Alright it's almost Hispanic Heritage month again yall. Here's a list of Animated characters that I, a Latina, cried over when I found out they were Latin American
For clarification, "Found out" means, having no previous knowledge of said characters and within the context of the show/movie they are confirmed Latin American.
(From the perspective of a Costa Rican 🇨🇷 specifically)
The entire Madgrial Family (Encanto)
The moment I saw the teaser trailer for Encanto I started crying. I was so BEYOND EXCITED to see real, true, positive beautiful Latin American representation in a Disney movie. I'm not even Colombian but seeing something like this become so popular made me so happy. Being able to fully understand "Dos Orugitas" in Spanish just hits so different, its not the same in English. It's such a beautiful step for Latin American representation, and I'm so excited to see what comes next for us. (Still holding out for my Latina Disney princess tho. And no, Elena doesn't count) I've also been told I look just like Mirabel and seeing a character that looks like me in a Disney movie just made my heart soar.
Luz Noceda (The Owl House)
Bruh a bisexual Latina with mommy issues AND she's bilingual??? She's just like me fr.
Lance McClain (V*ltron Legendary Defender)
He was my absolute favorite character in V*ltron and I will NEVER forgive them for ruining his arc and making him sad forever. He deserved a happy ending. He's NOT "just a boy from Cuba", he's so important and lovely.
Miles Morales (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse)
I'm not a comic book reader, so Into the Spiderverse was the first time I met Miles. Finding out he was Afro Latino made me heart soar. He's a sweet boy, such a good character in the movie, and definitely deserved the Oscar. Can't wait for the sequel.
Claire Nuñez (Tales of Arcadia)
Claire is literally such a badass. She's amazing, an amazing character, her story with Jim is beautiful. Love it when she's speaks Spanish. 10/10 character (Watch Tales of Arcadia it's really good)
Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera (Ducktales 2017)
King of my heart. Wholesome dork. Voiced by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Gosalyn Mallard (Ducktales 2017)
What I literal icon. I really really REALLY hope that the rumored Darkwing Duck reboot uses the DT 2017 versions of the DW characters cause this Gosalyn is a QUEEN
Hector Nieves Aka: Hi-Five (Glitch Techs)
Glitch techs was such a cute show it deserved to keep running. Screw Nickelodeon for canceling it just as it was starting to get interesting. Anyway this dork is adorable. Bilingual gamer king.
Troy Sandoval (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts)
Hi this cutie patootie is a literal king. He and Benson are so cute together. (GO WATCH KIPO AND THE AGE OF WONDERBEASTS ON NETFLIX I PROMISE YOU'LL LOVE IT)
Honorable Mentions:
(From top to bottom, left to right. Tumblr only allows 10 images at a time so I had to combine them)
• Señor Hueso and Capitan Piel, who together make the icon Don Suave (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2018):
I literally laugh my ass off whenever I watch the episode "Hidden City Job" and they do the whole Don Suave bit. Like it's so over the top yet accurate to telenovela characters that I can't help but laugh every time. When they first introduced Capitan Piel, I instantly laughed so hard before they even translated it because they did the whole Skin and Bones bit and I just thought it was so clever. 10/10 duo I'd love to see more of them. (GO WATCH ROTTMNT PLEASE THEY NEED ALL THE SUPPORT THEY CAN GET IF THEY WANT A SEASON 3)
• Vaggie (Hazbin Hotel)
People were giving Vivziepop shit accusing her of making Vaggie the "angry Latina stereotype) and I couldn't disagree more. Vaggie is perfectly fine as a character, and I can't wait to see what they do with her in the official Hazbin Hotel series!!
• Isabella Garcia-Shapiro (Phineas and Ferb)
Phineas and Ferb was the first fandoms I was ever in, and Isabella holds such a special place in my heart. Love her to pieces
• Marco Diaz (Star vs. The Forces of Evil)
Svtfoe was also one of the first fandoms I was in, so seeing one of the leads be portrayed as Mexican made 12 year old me so happy.
• Miguel Rivera (Coco)
Coco is such a beautiful movie, and I ONLY watch it in Spanish. Miguel is such a sweet and special boy, he really brought the joy of music back into his family.
