thank you anon for bringing this lie to everyone's attention! seasoned veterans will recognize this quote from one daniel howell in reference to philip lester's eyes:

some may claim that this is not a lie, but rather just dan being ignorant. perhaps, one might say, dan truly thought that he could go swimming in phil's eyes. however, dan is a man of science. surely he understood that it is physically impossible for a person to go swimming ("the sport or activity of propelling oneself through water using the limbs") in another person's eyes (not made of water, very bad if limbs enter). thus, we should, nay, are forced to draw the conclusion that dan was LYING!

why daniel j. howell would make such a blatant fabrication is unfathomable. this just goes to show that even in 2009, dan was a liar who did not care that he was obviously presenting falsehoods. and the fact that phil lester (AmazingPhil) would go along with said lie is repugnant.

Now we delve into the world of IRL shippers. And it would be wrong of us not to focus on two of the OG YouTubers.

The pair first interacted with each other in 2009, when Phil (going by AmazingPhil) was sent a message by Dan Howell asking for advice from the YouTuber (who for 2009 standards was quite popular). The two began talking and became quite good friends, eventually moving into an apartment in Manchester. This was the start of their collaborative career that would go on for years.

With their content becoming more and more popular the duo were eventually contacted by BBC and ended up with their own show known as the 'Dan and Phil show'. This show ran from January 2013 - August 2014 and became a massive success, allowing fans to feel more connected to the two and becoming more invested in a possible romance between the two. The show was such a success that they even won the Sony Golden Headphones Award, and with the money the duo gained they moved from Manchester to London.

After the show ended, the pair went on to create a new collaborative title DanAndPhilGAMES where the duo played competitively against each other, keeping track of the winner of each video game on a makeshift leader-board.

The pair continued to do more and more things as a duo, and rarely anything alone. They wrote a book, had two tours and even had cameos together in movies. However, after their second tour, the two of them took a step away from their collaborative channels, stepping away from the YouTube spotlight. The burnout and exhaustion had hit them both.

They briefly both came back onto YouTube in June 2019. Dan first on the 13th with a video entitled 'Basically I'm gay' where he covered his life, struggles with internal and external homophobia and the fear of being outed due to the 'Phan ship'. He also confirmed fans' speculations that they were previously romantically involved, yet did not cover if this was still the case. Then later on the 30th Phil released a video titles 'Coming out to you'. After these videos the two once again went on hiatus.

Although content between the two isn't what it used to be, we do know they are currently living together in their current 'forever home'. But, recently the DanAndPhilGAMES has been up and running, showing signs old content is coming back

Type of Ship: Queer, but no information if they're together

The two, understandably, have kept quiet regarding their relationship with one of the two stating how "I'm someone who wants to keep the details of my personal life private". When the ship was at it's most popular during the mid-2010's and was one of the most popular ships during this time (especially on AO3).

However, with this came trauma for both Dan and Phil. They were always constantly bombarded with questions about the ship and their sexuality which was a big factor in them starting their hiatus. Dan explains how during this time it was traumatising due to the intensity of the fans and said how even though he appreciated the effort fans put in, being constantly bombarded with questions regarding sexuality during a time when he was questioning it himself was not what he needed. Or what Phil needed.

It just seemed that fans could not disconnect fiction from real life, and treat them like they were just characters in a wattpad fanfic without thinking of personal boundaries. It's fortunate that fans have learnt from their mistakes and we can see that Dan and Phil are slowly remerging with their original content.

Can we please acknowledge how fucked up it was to ship Dan and Phil? Please, don't ship real people. Learn from this. Dan felt constantly under attack because it felt to him as if we were trying to out him. Shipping real people is a privacy breach (especially if it's a queer ship). let’s talk rpf (and how to not shame people who create content you’re not interested in)

“i personally think rpf is creepy and uncomfortable” and “it’s none of my business as long as fanfic writers are being respectful” CAN COEXIST.

i get it!! to an extent i do find rpf creepy and uncomfortable and it can be disrespectful. so guess what i do!! i simply... don’t read it?? have you considered just?? not reading it?? did you know that’s possible?? i simply keep scrolling when i see phanfic in dnp tags and leave people alone and i don’t shame them for it or judge them for it...

because NOT EVERYTHING ONLINE IS FOR ME. AND THAT IS OK. macdoesit always talks about how easy it is to just not look at something online that you don’t want to. we aren’t the centers of the world!! we each have different tastes and opinions. so as long as no one is doing damage, let’s leave each other alone

as for dnp specifically, it seems like at this point they encourage creative writing inspired by their content and have literally written some themselves. this doesn’t mean i think rpf is always ok or even usually ok. people suck at boundaries. i do believe it is inherently creepy to write something about a real person you don’t know and then try to show it to them. but that’s another point: what space is this content in?? if it’s on fanfic sites then that doesn’t hurt anyone!!

basically, if you think rpf writers are automatically bad people (bc apparently you think it is ok to judge someone’s entire being based off of knowing literally one thing about them??) don’t draw attention to them!! i get that you’re angry, and that’s ok. use that fire and channel it into making change on a bigger level.

ph*nfic writers: go off. your content isn’t for me, and that’s ok. that could not matter less. i am one person. be respectful and know where to draw the line (or don’t, you have autonomy) (but please do actually but know that i’m not trying to talk down to you) and keep creating. from one writer to another, your voice and style are valid and YOU ARE VALID. also keep those crack fics coming bc i DO read those and they’re hilarious 💗
