Huge Saharan Dust Cloud Could Bring Hazy Skies, Spectacular Sunsets to the United States

An enormous plume of dust from the Saharan desert has blown 5,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean and will likely reach the Gulf Coast by the middle of this week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Every year, winds carry about 800 million metric tons of dust from North Africa across the Atlantic coast, a phenomenon known as the Saharan Air Layer, according to a statement from NASA’s Earth Observatory. So this plume isn’t altogether unusual—but “the size and visible impact of this particular plume makes it stand out,” reports Amanda Kooser for CNET.

The Goddard Earth Observing System generated this model of the Saharan dust plume as it traverses the Atlantic Ocean, as it looked on June 18. The map measures aerosol optical thickness, a metric for studying how well light travels through clouds of particles.

The plume is clearly visible from space. NASA satellite images taken on June 18 showed that the expanse of dust stretched about 1,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, according to the statement.

On Sunday, NASA astronaut Doug Hurley posted a photo of the plume as seen from the International Space Station to Twitter. “We flew over this Saharan dust plume today in the west central Atlantic. Amazing how large an area it covers!” Hurley says.

“Large plumes of Saharan Dust routinely track into the Atlantic Ocean from late spring into early fall,” meteorologist Haley Brink tells Judson Jones of CNN. “Every so often, when the dust plume is large enough and trade winds set up just right, the dust can travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic and into the US.”

CNN meteorologist Tyler Mauldin says that the most noticeable thing about the plume from the ground will be how it changes the sky, giving it a “milky haze.” In the Caribbean, residents have already started to witness darkened, murky skies and “hazardous” air quality, Dánica Coto reports for the Associated Press. Public health officials in Puerto Rico are worried about how the extra air pollution will affect patients battling respiratory problems related to COVID-19 and have urged residents to stay indoors and use air filters if possible, reports Coto.

While the dust particles might soften the blue of the sky during the day, they will also likely make for spectacular sunsets. The dust will float into the U.S. at altitudes of 30,000 to 50,000 feet. “The dust will be primarily at higher altitudes, so the main impact will be some especially colorful sunrises sunsets,” the National Weather Service notes in a Tweet.

“Due to more sunlight being scattered by the dust particles, there will likely be more vibrant sunsets and sunrises of the orange and red side of the visible light spectrum,” David Wally, a National Weather Service meteorologist, tells Johnny Diaz of the New York Times.

The dry, dusty wind could also potentially suppress tropical cyclones by lowering humidity levels and limiting the formation of clouds, Wally tells the Times. This unusually large plume of dust could impact this season’s storms, although it’s still early in hurricane season, which typically runs June 1 through November 30.

An increase in small particles in the air might also trigger dust-related allergies for those exposed, according to Mauldin for CNN. Although they will likely blow into the U.S. at high altitudes, some tiny dust particles will make their way to the surface and could be irritating, especially for those with respiratory problems or asthma.

Dust from North Africa plays a key ecological role in North and South America, according to the NASA statement. The particles can fertilize soils in the Amazon rainforest and shore up beaches in the Caribbean.

Speed Force Conduit: People who, for whatever reason, are connected to the Speed Force are sometimes called Speed Force Conduits. This means that they are connected to the Speed Force and are tethered to it.

Accelerated Healing: The Speed Force connection allows the speedster's body recover from injury much faster than normal.

Enhanced Senses: The Speed Force enhances the speedster's senses, allowing them to perceive the world at a rate attuned how fast they can react.

Phasing: Speed Force conduits can tap into the Speed Force to vibrate their molecules in a way to achieve intangibility for short bursts, allowing them to phase through objects.

Speed Force Aura: The Speed Force also manifests an aura around the speedster and whatever they are carrying, protecting them from adverse effects of their speed, such a friction with the air.

Superhuman Durability: The Speed Force Aura also protects speedsters from kinetic impacts, which in turn, makes them much more durable and resistant to injury than any normal human.

Superhuman Stamina: While not unlimited, the connection to the Speed Force does bolster the speedsters stamina well beyond the limits of a normal human.

