idk how many of u were around for it so one of my favorite vocaP interactions has to be this one.
iyowa posted a blank tweet(which btw u need a special character input to do). hiiragi magnetite replied to it with! a blank tweet. to which iyowa replied with, yet again, a blank tweet
Tumblr media
so in response to that hiiragi magnetite quote retweeted and left that blank
Tumblr media
iyowa took it a step further by screenshotting the qrt and posting that in a blank post
Tumblr media
and then hiiragi magnetite took a screenshot of that and posted their own blank tweet
Tumblr media
so obviously the next logical step was for iyowa to print out that tweet and tape it to their wall providing very helpful alt text that's, as u may guess, blank
Tumblr media
but it doesn't end there because hiiragi magnetite takes the pic of it taped to the wall and makes towel out of it (theres 2 more pics in a reply to it proving its real)
Tumblr media
and to top it all off iyowa took the picture of the towel and made a puzzle out of it and, again, the alt text is blank
Tumblr media
and so far that is where this exchange ends

To anyone in the position to edit future non-fandom wikis, from a blind fan
I have run up against this issue on the Star Trek Fandom wiki (I know Fandom is bad, if there's an alternative wiki for the Star Trek franchise please please point me to it), but I hope anyone else who edits/will edit any wikis for (particularly live-action) fandoms will hear my plea.
On behalf of all blind fans, I implore you:
When creating/editing a character's page, provide a physical description of them.
Yes, even if there are pictures. Blind people can't see those. Alt text for those pictures would also be nice because screen-readers can read alt text, and it's not always visible to a sighted person who just wants to check a thing real quick.
Yes, even if they basically look like the actor playing them. We also cannot see what actors look like, funnily enough.
Yes, even if you think some things are obvious. You never know what someone might have missed when watching the show/movie or playing the game/watching a let's play. Especially if they're blind/low-vision viewers.
Yes, even if you personally find it annoying. Wikis are an excellent reference if done well, and can be very helpful for reminding people of stuff, and for helping blind fans like myself know what something looks like, so long as the description is there. We find it annoying when there isn't all the information on a wiki page there could be.
Sincerely, a blind Treky who has looked up the pages for several characters on the Star Trek wiki this past week to try and find out for suresies what those characters looked like, only to find there was no physical description section. The races get them, which is great and mostly helpful (but why do they talk about Cardassians having grey skin most of the time instead of scales? I got tripped up by that—though not in anything I've posted yet thankfully!). But that only gets you so far for specific characters! I can't keep relying on fanfics and the kindness of sighted friends with lives who can't always be reached when I need the information to find out for certain what colour Miles O'Brien's eyes are, or Kira Nerys's hair, and sometimes fanfics aren't accurate about descriptions, and I could be basing my entire perception of a character on something I read in a fic once! And I won't know if I can't look it up!

Bestiaryposting Results: Kengliwa
So, as it seems everyone made note of, this week's creature was exceptionally easy to guess. (To the point that a couple people did actually go ahead and name it, which I can't be that annoyed about because I don't think anyone missed this one.) I actually thought about not including it -- I cut a few that were particularly obvious like this one, but this entry was just so beautifully written that I didn't want to not post it. Maybe I should have done a separate post like with the dogs... live and learn, I suppose.
Anyway, previous entries and results can be found here: https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. And the entry everybody is working from is at the link below:
Art below the cut in rough chronological order, as per usual.
Tumblr media
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) decided to go a bit Beatrix Potter, and produced some frankly adorable shrew-like critters. (And her own alt-text, thank you.) They're dressed in these nice black coats and bowler hats so they can look like the "black column across the fields" described in the entry. I love everything about this. Also, if you want to see a version of this without the linework, check the link above.
Tumblr media
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) decided to work off of the assertion that Kengliwas prefer wheat to barley because "barley is food for beasts". Naturally this means the Kengliwa must not itself be a beast, and Silverhart reflects that by medieval definition that excludes pretty much everything but birds and fish. So here we have a very small mouse-bird (the results of this one are all very cute, I have to say). And of course it's a flightless bird, because the entry describes them as walking. I'm really struck by the general composition of this one; the tiny bird clinging to the top of a wheat stalk is so well depicted. The colors are great too.
