Emergency alert system to be tested in the Maritimes Wednesday
Alert Ready, Canada’s emergency alert system, will be tested in all three Maritimes provinces Wednesday.
The system’s alert tone will be heard on TVs, radios and cell phones. Compatible LTE-connected wireless devices will also vibrate with a text message indicating it is only a test.
The test will be done at 10:55 a.m. in New Brunswick, 12:55 p.m. in Prince Edward Island and 1:55 p.m. in Nova Scotia.
The test is being done across Canada Wednesday, except for in the Yukon, Alberta and Quebec.
Emergency alerts can be broadcasted for a variety of situations, ranging from fires, natural disasters to amber alerts.
Alerts have been used 12 times so far this year in Nova Scotia -- twice for 911 service and 10 times for a civil emergency.
New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have not issued any.
Another national Alert Ready test will take place in November.

Working out the world concept
This feels incomplete, but it's just me messing around with the notion of how to keep a secret world secret. I think at first, it would have to be something that someone in power would want to keep secret as it would be bad PR (to say the least) and a potentially exploitable limited resource.

Facility 01: the Fool's Nexus
The first prophecies were seen ten years ago when the first nexus point was accidentally created in the place now known as "Facility 01" or more informally as "The Fool's Nexus", located in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of Alaska, right next to the Canadian border. Reaves Nuclear Research was attempting to create a more efficient method of producing power on behalf of their corporate investors. They made their own large hadron collider, obscured by seclusion, cold, and dark. It was different from the one that CERN had built, of course. The details are long, dry, and technical. They must have been the root of the vastly different result. Or maybe it was the time and place. People may be arguing about that for centuries. In any case, we can all agree that it was the first.
They unwittingly opened up a rift in reality. A place that's hard to speak of in purely technical terms. Natural laws are different there and there is a definite central point. On the first day of November that year, they opened the first nexus.
There was a small town built around the research facility. Technically, the town's name was a soulless string of numbers but the residents unofficially named it after the pronunciation of the company's name. Arenar was a place where the lab workers & technicians could live with their families. It had its own with local police, a fire department, supply stores, and even a movie theater and a K-12 school. A cozy 2,029 residents in all. Reaves knew that people had to be comfortable to be productive. They wanted to help the world. For many, that relatively isolated space was home for the five years it existed.
It's unknown precisely what it was that created the nexus. There was some structural damage to the building itself where the nexus opened. A swirling eye of purple and amber where things were not pulled in or expelled, but energy flowed. Records and testimonies are sometimes hard to understand and contradictory. Our investigators have pieced together the most likely unfolding of events, but as new information comes forward, reality may shift.
In isolated communities like Arenar, ritual and tradition take predominance. It was Halloween night. The community building was still decorated for the fourth annual Halloween dance, recently acquired candy still sat in pillowcases, and jack o' lanterns still sat frozen solid by people's front doors. It was 3:17 in the morning, so the only people awake were some RNR employees (it was a 24-hour facility) and a gathering of a dozen adolescents who were enacting their plans to watch horror movies and generally be teenagers until dawn unbeknownst to their guardians.
Every survivor from within 5-6 km of RNR (all of Arenar and some scattered homesteads) experienced a hum so deep that it was felt rather than heard. Survivors describe a sense of not knowing what to expect next, just that it was going to be “big”. Those that looked out of their windows towards the RNR building report the northern lights (a common sight) turning a deep violet and forming concentric circles around that spot for a few moments. Then came the visions. The details of each person's experience was unique, influenced by elements of their lives and recent experiences, much like dreams. However there were themes present in all of them.
A war between two vast armies. Regular citizens trapped in the crossfire. Then an amber-violet force formed out of the air. Survivors describe experiencing “true awe” for the first time in their lives. It was clearly not on any side. Just indescribably vast, powerful and extremely present. Then something no one can remember.
Some say they experienced something truly divine. Others claim it was the purest evil. Security camera footage from within RNR shows that the people closest to the nexus point (the "severe damage" zone) rambled incoherently while clawing at their faces. Screaming word salad and gibberish louder and louder until their eardrums and eyes simply burst. Every person in RNR and some of the closest houses seem to have experienced this. Autopsies would later show massive brain hemorrhaging resulting from a massive bio-electrical discharge emanating from deep within the hippocampus. In some cases it was strong enough to burn the inside of their skulls.
