The Raven Witch: Chapter 8
Read on AO3 First Chapter, Second Chapter, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7
Dear Eda,  I know you will have many questions but I have to do this. I can't fight you. Even if I did we both know who would win.
A knock on the door interrupted Eda's reading. She looked at the decades-old note that she found on her bed. She carefully folded and put away the note. She never had understood Lily's reasoning. After all, it was Lily who wanted so desperately to join the Emperor's Coven.
"Come in," Eda called. The door to her room opened revealing a small black demon with a skull visible that held two horns one of which was broken.
"You wanted to see me?" King asked. Eda turned around and smiled at the demon. Her gold fang shone in the light.
"Yes, I have an important task for you. One that only you can do." Eda said. King puffed up eagerly.
"What is it?" King asked with barely contained excitement. Eda barely contained a laugh. She was glad that she found him on that island eight years ago.
"It's my sister. She needs to join the Emperor's Coven but she continues to live in isolation not allowing me to talk to her. I need you to gather information on her. Perhaps take care of what is preventing her from joining the Emperor's Coven." Eda explained
"I won't let you down," King said. Eda walked forward and patted King's head.
"I know you won't," Eda said. King eagerly left the room.
~~~
King wasn't sure how he was supposed to get close to Lilith Clawthorne. The entire time he has been scouting her house he never once saw her. Though he did occasionally see her human. There was also the fact of the house demon. It was clearly very protective of the owner. The human seemed to be the weak link in Lilith's security system.
Now all King had to do was figure out how to approach her. The human seemed different than anyone else in the Emperor's Coven. Perhaps it was a human thing.
The human seemed to be hanging out with her witch friends. Now King just needs to figure out how to approach her.
"Hey what's this?" The human asked. She somehow managed to get behind him it seemed. Something then picked him up. He was spun around and faced the Human's witch friends. The male witch shrugged and the female witch looked confused.
"Uhm...Luz." The girl witch started.
"Maybe it's a dog and the thing around its neck is its collar." The boy witch said eagerly. King was about to protest but then an idea formed. If he allowed the human to think he's a pet Lilith would have no reason to be suspicious of him. It would be way too easy to spy on her.
"Ooooo, I've always wanted a dog!" Luz exclaimed. She hugged the demon to her chest and King began to regret this plan.
"Do you think that Lilith will let you keep him?" The girl witch asked.
"Yeah she has a Hooty it's only fair that I get to have a dog. Isn't that right cutie pie." Luz said. She began to pet the little demon. King very much wanted to bite her for this but he needs her to get to Lilith.
The three teens rushed over to a house. There there was a horrifying owl face on the door.
"Ooooo, what you got there?" The owl demon sang. Luz held him out.
"A dog do you think that Lilith would let me keep him," Luz said eagerly.
"I don't know..." The owl demon thought. The house demon slithered around the human. King decided that he didn't like this demon.
"Well, then I'll just have to ask her," Luz said. She then walked into the house. "LILITH!"
"Are you dying or in trouble?" Lilith called out. She then walked into the living room.
King nearly did a double take. Lilith was the opposite of her sister in many ways. Her red curly hair was cut short with some greys. She wore large round glasses. Honestly, she looked more like a sleep-deprived teacher than a dangerous wild witch.
"Neither, can we keep him?" Luz said. She held out the demon towards the older witch. Lilith gave King a once over.
"What is he?" Lilith asked
"We don't know." The girl witch said. This caused Lilith to frown.
"Then how do you know it's not dangerous?" Lilith asked. Luz brought King down slightly.
"Uh...cause...he didn't attack us." Luz stuttered. Lilith's face palmed and sighed. Honestly, King agreed with the older witch. The human was pretty foolish.
"He could be buying his time to attack or could only attack under certain conditions or he could even be a baby waiting for its angry parent to tear us all apart." Lilith ranted.
"Well, I think this is our cue to leave," Willow said. The two teen witches quickly left.
"Does he really look that dangerous?" Luz questioned.
"Looks can be deceiving," Lilith said.
"Come on you got to keep Hooty." Luz defended. Hooty let out a noise of displeasure. Lilith sputtered.
"I didn't keep Hooty. He is my house demon and friend." Lilith defended. Hooty the house demon wrapped himself around the witch and nodded.
"I'm not anyone's pet." Hooty huffed
"Please Lilith I promise to take good care of him," Luz begged.
"I don't know," Lilith said. The human seemed to have done something to convince the witch. "Fine, you can keep him for now." Luz began to squeal. This caused both King and Lilith to cover their ears.
"Thank you, thank you..." Luz exclaimed. She rushed forward and hugged the witch. King was stuck between the two bodies.
"Yes, yes," Lilith muttered. She was clearly as uncomfortable as King was. "I already have the feeling I'm going to regret this."
"You won't," Luz promised.
Conversation
Eda: Guess whose rich in apple bloooddddd
Hooty: Welcome home. WE THINK LUZ MIGHT BE DEAD!
King: For the record I don't think she's dead.. I think she's the LIVING dead. There's a diffrence
Hooty: No ther eisn't
King: For the last time
Eda: Both of you quite we aren't having that debate again.. Zombies are both living AND dead. Let me take a look (goes into the kitchen where Luz still isn't exactly functioning after the kiss but at least got home and sat down. So that's something?)
Eda: Hmmm (Looks Luz over) Glazed eyes, something between a smile and utter shock.. (Smiles warmly) So the green one finally smooched you huh?
Luz: It's purple now.. and WAIT HOW DID YOU KNOW IT WAS AMITY.
Eda: Kid i've been around the block a few hundred times. I know what first love looks like. I still remember it fondly.. and kicking him in the shins when it didn't work out but story for another time. Point is neither of you are subtle.
King: I heard the news. Thank Dad i've been holding this in for weeks, ahem (Clears throat) Luz and Amity sitting in a tree, k-i-...something something.. your making out that's the general point. I'm not good with spelling.
Luz: (blushing heavily) DID EVERYONE KNOW?
Eda: Pretty much.
Hooty: I knew.
Eda: because Lilith told you
Hooty: Still counts!
Eda: So.. how are we feeling?
Luz: I do'nt know good, confused, confused and good? I liked it, I like her, but I just.. i've had crushes you know.. but I didn't think about what to DO once I got there. I always got turned down sometimes gently sometimes with a flaming bag of dog poop that says "Not a chance"
Eda: Yeesh been there... only it was also alive but not the point.
Luz: I just.. don't know wha ti'm doing and i'm worried if I wing it i'm just going to end up hurting her. I just.. don't want to screw up again.
Eda: Kid...
Luz: I know, I know what happened with you isn't all my fault.. but it dosen't change the fact it feels like it, or the fact my mom is out there missing me, or the fact I Nearly got you AND lilith hurt the other day simply because I didn't listen to you. I just worry i'll hurt her you know? I WANT this but I don't know if i'ts worth risking her.
Eda: Kid.. look.. love is ALWAYS going to hurt, even when it's good. Even when it's great. But it's always going to be worth it to at least try. To at least have been there.. just like everything else you've done. You came here because you wanted to be who you were always meant to, you destroyed the door to prevent some jerk from doing something that CLEARLY wasn't good, and you helped mom because you like to see the best in people. And she LOVES you because you saw the best in her. You made her better and she made you better. And that.. that's worth it even if it ends badly and I have to claw her eyes out to defend your honor. But your a good person and you deserve to be loved and if you got it, then go for it.
Luz:... (teary eyed, hugs Eda) Thanks
Eda: Any time kid
Tick tock, it's Lore O'Clock! Time (ha!) for Elsewhere and Elsewhen!
(I swear to the Titan I'm gonna try to make this shorter)
Ah, I see we're starting with a good old fashioned conspiracy board! Last time I saw one of those was during an 8 hour Victorious retrospective (you know the one)
And Luz continuing to be smart and studious
Don't be too hard on yourself, Luz, a door capable of interdimensional travel isn't exactly the sort of thing you get right the first time around
Ayyy it's Steve! He even has the shirt lmao
Ah, so it's a celebration of a new museum position! So much for a birthday
Lulu seems less than thrilled...
Hooty continues to be gross and upsetting. Wouldn't have him any other way♥
She must be Flora Desplora
Yup, I was right
Hmm, not getting into any trouble? The music cue tells me I should be uneasy about this, so I'm going to oblige
I don't think I like her, especially with what she did to that poor griffin :(
"I have questions about that name" LA;FKHJD;OSHFAP LUZ KNOWS LMFAOOOO
Lilith having yet another existential crisis
Also, that "Snorses" moment, besides being yet another Luz being cute moment, had real "Snadger" vibes
Well, that's one way of getting around changing the title card yet (probably ran short on time for the episode)
Ah, Philip has metioned the Collector👀
Eda gets it (I might not have mentioned my leg hair, but still)
Here we go, time for the time travel method in this show
People will probably pay more attention to "Lender Man," but I'm just amused that possums are considered a cryptid in the Boiling Isles
Time travel method mixed with fond childhood memories! Well done
I know balusters are supposed to be a prime example of a dry topic, but considering Demon Realm architecture, I think it could actually be genuinely interesting...
Luz is so encouraging to Lilith 😭😭 (I didn't actually mean to put two emoji there, but fuck it)
Thus, the adventure begins!
Everyone wanting more of nerdy Lilith is getting fed today
Oop, Luz found something magical! She's gonna put her face in it!
Side note: that's the exact same sound the pictures in Willow's mind made when entering those, too
Lilith telling her reflections "In your face!" 😂
"I shall revel mineself to death!" And he did, the end
Lmao Lilith tripped over her own head
"And yes, I am a crab maiden!" Flashbacks to The Time Traveler's Pig, anyone?
"Bloody fly effect" I once again have to mention how the wordplay in this show is top tier
It's so adorable how Luz genuinely thinks Lilith is cool despite how impossibly lame she acts
"I get to meet my Grandpa?!"
Tumblr media
Eda panicking juuust a little bit...
So that's where they got the hats
Also, I get the feeling that's more of Belos' propaganda talking through Lilith
Luz looking at Lilith like "I don't get it, but you're clearly having fun"
The man himself! Philip!
Oh, Eda's definitely gonna try to bounce to avoid seeing Dell
I would make a "cockblocking" joke here, but I'm above that😤
A terrible impersonation, but not inaccurate
Oh, we gonna have a fight?...Guess not
And Philip's a dick. I expected better from a 17th century English settler! /s
"Luzura and Dirtrude" loooool
...Luz totally cribbed that backstory from Good Witch Azura, didn't she?
So Philip also knows how to use glyphs...
"Almost as if the world wanted to hide them from me" Hmm....
Lilith seems suspicious...
That's quite an elaborate glyph combo
Yes, Eda, Gwen will surely be fooled by that
C'mon, Eda, she might have been duped by Wartlop, but that's just pathetic
Yo, there he is!
The way he talks, you can definitely tell running away is something she's done many times before, and it's goddamn heartbreaking💔
Head of the Titan, huh? A shortcut, indeed
I'm starting to get the impression our dear friend Philip is taking Luz and Lilith for a ride, and not in a fun way
"This feels uncomfortably familiar" Uh oh
Whatcha doing with that palisman, Phil?
Oh, you motherfucker
You slimy piece of shit
Oh, she's gonna scratch that thing in the place Lilith mentioned, isn't she?
YUP
Of course Luz could make a giant stone monster dinosaur thing cute
GET HIM LULU FUCK YEAH
That's what you get, you fuck
"Stay mad" Cool aunt indeed
And the smack on the way out lmao
Luz is so sweet and supportive of Lilith in this episode😭😭😭
Here comes the long-awaited heart to heart with dad
Wait, that was his tower all along?!
God, I already love Dell, what a sweet man
"Grandson" I need another moment
Wow, looks like Owl Beast Eda got more than just his eye...And the shaking...
She carved Owlbert with Dell I-
Tumblr media
I do hope we see more of Dell, he's the best
The exchanging of finger guns so great
Oh FUCK his arm
OH SHIT THOSE "PHILIP IS BELOS" PEOPLE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!
(The episode did hint at this heavily, but now it's outright confirmed, goddamn!)
And there's even the Belos voice mixing with Philip's!
Seems like he's concerned with more than just getting home...
Well, what a doozy that was! Plenty of lore and worldbuilding, plus the big reveal that most of the fandom totally guessed! That said, it's about the journey, not the destination, and the way this was told and built up was quite well done! Also, the interaction with Eda and Dell...I want more, dammit!
Now we know what kind of person Philip was/Belos is, and that he truly does not give a shit about anyone in this realm. And next week we're gonna have to see Hunter try once again to earn his approval, knowing full well he'll never get it...
This show continues to be great!
Boiling Rain
my finger slipped again oopsies idk if this is 100% in character but like what if eda kicked lilith out right away and ended up regretting it later
There was nothing worse than a knock on the door for Eda. Especially not in the middle of the night, during a boiling rain storm, when she was fresh out of magic, and she had a kid in the house, and there was no hooty noise to warn her beforehand. What was he up to?
Eda was still new at defending herself without her magic, but she knew her way around a bat, just ask that guy at the bar from her 20’s and his massive medical bill. Whatever she thought, laughing to herself, that jerk deserved it, no medical bill was larger than his ego. Bat in her left hand, doorknob in her right, she simultaneously swung the door open and raised the bat into a defensive position, ready to strike, that is until…
“Lily?”
What she saw before her definitely wasn’t her sister, but that was Lilith on her doorstep. Well kind of, Lilith collapsed in front of her, drenched in steaming water, clearly out of breath, nothing like the perfect prissy Lilith she knew, and what was she wearing? Where was her dress and cloak? Oh, Eda realized, that is her dress and cloak. The clothes were nearly melting off of her sister, riddled with holes. That couldn’t have made her injuries any less severe. Eda had been stuck in her fair share of boiling rain storms, even with the thick skin of the owl beast it had still taken her weeks to heal, she couldn’t even begin to fathom the state her sister was in.
“I’m sorry” came a hoarse whisper from the pile at her feet
“Lily oh my titan-” Eda dropped the bat and turned her head to yell up the stairs, hoping she was loud enough to wake her sleeping apprentice “LUZ, WAKE UP” Her head snapped back to the door frame at the movement of Lilith flinching at her loud voice. What happened to her.
Eda bent down to at least try to get an idea of the injuries her sister had suffered, but before she could get her hands on Lilith, Luz appeared at the base of the stairs. “What’s going on?” she asked, clearly still half asleep. “I need you to go up to the bathroom and grab the first aid kit, not the one in the first aid kit box, the one in the lunchbox.” Eda instructed.
Luz went to move up the stairs but suddenly snapped awake, “Is that Lilith?”
“Luz, later, first aid kit now, please” Eda responded, back turned to the now fully attentive teenager
“Got it…” Luz ran up the stairs, “...the blue or the purple one?” she shouted
Eda sighed, now that Luz was going to be here a while she should make a point to show the kid the ropes around the house “The purple one please.”
Not even a half minute later Eda had the box in her hand and was sorting through the bandages, what was she doing, she didn’t even know how badly wounded Lilith was. Eda set the supplies down and moved to touch Lilith when a pale, terribly blistered hand shot out of the mound in front of her and grabbed her wrist.
“No.”
Eda was confused and jerked her hand away “What do you mean no?”
Lilith took a couple ragged breaths before weakly responding “I don’t want your help, I don’t deserve it”
They sat there in silence for a moment before Eda remembered Luz was still behind her, “Luz, sweetie, could you go grab some blankets and maybe draw up some of those healing glyphs you’ve been working on?”
“Sure” the girl replied softly before quietly stepping back up the stairs
“Edalyn I sai-” Lilith started
“I heard you. I don’t want to hear it. You need help.”
“Not your help-” Lilith inhaled painfully “not after everything I did to you.”
“Oh for titan’s sake Lily, you think just because you made a mistake I’m going to let you lay here in pain? I haven’t even seen your face yet and I can tell you need help, mine or not.”
“No, I shouldn’t have come here, it’s all my fault, I’ll go.” Lilith moved to get up, but the burns weren’t having it and she barely got a push-up’s distance off the ground before her arms gave out.
“Are you kidding me right now? You come to my door in the middle of the night, after having gone through titan-knows-what, covered in burns, your clothes are barely intact, and you expect me to just let you leave?”
Eda wasn’t having any more of it, and reached out and grabbed Lilith’s arm, who hissed in a combination of pain and protest.
“Not on my watch sister” Eda spoke through her teeth. For someone so frail, Lilith was definitely a bit heavier than she looked, though the fact she was drenched probably didn’t help.
She managed to drag the complaining witch all the way to the couch before Luz made her way down the stairs, blankets and a stack of healing glyphs in hand.
“Kid, drop those and come help me please.”
Together they were able to get Lilith into a lying position on the couch, and for the first time see how bad of a state Lilith was in. Not an inch of the witch’s skin was spared from the rains, red blotches and boils acted like massive freckles over her whole body. While taking in the sight of her sister, Eda managed to meet the injured witch’s eyes for a split second, and what she saw scared her more than anything. Of course Lilith’s face was contorted in pain, but there was also shame and embarrassment in her eyes. If I showed up in her state I’d be embarrassed too, but did she really think I wasn’t going to help her?
“Kid can you go upstairs and grab Lilith some clothes from my dresser? Anything you think will fit her is fine, and…” Eda leaned in next to Luz’s ear and in a low whisper “could you take your time? I’d like to talk to my sister in private”
Luz looked at her with understanding “Of course, if you need anything just yell up the stairs.” She eyed Lilith one more time before retreating back up the stairs.
Eda then turned back to Lilith, who seemed unwilling to meet her eye again. “Alright. Let’s get started, you look a mess, so this might hurt a lot more than a little.”
“Edalyn why are you doing this”
Eda chuckled “Have you seen yourself, I’ve never been the best at responsibility, but I think it would make me a bad person to not help someone in your condition.”
“No Eda, I mean why after everything that I did to you, to Luz, why are you still helping me when I am the last person you should want to help, I don’t understand.”
There was a heavy silence followed by a long exhale from Eda. She didn’t respond, instead moving for the pile of glyphs that Luz had left them. “This is going to hurt a lot, and I’m not going to be able to get it all without my magic, the glyphs only do so much, but I think I can make the worst of it at least better.”
For the second time that night Eda was stopped from touching Lilith by a pale shaking hand.
“Edalyn, why?”
“Ok here’s a deal, you let me help you and I’ll tell you why in the end? Sounds fair enough?”
