Jedi + Constellations

Mace, Depa, and Kanan as represented by the constellations Vela, Carina, and Puppis forming the Argo Navis, or the ship Argo, crewed by Jason and the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology.

Mace is represented by Vela, the sails. Sails provide the primary form of propulsion on sailing vessels. Mounted on masts to place them high above the ship, sails harness the wind to power the ship onward.

Depa is represented by Carina, the keel. The keel is the structural backbone of a ship on the bottom of a sailing vessel. Its flat blade prevents the ship from being blown sideways and holds the ballast to keep the ship upright.

Kanan is represented by Puppis, the stern deck. The stern deck (or poop deck) is at the rear of the boat and serves as the roof of the aft cabin built into the ship. Traditionally, it provided a high point on the ship, ideal for observation and navigation.

Ships are vessels for journeys, subject to the waters they navigate and the winds that blow. Sailing may symbolize spiritual journeys and the voyage of life amidst changing tides and temperamental forces. This symbolism is fitting for the marginalized Jedi who spend their lives connecting to the Force, seeking to be at peace and balance with a power that may just as easily swallow them.
