Watching the whole Gundam series in 2023 #7: Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team Review

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team was directed by Takeyuki Kanda from episodes 1-6 and Umanosuke Iida from episodes 7-12. It was released as a 12-episode OVA from January 25, 1996 – July 25, 1999. Set in the Universal Century year 0079, the plot follows the titular 08th MS Team of the Earth Federation Forces, led by Shirou Amada, as they fight in the jungles of Southeast Asia against Principality of Zeon forces.

I had heard a lot of praise for The 08th MS Team, particularly how it deviated from a traditional Gundam story by not featuring Newtypes as a key element of the plot. I was also interested by the fact that it took place in Southeast Asia, where I'm from.

I enjoyed the grounded take on the Gundam series, focusing on a small team in one of the many battlefields of the OYW. Shirou is a good leader and a good guy all around, and his love story with Aina Sahalin was cute. I thought the way his mindset evolved throughout the series from wanting to help win the war to pursuing peace and an end to the fighting was quite poignant, and the warmongering of his superiors was quite relevant to modern times.

Other than Shirou and Aina, the rest of the cast were not very notable. Kiki Rosita, and the rest of Shirou's comrades in the 08th MS Team were good supporting characters, but I wasn't particularly invested in their stories or their lives.

Overall this series is a 7.5/10.