Superhuman Speed: The main effect of the connection is to allow a speedster to move at vast superhuman speeds.

Vortex Creations: Speed Force conduits are able to create vortices of air by running in circles or rotating their extremities at super-speed. These vortices can be used for a number of effects.

Speed Force Empathy: Max can sense when another Speed Force conduit is troubled, and can be drawn to the location of that speedster.

Abilities

Meditation: Max practices a form of meditation called "hypermediation", that allows him to detect various aspects that are inside the Speed Force, such as a voice or a visual.

Multilingual: He is able to speak Japanese, English, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, and possibly more.

Origin

Max Mercury was born in the early 19th century. By 1838, he had been assigned as a messenger at a fort. He made friends with the local Blackfoot clan. Unfortunately his fort commander, who did not trust any of them, leveled a bounty on the clan and ordered a full-scale massacre. The shaman of the clan, with his dying breaths, told Max that many tribesman were returning from the hunt, and that they would be ambushed if not warned quickly. With a pinkish substance, the shaman drew a lightning bolt on Max's chest, gave a prayer to the god of the storm and the wind, and died. Max ran faster and faster and faster still. As swift as the wind, he took the soldiers' weapons and caught the Blackfoot arrows in midair. He devoted the next few years of his life to protecting the natives and the settlers from one another as Ahwehota, or as he was better known, Windrunner. However, one night during a thunderstorm, Max felt drawn to the lightning from deep within his heart. He ran as he had never run before, breaking all barriers, and he began to be drawn into the speed force, the energy field that gives speedsters their power. He finally had met his glorious destiny, but fear stopped him, sending him ricocheting through time to New York of July 14, 1891.

Again and again, he tried to get to the speed force and failed. He continued his super-hero career as Lightning, Blue Streak, and Quicksilver between each jump in time.

Golden Age

By 1947, Max had established the his current name, Max Mercury. He was sometimes called "The Whirlwind of the West." He often would team up with other speedsters, including the original Flash, Jay Garrick, and Johnny Quick, who would never believe that there was a speed force. Somewhere along the line, he got to know Zatara, the great magician who is father of Zatanna.

In 1949, Jay Garrick saved him from the Screaming Skull, a debt which Max vowed only to pay in a life or death situation.

In late 1947, Max saved the small town of Manchester, Alabama from Dr. Morlo and his toxic bombs at great cost to himself. Max's lungs were burned and his blood was tainted when he breathed in Morlo's mustard gas. Fortunately, the local physician, Dr. David Claiborne, found him lying in a culvert. David and his wife, Laura, cared for Max, who was out for nine weeks. He awoke to a new year and a new home. With David, he found a best friend with whom he shared a love of fishing, tennis, and the "Shadow" radio show. Laura, however, was special. She was lonely because David was always so busy, being one of the few doctors in the area. Max stayed with the Claibornes for quite some time. One lonely night, Max and Laura sat on the rooftop, looking at the stars. Laura felt so lonely with David always gone, and she and Max had grown to love each other. The inevitable happened. When David returned home, Max just ran. He jumped in time again, this time to New Year's Day, 1957.

By the sixties, Max again showed up, teaming with Johnny Quick as they fought the villain Savitar. Max chased after Savitar, a sprint that sent him flying into the seventies. He began to keep a journal in Korean, and he would often probe the speed force, trying to sense the presence of Savitar.

Eventually, Max gave up on his superspeed. Living in the Central Keystone area, he got a job selling subway tokens for MTA.

However, when Professor Zoom was in town, pretending to be the late Barry Allen, Jay Garrick and Johnny Quick enlisted his aid, recalling the Screaming Skull incident. Jay had kept Max's old, forties costume. Max joined Jay, Johnny, and the current Flash, in fighting Professor Zoom. He began to teach Wally to find the Zen of speed, thus gaining the nickname, "The Zen Guru of Speed."

After Zoom was defeated, Max disappeared for awhile. When Wally was trapped in time after adding Johnny's speed formula (3x2(9yz)4a) to his own speed, Max appeared. He could only remain at that high speed for a short time, but he taught Wally a valuable lesson about making decisions. Later, Max would occasionally keep an eye on Wally, peering into his house through the window or watching from a nearby alley.