“You really aren’t going to budge on this are you.”
“Nope.” Eda replied, popping her lips on the last syllable.
Lilith flopped back onto her back, shutting her eyes and exclaiming at the, without a doubt, excruciating pain the impact with the couch had caused.
“Real smooth Lils”
“Oh shut it.”
Somehow the older witch’s face turned even more red through the burns and boils.
Eda managed to get through placing glyphs along Lilith’s arms and legs with minimal issue, Lilith didn’t seem to be enjoying herself very much, but even she had to admit it was starting to look better. At some point Luz had come back down with a cream colored shirt and black patchwork skirt for Lilith to change into along with some more glyphs. Eda had sent her back to bed, the kid did have school in a few hours.
“Ok, we are going to have to take off your dress so I can reach your back, looks like that’s where most of the damage is, and…” as Lilith sat up Eda caught a glimpse of her full back “there also doesn’t seem to be all that much dress left to remove. You really got caught in the rain huh?”
Lilith didn’t respond, but instead met Eda’s eyes again, which made Eda suspicious.
“Do we have to?”
“Yes Lilith we have to treat your injuries.” Eda rolled her eyes at her sister, what did she expect when she was out in the rain without protection?
Lilith didn’t look amused, instead she seemed to pale out. She pulled down the top half of her dress and rolled over onto her stomach.
Eda gasped.
Lilith’s back was covered in burns and boils sure, but what shocked Eda was the array of scratches and claw marks all over Lilith’s back, not only her back but they seemed to go up and down her whole body in varying degrees. Some of them looked healed, or on the way there, some of them fresh, some of them even seemed to be infected.
“What the hell Li-”
Was all she got out before she was interrupted
“Forest demons aren’t as nice as they seem. Ever.”
Oh. Eda snapped her mouth shut and silently applied as many glyphs as she could to Lilith’s back and upper arms as she could. Of course, Eda thought, I didn’t let her stay here, she’s got no friends outside the coven, she doesn’t look different enough to find somewhere safe from the coven guard in town, especially not with her posters lining the alleyways, she’s been sleeping in the woods. Where else would she have gone. With their mother? Any number of nights in the forest without a roof was better than one night under their mom’s.
“Thank you.” a voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Huh? Oh.” Eda had been so busy thinking that she didn’t realize she had finished. “I’ll go to the kitchen to make us some tea, you can change in here, don’t worry about hooty he seems to be asleep.”
Lilith nodded and Eda made her way to the kitchen. Once the water was on the stove, she dove back into her thoughts. All these nights? I kicked her to the curb the night of the incident, it’s been at least a week, it’s rained almost every night. Oh titan, not all of those burns were fresh, that’s probably why Lilith was able to move at all, she was used to it. How has she been eating, bathing, sleeping? She’d been weakened by the splitting of the curse, could she have even defended herself? She could have come around any time- wait. Eda realized that she had told Lilith not to come anywhere near the house… ever again. That’s why she was so convinced she wouldn’t get help at the owl house. Maybe if I had been less harsh, it I hadn-
The whistle of the water being ready pulled Eda back to reality. She quickly placed the tea bags into the mugs and filled them with water and left the kitchen. When she got back to the living room, Lilith was already sitting in her dry clothes, a dim blue light escaping through the thin fabrics from the glow of the healing glyphs. Eda handed her a mug and brought her own to her lips, taking a long sip before sitting down next to her sister.
They sat like that for a while, sipping and waiting. Eventually, much to Eda’s surprise, Lilith broke the silence.
“So why?”
“Huh?” Eda replied, still deep in thought.
“Why did you decide to help me?” Lilith asked, looking into her mug as if it held all the answers “We both know I didn’t deserve it.”
“You’re right.” Eda replied simply. “You don’t deserve my help.”
Looking up from her tea and at her sister with genuine confusion, Lilith asked “So why did you help me then?”
“Let me finish. You don’t deserve my help. You cursed me, you kept your mouth shut about it for decades, until it was far too late, and in a desperate attempt to save your own ass you captured not only me, but my apprentice. My apprentice who I might as well call my own daughter at this point. You hurt her you know?”
Lilith’s eyes reverted back to her mug in shame.
“Oh yeah, she’s got bruises that aren’t even healed yet, that’s why she got looking into the healing glyphs. Plus, she faced Belos. She had to burn her only way home, she’s stuck here now. And me? I lost my magic. The most powerful witch on the boiling isles, now without the witch part.”
To emphasize her point, Eda drew a golden spell circle in the air, only for it to crumble into a pile of dust at her feet.
“Edalyn, I-”
“But,” the younger Clawthorne interjected, “that doesn’t make you a bad person, and I refuse to let it make me a bad person. I don’t know what your reasons were for cursing me, not telling me, I don’t know what Belos promised you, but it had to be pretty big to do what you did. And it’s my fault for not knowing. I kicked you out without even hearing you out, and you got hurt for it, I never even gave you a chance to explain yourself.”
It was Eda’s turn to avoid eye contact now, staring contemplatively into her now empty cup.
“It’s my fault you got hurt. That’s why I helped you. I was so caught up in my own anger that I didn’t think about the consequences of my actions. I’m still mad at you, and you’re far from forgiven, but I think you need help. Let me help you.”
For the first time in a long time, the two sisters met eyes in a moment of understanding.
“Ok.” Lilith said after a moment of comfortable silence.
“Good because I wasn’t really giving you a choice.”
They both laughed at that.
They sat for a moment, before it was finally Eda’s turn to speak first.
“So why’d you come here if you didn’t want my help?”
Lilith picked at her fingers for a moment before responding.
“I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t have anywhere else to go. It was so dark and so hot, I could barely even think, none of the other storms had gotten me this bad.”
Ah, so I was right. Eda regretted.
“It was like my feet took me here, all I knew was I needed to get out of the rain, and before I knew it I was in front of your house on my knees. I expected you to turn me away, I wanted you to turn me away.”
Eda didn’t know how to respond to that with anything other than “Why.”
Lilith thought for a moment.
“I guess I needed you to turn me away, I thought it might feel better to know that for once you would be the one leaving me in pain after 30 years of the roles being reversed, I think after all of that I deser-”
“No.” Eda interrupted. “I might not be the best sister, neither are you, but I will not ever let you suffer in any way remotely close to the way I did. Nobody deserves that, I sure as hell didn’t but neither do you. You will always have a place to stay with me, no matter how mad I am at you.”
They sat for a while longer, both deep in thought. Eventually Eda took both mugs back to the kitchen and rinsed them before going back to the living room, sitting next to Lilith one last time to help her out with the blankets.
“I think the shed is livable, the tower might be a bit too overgrown at the moment but we can work something out. You can stay on the couch tonight, no way you’re going back out into that. We can set ground rules in the morning, just try and get some sleep before the kid wakes up. She’s very excited about the new day, every day.” Eda spoke fondly.
“You really care for her, don’t you.” Lilith asked, a sad smile tugging on her lips.
“That I do. Goodnight Lilith.” Eda responded before stretching and cracking more joints than any one witch should physically be able to. “Woof, even sitting on that couch is enough to make me sore”
“I’m sure it’s just fine, thank you Edalyn, for everything. And goodnight.” Lilith said while trying to find a comfortable position on the lumpy couch. Her injuries, while significantly better, weren’t doing anything to help the situation. It wasn’t long before the soothing warmth of the healing glyphs lulled Lilith into a deep, dreamless sleep, much better than any she’d gotten on the forest floor.
Not even a few hours later, the sun shone on the owl house, waking Luz first, and if she was any quieter than normal that morning, or if she saw a certain gray haired owl lady sleeping on the floor next to Lilith’s position on the couch on her way out the door, she never mentioned it to a soul.
talking about toh | season two, episode four: keeping up a-fear-ances
i ytfugijkvcghdt what
previous | first | next spoilers under the cut, as always
the beginning
my goodness that owl thing is terrifying! i think we saw it briefly in that one promo but still!
young eda is back!
honestly, i thought eda ran away from home after she was cursed. i guess i was wrong.
when the healing coven dude gives eda the gem and says it's in style for young witches, i'm reasonably sure that's a reference to the fact that her gem wasn't originally meant to be an indicator of her curse. if i'm correct, that idea didn't even come about until "the intruder".
i love how eda has a poster in her room for rats, clearly a paridy of the musical cats. musical theatre nerd eda? anyone?
i'll talk more about this later, but we finally get to meet eda's mom! i like how she isn't painted as good or evil, just in between. she also seems to share eda's distaste for the coven system (though not as severe).
so even eda doesn't know where the door to the human realm came from, huh? interesting.
it doesn't look like eda's nickname came from her mom, or from lilith, since they both call her "edalyn" a majority of the time. did she start going by eda in school? did it come from her dad? did it come from somewhere else? huh?
the plot
i think it's kinda neat how eda's gold fang isn't actually meant to be a tooth replacement. it just makes her look cool. very on-brand for eda.
we now have confirmation-- more or less-- as to how the elixir tastes. apparently it's gross.
big fan of eda's new outfit. very much her style.
when eda said "beans" i thought she said "memes".
i love some of the visual humor in this show. the tea leaves "shrugging" made me giggle.
poor luz, she really wants to see her mom again. i can't imagine what that's like given that my mom is mediocre at best and makes me feel like shit a lot of the time but that must really suck. oops, sorry, too personal? let's move on.
i am a huge fan of how much closer eda and lilith seem to be now. they aren't enemies anymore, and that's great.
so witches can't detatch their limbs unless they're cursed? for some reason i thought that was universal.
okay, now we can talk about mrs. clawthorne. i saw her in the trailer, and i knew she wasn't eda because of her palisman. as a matter of fact, it's interesting that all three known clawthornes have bird palismans (palismen?). "escape of the palisman" reveals that not every palisman is a bird. is it a coincidence? is it a family tradition? i'm leaning more toward the latter.
but wow, gwen clawthorne. right off the bat i knew there would be people simping for her. i mean, people simp for both of her daughters, so it only makes sense. now, i'm ace, so i don't know much about milf, but does this make her a gilf? since she'd the mother of two milfs? (or are they still milfs if i don't want to--? never mind.)
i was expecting to dislike gwen, but i honestly ended up enjoying her character. sure, she can be a bit... much... but she loves her daughters.
oh, here's an odd detail. both gwen and eda's names end with "lyn", but lilith's doesn't. coincidence? no?
i would love to hear gwen's "strong words" for belos. let him get told off by an old lady!
aww, poor lilith just wants her mom to acknowledge her. it's not fun being the least favorite. i feel you on that one, lily. the older child is always less favored.
canon confirmation that lilith dyes her hair! i think dana said she did in an ama but now it's truly canon.
i knew something was fishy with wartlock from the beginning. there is no way he could have been legit.
i feel so bad for king. now that he knows he has a dad out there, all he wants in the world is to find him. poor thing.
what the hell is "knife season"?! is that a thing?
not gonna lie, i thought king and lilith got drunk off that ice cream. or maybe they did, and i'm just that bad at recognizing that stuff.
also, loving the lilith-king development. always great when two characters bond over angst.
"you know things are bad when hooty is the voice of reason." ~me, to my friend
honestly, a jar of bees would certainly help me with existential dread. i love bees.
i can't say i'm surprised that gwen's "cure" was just a bunch of made up bs. there's no way they could heal eda so early in the season.
gotta say, owl beast lilith looks dope.
i'm really happy that gwen learned to listen to eda. that's not something every mother learns.
i noticed that gwen was from the beastkeeper coven since we saw her in the promo, because i'd recognized the logo on her arm, but i think her controlling the bees was really cool. maybe i know what coven i would join. then again, i'm pretty much with eda on the "covens bad individualism good" front.
also, it looks like badassery runs in the family just as much as bird palismen do.
can we start a petition to help morton stay in business? he deserves it.
it was really interesting to see eda's point of view when she's the owl beast. it looks like she has to fight with the creature from the beginning for dominance over her own body.
the end
hoo boy. h o o b o y .
okay, let's start at the beginning. of the end. okay.
first of all, it shatters my heart into pieces that lilith is going to live with her mom now. i was just growing to like her, too.
and poor hooty! he found someone who considered him a real friend, only to have her ripped away just three episodes later. i hope she comes back soon.
is episode five going to be the episode where we find out that amity works at the library? (don't answer that, it's a rhetorical question.)
okay, now let's get to the real mind-boggling part: false luz. what--or who--the heck is she?! i've seen a lot of theories about that, ever since we saw the letters at the end of "enchanting grom fright", and we have options. i'll go more into those in the next section.
predictions
belos being behind this new false luz makes a lot of sense, since he's the main bad guy as of now. it's the most likely theory for now, but i feel like it's a bit too predictable.
eda was an option before, but now that she has no powers or access to the human realm, that's off the table.
i've seen theories about amity being behind it, but i suggest a new (and probably false) one.
what about the twins? it could be a situation similar to gwen's determination to heal eda's curse. ed and em seem to care about their sister (more or less), so it makes sense that they would do anything for her to be happy, and for her to be with the person that makes her happy-- even if it means trapping said person in a realm that isn't her own. besides, they're both in the illusions track, and from what we've seen they're very good at it. what if they're the ones who made false luz? i don't know if illusions can interact with things around them, like false luz does with the tissue box, but maybe advanced ones can? also, can you cast illusions in the human realm without a portal? out of all of guesses so far it's probably the least likely, but it's still an interesting concept.
on the topic of illusionists, we also have gus as a suspect. however, we can tell when he's controlling illusions, so surely we would have seen it by now. that does provide an argument against the blight twins being the culprits, but they are both older and more experienced. i'm sure their expertise in their track is similar to amity's in the abominations track, if their parents' expectations of them are anything like their expectations of amity. maybe skilled illusionists can control their illusions with their minds alone? or they can create semi-sentient illusions?
okay, that's enough crazed conspiracy-theorist rambling for today. see y'all next week for episode five!
Lilith Clawthorne x Fem!Reader: Scrapes & Dates
Summary: Anon requested “Hii I noticed requests are open, if it’s okay I’d like to request a fic, my idea if that reader is friends with Eda and low-key crushing on Lilith (her and Eda are semi-cool) bu thinks Lilith doesn’t like her because she’s kinda cold and closed off (she likes reader too). If it’s possible ofc, thanks anyway!”
A/N: Aaaaand I’m back! I hope you like it, lovely.
Warning(s): None :)
Tumblr media
Walking up to the Owl House, you couldn’t help but jump when Hooty’s eyes popped open suddenly. You knew he was there, but hoped he wouldn’t notice you.
“Hiya, Y/N!” The house demon screeched.
“Hi, Hooty. How’s it going?”
“It’s going great! I ate three bugs this morning!” He said proudly.
“That’s great - is Eda home?” You asked, trying not to be too blunt, but not wanting to hear about bugs for the rest of the afternoon.
“She sure is! Hoot!”
To your relief, the door swung open, allowing you entry. The last time you’d been stuck talking to Hooty, you had to listen to a retelling of his darkest moments. Some of them still made you shiver.
You expected to find Eda sitting on her couch sipping some apple blood, but instead it was Lilith. She was fully dressed for the day despite it only being the early afternoon. Not only did her surprise appearance make you nervous, it made you feel grossly underdressed.
“Oh, uh, hi Lilith.” You greeted her, giving an awkward little wave.
“Good morning, Y/N.” Lilith replied.
Lilith didn’t even bother to look up from what she was reading on her scroll. Her voice held little emotion, or interest. It dampened your demeanor a little bit. You never knew what you’d done to make the woman not like you. Of course you’d catch feelings for the one witch who wasn’t interested.
“Is Eda here?”
“In the kitchen.” Lilith said bluntly.
“Oh, thanks.” You tried to smile, though it looked much more like a grimace.
You shuffled through the room awkwardly. Though you were trying not to look awkward - which made it even worse. Being in the presence of the well put-together witch made you feel self-conscious about the way you held yourself. You may believe that she didn’t like you, but it didn’t stop you from trying to be your best when around her.
“Morning, Eda.”
“Hey, Y/N!” Eda said, surprisingly cheerful until she saw your expression, “You good?”
“Yeah, I’ve never been better! Just a little tired is all.” You lied.
You knew that Eda wouldn’t care if you had feelings towards Lilith. Hell, she’d probably help you out. But you felt embarrassed about having feelings for someone who clearly wasn’t interested.
“Okay then. Ready to go?” Eda asked, throwing on her usual disguise.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
That seemed to be good enough for her. Eda tipped back the rest of her apple blood, before slipping on her shoes. Then the two of you were off to the market. Wanted by the Emperor’s Coven or not, she still needed money. Especially since Luz was still attending Hexside.
Since she could no longer do magic, she’d enlisted more of your help to guard the stand. You needed an excuse to get out of the house. It all worked out perfectly.
“Alright, Lily, we’re off to the market!” Eda announced.
That got a reaction from the stoic witch.
“The market? Edalyn, that’s a horrible idea,” Lilith protested, “You know how dangerous it is! It will be even worse if Y/N is seen with us.”
You were shocked Lilith had included you. Typically, she’d go on about scolding her sister as if you weren’t even there. The change was nice.
“Y/N is more than capable of handling herself and so am I, Lily.” Eda said, rolling her eyes as she reached the front door.
She turned the knob and gave you a look that said ‘well, are you coming?’ and prompted you to get moving. Lilith looked furious that nobody was backing her up, but didn’t say anything further. Just watched with a frown as the two of you left.
You felt guilty not listening to Lilith or backing her up. It was dangerous to go back to the market, you both knew that, but there wasn’t another choice. Money had to be made somehow. This was the best bet.
---
And despite being the best bet, it was also the worst idea either of you had.
Things had been going fine for a while. Too fine. There had been a steady stream of customers for quite a while. Until the Emperor’s guard walked by.
Eda’s disguise was horrible at covering who she was. It’d been all too easy for a Coven guard to look over, spot her, and turn your whole day upside-down. That was how you found yourself crouched behind an overturned table, throwing spells back and forth with a multitude of guards while Eda scribbled some runes on paper.
“We need to get out of here before they call in more guards!” You yelled to Eda above the noise of spells and destruction.
As if on cue, a wave of guards surrounded you from behind. Locking you in completely.
“Damn, Y/N, you have the worst timing!” Eda said, slamming her hand down on two runes and throwing them at the new guards.
You were going to respond, but decided it against it. You needed to focus all of your energy on dealing with these guards. They were slowly closing in on all sides. There wasn’t any time for distractions.
