May I ask how you shade skin? No worries if not!! Im obsessed w the way you render

Well thank you very much, I'm flattered. Sure, I'd be happy to try and share my skin routine with you!

I think one of the main things I began doing a while back with painting skin that's really helped it look more lively is diversifying the colours you can see on it. Adding various warm and cool tones can really help emphasize any shading! I'll use my Klavier and Daryan illustration to show what I mean as I still have a layered version.

Above are the boys with a 50% grey base layer. Notice the hints of blue, red, and yellow about the skin that can't be seen on Daryan's jacket, for example? That is what I'll be referring to!

I'll typically start with basic skin tones for the character (above) and on two separate layers begin to paint on some variations of red, orange and/or yellow (layer 1) and blue, teal, and/or purple (layer 2). I typically already have the opacity on these layers down, but just to kinda show you the types of colours I may use and where I place them, this is the kind of monstrosity I create:

In my experience, Yellow is a good neutral zone addition, Red is great for places with a lot of blood flow like cheeks or fingers, and Blue is good for areas that may not get full exposer to the light source(s). I was first taught a real simple gradient down the face of yellow (brows), red (cheeks/nose), and blue (chin, jawline) for faces. Then as you get more comfortable with slapping them on the canvas, go a little wild with it and start intermingling the colours like adding blue on the eye lids or red on the lips, for example.

For Layer 1, or our warm red/orange/yellow colours, I typically set the layer style to something like a Multiply and lower the opacity to 15-30% depending on the skin tones and image's lighting.

For Layer 2, or our cool blue/teal/purple colours, I do a highlight layer style with Overlay typically being a nice safe pick. For this layer I generally stay around 20-45% opacity. After you have that all set, you'll get something like this:

Which is thankfully not quite as jarring as the other version haha. From here, I start shading normally! I typically use 2-5 shading and highlight layers, depending completely on the lighting of the piece. For skin specifically, I try to keep a smooth gradient or matte look to these areas with a soft brush and blending. Back lighting and colours from the surroundings generally seem to bounce off skin well so I tend to utilise a lot of that too.

In the end I wind up with the top(which I now realise was a pretty bad example image to use as they are in a SPOT LIGHT I'm so sorry) and also added the version without the extra colours for comparison(bottom):

I know it's nothing SUPER noticeable in this piece if you're not looking for it, but that's also the point! It's a little bit of flavour without being a distraction. I've personally really enjoyed the overall look of the skin I've painted since incorporating this.

On the other hand, when it comes my single layer paintings (using my recent painting of Beanix as an example,) I couldn't really tell you my process besides throwing colours at the canvas and seeing what sticks. I still try to incorporate the "sway my colour towards yellow here, change the hue to a bit more blue there," but there isn't much method to my madness outside of that. Just have fun with it!

ok this all started w bulks post about “abby” meaning “father’s joy” and it got me thinking about the contrast between cecil’s relationship with his mom versus the relationship i imagine between abby and her dad. fair warning that this mostly exists in my head but u bet ur burger im still gonna try to back up my ideas w quotes from the text (AP lit and lang babey).

first of all, looking at cecil’s relationship with his mom is super important. one of the first things we hear about her is that she used to hide from cecil for days and that she covered all the mirrors in their house (33). she also tells cecil to “beware, be warned, be wary”, which she apparently says to everything and cecil interprets to mean that she’s proud of him. we also hear in “Homecoming” (55) that cecil looks forward to seeing his mom every year at the homecoming game and was disappointed when he wasn’t able to. in “It Sticks With You” (182), we learn their mother would take them into the woods and walk quickly, cecil saying, “I think she wanted to lose us in the shadowy labyrinth of tall trees.” she would leave flowers at the base of the same old tree every time. she would ignore cecil’s questions. in “Bedtime Story” (132), which im convinced is about cecil (but that’s another post), cecil says “he just wanted his mother to show interest in his curiosity.” and even if that story isn’t about him, it is a story his mother would tell him at night, one he never heard the end of. in the traffic section of “Pioneer Days” (143), cecil tells a story of a boy left behind, abandoned by his family, left with nothing but a snake. im also fairly certain this is about him (cecil loves to tell his own story without ever really telling it). 

