Headcanon du jour: What if most Vulcan’s aren’t massively bigoted space racists?

The majority Vulcans we’ve met have essentially been Vulcan Royalty. You know, the institution which, here on Earth, is notorious for being bigoted, backwards, and inbred. 

Tuvok and T’Lynn aren’t like that. 

But then, they’re not direct descendants of Surak, son of a galactically famous ambassador, born and raised in the capital city of Shi’Khar, heirs to a massive estate on the homeworld, and educated in schools where admission to the elite Vulcan Science Academy is taken for granted. 

Spock is the adult Vulcan equivalent of Prince Archie, if Harry hadn’t left The Institution.

Of COURSE we get flashbacks of Vulcan kids bullying Spock! The Learning Center is equivalent to the sort of British Boarding School where they sent King Charles. These places are meant to break kids. They’re all about exclusivity and maintaining the elite status quo. After all, maintaining tradition is only logical, and holy shit do Vulcans love their rituals - even if those rituals include hardcore school bullying. 

Look at how the British royal family and media treat Meghan Markle. Now look at how all the Vulcans in Spock’s orbit treat Amanda Grayson. If Amanda had married a nice Vulcan biologist somewhere out in the colonies no one would have cared, but no, she married the single most high profile Vulcan Royalty of his generation. Plenty of Vulcans were no doubt jealous she snatched up that prize of a bondmate, then masked it as criticizing his choice for being “illogical in the extreme.” 

I like to think that most Vulcans are just out there living their best IDIC lives. 

Meanwhile, the S’chn T’gai family is out there living by Royalty Rules in everything they do. 

Mutiny? Pshaw. Our great grandmother T’Pau knows a guy who knows a guy who will make the paperwork disappear. Stealing a ship? Well, the family could buy it outright, but that would be gauche. Starting a cult? Sybok is a direct descendant of Surak himself. Who better to lead a revolution?

This is something I believe probably happened on the Entiprise at some point.

It was a quiet day (a terrifying concept to everyone in Starfleet) and Chekov is bored so he decides to go around the crew and jokingly ask them if they are the favourite child.

He jokingly goes up to Spock because everyone knows he's an only child and asks him if he's his father's favourite child

Deadpan Spock responds with a firm no.

Years later a confused crew becomes even more confused when they meet Sybok because how the hell is this Crazy emotional Vulcan Sarek's favourite child!

Sybok is amused by this and keeps up the ruse. In memory of his favourite family member.

i've got my grubby mitts on vintage sarek/amanda fanfic that wonderful people have posted online and!!! it's really making me think about vulcans (when do i not) and how sensitive they must really be to thought and uncontrolled emotion (duh). i mean, it's one think to know the abstract idea that vulcans have to work at blocking out their emotions and shielding themselves from others, but to read a story where it's a genuinely harrowing experience for them is something else entirely. what must that be like, to feel so much from others to the point that it can totally upset your balance. in these fics the going idea is that amanda has to totally relearn how to control her thoughts and emotions. the average human does - you learn what reactions are appropriate to certain situations, how to hold yourself around others, and when/where to express certain needs. (it took me until i was 23 to learn that hey, maybe don't say the first thing that pops into your head! and also your actions actually do affect others around you! i am still learning every day what exactly is appropriate to express, and i still find other people a complete mystery). it makes amanda seem so strong. to me, a bond like a vulcan marriage must bear your entire being to the other person. they can see everything that you are, everything that makes you you. the parts of your personality that you instinctively hide from others. even the parts that you hide from yourself. your souls are intertwined. not only that, but what you are actively thinking and feeling at any given moment, if you're not shielding yourself well. as a human, that kind of self control doesn't come easy to amanda. it's not healthy for a human to hide and block themselves from feeling their emotions. she's so strong to choose that kind of life, that self control. and for a vulcan, to feel deeply for a human, to allow yourself to reveal the vulnerability not only to another person but to yourself... to face the fact that yes, you do feel, and you feel for someone who is totally different from what you intrinsically are... that also takes strength. i honestly love their relationship. no, it's not perfect. we see in canon that it isn't. but they do care for each other. vulcans (and sarek) may not voice it, but they do love. and they love deeply.

S2 episode 10 (Journey To Babel) THE BOYFRIENDS ARE GONNA MEET SPOCKS DAD:

- McCoy immediately complaining about dress uniforms. I love him and his short sleeves

- Wait- why is McCoy in Jim’s room while he’s getting ready? I don’t usually use emojis but 🤨

- Spock joins them walking down the hallway so fast. No way he didn’t plan that.

- They do not know it’s his father, do they?

- I love the long dramatic scene of the shuttle coming in with all the redshirts standing around

- Kirk realizes Spock won’t admit that he is feeling worried so he does as Spock wishes and carries on with their mission

- It’s an Andorians, isn’t it?

- When your son and his two boyfriends are standing over your hospital bed (one of them is your doctor as well)

- McCoy you should know what Spock’s blood type is.. oh wait I think it’s just cause Spock would not survive losing that much blood

- McCoy not to letting his idiot boyfriend die. Especially by his own hand in his own damn medbay

- Spock is such a bitch when he has a purpose

- The jump cut to Kirk fighting an andorian.. Bones will have to put up with a lot of his idiot boyfriends almost dying in this episode, won’t he?

- Kirk after top surgery- who said that (no I’m not posting a photo of what I’m referring to)

- Amanda saying ‘human’ isn’t a dirty word to Spock is such a healing sentence. LIKE EMBRACE YOURSELF

- Spock’s voice wavering as he talks to his mom

- “And I’ll hate you for the rest of my life.” WHAT. SHE SLAPPED HIM.

- “Now let that be a lesson to you. Just lie there and be happy you’re still alive.” Bones is unimpressed with Jim almost dying

- Shiny bandage on Kirk

- damn this Medbay has no fucking privacy

- The reanimator vibes from McCoy rn are peak

- The old cardio stimulator looks like a fancy stapler

- Okay if they’re not andorian, then who?

- Bones teasing Kirk and Kirk just wants to know if Spock is okay cause he’s in so much pain

- Orions? I should’ve guessed…

- “Emotional, isn’t she?” “She has always been that way.” “Indeed? Why did you marry her?” “At the time it seemed the most logical thing to do.” Spock makes a considering face and Kirk and McCoy look at each other like “we’re gonna marry this guy.”

- Bones trying to keep them in medbay will be like trying to trap a cloud in a jar. He’s so happy to have them in his medbay so he doesn’t have to go to the bridge 

That went surprisingly well. The journey has ended but what is our destination? Why, the next episode of course! See you next time :)

Spock's knowledge of musicals come from Amanda, I believe that it was just their thing. Mother and son bonding and a secret from Sarek who beloved that the entire concept of it was illogical.

Spock's knowledge on Pirates and cowboys were purely taught to him by Michael. Michael was told by Sarek to teach Spock about humanity and little miss I've only ever lived on a space station my entire life went, yes these two things are what Spock needs to know about.

Spock was disappointed at the lack of cowboys at the academy.
