@red-wardens Story-bugs keep biting. They are tiny bites, so not much comes out of it - but it’s...something? (Even if only just a teeny weeny bit of something?)

The Deep Roads dark and stifling about them, they keep trudging forward. The heat and the rotten stench grow thicker with each step and nobody talks much. "Why so gloomy, Tabris?" Nora peeps. It sounds small and timid, fractured by the echoes of their weary footsteps. The elf humourlessly retorts: "Just trying to blend in with our surroundings." She scoffs: "Finally found surroundings that match your gloom, eh?"

"What do they mean?" Alyss asks, while cleaning a small tear wound above Lenn's eyebrow. With his eyes obediently closed, he has to guess at her meaning: "The tattoos?" "Yes," she says, suddenly awkward. "If you do not want to talk about them, that's fine." They've always intrigued her – the way they draw shadows in and trap them in the obsidian depths of Lenn's eyes. They intrigue her all the more now that she's visited the alienage – and the only tattooed faces she's seen there were on the decidedly shady types. Lennan Tabris is anything but that. He hesitates for a while, then says: "The night guardian. A—figure from elven folklore." "Good or bad...?" "Neither," he says, opening one eye just a crack and smiling up at her. "Or both. Depends on how you look at it."

She finishes dressing the wound and proceeds to give her attention to a bruise on his shoulder. "Maybe one day you could tell me more about them. Or other—figures from elven folklore," she says, offering a smile. He smiles back. "One day I might..." "Not a whole lot of people in the alienage have them," she peeps. "The tattoos, I mean." "It makes humans wary. Draws the wrong kind of attention. You want to look like a good, proper lad when running about town. Good, proper lads and lasses don't get their faces inked." "But you're very proper, Lennan," she remarks. The chuckle he gives in response is almost cheerful. "You do remember the mess you found me in, don't you?"

The Reigning Sound — Abdication…For Your Love (Merge)

Abdication… For Your Love by Reigning Sound

For all its rock and soul bravado, the Reigning Sound always had a bruised, hurting tenderness, a fondness for losers and abandoned lovers, a recognition of the futility of nearly everything and an acknowledgement of the way that music can almost, but never quite, make things better. Recorded almost by accident and during a near-band-ending hiatus, Abdication…For Your Love brings this melancholic undercurrent right to the top. Seldom has Greg Cartwright sounded so wrecked and reckless, not often has organist Dave Amels channeled such longing and heartache through the keys.

Abdication comes from a precarious period in the Reigning Sound discography, in 2011 after the band from Love and Curses had broken up and Cartwright had begun to focus on his Parting Gifts project with the Ettes’ Coco Hames. The band might have been finished for good, except that the Toyota division Scion had gotten itself, inexplicably, into the music promotion business, and it had money to burn. The car company offered Cartwright the wherewithal to record an album. The main problem – no band. Out of the regular Reigning Sound line-up, only keyboard player Dave Amels was available. Yet as the Black Keys Dan Auerbach (who had guested on the Parting Gifts album) stepped up to offer studio time, a work-around emerged. Brooklyn’s Jay Vons, a Brooklyn soul band that had opened for the Reigning Sound, flew in for recording sessions. Five songs were laid down in two days and, along with three unused tracks from the Love and Curses sessions, they made up Abdication. The music was released as a promotional giveaway, again, weirdly, by Toyota, and who knows how many cars it sold?

Scion itself is now defunct — apparently Memphis garage soul was never the killer sales hook people took it for—and the music has been out of circulation for years. This reissue brings it into wide release for the first time, adding only a 2011 single “What Did I Tell You?” as bonus material. It is well worth digging out again, the music raggedly beautiful, broken down, full of regrets and recriminations and blazing with guitar.

Cartright is in fine, raging early rock hero mode in cuts like “Lyin’ Girl” and “Watching My Baby,” but the disc’s finest moments are lyrical. You can almost smell the whiskey and cigarette haze wreathing “Eve,” a song weighted with longing, but buoyed by a radiant melody, really one of Cartwright’s best, and crystal clear guitar-work. “Everything I Do Is Wrong,” knocks a little harder in the drums and bass, but lives in the same world of beautiful disillusion. “If you want…her…come get…her,” breathes Cartwright into the mic, and it is brave and gorgeous as hurt can be.