• Soos (Jesus) Alzamirano Ramirez
Gravity Falls was ALSO one of the first fandoms I was in (PnF, GF, and Svtfoe were my main 3 for a time), and finding out this loveable goof was Latino made me really happy
• Princess Elena Castillo Flores
Now she may not be an official Disney princess (she doesn't meet all the requirements to be part of the franchise) but that doesn't mean she isn't excellent representation for young children. Although the show doesn't represent one specific Latin American country/culture, the show does have bits and pieces of many different LatAm cultures, and even some indigenous inspiration here and there with all the mythology aspects. It isn't perfect, but I do still appreciate Elena's presence in Disney.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month everyone!!!

Cartoons to watch if you’ve already watched all the popular cartoons out
This is for the people who’ve already watched Owl House, Amphibia, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Infinity Train, Avatar ETC. People who are in the loop but really have explored everything there is in it at the moment. So i’v compiled some modern cartoons that need more attention and aren’t as talked about. If you have more suggestions then put it in the notes and i’ll probably make a part two!
CRAIG OF THE CREEK IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. While pretty simplistic in the premise. Has very surprisingly interesting lore, lovable characters, probably the best diversity i’v ever seen in a cartoon and every episode has took simple concepts like getting a bike wheel or a cousin coming over for a family reunion into investing adventures! As the series goes on, you get little bits of backstory on The Creek and its always a neat surprise when you get it. You can watch the first two seasons on HboMAX and season 3 on the cartoon network app.
I’m putting in Kipo because I don’t see enough people talking about this show ITS SO GOOD?? The animation is gorgeous, the story is enthralling, THE SOUNDTRACK IS WHAT I’LL BE PLAYING TILL MY GRAVE, the characters are so realistic but charming. LIKE GOD JUST GO WATCH KIPO RN ON NETFLIX. Its about a girl who’s burrow was infiltrated by a mutant monkey, so now she must navigate through a post apocalyptic world of mutants in search of her father and people.
Speaking of Netflix, please go watch Kid Cosmic! Its adorable most of the time but can rip out your heart when it wants to. Also the soundtrack is also living rent free in my mind. With a lovable cast, really good fight scenes and an eye catching plot. You should seriously should go watch this if you love Sci Fi! Its a about a kid finding cosmic stones and decides to built a team of his grandpa, the teen who works at the diner, a toddler and a cat and they fight whoever is a threat to earth
Wow, Netflix has a lot of underrated shows ngl. But City of Ghosts is definitely the most obscure on this list. If you want the slice of life of Craig of The Creek or Hilda without the action and story driven plot, then this is the show for you. This is literally just some kids interviewing cute ghosts in LA. Its adorable and chill, a breath of fresh air if i’m being honest. Its what I would call The Lofi of cartoons right now.
If you love musicals, slapstick and just goofyness in general, then you’ll fall into the never escaping pit of Centaurworld. A war horse gets zapped into a world of singing Centaurs and she has to travel with a herd to find her rider, the only family she has left. If you can get passed some unhinged chaos, then you’ll fall into this show easily. This is also on Netflix 😭
Jellystone is just a wacky show with wacky characters, nothing more nothing less! Its has spectacular comedy and even if you have no idea who the Jellystone characters are, its still really fun. I would give a plot synopsis but its really just Jellystone characters being Jellystone characters. You can watch this on HboMax
I feel like Over The Garden Wall is getting more obscurer as the years go by, its pretty well known but just in case whoever reading this doesn’t know what Over The Garden Wall is- its about two boys who get lost in the woods of the Unknown and are trying to get back home. If you love series like Infinity Train and want something to watch this Halloween season then this is perfect! You can watch this on HboMax
And last but not least, Glitchtechs!! Its an action packed show of superheroes with a videogame touch, while videogame premises come off as forced in most shows this show shows real passion in it and it very rarely comes off as dated or forced. The animation is downright gorgeous, no exaggeration. The music is also just candy to the ears. I recommend this to anybody who’s looking for something new to watch. You can watch this on Netflix!

show suggestions for owl house fans during the hiatus
1. tangled the series
where to watch?: disney+
how long?: a movie + 3 seasons
summary: rapunzel is adjusting to life as a princess, but when she sneaks out beyond the kingdom walls alongside her best friend cassandra, she touches magical black rocks that cause her hair to grow back and she embarks on a journey to learn about the mysteries of the black rocks and her hair.
this was actually a tts blog for a while during the time the show was airing, so of course i’ll recommend it!! it’s truly a beautiful show with stunning animation, interesting lore that expands on the original movie, lovable characters, and incredible music.
