Thinking about how underrated the Foggy Swamp Tribe was in Avatar.

In the show they’re mostly played for laughs. They don’t wear pants, they have thick accents, they don’t seem to know much about the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. But they're a lot wiser than they're given credit for. Not to mention they're big dang heroes.

The Banyan-grove tree

Philosophically, the swamp is fascinating. Their home is centered around a banyan-grove tree, a cross between a mangrove and a banyan—two trees symbolizing life and death.

Mangrove trees are the nurseries of the ocean. Sea life migrates to mangrove forests to lay eggs in the protection of their murky root systems. Bato may look down on the swamp people and make a snide comment about them not wearing pants, but the swamp people are the stewards of ocean life.

Banyan trees are trees of death. The banyan is a parasitic plant that grows by latching onto another host plant, eventually choking the host to death. Banyan figs are also pollinated through death. Wasps crawl into the immature fig, lay their eggs, and die inside it.

So this tree needs death in order to live. And it can’t provide shelter and food for animals without the death of other animals. You can see how this cycle of life and death is reflected in their worldview—which is completely ride or die.

Everything is connected.

The first thing they do once the gaang stops attacking them is call them kin. They bring them home and treat them like family. And I think the swamp people really do see them that way.

They could have comfortably sat out the war. They didn’t. The war might not have affected them personally, but they still felt responsibility to help.

Death is an illusion. 

They’re not even scared on the Day of Black Sun. They don’t seem afraid of death at all. They keep cat-gators as pets! For fun! Katara and Sokka are distraught by the visions of dead loved ones they see in the swamp gas. The swamp people live in the swamp gas all the time. Death is all around and they do. not. care. In fact, they embrace it, treat it like a normal, necessary part of life.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the swamp people after the Day of Black Sun. They surrendered along with the other adults, buying the children time to flee. The swamp people have their own section in the crowd at Zuko’s coronation, so presumably they were released. But released from where? Were they locked in a prison for water benders like the horrific one Hama was imprisoned in? What happened to them in Legend of Korra when Kuvira harvested the banyan-grove’s vines? Where was their kin when they needed help?

Rykard and Rennala are such an underrated dynamic… we don’t get any direct instances of them interacting like we do with Ranni and Rennala, but there’s definitely hints of a relationship there: The description for several of the magma spells reads,

“After discovering the ancient hexes of Gelmir, Rykard, son of Queen Rennala, brought them back into practical use as new forms of sorcery.”

this implies that Rykard’s interest and skill in sorcery is a direct result of his mother’s influence; plus, he’s emulating her by pioneering a new form of sorcery, just like how she pioneered the study of lunar sorcery at Raya Lucaria. then there’s the two abductor virgins patrolling Raya Lucaria, which means Rykard cared enough about his mother’s safety to set aside two of his war machines to defend her and the academy. there’s also a strong case to be made that his mother’s fate informed Rykard’s hatred of the gods and his belief that they “take by force.” they tried to take her kingdom, they took away Caria’s true power (“during the age of the Erdtree, Carian astrology withered on the vine”), then they took away Radagon and left her a shell of her former self. if that happened to my mom I’d be pissed too. he’s literally mommy’s little war criminal

Underrated powers

So many campers could have had cool powers depending on their godly parents!

Like Demeter children can grow plants right? But what if they could also kill them??? When Kore is kidnapped by Hades Demeter did create winter! Some of her children could have that aspect of her and so the power of starvation or in one myth she cursed a man to endless hunger: her children could have the same ability to some extent!

In the books Pollux and Castor can grow vines because of their father, but can they make someone mad ? Especially after a traumatic event (you know what I’m talking about) that would amplify that power?