Unfortunately though, it seemed your magical prowess was no match for their numbers. The two of you were about two spells away from being captured and taken to the emperor.
Which made Lilith’s timing perfect.
The witch had appeared behind the larger group of guards, using a combination of rune magic and her remaining magic to knock them down. It drew the attention away from you and Eda for just long enough to attack the rest. The three of you were effective in taking them all down, but you guessed that you had about five minutes before more were going to show.
“Are you alright?” Lilith asked you uncharacteristically. She walked right up to you, inspecting you for any wounds or marks.
“I-I’m fine, Lilith,” You stuttered out, shocked at the treatment, before catching sight of a wound on her arm, “but you’re not.”
Without hesitating you ripped a piece of cloth off of your clothing and wrapped it snugly, but gently, around the wound on her arm. You tied it tight enough that the bleeding would stop, but carefully enough that it wouldn’t hurt her.
When you looked back up at Lilith, her gaze was soft. Warm. It shocked you so much that a bright red blush appeared on your face.
“God, will you two just kiss or something already?” Eda groaned from her place next to you.
You both jumped into action helping the witch up and packing the things around you. Coven guards were yelling from a couple blocks away when you left. The three of you let out a collective sigh of relief.
“Y/N?” Lilith asked.
“Hm?”
“Would you go to dinner with me?”
The question shocked you. Almost enough to stop you in your tracks. But you couldn’t help the beaming smile that wormed its way onto your face.
“I would love to.” You said.
And with one little kiss to her cheek, you sealed the deal to your future.
Favors of A. Blight ch 3
Rating: T
Word Count: 2,927 (2,910 excluding parentheticals)
Contains: Description of Panic attack and associated thoughts, starting in the second paragraph, mention of death
Edric awoke suddenly, with nothing but a sharp intake of breath. He let his eyes remain closed and relaxed his breathing as he strained his ears. Closest to him, he could hear Emira, still asleep, and took comfort in her presence. Then, just beyond Emira, he could hear Amity’s light snoring. He was half-tempted to summon his scroll so he could record it, and finally prove to her that she did indeed snore, but he quickly dismissed the idea. Then, he heard someone he didn’t recognize, mumbling sleepily. He dared to open eyes, and his breath caught in his throat.
(Warning, depiction of a panic attack in the next six paragraphs)
This wasn’t his room. This wasn’t the manor. Judging by the noises from outside, they weren’t even in Bonesborough, or any city, for that matter. His thoughts began to race, imagining any number of scenarios that could be going. He clenched his eyes shut, and tried to will his breathing to calm. But it wouldn’t, and he could feel his breath escaping in bursts. His eyes hurt, even as he squeezed them shut even tighter, and his ears were ringing and his throat hurt because he couldn’t control his breath. He couldn’t breathe, even though he knew he had to be breathing because he could hear it, he could feel it in his throat but it didn’t matter because he couldn’t breathe and he was going to pass out, or possibly-
“Edric,” a voice. He recognized the voice. It was Emira. She was close. He reached out to her and grabbed. He could feel his heart beating rapidly, and he was sure Emira could too. His face flushed; ashamed. Here they were in an unfamiliar building, and he was useless. Just like mother warned him. He was useless and he couldn’t even do anything to protect his sisters and they were gonna- “Edric, breathe!” Emira said.
“I’m trying!” he wanted to yell, but what came out was more of a mangled gasp. Couldn’t she tell he was doing his best! Even though his best wasn’t good enough, he was trying! He felt something warm running down his face.He couldn’t even fake being alright? Emira was still talking, but he couldn’t hear the words, even though she was right there. She was drowned out by his ragged breathing and the ringing in his ears!
Suddenly, there was someone else at his side; he refused to open his eyes, but he could feel their presence there. He gripped Emira tighter. There was a hand on his shoulder. He clenched his fists, and he swung. And a pained grunt broke through the ringing in his ears and his ragged breathing. He chanced to open his eyes, and saw… Luz? They got Luz too? And she was holding her arm over her stomach? He’d hit Luz? He hadn’t meant to. Luz was nice, he didn’t want to hurt her. More tears slipped down his face.
“Edric,” Luz’s voice managed to cut through, and she was looking at him. “Can you see me?” Of course he could see her! He nodded. “Good. What’s something else you can see?” He looked around, and his eyes landed on Emira. He lifted the arm he was grasping. “Good. Can you focus on Emira while I look through my stuff for something?” He nodded, and turned to look more fully towards his twin, seeing the worry in her eyes. He felt the shame rise in his cheeks. She was worried about him because he couldn’t handle himself. What kind of brother was he? He gripped her tighter as he tried again to get his breathing under control.It was still ragged, but it didn’t hurt as much as it had.
Luz returned, and placed something in his hand, “It’s a fidget cube,” Luz explains, and Edric turns his attention to it. It’s… certainly cube shaped, for the most part. He regards it wearily, moving his thumb on a circular pad on one of the faces, noting that it moved with his thumb. “Can you focus on it for me? See what it does?” He nodded, and focused on the cube as best he could, using his thumb and fingers to manipulate the various sides.
(Descriptions relating to panic attack over)
A few moments later, he realized he wasn’t breathing as hard, and his ears weren’t ringing. His throat and eyes still hurt, and there were still a few tears washing down his face, but he could breathe. “Thank you,” he whispered.
Emira and Luz both hugged him, “Edric what was that?” his sister asked, “Are you okay? You’ve never done that before.”
“I don’t know,” he says, even though he wants to tell her that he’s never had something that bad before.
“I think you had a panic attack?” Luz said, and he turned to her. Emira did too, judging by how she suddenly looked between the two, “It’s a thing, in the Human Realm. My mom gets them sometimes. She says having something physical to focus on and work with helps her with them, and sometimes that’s ADHD toys, or a stress ball, and she also has a mantra that helps. But I happened to find that in some of the junk Eda’s been collecting from trash slugs.” With an exaggerated gag, Edric dropped the toy, causing Luz and Emira to laugh. “Don’t worry,” Luz said, “I made sure to scrub it totally clean! I think I might have used more soap on it than on Hooty last month.”
“That just makes me worry about how clean Hooty is,” Emira joked.
“We try, but,” Luz shuddered, and changed the subject, “Anyway, getting some food and drink will also help, Ed.  So let me wake Amity-”
“I’m awake,” the girl in the blanket burrito said, “but somebody,” Edric knew that if Amity were facing them, she’d be glaring at him and Emira,  “trapped me.”
“Right,” Luz said, “I’ll help with that, and then we’ll go see about breakfast.”
Luz was able to unwrap Amity, and managed to keep her from much more than glaring at the twins as they all got ready to head downstairs. A cursory glance in the living room revealed only King, curled up on the couch, and Hooty missing from the door. Edric was curious about that, but noticed Luz shuddered at the hole and turned away. Better not to ask, he assumed.
Instead, Luz led them to the kitchen, where the group discovered Eda tiredly mixing something in a cauldron. “Morning kids,” she greeted with a yawn.
"Morning Eda!" Luz beamed, "Where did Lilith and Hooty go?"
Eda was silent for a moment, mixing her potion, before she responded, "I'm thinking about expanding the Owl House, so I sent Hooty out with Lilith a few hours ago so he could shop around at the construction coven. Because for SOME reason he doesn't trust me to make the expansions any more."
"Expansions? I thought the Owl House was just… like this?" Luz questioned.
"House demons don't usually take to expansions well," Edric commented, "Is Hooty different?"
"I'd need more hands if I was gonna list how Hooty's different," Eda commented, "but you're right that house demons don't usually like expansions. But it's not because they prefer growing naturally or anything. It's because most witches only care for what they want, not what the house demon wants. Design, functionality, floor plans, even what materials are used. That ends up choking the house demon until they decide to just tear down the offending bit."
"That's," Luz commented, "kind of sad."
"Yeah. It's why house demons are a lot less popular now. Most witches don't know anything about compromise. All you have to do is work with and trust your house demon, and they'll be more than happy to let you expand them."
"Most house demons also can't remove themselves from the house without dying?" Edric questioned curiously. Eda gestured towards the living room, the hole in the door clearly visible. "I mean, how is it Hooty can just leave, when most house demons can't?"
"Hooty has experience and I have know-how," Eda commented, "There's a reason they call me the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles.How come you know so much about house demons anyway?"
Edric felt his face heat up as he mumbled his answer, “I’ve been looking at them for when I get my own place.”
“Huh,” Eda commented, “Didn’t expect that. Well, tell you what, if Hooty ends up meeting a nice shack, I’ll tell you where they leave the egg.” Eda laughed, and Edric cracked a small smile at the offer
(Line Break)
Lilith was tired. Well, that wasn’t exactly true; she and Eda had each whipped up an invigorating potion to make up for the night of lost sleep, so she was more than awake. She was just processing. There was… a lot to process. Hooty seemed to recognize this; he’d draped himself over her shoulders, and seemed to be doing his best to comfort her. She patted his head, and decided to make idle conversation, “What kind of rooms are you thinking about getting, Hootsifer?”
“At least four bedrooms, and a bathroom. And a library! Luz and the angry one like books, and I’ve always wanted to be a smart, sophisticated house! Or I could play up my fun loving nature and get a rec room! Or an indoor pool!”
“Those all sound quite lovely,” she placed her hand on his hand and patted him gently, “but an outdoor pool would attract more bugs, don’t you think?”
Hooty gasped, “You’re so smart Lulu! It would be like a stew and I could drink it whenever!” She laughed, and continued to pet her friend for a while, until they arrived at a shop operated by the Construction Coven.
“What can I do you for?” Asked the burly witch behind the counter.
“Good morning ma’am,” Lilith greeted, “My sister is looking to expand her home. Have you by chance heard of the Owl House?”
“Heard of it?” The witch guffawed, “The place is a legend in the Construction Coven! No one knows who built it, or how they managed to get one of the most violent house demons known to witch kind to cooperate!”
“I’m not that violent!” Hooty complained, causing the witch, who likely hadn’t realized Hooty was more than an accessory, to scream. “I’m a caring and gentle soul!”
“You’re the Owl House house demon?” the witch seemed afraid, and was backing away from them.
“Yep! I’m Hooty! And this,” he took a moment to wrap Lilith in a hug, “is my best friend, Lulu!”
“Pleasure to meet you,” the witch managed to stutter out, “but it's a coven policy we don’t do work on house demons.” The witch let out a nervous laugh, “Sorry about that.”
“Ah, but I thought you guys wanted to know all about me!” Hooty complained, drooping.
“Yes,” Lilith said, hiding a smirk as an idea presented itself, “It really is a shame they’ll never learn the secret to working on house demons. Especially ones that want at least six new rooms, and a pool. It’s a shame to think we’ll have to keep all that knowledge, and money, to ourselves. I imagine all that could put someone in line for coven head.”
“I know you’re playing me,” the witch acknowledged, timidly, “but you’re right.” The witch, reluctantly, began to guide them around the story. They spent, by Lilith’s count, at least two hours in the store, talking about different woods and stones, with a promise that the witch would come by that afternoon to begin the actual project.
In another hour, following a quick stop at one of the new chain-restaurants that had been popping up recently,  they returned to the Owl House, the mid-morning sun shining brightly. “Could you get the door?” Lilith asked, gesturing with her head, as her arms were occupied by a number of sacks, and at least one box. She hoped she had gotten enough food for breakfast. Hooty obliged, opening the door, before grabbing a number of sacks from her with his beak, extending towards the kitchen.
Carefully, she sat down what she still carried, and removed the backpack Hooty resided in, setting it on the floor. She picked up what she still had to carry, and made her way to the kitchen as Hooty returned. She did her best to ignore the sounds behind her, closing the door to the living room once she made it through.
She was greeted by everyone’s faces, as she entered, save Eda who was focused intently on downing her apple blood.’Good morning,” she greeted.
“Yeah yeah, it’s morning. Are we going to eat already?” King responded before anyone else, and Lilith sighed.
“Of course, King,” Lilith said, placing the box on the table and opening it to reveal a large assortment of pastries, most of which had a notable yellow filling.
“Oooh!” called King, “Slitherbeast claws!” as he scampered across the table to grab two of the paw shaped treats.He held them up in either hand, and let out a roar. Lilith noted, as did King judging by his “Weh?” that everyone else at the table blanched. Thankfully, after a moment, Luz let out a small laugh, which seemed to satisfy the young demon.
When King had made his way back to his seat, Emira spoke, “We aren’t normally allowed sweets for breakfast.”
“Since when has that stopped us?” Edric asked, having already absconded with a number of tarts.
“Since it’s being allowed,” she said, looking carefully at Lillith. Edric, for what it was worth, put down the tart he had just been about to bite into, though kept it in front of him.
“Emira’s right,” Amity said, making a quick show of disgust at the words, “Our parents would never allow this.”
“That’s what makes this sweeter,” Edric replied, before Lilith could get a word in. He took a bite, adding, “Besides, it’s thornberry!”
“Doesn’t this strike you as a little odd?” Emira almost pleaded with her brother.
“Yeah,” he answered, “Dad sent us out in the middle of a boiling rain storm, to have us stay overnight, at the house of two of the formerly most wanted-”
“Hey!” Eda attempted to interrupt, though didn’t manage to stop Edric’s speech.
“-individuals in the Boiling Isles, with not so much as a message from Mom since yesterday morning. So yeah, it’s a little odd.” There was a small bite to Edric’s voice, and it was apparently unusual, judging by how both Emira and Amity reacted to it, “So let’s just enjoy some pastries before the other shoe drops. Please.”
“Is Edric right?” Emira asked, turning to Lilith, who weighed her two choices in her mind. Either say yes, and risk freaking out Emira, Amity, and possibly Luz, or saying no, and making it hurt more later.
“Yeah, mostly.” Eda made the decision for her, “Except I’m still topping the wanted charts.” Lilith noted Emira looking to Edric, and then Amity, with concern, before wordlessly grabbing a few pastries for herself. Amity followed her siblings’ lead, and then so did Luz, leaving Eda and Lilith to split the rest, as Lilith took her own seat at the table.
The breakfast passed slowly in the silence, and there was an unmistakable tension in the room. King finished first, and Lilith noted that he was exceptionally quick to leave the room. Luz finished next, followed by Eda, and then Edric, Emira and Amity. Lilith set down her remaining pastry. “There has been some… upsetting news.” When the children all remained silent, even Luz. “Luz, could you go make sure King isn’t getting into anything?”
“No,” Amity refused, quickly grabbing Luz by the arm as she tried to stand, “Please, stay.” Wordlessly, Luz sat back down, gripping Amity’s hand in an attempt to comfort her.
“Very well,” Lilith said, “Right… Last night, your father sent you to us, even though it was a rather brutal rain storm. “ Emira was the first one to nod in acknowledgement, followed by Edric. “And there was a reason for that.”
After a moment of silence, Eda spoke, “Odalia saw that there was going to be an attack at the manor yesterday.” Lilith almost spoke up, but Eda continued after giving the children a second to digest the news, “She didn’t think you guys were gonna get hurt, but she didn’t want to risk it, so she had Alador send you kids somewhere no one would think to look for you.”
“Oh,” the twins managed to chorus, and Lilith noted Amity squeezing Luz’s hand tightly as she tried to keep her expression neutral.
Lilith picked up the silence, “This morning, I passed the manor. The wards had been undone, and… there were already guards and members of the Oracle coven investigating.” It was silent, as the children stared at her with the almost blank looks that Lilith knew meant ‘Please don’t say what you’re going to say.’ But it was too late now. “Your father…. Wasn’t found in the building’s remains.” What went unspoken, but very clearly heard, was that their mother had been.
“Excuse me,” Amity said, her voice barely holding together, before she got up from the table and ran back to the room she and her twins had spent the previous night in. The twins followed suit, leaving only Lilith, Eda, and Luz at the table. After a small eternity, Luz said, “I’m going to go check on them.”
Slumber Party (Part 1)
(Let’s have a little fun with our fluff shall we)
Ask anyone and they’d tell you Eda was a powerful witch, a force to be reckoned with, and downright terrifying when she’s mad. Someone like that could not be tamed, she was wild, she was free, she was wearing an apron and covered in flour.
Truly horrifying, and perhaps just a little on the unexpected side.
Now on the question of how she got into this predicament in the first place. It was simple really. Earlier that day Luz expressed that she’s never had a slumber party, well there was the Moonlight Conjuring but she meant just a typical slumber party without any of that other stuff. And Eda, for some unknown reason that even she herself couldn’t fathom, suggested that maybe it would be okay if Luz wanted to have one.
Cue the young girls squeals of excitement, a little extra dose of that parallel arm thing, and here she was. In the kitchen making cookies for her kid and a few other young witchlings. Why? Well because Luz wanted them of course. Just don’t tell anyone for she still has some semblance of a reputation that she wants to maintain. But gosh darn it why was it so hard to say no to that kid or refuse her anything. Not only that but she was going out of her way to do things without even being asked.
It wasn’t Luz who suggested the slumber party. And Luz didn’t actually ask for the cookies nor was it said that she had to make them, she could have gone out and bought some after she overheard her kid mention them. Just what the heck was going on with her lately.
Before she could continue on that reputation shattering train of thought King came bounding into the kitchen and onto the counter. “Are those cookies I smell?”
She had to smack his paw away after setting the tray down on the counter. “These aren’t for you they’re for the kid, last I check you weren’t one.”
King glared at her as he stomped his little foot. “Demon’s can still enjoy cookies too. As king I demand you give me one!”
Eda rolled her eyes at his antics “sure pipsqueak, keep pretending you’re in a position to make demands.” Her smile was smug but instead of the reaction she expected he looked away and asked for one, even going so far as to say please. And she just didn’t have it in her to refuse, or at least not anymore, what was happening to her.
“Alright just one, the rest are for the kid- at least wait till they cool down!” But it was already too late, he had reached for one and ended up burning his paw which he proceeding to stuff in his mouth as he hopped from one foot to another.
She would have made more comments if it wasn’t for Luz popping up right next to her, effectively startling the witch. “Oooo cookies!” oblivious to King’s predicament the girl also decided to reach for one which I’m sure you can imagine what followed. It took all the strength Eda had not to bang her head against something.
It could have been anyone, literally anyone, but these are the two she got stuck with.
While King continued to cry over most likely nothing, Luz composed herself much faster for she gave Eda a grateful smile. “Did you make these?”
