˖°.‎‧₊˚✧ juno
✩ let me love your OCs masterlist
i. love. juno.
Tumblr media
i've talked about @lazarel-3000's oc before at length but if you haven't read The All of You, you should do so immediately and leave lots of love & kudos. i am so grateful for them creating juno, sharing her with me & the world at large, and all the absolutely fuckin drool-worthy art they offer up of juno x rocket that has altered my brain chemistry and which i think about almost daily (serious they are one of my favorite creators of all time so check out their blog and give them a follow). anyway me drawing juno sometimes feels like the height of hubris (how dare i) but i am a mere mortal and weak to such temptations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have many favorite lines and moments in The All of You but one of my favorites is (spoiler) when juno flashes a bunch of drones to...distract them? prove her identity?...while she and rocket escape. girl's not wearing very much in the first place - just some jewelry (probably significantly less than i have her in tbh). i also forgot that her tits were covered by an ore chain at first (my b) so i added one on top off all the jewelry i had already painted (made me a little sad to cover it up so i saved a detail layer lol). i mean granted "ore chain" and "heavy gold bejewelled bib necklace/chestplate" aren't really the same thing but honestly i just wanted an excuse to draw juno covered in sparklies.
i could've done better with my anatomy (again i forgot about the chain so the original drawing was literally just her about to pull the neckline of her “dress” open and when i added the chain i thought — well I should fix her hands so it looks more like she’s holding it? but then i just… didn’t) and i had another version with linework on the jewelry but honesty i decided i like it better like this. did i have too much fun lazily painting misshapen beads? yes. did i overdo it on the glitter? also yes. will it actually hurt your eyes? still yes.
do i have any regrets? not a goddamn one
anyway thank you again to @lazarel-3000 for creating this babe and letting me have fun drawing her
slightly nsfw behind the cut? some close-ups that are a touch risky and a jewelry-free version. better safe than sorry.
previous juno doodle
a look at the jewelry under the literal only thing hiding her boobs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of my fave lines (i have so many) is about how her jewelry is covering more of her than the fabric. i think the fabric’s supposed to be smaller but i just settled for making it as transparent as humanly possible so uh yeah.
Tumblr media
anyway yes that's it this was such a glitterific fun little portrait to waste time on this week while work is closed for winter break. go read The All of You and thank you again, @lazarel-3000, for ALL your creations. ♡♡♡♡

I was just wondering what brushes and programs do you use? Also I see your a fan of WoW or something? Your banner looks like the Draenei world! Either way, just found you today and I'm in love with your art! I too am trying to break into the Video Game Industry!
At this point I've moved 98% of my workflow to Clip Studio Paint (I use the PRO version that's $50 or $25 if you catch it on sale, which is often), with an old, non-subscription version of Photoshop to do some of the technical file adjustments that CSP hasn't quite implemented yet or is haltingly slow at.
For the most part the brushes are CSP defaults, with slight adjustments to the default sliders depending on what I want.
For my painter-style: Thick Paint - Gouache For cel-style: Marker - Felt Pen For sketchy marks: Pen - Real G Pen For particles: Airbrush - Droplet and Thick Paint - Pointalism For texture: Pencil - Real pencil
But now the fun stuff, right? Most brushes that work for Photoshop can be imported into CSP with little to no fiddling, unless they have very fancy effects on them Plants/Buildings: FREE Brush sets from Tamberella https://tamberella.gumroad.com/ Linework: FREE 'Lineart for Comics', in this pack https://www.deviantart.com/robot-h3ro/art/Hero-Artistic-Brushes-Photoshop-V3-705781546 Glitter/Polygon shapes: This FREE brush set in the CSP store https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1855164
Halftones: 12 halftone Texture brushes for $10 (honestly if you google search for them you can probably find something identical for free, i'm pretty sure this pack used to be :/) https://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/premium/12-halftone-texture-brushes-adobe-photoshop
Also yes I've mostly been playing WoW classic after Shadowlands was uh.... Shadowlands. I hear the new expansion is good but I don't know anyone left who still plays so I have not been lured into it yet.
Tumblr media
Anyway! Thanks for the note, best of luck in your own artistic travels <3

development log 4# ( making the catboy himself )
Hello everyone, it's been a while, hasn't it? To think this account is still kicking around is quite surprising! Anyways, I am sorry for leaving everyone wondering what happened to this account, as of late we are still trying to renovate every other account we have concerning this project. Also, if you haven't noticed, the user handle is still the one that we used almost two years ago, yeah... I really gotta see how I can change that. Anyways, I come to bring special news that the Repainted Jevil fight has been completed mostly. What purpose does it serve to progression? Not much really; however, expect us to implement it to ACT II as a special secret between you and I.
As for other things, I guess I’ll teach you how to draw a DMitri of your own!
Tumblr media
Yes! Now you can create the gay fortnite degenerate himself for free! So anyways, I guess this is where we start that process!
1). First, we start with the head! It has to be a circle. DMitri is a discord logo after all, he has no jaw, no eyebrows or any of that unnecessary junk!
Tumblr media
2). Create two semi-circled eyes and blacken the sclera. Then draw the smile, I personally like to draw it from the left side of the circle, but you can do whatever you want.
Tumblr media
3). Draw from the near the top of the circle two little horns curving inward. Like I said, most of the detail stems around the circle.
For the hat, I personally draw a sharp-curved line going towards the top of the head and then connect it with another line connecting to his manible. After you are done making the shape of the hat, add the bells, or status circles to each end.
Tumblr media
4). Then underneath the head, make a nice tooth-patterned neck ruffle. I personally like doing mine in the shape of curtain curves, but you can do anything you want for the cowl.
Now, we are getting to the fun part.
Tumblr media
5). The body. This is weird because originally I gave DMitri the body type of Jevil, but then I opted to make it more “petite and twinkish.”
Due to difficulty explaining stuff, the best way I can describe drawing this part of DMitri is that his outfit tightly fits around his torso and waist while his sleeves are very baggy. Hands are also difficult to explain because I recently implemented detailed hands; however, you can draw them as circle nubs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6). Remove the circle linemarks, clean the linework, color and presto~! You made your own little DMitri!
Tumblr media
You can do anything with it, or ping everyone with it (except leaving it in a jar!)

The Sailor Moon Reboot Universe: A War Veteran's Memories
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
As someone who loves and appreciates art, I just. I can't with Crystal/Crystal Season 3/ Eternal/ Cosmos anymore. The Moonie community has been failed time and time again by Toei. From animation to animation change, the quality of SMC/III/E/C continues to be lackluster because Toei refuses to give the project the attention it deserves, and pay their animators. As Sailor Moon Cosmos draws ever nearer, (ye gods), I would love for you to partake in my little Sailor Moon Crystal Failures Recap Sampler Platter, as we share in the succulent delights of generic animation, terrible character designs, and empty animated eyes.
Sailor Moon Chrysler:
Ok, so in Crystal we see an attempt at Naoko Takeuchi’s manga artstyle. There are some difficulties here though. We all know the Crystal song and dance- Web series budget, overworked and underpaid Filipino animators, Toei being the worst, etc etc. But hot take? At least they tried *something* original.
Tumblr media
I mean, this doesn’t look Amazing. The shading on the hair is bland, the face lacks the elasticity and expression of the manga, there is very little detail, ya know. But it’s something newish! With the proper budget, this style could look immaculate, and in some shots it do:
Tumblr media
Gorgeous shot, detail, 15/10, no notes. For the majority of the show though? Mmmmm. 4/10? 3.5/10?
