“A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” (2013) Review
Tumblr media
“A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” (2013) Review
Five-and-a-half years following the successful release of the fourth movie in the DIE HARD movie franchise – 2007’s “LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD”, 20th Century Fox Studios release a fifth movie about the adventures of New York Police detective John McClane called “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD”.
A high-ranking, yet corrupt official in Moscow, Russia named Viktor Chagarin plans on incriminating political prisoner/government whistleblower and former billionaire Yuri Komarov without a fair trial when Komarov refuses to hand over a secret file believed to have convicting evidence against Chagarin. A young man assassinates a colleague of Chagarin’s and agrees to testify against Komarov for a shorter sentence. He turns out to be John “Jack” McClane Jr., Detective McClane’s estranged only son. The NYPD police officer, who has not been in touch with his son for years, learns of Jack’s situation and travels to Russia to help.
But when John arrives and approaches the courthouse that holds Jack and Komarov on trial, an explosion orchestrated by Chagarin and his henchmen disrupts the courthouse, and Jack breaks free with Komarov. After spotting Jack, John confronts him, but their dispute is cut short when Chagarin’s henchmen, led by main enforcer Alik, chase them throughout the streets of Moscow. John learns that Jack is a CIA agent and has been on a three-year mission to rescue Komarov from Chagarin’s clutches and retrieve a file that can link Chagarin and Komarov to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The file will enable the U.S. government to bring down Chagarin, who has proven to be an obstacle to U.S.-Russian relations. But the McClane men not only learn to heal long-standing family rifts, but also discover there is more to this mission than evidence against Chagarin.
“A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” received negative reviews from movie critics. In fact, their response to the movie strongly reminded me of the negative press that the James Bond movie, “QUANTUM OF SOLACE” had received in 2008. In a way, I could see why. Both movies share two negative traits that prevented them from becoming even better films. “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD”, like the Bond film, suffered from what I liked to call the “Paul Greengrass film editing style”. I realize that this editing style has been popular with recent filmmakers who use it to trim a movie’s running time. But I can do without it. I disliked it in the second, third and fifth JASON BOURNE movies. I disliked it in “QUANTUM OF SOLACE”.  And I also disliked it in “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD”. Director John Moore and editor Dan Zimmerman used it with strong effect during the Moscow car chase, making the latter one of the most confusing car chases since the one featured in 2007’s “THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM”.
Moore and Zimmerman’s use of this fast speed editing style also enabled them to give “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” the shortest running time in the franchise’s fifteen-year history . . . one of 97 minutes. The idea of a DIE HARD movie running slightly over 90 minutes makes me shake my head in disbelief. Also, the plot for this latest film, penned by Skip Woods, is too complicated and quite frankly, too good to be wasted on 90-something minutes running time.  If “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” had possessed a longer running time, Woods story could have been told with greater detail. For instance, the movie could have revealed how John learned of Jack’s arrest with greater detail. And the situation regarding Chagarin, Komarov and Jack could have been told with greater detail with a longer running time. Also, Cole Hauser could have enjoyed more screen time as Jack’s CIA partner, Mike Collins. Instead, Hauser was barely on screen for five minutes tops.
Before one begins to think I share the critics’ dislike of “A GOOD DAY TO DIE”, you will be mistaken. Because I do not share their opinion. Despite the Paul Greengrass editing style and the shorter running time, I still enjoyed the movie very much . . . in fact, more than I thought possible. As I had stated earlier, Skip Woods penned a very strong story for the movie. Yes, it featured the usual over-the-top action that has been a hallmark of the franchise for years. One of my favorite scenes proved to be John, Jack and Komarov’s escape from the CIA safe house in Moscow. It not only gave Bruce Willis (or his stunt man) another chance to prove how great he can be as on-screen badass, but it also gave Jai Courtney, who portrayed Jack McClane, a chance to show that his character is a badass, as well. In fact, another scene provided more great moments for both Willis and Courtney – namely the McClane men’s escape from death after they and Komarov were captured by Alix.
One of the best aspects of Woods’ screenplay proved to be the complicated story surrounding the strained relationship between Chagarin and Komarov. This storyline provided audiences an interesting peek into Russian politics – if it is somewhat accurate. I suspect that it is not completely accurate, but this is a work of fiction we are talking about, not a documentary. More importantly, Woods’ story added the Chernobyl disaster as a catalyst to the former colleagues’ estrangement . . . enabling audiences a chilling peek at the infamous Chernobyl site in the Ukraine, during the movie’s final action scene. This sequence also provided a plot twist that brought back a memories of the 1990 film, “DIE HARD 2”. The best aspect of “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” is that the movie allowed a more satisfying portrayal of the relationship between John and Jack than “LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD” did for John and Lucy, five-and-a-half years earlier.