Mentor to Impulse

Max again showed up after Bart Allen had arrived from the 30th century, to teach Wally about the Speed Force, help train Bart, and lend a hand in defeating Kobra, who had unleashed Project Morpheus on Keystone City.

After trying to locate Laura Claiborne, only to find that she had died a while ago, Max learned that he had a daughter, Helen, who still lived in Manchester. Wanting to keep an eye on her, he decided to move there. Wanting Bart to be taught the finer secrets of speed, Wally sent him with Max to Manchester. Max, known to the average citizens as Max Crandall, Bart Allen's uncle, always stressed keeping a secret identity. He would put Bart through challenging drills, such as solving jigsaw puzzles in midair; dodging knives, axes, maces, swords, etc; and running obstacle courses while dodging knives, axes, maces, swords, etc.

One day, Max met his daughter, Helen, in the library. She took an instant liking to him. Not knowing that he was her father, she would always flirt with him, but he obviously never returned those feelings. He often would help her around the house. Bart, also not knowing the secret, would urge their relationship on.

One night, after Bart had returned from fighting Blockbuster, Max disappeared. He had been kidnapped by Savitar's ninjas and taken to his fortress, where he was tortured. Fortunately, just before he was to be killed, he escaped. He ran to his home, where he was met by Wally, who took him to the hospital. Using a map carved on Max's chest, he and Jesse Quick went off to fight Savitar. When Jesse destroyed Savitar's speed battery, Max felt a surge of speed energy, and was able to help the others fight Savitar. During this adventure, Johnny finally accepted Max's lessons about the Speed Force, and perished saving his daughter. After Savitar was defeated, Max and Bart returned to Manchester.

One day, Max and Bart showed up at Helen's to find her being beaten up by her ex-husband. Max's scream--"Take your hands off my daughter!"--revealed to Bart and Helen Max's secret. Max had to tell Helen the whole story, including his and Bart's identities. However, they now shared even closer bond.

Into the Speed Force

Max finally become one with the Speed Force after his body was taken over by Jay's nemesis, Rival.

The Speed Force eventually sent Max, along with Barry, Wally, and Bart, to an alternate Earth. Here, they decided to allow Bart to absorb the power of the Speed Force so that he could be sent back home to defeat Superboy-Prime.

Fun Facts

Max Mercury has gone by many nicknames over the years. Akin to the 'Scarlet Speedster', Max was called the Whirlwind of the West, Zen Guru of Speed, and Laughing Robin Hood.

july 2018

a week into a nightmarish state created under the watchful eye of stryker has taken a toll on the mansions inhabitants, separating, wounding and even taking the lives of those who are doing everything in their power to put an end to it. there’s one question that is looming over everyone’s mind as they navigate their way through this hell: what or who caused such a sudden slip? it quite literally happened overnight and aside from the hordes of sentinels that guard every city corner, the culprit that brought them to this dystopian future far worse from which they came is still unknown.

with the sudden influx of those opposing stryker’s reign, the entire state of new york has gone on lockdown. any and all non-civilians found roaming the city were brought into several different facilities scattered throughout the state without a second thought. there’s no telling what will happen here, so it’s best to prepare for anything.

as stated above, stryker’s men (with the aid of the sentinels) collected any and all non-civilians in sight and brought them to holding facilities located in each of the five boroughs: manhattan, bronx, brooklyn, queens and staten island.

each facility is heavily guarded by stryker’s men who are given the instructions to keep those captured by any means necessary.

the staten island facility is the base of operations for stryker’s plans as he watches over the chaos, the bronx facility is where surveillance is monitored, the queens facility is where sentinels are produced and stored, the brooklyn facility is where mutants and metahumans alike are brought in order to get experimented in the labs and the manhattan facility handles the transport of those in captivity and stryker’s men.

using this knowledge some things characters may attempt are distracting guards to shut down surveillance (so that neighboring teams of stryker are none the wiser of any attempts to break free), sabotaging the sentinels, using transportation vehicles as a way out, etc.

those captured are being held in concrete holding cells with a single door that is only accessible from the outside. inhibitor collars (ref one and two) are also in use.

below the cut are 5 randomized groups of those in each facility. while you may continue all event threads, if you wish to post a team specific starter make sure to signify somewhere (either in the text post itself or in the tags) which group it is meant for.

this plot drop will last from tuesday, july 10th at 10 pm gmt until the end of the event altogether, monday, july 16th at the same time.