most revealing is what cecil says in “Ghost Stories” about his mother and her death. we learn their mother left when cecil was 14 (whatever that means), that cecil “thought that Mom would be back at any moment, like maybe she was away on business. Or out for a walk. Or just hiding.” He says, “And Mom flew away, when all other defenses failed her.” we learn she returned many years later, sick and old and “sorry”. we learn that she died soon after in a way that was “mundane”, that cecil was at work when it happened. we learn that cecil mourned her passing.

all of this paints a picture of a relationship that was strained, full of pain, downright abusive. and we see cecil, as he does so often, retrofit this pain to be something more palatable. she was hiding because she was proud. she didn’t speak to him because she was focused on something else. her defenses had failed her. she was struggling with alcoholism and mental illness. she was playing a game. she covered the mirrors because of pride. she came back! her death was inevitable. he misses her. he grieves her. he loved her. she might have loved him. he makes excuses for her because to do anything else would be to admit that he had experienced immense pain- to re-experience this immense pain. better to change the story.

now abby. 

we don’t know nearly as much about abby as i wish we did. we know she “approach[es] life with a total practicality,” that she will save her pain for when she is in private (It Devours!). steve says, “With Abby around, I can't imagine a bad thing that could happen" (89). we know her relationship with cecil has been tumultuous, that she leaned on cecil and then on steve as she raised janice. in “Bedtime Story”, the sister in the story fought with her brother, telling him she hated him. “she would wrestle him to the ground and pull his hair.” after the boy is buried in the ground, the sister often visits the tree he becomes. she plants flowers, removes beatles from his bark, reads in his shade, plucks his fruit. she visits with a man and a child, visits with joy and with tears in turn. this sister, this abby mourns her brother and tries to protect him, fights with him, loves him. 

and, again, in “Ghost Stories”, we learn that abby was “reserved and controlling”, that she dropped out of college when their mom left to raise cecil, that she blamed him (that cecil blamed her for not being their mom). we learn that abby was there when their mother died, that her death prompted cecil and abby to reconcile their differences. we learn that cecil and abby are both haunted by their family. 

here’s where i diverge from what we really have. 

we haven’t really heard from abby. everything we know of her we’ve learned from cecil and steve. but i have to imagine she resented their mother, that she hardly wanted to drop her plans for her future to raise her younger brother.  i hardly have to imagine what it’s like to have that kind of responsibility thrust upon you when all you wanted was to live your own life. i have to imagine watching your mother die, your mother who just reentered your life after years of neglect, would hurt, would be complicated, would cut deep.

i imagine mr. and mrs. palmer bringing home their first born child, naming her “Abby”, naming her “father’s joy”, naming her after the pride that swelled in her father’s chest. i imagine mr. and mrs. palmer doing their best to raise their daughter in a town as hostile as night vale. i imagine them wanting a sibling for their daughter, someone to keep her company when they couldn’t. i imagine abby struggling with the idea for a moment, then embracing her brother wholeheartedly. i imagine mrs. palmer naming their son “Cecil”, naming him “blind”, naming him after the future she saw.

i imagine abby, her father’s joy, watching as he brought his son to “work in the pasture” with him (132). watching as her brother was injured by his curiosity, watching as her father avoided him in his anger. watching her mother hide from her brother. i imagine abby realizing she would have to be the one to patch him up, even while both parents were still home. i imagine abby hearing her father promise that he “would give [his] life for [his son]”, hearing him say her brother could never be a doctor because “he feared for the boy's future patients”. i imagine her wanting her father to offer his life for her, to invite her to the pasture. i imagine her becoming more reserved over time, realizing her brother needed more help and attention, willing to step into the background because she loved him, because she wanted to be strong for her family. i imagine her doing everything she could to live up to her name, to be someone worthy of the joy of her father.