Tumblr media
@cheapsweets (link to post here) followed the same "not a beast" logic as Silverhart, though they also name "serpent" and "worm" as potential non-beast categories. They also picked "bird", because the Kengliwa brings grain back to its nest, and birds have nests, so there you go. I appreciate that they've continued with that connection by having the interior of the Kengliwa burrow lined in a manner reminiscent of birds' nests. (And also that they provided alt-text, thank you.) Speaking of which, check it out, burrowing birds! With a cross-section of their burrow! Delightful. They further speculate that the symbolism attached to this one must be pretty weird given the mixed feelings the author seems to have, so I went and checked...
... there's actually not a lot of symbolism on this one. The highlights are that the divided grain supply represents the division between the Old and New Testaments, and barley represents heresy which is why it is scorned. (Pretty sure lots of people in the Middle Ages ate barley, but I suppose they preferred wheat.) The symbolism is all "things we learn from the good example of this industrious creature", and the entry quotes Proverbs 6:6 -- I'm not copying it here, because even though I'm pretty sure everyone knows what the animal is, the verse in question does name it, and we have a procedure here.
Anyway, as always, I recommend clicking on the link to CheapSweets's post to see their detailed explanation of their design decisions.
Tumblr media
@theforceisstronginthegirl (link to post here) has drawn some ants in their agenda book. I have to admit, I'm not fully sure whether this was meant to be an entry, but you know, there's a picture (with alt-text and everything!) and it's tagged "kengliwa", so in it goes. Honestly I think the highlight here is that they described the creatures in the picture as "scribbles with jobs" which I think is a fun way to describe bugs generally. Very dynamically drawn scribbles too; they're quite expressive.
Tumblr media
@pomrania (link to post here) has drawn a strange and adorable critter. It's giving... lizard-squirrel. Squizard. Particularly delighted by the fact that multiple people decided that such an industrious fellow should be wearing tiny clothing. I think the bag with one (1) grain of wheat in it is a nice touch. You just want to root for this little guy, you know? Also it's worth checking out Pomrania's linked post and associated progress post for some interesting steps in the design process for this one.
Tumblr media
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) continues to deliver beautifully stylized art. They note that they considered rodents, but figured medieval authors would not be nearly this positive about rodents stealing grain, so instead they're lizards. Very good lizards, too! I love the patterning on them and the expressions on their faces. The one on the left scorning the barley is particularly delightful. Coolest-capybara also wonders what the original animal is classified under, if not "beast" -- to which I must say, oddly enough, this one is in with the beasts. I think. Right after this entry is the start of the "birds" section, and right before it is are some various mammals. So either this is the end of the beast section or it's, like, a palate-cleanser in between.
Tumblr media
@strixcattus (link to post here) has also given their Kengliwa clothing, but for a very specific reason: as others have noted, the Kengliwa scorning barley because it's "food for beasts" implies that the Kengliwa are not beasts. Therefore, in Strixcattus's interpretation, they're people. Which is indeed the only non-"beast" category of animal that nobody else has mentioned, as far as I can figure. They're darling. Love the one on the right that appears to be chewing on a straw like your stereotypical farmer, except of course the straw is a single seed with like a bit of stalk attached. And I know I always say it, but you need to go read the linked post for this one. Maybe it's just because worldbuilding is my jam, but I'd happily read a lengthy TTRPG supplement about how Kengliwa society operates. They're like... medieval Borrowers who farm lichen and domesticate ants. I want to know everything about this.
Anyway, here's the Aberdeen Bestiary version:
Tumblr media
That's right, they're scribbles with jobs!
Seriously, it turns out Theforceisstronginthegirl drew basically a dead ringer for the medieval version. Compare the two; the biggest differences are the medium and the fact that the Aberdeen Bestiary includes a nest.
But yes, they're ants. We all know they're ants.
