistic differences, it is interesting to observe how the artworks touch the same themes. They illustrate the frailty of the human experience, exploring subjects such as death, beauty, motherhood, power, spirituality and love. Cultures apart, humans seemed to be moved by the same matters; it is remarkable to see the dainty, gothic sculpture of Madonna, Virgin of Mercy, appear next to a seemingly raw sculpture which represents a power figure from Congo. The second sculpture looks quite crude next to the carefully-carved Madonna, but both were made with the intent to ask for protection, to invoke forces that are beyond the physical world.
In the exhibition’s first slide, it is noted that the works displayed were made by human beings, and not by “cultures”, “tribes”, “ethnic groups” or “nations”. It is important to keep this in mind while strolling through the museum, as this exhibition is not an objective comparison between two different cultures, but a soft reflection of human nature.

Enjoy the silence in Museum der Stille
Museum der Stille (“Museum of Silence”) is a unique invitation to embrace the silence in the middle of the lively district of Berlin Mitte. It’s a small, free and beautiful exhibition of paintings and architectural models that illustrate different stages of stillness. It is lovely, subtle and, above all, silent. In the middle of the museum, there is only one piercing painting of a woman who’s gazing through you, with a simple wooden bench in front it. The walls are a deep, warm red and the light is dimmed. The profound silence makes the experience sincere and intense; you are struck by a strong feeling of here and now. While at the beginning you might be put off by the awkwardness of hearing your feet clumsily shuffling through the museum, you will gently ease into the museum’s serenity, if you let yourself. For once, you do not have to rush. It’s enough just to take it all in.
Even after leaving the museum and walking back into broad daylight, the spell of silence is not broken. You might be finding yourself humming Depeche Mode and thinking that they were right, perhaps. It is enough just to enjoy the silence.

CWC Gallery: exploring the modern and the contemporary
If you have a soft spot for art, but find most museums to be too sombre and a little old-fashioned, CWC Gallery might just be the place for you. “CWC” stands for “Camera Work Contemporary” and, as its name suggests, it focuses on contemporary and slightly modern positions found in photography, painting and sculpture. The gallery is in the heart of the bohemian Berlin-Mitte quarter and, while stylish and elegant, it isn’t pretentious and it has an easy-going vibe. It’s also completely free!
The first floor is a homage to the 1990s that recreates the dreamy allure of the era. Wandering around, you are charmed by goddesses of the ‘90s: photos of the iconic Iman, Gisele Bündchen, Uma Thurman and Halle Berry, all captured by Micheal Comte, are plastered on walls. Their half-smile and bouncy curls will leave you longing. You can soothe your temporary nostalgia by moving onto the next floors, where you can admire a beautifully curated and impressive exhibition of modern works of art, some of which display a striking social commentary.
In the same building, you can also find quite an interesting permanent exhibition about The Kennedys, which explores the political success and the private life of John F. Kennedy. The admission fee is 5€.
Address: Auguststraße 11–13, 10117 Berlin Closest stations: Oranienburger Tor, Oranienburger Straße. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 10:00 -18:00 Saturday 11:00 – 18:00. . Prices: Free. Website: https://camerawork.de/ Contact: [email protected] Tel 030 24048614

Yoyo FoodWorld: the oldest vegan fast-food joint in Berlin
Yoyo FoodWorld is a hip fast-food joint on the Gärtnerstrasse 27 and the first and oldest vegan fast-food in Berlin.
For almost ten years, Yoyo hasn’t been your typical fast-food. Its atmosphere is similar to one of a quiet, cozy indie bar. Indoors, the light is slightly dimmed and there are photos of famous musicians and philosophers plastered on the restaurant’s walls, along with cult film posters that would make any film student swoon. Soft rock music plays in the background. The outdoor sitting is just as delightful, as the area surrounding the joint is lovely and inviting.
The food is cheap, fantastic and sure to satisfy your cravings, as the options are varied. They have 3,50€ burgers, 6,50€ pizza, 5€ wraps, 6€ schnitzels, 5€ seitan Currywursts, 3,80€ sea food and meatballs at the price of 8 for 3,20€. All the dishes are deliciously vegan and would work perfectly as comfort food or hangover food. It’s also the place to take your friends to convince them that vegan food is tasty.
Another highlight is the toilet, which is exceptionally cool. It’s filled with queer stickers, feminist and political statements, colourful graffiti and carefully scribbled love poems; ideal for a quirky Instagram post.
Address: Gärtnerstraße 27, 10245 Berlin Closest stations: Samariterstr., Frankfurter Tor, Warschauer Str. Opening hours: Monday- Thursday 12:00 - 23:00, Friday - Saturday 12:00 - 00:00, Sunday 12:00 - 23:00. Prices: € Website: http://www.yoyofoodworld-berlin.de/ Contact: [email protected]

Get fettundbetrunken at the Chaostheorie
Chaostheorie is the first vegan cocktail bar in Germany. Their slogan is “fettundbetrunken”: “fat and drunk”, so expect to find a perfect mix of cheap comfort food and funky alcohol.
Onto the first part of their motto, “fat”: the food is fantastic. From a veganized traditional cuisine to more modern dishes, the highlights are juicy currywursts, enormous doner kebabs, fries with dripping dips, pulled mushroom burgers and thick cheese meatball sandwiches. To sweeten things up, the selection of house-made cakes is flavourful to say the least. The Oreo cake, smooth and crunchy at the same time, is a popular favourite. The soft drinks are also a dream: creamy milkshakes, Snickers, Manner or Oreo flavored, and rich freakshakes. You can settle for classic options, too: late macchiato, hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows, coffee with caramelized milk and hot applesauce with cinnamon and vanilla soya milk.
Now, onto the second part of their motto…”drunk”! You can sip traditional cocktails or try out the bartender’s specials: experimental and refreshing mixtures such as Julep Blue, bourbon, blue curaçao, ginger ale and limette.
The place itself is cozy: dim light, soft indie music, shelves stacked with books and a lovely photobooth perfect for making memories.
Even if you’re looking for a quiet afternoon with good food or for a tipsy evening, in Chaostheorie you can find the things you thought you’d never enjoy again once you went vegan.
Address: Schliemannstraße 15, 10437 Berlin. Closest Stations: Prenzlauer Alle, Stargarder Str., Schönhauser Allee. Challenge yourself at the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art
The Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art is a remarkable contemporary art institution located in the Berlin’s picturesque district Mitte. The building is a sight itself and it has a sophisticated allure, tall and elegant. The outdoor café has a lovely Parisian appeal and it’s where the hip tattooed artists you might have seen on Tumblr sip their coffees in the afternoon.
The works of art exhibited in the Institute are complex. You can marvel at political activist art, video art, visual art or interactive art. They’re also controversial, with people either excitedly praising them or dismissing them as meaningless. The exhibitions are divided into rooms: in some rooms you might be deafened by booming nature sounds, while in others you might be asked to take off your shoes and wander into an empty, soundproof room, where you’d be faced with a gut-wrenching documentary about the condition of the modern black artist. However, you never know what to expect, as the exhibits change constantly. Nonetheless, the works of emerging young artists are unique and do not hold the reassurance of traditional art: they challenge you and shake you. They draw out a strong response, be it positive or negative.
Finally, even if you occasionally roll your eyes at modern art, you should give the KW Institute a chance. At least one of the works of art displayed might move you.
Address: Auguststraße 69, 10117 Berlin. Closest stations: Oranienburger Tor, Oranienburger Straße.  Price: 16€ general entrance, 10€ reduced. Opening hours: Monday: 11:00 – 19:00. Tuesday: Closed. Be Here, Be Queer at the Schwules Museum
The Schwules Museum is the world’s first gay museum, originally opened in 1985. It exhibits the violent history and the injustices the LGBTQ community endured in the past, as well as Berlin’s current queer life.
Schwules is not your typical queer museum. If you expect it to be bustling with colour and rainbows, you might be taken aback. To an extent, it is exceptionally colourful, with cheeky illustrations of young gay couples kissing, soft porn photos and neon slogans about love. But a more serious tone is predominant. The permanent exhibitions also depict gay history milestones, such as the feminist revolution, the composition of the first feminist songs of the German movement or the protests of a working group of lesbian teachers. In the middle of the museum, there’s a memorial dedicated to the LGBT people who were killed in concentration camps. Their names are written in blood-red. You will also shudder upon entering the museum, where you can see a lengthy list of countries where homosexuality is currently considered a punishable crime.
It is important to go to the Schwules Museum because you will be reminded of how painful history is and how the free world we live in required sacrifices. And how, for some, the world still isn’t free.
It is not allowed to take pictures, which at first might be quite annoying, as your initial impulse might be to want to immortalize everything. However, this might help you take in all the information and carefully weigh what you’re seeing.
Finally, is important to go to the Schwules Museum because you will be reminded of how painful history is and how the free world we live in required sacrifices. And how, for some, the world still isn’t free.