i imagine abby, her father’s joy, watching him leave. maybe she knew why, maybe she was simply left. i imagine abby watching her mother slowly fall into paranoia and fear because of her brother, because of what she had seen. i imagine abby following her mother into the woods, placing flowers on the trunk of a tree she recognizes, trying to keep cecil distracted by playing a game with him. i imagine abby making sure cecil got to school, got food when their mother was hiding from him. i imagine abby finding out her mother too had left, left her with now full time responsibility for cecil. i imagine abby becoming controlling because she had to, because she had lost control over so many other aspects of her life. i imagine abby channeling what she could remember of her father, trying to be strong, reliable- ignoring that he had stopped being that very suddenly. i imagine abby yelling at a teenage cecil, telling herself that it was better than ignoring him like they had. i imagine abby finding out she was to become a mother, a mother without a father, a mother to a daughter who had more needs than she could handle on her own. i imagine abby finding a man who wanted to help, who could provide a stability cecil was unable to, for all his enthusiasm. i imagine abby, kicking her drunk brother she had raised out of her wedding, not willing to look him in the face for years without seeing her father, seeing her mother, seeing ghosts.

and i imagine abby listening to her brother describe their father on live radio. i imagine her cleaning up after the dinner steve made, hearing about a man with a “thin mouth… [and] threatening, beckoning eyes” (192). hearing about a man, their father, her father, going into the forest with a shovel, digging himself out of the ground. i wonder if she put the pieces together retroactively or if she’d had them all along. i imagine her waiting for the shower to cry. i imagine her hearing that cecil received a photograph of their father (201, 219). i wonder if she went to see it, if she was able to, if she even wanted to see it. i wonder if she listened in, checking that her brother was taking care of her daughter, only to hear that her father, the man who’s joy she had once been, was actually talking to cecil (224). i wonder if she wondered why he was reaching out to cecil and not her. i wonder if she called cecil after, or if she knew he meant it when he said, “I refuse to look into it further.” i wonder if she hopes that when cecil is made to remember their father, she gets to as well. i wonder how long she was her father’s joy, and how long she spent grieving whatever changed that.

most of all, i wonder if WE’RE EVER GONNA GET TO HEAR ABBY’S FUCKING VOICE!!

I can't help myself im gonna explain my thought process for the sns orpheus/eurydice piece under the cut cuz I'm still not over it

OK so first the composition. When looking at references on pinterest of Orpheus n eurydice i found that in most paintings eurydice was static and was either getting pulled along by Orpheus or just standing in the background and I know I wanted for this piece for them to be both in action.

I had a really specific composition in mind so I used this random character poser online to get the perspective exactly how I wanted it to be (bc let's be honest if I tried to do that all by myself I would Explode)

i knew i wanted to depict the exact moment that naruto looks back at sasuke, his widened eyes and sasuke's outstretched hand + him yelling out. now idk WHY he's exactly yelling out to naruto uhh you can make your own reason for that lmao

Next: the sketch and the clothing/designs. For naruto I decided to draw an off the shoulder chitoniskos aka an exomis bc soldiers used it and i thought it was fitting. the only reason he doesn't have another layer overtop the chitoniskos is bc i am Bad at Clothing and idk how to do it. its also why the skirt's flaps resemble more roman skirts than clothing folds rippp that wasnt my intention goddammit 😭

anyways i draw the symbol he has on his stomach on the belt and the uzumaki symbols on the flaps of the skirt. u can also see i gave him a laurel wrath in the sketch but it isn't in the final drawing. that's bc i realized that uh, it kinda made no sense in the context of the drawing so i just removed it lmaoo.

for sasuke i decided to draw just a regular chitoniskos and to draw the chlamys. for sas i drew the sharingan on the clasp and on the belt is the uchiha symbol. on the chlamys are some moon symbols and fire like red threads. (btw shout out to @achilleslyre for the help on the greek clothing 🫶🫶)

also u can see me struggling w the lyre and the lamp here. drawing objects in perspective is so hard my god

the lineart! this part is where i finalized the clothing folds and tried not to go into perfectionist mode.

