openoffice is a free word processor!
Thank you anon! This is very helpful. 🙏
Their website is openoffice.org
So now I know of two two options for free open source programs, this and LibreOffice. It looks like both branched off from the same open source roots about a decade ago, according to wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org. And both include the same suite of programs as MS Office, including a word processor (Writer) and a spreadsheet program (Calc), which are the ones I’m most interested in.
Here’s an article I found comparing the two: itsfoss.com/libreoffice-vs-openoffice/ (It’s just what showed up at the top of my search, so I make no claims about its accuracy.)

10 Best FREE Adobe Software Alternatives (2023)

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems the only thing Adobe offers aside from what's in a lot of -ahem- FREE software, is allegedly a processing system for the advanced features of it's exclusive format, a few tricks that actually use your graphics card to calculate some color variance on larger images, NFT support, and a mandated update cycle that could "accidentally" stop supporting a part of your hardware leaving you without your software until you buy some new hardware (the Windows method).
Just from my minimal scroungings, Krita works for drawings (and partly animations), Gimp works (for general images and photos, GIFs too allegedly), for the vector graphics crowd there's Inkscape. All three are free and work on a laptop as far back as 2009. No yearly subscription, no need for latest greatest hardware, and it's the opensource community so if your tablet misbehaves there is a community to help you get it behaving. (If all else fails, bribe your tablet with something sweet.)

Alternatives to google docs
For various reasons, this is now a hot topic. I'm putting my favorites here, please add more in your reblogs. I'm not pointing to Microsoft Word because I hate it.
Local on your computer:
1.
Tumblr media
LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/), Win, Linux, Mac.
Looks like early 2000 Word, works great, imports all formats. Saves in OpenDocumentFormat. Combine with something like Dropbox for Cloud Backup.
2.
Tumblr media
FocusWriter (https://gottcode.org/focuswriter/) Win, Linux.
Super customizable to make it look pretty, all toolbars hide to be as non-distracting as possible. Can make typewriter sounds as you type, and you can set daily wordcount goals. Saves in OpenDocumentFormat. Combine with something like Dropbox for Cloud Backup.
3.
Scrivener (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview) Win, Mac, iOS
The lovechild of so many writers. Too many things to fiddle with for me, but I'm sure someone else can sing its praises. You can put the database folder into a Dropbox folder for cloud saving (but make sure to always close the program before shutting down).
Web-based:
4.
Tumblr media
Reedsy bookeditor (https://reedsy.com/write-a-book) Browser based, works on Firefox on Android. Be aware that they also have a TOS that forbids pornography on publicly shared documents.
My current writing program. Just enough features to be helpful, not so many that I start fiddling. Writing is chapter based, exports to docx, epub, pdf. You can share chapters (for beta reading) with other people registered at Reedsy.
5.
Novelpad (https://novelpad.co/) Browser based.
Looks very promising, there's a youtuber with really informative videos about it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHN8TnwjG1g). I wanted to love it, but the editor didn't work on Firefox on my phone. It might now, but I'm reluctant to switch again.
------
So, this is my list. Please add more suggestions in reblogs.

What pdf reader do you use?
I just use adobe acrobat, or let whichever browser i'm using open the pdf. Or on my ipad I think there's a native pdf reader/maker? I don't do anything active about it, to be honest, just follow the path of least resistance.
Do you have any suggestions for a better one?
In the past I have used GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program, found at www.gimp.org) as a free alternative to Photoshop, but I haven't needed it in several years so I don't know what it's like these days.

To all my comic fans, enjoyers, appreciators if you will:
Who are some comic artists that you really like? As in, their visual style. And why?
I’m mostly looking for Marvel/DC, focusing on line art/proportions. I wanna study some people and try out things they do, so if anyone has someone in mind you really like, bring em on :D

tweet about how chrome is a performance hog that's killing adblockers and harvests all of your data and how its high marketshare (which is the result of anti-competitive/monopolistic practices, especially with android) allows google to uncritically invent and decide new web standards on its own because Everything Is Chrome including implementing fun new ways for ads to track you even if you disable cookies/etc: 154 rts, 704 likes
tweet that says "i hate google but you'd have to put a gun to my head before i ever switched to FIREFOX": 40,582 rts, 84,293 likes