Sun and wholesome food at The Bowl
The Bowl, self-proclaimed a “clean-eating restaurant”, is the perfect place for a cozy lunch with your friends or for a breakfast date with a book. They only use fresh, seasonal, healthy and gluten-free products. Everything is fully sustainable and vegan. They even use natural sugar! And, truthfully, the food is indeed full of flavour and it leaves you with a sense of freshness. They have a great variety of bowls: from rich breakfast bowls filled with sweet fruit, raw chocolate and creamy soy yoghurt to lavish plates with roasted vegetables, mashed avocado raw crackers, zucchini and smoked paprika.
The desserts are a treat, as well. The highlights are the lush vanilla almond cake, with coconut blossom sugar, raw chocolate and coconut strawberry and bananenbrot, with grilled banana, granola, warm strawberry sauce and raw chocolate.
While it is a bit pricey, 6,50 € for breakfast bowls and around 10 € for the lunch specials, the naturalness of the food, its filling base and vitamin-rich toppings make it all worth it.
The dishes are perfectly Instagrammable and the colourful variety of vegetables and legumes doesn’t even need a filter. While enjoying your wholesome food, you can bask in the sun in front of the large windows and observe the buzzing Warschauer Straße, with hazy, synth-pop music unfolding in the background.
What is more, on the ground floor of the same building where Bowl is, you can find Veganz, a plant-based supermarket with an impressively wide range of products, from cheese and ham slices to cashew cookies, ice cream and the finest chocolate cream.

Is it possible to like anything? Mixed thoughts on morality, turning a blind eye and "The Matrix"
I care a lot about media, and communication. As a guy that has some issues talking about exactly how he's feeling and has low social energy, things like shows, movies and books were a lot more important and relevant to my formative years than interaction with other people – not that I didn't have friends on my teen years, I did, just. Well, a lot of stuff to consider at that time that is irrelevant to this stream of consciousness. Something that I also care about is the message said media brings, and how that is inherently linked to who wrote, or directed the piece of media. This brings question to some of the internet's most infamously discussions: is it "ok" to like something made by someone that does very questionable decisions? I honestly don't have a definitive answer for that. More often than not, this kind of discussion feels to me to be in a vacuum in the internet, or of less politically inclined people. There are good articles out there, but they never seem to demand you not watch something, but to make people reflect on the bad writing, direction or production something got. Which I think is the way to go. Most of what I read and watch of radical left doesn't even mention such an issue with representation and how it should be completely isolated and burned to the ground, as I'm afraid they're more concerned with some more "tangible" problems, like the rise of imperialism, neoliberalism and fascism and imperialist and neoliberal feminism as a tool to maintain the capitalist system, often times built by people of color and resources from the "Southern" countries, and maintained cleaned and pristine by women of color (VERGÈS, 2019)¹.
I'm just a guy in his mid twenties with a degree in graphic design and a thesis in communication design. I didn't study political science in university. So I think I can do my part by talking about communication, then. Also I will try not to pull info out of my ass.
As some people might know from now, Matrix "4" Resurrections' trailer launched this week, and with that, some people were kind to remind past's fuck ups of Lana Wachowski regarding race in many of her works, like Sense8, Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas. Listen, I can't ignore the fact that the decisions made in these films are in the very least, questionable and distastful, specially regarding Asian people. Also she really out there rocking dreads, which I'm not even gonna get into, as I think it's already very well established why that's not a good look for white people. I only watched maybe one episode of Sense8, but this article here sums up pretty well what's weird about it. It also brings a good message by the end.
So, can you like anything without being morally crushed by what you know is right? Can you enjoy a piece of media that is flawed by the creator's White Gaze/Straight Gaze/Cisgender Gaze? I admit I have a hard time dealing with feelings of morality. It feels rather individual and super subjective on most accounts, and doesn't leave out (ironically?) a lot of nuance for different cultures and practices in the world. I wanna talk about that more in the future. Either way, about media, I'm of the opinion that you can enjoy those things if you wish to. Fuck it. Make it your own. Be critical of what you consume, as most things we do are made under the wing of big corporations owned by people that don't care about us, if we need screen time or actually be portrayed as a human being.
If anything, I would like to plead that people pay more attention to the independent side of media creation, if possible. The internet has its advantages in that regard. Don't lock yourself in on Netflix and [insert other streaming services here] and its desperately neoliberal vision of queer people. It's hard, but there's many POC and LGBTQIA+ folks that work hard to bring better stories for people just like them. Look for POC that make books and short films and documentaries. By comparison, it will be easy to spot how flawed The White Gaze makes when telling a story.
I'm gonna talk a little about The Matrix (1999) below, so I'm gonna do one of those fancy "Keep reading" right now.
So, I re-watched The Matrix (1999) yesterday and found the plot with Cypher turning against the other members of the Resistance as a pretty good analogy of what most people live their lives currently, under capitalism and overconsumption: Willing to throw your group under the bus, to literally destroy the remains of human existence that are still left, for the comfort of being blissfully ignorant. "I wanna be rich, and someone important, like an actor", he said to Agent Smith, that probably wouldn't fucking do that even if the plan did the way they wanted to. I like to believe it was the greed of the few that brought down humanity by their own creation in the Matrix universe, but unfortunately that is not brought up, in that case, bring in that "humanity" as a whole did it. There's another scene, when Agent Smith is alone with Morpheus, where he monologues about how "humanity" is a "cancer" for the Earth, for "abusing all the resources from an area and have no way to survive but to move to another area". This again shows the lack of perspective from The Wachowskis, blaming humans, that have existed for thousands of years, for the environmental atrocities that capitalism, that has only existed for a couple hundred years, has caused to the planet.
Like I said, it is okay to like things that can be questionable. I like this slip that the character Cypher is. He is the embodiment of a lot of issues and he is inherently opposite of our "good guys" characters in Matrix. I can still be critical of their lack of eyesight on what – and who – is really killing the planet, and their very distasteful idea of going post-racial when the fact is that race still very much matters.

IT’S ALMOST HALLOWEEN
I know I have like a bajillion moments that are all my “favorite thing P!ATD ever did,” but Halloween 2008 seriously ranks way up there.
youtube
THE SONG & VIDEO:
Rock Sound asked Ryan in fall 2008 what his nightmares were like as a kid and he said “I was walking through a jungle and there was Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man walking around too. I don’t remember what happened; I just remember that they were always there.”
A fan who was hoping to meet the band after one of the mid-October shows was told by Zack that the guys wouldn’t be coming out of their bus because they were busy getting drunk and writing a Halloween song haha. I saved a note of that because I didn’t think we’d ever get to hear it... I was just going to add it to a list of things that I hoped would get leaked someday.
Right before the St. Louis show the band posted on their blog: “we’re shooting a video ourselves for a halloween song we wrote, and need supplies/suggestions, drop them off tomorrow and you might see them again before the 31st. it’s almost halloween!!” And then they added the edit: “we will be in St. Louis so bring any halloween stuff to the show, the video will be shot tonight and monday.”
the main rumor was that they were filming a Nearly Witches video.
it sounded like the party scenes were filmed after the St. Louis show. idk if Dashboard Confessional had much to do with this, but guys from The Cab & Plain White T’s were definitely there.
PATD had the 20th off, so that's when they filmed the outdoor stuff near St. Louis. Ryan told Kerrang that the band went camping while they made the video. Zack complained the next day in Minneapolis about his bug bites ha.
The picture above was posted on the band’s blog on October 24th with the caption “We wrote a song. We made a video. We did it all by ourselves.” Their next post a couple days later had the video.
You can see more of their blog posts here... the “Everybody SCREAM!” post on October 11th could show they had some lyrics done, but it was posted as a caption for a Ghostbusters edit. (The dates I’m listing could all be one day earlier or later btw depending on time zones & what you qualify as the next day... like I think 2am is still the previous day).
It’s Almost Halloween happened towards the end of the Pretty. Odd. cycle, so Ryan was trying to do more of the singing. The song also sounds closer to what The Young Veins did since that’s the stuff Ryan & Jon were writing at the time.
right before Halloween you could download the song from FBR’s webstore. The CD also got on there but I think that was a mistake because it was taken down.
a friend sent me this recent interview with Spencer that everyone else has probably already seen... there were a couple new bits of info in there that were fun to hear!
A few fans had already started making their own versions of the video before the contest was even announced.
CONTESTS / PROMOS / “THINGS I DID NOT WIN”
Fans could vote on buzznet for which band member had the best costume.
Northern Downpour started their Halloween video contest a bit earlier than the FOE one (as in before Halloween lol). NDP’s contest was different, but the entries were still entertaining (here’s the winner & second place video).
People created SO many fun videos – here are some that are left.
Friends Or Enemies waited until like Halloween or the next day to announce their dance off contest... I just remember it felt like funny timing for making a video about how it’s almost Halloween. But here’s the announcement: “Since the band was new to the whole synchronized dancing thing, the Panic dudes want to see if you can do it better. Make a video to ‘It’s Almost Halloween’ with your own moves & upload it to this group now. The band will be judging & the video w/the best dance will receive some of the costumes worn in the ‘It’s Almost Halloween’ video. People wearing costumes will get more points.”
I would have absolutely loved to win Bden’s cape, but I’m also kind of grateful now that the deadline was too soon for a lot of us to get our potentially embarrassing videos planned & submitted.
Here’s the winning video. And then here’s the band’s message to them and the bundle of prizes they won:

