I watched Gentlemen Prefer Blondes out of an excess of boredom and unwillingness to do any of the things I actually have to do today, and (a) it really is staggering how attractive Marilyn Monroe is, even when next to Jane Russell; (b) Jane Russell is tall. Not excessively (wikipedia says she was 5'7" and intensely Christian, also surprising) but she's taller than most of her castmates and it shows; and also (c) I found out that it was based on Anita Loos' novel by the same name, which was a thinly-veiled send up of the Roaring 20s, with her writing her contemporaries into the stories. This does make me feel slightly robbed, because I think this film would be even more interesting if it was set in the 20s, America hovering on the cusp of financial ruin and partying with increasing, feverish hope of no tomorrow; Lorelei being aggressively cavalier about everything except having money, and dragging her more sensible, if sarcastic, co-conspirator around Europe with her.

#also both actresses are bad dancers. I don't know if they had a choreographer or what #but when they dance it looks awkward and feigned even when they're clearly moving in choreographed ways #also russell gets the funny zingers but monroe /is/ funnier #with a little more acting and polish it would be a great role honestly.#also did you know that edith wharton loved loos' book? wild. I mean not totally unexpected since american/european clashes #are sort of her thing but still; it's very old guard appreciating the new guard #anyway. now I probably have to go....do things....#a proscenium for our dreams

i don't mean to be totally salty 😂 i like the CONCEPT of felicia's dress in theory (though like i said, i find mj's to be a bit boring, especially compared to some of her past Looks; it's not ugly but the way it's drawn is a bit bland, though i imagine IRL if it was like huge coin-like gold sequins etc it would probably look amazing) but i'm not a big fan of how Fel's dress looks in execution (which may just be an art style problem) and her hair looks awful no matter which way you slice it.

the idea of a cat-ear neckline is so fun, but, idk i am simply not vibing with it 😔

Violet is good at running. She always had been.

It hadn't been hard, at first. She'd always had Garrett with her.

It hadn't been that hard after he'd died, either.

Scott McCall had found her half-dead and taken her pain until she hadn't been anymore, despite the hard voice of the man with him telling him not to. She hadn't thought much of it at the time, but she'd realized later that McCall had probably been expecting to give her a painless death.

Instead, he'd taken enough pain that her body could start working again. The nagual had gotten her claws deep enough into Violet that her body had started working differently.

Garrett, she'd guessed, hadn't gotten so lucky.

When Violet had closed her eyes and not died, but woken back up in what she would learn later was the McCall house, everything had been so much louder than it'd used to be, and she'd heard their hushed voices debating what they should do with her, now that it's just her left. They'd been stupid enough to put her in a room with a window and say, where she could hear, that she had nothing left to lose.

She hadn't stuck around long enough to find out what they would decide.

She hadn't settled down until she'd gotten herself halfway across the country. Chicago had seemed far enough. Empty enough, too—not enough forest to hold a nemeton and a big enough population that whatever other supernatural stragglers found their way here anyway couldn't be significant.

Together, she and Garrett had made more than enough money to keep them both comfortable, and it's only her, now. So she settles into an apartment and forges the paperwork necessary to skip ahead to her senior year so she can finish high school, start college, and keep her head down.

It takes just over a year, one week into college, for her to open her apartment door to find that she's been found.

It's insulting, actually, giving the disarray of the boys—because that's what they are, young enough to be in high school—in her living room. One holds the other in a headlock while the other desperately swats at his leg.

She takes advantage of the chaos to get a good look at them. They don't seem armed, but she's sure they must be. If they're smart enough to find her, they're smart enough to know what they'll find.

She hasn't had her garrotte in a long time, given it's a known weapon of the Orphans. She always carries a knife—a mainstay from Garrett—but she thinks they might be too quick to react if they know how prepared she is, so she leaves it strapped to her thigh.

Instead, she quietly closes the front door behind her, flicks just the bottom lock back on since they'd broken the chain to get in, and grabs the vase off of the catch-all table next to the entrance. She takes a second to be annoyed about it—she likes this vase—then smashes it against the wall.

Their attention jumps to her, and all at once they're both standing, scrambling for their weapons. With much more grace, she bends to grab a shard for each of her hands, and they've just about managed to arm themselves by the time she's stood back up.

"What the hell," she asks mildly, "did I just walk into?"

"A diversion," she hears a woman's voice say, then she feels something sting her neck. She looks, sluggishly now, to find the source of a voice.

The woman is smirking. She doesn't take her eyes off of Violet as she praises the boys, "Good work, Gabe. Nolan. I heard she's a runner."

Violet is good at running. If they hit her with something she'll wake back up from, they'll learn just how good she is at fighting, too.

Random tip for writers

Keep a running list of every name you like. Literally every time you hear or come up with a name you like, write it down. You can like color code it by gender if you want, I like to keep it neutral.

After a while you have dozens to choose from and every time you’re writing something you can just scroll through and see what fits. You don’t have to go through the horrifying ordeal of actually coming up with a name for every character on the spot.

#I just counted and my list has 52 names in it #it’s also really interesting to see the patterns #cause like most of the names I like are very old fashioned #and they utilize a lot of vowels #so like anais and viola and maevis and monroe are all in there #I also like biblical and mythological references or just references to classic lit #10/10 would recommend you keep a little name note #creative writing

Final boss Monroe I feel like would differ depending on the circumstances around the fight. If it’s supposed to be more light and fun, kinda like a dual with a mentor (but not in a sad way), she’s got a lot of fabrics and jewelery. Very flow-y and worldly traveler-y (different pieces and homages to different cultures). If it’s more of a tragic hero cut down/ enslaved/ brainwashed/ whatevered in her prime it’s the same but more torn, tarnished, dirty, and faded. If it’s a villain look I feel like there’s two flavors, one where you play into her anger at her circumstances (in which case it’s similar to the aforementioned one but with a hard edge of pirate) or go for more of her imposter syndrome kinda collapses in on her and her look gets drained of her personality (in which case it’s leeched of most of its color, doesn’t have any flow-y items or jewelery, and her hair would be cut extremely short)

Freya would wear a nice dress that’s has a lower neckline on a date. It’s likely a nice rich purple. She’ll take a nice shawl (likely with a floral design) in case it gets cold. Simple jewelery and makeup.