SMC: World War III:
Although Toes gave SMC3 the semblance of a budget and moved it to TV broadcast, they also changed the character designs to be. Well.
Tumblr media
They look very Pretty Cure.
Tumblr media
And look, I adore Pretty Cure, ok? I am consuming Hirogaru Sky content on my TL  like a queen ant consuming food from worker ants. I am Just as invested in my son Cure Wing as all you other magical girl ne'er-do-wells. But the style of Pretty Cure does not suit the Sailor Moon manga style-some would say it is diametrically opposed to it in many ways.
Tumblr media
Look at the gorgeous flowing hair, delicate linework, transparent effects.
Now, the criminal on trial:
Tumblr media
Overly cutsiefied proportions and faces, thick, (by comparison), linework, far too much shine effect on the hair and eyes, zero amounts of ethereal beauty, and also Mercury’s AWOL eye.
UGHHHHH.
Considering how iconic Sailor Moon is, and how fucking POPULAR IT IS, JESUS ON THE CROSS TOEI WHAT IS THE MISCOMMUNICATION HERE?
And I know that discourse about the SMC animation is a bit, shall we say, expected, but I needed this little refresher to make my point.
Sailor Moon Cosmos/ Eternal is not an improvement, and just continued neglect on Toei’s part to get literally any part of this project right.
CosTernal:
Ok, so, when we first got the character designs for eternal in 2019, I was skeptical. The return of Kazuko Tadano, an excellent animator on the original 90’s Sailor Moon anime originally heartened me, and then:
Tumblr media
They just look kind of??? Cheap?? None of their poses are particularly eye-catching, the proportions look Very strange (Mars’s legs are broken, wtf is Jupiter’s knee, Venus’s left arm is Way too short, Moon’s right foot is missing, etc), and the faces just look. A bit dead inside. Moon and Moon Jr are the only ones with *expressive* expressions; the other girls just have these flat smiles, with Jupiter/Mars having the same mouth, as do Venus/Mercury.
This was official art, after years of silence, from a renowned animator.
What the Fuck.
The style is still lacking that singular SM manga flair, and just looks like the 90’s designs with the actual heart of the characters removed. It was deeply frustrating to me as a long time Sailor Moon fan.
The animation in the actual movies wasn’t much better-nothing stand out, nothing even close to the lovely ethereal style of the manga.
Tumblr media
One more time for the people in the back, bad proportions, zero detail, empty eyes, personality-less Senshi, can I get an Amen?
The Present:
Sailor Moon Cosmos parts 1 and 2 are scheduled to be in theaters this summer, and from the looks of the promotional images we’ve received so far, they don’t appear to be an improvement:
Tumblr media
Another piece of official promotional material that’s off model, (what is happening with her head? Her hands????), and uninteresting. Sailor Moon, sitting on a roof, in front of Tokyo skyscrapers. Very hecking original and cool, very interesting, much creative. Its composition is off, but more importantly, it lacks the Rizz one would expect from an official Sailor Moon poster. Take a look at these from the 90’s anime:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dynamic, interesting poses, great composition, stunning colors, consistent art quality. A tall order, huh?
The most recent poster we got is slightly, better but not much:
Tumblr media
At least there is some pizazz, but the stale air remains. This looks like *generic movie poster here*, like
Tumblr media
*characters posed in front of Bad Guy, looking Determined and Angry*.
Final Thoughts:
I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade; if you are genuinely earnest and excited for Sailor Moon Cosmos, I hope it blows your socks off bestie. If you loved the animation for or just the Sailor Moon Reboot Universe in general, that’s amazing! Please keep enjoying it, and let it make your life a little better.
Personally, though, I just can’t get over the disappointment. An amazing, universally beloved franchise with this much room for creativity only comes once in a while. Imagine if we had gotten a reimagining of the Sailor Moon story, a la PGSM, or Sera Myu? What if Toei had given the project CardCaptor Sakura: Clear Card levels of love and budget. Instead, we were given half-assed animation and designs, with little story to go with it, (that’s another post though).
If you were wondering why the new reboot was rubbing you the wrong way, or didn’t have the words to describe your nagging doubts, I hope this helped! If any Sailor Moon fan found this worthy and informative, I did what I meant to do. Sailor Moon Crystal/Season III/ Eternal/ Cosmos is nice in sentiment, but in practice Toei continues to lure fans with the promise of quality Sailor Moon animated content, only to provide next to nothing, and screw their animators over in the process!
However much of a blow-hard I sounded in my screed though, I am actually not too worried. The Sailor Moon fandom is uniquely creative and amazing- we continue to make our own art, animations and contributions to the lore- all  without exploiting workers! Sailor Moon Crystal was a disappointing project, and Cosmos is a lackluster end, but I’ve got all the Moon content I need right here.
Sarada ba!

I’m curious about your apex oc
the design is really intriguing and i was wondering if there were any details or backstory you would want to share for them?
also the linework on the sketch you did on Nov 21 looked really good! Cool composition as well
I am so incredibly honored by - all of this! I am very much still figuring out his backstory, but everything about him is largely based on - me!
He is a Gaia Native - and a Native American coded legend (based on my experience as a Cherokee woman who grew up in the capital of the Cherokee nation), the son of a fisherman, who died when he was young of congestive heart failure (based on my own loss of my mother), and a nightclub proprietress. Which, as most know - is a big no-no on Gaia. He was born without one foot (I was not, but many family members are/have been amputees) and lost the other leg in an accident involving his (soon to be discussed) later-life involvement in one of Gaias major underground crime syndicates. A lot of his design is based around his father, and his connection with his heritage. The netting around his shoulders being used in his ultimate, as well as tying back to his fathers use of netting when it came to his line of work. His name means deer in Cherokee (and is the tribe I/he belongs to). And his mask/helm is based on that as well. He speaks both English, as all other legends do - and Cherokee/Tsalagi (as I do, though I am relearning much of what I lost as a child). He joined organized crime…accidentally. The sort of situation where he saw something he wasn’t supposed to, and realized he only had one way out. I loosely intended to make his crime relations connected to Rampart and her Big Sister lore, though with any clear information about that lacking - I’ve not much to go on! But I do know that it is partially the reason he joins the games, if not entirely. His love for all that is live television and fame - is second-hand. Who doesn’t want to be beloved by millions - at least.
Here’s some general information.
AWI - Offensive Legend
Real name: Jarred Patel
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Home world: Gaia
What do you get when you put a fisherman and the proprietress of Gaia's hottest underground nightclub together? Most of a baby. Foot not included.
Passive - Take a Hike: Climbs and hurdles quicker than other legends.
Tactical - On the Wall: No realitively uncluttered vertical surface is off limits. A change in placement is made far easier by a quick run across a wall, over and behind the enemy team.
Ultimate - Not so Fast: Can catch and retract condensed enemies or teammates in a snare from up to 30 meters away. Adapted from a gun that was only really meant for fish, turned into the perfect trap for unsuspecting enemies, or teammates in need of a quick retreat.
His abilities are very Titanfall based. Which I think Apex could use. Though I am loving what we’re getting so far. But I mean, cmon? Wall running? Yes please.
He is a character I have adapted throughout - well, nearly half a decade, and brought through various fandoms. And he has changed drastically. But he has always been very uh…parkour based? Something I enjoy doing myself!
