Ongoing Series - Thai

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 2 of 8 (10?) - Everyone seems to be a bit of a player and I’m not mad about it. It’s nice to see high-grade flirting, and I really love how very gay the leads feel. Not BL gay. Actual gay. We shall see how it goes, I suspect we are in "messy gay" territory in which case, I predict utter carnage and that this show will drop ranks precipitously for me. But right now? Of all the Thai BLs airing, I'm enjoying this the most. How bizarre.

I like the side couple (thrupple?) too, despite the prat fall kiss and possible cheating. They very pretty:

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 4 of 8 - oh dear NO honeychild, face masks are gross tasting!

Rule no 966 of the BL world. He’s never asleep.

Argh Achi wants Ji so bad. Nice mutual kiss tho, despite Ji's baggage. I guess Ji knew what would happen if Achi stayed? But why is he so scared? Just deeply closeted? The backstory is very high school achy and I feel like it explained Achi but not Ji. And the crying in the movie was lovely, so we totally understand Achi's but Ji is just messed up and confused? I admit to being a bit confused too. Why is Ji the one so angry?

On a totally different aside, I really like how the set dressing is done in Ji’s apartment. It looks lived in and not staged. Super rare in Thai BL. I'm reminded of Ai & Pond's dorm room in Love By Chance, which actually looked like a real college dorm.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 7 of 12 - Why is it always the pulps that actually trot out the best communication, conversation, consent, and healthy relationships? Yes I'm still wincing over the truly bad acting but I’m enjoying their good relationship. The sex scene was sweet and tender, although the likelihood of rose petals getting stuck places wigs me out. (Flower petals + lube = terrible combination. Just FYI.)

ALL PRAISE VERSE REP! And a bottom who owns it! Yay!

1000 Years Old ep 5 of 12 - How ridiculously colorful and flirty they all are. There is nothing at all vampire about this show. I’m a bit bored by the restaurant plot but I'm tuning in for the bonkers approach to goth. How dare they be so cheerful with my precious emo youth, but also, how very Thai pulp of them.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube) ep 4 of 11 - oh it’s SO GOOD. Reading the yaoi and crying. COME ON TAIWAN HAVE MERCY. The red wrapping of the hands (red thread, yes yes we get it). The boy who doesn’t want to box for so many reasons. Not the least of which is how unpleasant it is to spar with a lover.

This is easily the best BL currently airing and it is going to hurt us. But I don't care. I love it.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) eps 8 of 10 - This show is dangerously cute and I’m scared for everyone involved, including me.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Gaga) ep 2 of 6 - Poor baby thrown in all willynilly amongst a pack of queeny bitchy gay intellectuals. I'd be lost too. It's the worse kind of fight, one you have to philosophize your way out of.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 10fin - They are extremely adorable and it was a very good ending - mature, adult, and bittersweet. I liked it a lot. But I didn’t love it the way I wanted to.

The promise of this show, younger cook courts older divorced office worker, should have been my catnip. I mean if someone pitched this to me in an elevator I would have downloaded it by the second storey. Unfortunately, it did not exactly fulfill that promise, not in the way I'd hoped. Did I still enjoy the ride, yes, but I feel just a little let down. 8/10

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) eps 5 of 8 - Honestly now I’m just shipping the two girls getting together. Frankly, I really don't like this show, and normally I'd DNF but there's only a few eps left and nothing else is airing rn.

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Thai ViuTV grey) 10 eps - I'm exhausted by this franchise and the variety pack style of BL. If there is a particularly good couple (or installment) I might watch it, but I'm letting others decide for me.

A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school, not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing for some reason.

Gossip

The choreo controversy - Deep Night vs OnlyOneOf. Look, like a musical rift, or a styling photoshoot, there are no new ideas in choreo, I feel like Madonna did this pose too, a long time ago. Certainly someone in the 80s. Or whatever. Anygay, it's an ironic thing to see a Thai BL being called out by a gay-branded Kpop group when both are exploiting eroticized homosexuality for commercial profit... just saying. (HOW DID WE GET HERE?) Not to mention that BOTH are ALSO exploiting the kink community. We live in interesting times, BLabies. In the end, it's a good publicity stunt all round. And I think Nine knows exactly what he's doing (and why he is doing it). Finally: Drama drama drama around coreo? That is V gay boys. Fun fun fun, carry on everyone.