The band is fine on all tracks, tight and capable and expressive, but the keyboards are especially wonderful, whether blaring in vibrato’d agony in “Shaw” or doodling joyously as a roller rink organ in “Lyin’ Girl.” Amels may have been the only member of the Reigning Sound who would still show up in 2011, but damn, he was a good one.

The Reigning Sound kept going after Abdication, putting out Shattered in 2014, so if nothing else, this oddly funded, tossed together LP pulled one of America’s best bands back off the ledge. But it’s not nothing else, Abdication is one of Cartwright’s rawest and most heartfelt collections. It’s well worth hearing, especially now that you don’t have to buy a car to get it.

PICK UP LINE TIME: Nora Brosca and Kieran Tabris throw a very nervous looking Alyss Amell in front of Dalion Andras. They are waving flags with 'Alyss x Dal' on them and Kieran has a foam finger. Alyss, blushing: "I...Um, pardon my French, b-but I..I c'est la vie (sounds like c'love) you..." . Kieran and Nora cheer loudly.

Dal just blinks, staring at her in surprise as his cheeks steadily become more and more flushed. He was not used to the pick up lines being returned at all. Eventually, he just lets loose a chuckle, tugging nervously at his collar. “Hah, cute, princess...I have to say, I rather think I love you too.”

But she’s so badass…” An affectionate, dreamy grin spreads across his face. “Hot.”When Alyss asks: “She’s warmth.I dunno how to put it in words.She’s…”He sighs as he looks wistfully at the flame of Blue’s candle - steady and bright. For now…“Like the shimmer of hot air around her hands when she warms up my cold tea. Even though I’ve told her so many times she shouldn’t. Like her smile when I tell her again that she shouldn’t have…”He looks down at his hands, at the discoloured skin around his knuckles, at his bruised fingertips, most of them missing nails (his nails always come off these days whenever he lets the Taint take over; they are taking their sweet time to grow back this time ‘round). He balls his hands into fists and tucks them under his arms and out of sight.“Like the companionable silences with her, y’know… Slow, steady warmth. The kind of warmth that heals.”

Bonus: “He’s such an adorable dumbass, Nora, what’s there not to love? I mean, even you gotta admit he’s a pretty bastard.” They watch Kieran Tabris let his hair loose and then put it up in a tighter, more secure topknot as he gets ready for his sword practice. After a brief pause, Das adds: “And I may have a bit of a hair fetish.”

vampire au!

My OC’s: Vampire AU

Alyss Amell is a late 1700′s French vampire, and just, the sweetest little blood sucker; very polite, never kills her victims. Bitten at age 21 by nomad vampire Duncan to save her from dying of consumption. Pining for years over the pretty red-headed priestess with the beautiful voice who she can’t speak to because she’s always in the church at night and Alyss can’t step on hollowed ground. Leliana catches on eventually and is very endeared to the hopeless undead girl. 

Claira Hawke is Alyss’ human cousin visiting from England but ends up staying when Alyss turns. Always frantically trying to convince the town that her “sickly” cousin is very frail and that’s why she can’t leave the house and also she has tons of allergies like garlic and...crosses (”It’s the metal you see, Mayor Meredith, it just makes her skin hive up, you know, allergies.”). A terrible liar but Leliana helps her keep Alyss a secret.

Ronan Aeducan’s family is the head of a powerful modern-day (but a millennia old) coven but he fakes his own death so he doesn’t have to inherit leadership. Ends up opening a vampire-themed bar to go undercover, the goths of the town love it. He also over-pays a mortal bartender, Nora Brosca to keep his secret and be his daytime task-runner (he refuses to turn her into a vampire despite her repeated requests though). Ronan drinks animal blood since he was a vegetarian before he was a vampire and he sees this as the closest vampiric equivalent. 