Fun facts, I suppose!
He is pansexual
He ran the gauntlet once, just to see how he would do. Not the best time, but he had fun.
He is 5’7”, he had an inch of height added to his prosthetics, his mother shakes her head at that one.
He has a birth mark shaped like George Clooney (this is something he’s had since his conception as a character 7 years ago, and I refuse to change that), where it is? Use your imagination.
He has watched Octanes streams. I think its blasphemous other legends don’t mention these. I have plotted dozens of voicelines soley based on this.
Edit: One of his eyes is also similar to cryptos augmentations. (I myself have no peripheral vision in one eye, and I thought that would be a HUGE disadvantage in the apex games, so this…seemed like an excessive, but cool solution).
If you have any other questions - feel free to ask!! Very honored you’re curious

Wanted to draw, but then the laptop decided it was time to spend all day doing updates, so I decided to share some scrapped and WIP doodles instead for some of my sketches for the Amnesia AU
I'm gonna put this under a Read More because it's quite a few, and a couple of them has some unsettling imagery that depict Jacky after the initial accident, so I wanna give a slight forewarning although nothing is colored and most everything is in blue linework anyway.
Tumblr media
Starting off a little fluffy here, but I gave up on trying to figure out how to make Claire's beak was going to work here, but anyway, that little playful dance scene.
Tumblr media
Jacky from the Faux-80s era thing (the non descript pre-snappage setting that I decided technically takes place in the 80s but the DWD comics created a snarl by boosting technology to mimic the 2010s despite the original cartoon being in the 90s and no one aged a single gosh dang day), and its that one hospital visit where he's molting from a stress-rash brought on by the anxiety during that trial over the recall on his products. Mostly a quick loose doodle to get a visual on how absolutely uncomfortable he's feeling.
Tumblr media
Nothing in particular, he's just freaking hyped over something.
Tumblr media
Face. Nothing else, I don't even think I wanted to draw anything other than face. A little more on-model than usual, tho.
Tumblr media
Very sassy "Y'all seein' this junk??" More proportionately closer to my general style, but I didn't get around to lining and coloring this one yet.
Tumblr media
Blanket cocoon, Jacky trying to get over that cold he got while insisting he's fine, but Claire thinks otherwise
Tumblr media
Figment!Jacky as seen during the fever chapter when Jacky starts imagining him as he saw himself on the tape of the "Fell Out The Window And Cracked His Skull Like An Egg" incident that landed him here to begin with. Originally described a little more scuffed in the story proper, I wanted to figure out a design to work with for the illustration purposes (I wanted to keep the image put in the AO3 release to not go as hard as the actual words, and also drawing injury to a blorbo is way freaking harder to endure than typing a few words down because you gotta stare at that the whole time making it ahhhhhhhh) that adhered to the description, minus the... um... stains, so one working idea was to draw the headfeathers more ruffled to give the indication that the injury still existed. Also, there's like NO reference images of QuackerJack with his cap askew so I had to figure out how the angling and eyeholes are going to work, so you can imagine this is a challenge for me.
Tumblr media
POV: You're Darkwing and this is the moment where the AU starts, after QuackerJack was launched out of a third story window by two large sentient banana toys. He's got the concussion of a lifetime from hitting concrete, and doesn't remember the last four months (AKA: My initial estimate for the timeline of the first half of the comics). He doesn't realize that his life is in your hands right now. Good luck, Darkwing.
This was intended to be the illustration of the incident, but I still can't figure out how to tone it down while still keeping the urgency of the scene intact. Again, blorbos in ouch ain't exactly fun to draw but I suppose the solace in this is knowing that he gets taken care of and put on the mend right away, so it's not like this is totally bleak, but still... this has been sitting on the backburner for months...
Tumblr media
Let's do a palate cleanser for a sec after that jarring image. This ain't got anything to do with the AU, but it's still a neat unfinished sketch.
Tumblr media
Not exactly part of the AU, but remember that Wereduck!Jacky thing I did around October last year? Here's a playful sketch of him wagging his tailfeathers with his tongue out because he am puppy.
And that's a handful. I tend to scrap things if I either just don't like how the layout is or if I'm unsure if it's appropriate yet to do so, either because spoilers or because I don't think enough context could make it make sense yet.

1, 14, 15, 16 and 23, for the artist ask game
1. Show your most recent WIP
Tumblr media
^ wip artfight attack! its in the ugly stage of coloring, lol
ignore the blocked out bit, i am Not doxxing myself today thank u
14. How has your art changed over the years?
really, the biggest change has been the fact i've gotten more comfortable drawing things that were previously completely outside my comfort zone!
my improvement has mostly been a slow change after i decided to completely change my style, abandoning clean linework for a textured brush that works better for my shaky hands
i'm still getting a grasp on anatomy and stylizing it, since it's something i never really learnt and instead just half-assed in a believable fashion, but i do think i've improved in that regard :)
15. Biggest artist pet peeve?
when people erase major character traits / ethnic traits in their art of someone else's character!!!
(but also a smaller one is just when people use pitch black to shade saturated colors, since it muddies the tones in a way i'm not a fan of)
16. What's the most daunting part of your process? (Ex: planning, sketching, lineart, rendering, etc)
mostly just the sketching / planning, since i can't usually get the concept in my head on the paper adequately, lol
23. Do you listen to music or watch shows while you work? If so, what’s your favourite?
oh yes!! i listen to a variety of music while i draw, though i tend to just listen to things like chirpin' by prince zuko or eat your salad by ceti zēni (basically just "songs that make you question your sanity after you've listened to it for two hours straight")
sometimes i watch minecraft videos or random shows, but usually its just music (i was watching branzy's year on lifesteal video for the third time while i was writing earlier, lol -- last show i watched while drawing was cyberpunk edgerunners im pretty sure? my memory's spotty ok)

forsooth reread the first part of lackadaisy and just a few excerpts, particularly w/a visual focus
like i said, that i started reading this in '07 (which, consulting the copyrights, means the end of this section was still Currently Updating at that time, very fun for me, i do also remember A Break b/w the end of that section & the first page of part two b/c i remember being so [oouhh hell yes] when that updated)
mentioning the off the shits quality right from the start and like, around this age maybe already starting to draw a bit more / beyond like doodles to pass the time at school or at home largely; not being at all very Online yet to know abt what the hell people post anywhere so like my god people not only just make their own comics, not only are they essentially ongoing graphic novels, someone can also just be making something this high quality....intriguing and just holistically inspirational on the artistic front, that people just Were out there able to just do this kind of stuff, nonprofessionally, b/c they wanted to. and just the intrigue of like, i loved keeping up with it as a whole then & since, the historical element is fun, the drama & mystery elements, the dynamic adventure aspect, the slightly lighthearted playful nature of the work overall (jellicle...), the constant relevance of Character and the constant progression of Story
but also it sure occurred to me that a big like Artistic Illumination & Motivation element of it is how immediately effectively quasi three-dimensional the art is, especially with the figures: the realistically consistent geometry in changing perspectives / characters being consistently constructed out of would-be three-dimensional shapes, the Lighting/Shading doing a ton to define the 3D shapes, the use of fabric wrinkling adding not just visual detail but following form & movement....middle school / would-be high school years as sure a particularly transformative time for my drawing like, hey, i can just do stuff, hey i can make & post niche fanart so that i'm motivated to draw just a lot more b/c i really am hardly moved to do it outside of that lmao....and i imagine that having This dropped in my lap and like, its feeling pretty immediate was this inspiration of like, organically selling this approach of Constructing Figures / to be thinking of things very three-dimensionally even when it Wasn't actually like, animation or an elaborate still life. like evidently my own art is very Line focused but i would say i'm also definitely thinking of figures as 3D like this / striving for the linework serving that too, or just generally striving for more [the Geometry works "realistically" despite obvious stylization, as it clearly does w/lackadaisy]

Hey so I’ve picked up quite a few people since yesterday morning so hi! I’m Lou or Wicked. I’m a US-based artist, 100% self-taught, trying to make something I love to do into something I can afford to do.