And so many cabins are in the same boat, especially Hermes that is the god of so many things! Please someone write something with that I would love to read it 😄

The Dishonored Blade - an ATLA x League of Legends AU, in which on the Winter Solstice during the Fire Nation Spirit Festival, Zuko must reckon with the sins of his past. this fic was the first niche au/wholly indulgent fic i've ever written for myself, and i consider it my best writing to date. just,,, the themes and lessons weave themselves in so naturally that i can hardly believe myself when i read it back and... i think people should read it, especially since this is probably one of my best depictions of the platonic zukaang relationship.

i don't know who i am (but i won't stop trying) - my Katara-centric fic series that deals with colonialism, cultural appropriation, and cultural genocide. technically a series of two fics, but it serves to view the canon ATLA series through the lens of cultural genocide, a lens that i seldom see within larger fandom. and as self-deprecating i am, i do think that those themes really shine in this series, and it's clearly touched many people who have felt these things personally. overall a great series that should be read altogether!

dreamless dreams - a platonic zukaang fic in which Zuko grapples with the guilt of contributing to the imperialism of the FIre Nation and Aang shows him how to heal from it. i have not seen many fics that truly delve deep into Zuko's guilt and shame and have him grapple with those feelings - a lot of Zuko-favorable fics tend to absolve him of his guilt and it's like eeeee. so this was my first truly in-canon introspection of Zuko's character, and i think i did it well

these sleepless nights we spend (waiting to come home) - my Hakoda Adopts Aang fic, because yes Aang deserves all the good things. i just loved developing their relationship (which we barely see in the series) and drawing parallels between them. overall, a fic well-done!

leaves let go (to fall from the vine) - an underrated one, but an Iroh & Lu Ten fic in which Iroh meets Lu Ten one last time and learns to let go of his grief. this fic was written as an angst starter sentence prompt from @itsmoonpeaches, and as intimidated as i was, i really did enjoy writing their relationship, the parallels between the past of Iroh's & Lu Ten's and the present and future of Iroh's & Zuko's relationship. also this let me write out a small hc i had about Lu Ten, so... can't complain lol.

ok quick team tour before the E4 because i'm way more attached to these guys than i thought i'd be. and by quick i mean this might be a long post sorry. i will go in order of acquisition of various team members :]

first up lovebug! named by my friend venty and also who i'd consider my starter :] butterfree's movepool isn't super wide and getting the twisted spoon or silver powder would be more trouble than it's worth at the moment, so aside from teaching Psychic with a TM, i left him with his level up moves and a quick claw for some speedy sleep powders. he has compoundeyes which makes sleep powder nearly 100% accurate and has been incredibly useful this entire run, especially with catching pokemon since sleep is so effective. i love him

next up QUIVER MY BELOVED... i saved her evolution for level 53 literally in the middle of victory road, was super satisfying. nidoqueen can only learn crunch as a nidorina, once she evolves she can't learn it anymore, and nidorina learns it at level 53 so i played the long game to get that one cool move. she has blackglasses to boost the power of it. earthquake is from a TM and i used her as my strength user during my playthrough, but it's a pretty useful move so i just kept it instead of going out of my way to remove it. and then after evolving her i used the move reminder after farming some tinymushrooms to get superpower to top off her moveset. very proud of her she's come so far from being a level 6 nidoran lol

say hello to TACO (BELL)... thanks for the shitpost name @ my qpp SDJFKDFS the miracle seed is from the celadon game corner! did you know weepinbell learns razor leaf at mfing level 42? and before that it only has vine whip for grass stab? it's awful. i waited that long to evolve him. i wanted to save some of my tms for the postgame so i decided to hold onto giga drain and solar beam and the like, decided to just keep razor leaf. i didn't wanna repeat niches by giving him sleep powder or something so i grinded even more tinymushrooms and taught him spit up and stockpile from the move reminder for the meme LOL who knows if i'll actually get use out of it. but i love taco he has been fun to use since i almost always have bulbasaur as my grass type

EGG!!!! he's named after my real life jolteon plushie with the same name. bite is exclusive to eevee at level 30 and since all dark moves are special in this game, it is actually useful on jolteon! i went pretty overboard on this guy because i love him. thunderbolt was a tm from the game corner, and uh... well... i found out he has hidden power water, with 70 base power, which while not the literal Best means he can hit ground types for super effective special damage at the maximum power possible for hidden power which is Based. UNFORTUNATELY hidden power can only be obtained through a 5% pickup drop in FRLG, so i caught a team of 6 meowths and spammed pickup until i got one lol. as for his held magnet item, that's exclusively obtained in FRLG by stealing off of wild magneton... a 5% chance. so i caught a level 31 meowth by bond bridge on two island, taught it thief, and used a repel trick with it to get all encounters to be magneton at the power plant... and just kept encountering until finally got the magnet 18 encounters in. pretty epic. nothing on his moveset is jolteon's natural moveset except thunder wave LOL and he has a pretty rare item for before the postgame