Which should, as CheapSweets alluded to, be classed in with the worms! (Remember, that's a flexible term in the medieval era... especially since this is a Latin text, so it's vermis, like Modern English vermin.) There is a section labelled De vermibus, and these guys aren't in it! It could have really used them, too; I think the Ant entry by itself is the same length as the whole "worm" section.
Anyway. Hopefully next week's will be less obvious... okay, I just checked, it's barely less obvious. But I would put money on nobody guessing the one that posts on the 19th (though that's a pretty short entry, unfortunately).

Social, Cultural, & Political Things to Help Understand Buddy Daddies - Part 2
Hey there, everyone! Since my first post covering topics like these went over so well, and since I found a few more things I can talk about in these first four episodes that involve a social, cultural, and/or political aspect of Japan, I decided to make a second post.
I type these posts up on my desktop, since that is easier, but after posting, I will go back on mobile and edit in ALT text for the photos. This post is also likely to be very lengthy and image heavy, but I hope you all enjoy the information provided. Also, if anyone has any extra insights, please feel free to share that information. I love learning, and always am learning, so any corrections or further info is always appreciated.
We are going to be starting off with a few simple, quick, and “easy” topics, so to speak. Now, let’s get started!
1. Rock - Paper - Scissors
Tumblr media
In Ep.3, we see Kazuki and Rei decide who will go and purchase the sweet potato for Miri. In order to decide this, they use Rock-Paper-Scissors. In Japan, the game is called janken and is used in classrooms to decde everything: which row or group in class will go first? Janken. There is a tie, who will win the game? Janken. A student or students are out of class today so there is some extra food left over, who will get it? Janken.
In many cases, this will be use to decide orders as well (like the winner goes first or last and then it goes in ascending or descending order from there). And it won’t just be between two people, they’ll do huge groups. When I worked as an ALT, I would often just trust my students or the JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) or Homeroom Teacher to figure out who won and lost, because I would always lose track... ^ ^;
Anyway, this way of deciding things is viewed as unbiased and a sort of “third-party” decision maker. A nice way to have a decision made without ruffling any feathers. And, we sometimes see using Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide things within the workplace and business world.
Some examples of this are provided on the website Japan Daily, which will be linked below. The website does lean a bit into Orentialism, imo, but it also has some good history and info on Rock-Paper-Scissors in Japan and these real life examples of it being used in a business/work environment are great:
Tumblr media
2. Baked Sweet Potato - Street Food
Tumblr media
Baked sweet potato is a very common street food in Japan in the fall and winter months. They are cheap, smell delicious, are delicious, and are a great way to warm up cold hands. Nowadays, many are sold out of small, white vans like the one shown in Buddy Daddies.
Tumblr media
(Image from Asahi Imports).
They are usually eaten plain and the inside tends to be a light, off-set white. Like ice cream trucks, the sweet potato vendors will usually set up shop around playgrounds, school areas, parks, etc. basically any place where a large crowd is likely, and they will usually shout out that they have sweet potatoes. In a similar way to the vendors walking around selling food, drinks, and peanuts at a baseball game or something.
You can read more about this winter time snack over at Asahi Imports, which will be linked below (they also make mention of daigaku imo, which is a dish you’ll see in Japanese school lunches in the fall and winter months, and which is very yummy!).
3. Obake - Ghosts
Tumblr media
I was watching a reaction video to episode 3 of Buddy Daddies, and the reactor was like, “Isn’t she afraid of ghosts?” And, well, that made me think of a very popular song and book in Japan called おばけなんてないさ (Obake Nante Nai sa). It is a very famous children’s song and (later) picture book in Japan. The song was first broadcast on an NHK program called “Minna no Uta” in 1966. This info is from the website Hello Project Lyrics Wiki, and will be linked in the comments below.
When I worked at a Japanese cram school back here in the States, we had a bunch of copies of the books, and all the teachers had the book and song memorized. All the parents were familiar with it too, and it was taught in the youngest class, since the book and song is for the 0 - 2 year old age range.