THE SHOW(S):
The first time PATD played It’s Almost Halloween live was at the October 29th show. They also played it on October 30th (I liked this video the best but this one’s good too). The band had pumpkins onstage during the shows leading up to Halloween, but they added more decorations + costumes for the actual Halloween show.
this tombstone was the best decoration haha.
the first 1,000 people at the Halloween show got a cd of It’s Almost Halloween (it looked like the one in the black envelope in the picture above).
Brendon threw candy into the crowd from the pumpkin buckets :)
Jon & Spencer abandoned their masks after they played the first song (It’s Almost Halloween). Jon also had this hat at the meet & greet that he wore onstage for a bit (along with a beard for a short time).
Ryan skipped his hood but was stuck trying to play guitar with toilet paper arms. Here’s a comment he later made.
Brendon loved his cape so much that it made me so happy. Fans talked about seeing him playing frisbee in the parking lot before shows in late October – he’d be wearing his regular clothes but had his cape on. He had to take it off after the second song during the show... and then his glasses disappeared too (but at least his shirt still had fake blood).
Brendon sometimes changed the lyrics in That Green Gentleman this season, so he did it at this show too. He also messed with the Shout lyrics.
here’s a playlist of some videos from the Halloween show.
anything I post from Halloween 2008 will end up in this tag.
I combined some fan videos from the Halloween show to get a general idea of the night:

Hobbit Soulmate Pt 29
Tumblr media
“I told you,” Lee said making you roll your eyes inside the taxi that was called for the both of you and a string of colorful apartment buildings you were approaching not very far from the studio at all. “That one’s my building.”
“Not bad.” You said and climbed out once parked as he paid. To the door he led you unlocking it to let you in flashing a quick wave to the woman in the office who returned a flinch of a wave and looked you over. Anxiously you smoothed your fingers through your hair laying over your chest in entering the lift another couple exited grinning to the assumed new neighbors they didn’t recognize. “Maybe I should cut my hair when I get back.”
Lee, “Up to you, I love your hair, if it helps.”
Smirking at him you said, “I don’t mind changing my hair. Nearly every role I’ve had till the Selkie one had me in a wig to hide my curls. Even Darkness Falls had me straightening my hair. Let me keep the color though. And the Ring just played up my hair to make me look crazy.”
Down a grey wood lined hall he led the way to one of the last apartments he unlocked and let you inside. From the front hall the laundry was closest to the door with the kitchen behind that open and facing the carpeted living room empty. Past that were the twin carpeted bedrooms with large windows and decent sized closets separated by a shared bathroom. “Nice, really nice,” you said eyeing the un-inflated air mattress still inside the box left in his chosen room, the larger one.
“Told you,” With a nod he said, “They have some flyers downstairs for some of the vacant apartments if you’d like to send them to Richard.”
“Sounds good,”
With a grin he looked you over and said as it drooped, “You really didn’t want this job, did you?”
“It’s a great show, from the little I know about it. Just so used to being ambushed with mystery roles lately I suppose. I’m glad, Rich will be happy I can get paid to be out in Canada too. Suppose the reads will eat my vacation time up.”
“It won’t be that bad.” You nodded and he said, “Let’s go drop by the office, they’ll be glad to hear someone else might want to rent here, might even show you a few more layouts.”
“Oh yes, just what I need. More raised hopes like the guard who I now have lied to on staying home for months.”
Lee smirked at you, “The past two reads have been in New York, come on, you get your days off still.” Stealing a quick hug drawing you along to the door to show you out again. The woman was busy to not be able to show you open rentals in waiting for another couple who made an appointment already, but shared all the possible info on what would be required to rent here and saw you leave her sight. While waiting for the food you ordered at a restaurant Lee watched you use the payphone on the wall to call the airport to confirm the next flight time to New York. From which you sighed once hung up and walking back you flashed him a grin, “Five hours, they will have our tickets ready for us at the desk when we get there.”
“I’m sorry. You can drag me around all month if you like in payback.”
Shaking your head you said, “Maybe we could find a second hand shop nearby. Find you some chairs at least. Possibly some pop up tables.”
That was the plan and post meal conveniently fifteen minutes from the apartment you found a shop and in a chuckle at your own insistence a pair of round lounge loveseats in charcoal grey Lee relented accepting your help in decorating his place. To go with those a set of three triangle tables in a trio of heights enabling tucking them under the largest was added to the mix and the giggling shop keep took your answer of being able to carry the purchases home yourself as a chance for her son to earn his daily pay by using the shop truck to help you take the purchases on the short drive just a few blocks over.

Down to the bustling corners of town you hadn’t been in far too long once again that favored shoe shop welcomed you with milling familiar Queens from the club you dropped in on when in town all flashing waves from their seats a bit busy mid adjustment of their choice of shoes to come greet you just yet granting you a free path to the Queen you wanted. “Jaqi Pear!” Dolly again smiled and hurried around the counter having just come out from the back office there to the bell and gave you a tight hug, “There you are! I saw you in the papers with Lee at that premier. I cannot stand horror flicks but Madi has promised to watch it for all of us and show how amazing we all know you were in it.”
That had you giggle and say, “Not sure how amazing I’ll be for her, I was told not to blink at all in my later scenes.”
Still she looked you over asking, “So, I know you haven’t worn through those shoes yet.”
“No, I was wondering if Lucy and Cher was free.”
That had her gasping, “Your hair?”
You nodded, “They want it to about boob level, when it’s straight, so I figured try to cut it now so in January I could possibly have them help me lighten it to brown.”
Dolly, “For a role I hope, your hair is perfect already.”
“Thank you. Ya, Lee got me wrangled into a tv show up in Canada, last minute of course their main girl dropped out so they needed another crazy lady for his baby sister.”
Dolly nodded her head calling out, “Madi, watch the shop!” Taking your hand to guide you two shops over past a dress shop to a hair salon, half with Queens fixing their wigs on stands secured to vanities and the other half with those working their outgrown natural hair in actual salon stations. “Lucy, Cher!” The two ladies giving tips to a young Queen in training for her first pageant fell silent and smiled seeing who she was bringing to see them with Lucy flashing the purse you had given them on her day to use it still in pristine condition.
“Hello our lovely Lady Pear!” Cher said leading the way to you in the open walkway between the split of the stations. Bending to claim a hug of her own followed by Lucy’s.
Lucy, “What brings you to our little corner?”
Dolly, “Someone needs a haircut.”
Their jaws dropped and you said, “Show starts filming in January, but I figure we could cut it now, see how they like the length when it’s straight before worrying about dying it.”
Cher smoother her fingers through your hair gently easing it straight, “How long?”
“Boob level, roughly when straight.” You said holding your hand to where Tracy had pointed out the original girl had hers. “Which straightening it will be-,”
Lucy cut you off, “So much fun, we have been dying to get our hands on those curls. What color did they want it?”
“I was thinking deep brown, I didn’t tell them but I have a stunt double role afterwards where I’ll need to go blonde,”
Cher, “How blonde?” You pointed at Dolly and they both went, “Ooh,”
Dolly, “Your eyes will be stunning with platinum hair.”
“I figure lightening from brown to blonde will be easier than all in one go.”
Lucy, “You are right there.”
Cher smiled guiding you to her empty station, “You just relax, and let us work our magic.” A few snaps and rings were removed with a group of straighteners brought over to help straighten the sections of your hair that was divided up to ease the job. All over still a bit irritated and puffy the sheets of hair settled around you and in the reflection a bit closer to your elbow the hair was cut for a first look over sure to spring to your shoulders once curled again that the group carefully inched up a bit more to a more playful length in the front sloping down in the back to ensure when curled at least you could still tie it back.
“Thank you, so much.”
Lucy smiled saying, “They will love it this length, plus you still have so much hair to play with still, and when you are ready for that color let us know. We will find the right shade for you.”
Cher, “And don’t you dare bring out any money, you don’t pay here for some trimming.”
“It took over an hour-,”
Cher, “Nope, not a peep, now you go and show off your new length to the streets, and you better strut your stuff.”

