It’s Analysis Friday! The new Little Mermaid movie has some great additions to clean up legitimate questions we’ve all had, as well as homages and nice new tropes.

The human world’s setting only confirms what I’ve said since childhood: it’s a Mediterranean Spanish/Portuguese/ island kingdom, not Danish!

In Under the Sea, Ariel adds lovely musical flourishes and interactions. Why? She needs to convince Sebastian to drop his guard so she leave without drawing attention.

During Poor Unfortunate Souls, there’s no longer a contract, but a blood oath, eliminating the loophole of Ariel knowing how to write.

During the same scene, amnesia about this deal is added into the Latin spell without Ursula even mentioning it! Such is the price of not knowing how to write, huh?

The new songs Wild, Uncharted Waters, For the First Time, and Scuttlebutt are all Lin Manuel Miranda’s takes on the mood and topics of their respective characters’ songs from the musical.

Prince Eric now has depth! He and Ariel bond over their nerdy curiosity of the world, have parental conflicts over it, and even have their own personal hideaways of wonders. OTP!

The climax hinges on a proposal party, not a wedding, which gets rid of the cringe and is much more realistic to how royal marriages happen.

Grimsby thinks Vanessa is sus, as is Eric’s state when in her direct vicinity. His hiding the proposal ring over this gives Ariel her chance to reclaim her voice.

Hot take, but I don’t think Sebastian’s accent is meant to be Jamaican like the original. It seems reminiscent of it, yes, just like the setting is reminiscent of Mediterranean island cultures. I’m seeing it as a mild homage while more firmly sealing the worldbuilding.