Here is a Youtube video with the book and the song being sung to it. Warning: This song WILL get stuck in your head. The beat is very simple and easy to remember, so you’ll definitely end up humming it, even if you don’t know the lyrics.
undefined
youtube
I’ll link to English lyrics that I found for this song in the comments. But the general gist is that there is no such things as ghosts, they aren’t real, but if they were, I (a child) would be afraid of them. So the song goes on to tell of how you can befriend a ghost instead, and not be afraid of them anymore.
Miri is 4 years old, and can write her name, speak and understand well, and has good coordination skills. So there has been some level of education, so she has likely heard this song before. And therefore probably isn’t afraid of ghosts on a more conceptual level, though she still equates them with “bad guys,” lol. If she hasn’t learned it or heard it yet, she probably will now that she is in daycare.
There are four more issues/aspects that I plan on discussing, so I’ll put those under a Read More due to length and them being slightly less lighthearted.
4. Animal Rights
Tumblr media
When I watched reaction videos to the first episode, many people were upset at the cat being returned to the box (and the cat even just being in a box to begin with). I was too, of course, but I also knew where this scene was coming from. For this section, I will be citing the article: Challenging, inadequate animal welfare in Japan, which I will link to below. Though, I also came across the article Why You Shouldn’t Buy a Pet in Japan, which I will also be linking below, since I think it is worth the read.
Tumblr media
Basically, Japan has laws in place, and they get revised every 5 or so years, however, they are very vague and the general public knowledge of animal rights is farther behind than in other industrialized nations. In the other article that I will be linking below, they mention that about 90% of pets in Japan are bought through pet stores, rather than through adoptions or rescues. So, as the other article states, abandonment of pets is rather high, especially because of how trend-based pet ownership is in Japan.
Things like pet cafes can really influence pet trends. I’ve been to two myself, an Owl Cafe in Osaka and a Hedgehog Cafe in Tokyo.
Tumblr media
That was a number of years ago now. And while those experiences were AMAZING! I do think about the ethics of it all and think, if I were to return to Japan some day for a visit, those kinds of cafes wouldn’t be on my To Do list.
However, there are groups and organizations to help fight for animal rights in Japan. Since this section of the post was inspired by the scene with the cat in the box, I’ll highlight the cat based one mentioned in the article:
Tumblr media
So that’s good to hear!
5. Parenting Style
Tumblr media
Another thing I noticed during reaction videos were the responses to scenes like the above, where Miri is kicking at the back of Rei’s car seat and whining, “I wanna go swing!” As well as to scenes like below, where Miri caused all of Kazuki’s food supplies and materials to spill all over the ground.
Tumblr media
All of them have made mentioned that moments like those require strict discipline. But, Japanese parenting style differs a bit when it comes to things like this. In an article entitled: Japanese Parenting Style - And Differences From the West, which will be linked to below, we get this bit on discipline:
Tumblr media
Basically, it is saying that Japan isn’t really big on punishment because Japanese children learn to behave by learning the importance of cooperation and harmony through other social groups like school and sports. This is definitely true. What I’ve seen is that the expectation is that the children still don’t fully understand the ins-and-outs of society yet.
I worked at a Japanese daycare, so our job was to take a gentle parenting approach, to help explain to the child why what they did was hurtful or harmful or dangerous. And one of our goals was to help the children learn how to play amicably with each other.
That’s not to say that I haven’t seen children be yelled at or anything like that. I have. But it is usually the teachers that take on that mantel, especially at the junior high school level. That’s when you get stuff like students have to practice bowing during an assembly over and over and over again until they get it just right, especially if that assembly is a rehearsal for an important event, like graduation ceremonies.
Bringing this back to Miri though. Now that she is in daycare, she will start to receive this gentle parenting approach to learning how to co-exist with others, which will eventually result in more positive behaviors (or, that is the ultimate goal, anyway). Miss Anna will likely provide a lot of that guidance as the head daycare teacher.
6. Snack Bars
Tumblr media
Miri’s mother works at a Snack Bar and, over on the official website, it states that her job is as both the Mama and singer at the Snack Bar and that she is 34 years old. But what is a Snack Bar and what is a Mama?