Here’s some important links!
MY CARRD - This includes all other important links, plus a selection of some of my favorite pieces. COMMISSION INFO HERE! As long as there are slots, I am accepting commissions. They are currently my primary form of income.
MY ETSY - This is where I beg people to like my art enough that they exchange money for goods with my art printed on it. (Yes etsy sucks. unfortunately they’re the best option when you’re just getting started due to low upfront costs and various other reasons.)
MY KO-FI - You can find all of my linework pieces here as downloadable coloring pages for $3.50 each. You’ll also find YCH commissions here!
MY PATREON - Still a work-in-progress, but I’m hoping to set up monthly sticker tiers and mug tiers soon.
And Lastly!!
I AM HOSTING A GIVEAWAY AND GRAND OPENING FOR MY ETSY OVER ON INSTAGRAM PLEASE CHECK IT OUT!!

I feel you on losing the spark to create anything big or ambitious. It feels like my output for the last two years has been primarily sketches and other small, quick things. When I started drawing and few years ago, I was trying a lot more to figure things out and make bigger pieces with an actual idea behind them or learn about composition and all that. Now like 80% of my art is doodles in my sketchbook because I can never sit down to do some big piece with thought behind it.
(cont) Partially I'm fine with it because I do think I'm acquiring some more technical skill such as doing better linework or learning a little more about anatomy but in other ways it feels like my head is stuck in a cave and I just don't have the brainspace or energy to come up with interesting concepts or actual ideas anymore.
I think for what it's worth it may be a good thing to just do something just to keep the gears moving and gaining the mileage. I also have to say that it is just fine to do sketches and doodles as long as you enjoy it. I think it's when you feel like something is missing or you're not getting the same kind of fulfillment or joy out of what you do that it might be time to do something about it. I think the combination of losing the spark but still keeping up the grind can potentially lead to a burn out of sorts (not talking about the kind of physical/mental exhaustion necessarily but creative burnout).
In the past two to three years my art has been mostly just simple drawings without an actual idea or a thing I would like to communicate. I do have a ton of different ideas for bigger pieces but starting on any of them feels daunting.
Time is one aspect. There is never enough of it these days and I feel like the little free time I have is squeezed in between deadlines and schedules. I think the kind of creativity and art making I'm missing requires a certain kind of fluidity, breathing space. Not a time slot that I must use effectively.
External and internal expectations and demands are definitely a factor for me and while I have kind of been able to detach from social media a bit and only using it as a dumping ground (against all social media tips) but it frees up some of my mental space at least.
I just miss the feeling of being really inspired by something and giving into the feeling. Like when I used to make pieces inspired by songs. I would just listen to the song and get fully immersed and just draw and paint whatever it was that I saw or felt. Now I feel like just when I manage to grasp that feeling I can't keep a hold of it. I know it is there but I feel like I am pushing it away. it's not just the external limitations like time but I think I'm actively repelling the surge and telling myself "later" and eventually it just fades. I fear it might not come back some day.
I wish I could just tell myself that yes, now! Let's do it!
Looking back at all the things that I made with so much passion, my art, my comic, even my commission pieces seemed to have more soul in it. I do feel at a loss. It's really sad.

Art Advice #4 - A Beginner’s Guide to Digital Art
Hi all!
This weeks entry into my Art Advice tag, where I offer various advice for artists of any skill level, is about digital art! Now, I am by no means an expert at digital (I’ve been doing it for nearly 8 years at this point and that is almost entirely self taught), but I have picked up a few pointers in that time which will hopefully help anyone just starting out!
(this blogpost is a little over 2000 words long btw)
A Beginner’s Guide to Digital Art
I know that the world of digital art has changed drastically in the 8 odd years since I started, but I’d still say that some of the options I started out with will be just as good for anyone who’s starting out now!
As always, I’ll be splitting this into sections to make it easier for you to navigate this post!
Part 1 - Equipment/Hardware
There are a lot of drawing tablet options on the market at the moment, and I’m not going to pretend that I know anything about half of them lol. But I think for a beginner, don’t worry about going for the most expensive option, even if the reviews are really good or your favourite artist uses it, especially if it is way above your budget!
An important thing to know is that there are two types of tablet. One is the plug-in kind. These are essentially a pad which you plug into your laptop or computer and draw on that whilst looking at the screen (they basically work the same way as a plug in mouse works). The other kind is the screen variety, which is a lot more like what most of us know as ‘tablets’ nowadays. And you draw directly onto the screen.
Tumblr media
(a plug-in vs on screen tablet, both from Wacom)
Now, as for choosing between these, it is honestly a personal choice. But I’d say if you’re just wanting to try digital and you’re on a budget, a plug-in tablet can be really useful since it gets you used to the mechanics of what digital is like, and they are often significantly cheaper than the screen alternatives. I would say that plug-in tablets are a big learning curve, especially if you’re used to doing traditional stuff, but I do know a lot of professional artists who still use this kind of tablet when doing their work, so if it’s something you can get used to I would definitely consider it! Also, they’re often a lot more portable than some screen tablets! The first one I had was a Huion (a model so old that I can’t even find a link to it now lol), and I also know that Wacom are a well known brand that do some decent plug-in tablet. I’d recommend you do your own research on other brands and options, though!
Screen tablets are often a lot more expensive, but if you’re used to traditional art, they are a lot easier to get a handle of! But I know if you already have something like an iPad, or other general use tablets, then they offer apps that you can use to draw on (as well as things like the Apple pen, or other stylus’). The big difference between using these general tablets and ones specifically designed for drawing is pretty much purely a personal choice. I personally prefer the bigger screen of my XP-Pen tablet, along with a special screen protector that removes the shininess of the tablet screen and makes it feel more like ‘paper’ over when I used a general use tablet it draw. But if you already have an iPad, or something similar, then it’s honestly a really great starting point!
I think it’s important for me to mention that you don’t need fancy equipment to be an artist. The incredible Elicia Donze has revealed countless times how she has very basic equipment but still manages to produce the most stunning artworks! All you really need is some kind of drawing apparatus and a lot of patience lol! Getting good at any kind of art takes a lot of time and effort, but I would definitely say it’s worth it when you’re able to look back at your progress!
Part 2 - Software/Drawing Programs
Much like with the hardware discussion, choosing which program to use is entirely down to personal preference. I personally have never really liked Photoshop purely because it’s really complicated, but I know so many artists swear by it.