2. rwby
where to watch?: rooster teeth
how long?: 4 original character shorts + 8 seasons/volumes (9th volume coming later this year)
summary: ruby rose, weiss schnee, blake belladonna, and yang xiao long attend beacon academy, a school where they train to be huntresses and protect their world from monsters called the grimm.
again, as a current rwby blog, i’m gonna recommend it!! please note that it’s not a kid’s cartoon, so it can get dark and heavy with some of the violence, but it’s not inappropriate in any way. there are so many characters and ships to love, plenty of complex storylines to follow, absolutely banger musical soundtracks, and a very unique 3d animation style (it gets better after v3, i promise).
3. kipo & the age of wonderbeasts
where to watch?: netflix
how long?: 3 seasons
summary: after being forced to flee the burrow that she’s known all her life, kipo oak searches for her father on the surface of a post-apocalyptic world full of giant, talking, mutated animals.
kipo is such a beautiful but underrated show!! it’s been praised for its lgbt+ and poc representation, and is the first kid’s cartoon to ever have a character verbally come out as gay!! i saw someone describe it as a mix between spop, amphibia, and toh and that’s actually a perfect description for it. it has stunning animation, great music, lots of great rep, and a really cool plot premise.
4. amphibia
where to watch?: disney+
how long?: 2 seasons (season 3 premiering in october)
summary: when anne boonchuy and her friends open a magical box, she’s transported to the world of amphibia, where she meets friends and foes while trying to find her friends and a way back home.
i just finished watching this show and it was so cute!! it does get pretty dark towards the end of season 2, but a lot of it is fun frog adventures with plot buildup. the animation is great and a lot of toh fans are also amphibia fans!!
5. gravity falls
where to watch?: disney+
how long?: 2 seasons
summary: when twins dipper and mabel pines spend the summer in gravity falls, oregon, with their great uncle stan, dipper discovers a strange journal and together, they start to uncover mysteries about the town.
most owl house fans are probably familiar with gravity falls, but i thought i’d recommend it anyways!! dana terrace (the creator of toh) worked on this show and the creator, alex hirsch, is her boyfriend and is also involved with the owl house (voice of king, hooty, etc.). it’s such a fun and heartfelt show and is definitely similar to the owl house, but unique in its own way!!

KIPO and the Age of Wonderbeasts is AMAZING and why more people should be talking about it!!
I know this isn’t my main for animated series BUT I just watched KIPO and let me tell you it’s so good??? It’s not netflix but for some reason there’s been NO promo at all so i’m changing that!!
ALL main characters are poc (or a bug or a pig)
Kipo is half asian half black (and purple but that’s just an extra bonus imo), Wolf is black and Benson is brown/black/of unknown heritage (as far as I know)
Also???
Benson is gay and he just straight up SAYS so
Like, “Ya I’m gay” no hinting, no stereotypes no beating around the bush, he’s just gay that’s it and the entire scene is super natural?
It has giant megadogs
And they’re super cute. So many mutes are super cute
Wolf’s backstory and connected character arc are AMAZING and she has so much more room for growth
Like, I don’t want to spoil anything but this four feet tall girl has issues BUT She’s not just a “though as nails” archetype, she’s a real person who’s carrying a really difficult past with her and her whole character journey is so satisfying!!
There’s like a hundred more reasons like singing woodcutter cats and lesbian rock and roll snakes and nerd wolves that make musicals titled “everything we know about the universe so far” but you’ll just have to see that for yourself!! Please watch this show it deserves more attention and a second season!

Some stuff from 2020 that I actually liked
Okay, so 2020 was a godawful year, we all agree. But a lot of good did happen to keep us sane, so I want to go ahead and list everything that made me happy last year. Also, note that some of these things actually debuted earlier than 2020, but I came across it in 2020, so it counts for me.
TV!
-The Hollow.
The Hollow is a truly underappreciated show. A cool premise and interesting characters that just got better every episode.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
This is one of the best single-season shows I’ve ever seen. Absolutely brilliant, and fuck you Netflix for pulling the plug!
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
This show is not my thing by any means, and I would never have checked it out if the opening wasn’t so attention-grabbing. Glad I did, because it gave me genuine joy. Though it probably should have debuted later in the year, since it seems custom-made for the quarantine months.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Season 5
What more can I say? One of my favorite shows of all time going out with a fantastic bang. God, I love this show.
Honorable mentions: Kipo and the Age of the Wunderbeasts, The Owl House, Magia Record, and SSSS Gridman.