next up is creamsicle who is surprisingly one of my favorites despite being a pretty straightforward pokemon with a limited movepool. icy wind, ice beam, and rest, are all levelup moves, while surf is obviously an HM. mystic water is from the celadon game corner. all of the pokemon on my team are pokemon i've never brought to the endgame before, but dewgong is among the pokemon i've never used before in like... any capacity. so it's been really fun to use her! dewgong is underrated and very cute. but i understand why no one uses it, pretty out of the way in lategame seafoam islands

and last but not least here's torch! a pokemon i've DEFINITELY never used before as mt ember is optional before the postgame and i sometimes don't even take up bill's offer to go, much less linger on mt ember running around for a 5% encounter that late in the game post-blaine. BUT i wanted variety and this is certainly a fun choice after using ninetales a million times in my life. moveset is just levelup moveset except brick break which i taught by (thankfully renewable) TM, and the charcoal is from the game corner. he's the only mon caught in an ultra ball bc i could not be bothered oops... but the yellow matches! (btw he has a special attack IV of 0. LOOOL i still love him though)

and that's my weird ass leafgreen team where i boxed my starter and went out of my way to get pokemon i've not used before. i am at around 30 hours of gameplay and i'm going to fight the E4 shortlySDFKFSD

Zerobaseone mythology concept

Well, this our second part. I already did our first part on zb1 members (Hyung line) as Greek gods and goddess in case of a Greek mythology concept which I hope is gonna happen.

Disclaimer ! I am basing this from my memories of my class on greek iconography and not of work adapted from it. And i am not going to talk about everything that is SA, abuse and violence the gods are surronded with and created. I am not going to do a whole class on greek mythology so good luck. Its also my opinion. And I am not pretending to know everything, I may even be wrong.

Here is our second and final part : Maknae line : (Below the cut)

Gunwook as Athena

Athena is one of the 12 olympians. She was not born from Kronos and eaten by him but is actually a daughter of Zeus. She is the godess of widsom and of strategic war. Even if she is the godess of widsom she still as little moments of anger we will say (Arachnée as well as Medusa). She is one of the godess that is a virgin and never take a husband.

What you have to remember with Athena is her widsom, she is someone with a vision. In a case of a war there is two people that will be needed : Ares (which more of the brutal force) and Athena which will focus more on the strategic parts of a battle. If Athena takes part in a battle actively you know that normally it will be done fair and square. She respects the rules.

In her iconography Athena is represented as a warrior godess. She has an armor, an helmet as well as a shield. And what allows one to identify her no matter what is the presence of the aegis (égide in french) as well as the decapitated head of Medusa.

But mostly one is able to identify her with her warrior like appaerance with her helmet, armor and shield.

Now concerning Gunwook I feel like the link is quite obvious.

Gunwook is brilliant. He is the top student, class president, and we saw with the Kill this love stage that he has a strategic mind as well as a vision. He is able to understand the strenght of everyone around him and then put it together to build a strategy.

We could expect something that is truly giving a warrior vibe, with the helmet, shield and those two symbols of Athena with the aegis and the decapitated head. Even if they will go with a softer version.

Ricky as Dyonisius

This one is kinda confirmed as well lol.

Dyonisius is in most version the son of Zeus, some say that he died and then his father made him become a god because of the affection he had for him. Or in other versions he is an human that was transformed into a god because he was the one that invented the wine and gods liked wine.

Dyonisus is the god of wine, fertility of the soils, theater and party. In his iconographic representations he is always represented with the thyrse (it’s a kind of stick with a pine cone on it), some grape vine and he also has a company of many exotic animals as well as satyr and nymphs.