Tumblr media
Snack Bars were started in 1964 to work around government laws that prevented adult entertainment establishments from staying open after midnight, by offering light snacks, that changed the category that they fell under, thus they could stay open. The Mama of the Snack Bar is basically the one in charge of the Snack Bar.
They are similar in ways to Hostess Bars, but on the cheaper side. You can read about more of the details about how they run and what not at the website Metropolis Japan, which I will link to in the comments.
Another thing about Snack Bars is that, while they don’t sell sex, they sell the fantasy and illusion of sex:
Tumblr media
They are also a outdated nowadays (with their peak being back in the 80s), so there is a general seedy vibe about them. It may seem like an okay place to take kids from the name alone, but they are very much so adult-only spaces. Also, as we saw with Miri’s mother, likely a place and setting where the exploitation of women happens.
7. Casinos and Gambling in Japan
Tumblr media
We saw Kazuki do some gambling in Ep. 1. Something you may have noticed, however, was who lured him in:
Tumblr media
And what the outside of the establishment looked like:
Tumblr media
Two young and sexy women and a bright, sparkling pink building named “FAIRY LIPS.” You probably guessed that this isn’t a legal gambling establishment. Casinos and gambling are still largely illegal in Japan, with some exceptions like lottery. The ones that are illegal are likely being run by Yakuza.
However, some changes have gone into affect in more recent years, especially as a way to attract tourists.
Tumblr media
Over on the Wikipedia page about Gambling in Japan (which will be linked below in the comments), it talks about how Japanese lawmakers approved a bill in July 2018 that officially allows casinos in the country. However, they come with a lot of restrictions, such as Japanese locals only being able to visit them three times per week or ten times a month, and Japanese visitors will be charged 6,000 yen entrance fees to discourage addiction.
And...that’s it for this post! Thank you all for reading this far and for all the love and support you’ve all shown to my previous post (and other meta posts I’ve made). I really and truly appreciate it! I’ll be keeping an eye out for topics like these in future episodes. Though, those posts should be a lot shorter, since I’ll be going on an episode-by-episode basis, instead of in bulk like this.
Until next time!

"Nearby, a collection of the island’s residents, both mundane and supernatural, gathered at the teahouse for lunch under the guise of discussing the floral arrangements for the upcoming May Ball. But the true purpose of their early luncheon was to catch a glimpse of the new Guard Captain, rumored to have pointy ears, sharp fangs, and a fearsome set of claws that could tear a man apart.
For a populace well acquainted with vampires, this was less a point of concern, and secondary to the reports that he was tall, ruggedly handsome—and as far as the frantically churning rumor-mills of the island could yet determine, romantically unattached."

if you are using tumblr in 2024 you have the ability on browsers and the app to add alt text to images. very long alt text, in fact. long alt text which is readable to screenreaders in its entirety because it is not the 00s anymore and alt text character limits are no longer limited to like, 100 characters. you can put that long description for the art you drew in the alt text. you can briefly transcribe a screenshot of tags in the alt text. you can provide short alt text for inline images. you can provide very long and descriptive alt text for detailed stand alone pictures or art. the point is: provide alt text. please. and stop hiding alt text in captions behind a read mores, too.

Image ID
Thank you all for your time voting in the poll, we appreciate your input!
As the overwhelming majority voted for us to encourage everyone to add image ID to their submissions, and we’d like to be as accessible as we can, we’d encourage all of you to include image ID (and alt text) on your submissions if you are able.
To make this easier for you all, we’ve written up a little guide with some questions to walk you through it! We’ve referenced a lot from brownandtrans’ tumblr post and this article, and you can visit both for more detailed info.
1. What is image ID, and how is it different from alt text?
Firstly, alt text is a quick description of an image that tells you the essential details of an image, usually including written text. This could be as simple as: “A coca cola can on a plain background.” Alt text is usually 125 characters or less.