Somewhere in New York but outside the city, they don't need 'work' to whisk them away on a day that's supposed to be only for them. Nor for any villains to crash their wedding when undoubtedly there will will be more supers/vigilantes at the wedding too.

There is a marriage of traditions in between Dick and Peter as Dick is Roma and Peter is Jewish. The bread ceremony takes place as well as getting married under the chuppah, the breaking of the glass and the seven blessing.

Considering they're both giant goofs, I imagine they both try to do it to each other. Peter would grab a bite of the cake with the fork and then try to get frosting on Dick's face.

Pete, they'd discussed it a few times and once they'd been together for a while Peter started thinking more about it. He makes sure he talks to Mar'i before doing it though, he knows she will always be the most important person in Dick's life and he wants to respect that.

who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar ( or neither )

They both walk down the aisle and meet each other there

I'd think they would wear traditional suits, though Peter tried to get a little coy and his cufflinks have Spider-Man on them. And the tie Peter wears is one that used to belong to his Uncle Ben.

Blues, bluish greys and white.

I feel like Clark definitely gives one, he seems like the feelsy type and probably Roy. Johnny gives one as well and Peter dies of embarrassment and is thiiiis close to webbing his mouth shut.

Mar'i is the only one who was given a bouquet so she gets to keep hers pretty much all night unless she chooses to toss it.

what their wedding photos are like ( are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? )

They have a mixture of silly and sweet pictures. It's the first time Peter is getting married (damn you Memphisto) and he's got a lot of emotions going on. There's cake smashing pictures, first look pictures with Peter doing stupid faces at the camera before either of them turns around. They sneak away during the reception to have a few moments to themselves and there's some beautiful, sappy pictures taken here of the two of them.

what sort of food they have at the reception

Probably something fancy like steak, but there's french fries as a side option as well because Peter has an addiction.

who cries first during the ceremony

Oh man... who doesn't. May cries, Peter cries, Clark definitely gets watery eyes, MJ too, JOSEPH.

how wild their reception gets

Oh man... wild, specially considering that there's a bunch of inebriated superheroes there, much of them who have known each other for years. Johnny is one of the first people to get drunk and he probably ends up making out with at least one person that night. Alfred dances, if you want to consider that wild.

what their rings are like

Plain silver bands, but have inscriptions inside of them.

what sort of favours they have

Probably something cool that won't get left behind like a coffee blend since they both drink too much of it, or a mason jar with desserts or little bottles of champagne

where they go for their honeymoon

Maybe somewhere overseas, a beach would be nice. Go out and explore a bit, somewhere they've never been.

something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony

At one point Dick accidentally grabs Kaine thinking he's Peter (cons of being triplets) and Peter is behind Dick just laughing.

oh dear lord on a cheese kabob this question is difficult

i mean fuck do you know how many awesome characters, crossovers, and ideas would be fun to play around with? so. many. i mean you have your basic peter parker and dick grayson, that’s simple. and tony stark and bruce wayne’s rivalry is always fun to explore. and then you have to ask yourself whether you’re talking about the marvel cinematic universe or the x-men movie series or the comics, because if so, then that’s a whole different beast altogether.

but i think, if i really did have to choose, i’d go for johnny storm and wally west.

hear me out, okay? aside from the glaringly obvious fact that they both have acrobat vigilante boyfriends, i feel like their personalities mesh just enough for them to get along, but are different enough to be interesting.