“Yeah, I overheard how you said they were great for parties.” Eda crossed her arms and looked away during her reply. It’s not like it was a big deal.
“Thank you, Eda!” Oh no, here comes another one of those hugs. ‘You know you like them, stop pretending you don’t’  Shut up brain!
“Willow, Gus, and Amity are going to love these!” The young girl’s enthusiasm was contagious as she helped to get the cookies onto a plate before taking them into the living room and setting them on the coffee table. Eda followed to find her living room decorated with pillows and blankets strewn about. On the couch was a huge bowl of popcorn and a few of King’s stuffed animals minions were already sitting there.
“Luz said they could partake too!” The little demon added cheerfully from behind her before climbing up on the couch to grab hold of his favorite minion, Francois. “Tonight we shall make our plan to take over the Isles!” King held the stuffed rabbit over his head as he laughed evilly but quieted a bit when he felt someone petting him.
“No world domination tonight, you little peach, just friends and fun!” His evil laughter turned to cute giggles as Luz picked him up to sit on the couch with him in her lap.
Eda hadn’t realized how soft her expression became until a knock at the door broke her out of her trance. “Some guests have arrived, hoot hoot.” Hooty declared as the door opened on its own. ‘No ****’ was what she wanted to say but there were children present and also this story has a rating to keep.
She crossed the room to find Willow at the door standing between her two dads. “Good afternoon, miss Eda.” The young girl smiled warmly at her and Eda couldn’t help smiling back before directing her attention towards the kids parents.
“Thank you for allowing WIllow to stay over.” commented a dark skinned man with a rather bushy beard. For some reason Eda wanted to ask if he was able to hide things in it too but decided against that. “Willow’s been so excited, it’s not often she gets to do this.” Added the other nerd-looking one with the glasses.
“Dads!” Willow cried out with more than just a hint of embarrassment.
“Sorry sweetie, you know we’re just as happy as you are.” Seems Luz wasn’t the only one who was missing out on a lot. Eda once again smiled at the witchling as she pointed behind her. “Luz is already waiting on the couch, if you’re not careful her and King might finish off all the snacks before you even have a chance to have any.” Well mostly King, Luz would be more preoccupied with being a good host.
The young witch giggled “Thanks again, miss Eda!” She chirped before moving past the older woman to join Luz on the couch. Eda watched her go with a content expression on her face before turning back towards Willow’s dads. The one with the beard was already writing something on a piece of paper.
“If you need anything, anything at all, feel free to scroll us.” Bushy beard handed her the paper while glasses continued talking. “She has this medication she needs to take, she’s usually very good at remembering but could you see that she does just in case?”
“You know what it’s like with kids, when they’re having fun it’s easy to forget everything else.”
For a moment she was taken rather aback with the situation she founded herself in but was quick to compose herself as she shot them a genuine look of understanding. “Of course I will, I promise she’s safe under my roof.” She was simply saying what she would want to hear if it was her dropping Luz off at someone’s house.
It seemed to be enough though for the smiles they shot at her were bright and warm. “Thank you very much, despite your reputation you really are a good person like Willow said.” And just like that the world had to prove she still had heartstrings. How dare that kid spread lies about her.
After waving goodbye, Eda closed the door only for another knock to be heard what felt like seconds later. Since she was right there she opened it herself this time before Hooty could swing himself open and most likely hit her in the face. She wouldn’t be able to guarantee safety under her roof if there wasn’t a house anymore.
Gus stood with his reporter dad and waved rather excitedly at her. “Hi Eda, are Luz and Willow here?” Before Luz she would have found him exhausting but the girl was way worse so she was numb to it now.
“Nope, you just missed them.” She crossed her arms and gave him a toothy grin to which he responded by deflating just a bit. “Of course this would happen.”
The older witch chuckled. “I’m just messing with you kid, go on in.” Eda moved aside to let him pass which he did, rather loudly. She wondered if she was actually gonna get sleep tonight. Then she realized she was allowing a bunch of kids to stay in her house for the night. So no, most likely not.
She heard someone clear her throat before realizing that oh yeah, Gus’ dad was still there. “Thanks for letting him stay over, and uh nice to see you didn’t get petrified.” Oh man he was just as awkward as his son.
“Um, thanks? Is there something else you wanted or can I shut the door now?”
“Yeah, sure. I’m going now, sorry about that.” So that’s where the kid got it from.
She was at least able to make it across the room this time before the door swung open. Hooty didn’t even wait for the knock this time as three kids were left standing with their fists held out.
Two of them, the clearly older ones, laughed. “I’d love to have a door like this someday.” The older girl commented while her brother nodded. “Just imagine all the stuff we could pull off with one.” he added.
The smaller one in the middle frowned as she crossed her arms. “See if I ever visit you.”
“Of course” her older sister began in a singsong voice. “You’d only put up with this kind of torture if it was for~” This prompted a rather red faced Amity to quickly cover her mouth before she said something she’d regret, causing the boy and even Eda to smirk as she made her way towards the door.
“Hey kids.”
“Hi Eda!” The twins said in unison once Amity let Emira go. “We’re just here to drop off our precious baby sister” Emira commented as Edric patted their, growing increasingly frustrated, little sister’s head.
“I could have walked myself.” The witchling growled out but her expression completely changed, which did not go unnoticed by any of the three, when she saw Luz approaching the door.
“Amity!” The human cried out happily as she greatly encouraged the young witch inside. “Hurry, we were just about to start playing a game!”
“I-I’m coming, just hold up already.” Her tone feigned annoyance but in truth she was very happy with any attention from the human. It was adorably amusing.
“So” Emira smirked as she acknowledged the other two with her again. ”Who wants to make bets that something will happen tonight?”
“Psh, together in a house at night? If something didn’t happen I’ll be amazed but also greatly disappointed.” Eda stated before adding. “You’re on kid!”
After all the bets were placed the twins waved goodbye and Eda could finally close the door without worrying about any more guests needing to show up.
Knock knock.
Or so she thought. “Kid, how many people did you invite?”
Luz looked up from their game to count on her fingers. “Let’s see just Willow, Gus, Amity, and-”
“Hello, sister.”
Of all the people Eda expected to see standing there Lilith was not one of them. Heck she would have expected even that Boscha girl more than her own sister. True things were slightly... better, for lack of a better word, between them but now that she wasn’t in the coven she tended to keep to herself in the tower behind their house.
“What are you doing here, Lilith?” She didn’t intend to sound mean or anything, just surprised.
“The human, Luz, invited me to your ‘party’ as she called it.”
Eda looked towards her apprentice with an expression that conveyed she wasn’t mad just, confused and maybe slightly sad. “Why?”
As Luz considered what she’d say for a moment her group of friends watched and waited for her explanation to which she finally just shrugged. “I guess I just thought, it’s been some time since everything happened, why not take little steps towards making things better.” Eda and Lilith considered what the girl had to say as she continued. “Whether we like it or not Lilith is gonna be with us now. She’s powerless she can’t go anywhere else. It took awhile and I still don’t know if I forgive her... But I think it’s okay to start letting her back in little by little.”
Silence ruled the house as Lilith looked towards the human gratefully, so that’s what her younger sister saw in her. Finally Eda turned towards Lilith with a sigh. “Luz is right, you’re welcome to stay if you wish.”
“Perhaps for just a little while, I won’t overstep my boundaries.” They gave each other small smiles before Eda directed her towards the couch. She then fixed her kid with a stare as she held the door open. “Now is there anyone else I have to worry about? Did you invite the emperor too?”
“Well” Luz joked causing Eda to roll her eyes. “Kid, if it wasn’t for all these people I would have thrown you outside by now.”
“Nah, you love me too much.”
“A fact I’m starting to regret.” The others chuckled at the Owl Lady’s comment as she closed the door, finally.
Walking over towards the group she saw Luz rise up from her spot with a start. “Oh gosh, I forgot the drinks.”
“Hey kiddo, it’s okay I’ll get them” Eda ruffled Luz’s hair. “You just have fun with your friends.” To that Luz wrapped her arms around Eda’s neck and nuzzled against her cheek with a “Thank you!” She was always dramatic with her appreciation that way. But instead of complaining Eda held her back for just a moment before letting go and dropping her on the floor. “Affection, gross.”
“Just you wait, one of these days I’ll get you to stop pretending that you don’t like it.”
“Sure kid, whatever you say.” Eda turned to her sister with a slightly cautious look. “Would you mind helping me?”
“Not at all.” Came the quick reply as the two older women made their way into the kitchen leaving the kids, and King, alone.
Most had soft smiles on their faces as if they just saw the cutest thing ever. Amity’s face was the same as ever but there was a bit of red to it, she was the only one not looking in Luz’s direction.
“Okay, now who’s ready for truth or dare?” Luz asked, to which Gus responded by raising his hand and asking what that is.
Happy Birthday (pt 2)
This is part of my Four Years AU
AO3
Masterpost
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
It was October thirteenth.
Luz’s first birthday without her mother.
She hadn’t told anyone what today was. She had mentioned it before, during the summer. But Eda and King weren’t known to be the best at remembering something so small from a single conversation.
They were already worried about her, it would only make things worse to remind them.
She saw the worried glances Eda and King gave her. Even Lilith looked concerned. Luz assured them she was fine before she holed up back in the library and, later, her room. Which she had made into makeshift into a study area.
Just because it was her birthday didn’t mean she had to stop trying. Even if it was her quinceañera.
‘Mamá must be worried.’ Her mind murmured.
‘She probably thinks you ran away.’ Added a snicker from the back of her mind. ‘She must think you hate her.’
Luz shook her head and hunched back over her papers. This wasn’t the time to mope and worry. This was the time for research! Even the words ran off the pages and her mind kept wandering.
‘You shouldn’t have gone through that door.’ Her thoughts spoke up again. ‘How bad could a reality check camp be, really? Would you really rather spend an eternity here, where your madre will never know if you're alive or dead?’
“Will you be quiet?” Luz snapped to no one.
‘Look at you,’ Her mind sneered back. ‘Talking to yourself. Maybe you did need that summer camp.’
Luz groaned and thunked her head on her desk, hands collapsing behind her neck. How was she supposed to work under these conditions?
She should’ve asked Gus to research with her. Out of all her friends, he was by far the most willing to spend all-nighters reading and searching for anything human. Any single link to the human realm.
This wasn’t to say Willow and Amity didn’t help her. They did, plenty of times. But it was always Gus she could call at two in the morning and ask to travel with her to some long-forgotten ruin on the slim chance it had even a sentence of human language on its stones. Amity was definitely a close second.
Everyone had tried. Even before the summer was over they had tried. Luz still beat herself up about not searching harder when she didn’t have to worry about her madre thinking she was lost somewhere. Every day that ticked by didn’t seem to bring her any closer to making it home.
The first week when summer vacation was over was horrible. Luz barely got any sleep and practically tore the library apart looking for any book on the human realm. She had crashed on the fifth day and slept all of the sixth. While she slept, her friends had taken up researching for her. Even Eda and King. Well, King tried. He couldn’t read all that well, but Lilith was happy to help.
Luz tried to at least get a few hours of sleep each day now. She still had bags under her eyes and her footsteps still dragged, but at least she wasn’t about to collapse anymore.
‘Mamá would tell you to go to sleep.’
Luz lifted her head and looked towards the window. It had originally been a hole in the wall courtesy of one of her recent adventures, so Eda had turned it into a wonky window instead of bothering to fix it up.
It was dusk. How had time gone by so fast?
Luz dug around in her desk for her glyphs and pulled out her light spell. She tapped the paper and it transformed into a small ball of light. She let it float next to her for a moment, simply watching it.
“She would like this spell.” Luz said to herself. “It doesn’t cost any bills to keep up.”
She almost laughed at her own joke. Almost.
‘Yeah, like she’d be proud of anything you did here.’
Luz sighed and turned back to the pages spread out before her. She stared blankly for a few moments, repeatedly telling herself to focus and failing to do so.
Then her bedroom door slammed open.
“LUZ!” King cried.
Luz yelped and shot backwards, tumbling out of her chair and hitting the wooden floor.
King winced and scurried over to where she lay, giving her a nervous look.
“Eh heh, sorry…”
“King! Don’t scare me like that!” Luz scolded, sitting up and rubbing her head.
“Sorry, but it’s important!” King said, waving his little arms. “Come on, come on!”
“Is something wrong?” Luz worried, standing up as King tugged on her cape.
“Well, no,” King said, still pulling her out of her room. “But it’s still important!”
Luz, more confused than ever, followed King as he finally let go of her cape and scampered down the stairs, practically shaking with excitement.
A part of Luz was expecting some prank he and Hooty had concocted. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for them these days.
Luz wandered down the stairs as King skittered towards the living room. She heard murmuring and frowned, slowing her steps until she was right by the doorway and peeked her head in, one hand resting on the doorframe.
Willow, Gus and Amity were sitting on the floor around the couch. They had pushed a table up in front of it. A cake sat on the table, and Amity was currently trying to stick in a candle shaped like a five next to the one shaped like a one, though was clearly having trouble as the candle was made of something very squirmy and kept shifting into something that looked more like a weird S.
Gus was trying to help contain the candle as Willow looked on with concern, holding a small square lidded box in her lap.
Eda and Lilith were sitting on the couch directing Gus and Amity with little success. As Lilith was also dealing with Hooty continuously bugging her with questions or whatever he ate outside that day.
King had just arrived and was now climbing onto the table, promptly freaking out everyone else who clearly didn’t expect him to be back so soon.
“Guys…?” Luz blinked, taking a step into the room.
Everyone's heads whirled around to her, none of them having expected her to make it downstairs faster than they anticipated.
Hooty, as per usual, was the first to break the silence.
“Hi, Luz!” He greeted. “We made a cake!”
“You didn’t do anything!” Lilith snapped. “All you did was be a lookout. A very lousy one, at that!”
“Hey! I deserve credit for doing something!”
“What...is all this?” Luz asked, deciding it was better to cut in before Lilith and Hooty started arguing again.
“What does it look like, kid?” Eda snorted, snatching the five candle from Amity and sharply sticking it into the cake, making it lopsided and causing clear distress to Amity’s OCD.
“This is what human birthdays look like, right?” Gus worried, sitting upright and putting his hands on the table. “Was there supposed to be streamers? I knew we should’ve gotten streamers,” He grumbled.
“No, no, it’s just…” Luz looked over everyone before her eyes landed on Eda and King, who had hopped onto the couch beside her.
“You...remembered?” She asked quietly.
“Of course we did! The King of Demons never forgets!” King said proudly.
“Yesterday you forgot that you drank your own apple blood and threw a fit because you thought someone else drank it.” Amity deadpanned.
“That was one time!”
“Happy birthday, Luz.” Willow said, gesturing for her to sit down and setting the small box on the table.
Luz slowly walked towards the table, sitting on her knees at the end of the table. Still stunned, she slid the gift closer to her and pulled off the lid.
Inside it was a book. It was dark blue with golden lining along the edges. It’s title in gold cursive read; Glyph Spells & Other Written Magic .
“Thought you could use one of those,” Willow said casually. “Since you’ve got your own students to teach now.”
“We all pitched in for it,” Eda said gleefully.
Amity gave the witch a very pointed glare. One that Eda sighed in response to.
“Alright, we all pitched in to look for it. Little Miss Rich over here paid for it.” She relented, pointing a thumb towards the girl.
“I tasted it!” Hooty added happily. “It tastes like old dust and death.”
Luz carefully lifted the book out of the box. It seemed like well-kept book. Though the frantic scratches among the cover here and there proved that it had likely been quickly cleaned before placed in the box. The pages were yellow and crinkled, and there was the occasional stain or tear. But overall, it wasn’t unreadable.
“Do you…” Amity swallowed. “Like it?”
Luz kept her eyes on the book for a few quiet seconds. She pulled the book close to her chest and lifted her head, trying and failing to fight back the tears welling in her eyes.
“I love it.” She said hoarsely, a wide smile stretched across her face.
Everyone in the room visibly relaxed, shoulders sagging.
“Does this mean we can have cake now?” King asked, impatiently tugging on Eda’s dress. “I’m starving!”
“Nope!” Hooty chirped, his head popped up beside Luz and startled her. “It’s group hug time!”
“Wait, wait, Hooty NO--!”
Hooty was faster than any of them could react and wrapped around them all, pulling them into a tight ball with Luz squished in the middle.
“A little more warning next time?” Gus wheezed from where he was currently being suffocated by the insistent bird tube.
“The cake!” Willow exclaimed.
Everyone craned their necks downwards towards the table.
Sure enough, amongst the struggle to get everyone in a circle, the cake had been knocked off the table and onto the floor, completely smashed against the carpet.
Everyone stared at it for a few moments.
“Floor cake!” King exclaimed. “The best kind of food!”
Nobody knew who laughed first, but it wasn’t long before everyone had smiles on their faces. Now, it didn’t seem to matter how human they made her party.
“Thanks, guys.” Luz said once she’d calmed down. “I...I think I needed this.”
“Any time, Luz.” Eda smiled.
Luz giggled and looked towards the stained windows of the Owl House. She could already hear Lilith and King arguing with Hooty again, probably to put them down, but it was tuned out.
The sky was completely dark now. And though the sky back home looked different than in the Boiling Isles, Luz couldn’t help but wonder if her mom was looking up at the stars, too.
She glanced back to her friends, still not processing any of the arguments or conversations they were having as they tried to free themselves from Hooty.
Yeah, she’d be okay.
Luz smiled and relaxed. Even if her mom didn’t know where she was, Luz could at least rest assured that she’d make it home, eventually. And she’d have real friends helping her out.
‘Keep that light on until I get there, mamá.’ She silently asked.
‘Te veré pronto.’
Babysitting a Human: 101
“Hi, little one. And who might you be?”, the baby giggled and reached for her green hair but she leaned back, instead offering her necklace. In an instant, the baby was fascinated by the gem and grabbed that instead, making Amity chuckle, “Aren’t you a sweet one.” Through a potion, Luz is aged down to a baby and Amity luckily is at the right place, at the right time. Shenanigans ensue.
I literally just wanted to write Luz as a baby and Amity babysitting her. It's that simple sometimes xD I also just wanted to explore Amity being a confused teenager who's good with babies, because in "Lost in Language" she definitely seemed to handle the small kids really well! Please have as much fun reading as I had writing this story, and have a wonderful day <3 3laxx~
---
“Ah, Minty green! You came at the perfect time, actually!”