Why putting them together ? I feel like ricky is actually a very extroverted person and the life of the party. Like I totally imagine going up to someone first and just try to be funny ? If he wasn’t an idol I just know the guy would be partying like crazy in clubs worldwide wise lol

I feel like we definitely can expect some good references such as party crowded scene, having a cup in a hand. I doubt they will represent him with lots of girlies around tho.

Gyuvin as Hestia

Hestia might be one of the most underrated goddess out here while she is so important.

Hestia is the oldest Olympian. The first one that Kronos ate. She is one of the virgin goddess as well as a member of the twelve Olympians.

She is the goddess of home, the hearth (fire pit of the sacred fire), domesticity and family. She was the guardian of the sacred fire (hearth) and was essential to the Greek mythology rites.

She is a very quiet goddess and is rarely talked about and represented even though she was central character and extremely important.

In every city there was the hearth, for her, and for every sacrifice she was the first goddess that was received them.

Hestia is very important because throughout the time the notion family was essential and central, the clan you came from truly mattered in society as well as where you belonged.

In her rare representations she is standing up, with a vieil over head, with a strict expression close to a fire.

Why Gyuvin as Hestia ? Because for me Gyuvin represents home. He is able to make everyone feels at ease. He is central and everyone seem to fly close to him. He is a part of what ties all the members together. I feel like the hugs he gives make you feel at home.

I’m seeing something definitely with warm tones, little fire like summer camp type of fire, as there is not that much representation on her I really want them to make him feel like home. Lots of warm colors, smiles, lemonade and cute little snacks. Just home.

Yujin as Ares

Okay so I can already feel the complains from here but hear me out.

Ares is the god of war. Like the violent one, the bloody ones. And often people only remember him as that. The violent god.

But he was way more than that. He an olympian that never raped anyone. He killed without hesitation his daughter rapist. He was as well the protector of cities, the god of courage as well as the god of masculinity.

He was a protector of women. One of the very few people that Aphrodite ever truly loved. He was globally a big softie and that can be seen in the way he is portrayed in his representations. He was also a very good defender of gay love and gay representations.

In his iconography he is or despised as the god of war, with shield and weapons on as well as his armor . Or he is represented as the man that is enamoured of Aphrodite. He was a very handsome man and muscular.

Why am I putting Yujin as him then ? Because I feel like yes Yujin lives to be a menace because he is silly like that but he is also someone that seems to be very deep and well thought for his age. I totally imagine him taking the side of his girl schoolmates to watch over them. He is deeply loved and I totally can see him growing up to be an ally and truly supports and protect lgbtq people.

Representation wise I feel like if they put him in an armor with a sword he would be really happy so I want that only for him to be happy. In a more realistic tone I feel like it would be more discreet with like weapons on the floor and very pensive poses.

Impression now: ALITOOO MY FRIEND ALITOOO WAAHHHH he's my second favorite Barian and one of my top favorite Zexal characters overall...just absolutely won my heart from his first episode on. His design rocks (human and Barian flavored), his personality is so fun and all his duels blast my brain to smithereens. I love his boxing/fist fighter motif!!! I love his little parallels with Nistro, who's another one of my fav Zexal guys. HE WAS EVEN ITALIAN. AND BISEXUAL.

Favorite moment: ooouughh the fuckign. sunken coliseum mythirian number duel where he's just off the shits evil and having that tag duel with yuma and dextra makes me unweeelllllll it's one of my favorite duels I LIKE THAT WE GET SOME MOMENTS OF ALITO BEING A LITTLE FREAK. NOT HIS FAULT BUT I DO LOVE TO SEE IT. also just like. the little scenes of him hanging out with Girag in the stupid gym storage room make me laugh so hard. College AU compliant yugioh activities.

Idea for a story: I want Alito and Tori to hang out some more post-canon ;__; Like maybe kind of a date but also just like. Unpopular opinion: APPARENTLY Alito is just super underrated in general??!? which is baffling to me, he's fantastic. I guess my unpopular opinion is just that he's good??!?? I LOVE HIM.

Favorite relationship: His dynamic with Yuma is genuinely just so fucking good and I spent the back chunk of Zexal 2 on the edge of my seat over whether or not they were going to mend their friendship..... I recently got into this character, actually! I had to read up on him before answering, so I could be accurate lolz. I hope these can satisfy!