I think the main aspect to consider when you’re starting out is whether you want to pay for a program. Software like Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint and Procreate are some of the popular ones I hear about a lot of people using, but all require you to purchase or subscribe to them. So if you’re young or on a very tight budget, I’d honestly recommend the free alternative versions of these, such as Krita (Krita is quite a large program, but it has a lot of really awesome features and is very similar to Photoshop!), Gimp (this one is similar to Krita, but has slightly less options, I’d honestly recommend Gimp for anyone who does photo editing though!) or FireAlpaca (this is the one I use, by the way and it’s a pretty simple program, but has a lot of fantastic features and is perfect for how I work!). These don’t have as many features as some of the paid alternatives, but I honestly think all you really need to start digital art is some kind of ‘canvas’ and set of brushes!
Another great free program for beginners I’d recommend is MyPaint, which is great for doodling and just getting used to how digital art feels in comparison to traditional! It also has a bunch of ‘traditional style’ brushes, to make it look like charcoal or watercolour (which I’m sure the paid alternatives have too, but it’s always better when it’s free, I find lol...)
Tumblr media
(this is an example of a drawing I did on MyPaint using the ‘charcoal’ effect brush!)
Most of the sites are pretty self explanatory, with sections dedicated to different brushes (I’ll go into the types of brushes later on in this post btw!), adjusting brush size, shape and opacity, a colour wheel, etc. You also have a section dedicated to ‘layers’ (another thing I’ll go into more detail later), and various ‘filters’ and editing options and effects you can add to your work to make it more interesting!
I’d really just recommend playing around with programs until you find your one!
Part 3 - The Pros of Digital Art!
I realise this section should probably earlier in this blog post lol, but I kinda wanted to go into what digital art can achieve in comparison to traditional art, and how beginner artists can utilise this!
I definitely didn’t take advantage of certain aspects of digital art when I first got into it, and they’re things that would have definitely made my life a whole lot easier lol!
Digital art allows you to tweak drawings as you do them. So if you accidentally drew the eye too far to the right, then you can easily move it to the right place. (I usually do this by selecting whichever area is wrong, cutting it out and then pasting it into a new area... And yes, there is probably a better and quick way of doing this but...I haven’t found that way yet lol...). And I honestly think that this has allowed me to look a lot more at a reference image in order to figure out where I’ve gone wrong with a drawing! Whereas with traditional art, I usually spend so long trying to get an eye right, that even if it’s slightly in the wrong place, I don’t want to completely redo that section. Digital allows you to completely rub out sections without leaving indents, which is honestly such a saving grace!
Another pro of digital is the Undo/Ctrl Z function! This means you can easily go back to before you made a major mistake with just a click of Ctrl Z... Though I have to say that this function has honestly ruined traditional art for me... Oh what wouldn’t I give for a real life Ctrl Z... But yeah, this is a great part of digital art and definitely something you will grow to love lol!
Another great thing about digital is that it allows you to flip and turn a canvas as you’re drawing on it. I spent a lot of time trying to turn my tablet around in order to draw certain parts of a piece before I realised you can turn the canvas itself without having to move yourself or your tablet!
Layers are another part of digital that can be super useful, and I have to be honest but I don’t really use them a lot. I know a lot of artists create layers for every section of their artworks (so, one for the linework, one for colouring, a separate one for the background, etc etc...). And there’s something really great about being able to paint without worrying about smudging into a previous section of the painting. This works well for my work since I do a lot of bright backgrounds. I also often create a lot of ‘versions’ of my works, so it’s useful to be able to change the background without affecting the main figure of the piece! (I have to say that I often work in one big layer when I’m doing paintings, just because I like how it feels more like ‘traditional’ art that way, but layers are such a brilliant tool, and definitely something you should play around with!)
The eyedropper tool is another one that is really useful! Although I never colour pick from my reference photos, I know some artists find this useful when they were just starting out (especially if you’re not sure what colour to make shadows or how to mix skin tones, etc etc). The eyedropper basically means you don’t need to mix your colours every time
Part 4 - Just some other things I wish I had known about when I was starting out lol...
This last section is just dedicated to a few things that I would have liked to have known when I was just starting out all those years ago.
First one is fluffy/textured brushes!
I spent most of my art life from 2013 until 2016 using ‘round’ brushes which are notoriously hard to blend with, so I’d recommend either downloading some fluffy/textured brushes (DeviantArt was where I got mine from a few years back, but there are probably other places you can get them for free too!) to your program of choice, since most of the programs I’ve used haven’t had fluffy/textured brushes as pre-set.
I may make another post about how I blend in my artworks if that’s something people would be interested in?
Tumblr media
(this is an example of textured brush blending vs round brush blending... I usually opt for round brushes for rougher blending styles and the textured brushes for more smooth and ‘realistic’ blending... for a lot of pieces, though, I use both brushes (the round brushes are good for details!) in the same way that you use different sized brushes for real paintings!)
The next thing I wish I’d discovered earlier is the Brush Stabiliser option. Some programs may do this automatically, but the one I use (FireAlpaca) requires you to manually change the amount of stabilising you have on your brush. This is particularly useful if you want to draw neat lines or straight lines (the stabiliser essentially slows down the ‘ink’ as you’re drawing). I only recently started using the stabiliser, and although I still like having it mostly turned ‘off’ for doing sketchy work, it does make doing line work a lot easier, and also gives pieces a more polished look!
Next advice is to explore all the options you can in whatever program you use!
I feel like with certain programs, you can get overwhelmed by choice and you end up just using a few of the functions. But I’d really recommend just playing around with these programs, trying all the filters and editing options to get used to how the program works. You can often find interesting ways to adjust your artworks this way! In a way I’d recommend this way of working more than finding tutorials made by other people... Unless there’s a specific function you want to learn how to do, just having fun with digital art is a major part of it’s appeal to me!
~
There are probably a lot of other options I could go into, but this is already over 2000 words long, so I’ll leave it here for now lol! (I may do a part 2 though so... keep a look out for that!)
As always, if you have any questions to things I’ve said here, or are just looking for more advice, don’t hesitate to message me!
And if you like my work on here (art & blog posts) feel free to support me on my Ko-Fi! <3

“Elegant Chaos.”
You test the name out on your tongue, staring up at the slightly grimy neon sign of the shop. The entire front is one-way glass, so all you can see is your own reflection and the ones of the people bustling around you.
Before you can make up a decision to open the door to the store or not, someone else does; a pretty brunette woman steps out and smiles at you, crazy beautiful with full lips and crescent-eyes. “Hi. Can I help you?”
“Uh, yeah.” You show her the printed-out address your friend sent you and step a bit closer. “Is this a tattoo shop? I searched the address up but nothing resulted, I was referred by a friend.”
She barely takes a glance at the address before flashing another bright grin. “Oh, yep! This is our tattoo shop, we opened a couple months ago. It’s weird that we’re still not showing up, but oh, well. Want to come in?”
You barely register her quick words but step into the shop after her, the smell of rubbing alcohol, paper, and perfume vaguely stinging your nose. “I’m Solar, the receptionist,” she introduces, walking behind what you presume to be her desk. Out front, some teenagers talk quietly, a tall, dark-haired boy with a sleeve sipping at a banana milk.
“Cool. Uh, I’m Y/N. I don’t have an appointment, is that okay?”
Solar nods, tapping at her phone. “Sure. Jungkook over there is just waiting for Byul to finish her other client, and Wheein is prepping to pierce the kids. Hwasa’s our best artist, anyway, does that sound good?”
Her question startles you from staring at the intricate sketches taped all over the walls, the same 3 signatures stamped everywhere. “What?”
She laughs, though it’s not rude. “We have one artist left, Hwasa, but since you’re referred, you probably don’t have someone in mind, right? You can go to see her now, she’s free.”