Amity was almost offended by the nickname Eda had given her on the fly if it hadn’t irritated her more that the wild witch seemed to be on the way to leave.
“What-”, she already wanted to ask, but the witch just wrapped her arm around her shoulders and began pushing her towards the Owl House.
“I actually gotta run real quick to do-… Business. You gotta watch Luz. Okay, bye!”
The teen just merely managed to furrow her eyebrows as King jumped past her, onto Eda’s staff, and the witch began flying off.
“Wait! What do you even mean?!”
But Eda already waved and flew off, yelling something that Amity couldn’t quite make out, something like “Don’t let her die, will be back tomorrow!”
This was getting weirder and weirder by the second. Amity huffed, pulling her bag tighter around her and furrowing her eyebrows at the house. The door was open, and that bird tube was doing something inside, which involved very questionable sounds.
Did she even want to go inside now?
She had known becoming friends with Luz was going to be messy and weird and definitely sometimes out of her comfort zone, but she had just wanted to come by to give Luz back her copy of The Good Witch Azura novel three since she had claimed she had lost hers and just wanted to spend time with Luz outside of their weekly book club meetings.
But now she suddenly wasn’t sure how urgent this was. She could give her the book back tomorrow, too, right?
Eda had just talked nonsense, and Amity wouldn’t – absolutely wouldn’t – get involved with Hooty. She could just go, right? Huffing, she fastened the strap on her bag again and nodded, turning away from the Owl House. She had no obligation to stay after Eda had just recruited her for-… Something. Watching Luz?
Amity rolled her eyes. Luz was older than her, by a few months, and could very much look after herself. Well, not always, but she didn’t need a babysitter, and especially not Amity. Shaking the blush off her face, she started leaving again, when suddenly, she heard Hooty doing some noise and a baby crying.
This made her stop dead in her tracks and she could feel her heart jumping at that.
Eda didn’t have a baby. Luz didn’t either. She knew Eda had babysat the Bat Queen’s children once, but their screaming sounded different. This hadn’t been a demon cry or whatever else.
Slowly, Amity turned back to the house and slowly approached it.
Whatever was inside, Hooty was probably not the best company for that thing. She already cursed herself for investigating, but Titan, she couldn’t just leave a child alone with that bird tube.
Hooty just retreated when she entered through the door, talking to himself in his annoying, high-pitched voice.
“Geez, okay! I get it, you don’t want to play ‘Catch the mouse’, hoot!”
Before the bird could even start to talk to Amity upon noticing her, she shot him a glare that was enough to make him close the door after her. Now she heard it clearly.
A whimper sounded through the room, then a cry. She furrowed her eyebrows at that and put down her bag, before looking around.
Sure enough, there was a crib. Amity didn’t know Eda and Luz would be babysitting again.
“Luz? Are you here?”
Nobody answered so Amity assumed Luz was still upstairs. Why would she leave a baby alone here, though? Luz was the most caring person she knew, and while still being a child herself most of the time, she would never just leave a baby in Hooty’s care.
Carefully, she approached the crib and looked inside, only to stumble back with a red face, landing on her rear and stretching out her arms in a fighting motion. This had just activated her fight-or-flight reflex.
The baby inside the crib looked exactly like Luz. Had she missed the last thirteen months or something? And wasn’t Luz a little young to be a mother? And-… Did that mean Luz wasn’t single?
Amity breathed for a moment, then she got back up again, her thoughts running a mile an hour. This couldn’t be, right. Was that Luz’s little sibling? But how would they have come here? The same way Luz had managed to end up here? Amity knew it involved a portal.
If Luz had a little sibling, though, why bring them here?
She once again peered into the crib and sure enough, there was a little baby, not much older than four months maybe, but definitely not a year yet. It was crying, kicking helplessly, and crying.
Motherly instincts, that the teenager hadn’t known had existed inside her, suddenly took over. She reached inside and softly cradled the baby in her arms, then she lifted it up and began bopping it, helplessly looking around.
She was in this house now, alone, with a baby and a dumb bird tube, and Eda was apparently leaving for the entire night? She had babysat before, sure, Boscha’s little sister for example while her friend had wanted to go to some party for older kids. And she managed the children at the library every week. But this was a little rushed.
Huffing, she took the baby with her and started exploring upstairs. She knew where Luz’s room was, so she went there first while keeping the baby close, but her friend was nowhere to be found. Nor was anyone else.
After searching through every accessible room – some she didn’t want to open, who knew what Eda was hiding behind closed doors – she returned to the living room and sat down on the couch with the baby in her lap, furrowing her eyebrows.
“Hi, little one. And who might you be?”, the baby giggled and reached for her green hair but she leaned back, instead offering her necklace. In an instant, the baby was fascinated by the gem and grabbed that instead, making Amity chuckle, “Aren’t you a sweet one.”
The gem was round and too big to fit in its mouth so she didn’t mind the baby playing with her necklace while she tried to figure out what she was doing here.
“What are we gonna do now, little baby? I know how to babysit, but I don’t even know who you are and why you’re here. You do look a little like Luz, though.”
Squinting her eyes, she watched the baby in her arms. She knew that face. That baby looked so damn similar to the teenager she knew from school.
But it couldn’t be Luz herself, right?
Eda had told her to watch Luz and she had thought that was weird. Was it possible that-…?
The baby looked up to her and once again tried to reach her hair while Amity watched it closely.
“Luz?”
The baby seemed to listen up at that. Amity’s eyes widened.
“Oh my Titan, Luz, is it actually you?!”
In an instant, the baby began sniffling again at Amity raising her voice, so she quickly got back up again and started rocking the baby, Luz, to try and soothe her.
“Shh, shh, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to get loud. Is it really you, though?”
The baby slowly stopped crying again and Amity’s heart began racing. That meant she was holding her crush in her arms right now. Her crush turned into a baby.
Luz brabbled something and once again reached the gem around Amity’s neck, starting to drool all over it, but Amity couldn’t care.
Eda had to explain some things to her once she got back.
Oh Titan, when she got back. She had said she’d only be back in the morning. It was afternoon right now, which meant Amity would have to watch over Luz for at least eighteen hours?!
Except if she called Willow.
She knew her former friend was incredibly good with babies, she supposed that came with understanding plants so much. It wasn’t that much of a difference after all. Don’t drop, don’t squish, feed regularly, and keep it clean and free of bugs.
Right, what was she going to feed Luz, anyway?! Did human babies have some special things they couldn’t eat? Oh Titan, this was going to be a nightmare. Amity didn’t even know if Luz was allergic to anything.
A squeal let her listen up again and she realized Luz had tried to get her attention for quite a while now, while she had paced through the living room.
“Yes? What do you want?”, again, the baby reached for her hair and Amity rolled her eyes, “Fine. But if you tug, I’ll never let you touch it again.”
The tiny Luz went quiet at Amity’s hair starting to fall over her small baby hand, and she clumsily tried grasping some strands, making Amity giggle.
“You like that?”
Out of instinct, she leaned down to the baby and shook her head, tickling Luz with her hair hanging into her tiny face. The baby squealed in joy and kicked joyfully, making Amity laugh as well.
“You know, you’re actually super cute like that. I mean, you’re also cute when you’re all grown up, but this is another level of cute.”
The baby Luz once again giggled and squealed while Amity continued shaking her hair into her face until the baby grabbed a handful of her strands and ripped with all its might.
With a yelp, Amity stumbled back but tried to keep her balance, not to drop the baby.
“Ouch! Ouch ouch ouch, let go, let go! That hurts, stop!”
Untangling Luz’s tiny hand from her hair proved to be more difficult than she had anticipated and she grumbled when she actually saw a few ripped-out hairs in the baby’s hand.
“That wasn’t nice.”, she chastised Luz, pouting, “Don’t do that again.”
The baby was too engrossed with the hair she had ripped out, though. Amity merely rolled her eyes, then she decided to create a war plan.
First, she had to find out what human babies ate and if Eda had anything here that she could feed Luz. Secondly, she would have to look for some diapers, because while it looked like Luz was wearing one in her onesie, she wasn’t sure how much longer it was going to hold. Amity already grimaced at that thought. But a baby wouldn’t be able to hold it in for eighteen hours, right? And she supposed Luz wouldn’t remember anything anyway. Plus, it was probably less traumatizing to wash Luz than to endure her full diaper until the next morning.
Carefully, she set the baby down in her crib and entered the kitchen next door, to see if Eda got anything edible.
After a minute of searching, Luz began to feel lonely and Amity couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
“I’m right here, Luz, everything’s alright! My Titan, how did your mother raise you if you couldn’t even stand being alone for five minutes?”
The baby seemed to calm down at Amity talking so she just continued monologuing while continuing through the cupboards and finding some troubling things.
“I mean, I’m literally just next door. You can relax, promise, I’ll be right back. I just need to find something that you can have as dinner and breakfast. Does Eda even have milk around here? Wait, do babies like you eat anything already, or do you just drink milk? How am I supposed to know, I’m fourteen!”
At that point, she’d probably have to call an adult who had ideally already raised a baby, but nobody came to mind. Except, yes, her old nanny! Her mother hadn’t done much of the raising, just a lot of the chastising, so her nanny was probably the closest she’d get to any helpful advice. Summoning her scroll phone, she walked back into the living room and propped herself up on the crib so Luz could see her and play some more with her necklace, something she had apparently grown very fascinated with.
Dialing her nanny’s number, she held the scroll phone to her ear and waited for the witch to accept the call while watching the tiny baby drooling all over the gem. A small smile grew on her lips.
This was actually kinda nice.
It was sweet to see Luz like this, so young and absolutely fascinated by everything, much like her teenage self, just a lot simpler.
“Hello, Amity!”, her nanny answered the phone and Amity heard the telltale cry of babies in the background, making her grimace.
“Hi, Nana!”, she greeted her old nanny and rubbed over her face, trying her best to formulate the following story as harmlessly as possible, “Uhm, what do little human babies eat when they’re maybe, four months old?”
The line remained silent for a little, until Luz squealed at the gem, making Amity flinch.
“… Why are you with a human baby?”, her nanny asked and Amity grimaced.
“That’s a long story that nobody needs to know about. In short, I’m babysitting. She’s four months old and liked to pull my hair. So, what do they eat?”
Her nanny remained quiet for a second again and Amity started fidgeting.
“Well, I suppose human babies aren’t that different from witch babies. If the baby can sit, and seems interested in solids, you can feed that to it.”, she explained and Amity nodded, making a note to test if Luz could sit already.
“Okay, got it. Can I call you again if I need more advice? I’m kinda alone with the baby right now and the uh-… Mother didn’t leave me any hints.”, Amity pulled a face at calling Eda Luz’s mother, even if she supposed that they had grown quite close ever since Luz arrived here.
“Yes, I might just be a little busy sometimes. Is there anything else that you’re not telling me? You know I notice if you’re lying.”, her nanny prodded and she knew that she just wanted some details on the human baby.
Amity huffed.
“Don’t worry, everything is fine. If I’m in a house that’s not exactly made for a baby, though, and can’t find baby food, what do I do then? Because I can’t really leave.”
“Well, I could come over an-”
“I’ll just mash something up, thank you Nana, byeee!”, Amity panicked and hung up, breathing quickly. If her old nanny had known she was in the Owl House, with a teenager turned baby, she’d be done for. Her parents would know faster than she could blink.
Luz meanwhile looked up to her and reached for her hair again, but Amity scowled at her.
“No, you lost all hair privileges.”
Baby Luz started tearing up so Amity sighed and rolled her eyes before lifting her out of her crib again and starting to bounce her.
“Let’s see what we can do together, hm? There should be something safe around here that we can mess with. Maybe some plushies. Didn’t you tell me of King’s army once? I bet he has some plushies. Or maybe you have some! We can look through your stuff and see what we can find.”
The baby kicked a little and Amity took that as a yes.
“Let’s go then, we can hopefully find something to keep you busy. And I can read The Good Witch Azura to you!”, at that name, the tiny baby squealed and Amity giggled while cradling her safely and starting to go upstairs again, “Oh you remember her, huh? I should’ve figured, who could ever forget Azura?”
Sure enough, she found a little plush in Luz’s stuff, and it seemed like Luz was recognizing it because she reached for it, so Amity put her down on her back on top of her sleep cocoon – Luz had explained to her what that was once but she had forgotten again, in any case, it was soft enough for a baby to lie on it – and gave her the toy while sitting down next to her, smiling when baby Luz started taking the plush into her mouth as well.
“Don’t worry, I’ll wash that for you once you’re back to normal again.”, she smirked and propped herself up on an arm, leaning over Luz, “Aren’t you a cute one, hm?”
The tiny baby giggled at her and kicked, then she reached out to brush over her soft baby skin, humming.
“You were so adorable as a baby! And you already had your big, brown eyes. I bet your mom could tell you’d be pretty someday.”
Luz laughed again and lost the toy she had been drooling over, making Amity fetch it for her and give it back, watching Luz’s tiny fingers clumsily grasping the fur of the plush. A warm feeling rose in Amity’s chest while she watched the baby playing like this, and she couldn’t help but smile.
“Maybe I’ll have a tiny baby like you someday when I’m older and ready. And maybe she’ll look like you.”, daydreaming about her crush wasn’t uncommon for Amity, even drawing fanart of her and Luz and losing herself in fantasies about them marrying someday, but she hadn’t even once thought about having a baby with Luz. She supposed her teenage hormones and developing motherly instincts connected the baby in front of her to a faraway future that could maybe be a possibility.
In an instant, though, Amity became beet red when thinking about having a baby with Luz. That would mean they’d be married, which would mean they had a relationship before that, which would, in turn, mean that Amity would confess her feelings to her.
Which would not ever happen, nope!
She spluttered then she turned away and shook her head, listening to Luz still brabbling on and telling the plush some serious stories, having rolled over by now and holding it in front of her face.
Her tiny knees bumped against Amity’s hips and she looked back.
She had to admit, it was a nice little daydream. Nothing wrong with a little fantasy like that.
“You’re so tiny…”, she giggled, her blush fading when she took one of Luz’s feet and tickled the baby through its sock, laughing when she looked up to her irritated.
“Oh, come on, your mom tickled you before I’m sure!”
The baby gurgled and giggled then when she tickled her again and left the plush to try and grab at Amity’s face. The teen reached up to tie all her hair up to a high ponytail, which still left out a few strands, but way less to give the baby any chance to pull on them again, and lifted Luz up to sit her down on her lap against her thighs, leaning in a little so they were close.
Baby Luz reached out to her nose and grabbed it, making the witch laugh and blow a tiny raspberry on the baby’s wrist.
“What’re you trying to do with my nose, steal it?”, she asked and Luz laughed, flailing, before patting her cheek and reaching for Amity’s nose again, causing her to laugh.
She sat back a little to lean against the couch table and pull her knees a little closer, so Luz could sit a little more upright. Her tiny legs were crossed over Amity’s stomach and while she held onto her knee with one arm to keep the position, she reached down to grab Luz’s foot again and slightly shake it, successfully diverting the baby’s attention from grabbing at her nose.
“You’re actually quite easy to handle. Boscha’s little sister is sweet and all, but she does learn a lot from her older sister. Sometimes she’s a real handful. You’re just curious, aren’t you?”
Luz tried grabbing at her hand which still softly shook her foot, then the baby looked up again and grabbed Amity’s upper lip instead, blinking at the sight when she uncovered Amity’s teeth.
The girl laughed again but permitted the baby to continue, opening her mouth for her.
“An wha’re yu trayna do now?”, she slurred, her mouth opened, when the baby searched and lifted her second hand to grab Amity’s lower teeth, inspecting them with very careful, pointed movements. She wouldn’t have thought Luz to be so coordinated while being so clumsy.
The baby hiccupped, still tapping around on her teeth and discovering her fangs, before Amity laughed and closed her mouth, very softly biting down on her fingers and closing her lips as well. Luz recoiled and pulled her fingers back, obviously surprised by Amity doing that, but she quickly found delight in that. Amity opened her mouth back up again and Luz made it a game to grab at her teeth while Amity softly tried catching her, playfully snapping at her.
Luz laughed and laughed, so much so that she really started hiccupping now, until Amity stopped and chuckled as well, but dodged all of the baby’s attempts with her hand, catching both of them on Luz’s belly while looking at her.
“Luz, are you hungry?”
But Luz wasn’t done playing yet. Instead, she freed her tiny hands and once again reached for Amity’s face, this time her cheeks. Before she could pinch her skin, though, Amity quickly blew some air into her cheeks and the small baby laughed when she let it escape again.
They continued playing for a little while, Luz exploring and discovering Amity’s face thoroughly, until the teen was not only covered in her own drool but also Luz’s since she just couldn’t stop taking her little fists in her own mouth all over again.
“Okay, that’s enough now, you had your fun. I wanna wash my face.”
She lifted the baby off her lap and set her down, giving her back the plush, before going to the kitchen and turning on the sink to rub all over her face, before furrowing her eyebrows at the sink’s depth.
A baby could comfortably sit in there.
Amity smiled. She knew exactly how she was going to wash Luz now, without being embarrassed too much – hopefully.
Returning to the living room, she checked on Luz who was animatedly telling her plush something very important – she supposed, at least, Luz was fixating the toy and brabbling in one go – so she went back inside to get some fruit and milk Eda had luckily kept around and begun preparing what she thought was best for a baby’s meal.
First, she made sure to remove all the seeds and skin, then she mushed it the best she could so she had a soft goo, and put some milk into it, to make it a little more fluid so Luz could eat it. She supposed that should be enough to feed a baby, for a little bit at least. She was kinda left alone here without any proper meal plan, so she just made do of what she could find.
After preparing the meal and finding the tiniest little spoon to fit in Luz’s mouth, she grabbed the jar in which she had created the meal and carried it back to the living room to find Luz trying to shuffle away from the sleeping bag, her little legs kicking and her hands moving and working while she lifted her head, making Amity chuckle. “And where do you think you’re going?”
The baby looked up at her and huffed, trying to move again, but Amity just picked Luz up and set her back down on her lap like before, letting her lean against her thighs to feed her.
Luz was active and interested enough in the dinner Amity had made for her so she supposed it was fine.
As Amity discovered shortly, though, Luz was a little too active. At the first spoon, she knew this was going to be a pain. After scooping some up, she put the spoon on the baby’s lips and opened her own mouth, for Luz to imitate her, but the baby was too engrossed with other things, like staring at Amity and flailing.
“Luz, you gotta open your mouth.”, she prodded, but she kept her lips firmly shut, “Please? Pretty please?”