An image description, or image ID, is a more detailed description of an image that provides a bit more context and description, usually with colours and character poses listed. This could change the above example to: “A red coca cola can covered in condensation on a white background.“
Image ID is also usually longer than 125 characters, but often around 280–350 characters.
2. Why should we have image ID?
Image ID is very important for accessibility and inclusivity, and helping people who are vision impaired fully participate more than they would be able to otherwise. It’s especially useful for people with low vision who use screen readers, as well as for people who have very slow internet so they can know what a picture is if it doesn’t load.
3. How do I use image ID?
You can use image ID to describe your submission, and usually it is listed beneath the photo in the caption like the example below:
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of the anime with Natsume from the shoulders up looking over his shoulder and smiling. He’s standing in front of a dappled forest background.]
Since we know the characters, and this is Natsume week, you can easily use names without too much further detail—but if your submission has Natsume with white hair from the manga, you could always include that too!
We recommend keeping an image ID to the recommended lengths above of around 280-350 characters, and you can easily check this by typing or pasting your image ID into a word processor such as GoogleDocs or Office.
You can also add /end ID or /end image ID at the end of your ID, but that’s up to you!
Further questions and an FAQ is listed behind the read more. Please send us an ask if you have any questions at all you’d like us to answer!
FAQ
1. Do I have to use image ID?
Image ID is something we encourage, but will not enforce.
2. Will you share my entry to the Natsume week blog if I don’t have image ID?
We sure will! The only posts we won’t share are those that break our rules, or in very extenuating circumstances. If you don’t have image ID, that's is fine. However, we encourage you to include it if you can.
3. If I write fic or create something that isn’t art, do I need to use image ID?
If you have created something that is mainly text, or readable with a screen reader, you do not have to worry about using an image ID! For example, if you post a fic to AO3 and share it to tumblr, or if you write a poem or share a playlist and a track list.
If you make a cover for your fic or a playlist, we’d recommend including a quick image ID. If you share a photo of a craft you’ve made, we’d appreciate an ID being included then too.
If you write a song or create a video game, or a video that’s too long for image ID, you wouldn’t include one in this case.
4. Can the admins write my image ID on my post for me?
Unfortunately, no. We are all working or studying full time, and don’t have time to be able to assist with writing image ID when we have potentially hundreds of entries that may require this.
We recommend having a read of our helpful resources linked above to try yourself, or not including image ID if this is easier for you.
Again, if you have any further questions, please send us an ask.

Hi! Do you have ressources or ideas about describing images in another language? Notably: being bilingual, I might post in either of the two languages I speak. How can I write alt text in a way that won't be confusing to my readers whose screen readers are in either language? (I'm assuming screen readers can't switch from one language to the other just by guessing.) [1/2]
And in the case that my image contains text in one language, but my post is in the other. Is it okay to translate the text in my alt? And if I don't have the time or spoons to do so, is it better to write the text in the language that it is on the picture, or to just write "text in [language]"? [2/2]
What a great question! Generally speaking, screen readers can't switch between languages on their own; that's why you need language properties. While a page has an overall main language property, you can set certain parts of the text to different languages with the right coding! I've never tried that with alt text though, so I'm unsure if that works.
In any case, unfortunately, I don't think you can do any of that on individual posts or images on Tumblr (I've tried adding the HTML coding to a text post and got no results on my screen reader, though it's been a little while since I've tested).
Now, some screen readers, such as VoiceOver, are able to switch between languages that have different alphabets even if the change happens mid-sentence. So if you wrote the alt text in Japanese, mine would read it just fine even though it's set to English. But if you aren't lucky enough to be using a language with that unique of a writing system, each person's screen reader is probably going to read the text and alt text as best it can using its default language rules, whatever those are set to for that user.
I'd say your best bet would be to provide both, though that might be easier to do via image description that alt text.
Do my followers have any other suggestions?

I got your big book of bats recently and noticed it didn't have the bat ive had framed on my wall for the past 16 or 17 years
Tumblr media
So here's my framed rodrigues flying fox photo :)
mod note: I never noticed it doesn't have any pictures of this species in particular before XD (they are mentioned twice, once on page 303 and again on page 307, but you have to look them up using their scientific name to find that information)
image description (copied from alt text provided by submitter): a framed photo of a rodrigues flying fox on a wood wall. The bat is dark brown with a fluffy head and barely visible small ears and is shown roosting. the photo is flipped upside down so that the bat looks right side up.