“Great. Do I just...?” At Solar’s nod, you walk past her and into the back. The studio’s quite small, to be honest; there are 4 stations, two of them occupied. One of them, who you guess is Byul, is tattooing an elderly man, her sleeves rolled up to reveal the art on her bicep.
The second, probably Wheein, is wiping down her tools, and she’s the first to notice you. “Hi!” she grins, turning the music blasting from the radio down with her ungloved hand. “Can I help you?”
“Yeah. Solar mentioned that I should come find Hwasa,” you explain, eyes widening at the complicated art being tattooed on the elderly man. “Are you...?”
“No, I’m Wheein.” Ah, so you were right. “This is Byul, she’s a bit preoccupied,” Wheein smiles, dimples poking into her cheeks. “I’ll get Hye- sorry, Hwasa for you.”
She hurries out to the back, and you can hear talking through the open door, before she comes back, the woman you presume to be Hwasa behind her.
Instantly, you’re starstruck; she’s stunning in a way that’s completely unique, long dark hair and tanned skin contrasting beautifully. The only makeup she wears is a bold red lipstick, her tank top showing the delicate tattoos she has. “Hey, I’m Hwasa,” she greets, sticking her hand out. Her nails are long, too.
“Y/N.” You accept the handshake, trying not to stare. “Uh, Solar said you were free for a consultation?”
“Yeah.” She sits at one of the free stations, clearing the things scattered on the table. “So, what’re you looking for? Do you already have a design chosen or am I freehanding?”
You fumble in your bag for a piece of paper, sliding it over to Hwasa. “Um, this is just something my friend drew up for me. I want it pretty small, on my forearm.”
The dark-haired woman shrugs, unfolding the paper. “I could do that. Is this your first tattoo?”
Nodding, you watch as Hwasa taps her long, red-painted nails on the desk. “Okay. Is this part of a sleeve or by itself?”
“Uh, how long would each one take?” To be honest, you have no idea why you said that; you didn’t consider a sleeve at all, though you considered multiple tattoos or a large one. There’s just something about the other woman that makes it impossible for you to think.
She considers the question before answering, “Depends on the size and how many small ones you want to work in for the sleeve, but I’d recommend a separate session for each small square, so maybe 8 or 10. I’ll be done with this in less than 30 minutes, though, if it’s just the one.”
To be honest, the only thing causing you to consider a sleeve is getting to see Hwasa again, and you curse your own attraction to her when you blurt, “Maybe a sleeve? I have to think about the other ones I want to work in, though.”
“Okay. I can just do the one today, and we can schedule another day for you to come in and design the whole thing,” she offers, picking the sketch up. “I’ll go make this into a stencil, then.”
“Sure.”
When she takes the sketch and walks to the back room, you slump down in the chair and pivot to look at the others. You quickly realize how long you were talking with Hwasa; Byul is already working on the coconut-haired boy, and Wheein is already done with the teenagers.
She seems to be the outgoing type, and waves at you while sanitizing her needles and packing her kit up again. “So, how did it go? Are you going to start today?”
“I am, yep. You’re already done with the kids?”
Wheein nods, placing the studs back into their cases. “Yep. They just wanted more lobe piercings, it’s really easy. I’m a tattoo artist, too, but I think the kids like me more. Except for Jungkook over here, they think Byul’s intimidating.”
“I’m not!” the other woman protests, hands still steady as she works on the boy. Her voice is deeper than you’d expect. “You literally call me a hamster.”
Flapping a hand, Wheein flashes you her dimples again. “So, what do you think of Hwasa?”
“Huh?” you blink, brain basically short-circuiting. “Uh, she’s a good artist? I saw some of her sketches, yours too; you’re all really talented.”
“No, no, that’s not what I mean. Wait, you’re not straight, are you?” she narrows her eyes at you, scanning you from head to toe. “Maybe my sense is broken, I didn’t peg you for a...”
“I’m not. Straight. I’m a lesbian.” Your cheeks burn to say it aloud, though nobody really reacts, not even Jungkook. “Are you?”
Wheein shrugs, “I mean, I’m attracted to women. All 4 of us are- Hyejin, Byul, Yongsun. Solar, to you. And we make sure everyone who comes in is accepting, we won’t serve bigots.”
For whatever reason, you’re almost relieved to hear that Hwasa’s also attracted to women in some sense, even though it doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s attracted to you. “Oh. That’s cool.”
“Yeah. So, is it just one tattoo or a sleeve?” Her knowing smile puts you off a bit; how did she figure it out? “A lot of girls who come in here change their original idea because of Hyejin-ah. You’re obviously attracted to her, to, so it’s no surprise.”
“Is it really that obvious?” you groan, surprising yourself with how open you’re being about it. “Do you think she knows?”
“Probably,” Wheein giggles, nodding when Solar pokes her head in the studio to tell her something. “Anyway. I’ve got to go, good luck!”
She waves as she leaves, the only noise left in the studio being the quiet music and Jungkook’s quiet talking. He seems just as awkward as you are, lifting his free hand in a half wave.
You’re saved by Hwasa returning with a stencil. “Here. Does that look good?”
She’s modified the original design just the tiniest bit, making the lines a little bit darker and the shading simpler, and it looks... “Perfect.” You grin, a weight on your chest lifted by your conversation with Wheein. “Should we start?”
“Sure.” She brings you over to one of the actual tattoo stations, the seat already smelling sanitized. You can barely listen as she explains what the process will be like- cleaning, the actual tattooing, pain; you finally come to when she asks, “Are you ready?”
“I... yeah. I am.”
It’s quiet until the buzzing of the tattoo gun brings you to life, the tiniest bit of fear sour on your tongue. Hwasa looks concentrated as she peels the stencil off, not exactly reassuring, either. “So. Is there a meaning behind this?”
“Uh, not really. Are there meanings behind yours?” You gasp when the needle first touches your skin, the cold wipe taking off excess ink.
“I have some matching tattoos with Wheein,” Hwasa explains, smiling at the mention of the other girl. “Uh, one is Maria, my Christian name. Wheein has more, but all of us have some kind of meaning behind ours. It’s not bad to have no meaning, though.”
You wince as she continues with the linework, slowly getting used to the pain. “Are you and Wheein...”
She looks up, raising an eyebrow. “Together? No, we’re best friends. I haven’t been with someone in a few years.”
“What’s stopping you?”
Hwasa laughs, wiping your arm once again. “Nothing, I guess. I’m just patient enough to wait for the right person.”
“Patient. Right.”
Conversation flows smoothly, mostly light topics. You learn each other’s ages, and you’re told to call Hwasa ‘Hyejin’ instead. You learn when she got her first tattoo, and when she learned to tattoo others. The more you talk, the more drawn in you are, fascinated by her every word.
The half an hour is over far too fast. “Done,” she announces, smiling as she turns off her gun. “Take a look.”
It looks gorgeous, as expected, though Hwasa plays off your barrage of compliments. “Uh, should I pay now?”
She shrugs, placing saran wrap over your arm. “We’ll go talk with Solar about that, she’s better with pricing than I am. But it probably won’t be much.”
“What? Why?” you frown, examining the tattoo. Usually, discounts only happen when something goes wrong, or you have a coupon. You’re pretty sure neither of those things apply.
Hwasa pauses, turning to send you a small smirk. “Well, the cute ones usually pay less.”