She tried letting the baby taste the fruity mix a little, and it worked after she had managed to push the spoon’s tip through her lips. Suddenly opening her mouth wide, Luz allowed her to push the spoon inside. The first three to five spoons were not a problem.
But then, Luz discovered, she could also spit the food back out again. Which was apparently a lot more fun than just letting it disappear.
Amity had just giggled at imitating a griffin flying the spoon into Luz’s mouth, and already scooped up the next one, when a kinda warm goopy mess landed on her arm. The teen squinted her eyes and slowly looked back to Luz, who still had her mouth opened, drool connecting to the griffin spoon’s content that now sat on Amity’s arm. She huffed at the baby.
“I thought we had an agreement, Luz.”, she pointed at Luz quickly closing her mouth again, then she helpfully pointed at the slime on Amity’s arm. At that, Amity couldn’t help but chuckle, then she wiped it with a tissue she had smartly remembered to bring as well.
“I know feeding a baby is messy. But seriously, you didn’t need to spit it on me. You have plenty of room to spit it on yourself!”, Amity suggested while spreading the cloth on her chest now so her clothes wouldn’t suffer at least.
The baby on her lap merely whined, then she managed to get the next spoon inside of her mouth, nodding when the baby swallowed.
“That’s right. You gotta eat, you know, to become tall, and lanky, and the nerd I know you to be. The nerdiest dweeb, with your not at all weak nerd arms.”, she softly pinched the baby’s arm and Luz giggled, making Amity’s heart go warm again.
“You’re such a cheerful baby. I seriously haven’t met a baby that giggly yet.”
Luz patted on the tissue Amity had spread on herself, brabbling something, while Amity tried the next spoon again. This time, a noise distracted Luz, though, and she turned her head when Amity just tried to put the spoon in her mouth. Oh, this was going to be messy.
Now that the first interest in eating had faded, Luz was not going to be focused anymore. But she knew she’d have to wash the baby after this anyway, so she just continued trying to feed her.
Until Luz also discovered that she could play with her food, much to Amity’s dismay.
“No, Luz, do-… Don’t spit it out! Damnit!”, the baby had already dropped the load and began mushing it on her onesie, making Amity pull up her eyebrows, “You decide to be messy now, hm? Okay then. That just makes the bath last longer, I hope you know that.”
The baby looked up to her, but obviously, she didn’t recognize the word. Instead, she connected two other dots.
With her fruit-goopy hand, Luz now patted her cheek. Amity wrinkled her nose at the stickiness.
“Really? You want me to wash, too?”
The baby giggled while the teen leaned back and managed to get her hand off of her cheek. Luckily, she turned her attention back to the dirty onesie again, and Amity tried to give her the next spoon but Luz grew skeptical, suddenly. Rolling her eyes, she attracted the baby’s attention and showed her a spoon, but her lips stayed closed this time.
“You’ve been eating it the whole time and now you don’t want it anymore?”, Luz’s response was clear. Huffing, Amity ate the spoonful herself and looked at the baby in a demonstration before exaggerating on her reaction.
“Mmmh! That tastes so good! Let me have another!”, she watched the baby staring when she took another spoon in her mouth, almost giggling at Luz’s eyebrows furrowing, “That’s so tasty!”
Just when Amity wanted to take another spoon – it really didn’t taste bad at all – Luz clumsily reached for her wrist and whined, wanting to have the spoon to herself. Smirking, Amity gave it to her and smiled when the baby swallowed. Jealousy about food always worked.
Well, it worked for a bite, until Luz was distracted by something else again, making Amity grow exasperated when she lowered the spoon.
“Luz.”, the baby still tried to reach her necklace, causing the witch to lift an eyebrow, “Luz? C’mon, a little more, still. Usually, you’re really hungry.”
The baby whined and grabbed at the necklace, but Amity put it down her shirt and tried feeding Luz again. However, the baby was too smart for her. She leaned forward and grabbed Amity’s collar, making her yelp at the dirty little hands smearing fruit goo on her clothes, then Luz pulled the shirt back and tried reaching for the necklace again.
Amity groaned, trying to get the baby’s little hand out of her cleavage, while not losing grip of the spoon.
“Luz! You can play later, stop-”, she finally nudged the baby’s hands away from her clothes and rolled her eyes at the marks she had left on her collar, before softly guiding her to lean back against her thighs, shaking her head at the baby, “Don’t-… Do that again. Even if you’re a baby right now, that’s not acceptable. Got it?”
Ugh, she already sounded like her mother.
Luz pouted and she could tell she was about to burst into tears, making Amity gulp.
“Aw, it’s okay. I’ll let you play after you eat some more! We can share a spoon if that’d make you happy!”, she made some exaggerated movements to distract Luz, and luckily, the baby bought into it when she threatened to eat a spoon again, making her catch her wrist again and lead the spoon back to her mouth. Amity giggled when she softly brushed over Luz’s temple, humming.
“I’m just glad you’re not super small, like, a newborn. It would’ve become so much harder caring for you then.”, the baby giggled at her and since she had managed half the glass, Amity supposed Luz was good to go.
That meant bathing time.
Amity grimaced already, but there was no way around it. Luz was covered in sticky fruit goo and she supposed this was a normal babysitting job she had to do.
Oh no.
But she couldn’t bail out. This was a baby, she couldn’t wash herself yet, and it wasn’t embarrassing at all! Luz would probably not remember anything about this and she had to do it.
She had to.
Amity got up and cradled Luz in her arms, not minding the sticky fingers now playing with her shirt again, and grabbed the jar to bring it back to the kitchen. She spread a towel on the table and put Luz on it, always keeping an eye on the baby so that she wouldn’t roll off, while closing the container with a lid and putting it in the fridge, before clogging the sink to fill it just a little with warm water. Luz tried rolling over but Amity held her back and chuckled.
“Can’t have you on your back now. You’ll just be up to shenanigans.”, tiny Luz giggled, making Amity affectionately roll her eyes, “Does Eda keep soap anywhere?”
The baby huffed and giggled again as a response, still trying to turn over while Amity now stepped closer and caught her between her arms, propping herself up on the table before leaning down and blowing a mock raspberry on the baby’s belly that was still covered by the onesie.
Luz squealed and patted Amity’s head, making the teen chuckle.
“I’m not gonna get home clean, hm? But you’re too sweet for me to be mad at you. Now, c’mon, let’s get some soap for you.”
She grabbed the baby to search for soap upstairs, and when she found some that smelled like Luz usually smelled like when she was fresh from the shower, she walked down again. The baby had insisted to hold the soap, and all the while Amity made sure she wouldn’t put it in her mouth, then came the moment Amity had dreaded.
She put Luz down on the counter and sighed.
“Okay, here we go. I mean, you’re just a little baby, but I sure hope you won’t remember this.”, Luz giggled and kicked, making Amity smile, “You’re a doofus, you know that? Always making me smile like that, even if you’re a baby.”
After opening the first button, it wasn’t as bad as Amity had thought.
Slipping into busy work, she opened up the onesie and pulled it out from underneath Luz, then she took off her little tiny socks – they were just round and Amity had to cry a little at that – and removed the diaper to discard it, before slowly setting Luz down in the sink. The baby recoiled at the feeling of water at first but quickly got used to it, even finding some joy in splashing around. Amity supposed she would turn up at home clean after all, if Luz continued soaking her like that.
“Wait, hold still, I gotta wash you actually! This is not a swimming lesson!”
Luz laughed and squealed and overall made Amity completely forget this was her naked crush sitting in a sink. She had all her hands full to somehow contain this little bundle of joy. Because without fail, Luz managed to be even more cheerful when in water.
After soaping her in and taking care to scrub all the lunch off of the baby and keeping her eyes soap-free, she washed Luz off again, unclogged the sink, and lifted the baby out with a towel, drying her off while cradling her.
And again, there was the smile Amity couldn’t contain when Luz laughed and flailed like this, moving so much that she sometimes worried she’d drop her.
She hadn’t ever dreamed up that Luz would be even more energetic than she was usually as her teenage self, but as it seemed, baby Luz was absolutely eager to prove her wrong in every way she could.
Laughing, she cradled Luz closer and trapped her tiny arms and legs in the towel to dry off her face, softly rubbing over her forehead and temples. Just when she brushed down to Luz’s cheek, the tiny baby began suckling. They both looked at each other surprised, then Amity giggled as she tried that again, making Luz start to work her tongue and cheeks, swallowing multiple times. Amity smirked.
“Now I can at least make you eat. That’s good to know.”, she smugly stated and the baby giggled again once she stopped brushing over her cheek, trying to free herself from the towel, so Amity carefully put her down on the table and dried off the rest of her, before grabbing a makeshift diaper Eda had apparently still crafted, wrapping it around Luz and keeping her lying on the table so she couldn’t turn.
“Luz, just let me dress you, it’s a little chilly, and – where did the onesie go I just saw? Wait, there was one, I just don’t know-”, furrowing her eyebrows, Amity looked all over the table, then back to the sink. No onesie to be found, just the old, sticky one. But she could’ve sworn she had just seen it.
Letting go of Luz, she went to bend down under the table, then she quickly jogged back to the living room to grab the onesie off the coffee table, before running back, so Luz wouldn’t fall off the table.
Instead of being met with a catastrophe, though, she watched Luz turning over and getting on all fours to start crawling towards her. Well, shifting towards her, Luz still didn’t exactly figure out how crawling worked so she was doing more of a shuffling kinda pushy motion, to get where she wanted to be. Amity had to chuckle at that.
“Don’t wanna put on clothes, hm?”
She propped her arms up on the wooden surface of the table and put her chin down as well, watching the baby shuffling its way towards her. She giggled when Luz reached her and softly slapped her hand on her nose, then she leaned back again and scooped her up, minding her head when she turned her over and placed a raspberry on her belly.
“Not on my watch, tiny Luz!”, the baby giggled and squealed loudly, then she felt the baby’s hands on her cheeks and raspberried her again, “Okay, let’s get you dressed, hm?”
The baby interestedly watched the onesie she had found, then she huffed when Amity spread it on the towel that she had dried Luz in, and put her down. In an instant, the baby wailed.
Rolling her eyes, Amity groaned and propped her elbows up next to the baby to wall her in, getting closer with her face while she softly rubbed Luz’s temples. The wails became less until she was just sniffling at the sudden cuddles, then she pouted again and threatened to blow.
“Luz, it’s kinda chilly, I just wanna put some clothes on you, okay?”, Amity tried consoling and negotiating, but the baby wouldn’t hear any of it. As soon as she felt the witchling trying to sneakily wrestle her tiny arm into the sleeve, she began crying again. Sighing, Amity nodded, then she straightened back up again.
“Alright, tell you what. You’ll play for a little bit and I’ll prepare a surprise for you. And as soon as you get cold, I get to dress you, okay?”
Luz was still crying, so Amity lifted her off the counter and carried her back to the living room to place her on her sleeping bag, then she made a big ‘oooh’ and ‘aaaah’ sound while pulling up Luz’s plush, which seemed to distract the baby enough not to protest any further. Amity giggled.
“See? There you go. Have a little fun with them, I’ll be right back.”, she bopped the completely indulged baby on the nose and went upstairs, to go into Luz’s room. Well, honestly, she didn’t exactly feel comfortable with going through her things, especially since she was a baby, but she hoped what she planned would convince Luz to put on some clothes. She didn’t wanna hand her back to Eda sick, after all.
To her big luck, what she searched for was lying in the open. She had remembered right, from bringing the sleeping bag down! And she didn’t have to go through Luz’s things and find some possibly flustering things. For the first time, she thanked Luz for being so messy sometimes.
Running back down with the surprise in her hands, she met the baby trying to roll off the sleeping bag again and chuckled to herself, leaning against the doorframe and crossing her arms to watch her for a moment while she didn’t know she was back yet.
Luz finally succeeded to get past the almost impossible barrier of the slightly higher seam around the edge of the sleeping bag, and got to all fours, facing away from Amity. She started shuffling across the carpet, then, her hips still down on the floor and her little legs kicking along the ground, to shuffle to the direction where she wanted to be. Amity smirked when she watched the baby exploring and reaching out to stuff like a leg of the couch table or a little pill of wool off the carpet, but when she started reaching for a hissing and snapping book next to the couch table Amity decided that was enough exploring for now. Moving quickly, she scooped the baby up and pulled her away from the book about necromancy, then she pulled up her eyes at the halfhearted protests from her friend, before sitting down on the sleeping bag with her.
“Yes, I know, I’m so evil. But look! I got something for you!”
She got into the same position again as before when she had fed her, finding holding the baby with her legs while sitting against the couch very relaxing. Especially since Luz could watch her and she could make sure the active baby wouldn’t escape.
Giggling, she attracted the attention of the baby before pulling out what she had found in Luz’s room. It was the cat hoodie that her grown-up friend loved to wear. Instant recognition went over the baby’s face and she grabbed for it, feeling the cloth. Amity almost had the feeling she not only recognized it but also that a slight hint of older Luz went over her young face before she turned back to the drooling little baby by trying to put the fabric into her mouth. Quickly, Amity pulled the hoodie away and chuckled, shaking her head. It must’ve been wishful thinking that Luz could somehow wake up. She supposed the potion Luz was on not only aged up and down but also moved time in the vessel of the person drinking it. Thus, no wearing off.
She smiled at the baby, then she held up the cropped hoodie.
“Let’s make a deal, okay? I put on this, because I’m chilly, and you put on your onesie. Your feet are cold already!”
The baby did not understand what she was inquiring, but she reacted so adorably when Amity tickled her little feet, laughing and kicking. Then, the teen leaned back.
“See, okay? Getting dressed isn’t as bad!”, she opened the hoodie and a full nose of Luz’s scent hit her. Kinda like lemons. She almost got dizzy about putting on some of her crush’s clothes, but she had a baby to convince. That was more important.
Amity pulled the hoodie down over her face and thought she might faint from being flustered, but as soon as she peeked through the collar, she saw the expectant face of the baby. This did it. Pulling down the cloth, she laughed, then she clasped her hand around the chubby cheeks and squealed.
“Peek-a-boo!”, she exclaimed and the baby immediately laughed and squealed in excitement. When Amity pulled up the hoodie over her head and revealed the cat ears, Luz wasn’t stoppable. She giggled and squealed all the way as Amity dressed her, occasionally playing with the little cat ears on her head, then she lifted the baby up and let her little hand play with the ears. Luz was super excitable over things like these, which hadn’t changed when turning into a baby.
After a while, though, Luz got a little fussy and Amity realized she was tired. Right, babies needed to nap more often, because their little brains got overstimulated. Humming, Amity scooped up the baby and carried her over to her crib, but the sight of the bed just made Luz cry more. Sighing, the teen stopped.
“But you gotta sleep now, I can tell you’re tired. C’mon, just a little.”
Luz full-on began wailing when she lowered her down into the crib so she deadpanned and lifted her back up in her arms, sighing when she began bopping the baby and calming her down. Soon, Luz snuggled up against her shoulder and began dozing, so Amity waited until her eyes were closed and tried putting her back in her crib but Luz wouldn’t have it. Sniffling again, she looked up to Amity out of big, teary eyes and the witchling quickly lifted her back up.
“Okay, fine. You can sleep in your sleeping bag. But no fussing anymore, okay?”, she kneeled on the floor and handled the sleepy, cranky baby carefully, lowering her down into the sleeping bag, then she smiled and placed her hand on the baby’s tummy to settle her down, “There you go. And now we close these big eyes of yours and sleep, okay? It’s just a nap.”
Luz pouted again and Amity could imagine what she wanted.
“You want us to snuggle?”
Since the baby couldn’t understand or answer, she lifted her up again and shuffled them both into the sleeping bag, resting Luz next to her and rubbing her tummy.
“There we go, okay? You go sleep while I call Willow. Is that a deal?”
Baby Luz whined softly before closing her eyes and huffing, then she lifted her tiny fists to place them next to her head and touched Amity’s ear with one. When she tried to move away, the baby started whining again so she sighed and let Luz touch her ear, despite heavily blushing, and allowed her to softly grab it to fall asleep. She also wouldn’t allow her to remove her hand so she had to lie kind of arms crossed on her back when Luz finally fell asleep. The baby’s hands went slack and Amity could relax, turning to her side and smiling when she watched baby Luz. She was adorable, honestly.
With her being so hyperactive, she hadn’t had much chance to really look at her, so she had the time now when Luz didn’t move all the time.
Her face was so small and chubby. Amity almost squealed at that, but she kept quiet. Smiling to herself, she reached out to softly brush over the bridge of the baby’s nose, humming when she made her breathe slower through that. She seemed to like it.
Only after exploring Luz’s tiny baby face thoroughly, she summoned her scroll phone and took a picture that she saved in her heart, and then she tapped in Willow’s number. Immediately, when it started dialing, she saw herself on her phone. She had started a video call. Well, might as well show Willow what was going on. Maybe it’d be easier to understand then.
She turned the phone away from Luz, though, only focused the screen on her lying on the floor, then she sighed and breathed through. She wanted help so badly, being alone with a baby had not been on her schedule and she had to go home at some time. Willow’s dads were much more understanding, maybe they’d let her come and stay the night with Luz.
The call dialed for a while, then it was accepted and Willow looked at her with a question mark written all over her face.
“Hey, Amity? What’s up?”
Grimacing, the witchling rubbed her neck, then she sighed.
“Uhm… I’m in a little bit of a situation here. So… How does ‘babysitting at the Owl House’ sound to you?”, she grinned helplessly and Willow looked right through her.
“Highly suspicious. What did you do?”, she narrowed her eyes, huffing at her behavior. Amity groaned.
“Willow, I gotta get home, my parents are gonna kill me if I stay past curfew but someone’s gotta watch her.”, she whined. At that, Willow rolled her eyes and shook her head.
“You’re making no sense, Amity. Watch who? Why babysitting?”, she asked and Amity grimaced before tilting her phone so the tiny baby Luz came into view. Willow stayed silent for a second, her mouth and eyes wide open, then she looked back at Amity who was still half on the screen, “What-… Did you-… Do?!”
Sighing, Amity turned the phone back to her and shook her head, groaning.
“Luz was aged down to a baby. I don’t know what happened, but Eda left me alone with her to watch her until tomorrow morning. I don’t even know what I’m doing!”, she groaned again, “Help mee!”
Willow’s face looked even more shocked.