3/21 Two Worlds (Thai IQIYI) 10 eps - One of those "he's dead Jim so time travel" thingames staring MaxNat. I'm over this concept but Asia flipping loves it and I do enjoy MaxNat. Phupha (Gun) and Khram (Nat) love each other but Phupha is murdered. Then Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, 12 years ago, Khram and Tai (Max) were in love. However, Khram was killed by Tai’s dad. Now Tai finds alter-Khram apparently alive. But then there is ALSO an alter-Phupha to deal with. (Phupha is played by Gun Thanawat who was Khom, the repressed butler bodyguard from Unforgotten Night. We like this, we scared of the love triangle aspect.)

Forgive me a moment of industry noodling?

Have ya noticed that it's slender pickings right now but it shouldn't be? This is not the mid summer slump nor end of year lull. We should be getting some heavy hitters on first quarter release. (Side eyes GMMTV. Perhaps those painful Japanese acquisitions were a bigger issue than any of us realized?)

Anygay, IMHO, Thailand's BL bubble has popped and sponsor money is drying up. This is my shocked face:

Look, the 2021-2023 level of release and growth (exponential) was never gonna be sustainable, so I'm not surprised. I suspect that in 2024 Thailand will actually produce fewer BLs than 2023 (73, 64 in 2022, and 40 in 2021).

I know I'm sticking my neck out predicting any film industry but... I have seen this kinda thing before and it just *feels* like shrinkage. Thai BL's load has been shot, my peeps. (Not to be crass or anything.)

Oh, don't worry you pretty head about it, it's not going away, just getting less prolific.

One day, admiral of the New Republic fleet, commodore of the Chiss Ascendancy fleet, and diplomat of the “no-longer-Empire” came into the bar… and began to think about how to get from the "books" to the "screen".

And make it clear to one Сhiss that they will not tolerate an armada of zombie stormtroopers and witches “on their shift.” Even if he is their friend.

I'm still trying to comprehend how much I ultimately disliked the Ahsoka series… The first season feels unfinished at all.

Thinking about Last Twilight again and the connection between Day and action.

Here is a man who is a professional athlete, whose entire life was dedicated to movement. He would have had to exercise every day, cardio, weights, resistance training, the lot. On top of that, he would also have been training his specific badminton skills for several hours a day. His meals would have planned for maximum energy and vitality. It's almost impossible to overestimate just how much Day's every waking (and also non-waking, healthy sleep schedules are essential for good energy after all) moment was dedicated to high-level activity.

And then The Incident happens.

In an instant, his vision becomes so massively impaired that he is now almost functionally blind. Not only does that rob him of a huge amount of independence, it also steals his movement. Not because he can't move but because the people around him (and perhaps even a little bit himself) become worried about him moving. Action becomes something to be feared.

I think it's not for nothing that when we as an audience and Mork first see Day post-incident, his is sat in a wheelchair and because of that we know he is unable to walk.

(Now, that's not to say wheelchairs suggest a curtailment of freedom because, for their users, wheelchairs are freedom. Without them, they truly would be stuck. However, they do signal to the audience that the user's walking ability is impaired somehow. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that @my-rose-tinted-glasses already pointed out that Day-in-the-wheelchair is likely an homage to the French film The Intouchables. I also like to think that there's perhaps there's a small nod here to Day's determination to be independent. He can't walk but he can still move and, damn it, he's still gonna go to those interviews.)

So, Day, at the moment he meets Mork, is at his least mobile. His career in movement has been shattered and now he can't even feed himself without injury. It is this that has likely forced him to accept that he could do with some day-to-day assistance.

Throughout the episode we then see the little ways that Day tries to take back his mobility but is stopped by his family and his own disability, culminating in the climatic road scene where he is saved by Mork.

But we also see little moments where he succeeds in his independence. He makes it from the car to the lift, he identifies the button he needs to press, he finds the library and is able to locate someone to guide him to the CDs (of audiobooks/music?). All the while, Mork is watching him, assessing him, seeing what he can do and what he can't, not running in before he has a chance to try. And that then ends with Mork calling Day up, asking him to cross the room on his own to get his library card.