Lee was stunned to say the least, but liked that it still had some give to it and couldn’t help but laugh seeing it curly again in a poof angered and looming barely to your shoulders relaxing a bit over the evening while he was off to a late shift on a temp job for some spare cash. Papers were signed and in two weeks the first read was held with a check of the length the Producers and Director approved of before introducing you to the rest of the cast. 65k an episode was contracted thanks to your lawyer who ensured to add the clause on completing filming of each episode, not just those that are broadcast as Fox was finicky on dropping shows in the past. Thankfully Lee had also landed that clause in his due to his agent’s diligence on the fine print, not on contract speaking levels with Tracy you just hoped she’d taken care of that detail as well as her parents were in producing so she had that foot ahead in the business.
Right away melting into the scripts offered your focused furrow was smirked at and focus approved by all as sign for those you didn’t know that you would do your best to help this show do well. October bled into November, which had you on the bus out to meet up with the wardrobe crew to give the various outfits a try granting them time to tailor then to fit you better.

December had crept up on you and before you knew it from your bed you sighed to the sound of the intercom buzzing trying to tear you from your relaxation with lifted foot bouncing in the air plopping down for you to get up at the next buzz. “I hear you,” you muttered and crossed the apartment to your intercom you hit the button to say, “Hello?”
“Hey Jaqi, thought you might want to get our nails done before the premier.”
Wide eyed you asked, “Jen?”
“Yes,” she giggled into the intercom.
“Um, let me just change,”
Though when you turned your head you heard her say, “Ok, oh.” The door opened beside her and you heard Lee say, “Sorry, um,” the sound cut off and Lee hit the button saying, “She’s on her way up Jaq.” With a point of his hand she nodded and smiled thanking the stunned Lee on his way to lunch with his brother glancing back on her path to the stairs wondering why the star was here as you hadn’t mentioned anything to him the night before.
Shaking your head you hurried to the closet to find and bounce into a pair of jeans covering your panties with just a baggy tank top on you grabbed a bra to slide through the wide open sleeves. The hooks were secured at the knock on your door and you trotted on your toes across the chilly floor wiggling your arms into the straps in time to unlock and open the door grinning for the smiling actress. “Hey, sorry,”
She shook her head walking past you in your step back to let her in, “No problem, thought I might catch you off guard. Nice building.”
“Thank you,” you replied without a giggle guiding her towards the bedroom where the sound of the Green Gables film series was still playing. “You’re not thirsty are you? I think I have some sprite left if Lee didn’t drink it all yesterday.”
“Lee?”
She asked and you glanced back at her from the closet putting on your socks, “The guy who let you in, we went to school together, best friend, lives downstairs.”
“Ah, so that’s how he knew to send me up.”
You giggled and asked, “You know many other people in this building?”
Giggling back she said, “No,” her eyes focusing on your curls asking, “You cut your hair?!”
“Oh, ya, I got a part on a show with Lee, up in Canada, but they want my hair straight, so it’s about past boob level where they want it. Waiting on dying it till January for the filming after the premiers are through.”
“Well I think it’s cute,”
You giggled saying as you grabbed a warm grey sweater sent to you from Richard in his hatred of not being able to see you just yet, “It’s still angry with me. Cute or not.”
A belt was added and she said, “Hair can be so petty sometimes.” In a glance around the room she asked, “Is your heater broken?”
“In a matter of speaking,” you said exiting the closet to turn off the film once your heeled boots were added knowing it was too cold outside for converse, “Someone stole our new furnace off the delivery truck, so the company is sending a new one. Heat is down till tomorrow night, possibly.”
That had her chuckle, “I don’t mean to laugh,”
“Oh no, you can laugh. Every time the landlord buys something from the designated company it ends up stolen. I think they just don’t want to admit they can’t meet the original shipping date. Don’t have many overthrowing delivery trucks no matter how shabby the place may look.”
“This is not shabby. My first apartment had bullet holes to let in the cold.”
“Firehouse on the corner and police on the other with an army recruitment place three doors over, nope, dad was sure this place was bullet free zone. Not to mention he’s friends with the landlord. So he technically has an ear to the ground out here.”
“How is your dad?”
“Good, helping with my new cousins. One of them had to have a surgery,”
“Nothing serious I hope.”
“Oh no, they had this weird little cluster of cysts on their lower back. Thought it might be a tail at first but turns out the twins who used to be triplets had little bits of their brother they ate on their backs,”
She giggled and covered her mouth, “Sorry,”
“Don’t be, the little cannibals were caught red handed. Nothing harmful, gave full scans that was the only hidden pockets the triplet was in. Given the all clear, just their mom is still a bit weirded out about it.”
“Understandably.” With a grin she waited for you to finish grabbing what you needed and walked out with you excited to take you to the high end salon she had booked the private back room to for the pair of you. A gesture in a good day to hang out before her final leg of press the week before the premier when it would be all in front of cameras and divided between required splits from the group for questions, photographs or otherwise.
“So I watched The Ring,” That had you giggling at her finger poking your arm, “Girl you did not blink once!”
“They told me not to, said it would be creepier. And it creeped the nice lady I worked with in my asylum scenes and Naomi especially when she came to talk to me.”
“It is so good though, creepy but good. I did not know you could go that far on that end of the broken scale.”
“Oh yes, got the creepy side out and this next film should show off my lovely depressed side too.”
“I can’t wait, got my invite to the premier, thank you.”
“You are very welcome, you and the guys from the Lord of the Rings all split up the rest of my tickets for the France, London and New York premiers.”
“So what’s this new show about, can you say?”
“Well,” you giggled to yourself drawing her eyes to you in a quick glance. “I work in a gift shop at Niagara  Falls, deliberate underachiever since getting my degree, and I start hearing animal figurines talking to me, try to get me to help people around me.”
“That-,”
“It’s so weird but it’s got one of the wittiest most sarcastic bits in a tv script I’ve been given.”
“Oh well if it’s a comedy then that’s good. Who’s putting it out?”
“Fox is behind it.”
“Ooh, nice hear they pay well.”
“Just about passed out hearing how much my lawyer got me.” She looked at you as you said, “65k an episode. I mean it’s not the most, my supposed love interest is getting near double that since he’s been in a few successful films and is better known in Canada. But still, that’s so much money.”
“They must have good hopes for it.”
“Hopefully, if not they worked in a clause I get paid per episode whether or not they get aired or not.”
“Very nice.”
“Yes,” you giggled, “Lawyer is also my grandparents’ and he no doubt is firmly reminded not to let me get dropped into the bin contract wise.”
“Good thing too, we should all have our grandparents choose our lawyers and watch over them. Do us all some good.”
“Didn’t help when they looked into Fox and saw they tend to drop projects all the time by the second season.”
“Ya, tv shows can be like crap shoots sometimes. Why I switched to films and my own music as quick as I could.”
“I do like films better. Even if they flop they feel safer. And you don’t have to worry about too many rewrites.”
“Any new projects?”
“So far there’s a small bit I have in a reshoot out in England, just a few lines for comedy and so far that’s it. Richard’s agent said there’s a few jobs possibly circulating to ask about me when they get their boat together to send out official asks. One would be with Richard, so that would be fun.”
She chuckled and asked, “So where is this mystery man hiding at?”
That had you giggling again. “He’s got a job, they’ve been catching up out in Europe for a few shots before they switch to Canada. Last I heard he had two flights and a train to catch. So just me and my adventures out and about through town to keep me busy. According to everyone I’ve worked with who meets him I mope.” You opened the front door for her and she led the way down the stoop to the waiting suv she opened and hopped into.
Up behind her you climbed in and closed the door ignoring the few flashes from the shivering cameramen who clambered back to their cars to follow you both. “Managed to slip most of the others a couple miles back, not bad just the five of them.”
“Oh no problem. Had some cameras at the airport on the way back from the premier. Apparently a woman thought I was Milla Jovovich.”
She giggles, “Did you have to sign anything?”
“She shoved a magazine at me.”
“Did you do the squiggle?”
“Yes, I couldn’t tell how the name was spelled so first letter squiggle was my go to. That ever happen to you?”
“Oh yes, when I was starting out. Some people didn’t even know my name they just recognized my face not knowing from where and then tried to read my signature to thank me. You get some crazy names when they do that.”
“I bet.” After a moment you asked, “So I guess you’ll be at the Daredevil premier then?”
Her smile split wider, “I don’t know, depends where I am. It’s out when?”
“’04, I think. Ways off.”
“We will see, either way I will be watching it and keeping my eyes peeled for you.”
“Ooh, hope you buy the tape you might need that freeze button.”
“Can’t be that bad,”
“They cut it into two films, then scattered me in random extra bits in Daredevil cuz I got pushed to the Elektra film and even that isn’t guaranteed by the time they finish filming the rest of it around, Jennifer Garner and the other main six. I know I’ll be a Stewardess at least, and I’m drinking in a cafe, twice.”
“Well there you go, can’t just leave it to Ben and the other boys for the whole film, need some gorgeous ladies in the mix.”
“Sorry,” You huffed brushing your hair from your face, “They decided to split it right when I got hurt on that wiring stunt and ended up in a boot. Just bit petty.”
“I nearly broke my foot in Gigli, really don’t look forward to seeing that scene. I get it, others just get to watch the film but we can pinpoint ‘oh that was the day my foot got fucked up’ or ‘I had such bad cramps that day’ or ‘what the hell did they put in my food I’m supposed to be eating in that scene’. I swear sometimes they hide stuff in my food to throw me off. Had a salad once that tasted like cinnamon. Just drove me crazy when they said they didn’t.”
“They put hot sauce in my soup on one of the Lord of the Rings scenes. Was inching close to a cold coming up on a week I’d have to run nonstop and some of the Maori guys said to eat a bunch of peppers and hot sauce and just, oh I was about in tears. And the stomach pains after, I can eat it but their sauce just comes back with a vengeance.” Making her giggle, “I’ve had Indian food more forgiving than that.”
“Yes, certain peppers even have me on my knees. You have to learn your limit early. Did it help at least?”
“With the cold ya, and boy did they brag on it.”
She chuckled and at the fancy salon you eyed the glass walls no doubt sport for those passing by along with the cameramen and after a quick smile your way she led the way out and waited for you to hop down and close the door to follow her inside. A shift of your coat over your side unbunching it from under your arm and up your hand went to brush your curls back that only fell back into your face again thanks to the chilly breeze the cameras would absolutely hate waiting through. Inside the door already the waiting hostess stood blocking the path farther saying in an eerily calm yet nasally voice, “Your private room is ready.” On her heel she turned and Jen smirked to you at her double finger wag over her six and a half foot high apparent shoulder towering over you and similarly curvy and petite Jen to her waif like self. “This way please.”