People in surrounding houses and buildings, the moderate damage zone, suffered a similar fate, but less powerful. They all lost their eyes, most lost their hearing as well. They spoke uncontrollably about the vision. They died within the next few days. Their corpses kept describing the vision for weeks, often when decomposition or direct intervention prevented them from being physically able to make sounds.
The light damage zone had people who experienced the visions and were deeply traumatized by them. They were all permanently blinded, some were also deafened. It's from them we get the most detailed accounts of the visions.
The minimal damage zone is beyond the edges of Arenar, experienced only by a small handful of homesteaders. Seventeen men, women and children. Temporary blindness and tinnitus both clearing up after a few weeks. Those people were “haunted” by what they saw. They all knew with absolute certainty that they did not witness the whole vision, and that it was a prophecy. None remember beyond the first few seconds of the presence.
It's one of them that named the presence. “Cras” The Latin word for “tomorrow”. Despite being divided on the interpretation of these visions, all the survivors immediately took to using that name. Tomorrow is, after all, inevitable but not here yet.
It took hours for rescue workers to be alerted and travel to Arenar. They reported no unusual activity in the northern lights. No fires or screaming. All the survivors that weren't rambling about the vision were patiently waiting. Some had traveled to each other's homes and were tending to each other. One resident was presumed to be attempting that, but being freshly blind lost her way. A neighbor heard her calling for help and attempted a rescue. The cold took them both. There were 1439 survivors that night. Within three months, that number was reduced to 959.
It was later discovered that the time between the incident and rescue workers arriving was not entirely quiet. At 5:37 am, security cameras show something coming out of the nexus. A powerfully radiant light that made a terrible cacophonous sound. One researcher described it as “Several howler monkeys, but set as high sopranos”. Other researchers agree that it's not a perfect description, it's pretty close. Its edges are hard to define due to its brightness going beyond what the camera could process. It seemed to be an amorphous mass maintaining a roughly spherical shape. It produced small tendrils and used those to rapidly push itself along, leaving behind a trail we'd later learn is deeply frozen condensation. Frost formed around it. It went to the nearest wall in the lab and followed it. It pushed lightweight objects out of its way but moved around heavier equipment. When it discovered a researcher, it explored his body, taking special interest around his head. Due to the brightness, it's unknown what it was doing. Actual examination of the body showed that it too was deeply frozen (as if submerged in liquid helium then left to “thaw” for a few hours) and “smelled like a gas station” according to a rescue worker.
Cameras show it dragging itself directly out of the building, stopping to examine three other bodies that happen to be in its path. It crossed the parking structure and outside, eventually beyond camera range. A densely frozen “trail” was found outside, presumably from the thing. It was going southeast. The trail eventually dissipated. Survivors remember hearing the sounds, some thought it was unearthly singing, others thought it was a siren of some kind. The ones that were close enough describe feeling a wave of cold and smelling benzine. Some people seemed to move towards it, they were found grinning and standing frozen to their core. After a few kilometers beyond the edge of Arenar, the trail dissipates. There have been no reported sightings of it since.
Reaves Nuclear Research is a subsidiary of the Galloway business group. Randell Galloway paid Reaves a lot of money to keep the truth of the “Alaska Incident” secret, selling it as an unfortunately nuclear accident. This is also the time when RNR built a subsequent second facility in Brazil...

History/Bio:
Akshay was born to American parents; Gaurav Lah-Mo (Twin Brother of Ranveer, who was Xaviera's father) and Adabelle, when they were on vacation in Canada, Yukon. His childhood was pretty normal, the average one, great parents, good education and he looked up to his father's twin brother, appreciating the career as a zoologist. Akshay aspired to do something similar, wanting to be as close to nature as possible.
When he was 14, his mother died of cancer, leaving him only with his father who dedicated his full time to raising Akshay and offering him parental warmness. Gaurav was devasted when he received the news about his twin brother's death, only being more caring with Akshay, helping him achieve the dream of being an ecologist and researcher.
Akshay went to college, getting a degree in biology and opting for ecology, getting chances of traveling, and such.