“Wait, that was Luz?!”, she asked incredulously and Amity deadpanned.
“Who did you think I was babysitting?!”, she asked and Willow smirked at that, making Amity blush a little, “Anyway, I can’t stay. I got to go home because my parents expect me in an hour. Can you make it?”
At that, Willow sighed and shook her head.
“I’m so sorry, Amity. I absolutely would love to babysit Luz, as weird as that sounds, but I can’t today. We’re having a family evening. I can’t just bail out on this.”
Grimacing, Amity turned to the side when Luz squirmed, then she casually reached up with her free hand and brushed over Luz’s palm, sighing. Willow smiled at that.
“Well, it looks like you got this. And Luz looks content, so.”, Willow grinned at that and Amity blushed.
“I-… I managed. I fed her and bathed her and we played a little.”, she huffed, then she pouted, “I need help, though. I don’t know what to do until tomorrow! How am I supposed to keep her happy until then?”
Willow shrugged at that, humming.
“I don’t know, honestly. I’m just fourteen.”
“Me, too!”, Amity groaned and turned to the side, nuzzling her face against Luz’s hand while curling in, feeling her knees bumping against her little slack legs. Suddenly, Willow smiled wider, almost grinning.
“Is that Luz’s hoodie you’re wearing?”, she suddenly asked and Amity couldn’t suppress a smile and a blush.
“Th-That was the only way to get her dressed again! Luz is a really hyperactive baby, I had no other choice.”
The grin her old friend gave her the impression that she very much had another choice, that this was just the option she had wanted to pick. Trying to ignore the smug witchling on the call, she sighed and crossed her eyes to look at Luz’s tiny, super soft hand.
“Willow, seriously, I gotta get home somehow. I can’t stay here but I can’t leave this baby alone. What am I supposed to do?!”
At that, her maybe-friend shrugged, then she tried a smile at her.
“Maybe try to ask your siblings? Maybe they’ll cover for you. Or ask Gus!”, both slanted their lips, “Okay, maybe don’t ask Gus. He’s maybe not the most mature babysitter.”
Groaning, Amity slumped her arm, the scroll phone vanishing behind the sleeping baby, then she sighed as she lifted it again, pouting.
“So, what do I do?”, she asked and tried her best not to snap at Willow or say something she’d regret. She did not want to disturb the fragile peace they had managed to settle on. But she also couldn’t bear the wrath of her parents.
Shrugging, Willow rubbed her cheek, then she flinched at her father calling.
“Ask the twins, I can’t help you. I’m so sorry.”, she grimaced at another call, then she sighed, “Sorry, I really gotta go now. Bye!”
Amity grumbled when she hung up. Who should she call, then?
Boscha? No, absolutely not. The rest of her gang? No, not really. They were all so immature. The detention tracks? She couldn’t expect basically strangers to watch her.
So, she was all alone.
Amity whined again, softly rubbing Luz’s palm. Should she call the twins and ask for an excuse? She didn’t want to. That’d cost her, a lot. And maybe even an explanation. She absolutely did not want to. But what other choice did she have?
Grumbling, she dialed her sister’s number. This was not going to be funny, she supposed. Well, for herself, anyways. For her siblings, it’d be an absolute treat.
It only took a moment before Emira answered and already smirked, so Amity made sure not to show the sleeping baby. Too late, she noticed she was still wearing Luz’s hoodie that Willow had already noticed. Oh, she was dead.
“Hello, mittens!”, her sister greeted and Amity groaned, “I see you’re having fun over at the Owl house. Didn’t know you and Luz were already at clothes swapping level.”
Welp, there went her dignity. If she was already this low, she could just as well cut to the point.
“Emira, I can’t make it home tonight.”
In an instant, her sister’s face changed to such a smug, shit-eating grin that Amity realized what her mistake was. Oh.
This had sounded wrong. While her sister called over Edric to ‘get a load of this’ she began blushing deeply. Which didn’t exactly help her situation.
“I-I meant-”
“Too late, mittens! But don’t you think it’s a little early for you two to be so intimate already?”, her brother now chirped and she hated every second of the twins staring at her with equally matching smirks.
“We’re not-! I mean, I’m serious, I can’t get home, I need to babysit-… King! I can’t leave King alone! Because Eda’s not here”, she scrambled, and her siblings didn’t seem to buy it. Even if she hadn’t lied about Eda being gone for the night.
“Yes, suuure, you need to babysit King. The demon. We believe every word.”, Emira winked and Amity wanted nothing more than to sink into Luz’s scented hoodie and hide forever.
“… Can you please make sure mother and father don’t notice?”, she finally built up the nerve to say, just as Edric summoned up a tiny Amity and a tiny Luz in the air between the twins, making them act all blushing and even letting them kiss chastely. She was just glad her brother wasn’t weird enough to let them kiss more. But it absolutely didn’t help, seeing the illusions giggling.
Titan, how she wished that was what she was actually doing. Casting a side glance to the sleeping baby Luz, she sighed, then she pulled up the hoodie and rolled her eyes, to hide her blazing face at least somewhat.
“Only if you admit it!”, her sister laughed and thankfully, wiped Edric’s illusions away so they wouldn’t kiss again, “Admit that you two are planning to smooch all night long!”
“We are not!”, she snapped. She wasn’t lying, at least. She and Luz would probably only play until a reasonable hour and then she’d put her down to sleep, “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Please just do it, I’ll do anything!”
As soon as she’d said it, she regretted the words coming from her mouth. Now she was in for it.
The smug grins on the twins’ faces spoke volumes.
“If you admit what you and Luz are doing tonight-…”, her sister began, and her brother finished her sentence.
“… And if you don’t snitch to our parents about our extracurricular activities until we graduate-…”, he grinned and Amity knew this was gonna have more demands to it.
“… And if you-”
“That’s enough.”, she quickly interfered and her siblings shrugged. They figured there was going to be more opportunities to blackmail their little sister.
“… Then, you can count on us to make an illusion.”, Emira nodded, as if the deal was settled, “So, spill!”
Groaning, Amity contemplated showing them the baby next to her. But that’d only cause them to use the extra hour of curfew they had because of being older to pay them a visit and tease her to no end. On the other hand, maybe that’d amuse Luz. And maybe they would actually be good with the baby.
At that, Amity scrunched her nose.
They would kill her. Telling a lie, then.
“We-… We’re watching movies.”, she began lamely and grimaced, knowing she’d have to provide juicier details to shut them up, “… A-And we’re cuddling. There you have it. Can you please bail me out now? I won’t snitch.”
Edric hummed at that.
“That isn’t enough, mittens, we know what’s up. We wanna hear it from you.”
“Get lost!”, she snapped again, this time a little louder, and didn’t notice the baby next to her flinching. A second later, her siblings saw the witchling’s eyes blow wide when a baby’s scream interrupted their call, “Gotta go, bye!”
Hanging up and throwing her scroll phone away immediately, Amity turned over to Luz and quickly took her in her arms, before rolling on her back and patting the baby’s head, sighing when she wailed and hid her face on the crook of the teen’s neck.
“Aw, Luz, I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry, it’s okay. I didn’t mean to yell. My siblings just drive me insane sometimes. I’m so sorry, please don’t be upset.”
The hug after being awaked so rudely seemed to calm her down, and she actually got quieter and only sniffled against Amity’s neck now, still cuddling closer. When she tried to lift her up and put her back down next to her, Luz only whimpered and somehow held onto her neck, not wanting to move, so Amity sighed and let her finish her nap on top of her chest.
Quickly, she dialed the twins again, on Emira’s number, and tried holding the phone so they wouldn’t see the baby snuggled up to her jaw, but the skeptical faces said everything.
“… Mittens, who did you say you’re babysitting?”, her brother finally broke the silence and Amity sighed, shaking her head.
“That’s not important. Could you maybe, pretty please, handle our parents? I really can’t leave here.”
Emira held up her finger and shook her head, actually seeming a little disgruntled that Amity would keep information from her, even lie.
“New conditions for our deal. You stop lying and tell us what’s going on.”
The teen rolled her eyes and sighed. Suited her right for letting herself get into a blackmail situation.
“Fine. But you can’t tell anyone, absolutely nobody. Or we’ll all three be toast, is that clear?”
They nodded, now super intrigued, and Amity held the phone so they could see the tiny baby curled up on her chest, the small arms wrapped around her neck while she held her close with her free hand.
In an instant, Edric cooed and got teary eyes about how adorable that baby was while Emira furrowed her eyebrows and moved closed to the screen.
“That baby is pure sugar!!”, her brother exclaimed, and her sister agreed but still skeptically glared at Amity.
“… Either Luz has a little sibling that magically got transported here from the human realm, or you two had a love child.”, she announced and Amity's face took on an unparalleled shade of red.
“We-… We did not have a love child! You do know we’re fourteen, right?!”, she tried to snap as quietly as she could, but Luz still squirmed due to being much closer to her now and she quickly shushed the baby and rubbed over her back while her brother just fell over, jokingly pretending to faint, “… That’s-… That’s actually Luz…”
At her confession, Edric’s face immediately squished back against Emira’s, their expressions of clear surprise matching. Silence followed and Amity uncomfortably squirmed. Then, Emira turned away from the phone while the background began moving, the twins seemingly walking. Oh no…
“Mother, Father, we’ll get Amity! We’ll be back by her curfew!”
“No, no, please don’t-”, she already began but her brother just took the phone from Emira when they began jogging out the front door.
“There’s no way we’re missing this, mittens.”
“Besides, that’d be the perfect opportunity to bring home your illusion inconspicuously.”, Emira reasoned and Amity couldn’t argue. Their parents liked to control her homework and ask for a magic demonstration. If she came home with the twins, they’d be able to hide her better.
“Fine. But take your time, her nap isn’t done yet!”, she tried, making Edric clasp his hand over his heart and hand the phone back to Emira who now joined in on their brother’s cooing.
“You’re so motherly, mittens! That’s downright adorable!”, she grinned and Amity grumbled. She’d never live this down, great.
“Just don’t lose your minds immediately. Or at least do it quietly. I want her to sleep as much as possible.”, at that, the twins gave three thumbs up, minus the hand holding the phone, and hung up, clearly on their way through the forest and towards the Owl House already. Sighing, Amity let the scroll phone vanish and tried relaxing again.
Wonderful. Now she’d have to endure their antics for a full hour until they’d ‘bring her home’. She just hoped they’d be gentle with Luz. She didn’t want anything dumb to happen to her just because her brother and sister liked to be super irresponsible.
“Well, looks like we’re having guests…”, she whispered and the baby huffed in her sleep. Smiling, she nuzzled her nose into Luz’s short hair and rested her lips against her head. That wasn’t a kiss, she told herself. It was just cuddling. And even if it was a kiss, Luz would most likely not remember what happened. And babies liked kisses, right?
Sighing, she wrapped her arms around the baby, resting her hands at the opposing sides of Luz’s body, and cuddled her close. This was actually super nice…
Internship Chapter 8: Day 3 - Amity
Author Note: Surprise, another Amity chapter! It made more sense to have two in a row than to split them up. This chapter was a lot of fun to write.
First Chapter Previous Chapter
____________________________________________________
As expected, after leaving the library yesterday Amity was able to buy two tickets to the abomination wrestling match. The match was the very next day, which mean they wouldn’t have to wait. Since it was the final match of the season it was almost sold out, with only some of the farthest seats left, but that was fine. Amity had bought two seats together and brought them to school in the morning.
When she arrived at school, she looked around to find Luz. She didn’t want to wait until the afternoon to tell her about the tickets, since Luz could make other plans. She also couldn’t wait to see how Luz reacted to the news.
Luckily, she saw Luz in the central area of the school, still walking to her first class. Amity called out to her, probably louder than she needed to, but it was alright since Luz stopped to look her way.
“Hey.” Luz greeted her, looking like she was trying to shift her books and free a hand to wave. The books were too heavy for her to hold in one hand, so she gave up.
“I got the tickets.” Amity blurted out as she reached her, cursing herself for not explaining first when Luz looked confused. “For abomination wrestling.” She hastily clarified.
“That’s amazing!” Luz grinned, shaking her books with excitement. Seeing her happy like this always warmed Amity’s heart.
“It’s right after school, want to meet out front?” Besides seeing how excited Luz would be, Amity also wanted to coordinate plans with her.
“I’ll see you there!” Luz almost dropped her books, trying again to free one of her hands and again, failing to do so.
Amity said goodbye as she turned to head to class. “See you later.” The two then parted ways, with plans set to meet up after school for the abomination wrestling match.
The rest of the school day passed by as it usually did. Amity took notes, raised her hand to answer questions, and learned a few things in her classes. Before she knew it, the final bell was ringing and it was time to meet Luz.
Amity stowed her books and walked to the designated meeting place outside. She was excited both to spend more time with Luz and to see the abomination wrestling. It was certain to be a spectacle.
When Amity reached the front of the school, Luz was already standing there waiting. She had a bit of a bounce to her knees, like she couldn’t contain her energy. She was watching the school door and her eyes lit up when she saw Amity.
Luz waved with her whole arm as Amity approached, with Amity returning the gesture in a much smaller motion.
“Let’s go!” Luz exclaimed as the pair started walking. Amity took the lead, since she knew where they were going. It was pretty close to the market and would only take about ten minutes to walk there.
They talked on the way, about their classes and the hijinks Eda had been up to lately. It turned out when Luz got back to the Owl House the day before, part of one of the walls had been singed and almost destroyed. Eda had passed it off as an unfortunate casualty of her experimental potion, but Luz wondered if Lilith had anything to do with it. Hooty was refusing to talk to either of them, which was highly unusual.
Amity listened to her talk, adding in comments occasionally. Luz told stories in such an interesting way; Amity couldn’t help but want to listen.
Before Amity knew it, they had reached their destination. The abomination wrestling matches were held in a tall, large tent, which towered over the two young witches. It had large grey and purple vertical stripes around it, representing the color of abominations.
Witches of all ages were lined up to get inside, waiting to hand their tickets to the attendant. Amity and Luz entered the line behind them to wait their turn. While they waited, Amity took the tickets out of her bag. She had bought two, exactly the number they needed.
The line moved quickly, so they soon reached the front. Amity handed the tickets to the attendant, who accepted them, but not without stopping to stare in surprise as they passed him. Amity knew all of these coven members and staff worked for her mother. She just hoped they wouldn’t be too weird about it around her and Luz.
Those thoughts left her mind when she entered the tent. The inside was lit up with a variety of candles and magic lights, some projecting images of abominations on the walls. Streamers lined the overhead light structure, giving it all a festive feel. Luz was looking up with her mouth slightly open, gaping at the sight.
Ahead of the entrance, there was a gap between the tall bleachers. Amity tapped Luz on the shoulder to get her attention, then gestured to where they needed to go. When they passed through that gap, they could see the wrestling ring. It was big, about 20 feet across if Amity had to guess. The outside of it had a thick rope to mark the boundary. There was additional line in the sand behind that, much thinner, that would form a magic boundary.
Amity tore her eyes away from the ring to look for their seats. The whole ring was surrounded by bleachers, with the only gap being at the entrance. Each section was labeled with a number, with each row then labeled with a letter and seat numbers.
Amity and Luz had seats in section six, in the second to last row. Amity located it after looking around. “Our seats are up there.” She tapped Luz on the shoulder, and then pointed up at their seats.
The two went to the stairs to climb up, past the many other fight attendees who were already in their seats. Once they reached their row, Amity went first in squeezing past the other witches to get to the right spot. Behind her, she could hear Luz apologizing to each witch she passed.
When she finally reached her seat, Amity sat immediately down on it. Well, it was less of a seat and more of a spot on a bench with her assigned number, but she wasn’t complaining. Even from way back here, she could still see the ring clearly.
“These are great seats!” Luz said as she sat down next to her. She had her hands lifted as fake binoculars, aimed down at the ring. “I’m so excited!” She brought her hands down, turning to Amity. “Abominations are so cool”
“They are.” Amity agreed with a much calmer tone and volume. Luz’s enthusiasm was infectious.
“I can’t wait.” Luz clapped her hands together in excitement.
Even though Luz said she couldn’t wait, they still had to for a few more minutes. There was a buzz of conversation in the crowd and a hint of tension in the air. A faint hint of of abomination magic lingered in the air as well, likely since so much of it was cast there.
The match finally started when a witch appeared from the bleacher gap, dressed in a brightly colored costume. “Ladies and Gentlemen!” He called into a magic microphone, which spread his voice throughout the tent. “Are you ready?”
After the question he held the mic towards the audience, who called back “Yeah!” all together. The noise startled Amity slightly.
“Let me introduce our wrestlers for today! In the north, we have Abomamama!” He gestured towards the north side of the ring, with a magic spotlight appearing at the same moment. It highlighted a witch in a purple and yellow outfit. She struck a pose for the crowd, showing off her stature and muscles. The crowd cheered, including Luz who shook one fist in the air.
“In the south, we have returning champion Snowbomination!” He moved his hand south, the spotlight going with him to highlight a different witch. She was wearing a similar outfit, but with white and purple instead of yellow. She dropped to the ground to do pushups, earning her much applause.
Amity clapped for them both as she glanced over at Luz, who had practically jumped out of her seat to cheer. She was surprisingly into it considering she had never heard of the sport before yesterday.
When she looked back down at the ring, the announcer was explaining the rules. “This will be a match between two abominations. The first to disintegrate or fall out of the ring will be defeated. Winner takes the championship! Let’s have a clean match today.” He lifted his hand, holding up three fingers. The two witches cast their circles, summoning their abominations on their side of the ring.
These abominations were huge, way bigger than any Amity could summon. They had darker colors as well, probably made of materials specifically to help fight other abominations. Amity would have to do some research to say for sure.
“Count down with me.” The announcer called to the audience. “3! 2! 1! Begin!” He threw his hand down at begin, and the abominations surged into action.
The witches on both sides called out orders as they moved, telling the abominations what to do. The two abominations lurched towards the center of the ring, faster than Amity’s abomination could move but still slowly.
When the two met in the middle they both roared, lifting arms to grapple with the other. It was harder to tell which one was which when they were this close. They toppled to the ground, still wrestling for control.
One of the witches whistled, and her abomination freed itself to back away. When the other one rose it wasn’t as tall as it had started, showing that it had lost the first encounter and taken some damage. It roared defiantly before they clashed again.
The crowd cheered with every blow, calling the names of the witches. Luz was right there with them, cheering for Abomamama at the top of her lungs. Amity was drawn into the spirit of the event as well, but kept her cheers quieter.