Holding back the urge to mouth her words and mock her off kilter sway you simply lowered your hands tapping your fingertips under the base of your sweater to your shifting thighs on each step taking in the shop along the way with plenty of eyes fixed on you both. “There you are little Madame!” An exuberant voice sounded and all six foot five of the lanky beautician in staggering five inch heeled boots similar to yours but in bright yellow stood and strut his way over to your side making you giggle at his hand extending that yours laid inside to be patted by his free hand, “I am, awestruck. I watched your show on Broadway, and you earned every ounce of that Tony you tiny ferocious thing you.”
That had you giggle again. “Thank you.”
“Then what do I see you go and do? Repping Miss Queen Dolly’s shoes on that carpet and stage, you are striking, you put her on, the, map.” The final three words accentuated with brief pauses for sassy head swaggers before he turned popping his hip in a centering pose almost before guiding you to the pedicure station on the end that was clearly his for his long legs.
“Queen Dolly’s shoes?” Jen asked pausing at her station beside yours unzipping her raised boot to be put in her rolling cart to house them and her socks.
Turning your head you said, “My grandparents sent me a car to take me shopping for the Tonys and I got turned out of Loubiton and so I went to a friend’s shoe shop, Queen Dolly.”
Your beautician raised his foot pointing to his shoe, “Nearly had to cut a bitch for these.” Spreading Jen’s smile as you giggled removing your first boot and sock you tucked inside it to remove the second still up on your toes. “Queen Dolly and her friends look after me. Helped me my first year when I fell down some subway steps in winter and since, so I couldn’t think of anyone else’s shoes I wanted to wear knowing I’d have to go alone.”
He lifted a finger, “You little Madame made our lives with just flashing those heels on those steps to the stage, and you should have heard the screams through the clubs and our block when the article came out and you named her shop! Now it is the top of the top over those two bit amateur Borodin Brothers shop on 32nd, you know I bought some boots there once and the zipper tore clean off?! Then those assholes made me buy the damn boots like it was my fault they fashioned them together with paperclips.” Up he helped you into the chair and began to roll up your pant legs saying, “You have lovely feet for a dancer. I have trained in ballet, and it is not easy to get your feet like this, you must live in salons.”
“No, I just learned how to do it myself. Salt soaks and pumice scrubs and lotion soaks under socks. Heater is spotty at best and I hate calluses. Bruises are hard enough. Sort of my spoil me time. And my Mate gives the best foot rubs I’d hate to scare him off.”
That had him laugh, “No you do not.”
Jen smirked saying as she settled into the chair beside yours, “I think we should go shoe shopping after this.”
Her beautician smirked saying with a point of his own, “Straight to Loubiton, go wave your cash in their smug faces.” Then he asked, “What color are you wearing to the premier Miss Jen?”
She answered, “It’s this lovely sort of plum color with a metallic sort of finish to it.”
“Ooh, nice,” he replied and looked through his selection of nail polish for a few options for her.
Yours asked, “And what ensemble will you be killing it in?”
“Well it’s black, but with a gold lace accent on the top over a ribbon belt.”
“Ooh,” the men said together.
“So I was thinking maybe a light gold or a pale yellow?”
He nodded and smiled at you, “I think I know just the color.” On his own while you soaked your feet once back with the color of his choosing he asked, “Please tell me you don’t perm that fabulous hair.”
“Oh no, all my curls here.”
“I am so glad of that,” he said brushing his own long curly ponytail back over his back reaching to his belt. “We need some more curls flaunted on the red carpets. And I did love me the good screams watching the Ring, but I was beside myself hoping those were real curls and not forced then run ragged on you in that film.”
“They thought teasing them a bit would make me look more disturbed.”
Jen’s guy scoffed, “The staring did that plenty for me.” Making you grin to yourself in your gut settling down again at your feet.
Their conversation drifted off while Jen shared the rest of her travel plans for the week including press she was scheduled to bounce all across the country to drop in on top tv shows making her ask, “Are you booked for shows for your film?”
“Through Europe mainly. Three in England, a morning and two evening shows, sort of a Letterman vibe.”
“None over here?”
“I did get an email from Good Morning America, they said they would let me know if one of their zoo shows had to cancel. Something about a film they were asked to lend a monkey to.” At her frozen expression you giggled, “I’m bigger in England it seems. Sir Ian McKellen drops your name you get noticed. Not to mention the rumor mill I apparently stirred up over this film. Apparently I heard from Richard’s brother there is now an elephant and a team of hippos in it that are trained for some musical number. If there is it’s news to me.”
She chuckled and said, “Well maybe this premier will change things for you. Make them take notice. We are friends after all I will not hesitate to name drop if I have to.” You giggled again, “Gotta stick together.” Looking you over she asked, “So I’m still not going to be able to meet Richard?” That had you giggle again and cover your face a moment as she said, “Because me and Natasha are just dying to. He looks so nice in those pictures from your other premiers you took him to. Surely he can’t be worth hiding-,”
Lowering your hands still giggling you said, “I will see what I can do. He’s been up to something the only times he’s radio silent is when he’s planning something. Last time was this sweater he mailed me and the time before that he dropped in on me in Texas sharing he was hired as my costar for the new film. So it varies in size.”
“Least it never grows old that way.”
“No it does not,” You giggled out. “Even when we’re at the same place he’s always coming up with dinners or little adventures. Even his dad took us on a tour of the nuclear plants out there one summer.” You caught her eye saying, “His dad used to work at one and it was their summer vacation destination, tours of all of them. Helped to keep him humble.”
“Wow, so his dad worked on nuclear plants and yours worked on oil rigs.”
“Yes, just call us the energy wonder kids couple. His brother does on occasion.”
“How do you surprise him then?” She asked with a smirk making you roll your eyes.
“After the winter break we first met in when I was back to New York I left him one of those day to day calendars with notes and pictures through it. And some sheets since he hadn’t made his bed past tossing old clothes on it.”
“Aww, so sweet.”
“He’s a moper too.”
“Which flower is it you’re allergic to again?” Your guy asked with a pair of bottles in his hands.
“Lavender.” You replied with Jen looking at you while he smiled and bent to grab a yellow bottle on the bottom of his cart.
“Then you miss Madame are going to smell like honey. No one asks for this one and I can not tell you how many people want to smell like different types of flowers. Just about makes your eyes cross by closing time.”
Jen’s smiles saying, “Just got some peach you asked for, love the smell.” He said smirking after stealing another sniff of the scrub for feet and legs.
She smiled saying, “Thank you.” And looked at you asking, “Is that like a severe allergy?”
“Um, I can be around it, for a short time but I know in the other horror film I’m in they washed the nurse costume with lavender and I had to soak with salts to keep from breaking out and to soothe the few rashes I got. Usually I only go to spas when my grandparents plan it and they always call ahead on the restriction.”
“That’s good, I got a cousin whose kid swells up from lima beans, odd allergy. Just actually got a call from her they’re planning to head to the Alamo in the spring, he is obsessed with it.” After a moment she asked, “Have you been?”
“Oh ya, raised in Texas. Sort of required by some. School had a field trip there and to the River Walk. Pretty fun, expensive but fun. Our bus almost got towed actually. The bill for the parking lot got stuck in the slot on the unmanned pay station and it tore in half and by the time the driver came back with a new bill from the bank nearby the tow truck came for its second towing round of the day.” After a moment you asked, “Is it the cowboys he likes? Cuz there are tons of cowboy museums in Texas.”
“He loves cowboys, his dad actually took a work trip to Texas and found a few he’d like.”
“Fun phase, cowboys, then again I grew up in a ranch so I never really grew out of it. Part of why filming in New Zealand was fun, all those horses.”
Jen’s guy asked, “Like a real ranch? Like you rope cattle and all that?”
“Rodeo is a staple back home. We mainly have sheep and horses, one of my uncles runs the bull breeding on the other end of our property. They tend to like it quieter and our donkeys like to agitate them.”
Your guy asked, “You have donkeys too?”
“They’re one of the best guards for sheep. Make tons of noise if they hear anything and they have hooves hard enough to bash the hell out of any coyotes or mountain lions that try to sneak up on the little fluffy guys.”
Jen, “You have mountain lions?”
After a giggle you replied, “Not like pets but they come down sometimes from the peaks to try and scope out our herds. Normally steer clear though after their first scare.”
“So you could just get mauled? Out of nowhere?” She asked.
“We have guns and bows if they do get close, but they don’t generally attack people out of nowhere, more likely to take on the cattle.” Again you giggled at their wide eyed stares, “It’s not as dangerous as it sounds. It just comes with the territory, gonna raise animals you got to be ready to protect them.”
Jen, “You miss the ranch?”
“Sometimes. I can always go home, it is nice not having 4 am chores and jeans without mud caked on them. Do miss the free supply of firewood and fish though. Have our own woods we clear of fallen branches and ponds to fish in. Saves a bundle of you stretch it right.”
Jen, “That sounds nice, little place it in the middle of nowhere. Grow old on some land of your own.”
Her guy said, “Long as I can have some buff guys to keep on hand for some tilling I am all in girl.” Making you giggle with her as the conversation shifted to this ranch film the guys tried to explain rather vaguely to try and figure out the name of the guys lead in it lasting through the leg and foot massage and finish of your pedicure. Foam sandals were given for the walk you were helped down to tenderly step over to the nail station for the second half of your pampering as your feet rested under the lamps above the foot rest.
A bit more the guys asked about favorite films and actors they couldn’t name blending through to the final addition of three fake clear gems on your pinky fingers in a flower design with a tiny black leaf painted on before the final wait to dry under the lamps. Carefully socks and boots were added again with hugs traded as Jen insisted to cover the nail outing then eased her arm through yours saying, “Let’s go find you some shoes.”
Red bottomed with straps ankle to the ball of your foot in a strikingly tall heel the black pair sat on the shelf just above your reach and while Jen had two aids helping her to inspect her own choices the same man from before the Tony’s came over with a creeping grin. “Might I be of assistance?”
“Do you have those in a six?”
His eyes followed your finger seeing the shoes from the year prior soon to be taken down to be replaced by a newer style after not selling too well and he said, “Let me check.” Hurrying off exhaling softly in a calming way in his guess you didn’t remember his turning you away before. For a deal you accepted the pair and brought out the cash for them ticking up his brow a moment seeing you were buying your own shoes while Jen was getting most of hers for free in hopes she would wear them out somewhere in front of cameras. She could have just added your pair to hers but he had to appreciate that even in the big haul of shoes sent out to the way of cameras instead of possible future sales there was still cash in hand. With hold of the bag he eased your pair into you sat back by Jen helping her to wade through her twelve choices for the five she settled on for the upcoming press stops and premiers she had outfits already for each.