they’re both cheerful, surface-level lighthearted characters who hide their much deeper feeling behind a façade of cheerfulness and bad jokes. they both have these overbearing authority figures, superpowered or not, that they love with all their heart but want them to treat them like an equal, which eventually does happen. they both are interested in mechanics, the down-and-dirty work of it, just because it’s fun, and it’s an insight into how their minds work: solving problems in a basic but efficient way that doesn’t always have to be full of fancy thinking and geniuses, but just some good observation work, a hunch, and some superpowers.

but the top reason i’d love to see these two interact is the relationship they have with their powers. both wally and johnny are absolutely in love with their abilities as a superhero. it courses through them, it’s a part of them, it makes them feel alive. however, it’s also the thing they fear most. well, maybe not most, but they’re both significantly frightened by their powers simply because of their magnitude. they don’t know the extent of them, they don’t know how powerful they really are. and they’re terrified to find out, because the limit is much further away than they let anyone think, and if they did truly let loose one day, they could kill a lot of people (which is shown a bit in dc, when wally lost control of his powers and killed a bunch of ppl, including roy, on accident. however, is i still think that wasn’t wally at his peak.) anyway, wally’s done some crazy stuff after absorbing all that power from the speedforce, and if we’re being honest, he doesn’t run through the speedforce, the speedforce runs through him. as for johnny, (as far as i know, i’m not completely up to date on ff comics) hasn’t actually found an upper limit for his powers. sure, he’s done things that cost him almost all of his energy and caused him to become exhausted. but he hasn’t hit his limit. and he can become a supernova if he wants to. he was once even forced to become the sun. the fucking SUN.

anyway, wally and johnny would just be a cool interaction to see, both because of their individual relationship with their powers and their fun, easy-going, but family and friend centered personalities.

Black Actors Who Played White Characters

Color blind casting, or non-traditional casting, has opened up opportunities for black actors, albeit slowly. There have been many black actors who played white characters, but there’s still room for more diversity in Hollywood overall.

White characters played by black actors have paid off at the box office because audiences appreciate an excellent performance – regardless of race. While many fans reacted negatively the casting of black actress Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, others were excited that such an accomplished actress was stepping into the role. Even Potter creator J.K. Rowling defended the casting choice.

In many cases, black actors who have taken on white roles have changed the way a character was seen forever. Red has been portrayed as black ever since Morgan Freeman played the part in the film adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption. We will always think of Agent J in Men in Black as Will Smith. Michael Clarke Duncan was so perfect for The Kingpin in Daredevil, that Marvel wrote a tribute to the actor when he passed.

Zendaya Coleman as Mary Jane Watson

In August 2016, it was announced that African American actress Zendaya Coleman will play Mary Jane Watson, Spider-Man’s love interest, in the 2017 Marvel reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming. Zendaya previously appeared in a number of Disney Channel shows, including KC Undercover and Shake It Up!, starring as the title character in the former.

Mary Jane (who, according to IMBb, will be called Michelle in the reboot) was played by Kirsten Dunst in the original Sony Spider-Man film series and by Shailene Woodley in scenes that were deleted from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the comics, Mary Jane is a pale redhead. Survey says? Change is good.

The casting decision ignited a mini-furor in fan communities, as such decisions have done in the past(and also this). James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, took to Facebook to address these concerns, writing:

I can’t respond to the racists – I’m not ever going to change their minds. But for the thoughtful majority of you out there:

For me, if a character’s primary attribute – the thing that makes them iconic – is the color of their skin, or their hair color, frankly, that character is shallow and sucks. For me, what makes MJ MJ is her alpha female playfulness, and if the actress captures that, then she’ll work. And, for the record, I think Zendaya even matches what I think of as MJ’s primary physical characteristics – she’s a tall, thin model – much more so than actresses have in the past.

Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger

Play: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Despite her accomplishments as an actor, there was backlash over Dumezweni’s casting as Hermione in the play. J. K. Rowling, the queen of having none of it, squashed the criticism, tweeting, “Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified Rowling loves black Hermione.” Other Harry Potter cast members supported Dumezweni in the role. Matthew Lewis tweeted, “And Neville Longbottom was blonde. I really don’t care. Good luck to her.”