Julius The Dressmaker Headcanons

Doesn't want to admit it, but he's an extremely jealous man. I mean if someone has something he doesn't and he wants it, he's not above taking it.

This also applies to his relationships. How do you think him and Killian work together??? It's called, "if I can't have you no one else can."

Absolutely power hungry. I would say on a scale of Candy Pop to Night Terrors he's pretty close to Night Terrors power hungry. Which is scary in and of itself.

With that being said, he doesn't live in the mansion. He stays in his shop away from the creeps. He does know some of them, though.

He hates his bracelets. They're a constant reminder that he isn't as powerful as he hopes to be.

Surprisingly a good cook. Makes dishes his mom used to make for special holidays and events.

Speaking of which, he LOVES holidays. Not just for the increased business, but also loves the colors and the idea of gift giving. He likes being able to measure love.

Very in other people's personal space, but doesn't like his breached. He's super picky about who he let's near him, which includes who gets close to him.

Very outgoing, surprisingly. When he does go out, he is usually the life of the party. Cracking jokes, telling stories, dancing, partying. He truly is a party boy at heart.

With that being said, he doesn't party often. He usually spends his time in his shop, making dresses. It's only on rare occasions you can catch him going to a bar or club. He spends most of his days drinking alone in his shop.

Favorably, he would be out with his boyfriend Killian over anyone else. Even though they have a toxic, deranged relationship, they still lean on each other for most things. And Julius has abandonment issues. (Self projecting)

Julius actually believes other demons are quite useless. He doesn't get along with most of the other demons, especially Kagekao. He thinks that he's too playful and is too much of a trickster to get a job well done.

However, he does get along with Candy Pop alright. They aren't on best terms but they can tolerate each other's presence, even if just for the sake of mutual acquaintances.

Has formed a sort of pack between him, Vine, and Jason. They don't go after the same people, and sometimes work together to create beautiful pieces. But for the most part, the pact is to stay out of one another's way/out of sight out of mind ideology.

OK well... You opened the OTP box... I will keep it brief with both of these so I don't bore every single person that reads to death but I could go on about both of these ships for millennia.

VINEMARROW -

-They fell for one another over a few years of being on the Ops together -- they didn't go to Atlas together or anything since Vine is a little older, and they didn't really know much of one another until they worked together.

-It was both fast and slow. A lot of longing + obviously it is against the team's principles to even get too /friendly/ let alone anything more, especially with the team shaken by a recent loss etc etc... so neither of them knew the other had any feelings for a really long time.

-I imagine a lot of small things.. excuses to go on missions together, lots of sparring, etc.. any excuse to make any kind of contact. Like the worst longing of any rwby ship ever.

-Since Vine is typically so inexpressive and good at hiding his feelings Marrow knew really quickly that something was up though... like Vine laughing at his stupid jokes and Marrow is like, okay Vine has literally never laughed at anything before. I think he likes me.

-I have a whole AU where Vine survives / v7+8 are different and they have a kid together and then get married. Her name is Moss and she is my everything + she is their everything also. There is so much more to all of this but it's already getting too long sorry.

-Marrow's mom ( who we also have an OC for ) loves Vine so much. I think she is a big part of Marrow's personal life and she adores Vine. OK sorry stopping myself before I keep going. I am literally carrying vinemarrow on my shoulders forever.

GLYNDARAVEN -

-Went to Beacon together....you can imagine their dynamic. Glynda being so annoyed that she works so hard to be a good student + STRQ getting special treatment isn't lost on her, so she has a really heavy rivalry with all of them, Raven especially. She won't think about why though.

-Lots of frustration on both ends but despite it they start to get close... late night studying together for exams..competing on missions... getting coffee at midnight in the library...shoulder-checking eachother in the halls and then blushing about it... imagine it.

-Finally during Beacon's dance during the Vytal festival in their final year Glynda confronts Raven outside and kisses her... Raven kisses her back and then shoves her away and they don't speak again.

-It's years and years and they go on their separate paths -- first Raven working for Ozpin, then the mission with Summer, then Raven's fleeing. Glynda stays at Beacon as a professor and then as headmistress, working alongside Ozpin, and she starts receiving letters....