Speaking of the relationship between the two McClane men, it would not have worked without the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney. I understand that the movie’s casting director considered a good number of actors – including Liam Hemsworth and James Badge Dale – before Australian actor Jai Courtney was chosen. Willis was in top form, as usual. I found Willis very effective in portraying McClane’s desire to reconcile with his son in conflict with the NYPD cop’s penchant for butting into situations where he is not wanted. And he formed a top-notch chemistry with Courtney. The latter did an excellent job in portraying Jack’s initial resentment toward John, his growing regard for the latter and intense fixation on his mission. German actor Sebastian Koch (whom I have seen in 2011’s “UNKNOWN” and 2015’s “BRIDGE OF SPIES”. gave a subtle, yet complex portrayal of Yuri Komarov, the former billionaire and criminal who found a conscious and exposed his former partner. Sergei Kolesnikov gave a solid performance as the corrupt politician Viktor Chagarin. But I found Yuliya Snigir very impressive as Komarov’s daughter Irina, who proved to be more than meets the eye. I wish I could say the same about Radivoje Bukvić, who portrayed Chagarin’s main henchman. But I found his performance a little over-the-top. It was nice to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead reprise her portrayal of Lucy McClane, and she proved to be as spunky as ever. But Cole Hauser was really effective as Mike Collins, Jack’s CIA partner. He was subtle, brutal and slightly scary. And his performance made me wish he had more scenes.
I can understand the critics’ disappointment with the shorter running time and quick flash editing in “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD”. But despite these flaws, the movie still proved to be very entertaining, thanks to solid, yet slightly flawed direction by John Moore, an interesting story penned by Skip Woods and a first- rate cast led by Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney.

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
Tumblr media
Live Free or Die Hard a.k.a. Die Hard 4.0 pushed the franchise to this limits but it's a documentary compared to A Good Day to Die Hard. This fifth and final chapter is a dumb, ugly, badly written film populated with templates instead of characters. Thankfully, it's so thin and unmemorable, it passes by like nothing and then exits your memory.
In Moscow, corrupt Russian official Viktor Cagarin (Sergei Kolesnikov) is strongarming former billionaire and government whistleblower Yuri Komarov (Sebastian Koch). Unless Yuri hands over his secret files incriminating Viktor, Yuri will never see the light of day again. When his trial is interrupted by a terrorist attack, Jack McClane (Jai Courtney) pulls Yuri out of the wreckage and they go on the run. Meanwhile, NYPD detective John McClane (Bruce Willis), unaware that his son works for the CIA, travels to Russia to rescue Jack.
Remember how John McClane’s biggest obstacle in the original film was a floor covered in glass? No one in this movie does. There’s “protagonist armour” and then, there’s the forcefield around this man. At various points throughout, John survives two car crashes within the span of ten minutes and walks away from them without even dusting himself off, he pulls a piece of jagged metal shrapnel from his leg as if it’s a wooden splinter, he jumps out of a glass window without hesitation before falling through half a dozen floors of wooden scaffolding and getting up again to keep the nonsense going. If they make another one of these, they might as well have him flying around the city shooting lazer beams from his eyes. Gaining super powers would be the only thing that could happen to a man who emerges from a pool of radioactive water like it’s nothing. Even Superman has well-documented weaknesses. 2013’s John McClane is IN-VIN-CIBLE.
From the director of Max Payne and the writer of Hitman comes a film that doesn’t care about anything and who banks entirely on an audience blinded by nostalgia. When John isn’t arguing with his son and making fun of him for working for the CIA (what?), he’s the living embodiment of “The Ugly American”. Having demolished the first car he’s stolen, he walks in the middle of traffic. He nearly gets hit by a car. The driver gets out, yelling at him. What does John do? He punches this man in the face, yells at him for speaking in Russian - in Russia - and then drives off with his vehicle. This is our hero?
I’ve focussed my thoughts almost exclusively on John because he’s the only character in the film. Well, that’s being generous. He’s more of a collection of sarcastic remarks than an actual human being. Jack is frustrated and determined. That's it. The villains? They’re a joke. Radivoje Bukvić plays a tap-dancing, carrot-eating baddie who's less threatening than Bugs Bunny. He does suceed in making your jaw fall to the floor, which is something but I can’t imagine what anyone was thinking with that nothing of a role.
There are more plot holes than plot in A Good Day to Die Hard. You think I’m joking, but not really. You'll see the twists coming. Character arcs? The closest thing we get to one is Jack shifting from calling his father “John” to “Dad” near the end. For comparison, here's my short list of things that make no sense:
If Yuri Komarov’s super secret file will expose Viktor Chagarin for the crook that he is, why does he want it back? Shouldn’t he just want Yuri dead so he can’t share it?
How can John and Jack - travelling via stolen car - get to Chernobyl nearly as quickly as a helicopter?
When did they invent those magic wands that can spray steam and make radiation disappear? If those exist, why haven’t they cleaned up all of Chernobyl?
Why aren’t there any police in Moscow? At one point, the villains fly a war helicopter through the city, blasting at buildings willy-nilly. We never even hear a single siren down below.
Why did Irina (Yulia Snigir) kill herself to avenge her father?
How are Jack and John supposed to get out of the country when they’re just created a second nuclear disaster by blowing up a safe full of radioactive materials less than twelve hours after engaging in a high-speed chase that saw at least a dozen cars (and their passengers) get squished?