Sucker Punch is a film about the harsh reality for women back in the days where lobotomy was the answer to all trauma. Also a harsh reminder to the abuse women go through. Is it a feminist film though??? Like this might be random but its a discussion i want to have and idk with who.
So: i was talking about ratched with a friend, while i’m not a fan of shows like AHS (im always impress by the acting and directing but horror is just not my vibe, lets ignore that im part of the IT fandom bc that’s an outlier lmao). And, as a person who was once interested in forensics psychology and criminology (im a bfa for theatre so clearly not the path I ultimately chose shdhdh), i started looking at all documentaries for lobotomy.
Then I remembered. In 7th grade, while the movie was new, i did watch sucker punch with my family. And idk why that film has always been in the back of my mind. For years. Its a film that just always felt so raw and I couldn’t describe why. Rewatching it now as an adult i realize all the really deep themes the movie had. Its sad back then people deemed it as a dumb action movie. Lowkey I think we can go on the route of sexism for that. Bc really the movie was about women with a deep traumatic life fighting together and relying on each other to survive.
I saw a vid saying sweet pea might have not even be a character? It could have been baby doll’s persona who got away in her mind to be freed inside herself while she undergoes lobotomy. Or maybe baby doll was sweet pea’s persona on the same reasoning. It makes sense to me sweet pea is the fictional one as baby doll is the one with the background info at first. Thus sweet pea’s sister was her imagination of sort of overcoming the trauma of her own sister’s death and ultimately coping with her death, knowing in a way it happened for her to be freed of the abuse. Almost justifying herself for accidentally killing her sister, knowing it happened bc she was fighting for freedom. If baby doll were sweet pea’s alternate ego that makes less sense to me as we don’t know her background as well. We didn’t see it as explicit. And even after the lobotomy it seemed more on the real world for baby doll rather than sweet pea’s encounter with 2 people they had seen in the fictional world (bus driver and kid) going a way on a bus to “paradise” (which was how the lobotomy was referred to at first).
Is all very deep, but is it a feminist take? Is this movie a way to show the harsh reality and sexual abuse women go/went through and ultimately how mental illness was used as a weapon against them and their trauma, and how lobotomy was also inhumane??? A tale from the perspective of girls supporting each other snd trying to survive amongst trauma??? Or was it all just trauma porn????? Pls anyone answer i really want to have a discussion on this.
I think the conversation on how valid these points are portrayed due to who made it (a cis man making a movie on gender violance to women) is a different conversation than the plot itself though. I def dislike how some things went about, but ultimately i’m not talking about the movie as a whole, but about the story. (If we talk movie I understand more time was spent on the sexy scenes than the psychological contrast and real moments, but again I don’t wanna talk about the film as a whole, just the story itself). However, i’m tagging the director bc apparently more people will see it that way💀