Bestiaryposting Results: Almlaeni
Here are the results for this week's bestiaryposting; as always, anyone who doesn't know what that's about can see all previous posts here: https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting.
This one, I think, really illustrated to me how differently one perceives these entries when one knows what animal is being described. There was a particular detail in this week's entry that I thought was an absolute dead giveaway as to the identity of the animal, but most of the commentary I've seen from the artists indicates that they didn't see it as obvious, which was a relief -- I think the harder it is to guess, the more fun this whole thing is. (Yes, you're not supposed to try and guess it at all, but on the more obvious ones like the Gligglae I see a lot of comments along the lines of "I'm pretty sure I know what this is", so there are indicators whether people know.) It probably helps that it was a longer entry, so there's a lot going on. I just think it's worth noting because of the conversation recently going around regarding what's obvious to the author vs. what's obvious to the reader.
The entry we're working from can be found here:
Art is below the cut in roughly chronological order.
Tumblr media
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) started with the thought that an example of an animal with strong jaws is an ant. But given the description of manes and fur, this is probably a mammal, so we get an "ant-lion" that they describe as looking "like he should be an alien pet in a sci-fi movie or game", which I think is spot-on. Good design for a weird alien pet. I really like the execution of the "ant's head but mammalian" concept, and the coloring of the mane looks really cool. Some more detail on design decisions can be found in the linked post.
Tumblr media
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) does note that she thinks she knows what this animal is -- but, in the spirit of the thing, intentionally avoided drawing that -- so we'll have to see how identifiable it is at the end of this post. She's also provided her own alt text, thanks for that. I find this design really charming -- the blend of porcine and feline makes for a good silhouette in my opinion, the pose looks cool, and the rainbow mane is quite pretty. I particularly like that the tuft of hair the entry says is a love charm is drawn to resemble a heart.
Tumblr media
@cheapsweets (link to post here) has drawn a rather frightening-looking beast, here shown nipping its own paw after accidentally stepping on a twig. (They also provided alt text, thank you.) There's a lot of interesting design choices here -- explained in some detail in the linked post, check that out. We can see a stocky, muscular head and chest, showing that this animal has the strength in its jaws and chest mentioned by the entry, paired with kangaroo-like legs and tail to give it the leaping capabilities mentioned. Also, this picture shows an Ethiopian Almlaeni in summer, which is why it is bald except for a bit of fur on its mane and tail. The shining eyes, I think, are what really gives this animal an unsettling appearance.
Cheapsweets also would like to note that they're "on the lookout for some good resources for animal anatomy and musculature", so if anyone has any suggestions, please send those their way!
Tumblr media
@pomrania (link to post here) has given us this creature that is very much A Mammal but it's hard to pin down anything more specific than that -- it makes me think of the sort of old engravings that archaeologists just kind of give up on categorizing as specific animals and end up just calling them something like "the [culture/location] Beast". It's kind of feline, kind of equine, and it has what Pomrania (accurately) characterizes as a greyhound-like build. This impression is aided by the pose and the line work -- I don't know, there's just something about it that makes me think "this should be on the wall of an old tomb somewhere." I like the vibe, is what I'm saying. Very good beast.
Tumblr media
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has selected a couple of the elements in the description that stand out and taken them to their most dramatic interpretation. The Almlaeni can jump in such a way that it seems to fly, and it can live on the wind -- what if it has bat-like wings it can glide on? (Someone else noted "live on the wind" as possibly suggesting flight depending on how you interpret the ambiguity of the phrase, but discarded the idea; here we're running with it.) The result is quite a fearsome beast; that face is downright scary. We can also see here sensory organs adapted to hunting at night, and strength concentrated in the front of its body (which probably helps with those wings). And of course the stylization is excellent as always -- the linework is very convincingly medieval and I swear I've seen illuminations with that exact style of starry background. The linked post describes the design decisions in a bit more detail. (Also thank you for providing your own alt text.)