Why didn’t that taxi driver (Pasha D. Lynchnikoff) ever come back?
I distinctly remember the theatrical release of A Good Day to Die Hard. A friend asked me if I wanted to see it with him. I said yes because I knew that at the nearby Futureshop, I could buy a Blu-ray of the original film and with it, get a promo code to see this new release for less than $3. Did paying less enhance my experience? Not really. I paid nothing to see A Good Day to Die Hard a second time and it sucks even more now! (February 11, 2022)

Hypnosis Mic -D.R.B.- Rule the Stage (Liberty Guild vs. Dotsuitare Hompo)
Sypnosis:
After managing to defeat the other teams in the qualifying rounds, it is announced that Liberty Guild will be the team representing Okinawa Division in the D.R.B. This is a first, as they will be the first-ever foreign team to participate in a Japanese rapping tournament.
After a day of work, Ace Douglas, leader of Liberty Guild, prepares to leave and head back to Okinawa. However, he is stopped by none other than Rei Amayado, a well-known conman and a member of Osaka Division's rap team, the Dotsuitare Hompo. Though the two have seen each other in Chuohku, they've not actually talked to each other before this moment.
When Ace inquires Rei as to what he wants, the conman simply offers him two tickets to a comedy show hosted by his friend, Sasara Nurude, leader of the Dotsuitare Hompo. Though he doesn't fully trust Rei and has no liking for Japanese comedy, Ace, nonetheless, takes the tickets, if only so he can hurry up and begone from the conman's presence. Upon returning to Eagle's Nest, he offers the tickets to his girlfriend and fellow team member, Evelyn Rose, who begs Ace to come with her. Though he doesn't want to, he eventually gives in.
While the two are at the show, Rashaad Young, owner of Eagle's Nest and the third member of Liberty Guild, is taking an afternoon nap, which, unfortunately, is interrupted by none other than Rei, whom Rashaad has had dealings with in the past. Though he doesn't trust the conman, he reluctantly lets him in the bar and asks him what he wants. At first, Rei evades the question, but then answers by asking Rashaad what are his reasons for joining the D.R.B. Rashaad retorts by flipping the question back to Rei, who, again, evades answering. He finishes the drink that Rashaad gave him and prepares to leave, but not before warning Rashaad that getting mired in events that don't concern him will put him in a bad spot. Rashaad simply states that Rei should 'take his own advice'.
Meanwhile, at the show, Ace decides to give it a chance as Sasara begins his routine. However, the comedian's humor is lost on the diplomat, and he spends the remainder of his time on his cell phone, browsing through PROFILE. This doesn't go unnoticed by Sasara who chooses to mix things up a bit by telling jokes about America, which doesn't escape Ace's attention. At first, he doesn't really mind until one of Sasara's jokes goes too far and insults his grandfather. This causes Ace to lose his temper and step on stage where he then makes a "joke" about Sasara's horrid rap and comedy skills. At this point, a rap battle ensues that ends in a draw between the two leaders.
The very next day, news of the incident reaches everywhere throughout Japan. Rei, who foresaw this occurring, is pleased as he knew that Ace would lose his cool when his country is involved. It is for this reason that a match between the Liberty Guild and the Dotsuitare Hompo is scheduled to occur. Although all of Okinawa and a few outlying areas are on the side of Liberty Guild, they are hopelessly outnumbered, as most of Japan is on the side of Osaka Division. This does little to hamper Ace, as he promises to get revenge on Sasara for his words.
Now, with the two teams facing each other, the battle soon begins. Will Liberty Guild manage to uphold the honor and pride of America in this epic fight? Or will the Dotsuitare Hompo have the last laugh against the United States team?

Finally, official confirmation of Santi’s role in Eva Longaria’s Land of Women.
For those who don’t have time to read the article: Cabrera will play Amat, who has lived in La Muga for only a couple of years. While he likes to keep to himself, he has a heart of gold and has quickly earned the affection of the townsfolk… and perhaps even Gala’s. He spends most of his time among the vines and in the little winery that he shares with the village co-op.

Ace and Erza brother and sister Pt. 1
"If you have a brother or sister, tell them you love them every day – that’s the most beautiful thing" Amaury Nolasco.
"A sister is both your mirror and your opposite" Elizabeth Fishel
"Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero" Marc Brown
"Side by side or miles apart, we’re brother and sister connected by the heart"
United by blood, built with love. There can be no better companion than a brother. There can be no better friend than a sister.
The bond of a brother and sister is always special. It is one of the best relationships as compared to relationships we share with all other people. This relationship can be best understood by some of the best brother-sister quotes over the years. The connection between a brother and a sister is a lifelong connection with everlasting memories. Despite those cute fights, they encourage, protect and stand by each other at all times. The seesaw of a sibling relationship is balanced by love and trust. Erza Scarlet and Portgas D. Ace preparing to fight side by side. Both strong and defending their nakama, Ace and Erza are half brother and half sister both are the illegitimate children of the Pirate King Gold Roger they have gone through hell and back but their nakama has always had their backs and helped them get back on their feet. Like any brother and sister they share love and support for each other and care deeply for one another.