base colors

shading, making sure i know where the light source is coming from + adding the afromentioned details. also added some sun motifs to naruto's lyre

even more rendering and shading, added some blue/purple-ish light on naruto since he's closer to the lamp and to the outside

and the finished piece! i struggled w the cave as well bc it kept looking off but at this point i was 8 hrs into this drawing and my hands were NOT listening so i just decided to wing it and scribble aimlessly until a general cave like shape could be seen.

the branch outside is going from a green to a brown-reddish color, representing spring turning into autumn and persephone having to return to the underworld aka it parallels eurydice/sasuke also having to go back to the underworld. (this is mostly me talking out of my ass lmao)

i could be wrong w the way im interpreting this but I feel like fifty shades anakin is rlly stuck in the worst loop ever. when obi is around he behaves bc hes receiving validation and feels loved, but the literal second hes not he reverts back to complete self-destruct/act out for attention mode bc hes both terrified of abandonment but also believes he deserves to be abandoned. he always says he doesnt know what he was thinking when hes done sum bad but I rlly just feel like he has many issues

I wouldn't say you're "wrong" necessarily since i'm putting it out there for people to interpret however they want, no matter what my intentions are.

And yeah, he definitely does have a lot of issues. We saw in the previous chapter how he went from feeling completely loved and accepted by Obi-Wan to freaking out because he was afraid that he was into something that Obi-Wan didn't like.

I also feel like Anakin fully commits to any decision he makes: good or bad. Like once that decision is made, he's going to do it. For example, hiding the speeding ticket lol. He made that decision and he stuck to it.

And part of the reason it probably feels like he does things when Obi-Wan isn't there is because of my lack of ability to think of things for Anakin to get in trouble for lmao. Okay, the weed pen thing did actually come from personal experience (that was a... night...). But I don't want it to always be his "attitude" (though I enjoy that a lot too), ya know?

Maybe this is my cry for help hahaha. If anyone has any idea of what Anakin can get in trouble for in Fifty Shades, let me know. I'm all ears, babes.

Ultimately, this fic is a fantasy. I started it because I really wanted to spank Anakin more (he's like the perfect spankee. I can't help it!!) and I wanted to explore kinks! Adding in all of my favorite things like angst and hurt/comfort and feels and fluff are sprinkled over the top for added flavor (and they come with the territory with relationships). The personality of your characters is just *chefs kiss* I wish i could explain it; how they actually act lifelike and not some YA protaganist (not a bad thing, but w/ stories like that it makes it soooooooooo much better), how they are so distinct, and how their flaws and strengths work together.

And Zombie-Nymphs Antanov art!!! I can't get over her art in general, but drawing a gas mask well!?!? Especially the hose and how it moves; the depth and perspective is *mwah*. The little details on the hat, mouth piece and tube end. The way the simplicity of the eyes and mask compliment each other. And of course the colors and shading! They work so well together and the mask looks like I could just.. Grab it or touch it; and it would feel right, if that makes sense?

HEYOOOO i'm back for a bit

im prob not going to be active this summer because i have a lot going on, but ill check in when i can!

i hope youre doing okay w the heat wave. i am absolutely dying rn, it was A HUNDRED DEGREES ASDFGHJKL. my fan has been on nonstop. the only reason im able to get through this is because i went camping during a heat wave once (like 90s all weekend) and our campsite didnt even have shade. so now all other heat waves pale in comparison to that time lol, im just grateful i get to stay inside w my fans. but it sucks not having an ac, we really need to get one soon.

have you watched any new anime? i finally finished kuroko no basuke (its so good omg) and the promised neverland (it was good, but a lot of plot holes, imma read the manga to get the full story). now im watching banana fish (a lot of people are dying, im scared to get attached).

i went on a camping trip last weekend and they were playing volleyball, i apparently dont suck as much i thought i did. but i also learned that learning about sports from animes does not translate into being good at the sport lol. ik all about volleyball and basketball now and really want to play it but i have no skillz rip.