1of2 Tired of metas blaming executives / defending writers. Writers can write horrible endings. Proof - GOT, HIMYM, Lost etc. Executives didn't force those bad endings. Reading all these conspiracy theories feels like I am listening to Trump. Executives are homophobic but ok with incestous ending? I asked my SO (who never watched SPN) to watch SPN final with me. I quote him "didn't you say they are brothers. It almost looks like they are going to kiss - Ewww - is this what you want me to watch?"
2of2 Even if we look at bottom line - Executives - apparently don't care the fact that Destiel was trending FIRST world wide - in middle of pandemic, middle of historic US elections - such free publicity to gain more viewers and money - but they care about incestous endings which grossed out lot of people. I wish these metas and conspiracy theorists stop baiting people and stop defending writers. Even before covid - Dabb had intended for this bad ending with proof that only 30% will like it.
Oh, nonnie. If you have sent this just 2 days ago, I’d be there with you, all salty about metas defending writers. Today tho, after going through some serious posts about the CW involvement with the show, about Russian market, about professional dubbing practices I have my thoughts in different order.
So, from what I’ve seen so far (barely past midnight November 26 in the US as of writing this). Jensen went to re record audio stuff for 15x18, most likely Cas confession scene. Now we have info from Latin America (2 separate dubs)  that Dean actually reciprocated Cas’s love declaration and only after that The Empty took Cas. Nonnie, this changes everything. The first thing so many viewers noticed and commented on was the weird way the scene was cut and how little emotions Dean showed. The running gag on twitter was that Jensen is homophobic and Misha strong-armed him into that scene. Non shipper said that it was platonic love declaration from Cas, coming out of nowhere. But most importantly, we, shippers were robbed from proper celebration of our ship going canon. After 12 years of sticking with the ship, they still took it from us. This is totally on the CW shoulders.
But also, this means that destiel was at some point greenlit by the executives to be reciprocated in canon. Until someone at the CW backpaddled in late September. The writers are not responsible for this, they are victims of these changes as well. Dean’s answer changes the emotional beats of several scenes in 15x19 in addition to the scenes that were cut. 15x19 has that strange montage at the very end which most likely was added to cover cut scenes, say like Lucifer, Jack and Cas scene in the empty? Because if Misha was in 15x19, that would mean that the prank call was never meant to be his last contribution. I mean, the disrespect to the fans, the writers and Misha, all in one episode.
And then there’s 15x20 which looks so weird that a lot of fans immediately said that it is a butchered episode. Thing is, we have no idea what kind of script was written pre covid, how much it was changed and when, and how much was cut out from filmed episode. I’ve seen posts sayin that the script for 15x20 was still in rewrites when they finished filming for 15x18. Which is very, very late for a shooting script. I personally think that Dean’s death was the thing Jensen disliked so much, but even then - we don’t know how it was framed in earlier scripts and how they arrived at that horrific scene in 15x20.
I’m not saying that SPN writers are the most amazing TV writers out there, and I look forward times when we will be able to discuss all problematic stuff SPN is filled to the brim with, but. We just don’t know what exactly happened in the SPN writing room and how much executives meddled with it. COVID happened. Nothing of this is normal. This is why the most important thing right now is to pressure the CW for some answers. Look at them throwing Misha under the bus today. That tells you bunches how well they know fandom and how to manipulate us.
Now about that incestuous scene, aka Dean’s death, and why homophobic executives would be OK with it but not canon destiel. Under the cut we go, mostly for space reasons.
Ok, this is so funny but I actually just finished writing my second answer about wincest in 15x20 and had problems posting it and that’s how I learned that we broke tumblr and destiel went canon in spanish. Here’s my post, check it out bc I’m not repeating it  here.
I think wincest, aka incest between two able bodied, adult male brothers is something casual viewer outside the fandom is not even thinking about. If it was sister/brother deal with intimate embrace, people would notice faster. But two masculine, 6 ft tall macho dudes during the death scene? Nope. Here comes plausible deniability which viewers also use to ignore anything “funny” between Dean and Cas. I’m glad that you and your partner noticed incest vibes, but, I’ve see plenty people even in destiel fandom being fine with such scenes between Sam and Dean. I’ve seen some destiel fans saying that they really loved 15x20, so, there are viewers out there for whom it worked.
Now let’s look at the bottom line. TBH, I’ve no idea where to look? Where is the projected revenues for a show that is ending? You say that Destiel trending during pandemic is a proof that our fandom is huge, but. No one knew that we had such power! And trending on twitter is not something that translates into money easily. And it happened 2 weeks before finale. There’s no time to change finale anymore. I personally think that destiel fandom has been shrinking for past couple of years, since so many folks left due to bad writing and queerbaiting. But they came back for tweeting. At this point destiel is bigger than it’s fandom. I personally think that the CW would have benefited from canon destiel, but they made different call.
I agree with you that in general, fandom should not defend the writers so much and ought to be more critical about the stuff they write, but today, November 26, 2020, the game is happening on completely different plane. I’m pretty sure that we got a butchered finale, and I’m very much inclined to believe that it is somehow connected to their efforts to promote The Walker show. Maybe Dabb’s original finale was really bad, but show me the script then. If destiel was supposed to be reciprocated, then they might have gone overboard with bro love in Dean’s death scene. Only now, when destiel was one-sided, that scene becomes very wincesty seemingly on purpose. A good creative writing, in it’s finished form, is a very tightly woven fabric. You pull out some threads, you unravel whole fabric. And that’s what 15x20 is.
2 days ago I’d be roasting metas who defend spn writers, today I want to storm the CW. (pitchforks anyone?) Destiel shippers were robbed, queer love story was censored, this should be the focus of or anger today, not the writers or actors. We can do both - demand truth about the Cas confession scene and roast original Dabb’s ending if we ever get it.
ETA - after writing this up, I checked out some posts by blogs who debunk all conspiracies, including Spanish dub. They sound very convincing! But in that case we have to talk about long term queerbaiting that was taking place on this old CW show till the very last minute. Cas was used in promos for 15x17 he was not in. They (ppl who make promos) deliberately used Cas barn scene from 4x01 in those promos, then actual barn in 15x20 promo but somehow it is shippers who are delusional? Don’t start me on Song of the day. Angel with a shotgun for 15x19? What was that about? After 15x18 there was no official goodbye to Cas which made ppl to watch finale. Like? Even if the Spanish dub gets officially debunked by the CW and not some random blogs, we are left with the fact that destiel fandom was gaslighted during the last stretch of s15. And not only by writers.
And if this was the finale they so lovingly crafted and deemed to be good, where are the celebration of the SPN ending? Why we had to watch documentary before the episode? Why 15x20 was so short? Why Canada watched the episode first (and leaked spoilers online) They filmed after quarantine, the script had to be the usual length. And so on, fandom has been through all the things that didn’t match several times already. PITCHFORKS -> the CW

2020 IFFBoston Fall Focus - Part 3
Thurs. was the kick off of the virtual IFFBoston Fall Focus, the mini-festival part of Independent Film Festival in the Fall. Monday it wrapped. Check out my preview I posted last week and check out part 1 of my coverage here and part 2 here. Here now is my continued coverage of this year’s Fall Focus:
Sun. Nov 1:
Olivia Cooke is now the festival darling of IFFBoston. Back in 2015, I took note of her breakout role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which was the Closing Night Film at the 2015 IFFBoston. Since then she’s popped up in several movies including Ready Player One. At this year’s IFFBoston Fall Focus, Cooke already appeared in Sound of Metal (read my review here) and now she also stars in Little Fish. IFC Films is releasing it in February 2021.
Tumblr media
one of my favorite shots in Little Fish
Little Fish is a sci-fi movie that doesn’t feel like sci-fi. It focuses on a newlywed couple who are struggling in a world where a pandemic of memory-loss is occurring and they are trying to hold on as best they can. Its kinda surreal to watch a movie about a fictional pandemic as an actual one is happening in the world right now. In this film, average people suddenly forget something, i.e. a bus driver suddenly forgets how to drive a bus, pulls over and starts walking away. For Emma (played by Cooke) and Jude (Jack O’Connell), he is starting to slip in his memory. They begin looking for solutions, cures, anything.
This felt like a mashup of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Memento, but set in a pandemic world. There were moments of just breathtaking beauty in some of the shots. Cooke is definitely the standout of this film here. She carries this movie. However, I had issues with the story. It felt like there wasn’t a lot explained about this virus. I don’t need everything explained to me in a movie, but in this one it would’ve been nice to learn just a little more. It was similar to the issues I had with Fernando Meirelles film Blindness, where people are suddenly losing their vision and it never got addressed why or how to cure. One could look at Little Fish as a metaphor for dementia or Alzheimer’s, in which a spouse suddenly doesn’t recognize or know their partner and how devastating that can be. There were some powerful scenes in this, I just wished the whole was bigger than the sum of its parts.
Festival Wrap-up: I was totally bummed to not have IFFBoston this past Spring, so just having the virtual Fall Focus was exciting for me to have some part of my favorite film festival this year. Of the films I caught, Zappa was my personal favorite. Thank you IFFBoston for giving us this virtual mini-fest!