-I think they both miss eachother so painfully and despite their clashing ideals they cant stay away from one another. Glynda and Raven are both so so intelligent that neither of them can get the best of the other in a debate; they're the only ones that feel like they're enough to handle each other and it's true... they have a lot of angst and also can be so cute I think. I could talk about them for years they are so underrated. I think Glynda could have fixed Raven

-Raven coming to Glynda's window at night and Glynda shoos her away but relents and lets her in and they hold each other and cry.

OK this is so long sorry. I can not emphasize the amount of thoughts I have about both of these ships but I kept it as small as I could sorry. (runs away)

Forgive me for hijacking my JF fanblog for this, an overly long rapture about Dorothy L Sayers's fabulous Gaudy Night

Or don't, I don't care. But either way, I'll be back to the regularly scheduled programming eventually, not that it was ever very regularly scheduled.

Anyhow-

I love Gaudy Night. One of my favorite books. It's not perfect, but it's brilliant, and that's better. Brilliance is rarely perfect because it requires creativity and an element of risk. Gaudy Night takes risks that don't all work, but when they do they are sublime.

I think the book is purposely messy and layered in ways where you can assume you know what Sayers was trying to say but can also get totally different things out of it. Purposeful in a choose-your-own-adventure way. You can read it as being purely feminist and ignoring class, or you can read it as being about women who are purely feminist and ignore class (to their detriment and ultimately peril). You can read it as Harriet falling in love with Peter or you can read it as Harriet discovering she was always a little bit in love with him. You can read it as being about women who prioritize integrity or you can read it as being about women who have grown comfortable and cloistered from real world responsibilities. And, of course, you can read it as women being cloistered from real life responsibilities or you can read it as female academics being held to a standard of responsibility that would never be expected of male ones. So many things to explore!

Also, it happens to speak to a lot of things I'm going through right now, though more in specific motifs than in the central conflict per se. (In my case, without being too personal, it's mostly the theme of ruminating endlessly over a choice that, once I've decided, will have felt inevitable.) So that kind of feeling of sitting in Harriet's headspace- and what a clearly defined headspace it is!- is pretty wonderful if jarring.

And so much amazingness- the punt? The chessmen?! Placetne domina?!? Yes, even the dog collar, because the way it's used is just kind of perfect. (And my mandatoryish JF reference here- as in my previous (re)blog, I really wonder if the idea for the dog collar in Here's What We Do came from this book. The conceptual resemblance is pretty uncanny.)

And human feelings!! Like, I came away from this book being genuinely unsure if I'd like either Harriet or Peter if I knew them in real life. Harriet is really judgmental in a way that I've never particularly liked in people, and Peter is smug in a way that would get my goat pretty quickly. But they're messy and in this book Harriet in particular feels real (and Peter feels real through her eyes) and messy real people are the most fun to read about. And "intellectual" romances are the best because the people in them think so much and get so mushy. They're really a perfect pair for this sort of thing and are loveable and compelling on their own terms.

(I also think, incidentally, that Busman's Honeymoon is a wonderful book, if somewhat ridiculous in the mystery and village-folk bits, and really underrated as an exploration of the challenge that Miss De Vine gives Harriet as to what happens when two intellects, and independent forces, marry. Where does one give way, and where does one stand firm? And what does it mean once someone has made a decision and feels at peace with it, and once someone has been pursuing something for so long and finally has it? How do they rebalance the relationship now that it is Harriet who, in many ways, has the emotional upper hand? And the ending is a LOT in a really great way.)