MOVIES
There wasn’t a lot of movies worth talking about this year, and fewer that I actually saw. This one had the good fortune to drop just in time to dominate the box office right before quarintine shut everything down. And for a film with such an uninspired premise, such a problematic production, and being a video game movie no less, it just brought me so much joy.
VIDEO GAMES
Stinkoman 20x6: Level 10
Homestar Runner was my first favorite thing on the internet, and I spent many hours playing through Stinkoman 20x6 well over a decade ago. So when they finally announced the final level mere days before flash died forever, it was a big of closure I never thought I would get.
A Hat in Time
This game was a surreal delight. More like this, please!
Hollow Knight
On the other end of the spectrum, good lord was exploring the world of Hollownest a joy. Can’t wait for Silksong!
Honorable mention: Orri and the Blind Forest
PRO WRESTLING
Tetsuya Naito achieves his Destino
I’ve already got into detail why this moment was so special, so I won’t repeat myself here. But man, was it incredible.
Kota Ibushi, back-to-back G1 winner!
If it were anyone else, I would be annoyed. But it’s Kota.
I started watching Lucha Underground!
This show is years old, but I only started watching it this year, and I’m glad that I did, because it is so much fun. It’s basically Mortal Kombat as a wrestling show!
Honorable mentions: the Firefly Funhouse match, Roman Reigns turning heel, Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley’s AEW championship wins
LITERATURE
Two Dresden Books
The Dresden Files is my favorite book series, and after waiting so long for it to return, getting two books in the same year was a real treat
Dance in the Vampire Bund
This is probably my guiltiest of guilty pleasures, because unlike other guilty pleasures like To Love-Ru or the Hollywood Undead in which their unashamed schlockiness is part of the charm DitVB is largely a fantastic vampire story with a richly drawn world, great characters, a compelling plot, and some truly great action. It just has that one really gross aspect that overshadows everything else, and unfortunately is promoted as its main selling point. That being said, I was happy to see it return.
PERSONAL WRITING
Returning to fanfiction
Ah, IM and RD, how I’ve missed thee. Sure, my heyday may be over, but it’s still wonderful to return to old stories
Finishing both Walpurgis Nights and Restless
These two were both passion projects that have been taking up space in my head for years, so finishing both was a dream come true, no pun intended
Getting Blood Island going
I have no idea how my future in original fiction will go, but I hope it’s good.
MUSIC
DemonDice
Yes, we all know who she is now, but finding Calliope’s older stuff kind of makes me mad about how unappreciated she was.
Mystery Skulls - Ultra Rare vol. 2
I remember asking Mystery Skulls right after vol 1 dropped if a vol 2 was in the worlds, and he said definitely. It took a while, but it’s finally here.
Skyhill returns
God, Howling at the Moon came when I needed it the most.
K/DA All Out
I found out that this was coming out literally days before it dropped, and it ROCKED!
Ken Ashcorp
Why yes, I would like more incredibly catchy, shamelessly horny songs about nerdy stuff that I like, thank you very much.
Honorable Mentions: Hybrid Theory deluxe edition, In This Moment, Gorillaz Song Machine
Misc.
hololive
This is the era of the Vtuber. I still don’t fully understand why these cute but psycho anime girls bring me so much joy, but I’m glad that they do.
And finally...
Donald Trump gets voted out of office.
Fuck you, you narcissistic, fascist piece of shit. You losing didn’t make up for such an awful year or for the four years in which you ran this country into the ground, but it was a good start!

Aww that’s okay; if anything I’m sorry that a show and fandom that used to be enjoyable on the majority have turned into something exhausting and even triggering for a lot of people. What kind of shows are you into at this moment? I’ve seen a lot of people get interested in Danny Phantom lately (the full series is up on Hulu and apparently the season 2 finale anniversary is next week) but I’d love to hear what you personally like these days.
Hope you don't mind me taking the chance to place some recs! For these are really good and can use more attention.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
A Dreameorks cartoon on Netflix now confirmed for a 2nd season! Its a colorful post apocalypse world where most humans went underground and animals mutated and evolved to rule it. It has a very Ghibli vibe to it in feel, especially falling animation. Of the humans that are our leads, all three are poc, two African Americans and Kipo is African-Asian (possibly Korean with her naming a pig Mandu). Also has an openly gay character, making it another in the DW roster to include LGBT characters.
