Amanita Muscaria, As a Witch’s Spiritual Ally
Tumblr media
There are some in the witchcraft and pagan communities who have advocated the use of amanita muscaria (fly agaric) for the purposes of spiritual or ritual use, especially those involving astral travel. Others decry it as nothing more than a dangerous poison. The truth is somewhere in-between, as with most things. It is somewhat popular among those who follow what is sometimes called “the poison path”—along with other traditional baneful plants and herbs such as belladonna, datura and henbane.
Tumblr media
My first experience with fly agaric caught me entirely off guard. I had ordered them from a vendor who had picked them from the Transcarpathian Forest in Ukraine, which I thought was just so poetic somehow. I have never been one for babying myself when it comes to entheogens intended for ritual/spiritual use, so I began with about a 15g serving, which is a moderate dose. I’d highly recommend starting at 3-5g, however. I don’t regret the experience I had, although I do somewhat wish I’d eased into it more slowly. Most people, and certainly people who are not very familiar with dissociative hallucinogens, would’ve found the experience far too much to handle. Having some experience with astral travel, dream-walking, etc., I was not quite as mortified as some might have been when—after several minutes of being trapped in a repetitive loop involving some divine voice reminding me over and over again that I was the last person they would ever speak to at the end of the universe—my physical body shattered into pieces like a broken eggshell and my disembodied spirit fell into the watery blackness of the Void.
Tumblr media
Soon, as I floated through black aethyr, I became convinced that I had died. I could ever-so-vaguely remember I had taken the amanita muscaria (I remembered this more as a complex Cosmic Event than a mundane occurrence with any specific details, but I knew it was connected to why I was here at this point), and I became convinced that they had killed me and my previous human life had ended.
Tumblr media
I saw many Cosmic Events, in fact I saw the universe as one big Cosmic Event divided into infinitely smaller Cosmic Events, each of them reflections of the original, endlessly repeating all the way from the meta-cosmic level down to the most microcosmic. Eventually everything was just worms and other wriggling parasitic organisms, fornicating and feasting amidst their own dirty sex and foul defecation, writhing together on some eternal dead body—perhaps my own, perhaps the universe’s, but presumably the difference was a moot point.
Tumblr media
As I relived a thousand traumas, as I regretted a thousand mistakes, and as my heart ached for a thousand people I had known in life and knew I would never see again, everything around me became a convalescing amalgamation of limbs and faces of every imaginable type and species, endlessly rotating—images juxtaposed upon images, for all eternity—it seemed I was looking at literally everything in the universe all at once. This felt like seconds, but also like eons. There was no difference between the two here. But there was also—the only saving grace in all this hellish sadness and agony—the sensation that when I had worked through all this “karmic debt,” for lack of a better term, there would be no more sadness or pain and I would find peace.
Soon, as the universe came to its end and everything started loosening, disintegrating and breaking apart into infinitely smaller pieces until there was nothing left but primordial ooze, even the spirit that I was began to disintegrate to nothingness. And the rest was black, and I essentially remember nothing more until I awoke about ten or eleven hours later. I’m sure there was much more, probably beyond description. And even what I have described, I have done the best I can, but words simply cannot do it justice.
Tumblr media
My significant other had discovered me during the experience, and described to me later what he had seen. When he came in, he found me lightly banging my head against a wall, spouting numbers. Soon, I relocated to another room and began burying myself in a massive pile of clothes and random items. After that, I said nothing and would not respond to any efforts to communicate. Looking back, I assume because my mind and soul were both convinced that I was dead, my body—which was still moving about and doing things in a totally dissociated “autopilot” state—had decided it was appropriate to bury myself. I assume I thought I was burying myself in the dirt, and in my deliriant state, clothes and other assorted trinkets suited my purposes just as well.
I do think that this experience gave me a new appreciation for life, having essentially experienced what it might feel like to die, become disembodied, and eventually let loose into an acceptance of my own death. If I were to describe this experience to anyone in just a few short words, I would say that it was like “tripping on death.” As far as spiritual experiences go, I watched the end of the universe with my own eyes, and I, as a spirit, dissolved as time itself was devoured and everything returned to the nothingness from whence it came.
Tumblr media
This is an ally that needs to be treated with the utmost care and respect, and there is a reason why many witches’ flying ointments, with or without amanita muscaria, contain tempering ingredients such as opium in order to soften the traumatically intense effects it can cause. I would recommend starting with a smaller amount. Take caution with this one, but it can be an incredible and life-changing experience in its own right.

I've been driving by this monster on the highway for a week and had to stop. A portion of the biggest one is pictured on the ground . This bad boy had to have been 12 inches .