Dumezweni said to the haters, “It stems from ignorance. They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative. I don’t think they understand how theater works. We’re here to heal you, make you smile and whisk you away.”

Will Smith as Robert Neville

Film: I Am Legend

Neville is the last man in New York City, or so he thinks. There have been many adaptations of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel, but this was the first time a black actor played the virologist.

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury

Films: The Avengers franchise

David Hasselhoff played Fury in a 1998 TV movie, but it’s Jackson who conjures a special kind of Fury.

Morgan Freeman as Red

Film: The Shawshank Redemption

In the book, Stephen King describes Red as white and Irish. The line “Maybe It’s because I’m Irish” was left in the movie as a nod to the book. Stage versions of the book now cast Red as black, thanks to Freeman’s iconic performance (which earned him an Oscar nomination).

Idris Elba as Heimdall

Films: Thor, Thor: The Dark World

In the Marvel comic series, Heimdall is a Norse god, but he’s just as mighty in the hands of Elba on screen.

Denzel Washington as Bennett Marco

Film: The Manchurian Candidate

Richard Condon’s 1959 novel was made into a film in 1962, with Frank Sinatra asBennett Marco. Washington, who lends something to every role he takes on, played Marco well enough in a so-so remake in 2004.

Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie

Film: Annie

Many actors have take on the role since 1982, most notably Aileen Quinn. But Wallis was a refreshing update to the white, freckled redhead. Wallis’s performance received a 2014 Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Brandy Norwood as Cinderella & Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother

Film: Cinderella

The 1997 ABC TV special was the first time Cinderella and other characters were played by black actors. Besides Norwood and Houston, Veanne Cox and Natalie Desselle played Cinderella’s stepsisters, and Whoopi Goldberg was Queen Constantina. Filipino-American Paolo Montalban played Prince Christopher.

Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm

Film: The Fantastic Four

Say what you will about the 2015 film, but Jordan was a refreshing update to Storm. Chris Evans, who played Storm in 2005, thought Jordan was a fine choice as well.

Will Smith as Agent J

Films: Men in Black franchise

In the Aircel comics, Lowell Cunningham and Sandy Carruthers depicted both agents as white. Smith, being a huge star (especially in 1997), was an easy choice as Agent J alongside Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K.

Michael Clarke Duncan as The Kingpin

Film: Daredevil

Duncan played the villain to perfection in 2003, and left his mark on the character. So much so that Marvelhailed him after his passing in 2012.

Pam Grier as Jackie Brown

Film: Jackie Brown

In Elmore Leonard’s book Rum Punch, Jackie Brown is a blonde flight attendant. Tarantino saw the character as black and specifically wanted Pam Grier for the role in his 1997 film.

Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent

Film: Batman

The Batman comic series portrayed Dent as white. Williams added his own special qualities to the villain onscreen in Tim Burton’s 1989 film. He also revealed that he was on course to play Two-Face in the sequel, but producers went another way, choosing Tommy Lee Jones.

Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Ted Ross, Nipsey Russell, and Richard Pryor

Film: The Wiz

One of the first black casts to take on the beloved 1939 The Wizard of Oz, the 1978musical was an instant hit with audiences and continues to be produced and toured worldwide.

Alfre Woodard, Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, and Others

Film: Steel Magnolias

The all black cast – rounded out by Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye, and Condola Rashad – appeared in the 2012 Lifetime remake, but faced a tough reception from the diehards of the 1989 movie.

Dwayne Johnson as Hercules

Film: Hercules (2014)

Hercules is Greek; The Rock is not. However, that didn’t stop him from being an awesome Hercules. Steve Reeves, who played Hercules in two different movies in the late ‘50s, would pull down some columns in approval. Kevin Korbo’s popular portrayal in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys ran from 1995 to 1999 and he was irked when producers turned him down for a cameo in the Dwayne Johnson film.