Glitch Techs
Sadly canceled the first few months out, too expensive for Nick's taste which is a shame since Glitch Techs is one of the most fun cartoons I've seen in a while, and the animation is so fluid. Its a true love letter to gaming, so many references that gamers of all kind can pick up, and has a very diverse cast, with both leads are biracial (Five is Chinese-Hispanic and Miko is Japanese American). This is also one of those shows that fo siblings right. While cancelled, there are some unreleased eps, hopefully more views can help get the rest of s1, and maybe Nick will fo more with it.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This has become my favorite adaptation of TMNT made thus far. It has a new fresh spin on characters and set up, fluid animation with small details that you can catch later with a rewatch, really funny and the turtles feel like teenagers and siblings, a very flawed and human Splinter, and April is black in this one and is easily my favorite version of her. Its wholesome, funny, action packed; those in Canada can watch it on Netflix. It is a different take on TMNT, but to me its refreshing and thry are changes I like a lot.
Amphibia
One of two Disney cartoons I've been liking. About a Thai American girl teleported to Amphibia, a world of anthromorphic amphibians. Very wholesome, colorful, and funny. It has some Gravity Falls vibes, though the mystety is more background and its more family focused.
The Owl House
2nd Disney cartoon, a spiritual successor of GF, of sorts. It matches GF in weird and dark tones and designs. And its a fascinating world to see. Luz is full of life and I'm rooting for her to succeed in becoming a witch, Eda is a literal hoot and has a lot of mysteries to her, and King is adorable. I am curious to see if there is something more to him as a lot of fans theorize.
Now this is where we move to rewatch list. Gradually rewatching Spop with my brother (his first viewing) and its been golden. Also been rewatching Inuyasha and AtLA.
For new shows (for me) is checking out Card Captor Sakura for the first time (very cute), and the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime, which has been a lot of fun so far. I will also be checking out s2 of 3Below sometime but, honestly not too excited do its been the back of my list.
And those are all the shows I'm into atm.
I got some fic ideas for AtLA and Trollhunters, here's hoping I can get them going.

Things I binged recently:
(Still coping with grief and depression, and one of the ways I tend to do that is just to distract myself from it all with Netflix. Here are some things I watched or tried watching. And my thoughts on them.)
The Office: Hated this show. Which was a shame because I really really enjoyed Parks and Rec, and these shows are supposed to be similar in style. Unfortunately this show is cynical, mean, and pessimistic. Characters get away with being outright racist, sexist, and antagonistic. Are unapologetic about their hurtful actions, and it sickens me. I was told season one was bad, and to watch season two, and I did. And even season two was awful. And I shouldn’t have to slog through three seasons of a show before it gets to a point where it’s like-able and good. If it takes you three seasons to figure it out, then no thanks. That’s a lot of show I have to suffer through before I MIGHT get to something I enjoy. I loved Parks and Rec because the characters loved and cared about each other, had genuine friendships, aspirations, and optimism. They strived to better the world around them, despite many mishaps and obstacles along the way. Parks and Rec was uplifting and sincere, where The Office is cynical and mean. 1/10.
A Whisker Away: Good, although I found the romance between the main character and her crush to be insincere and weak. I think the message of love would have been stronger if the best friend ended up being the one going to rescue her in the end. It never felt like the boy actually had feelings for her, just a begrudging respect and budding friendship. And it felt like his feelings were guilted and coerced by her actions to run away in the end. Like, “shit, I messed up and she ran away from home. Better tell her I love her, so she comes back home.” I understand that wasn’t what they were trying to do in this film, but it’s how the relationship came across. Manipulative. Especially since most of it was one sided, with her spying on his life as a cat. The love someone has for a pet does not equate romantic affection. Excellent movie for the heavy themes, Magic, and story, just think the overall message and relationships should have been overhauled, and worked around. I think the love the main character’s best friend had for her was more pure and powerful that the one-sided obsessive crush she had on the boy. 6/10.
Brand New Animal: Great show. Both my husband and I loved it. And were gushing about it even after we finished it. My only critique is all the heavy handed exposition. It felt clunky, ham-handed, and unnatural. I think with a few more episodes to the show they might have been able to parse out that exposition and find more natural ways to feed the audience that information, rather than huge unsolicited info dumps on the Main Character. Especially since half the time she didn’t earn that info, didn’t need it, didn’t ask, and just plain shouldn’t have been told some of it. Like why would you just spit classified secret information out to a character you know can’t keep secrets, or even follow directions?? Aside from that, solid characters, solid friendships, cute story, lots of interesting events, and just a blast from start to finish. Would highly recommend it to anyone. If you like Zootopia or Beastars, you’ll probably enjoy this too. 8/10.