Tumblr media
@strixcattus (link to post here) put this up after I drafted the rest of this post, and from the text of their post I think they guessed the nature of the animal, so take all references to it being more difficult to identify than I thought with a grain of salt. They also describe it as "a little freak (affectionate)" which is definitely an accurate description of the creature they've drawn. I really like the combination of different types of animal you can see here. The pose comes from a pretty reasonable interpretation of a couple points in the original entry: they can leap really well, but most of their strength is in the front half of their body. Therefore, obviously, they must use their front legs to jump and to propel themselves for rapid motion. Excellent direction to take that, I think. As usual, I strongly recommend clicking that above link and seeing the details Strixcattus writes up for their beasts.
And now, the Aberdeen Bestiary version.
Tumblr media
As you can probably gather from this image, this week's animal is the wolf. And I think it's an interesting peek into the medieval imagination to see how fierce that wolf looks. The shaggy fur, the fangs, the eyes -- it's striking. That looks like a fairy-tale illustrator decided to draw the Big Bad Wolf in such a way as to frighten children. All the best wishes to our heroic little dog up there.
I also like the interestingly-symbolic depiction of the sheepfold: it kind of looks like our sleeping shepherd keeps his flock in a TARDIS. And, of course, look at that lovely Stylized Tree in the background.
So yeah, it was the bit about them sneaking up on sheepfolds that I thought made it Too Obvious that the Almlaeni was a wolf. Glad that didn't turn out to be as much of a tip-off as I thought.
As for the Ethiopian wolves mentioned: damned if I know what they were thinking of. Jackals and African wild dogs can be pretty colorful, so there might be something there, but I wouldn't describe them as having manes. My best guess is that the original animal being described was a black-backed jackal, but it's hard to be sure what, if anything, the grain of truth is here. (There is an animal we call the "Ethiopian wolf", but it looks more like a coyote than anything, so I'm not seeing the "colorful mane" thing.)
The thing about this is that medieval authors were very much ignorant of that part of the world. "Ethiopia" to them was much like "India" -- to the modern ear, those are countries we're aware of with a defined location, and we can go read about them if we want. To medieval Europeans, both were just kind of vague geographical blobs: they knew these places existed because they heard about them from classical sources and/or from trading partners, but there was virtually no direct contact or reliable information. These were distant and mysterious lands to them, and as a result they were willing to believe just about anything regarding what those places were like. (Also, if you see "Ethiopia" in a medieval text, don't necessarily think the region we now call by that name -- it tends to just be an umbrella term for "sub-Saharan Africa".) So, leaping maned wolves? May or may not be based on anything real, and if it was, it's been Telephoned to death by this point.

I don't know how feasible this would be because I don't know how Frank's AI works, but I would like to suggest that the alt text on the images she generates should be written by a human. I know she's meant to be fully automated but the AI-generated alt text doesn't really tell you anything about the picture, thus defeating the point of alt text.
(1)
The reason I added alt text to Frank's images was to provide visibility into what Frank is "trying" to draw.
It's meant to provide an interesting lens into how the bot works, not to tell people what is in the image. It doesn't "defeat the point of alt text," because it has a point, just not the one you're imagining.
(I should probably document that more visibly)
(2)
The options here are "no alt text" or "AI generated alt text."
This is not because of of "how Frank's AI works," it's because people's time is valuable.
Frank posts continually 24/7, often hundreds of times a day. Not all of those posts contain images, but any post she makes at any time could contain an image in principle.
I don't have time or bandwidth to caption all these images in real time, or even near-real-time, and I'm not going to pay someone to do it. Even if I got a volunteer, I doubt I'd feel comfortable giving them admin access to Frank's blog, which I would need to do.
It's possible that the existing type of alt text is legitimately confusing to people who depend on alt text to browse the web. I haven't heard anyone report that experience, but if I did, I'd be open to removing the alt text entirely.