It looked cool and like it took a lot of abomination skill to do well. The two abominations were extremely well trained and responded quickly to their witch. In terms of a career though, Amity couldn’t see herself doing this. It was a lot of fun to watch, but it wasn’t the career for her.
Unfortunately, her track could lead her there anyway. If she didn’t make the Emperor’s Coven, this could be where she ended up. She looked at the two witches, now shouting in each other’s faces as their abominations continued to grapple.
Despite the noise and fervor around her, that sent a chill down her spine. It was a sobering thought.
The match continued below, with Abomamama extending her lead. Her abomination was slowly moving the other towards the edge as they wrestled, getting ready to push it out. The crowd clamored for a win as they neared the edge.
On the sideline, Snowbomination was calling orders to her abomination with little response. It was barely hanging in there, barely still standing.
Abomamama whistled loudly and lifted one finger to the sky in some kind of hand signal. Her abomination lurched to action, leaning down to lift the other onto its gooey shoulder. It then surged forward, stopping ahead of the line to launch the other abomination. The losing one flew surprisingly far, crossing the line and smashing into an invisible barrier before it could reach the stands.
A large ding rang out, signaling the end of the match. The crowd, including Luz, went wild. Amity joined in too, unable to resist the mood despite her distracting thoughts.
Snowbomination ran over to kneel by it, while Abomamama joined hers in the ring to celebrate. She raised both arms in the air in victory, with her abomination doing the same. The crowd whooped and stomped their feet to cheer, with the announcer re-appearing.
“Our new champion, Abomamama!” He shouted into the mic, bringing the spotlight onto the witch with a sweep of his hand. The crowd continued for a few minutes, before the cheering died down. “Thank you all for a great season!” The announcer continued. “As you leave, please proceed carefully out of the arena.” He waved around at the crowd as they started to move. He called out a final farewell, before vanishing from the ring.
Amity and Luz had to wait another few minutes for their turn, since they were sitting all the way in the back. Once it was time, they walked down the steps and followed the rest of the crowd out of the tent.
“That was amazing!” Luz was still talking way louder than usual, since her ears were used to the noise of the crowd. “She was like, pow, and then the other one was like, bam!” With each sound she faked lunging, moving similar to how the abominations did.
Amity walked alongside her, heading in the general vicinity of their homes. “I liked it too.” She said, trying not to talk too loudly like Luz was. “Their abominations are very strong.”
“I have to try it.” Luz had pulled out her little square notebook, where she drew the glyphs for her spells. “If only I could summon an abomination, it just looks so fun.” It made sense that Luz would want to do it, after all she was studying every track. She still couldn’t summon abominations though.
“I’m not sure that I would want to.” Amity admitted, voicing what she had been thinking about during the match. “I mean, I can’t imagine doing that as a job. I don’t know what I want to do.”
“What about other covens?” Luz asked, either forgetting or not caring that Amity was studying abomination magic. Knowing her, it was probably the latter.
“I don’t know what they’re like.” Amity said with a shake of her head.
A grin grew on Luz’s face. “We’ll find out then. Just like today, we can visit them and see what they do!”
As Amity looked at Luz, she was again struck with how incredible this girl was.
“Alright, let’s do it.”
Character Research
A cartoon that I have enjoyed watching somewhat recently is the Owl House (if it wasn’t apparent by the previous post I made about it for research) because of the differentiation of the characters as well as the uniforms at the school, Hexside. The school (as well as the entirety of the boiling isles) is split into covens and each coven is represented by a different symbol and colour. Depending on what coven a student is in dictates the colour of the sleeves and trousers of their uniform which helps separate the characters into groups and offers even more variety to the designs than just their main characteristics. For example, Luz is more clearly a protagonist because she is in multiple covens, so her uniform reflects that and is more colourful than the other students. Also when in detention, one of the students had a torn edge on her uniform to make her seem more tough however she was actually quite nice, which shows how character design can influence our initial opinions on said characters. Despite the phrase ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’, it only takes a few seconds for people to form and opinion on another person or being whether they like it or not.
Tumblr media
I like the cloaks on witches, when designing a witch character it sort of looks incomplete otherwise most of the time. Thankfully for something that is used a lot design-wise, there is a bit of flexibility with how it is done; for example, it could look like how the Hexside uniform it, or the edge could be jagged or torn or have a different trim entirely, or it could be part of a cape. It could have a hood or it could not, simply put the possibilities are finite but there is a chance for variety.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, characters like King are good. He is very adorable especially since his head is moreso a skull mask than anything else. Also in the show they can’t tell what exactly he is which is quite interesting, despite the fact that he is upset about not knowing it himself. Both him and Hooty are well designed characters. Hooty is technically only a face but he is able to be incredibly invasive and annoying. He can also get increasingly more disturbing by either puking up the mail (makes you wonder how it got there in the first place) or tearing himself out of the door and revealing the organs inside which he apparently has. Now thinking about it, he can likely get stabbed and bleed which has never occurred to me before seeing as he is part house. It has come to my realization that Hooty resembled the Lemon Demon song Cabinet Man, being contained in essentially a box and seemingly not organic but containing organs and such. Cabinet Man is about a man who turns himself into an addicting arcade machine and drove a few people to insanity while also eating people occasionally, which in hindsight is very disturbing but hey ho it’s a good song.
I saw a playthrough a while ago of Oxenfree and I really like the story and overall look of the game. It was made in 2.5D, basically meaning that the characters themselves were 3D but the setting they were in was 2D which I really like and I personally find it really cool to look at. The whole game was unnerving, especially when communicating with the ghosts as multiple voices took turns speaking and every character got possessed at some point I believe. Also time ends up looping a lot and the characters have to replay the same scenes over and over until something is done to break it. This was personally scary for me as each time the loop restarted it had a glitch effect which usually frightens me a bit (glitching, backwards or distorted audio and distorted faces terrify me. Does that stop me from watching things I know will scare me? No, it’s interesting.) The game involves the use of a radio in order to open up rifts in order to both communicate with the ghosts and to stop people from being possessed and levitating like gravity doesn’t exist. At the end of the game there are multiple different outcomes depending on the choices that the player makes however it is ultimately revealed that time has looped back to the very beginning and it is still an issue. Apparently if the game is replayed in the same save file (I think) then the protagonist has the opportunity to send a message to herself via the radio to warn them to not come to the island in the first place and if the warning works then the time loops stop which is really cool.
Another game that I saw recently was Life Is Strange: True Colours, and the setting of that game is absolutely breathtaking. The town is beautiful and quaint and where it is situated is even better. It’s surprising how the game runs on computers that aren’t owned by NASA due to the scenery alone.
Tumblr media
All the buildings are made of wood but they aren’t run down or withered and there are plants and trees in the streets which just make it look so much nicer, I don’t think they could have made a more aesthetically pleasing town if they tried (if you ignore the deaths of a load of people and a giant corporation trying to cover it up and killing a guy the player likely grew emotionally attached to in the process but it’s fine). Also like with the Owl House, the characters are designed in such a way that pretty much everyone who sees them gets the same first impressions of them, like Jed being a nice guy like santa or something (and definitely not a guy who tries to shoot you in the head to hide the fact he killed a lot of people by recklessness) and Mac being a not so great guy seeing as he attacks the protagonists brother the first time we see him, he’s still a bad guy to be fair but hey at least he didn’t kill the brother intentionally, right? Also it doesn’t help that the protagonist beat the crap out of Mac near the beginning so he had a bit of a bruised face for the entire thing which made him look like a guy who got into fights regularly which could be true but as fare as we are aware it isn’t the case.
Alador had never been a great planner, not even when it came to his Abominations. He preferred to think of himself as a tinkerer; he knew his end goal, and he knew where to start, everything else was just details he could figure out along the way. It was part of why Blight Industries was second-to-none. The designs couldn’t be stolen until the Abominations had actually been produced, because they didn’t exist until the very last second, and the only people capable of replicating the Abominations without Alador’s assistance were shareholders in BI anyway. And even then, they’d have a difficult time without Alador’s notes.
However, Alador could name a number of times where his inability with planning served more as a detriment. Like right now, for instance. His feet thudded against the still warm mud, and he felt the exhaustion in his bones as he conjured the energy for another spell, wiping away traces of his passing for this portion of his journey. He had no idea where he was going, or even where he was. When he’d left, over half a day ago judging by the first faint traces of sunrise in the distance, he’d been heading towards the Elbow.
If he’d gone by cart or staff, he’d have been by now. But if he had gone by cart, there was no way he could have avoided being tracked. Not without hurting, and possibly killing, people. He wasn’t a murder. “Aren’t you?” he tried to ignore the intrusive thought, whispered to him with the faintest touch of Odalia’s voice.
Then there was his staff. He fiddled with the zipper hidden in the interior of his work jacket. It hadn’t been unzipped in a long time, and it had been even longer since he last laid his hands on his staff. Would Pige even recognize him, after all these years? If she did, would she be able to forgive him, for locking her away to gather dust in a bag of holding? For abandoning her? Lily had, but… that was different. The bond between a palisman and a witch was supposed to be something unbreakable. And if it was broken… well, Alador had seen his fair share of Odalia’s palismans. The ones that escaped with cracks and breaks were the lucky ones.
So no, his staff wasn’t an option. He couldn’t afford to lose Pige now. That left his feet. Heading towards the elbow, with no idea what to do afterwards. Probably head towards the shoulder, and then… the skull, maybe? It was largely untamed, due to the difficulty of crossing the mouth… Which would also present him his own challenge.
He couldn't walk much longer, he knew. The only thing keeping him going was the momentum of it; if he stopped, he would collapse where he stood. Then he saw the shack, alone amongst the trees, with a wild garden creeping around and, in a number of places, on it.
Alador made his way into the dusty abode, the door creaking as it opened before him. He coughed, and dust swirled in the air. He took in the room. It was bare, save a coffee table, an armchair, and a rather large couch. He almost cried seeing the couch, and collapsed upon it. Exhaustion took him immediately.
He awoke with a start, to the sound of someone drinking something. Someone lived in all this dust? "Of course not. Don't be stupid, dear," Odalia's voice answered his private thoughts. His body froze. "At this point it might set a record."
"You're dead!" He wanted to shout, but it came out as a whisper.
"And yet, here I am" Odalia's voice commented, and he could hear her take a slow drink. "What makes you think I'd be dead?"
"You couldn't have survived…" his own voice felt distant. Barely there.
"Survived what, dear?" Odalia's voice was strong; firm, yet calm.
"I killed you."
"No, you didn't, Alador," she denied, and he felt her cold hand reach out and take his. He shuddered as she squeezed. "You made an Abomination do it, and ran away. Nearly thirty years, and you didn't even stay to watch the light leave my eyes."
"Shut up," he tried to command her voice; she couldn't be here, he had to be hallucinating.
"Honestly Alador, could you at least act a little more mature? You tried to have an Abomination murder me, and I'm still able to hold a civil conversation."
"How are you here?"
"Because you failed, Alador. Like always."
"I'm not a failure!"
"Yes you are! You've been a failure since you were a child! When was the last time you even contributed to anything successful?"
"The company-"
"Yes, your father's company, that he made successful with his own Abominations. His success earned him his spot as the first head of the Abomination coven. Then, he passed it down to you, and I made sure it didn't crash and burn while you… tinkered."
"My Abominations-"
"Are certainly unique, I'll give you that. But successful? Please Alador, we both know that for every one that works there are at least seven failures."
"I-"
"Don't speak. I've proven my point," Alador felt his jaw reluctantly clinch with Odalia's command. "Honestly, Alador, why do you always insist on fighting what you know is right?"
"You're wrong," his voice came out quiet, and weak.
"Am I?" He felt the cold spread from his hand up his arm, seizing his throat.
"I'm not worthless," he said, trying to squeeze her hand hard enough to hurt. She gave no reaction.
"I never said you were worthless, Alador," she said, affecting a soothing tone, "You're worth quite a fortune, and you were able to sire one good heir. Although she did inherit your rebellious streak. But I can smooth that out. No, Alador, what you are is pathetic."
He felt the chill settle on his heart, as tears began to well in his still closed eyes, "No."
"Yes, Alador. You've always been pathetic. Even when you were a child, and you wanted to settle for Lilith."
"Shut up!" He shouted, but found himself unable to rip his hand from her grip, or move at all.
"The second-best child of a second-rate family. But honestly, if it weren't for your money, even she would have been out of your league. "
"Shut up!" A sharp blow came across his cheek, and a chill spread out from the impact. She'd slapped him?
"You will not speak back to me like that Alador!" Odalia's voice… changed, somehow. Even in her fury her voice was icy, cold enough to burn. "I've spent every moment of our marriage taking care of you, even when you began cheating on me and drinking that horrid memory potion, and this has been my repayment? Leaving the job of murdering me to one of your little toys, sending our children off to be under the care of criminals, and this ungrateful attitude when all I've tried to do is remind you of your place?"
"How do you know about the children?" Alador asked. She wouldn't have had time to check on them if she had followed him, and there was more that didn't add up, "And you couldn't know about the memory potion… and I made sure to wipe my tracks."
He could feel the ghost of her lips near his ear as she whispered to him, "I know everything about you, dear. You can't escape."
Alador shot upwards in a cold sweat, the blankets pooling at his hips. There hadn't been blankets when he'd passed out… Had Odalia really been here? He looked around, and noticed a surprising lack of disturbance in the dust, save what he knew himself to be responsible for. "How?"
"Are you awake this time?" A voice called from above him. Turning his head towards the voice, he saw a fox, upside down on the ceiling.
"Uhm… yes?"
"Good. You're quite noisy in your sleep. I hoped the blankets might help calm you, but they didn't."
"Oh… my apologies… I didn't realize this home was occupied," Alador pulled the blankets to the side, and sat up, preparing to leave.
"It's not," the fox said quickly, "and I don't mind if you stay. I'll just need to close my ears." Alador took a moment to process everything as his brain shook off the last remnants of his terrifying rest. The fox was carved from wood, but moved naturally, and was now making its way down the side of the wall, one paw always on the wood. Was it a house demon? But it was so different from the Owl House's house demon? Perhaps, if Alador were lucky, Hooty was unique.
"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I can't stay. I'm making my way to the Skull."
"Oh," the house demon's body slumped, "Is that far?"
"Oh, uhm," something about the question threw Alador, "I'm not sure. I've never made the journey on foot. Maybe a week?"
"That seems a long way, why are you going so far?" the fox questioned, and Alador froze up. How was he meant to answer this? Any answer he could give would only bring more questions that he was even less ready to answer.
"I don't believe I owe you an answer," he decided to avoid the question.
"You barged into me and passed out, and now you're trying to abandon me! An answer is the least of what I'm owed." Alador took a moment to process the demon's words, as he stared down at it. It looked up at him, clearly upset.
"Abandon you?" He asked,and the fox almost winced, withdrawing into itself.
"Well," the fox stuttered, "I just thought that, with how you came in and passed out, that maybe you'd stay..."
Alador carefully thought out his answer, finally responding "You might be right, about me. I guess it is kind of like me abandoning you. I've… done a lot of that this past day."
"You don't have to," the fox offered, "you can stay."
"I can't," Alador denied, "I'm a wild witch. You'll end up hurt if I'm found."
"Then don't be found!" The fox exclaimed desperately, "I don't think wild witches are bad, if that's what you're worried about. My old occupant was a wild witch!" That… explained a lot, when Alador thought about it. Including why the house was likely abandoned.
"I can't," Alador said, stepping towards the door. "I'm not strong enough to stay."
"You don't have to be!" The fox said, "Please, stay!"
"I'll make you a promise," Alador offered, "when I can come back, I will."
"Daphne said the same thing," the house demon muttered, looking away. After a moment, the fox offered its paw, "Make an Everlasting Oath."
Alador, hesitantly, drew the energy up for the Oath, taking the fox's paw. "When I can, when I have the strength to, I will come back." The oath sealed itself. Alador made his way to the door.
"My name is Vul," the house demon called out to him, "when you come back, you can call me Vul."
(Line break)
Luz ascended the stairs quietly, listening for any sounds from the Blights. However, even as she stood in front of the door to her room, she heard nothing. Carefully, she pushed open the door, letting out a breath when she saw all three Blights, sitting quietly in a circle. Piled on the floor between were their scrolls, and even from here Luz could see the massive amount of notifications. News travelled fast. On the Boiling Isles apparently.
"Hey," she gently called out, to no reaction from the seemingly-numb Blights. After a moment of the awkward, somber silence, she continued, “I wanted to come check on you guys. Are you ok?” Quickly, she continued, “Sorry, that’s a stupid question. Of course you’re not ok, given everything going on. I’m sorry, I’ll leave-”
“Stay,” Amity said, softly, just as Luz was about to cross the threshold out of the room, “Please.”
“Alright,” Luz agreed, moving towards Amity. She sat down gently, joining the Blights in their silence. She found Amity's hand, and gave it a gentle, comforting squeeze. Amity squeezed back, tight, and didn't let go, as if making sure Luz was really there.
It was Emira who broke the silence, "What happens now?"
The squeeze from Amity's hand tightened for just a second, before Amity spoke, "I don't know."
"We wait for Dad, right?" Ed suggested, "Miss Lilith said they didn't find him, so he's probably out there, right?"
"Ed…" Emira quietly said
"No!" He almost shouted, "They probably need Dad, because he's really powerful with Abominations, or they want the money and need one of our parents, and Dad was the smarter choice. So he's alive."
"Ed's right," Amity agreed, "If he wasn't found, there's no reason to believe he's dead." An uncomfortable silence descended, as Amity spoke the fact they'd been avoiding. Eventually the silence was broken, by a crow pecking at the window.
"Dear Emira, Edric, and Amity Blight," a voice Luz didn't recognize called out, "As assistant to the leader of the Oracle Coven, I wish to inform you that the coven will be taking the burden of making funeral arrangements for your mother. Currently, the funeral is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday the Eleventh, at three p.m. If this time is inconvenient, please respond with a time better suited. If not, we will see you tomorrow at the coven's temple in Bonesborough." The crow then closed its beak, almost entirely motionless as it perched on the windowsill.
"Wow, that seems quick," Luz commented, "In the human realm it's like three days to a week." When none of the Blight children responded, Luz added, "Sorry. I probably should have kept that thought to myself."
"It's alright," Amity says lightly, squeezing Luz's hand for comfort.