Japan Sinks 2020: I. LOVED. THIS. SHOW. Omg, it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I just couldn’t stop watching. It’s in the disaster movie genre. Like Volcano, Dante’s Peak, or The Day After Tomorrow. That “what if this catastrophic natural disaster occurred,” and you follow this group of survivors as they work together to stay alive. And damnit if I wasn’t emotionally invested in every single one of them. I wanted to see them survive, and see how they made it through. I wasn’t sure if I was gonna be able to connect as strongly with their struggle given that it was animated rather than live action. But that didn’t matter at all. The tone is serious, and everything is given the weight and consideration it deserves. The animation style has a realistic tone to it, and the fact that it was an anime never got in the way of the journey and the emotions and the intensity for a second. I felt ALL of it. 10/10.
Unsolved Mysteries Netflix (documentary): I’m a slut for documentaries, all kinds of documentaries. So it’s no surprise I watched this. If you like unsatisfying true stories then this is it. A whole season of unsolved crimes. You get all the information wrapped up and handed to you in a neat little interesting package, and are left to just gnaw on it wondering who did it, and if they’ll ever solve it. One of the episodes isn’t a crime though, it’s a UFO story, which was a weird change of pace and tone from the rest of the season. Still creepy, but in a different way. I liked it, but it can be frustrating when you want answers. It gets an 7/10 because I wanted answers.
Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts: I could watch this show over and over again. My husband and I were foaming at the mouth waiting for season 2, and when it finally released, we gobbled it up and then watched it again right after. Excellent show. Post-Apocalyptic story, where the surface of the earth is overrun with mutant animals, and humans are living underground in “burrows.” The main character Kipo gets separated from her people and stranded on the surface, and has to find a way home. Along the way she makes some human friends, and mutant friends, and connects with people through music. And even learns some deep dark secrets about her Mom and Dad, and even herself. It’s a beautiful story emotionally, but also an exciting adventure. I love it. 10/10.
Eurovision, the Story of Fire Saga: Good. Which is saying something because I’m not a fan of Will Ferrell and he plays one of the main characters in this movie. I enjoyed the movie, and it made me laugh. Which was another surprise because I’m a cold-hearted bitch when it comes to comedy, and most things don’t make me laugh. So when a comedy works for me it’s a surprise. And this comedy worked in places. Not ALL places, but it did get some chuckles and a laugh or two. And I did enjoy the story it told. The movie is about two friends who are musicians/singers that enter singing/performance contest, and the drama that ensues along the way. It’s a cute underdog story. 6/10.
Floor is Lava (game show): The name of the game says it all. Groups of three contestants must navigate rooms using only furniture, and chandeliers, and shit. They can’t touch the floor because the room is flooded with hot orange koolaid. And if they fall in they “die.” Prepare to watch grown ass adults hop, hobble, and flop over furniture, tables, and other obstacles, as they try to get from one side of a room to the other side without falling into the koolaid. It’s exciting, and fun, and although the commentary is awful, the struggle of the contestants more than makes up for it. 8/10.
Splice: Never seen this movie before. Thought I’d give it a try since it just showed up on Netflix. It’s... odd. I’m having a hard time deciding if I loved or hated it. It’s an interesting look into what could happen should we start experimenting with human DNA and other sentient life. And how that could go all kinds of wrong very quickly. I like horror, and this delivered on some of the horror elements, but mostly it just jabs you over and over again with moral dilemmas. And you end up feeling like all the characters in the movie majorly failed each other, and they were all the bad guys. I’ll give it a 5/10 because I’m conflicted whether I liked it or not. But it was worth seeing once.
Ju-on Origins: I’ve seen a couple of the Grudge movies, which is the Americanized version of this horror franchise. But I’ve never seen any of the Ju-on movies. So it was a new experience watching this. It’s non-linear storytelling can be challenging to follow, but the stories it’s telling are fascinating and unnerving. I had to watch it with the shitty English dub because my attention span is too short for subtitles. And this wasn’t just a single movie, it’s a show with an entire first season. Episode 4 was definitely where shit hit the fan, and things got really scary. But I like slow burn horror, so I enjoyed the build up of the previous three episodes, and how they just carefully built on the apprehension and dread until things really got scary in the fourth episode. After that the rest of the show is just a roller coaster of highs and lulls, that leave you wondering where the series is gonna go in season 2. Definitely my favorite installment in the Grudge/Ju-on franchise that I’ve seen so far. And it’s got me curious to check out the other Ju-on movies. 8/10.