Your heart practically stops, though you force yourself to walk to the front with her. “Besides, you’re probably coming back again soon, right?”
“Oh! Uh, yeah. I think so. When will that be? The next session, I mean.”
She frowns, tapping at the tablet Solar hands her. “You can come in as soon as you’re free to design it, if you want, but you have to wait a bit for the next session, especially if you’re doing the things close together. If you want, I can give you my number.”
At your stricken expression, Hwasa’s lips curve into a knowing smile. “So you can send me ideas, for the sleeve.”
“Ah, of course.” Your cheeks burn as you take out your cash, counting out a surprisingly small amount. “That sounds good. I guess I’ll just have to be patient, then.”
“I guess so. Call me, Y/N,” she smiles, handing your phone back with a new contact in.
Being patient is going to be so damn hard.

kabuto x sai, college au, enemies to lovers ish, same age au
this is my first server collab with @konoblog-simps! the prompt was college au for august, and you can see the rest of the multifandom fics and artwork here!
***
As a biochemistry major focused on pharmaceuticals with a five year plan included finishing this undergrad degree, moving across the country for a masters in organic chemistry, then likely moving again for a doctorate in organic, along with four internships along the way, so that he could become a renowned creator of antianxiety medications, he was pretty confident in his knowledge. There was nothing a chemistry professor could ask that he couldn’t answer. Calculus came to him as a breeze. His psychology courses presented absolutely no challenge to him. Statistics, courses in professionalism and building his portfolio, and meetings with potential employers never caused him to break a sweat.
This fucking art class might kill him, though.
He had resented for years that humanities courses were required in science degree paths. It was his junior year and he had fought with his advisor for the past four semesters before finally giving in and agreeing to take a class on charcoal sketching. There was no way he would be caught dead in the hugely popular pottery class taught by the blond professor with tattoos of mouths on the back of his hands. Nor would he voluntarily take any basic introductory course in drawing or painting.
That was how he found himself in an advanced charcoal techniques course, prepared to blow through a handful of drawings and easily earn high marks.
However, in a class size of eight, he was drawing attention for the wrong reasons.
To start, the others all seemed to know each other from previous courses, which immediately made him the outsider. To make matters worse, the professor greatly preferred their work to his own. A part of him couldn’t blame the man who insisted he be called Tenzo rather than by any title or honorific. His drawings were definitely in a different style to the rest of the class, and it was a style that didn’t seem to be changing or improving as the weeks passed.
It wouldn’t be so frustrating if it wasn’t the first thing he had ever tried that was proving to be a struggle. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, the asshole in the front row seemed to take to charcoal like breathing.
On the first day, when Tenzo had gone over the syllabus, he had also made them all introduce themselves and play a get to know you game. They all pretended that it wasn’t for Kabuto’s benefit. Fu and Torune had begun, making a point of making physical contact with each other the whole time they spoke, though he had never seen Torune take off his gloves. The had tuned most of the others out as they spoke, noting Shin seemed decent enough, though he’d prefer if the man stopped coughing for more than a moment. What grated him to no end was the final person to speak.
Sai.
He spoke with a fake smile plastered across his face, eyes closed and voice dripping with confidence. He listed his credentials off without any thought, and it infuriated him that the list of accomplishments and certifications rivaled the length of his own. Sai listed his specialty in art as black and white realism, and his preferred medium as painting, though he was looking forward to learning more about charcoal. From there, he had turned to Kabuto with that same overly-relaxed smile and offered:
“Your turn, flash cards.”
The familiarity rubbed him the wrong way and he had been irritated with him ever since. What made it worse was that Sai was actually really good in the course. He hadn’t been lying about his skill in realism—anything he rendered looked like it was about to run off the page. He seemed to prefer birds, in all species, but every individual feather breathed and flowed and he never got the black dust accidentally smudged on his paper. In fact, he never got the dust anywhere. Kabuto always left the class covered in black smears on his skin, clothing, and bag, and there would always be some hidden patch of charcoal that he never found until he showered that night.
It infuriated him to no end that this shallow jerk who modelled his personality around whoever he was with was also, genuinely, so much better than him at this class that he desperately needed to pass.
Midterm grades had come back the other day and a vein had nearly popped out of his forehead when he saw the disastrously low score. Tenzo had noted that he saw improvement between this and where Kabuto had began the class, but it was still not on level with the rest of the class and where he would need to be in preparation for the next level pastels course. Apparently, it didn’t matter that he wouldn’t be taking the next level course. If he didn’t pass this course with a reasonably high grade, his scholarship sponsor, Orochimaru, would be furious. Risking the scholarship not being renewed meant risking the entire five year plan, and for that—
He’d have to suck it up.
“Hey, Sai?” he asked, forcing himself to keep his tone level. Admitting weakness was not his strength and he had no intention of making this a habit.
The crop top wearer glanced up from the hyper-realistic sheet of mice that he was effortlessly rendering. “Ah, Kabuto,” he said, the same smile from before falling across his face. “Lovely weather we’re having, isn’t it?”
He gritted his teeth, then forced his jaw to relax. “The rain we’ve had all week? Sure, Sai.” He pulled up a stool, settling in to the easel next to him. “I wanted to ask you a question.”
Sai nodded, not pausing his movement as he gave life to a mouse’s tail. “My answer is yes.”
Kabuto blinked. Was asking for help really this simple? “You’re willing to tutor me for the final?”
That caused Sai to hesitate, tilting his head slightly to the side. After a beat, he replied “I suppose I could do that. You appear to be capable of learning how to improve your questionable techniques.”
Ignoring the dig, he pressed on. “I would appreciate that. Tenzo said that my linework is improving but my shading is still not where it needs to be. Something about being more mindful of my light sources.”
“I agree with his analysis,” Sai said, continuing on his sketch. “Your grasp of line weight is abysmal, which is a step up from your initial attempt, which was horrific. Your shading on our last assignment, the brickwork, was essentially nonexistent. All of your pieces so far have had at least four light sources that have no apparent source. It’s clear from your work that you have no regard for art and no passion for creation at all.”
He delivered the critique without halting a single graceful stroke on his canvas. There was no malice in his tone, and he said the words almost pleasantly, despite the cutting content.
“I am willing to teach you more technique and skill so that Tenzo is able to assign you a passing grade in this course. However, I do not believe you are capable of being an artist or creating anything of value in the world as you currently are.”
Kabuto froze. He had only meant to ask for a few tips, not to be dragged for all he was worth in this godforsaken art course. How dare this arrogant prick think he was incapable of creation?
He gripped his charcoal stick so tightly in his fist that it crumbled. “Listen, inky. Just because I’m focused in science doesn’t mean I can’t create anything meaningful. My goal is to be a pharmaceutical chemist, to create medications to change people’s lives. Just because I can’t draw some fucking—I don’t know, a fucking rat or a bowl of fruit or whatever, doesn’t make you better than me. So fuck off with that.”
Sai smirked, his eyes closing in his familiar pattern. “I never implied anything about our worth relative to each other. But I do think that it’s cute that you’re concerned about appearing to be less than me. That will create an excellent motivation for self-improvement for both of us in our relationship.”
The light caught Kabuto’s glasses, a white reflection flashing across the lenses. “We don’t have a relationship.”
Finally, Sai put his rectangle of charcoal down on the easel and sat up. “Do we not? What was the intent of your original question to me?”
Kabuto spluttered. “What do you mean? I came up and asked if you’d help me with the final and you said yes, then you were an ass.”