Eartha Kitt and Halle Berry as Catwoman

Film & TV Series: Catwoman & Batman

On the page of the comics, Catwoman is white and many fine actresses from Julie Newmar to Michelle Pfeiffer have played the character. But Eartha Kitt made Catwoman iconic with her famous growly voice in the late-’60s TV series and Halle Berry brought Catwoman back to black in the 2004 film.

Bernie Casey and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter

Films: James Bond franchise

Several white actors have played Leiter over the years in the Bond franchise, most notably Jack Lord. Casey took on the role in 1983 in Never Say Never Again; Wright brought weight and realness to the character in 2006’s Casino Royale and 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

Will Smith as Jim West

Film: Wild Wild West

Robert Conrad played James T. West in the popular 1960s TV series, with Will Smith portraying the character in the 1999 film.

David Oyelowo as Henry VI

Play: Henry VI

In 2000, David Oyelowo was the first black actor to play the English king for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sam Jones III as Pete Ross

TV Series: Smallville

In the comics, Clark Kent’s friend is white. Ross became a fan favorite when he stepped into the role in 2001 on the TV series.

Mos Def as Ford Prefect

Film: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy When fans saw 2005’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, they were delighted and puzzled to find Mos Def in the role of Ford Prefect opposite Martin Freeman’s Arthur Dent. Prefect is a red head in Douglas Adams’s book. Def’s version is significantly more cool than David Dixon’s Prefect on the BBC TV series, but both work in their own way.

Colin McFarlane as Gillian B. Loeb

Film: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight

Loeb was a corrupted baddie in the comics. McFarlane’s Loeb played him with complicated motivations in both films.

Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny

Film: Skyfall

Lois Maxwell played Miss Moneypenny for 23 years. Then four other actresses (Barbara Bouchet, Pamela Salem, Caroline Bliss, Samantha Bond) took on the role. Producers and cast kept the secret until Skyfall’srelease in 2012, as Naomie Harris became the first black Miss Moneypenny.

Laurence Fishburne as Perry White

Film: Man of Steel

Fishburne portrayed the first black the Editor in Chief at the Daily Planet in 2013’s Man of Steel. Several white actors, including John Hamilton, had portrayed the character up until then.

Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford

TV Series: Hannibal

Crawford has been played by Scott Glenn, Harvey Keitel, and Dennis Farina. Fishburne was tapped for the role of the FBI agent in the NBC series from 2013 to 2015.

I still love that when casting Iris and Joe West they thought “y'know, we could choose black actors. They’re white in the comics, but they don’t /have/ to be.” Which meant we got a black love interest to the hero (instead of the standard redhead or whatever.) And it meant we also got a black Wally West, so another black superhero.

And I love that DC said “Hey, what if we did that for the movie too?” Maybe it was just chance, maybe it was wanting to make the switch easier for fans of the Flash show, but they did it. So now we get a black Iris West on the big screen too.

And I love Marvel saying “y'know, we could make a black Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and a black Electro.” And putting Zendaya in Spider-Man. And giving us Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and a solo movie.

Cinematic superheroes, their sidekicks and their love interests seem to be slowly getting more diverse, and I am here. For. It!

LBR-Manhattan Picks Up His Trash

Batman 23 (The Brave and The Mold): So Bruce is investigating a murder and Swamp Thing shows up wanting a team-up cause the guy who died was his dad. This piece is awesome since Tom King was definitely channelling The Vision while writing this one-shot. A run-in with Kite-Man (Hell Yeah) points them in the direction of a hitman character that’s apparently been around in DC lore since the 90′s (explains the hair). He’s checking out the art museum and Swamp Thing has zero chill and ups and turns the guy into mulch from the inside out. Batman freaks out but Swamp Thing is like “justice!” and leaves.

Batwoman 03 (The Many Arms of Death Part Three): Kate is undercover getting a meeting with the corporate twins from the previous issue, and they up and know Kate is Batwoman, and Knife lurking in the ceiling. Before I go anymore in this, I just want to say how linguistically offsetting it is to have the twins named Elder and Younger; either go Elder and Junior or Older and Younger, it doesn’t sound right. So anyways Kate suits up and leaves getting attacked but not before finding out that the island is just one big bomb. She goes to where the main detonator is, but Knife ambushes her. Unfortunately, Kate expected that and called in the island warlords for assistance.