The Girl with all the Gifts: I’m a sucker for zombie movies and this was a unique and refreshing take on them. The idea is that the zombie outbreak is caused by a strain of the Cordyceps fungus that ends up infecting humans. And the surviving humans are using children born from infected mothers to try and find a cure for the outbreak. The children are like this functioning hybrid of fungus and human, and not completely lost like the humans who were directly infected. The movie explores the moral dilemma of how the children are treated, and the further of humans. I enjoyed the movie, and the concepts. It was a great addition to the zombie franchise. Would recommend. 7/10.
Abducted in Plain Sight (documentary): another crime documentary. This one dealt with a kidnapper/pedophile who managed to kidnap the same girl twice, and the lasting trauma his actions had on that girl. It was sad, and heartbreaking, and horrifying. If you like crime documentaries and have a steely stomach, check this one out. I won’t give it a rating because it deals with real life stuff and children and it’s not a show.
Evil Genius (documentary): one last documentary on this list. I was on a crime documentary spree. Usually I like animal documentaries. This one was about a couple who masterminded a bank heist by attaching a collar bomb to a man and sending him on a wild goose chase scavenger hunt. There’s also a case about a corpse in a freezer, and how the two cases are connected. It’s absolutely bonkers. Just wow. It’s four episodes long, a mini-series, but just an interesting experience. I mostly watched/listened to this while slowly chipping away at a commission. If you like crime documentaries it’s worth a watch. I give this one a 6/10 because I won’t be watching it a second time, but also because I think the format and how they explained everything was kinda long winded.

I’ve just finished watching Kipo and the Age of GIVE ME SECOND SEASON NAO.
Seriously, I am desperate to see it now, no matter how many laws of time and space would I have to break. Because Kipo is an amazing show. Is it the best one out there? No.
...
But it’s damn close.
Spoilers below. Also, quick summary: GO AN WATCH KIPO. IT’S NOT LIKE WE’RE ALL HIDDEN IN OUR OWN BURROWS RIGHT NOW WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO.
Kipo and the age of the Wonderbeasts follows the adventures of Kipo, a young, adventurous nerd girl, who finds herself out of the comfort of her Burrow, thrown into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, ridden with mutants (”mutes”) and tons of both wonderful and horrifying things.
On her way, as she tries to find her father and the way back to her Burrow, she befriends two people who have lived their life above the ground, as well as several mutes, learning valuable lessons, and a thing or two about herself.
And quite literally, everything about this concept is fantastic and fits perfectly with the old scheme of a travel-adventure-based cartoon. The usage of modern, yet post-apocalyptic world creates a perfect setup of both the known and the unknown. This is strengthened by the usage of various, jarring styles of music, wild, vibrant colours, as well as complete mish-mash of colourful and imaginative concepts.
Of course, the animation by the legendary studio Mir helps bringing this great story to life. We have enormous dogs and bunnies, disco rave bugs, mafia frogs, rat theme parks, lumberjack cats... the world building in Kipo is phenomenal, and at no point you ever question what is happening.
Secondly, like in all great stories, the characters complement each other. Kipo is friendly and opens up to others, Wolf is nothing but secretive and distrustful, and the duo of Benson and Dave lie somewhere in the middle of the selfish-selfless scale, keeping it to themselves, at least at the start.
What strikes me is how naturally the story and typical cartoon lessons and morals flowed in Kipo. All of them are sensible effects of Kipo’s adventures in the mute world. Almost nothing feels forced, and I had to actually ration myself watching this show with an episode a day, since I didn’t want to gobble it all at once. It is that good.
Curiously enough, with the pacing of the season, I didn’t even feel the short length of it. I usually complain about short cartoon seasons nowadays, which is a scourge brought by the Netflix-style binging, but since every episode had a mix of filler-style world-building and plot, it felt naturally. I will always say that Avatar the Last Airbender have set up a golden, shining standard for that type of stories, and I felt here at home. And that is a huge compliment.
And as usual, there is a much bigger and darker storyline underneath Kipo’s journey: her half-mute body, her father’s curious connection to the mandrill antagonist, Scarlamagne, who wants to enslave humans, and the story of her dead mother.
And season 1 stops right there! We desperately need more of it!
I was fascinated by the character of Lio, Kipo’s father, who is an astronomer.