It was now Sai’s turn to blink. “You said that you had a question for me. I replied that my answer was yes. As a result, we are now boyfriends.” He wiped his fingers on a handkerchief hanging on the corner of his easel. “Was your question you intended to ask me not if I would be interested in a romantic relationship with you?”
He flushed a deep red. Sai was attractive, that was undeniable, but that was not how this encounter was meant to go. Romance was not in the five year plan. “I—”
“Just do it,” sighed Tenzo, sitting at his desk with his head in his hands. “For the love of God, both of you, stop staring at each other and bickering and just go out, would you?”
Sai smiled, the classic closed-eye smile that looked more genuine each time he did it. “Thank you, Tenzo.”
Kabuto was confused, but in order to learn the skills he needed to pass this class, he’d need to go along with the game. Without another word, he reached out and took Sai’s hand. Might as well give it a shot, right?

11. For any OC, write what their bio would be on a dating website. (If they wouldn’t be interested, write how they’d describe themself to a job interviewer.) I mean this sounds like a fun one for Taren =)
Make me start a new modern au, why don't you? Thanks for the ask, my brain just went WRITING PROMPT?!? and now here we are. Modern tattoo shop au oneshot where Taren's friends convince him to make a profile (read: make it for him while he protests) on a casual dating app, he wants no part of this until he matches with a certain someone... More of this is on AO3 now, it’s gonna be short and stupid and sexy ;) --
"No," Taren shook his head, resolute.
"Oh come on, it's true," Sera whined in protest, her fast fingers continuing to tap away at his phone screen, making no moves to amend any of her latest additions to the profile she'd been embellishing with exaggerated details of his skills and hobbies.
"You are not putting 'exceptionally skilled with hands’ under talents." Taren crossed his arms, and leaned back against the long, bent-back seat at his station while the other elf pouted across from him, sitting cross-legged on her own, her short blond hair pulled up into a high ponytail that bobbed with her excited bounces.
"It is true, boss." Bull cut in helpfully. He took a few steps over from his own section of the studio, his great, horned head peering down at the screen over Sera's shoulder.
"Can't you just put what it says on the website?"
"Your business profile?" Sera scoffed, "'Tattoo artist specializing in fine linework' doesn't really have the same ring, T."
"You're trying to get laid, not get new clients." Bull agreed, and then both of them were nodding at him eagerly.
"I'm not trying to get anything." Taren pointed out, crossing his arms.
"Oh that's right, your two best friends are trying to get you laid, you're just making it stupidly difficult." Sera noted without looking up from his phone, "how about this one?"
She turned the screen to him, displaying a candid shot of him looking particularly focused, tattoo gun in hand, as he bent over an out-of-frame limb, only a bit of anonymous client elbow showing. He remembered the tattoo: the elbow was one of Sera's, and he'd needed to focus for the long line of an arrow down her bicep which connected with an ornate bow design over her shoulder. It was a good shot, he supposed. His hair was tied back and you could see all of his own tattoos as they travelled down his high cheeks and wound around his neck. It had been summer when the photo was taken, and his arms looked tan and a bit more muscled than they were now, tensing as they clutched the heavy device, more tattoos on display up his right bicep.
"Shouldn't I be...smiling?" he asked, crinkling a brow at the photo. He looked sort of stern in it, which didn’t exactly seem representative.
“No,” said Bull, “you want something that says mystery. Cool, aloof.” The tall Qunari took the phone from Sera and began scrolling through Taren’s camera roll, occasionally stopping to nod sagely as Sera pointed out photos to add to the profile page.
“I am neither cool nor aloof, and you know it.” Taren said with a huff.
“We know it, dudes don’t.” Sera shrugged, “this one,” she turned the phone again, and in this picture at least he had half a smile. He was also shirtless, the shot having been taken on a camping trip some autumn when the afternoons were still hot, and someone had snapped the photo of him when he’d been happy and relaxed by the lake under a setting sun. Hair down, neck arched back, a few fewer tattoos across his ribs than there were now, and he’d been skinnier, too. He also knew exactly who had taken the photo: the very reason his two best friends were insisting on building this profile in the first place.
“No.” he said.
“Oh come on, you look great there.” Bull protested, “If that crossed my screen I’d red-heart it.” “I don’t know what that means.”
“It means I’d try to meet up and fuck,” Bull smirked, “no questions asked.” he winked.
“That picture’s two years old,” Taren blushed despite himself, “and I keep telling you, I’m not trying to get —”
“Yeah, yeah, love is dead and the internet killed it.” Sera interrupted. “Alright, ‘Taren Lavellan, 29,”
“I’m 30,”
“Age: 29, height: five-foot-eight,”
“Seven. Five seven,”
“Hair: red,”
“Nah, say like, auburn or chestnut or something,” Bull interrupted, “it’s his best feature, give it some credit.”
“Fine,” Sera erased and retyped a word, “auburn, then. Eyes — what colour are your eyes? Green?”
“Green,” Taren agreed with a shrug.
“Andraste’s ass. Green with specks of gold, green-hazel, marbled sage, undefinable. They’re your best feature —”
“— I thought that was my hair,” Taren raised an eyebrow, examining Bull with one amused, undefinable and gold-speckled eye.
“There’s a measurement spot for best features, but it’s optional.” Sera noted with a smirk.
Bull returned Taren’s raised eyebrow with one of his own.
“Fuck off, no.” said Taren.
“Alright, hobbies: drawing, reading, camping,” Sera listed, “Maker, you’re boring.”
“Hey!”
“Bull, what did you put in yours?”
“Fighting, drinking, and fucking.” Bull grinned.
“You can’t be serious.” Taren sighed.
“Works every time. And hey, it’s true.”
“At least call it, like, mountain climbing, backcountry survival, wilderness adventuring, I don’t know. Something cool.” Sera advised with a shake of her head.
“It’s not an extreme sport to go backpacking for fun. Camping’s fine.” Taren rolled his eyes.
Sera rolled hers right back, “normal people don’t go camping like you go camping, elfy.”
“What else does it want?” Taren prodded her on impatiently.
“Special skills and talents: speaks six languages, exceptionally good with hands”
“Sera,”
“Fine, fine. I don’t know…” Sera looked to Bull searchingly.
“How about knot-tying skills?”
“Yes!”
“No.” Taren shook his head resolutely once more.
“You’re no fun.” Sera complained, still typing away at the screen, “there, and just hit green to go.” Sera held out the phone face up, a green confirmation button sitting at the ready to create his new dating app profile. “You do the honours,” she nodded.
Taren sighed, “and then what?”
“Sit back and wait for the love to pour in,” The Iron Bull replied, leaning back against his station. “Twenty bucks says you’re drowning in dick by the weekend.”
“Gross!” Sera objected with a cackle, while Taren winced.
“Yeah, I’m actually with Sera on that.”
“All I’m saying is you’ll get asks. It’s a casual app, take advantage if you want to.”
“So it’s always just for sex?”
Bull shrugged. “Just because it’s casual doesn’t mean you can’t find people who are looking, but I thought you weren’t looking —”
“— I’m not,” Taren interrupted with a flustered blush, “but what if I’m not looking for sex either?”
Bull shrugged again, “then just don’t send any hearts, that simple.” he said, “or you can always ask to get coffee and see what happens.”
Taren sighed, “sure,” he muttered as he moved his thumb to confirm the profile’s creation, “coffee.”