Daredevil 20 (Purple Part Four): So as it’s been implied, the Purple Children were the ones who brainwashed the entire world into forgetting that Matt Murdock was Daredevil. And that until Matt reveals his identity to a person they don’t remember knowing it previously (which is why Foggy knows its Matt and not Kristen doesn’t; he never took off the cowl in front of Kristen after the brainwashing). Seems Matt put the distance between the two for her safety. The pastor won’t absolve him from the guilt because Matt did what he thought was right, and there seems to be an Endgame to why Matt became a prosecutor this time around. Also the Purple Man wants his revenge and is waiting in the shadows.

The Flash 21 (The Button Part Two): So circling back from last week, the standard cover of this issue came in. Barry turned the Batcave into a crime scene after find Bruce bloodied and the Reverse Flash’s body, finding that the body is releasing the same type of energy that Barry emits when he’s the Flash. He doesn’t tell this to a recuperating Bruce, and goes and gets his time-travelling treadmill. Except Bruce anticipated it so he’s coming along no matter what. When travelling through time, Bruce and Barry see things that were connected to previous Crisises but have no memory of, so what is going on? Either way they come out of the time-stream in the Flash-Point version of the Batcave, complete with Thomas Wayne-Batman.

The Flash 22 (The Button Part Four): So after leaving the Flash-Point universe behind them, Barry and Bruce chase after Reverse-Flash, except something is wrong with the time-stream and they lose him. Reverse-Flash goes finds Doctor Manhattan and dies (probably from Manhattan not wearing pants). So Barry and Bruce might get erased from reality, except Jay Garrick shows up in a similar fashion that Wally West did during Rebirth. Except he doesn’t stick around and goes back into the Speed-Force. I’ve read a lot of theories, most saying that Jay will team up with Johnny Thunder and Superman during Doomsday Clock. Oh, and also Doctor Manhattan takes back the smiley face button.

Green Arrow 23 (The Rise of Star City Part Three): So Oliver thinks Fyff is dead cause their tree-hideout/fortress is in cinders, while Dinah is meeting up with Victoria the reporter to figure out the things with the Ley Lines and a prophecy supposedly fulfilled by Oliver. Emiko intercepts Cheshire from poisoning the cities water supply, and Arsenal comes in for back up. We all knew Fyff wouldn’t be dead, he’s with Broderick, who wants to turn Fyff to his side. Oliver goes and fights Eddie in the forest, giving him a good smack down until the next stage of his plan goes into motion.

Nightwing 21 (Split Second): So after Dick gives Shawn some space, Wally comes in for a team up because he’s bored in New York City (that’s the first time I’ve ever heard someone say that). They go out on the town, but there’s this villain with a harness (not unlike Tracer from Overwatch) who can pause time in bubbles and steal things. He uses this ability against the two, trapping Wally in a time bubble with an oncoming subway train about to hit him. Dick pushes him out of the bubble, and lucky Wally uses his super-speed to pull Dick out as well. They stop the thief, but it’s revealed that Blockbuster owned the tech for the harness.

The Mighty Thor 19 (The Asgard/Shi’ar War Part Five): Jane’s fighting back against the Phoenix until it communes with her, wanting Mjolnir and The Mother Storm encased in it. Seems that the Phoenix wants to destroy it, and fears The Mother Storm. Things aren’t going well until Jane wacks the Phoenix while communing with it, and Odinson comes in for reinforcements. Quentin takes this opportunity to commune with the Phoenix and become it’s new vessel, stopping the Phoenix. So the Shi’ar gods are tossed into space prison at Omnipotence City, and while Asgard and the Shi’ar Empire celebrate the defeat of the Phoenix, Malekith and Loki are planning their next phase of the Realm War. Roz Solomon from the last arc comes back and succeeds Jane as the representative of Earth. Oh and Jane sits Odinson down with the intention of telling him about being the new Thor. I really enjoyed this issue and as a result it's my pick of the week.