So we start with a stationary Day, who is still determined to have independence but is hindered by his situation, and we end with a Day taking the first steps on the journey of seizing back his freedom to act.

#It's also interesting that we start with Day sitting with his family. Although he is slightly apart from them #he is still on their side #so to speak. "Kissing is for lovers" he says as they both discuss their past (but not their future, not yet their future, only what has been and not what will be yet.)

My heart broke the entire time for Sakae as he tried to navigate both his exboyfriend and his new love interest without ever losing his own compassion or the way he genuinely cares for people. He's been so hurt but he still couldn't leave anyone on the street or hopeless despite his own wishes and his own new love.

He's never dishonest but he is also always kind as well. It would be so easy to be unkind or to be hard and cruel but he never lets himself do that.

He tries so, so hard to be clear without being cruel. Because Mizuki just refuses to accept his answer because he wants what they had back no matter what Sakae says because he knows how kind Sakae is.

It's so hard to see someone you loved who left you, to see them back in the place they used to belong but no longer do, no longer have that place but they still fit there just a little wrong and that is Sakae's struggle here. Mizuki fits but now he fits wrong and he doesn't know what to do with his compassion and what their love used to be and Mizuki never acknowledging what he did.

Mizuki tried to step back into his life like he never left while Sakae has been struggling to move on for the whole time. The place Mizuki used to fill has changed shape but Mizuki doesn't want to see that.

To Mizuki, this is all just games before they get together. This is nothing but games until they return to the love story he paused because he's ready to try it again. But to Sakae this is his future and his life and everything to him.

Mizuki was hurt and confused when Sakae didn't return to their old dynamic and didn't take him up on the game he invited him to play. He still doesn't understand that Sakae is truly trying to move on and doesn't want this any more. Because Mizuki might have broken them up but he did with the expectation that Sakae would be waiting for him, like a man in romantic stasis, waiting for his return, a safety blanket that would be there to protect him if he needed something.

Anyway, they are amazing and the show genuinely showing them as ex-boyfriends and letting this be the story is fantastic and I love them very much and I really do hope Mizuki realizes what he did and can fully face the mistakes he made and leave Sakae to his next love.

I feel like one thing we can take away from this kickstarter is that Cassandra Clare will never be done with the Shadowhunters universe. like literally all these new short stories come from the fact she took a six month "break" from writing shadowhunters lmao

not to draw conclusions that will probably immediately be disproven when I read nona, but I'm thinking a lot about the dynamic of the old lyctors compared to the people at canaan house

imo, this series seems to discuss the way that official and oppressive systems get turned human over time- how a harmful, twisted hierarchy (that of the necromancer and cavalier, for example) inevitably strays from the horrible trap it was designed to be (epitomized by mercy and augustine, who are still trapped within it). over time, people explore that framework, interpret it in their own ways, subvert it, turn it inside out. you get twisted versions of it, like silas and colum, but you also get new and wonderful versions of it, like abigail and magnus or cam and pal.

they didn't know what lyctorhood was designed to be! they didn't know how sinister "one flesh, one end" actually is. all they know is that they love each other, and that love kind of redefines what a necro-cav relationship COULD be, and what it is in so many instances. and the proof of that is that of ALL the houses that showed up at canaan house, none of them but ianthe would have gone through with lyctorhood.

did that mean the cavaliers were objectively worse at being cavaliers? maybe! but I think the series is arguing that love is what redefines those horrible traditions, and in light of those new definitions, the old traditions become flimsy by comparison. mercy and augustine are trapped. that's what being a lyctor means to them and it always will. but the story isn't written in stone yet for harrow and gideon, or for cam and pal! it's a tradition that has done violence to them, and they'll carry that forever. but beside that old and twisted tradition, someone like cam kind of stands out as an even more perfect cavalier than one who would see their entire purpose as sacrifice.