Though... I'll take a sec to rant about the miniseries version of Gaudy Night, with the full acknowledgement that I'm far from the first to do so. No chessmen? No dog collar? No Reggie Pomfret? No proposal letter? No St George? The creator sitting down and apparently saying "hmmm, people are OBVIOUSLY fans of Gaudy Night because of the intricate mechanisms of the poison pen mystery"? The way in which Peter is so pushy and off-putting at the beginning, and is the one who brings up the idea of academic women being repressed? The gratuitously edited dialogue? The way that the proposal at the end is portrayed as inevitable rather than the leap of faith that Peter helps Harriet to make? The fact that Peter NEVER APOLOGIZES?! Not even Harriet Walter and Edward Petherbridge save it, and that says a lot, because they're really good in it, even if I always thought that Petherbridge was just SLIGHTLY off as Wimsey (over-mannered and not particularly dynamic, though with great subtle physical comedy)- but Harriet Walter was always spot on and I'm kind of in love with her in this role, or possibly want to be her, I'm never sure (though I'd never pull off the hairstyle).

Though I will say, re the Peter never apologizing bit: the other two miniseries ARE genuinely good, I think- Strong Poison diverges from the book but in interesting ways except for the ending, which I'll get to in a minute, and Have His Carcase is basically as good an adaptation as anyone could have expected and the pacing edits generally work- but I think the whole miniseries run has one uniting flaw, which is that rather than follow Sayers's lead and have the trilogy deconstruct the idea that Peter is trying to wear Harriet down into proposing, the show seems to almost purposely perpetuate it. It's by far the most explicit in the Gaudy Night adaptation, but in Strong Poison, the awful flip of the ending in which it's Peter running after Harriet sets this up as the guy chasing the girl, and the very over the top attempts at compliments and physical affection in Have His Carcase are very irritating, even as the show does a phenomenal job with the argument scene. Gaudy Night only makes it worse, of course, with that cringeworthy scene at the dance and the complete lack of any depth to their relationship beyond what seems like perpetual nudging on his part, culminating in a basically sterile proposal scene that really does feel like he finally managed to wear her down. (I did read that Petherbridge and Walter rewrote it to be better, and I don't doubt that it was much worse originally, but it still is not great.)

Finally, a few random fancasting notes:

I've never really thought overmuch about modern day fancasting, but I feel like Tom Goodman-Hill would be very good as Wimsey. No opinion on who'd play Harriet.

I've also had this feeling that I'd have LOVED to see a British-accented David Hyde Pierce in the role of Wimsey back in the day (of course he's too old now). Would he be pretty similar to Petherbridge? Maybe. But I think that he'd bring something really interesting to the part that I'd have loved to see. Or maybe I just unreasonably love Niles Crane, also a possibility.

I think that if any new version of the LPW books comes out, Harriet Walter should play the Dowager Duchess. She would be absolutely wonderful.

first their interactions (i love that kinda dynamic, i don't think it's a surprise at that point). then there came the "at least for 5 minutes" moment and i was hooked. like, putting the thing you value the most aside for your partner, if that's not caring i dunno what is.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

tetcho knowing jono more than anyone, including their fucking captain has me so unwell... mostly when we had seen him like "tone it down you're scaring the civilians" then BOOM. and when jono is, in general, the most perceptive out of the two (i mean, basically super senses, but y'know). for all the bickering and silly moments they do sure trust and value each other a lot and *screms* i need them to reunite. i know it's gonna happen, but pls, i need to see it.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

ofc it was the perfect crime arc (i say, as if all 3 had interacted in any other arc). like, ranpo was the one mainly interacting with mushi directly but,,, the book,,, and i already liked ranpoe, so it was "what if the 3 of them smooched".

What are your favorite things about the ship?

both ranpo and poe know the whole story with yokomizo, which is very tasty in "making mushi come out of his shell and heal" ways (besides, the fact they're a detective and a writer mhmmmmm).

i like tachigin and i like higugin, so the possibility of me considering an ot3 was there and it happened.

they all have their stuff (i say, as if everyone in bsd didn't), and they all know what's like to be in the mafia so... with time and working stuff out, there's room for very cute stuff and a pretty chill relationship.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

i like it, but mostly default to "gin has two hands"/i don't really ship tachi and higuchi separatedly.

i know we don't see the full guild together much, but them being paired up through all the arc, with all the room that gives for them to bond.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

dunno, the idea of steinbeck being totally unphased/actually into the eldritch stuff when knowing what lovecraft is it's very tasty. not surprisingly, when he grows vines from his veins, but you get me.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

i'm not super big on it (like with bramcraft, for example), but i like it. so none, really.