Unpopular opinion:
Jurassic Park: The Lost World was actually a pretty good movie and the third Jurassic Park film was decent and not as bad as you remember it (although I admit, they could’ve changed a few things around).
The second film was really good, the only thing I would’ve changed was the gymnastic scene against the raptors and maybe keep the Trex chase scene on the mainland centred around the docks, rather than make a goofy bus chase in the middle of the city. Like, maybe extend the part with the raptors in the long grass and make the protagonists creep around the grass as they are being stalked in a really quiet, creepy fashion (homage to the kitchen scene in the original), and when the Rex is on the mainland maybe keep her hunting through the docks for her baby and have the baby rex kept in a shipping container which the protagonist are trying to find before she goes inland etc.
The third film had some really good ideas, I love the new alpha dinosaur; the spinosaurus (I know it’s inaccurate and would have eaten fish) especially the scene when it’s stalking the family on the boat through the water and it’s surrounded by fire, and I liked the ‘bird cage’ with the pteranodons, I loved the raptors hunting the family because of the eggs and I liked how it felt a little bit more violent than the others (spray of blood when the plane hits the Spino’s fan, the raptor breaking the mans neck etc.) I would have got rid of the dumb dream scene on the plane, kept the morale of the story focused on nature’s power than a family’s love for each other, definitely made sure the man killed by the pteranodons stayed dead, like, just have the balls to do that film no really cared about that dude that much, and something I would have added was at the end, doesn’t have to be a spectacular fight, a tyrannosaurus kills the spinosaur. Basically, have the tyrannosaurus killed at the start be a juvenile or a very young adult (if you want a tragic twist, have it be the baby from the second film) and at the end, have the spinosaurus be killed by the parent. As much as I loved the spino, many fans were angry that the iconic Rex was killed, so this way we give a lot of screen time to a new villain but at the same time, pay homage to the Tyrannosaurus.
Something I also wished had happened, is that the fourth or fifth film would reference that the reason the Spinosaurus was so dangerous and large and intelligent was because it was INGEN’S first attempt at a hybrid (which is actually possibly canon). I think this little bit of info would make it sooo much cooler and is definitely an improvement to the lore. But as those two films make no reference to Isla Sorna at all (time restrictions maybe?) I’m not really holding out hope for the third film to clear things up.

skam france ‘behind the scenes’ masterpost
While we all are waiting for bloopers to drop and hopefully news on new seasons let’s remember bts info that we got till now about filming seasons 3 and 4 (but mostly 3). Feel free to add more!
On the very first day, 3 of October, they shot clip ‘Samedi 14h34 - Pas si hétéro que ça’ from ep 2 [sources x & x]
At projection on 19th of April David said they shot clip ‘Samedi 14h32 – Intervention’ from ep 7 on the second day [source x]
3d day of shooting turned out a busy week for everyone, because we got the legendary Samedi 9h17 from ep 5, then ‘VODKAAAAA’ sequence following 3 clips from ep 9: 'Dimanche 16h34 - Je gère pas là', 'Dimanche 19h25 - La vérité' and 'Dimanche 20h41 - Un peu de vodka' AND also minute by minute scene, which is ‘Lundi 17h21 - On verra bien non?’ from ep 10. p.s. ‘minute by minute’ scene was shot right before ‘samedi 9h17′ [sources x & x & x & x]
6th day was pretty intense, because they shot Elu's 1st kiss (clip 'Vendredi 20h27 - Le premier’ of ep 4, then Elu's 2d reunion in ep 9 which is clip 'Vendredi 20h27 - T'es plus tout seul', and also Lucas' desperate run towards Eliott, when he almost got hit by a car [sources x & x]
The boat sequence aka clip that hurts like hell was shot on the 8th day (‘Vendredi 19h25 - Tu me fais confiance non ?’ and ‘Vendredi 23h37 - Une putain de lubie’ from ep 8). [source x]
The magnificent painting scene, which are clips ‘Vendredi 18h14 - Faudrait savoir mec’ and ‘Vendredi 18h35 - Ça compte pas’ from ep 7, was shot on the 16th day [sources x & x]
18th day of shooting. Clip ‘Jeudi 12h48 - Il te plait’ from season 4 ep 2 [source x]
20th day of shooting. Clip ‘Mercredi 11h54 - Une meuf bien’ from season 4 ep 8 [source x]
23 day (night) of shooting was Kiffance (but I’m not entirely sure), which are clips ‘Vendredi 21h - Kiffance’ and ‘Vendredi 21h36 - Pas forcément une meuf’ [source x]
24 day (night) of shooting and it was party at Chloé’s from clip ‘Vendredi 19h21 - Y'a pas de problème’ of ep 5 (the one where we all cry and Axel injures his hand) [source x]
32 day of shooting, and it was clip 'Lundi 18h49 – Gênant' from season 4 ep 4 [source x]
Clips without particular date of filming. It’s known that they shot everything by location, and so David confirmed that clips from s3 ‘Vendredi 18h53 - On aime bien chelou’, ‘Vendredi 16h07 - Avec des petites meufs au calme’, ‘Jeudi 17h32 - C'est pas des adieux’ and clip ‘Vendredi 22h47 - La meilleure personne que je connaisse’ from s4 were shot on 1 day [source x]
Also here are some interesting facts (well known and random):
David was the one who came up with the idea for the s3 trailer – the one with Eliott seeing Lucas on his 1st day in school [source x]
Axel was the one who suggested for Lucas to play piano before it was even written in the script, tho Niels also eventually came up with this idea. Quoting Niels ‘this cheeky bastard’ xD [source x] Axel made a playlist of songs, sent it to David and he chose the most complicated one. It took 2 months for Axel to learn it [source x]
Niels is the one who came up with a raccoon as Eliott’s spirit animal [source x]
The whole cast did a month preparation before filming seasons 3 & 4
Shooting of seasons 3 & 4 started on 3 of October 2018 and finished on 23 of November 2018 [sources x & x]
Maxence and Axel found out about the location of Elu’s first kiss 10 minutes before actual shooting [source x]
According to Niels Axel changed a bit Lucas’ line from ‘it’s good to hear you laugh’ to ‘you’re handsome when you laugh’ in the clip ‘Lundi 17h21 - On verra bien non?’ from ep 10
At projection on 22 of February David said they have bloopers at least 3 hours long [source x]
Before approaching to Eliott’s character Maxence wrote a letter to him, moreover draw a picture of him, adding notes about his personality [source x]
Lucas running to Eliott took 2 takes just because Axel ran too fast, so the minivan with camera had to catch him up all the time. Also a guy from the staff was supposed to inform him about the car, but he forgot, so Axel’s reaction is real [sources x & x]
Cast didn’t get to see clips before actual release. They discovered everything just as we did [source x]
SKAM FRANCE is Maxence’s first acting job
The painting scene was shot in 1 take, and it is 14 minutes long [source x] more interesting info about filming -> [x]
David was the one who took Maxence’s and Axel’s pants off because it was too slippery to do it for themselves [source x]
Maxence broke his foot just 2 days before first meeting and auditioning with Axel [sources x & x & x]
The artist behind Eliott’s drawings is Jeanne Lelièvre. Her Instagram [x]
Cast mostly wore their own clothing. Eliott’s famous brown jacket actually belongs to Maxence, and the ‘romance’ hoodie belongs to Axel [sources x & x]
Maxence hadn’t seen og SKAM and didn’t want to, because he wanted to create his own ‘Even’ [source x]
Polaris takes place in La Petite Ceinture, the church from ep 9 is Notre Dame du Rosaire in Saint Ouen, the Japanese restaurant in the corner of Eliott’s place is at 270 rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine. More about s3 famous places can be found here [x]
David said that the hardest scene to direct was Lucas opening up to Mika and Manon in ep 7 clip ‘Samedi 14h32 – Intervention’ [source x]
Tho we didn’t get to know what was the hardest scene to shoot in season 4, but David said it was Laïs first day on set and ‘conditions around Imane and Sofiane were an actual nightmare’ [source x]
The priest from ep 9 is actually Lula’s dad. His name is François Frapier. Moreover, Lula and Niels were extras for this scene [sources x & x & x]
Speaking of cameos, Alban Etienne, who is David’s producer, can be seen in trailer for season 3. Check it for yourself: Alban / trailer
The show got feedback from international fans much earlier than from French audience [source x]
The last shot scene from s3 is the one where le crew along with Lucas are taking the couch from that creepy store in clip ‘Mercredi 13h37 - Tu le kiffes en fait’ from ep 6
Also in that clip Axel had to wear fake eyelashes since he cut his own [source x]
The last sequence to film from s4, which also wrapped up the whole shoot, was ‘Aïd Moubarak’ and it was ruined by Laïs, because he couldn’t stop laughing for 15 minutes, and of course got scolded by David. According to Laïs and Assa it was Moussa’s fault [sources x & x]
Famous bus stop is actually fake [source x]
Paul Scarfoglio, actor who played Basile, improvised his famous line ‘check de gang’ (‘gang high five’) [source x]
Moussa and David had known each other even before SKAM France. Moussa attended casting for one of David’s projects, but didn’t make it [source x]
Filming Elu’s 1st kiss took 40 technicians [source x]
People in charge of social media content are Timothé ? and Victoria ? [source x]
David chose 90% of soundtrack [sources x & x]
Honorable mentions:
- Kevin McHale watches all versions of SKAM in real time, particularly he was a big fan of original and French remake. His favorite characters are Sana and Isak [sources x & his tweets]
- Endless birthday wishes to David. There were SO MANY of them, that at some point he got pissed and just sent these little devils far away xD [x]