#also yes this is an allegory for gender #sorry if this doesn't make sense #i definitely explained it better in my freakin ESSAY #but so much about the old lyctors feels like a foil to the new ones/new characters #like their story is so sad and so final #and its mirrored SO much in people like harrow and gideon #but their story isnt set in stone yet! they still have time #anyways watch me read nona and revoke all of this #although if this series doesn't have at least a little hope in its ending. im gonna snap #tlt #the locked tomb #harrow the ninth spoilers #tlt analysis

a small gripe i have with the pjo show is the lack of foreshadowing we have had for the actual traitor because in the books, part of the point is learning how foreshadowing works as a device in books, since it is a middle school novel.

so taking away those somewhat obvious hints for . . . shock value is actually pretty annoying. while a huge part of the audience is adults, this is first and foremost a kids show and part of kids media is having stories that are often having very classic examples of well worn tropes.

also i guess they COULD change the villian but that would literally destroy about 75% of the story and i wish we got more about this character, clueing us in a little bit more. cause right now, they really are making me think its grover even tho its NOT, i literally would cry if they made that change.

anyways we will see how this goes, i also plan on rereading the series soon cause im curious about the details i dont remember

hazel & thanatos : nico & cupid scene comparison

both of these scenes are about identity and truth at odds with innate self-preservation. both gods reference each other and acknowledge their similarities. cupid references hazel, and thanatos even references nico (didn't include that scene but hazel asks thanatos if he knows where nico is). jason and frank both also face obstacles through these gods, but the true tests are for nico and hazel. the point of both scenes is to demand that both characters face their greatest fears, and force hazel and nico to be honest about why they have come so far on their respective journeys, and admit what is is that they truly want. also, thanatos is fairly passive and hazel experiences more visceral attraction to him than she does to her series love interests, whereas nico's confession is very blunt and unromantic, and cupid is very violent, causing physical and emotional agony and further blurring the domains of the two gods.

#other difference between this scenes is that a reader could be gay and/or in unrequited love but can not have been dead before #thanatos was also very much a test for frank too but it doesn't foil cupid at all whereas hazel's interaction with him does #also i'm not surprised hazel and thanatos never became a ship because this fandom pays hazel dust and also you don't really #learn anything new about hazel in this scene (although it is one of her most insane moments)#but i'm actually very surprised nico and cupid never got shipped. like this is one of the most talked-about scenes from this series #he shot nico with an arrow. he's the god of love. he has an infamous mythological romance. you'd think somebody would've hopped on that #just statistically speaking with the amount of nico fic out there #hazel levesque #nico di angelo #cupid pjo #thanatos pjo

Just finished my first playthrough of BG3. Romanced Lae'zel, but ending up turning into an Illithid because the idea of making Orpheus or Karlach do it didn't sit well with me (or my character).

I told Lae'zel to leave with Orpheus in the end (I heard she wouldn't stay with a ghaik anyway, which she's valid for, but also, it doesn't feel right to ask her to stay when I know how much her people mean to her). And like-

I am enjoying red hood: the hill, but it's kind of driving me crazy how after they did all that shit in Gotham War, they immediately tried to sweep it under the rug with joker: the man who stopped laughing (even tho the issue wasn't really resolved over there), and now giving Jason a series set in the past so it doesn't have to deal with the fallout...DC please...

#ramblings of a lunatic #dc comics #I heard someone say that the next installment of dc vs vampires is seemingly the last thing Matthew Rosenberg has lined up at DC #which is a shame bc after reading his red hood: gotham war tie-in issues i think he has a pretty decent handling on Jason #the complicated and oft times contradictory line he walks between what violence is necessary and what isn't #but his sympathetic elements and charm are still on display #sigh. i need to read task force z don't i #one day I'll read under the red hood in full to get a taste of full on villain!jason #if i stick w/ GA past the phsycial volume i own I'm bound to come across him again and see if ppl are being normal abt the mia thing #idk I think jason as a character has somewhat suffered due to the fact that his character development was very much connected-#-w the n52 reboot #which worked at the time but now that a lot of that continuity is being brought back #it's making ppl realise that we didn't get a true ''jason putting aside differences to try and work w/ the batfamily'' arc or moment #although I do remember him being anti-heroic in the final crisis tie-in?? with kyle and donna right????#i honestly think jason just needs a bit of tlc and introspection and this new storybeat provides a cool outlet for that #(someone talk to me about my red hood idea/pitch pretty pleasseee)#and definitely some cleaning up of his continuity (maybe after some more universe altering events. sigh)#but instead of hopping right on that when they have the opportunity we're getting an (admittedly fun) flashback series #in which jason is more of a co-star than headliner #bwahhh