Kyung-Jae “Kieran” Tabris is in the same timeline as Ronan and new to being a vampire. Got into a bad fight and could not afford medical care (cough cough guess which “first world” country he lives in) but was saved by century-old Blue Surana who had been walking home that night from the research lab she works nightshifts at. Now he’s greatly frustrated because he thinks being a vampire is so cool but none of his human college classmates believe him (”Look how pale and pretty I am now!” [”you were always pale and pretty..”] “Well look how strong I am!” [”idk you spend a lot of time at the gym dude”] “Ugh, come on! I can’t eat garlic!” [”Yeah well you’re also lactose intolerant :/”] Is invited to work at Ronan Aeducan’s vampire bar once Ronan notices that Kieran is, in fact, an actual vampire.

Blue Surana is the unofficial, unintentional coven leader of the small group of vampires that she’s either met (like Ronan Aeducan and centuries old now-phlebotomist Alyss Amell and her now-vampire wife Leliana) or turned (like Isseya Mahariel). Among others in her found-family is human vampire-hunter Cassian Cousland who she has befriended (or rather, saved, because he’d been nearly killed by a hostile vampire named Rendon Howe) whose family has protected humans from vampires for generations. He’s the first ever Cousland to befriend vampires and keep them a secret from humans and other hunters. This arrangement comes with the understanding and agreement that Blue Surana and her coven vow to not kill any human (human Nora Brosca is not thrilled about the lack of murder: “Oh come ON! Where’s the excitement in being friends with the undead if there isn’t even a littttle murder? As a treat?” [”Nora, no.”])

Worldstate 1: Blue Surana

Loghain 5. Did Loghain survive the Landsmeet? If he did, why did your Warden choose to let him live? 

Loghain lives. Blue didn’t take the betrayal personally and, though she had been sad about Duncan, she agreed with Riordan that Loghain would be more useful as a Warden than a corpse. Blue is good at remaining neutral about things like a true Grey Warden should be and understood that the order often recruited criminals and the like. It seemed like the logical path. Her only hard feelings about the ordeal was losing Alistair as a friend as they had previously been close. 

Morrigan 5. Was Morrigan’s ritual completed? What persuaded your Warden to go through with it or what caused them to refuse it?

Dark Ritual was completed by Loghain. Blue trusted Morrigan and wanted to prevent the potential deaths of Riordan, Loghain, and herself, if possible. She asked Loghain to perform the ritual and though he was hesitant at first, he ultimately agreed to her strange request since she had spared his life.

Worldstate 2: Isseya Mahariel

Loghain 5. Did Loghain survive the Landsmeet? If he did, why did your Warden choose to let him live? 

Loghain is executed. And Isseya was pissed about it. Alistair, who she already didn’t particularly like, threw a tantrum about making Loghain a warden and put her on the spot. And while she had been tempted for a moment to choose Loghain, she reluctantly decided that she’d prefer to have a blade who’d already proven its loyalty behind her (Alistair had saved her in battle more than once by then) than a blade that had previously betrayed her. She felt Loghain’s execution was a waste of a good soldier though.

Morrigan 5. Was Morrigan’s ritual completed? What persuaded your Warden to go through with it or what caused them to refuse it?

Dark Ritual was completed by Alistair. If there was any option that would raise her chances of not dying by even a little, Isseya was down to try. Plus, she was angry at Alistair already and didn’t feel particularly bad about coercing him into doing it.

Worldstate 3: Alyss Amell

Loghain 5. Did Loghain survive the Landsmeet? If he did, why did your Warden choose to let him live?

Loghain is executed. She didn’t want it to go down that way. Alyss was a bleeding heart and Anora’s pleading for her father’s life would have easily swayed her- if the choice had really been hers. She had been too cowardly to duel Loghain herself and Alistair took justice into his own hands after defeating him as her champion. Alyss cried a little bit on Anora’s behalf afterwards, since the former queen was too strong to shed a tear in front of the Landsmeet.

Dark Ritual was not completed. With a history of being coerced into certain activities herself by Circle templars, she did not feel comfortable asking her friend Alistair to perform an act she was sure he’d be very much against. Also, by this time, Alyss’ depression had worsened so much that she no longer had a will to live at all. Taking the final blow against the Archdemon was inevitable by then. A tragic end, but one she chose for herself.