It’s such a poetic concept: even after the apocalypse, when humanity is forced to hide underground, we still look at the stars to find knowledge and inspiration, even if we have to draw them on the ceiling of our safety bunkers.
The soundtrack of this show is eclectic and diverse, reflecting the post-apocalyptic scavenging lifestyle, where you get what you find. Even though I’m not a fan of any genres of music in this show, every single track SLAPS, and it fits perfectly the scenes, usually fast-paced ones.
So, are there any problems? Well...
Kipo’s journey to find her father felt a little bit too video-game-quest-ish to me, with maps and all. This was the only thing that didn’t flow naturally to me. But at the same time, this can be explained by many issues that were, well, not explained: Kipo’s father curious connection to the overworld, which also involves Kipo’s heritage and her mother’s identity, as well as Lio’s disagreement with the chief of their Burrow-wait a minute.
This is Fallout 3: you escape your vault, you have to find your dad, a scientist, who had a disagreement with the Overseer, who then escaped to another vault and was involved in a project outside, and then you find that you and your mother were born in the wasteland.
They even referenced the Fallout universe once:
What a ripoff! No amount of cute four-eyed pigs will save it.... I joke of course, but the parallels here are curious, you have to admit. And honestly, to me it made it even better.
Because Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts is a phenomenal piece of animation. I waited WAAAAY to long to see it, and I would never forgive myself. I could have been screaming about season 2 three months ago!
Kipo teaches us all valuable lessons about survival, trust, and friendship. And of course, she gives the best tip for all RPG fans out there:
Before attacking an opponent, try petting it.
You might find a new way to overcome your problems.

something you’re worried about, your favourite memory, and any tv shows/movie recommendations! (sorry if that's a lot!!)
something youre worried about:
(no spoilers and also please do not give me spoilers) i’m worried that the last of us 2 is going to fucking destroy me body and soul. we’re only 3 hours in but Oh Boy. OH BOY. like this is the sort of poignant writing i aspire to but also GUYS??? GUYS ?????
favorite memory:
answered here!
tv shows/movies:
i mean i know everyones watching avatar rn but watch avatar. that one is a given
watch kipo!!! its on netflix!!! its hilarious and poignant and wonderful and they just dropped season 2. cute cartoon, good style, lots of humor, GREAT worldbuilding even when you are like “what the fuck is going on”, lots of trope subversions, awesome fight scenes, but also just absolutely sweet and heartbreaking
one of my go to comfort movies is unicorn store, starring and directed by brie larson. i didn’t think i would love it so much but its just so comforting to watch, for a “realistic” movie its very stylized, almost satirical in the directing, but really funny and charming and nice. i dont know if its “canon” but kit is SUCH a good autistic female character. and virgil is like. the only good man i love him
completely different from both of those things, and not technically a movie, but go watch the last of us movie cut and then come cry with me as i subject myself to this experience once again for some reason *sobs*

Please give Kipo a try, netflix has a history of surpressing POC and LGBT lead shows, and if we want more programming like this, we’ve got to support it! watch it (legally if you can, so it can get direct viewer support), tweet about it, rate it on netflix! its a show with big lumberjack cats in flannel shirts like what more could yall want

1, 4, 10, 18, 30 ☺️
1) Favorite TV series you’ve started
I really liked Kipo: Age of the Wonderbeasts (it’s on Netlifx). I plan to start Altered Carbon season 2 at some point too. I also rewatched and finally finished Gravity Falls, which is a really cute show with great layers (Hulu)
4) Netlifx, YouTube, or TV?
I like Netflix and other streaming services, but I occasionally go onto YouTube. I used to watch people pretty consistently, but I kind of fell out of the habit while in college due to other commitments. I may get back into it at some point 🤷🏼♂️
10) Are you missing any events you were looking forward to?
Not too many bc I recently had to pay some medical bills and I’m building a PC, so I’ve been trying to save money 😅 A friend’s b-day party was postponed tho and I had to miss another friend’s party during the initial stages due to work restrictions. I miss going to the pool tho because I had just started to get a more consistent schedule 😢
18) Fave quarantine meme?
I love all of the Animal Crossing memes tbh. I’ve seen some great tik toks, specifically a parody of a avatar the last air bender
30) If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Lol tbh anywhere that isn’t New York. I’m not in the city, but it’s still scary here. Maybe my parents house to be with my cats and family? I’m alone in my apartment, which is nice, but lonely. Somewhere abroad with better treatment and control options than the US sounds nice too 😅
Thanks for the ask! 😊