When he was 27, Akshay obtained a research mission along with a military department in Alaska, only for a cruel blizzard to crash their plane in the heart of the Alaskan Mountains.
Akshay along with one of his biology colleagues were the only survivors of the crash. They tried to survive with what little supplies they had, but that only lasted for three days. Akshay looked over the dead bodies and proposed to eat them so they could survive, but his colleague was totally against it. They managed two days, but the hunger was too much, so Akshay tried to cut a piece of flesh from one of the bodies, only to be stopped by his partner.
A fight started, only to be finished when Akshay got his hands on an AK-47 from the crashed plane, shooting his partner and killing him. Being the only survivor and none to stop him, he survived by the ultimate resort; cannibalism.
After two weeks in the mountains, the rescue team managed to locate the crashed plane, and Akshay. They got him into the first close town to treat his wounds and take care of him.
When Akshay tried to call his father, wanting to tell him that he is alright, he got the devasting news that his father killed himself, thinking that Akshay is dead, his wife no more along with his twin brother; it was too much for him, so he shot himself.
Having nothing to go back home for, Akshay decided to stay in Alaska, continuing his job as an ecologist and a free-time writer, keeping a journal for his thoughts that sometimes hunt him.
Akshay lives close to a small, quiet town in Alaska, in a two-story cabin, enjoying the quietness of nature and away from the loudness of the big city life.
Personality:
Akshay can come off as cold, hard, and harsh; the perfect epitome of an iceberg, but he simply prefers to keep to himself. He is intimidating, with icy grey eyes and his tall/broad frame only adds to that image.
He can be quite sarcastic if someone persists in annoying him, making them run for the hills.
One big characteristic of Akshay is his double personality. In his usual day to day is calm, quiet, writing in his journal, enjoying the scenario nature has to offer him, studying it.
The other part that still haunts him, is the sight of blood. It reminds him of what happened deep in the Alaskan Mountains, how he eats the people he was supposed to work with. The sight of blood triggers his feral rage and he completely turns 180 degrees from a calm mountain to a destructive bulldozer.
He is usually triggered by hunters, illegal loggers, people that destroy nature. He is a very dangerous man then; he even smashed a guy's skull with his foot.
He is also very smart; going to the town's bar, enjoying a drink while listening to a group of men that are playing on illegal logging or hunting. From then on, Akshay just tracks them down.
Hobbies:
Observing nature and researching the ecosystem.
Analyze the cause and effect relationships between species and habitats.
Writing in his journal.
Killing illegal loggers and poachers.
Symbols:
The Polar bear is Akshay's spirit animal and his top symbol. Polar Bear Spirit represents patience and persistence in that the Great White Bear often walks or swims great lengths to find a food source. Akshay has the patience of a God but just like the Polar bear, once he gets to his prey, is all game over. Akshay is like a storm when striking down, destroying everything in his path.
Polar Bear Spirit is a loner; this speaks of self-reliance. The only time Polar Bear interacts with others of the same species is for mating. So, independence is part of Polar Bear Medicine. That goes for Akshay, being a lone man of the Alaskan Mountains, the only people that can get close to him are his s/o and his cousin, Xaviera.
Did you know that polar bears are actually blue? The truth is that they appear white only because they have hollow fur. As such, they are very good at hiding their color. This enhances their survival in a harsh environment. Akshay is very resistant and blends in very easily with the Alaskan tundra. You won't even know it what hit you when the Polar bear carges, until you are a mess of broken bones and blood.
His relationship with Xaviera:
Akshay and Xaviera used to spend time together when Xaviera's parents visited Akshay's family. They had a strong bond together, despite having a a considerate age difference, Akshay played with Xaviera, indulging into her childish. The moment their cousin bond started to get cold was when Akshay left for college, his mothers death already affecting him a little, then Xavieras parents were killed and finally his father took his own life. All these looses made their relationship break, both walking different paths.
Type of Villain: Brutal Mass Murderer
P.S: No. He is not a cannibal. He did that to survive. That’s about it.

Top Five Favourite Classic Books
Tumblr media
Genre: Adventure
Author: Jack London
When it was published: 1906
Plot in 20 words or less: Spicy good doggo lives rough life, wolves eat everything, and eventually someone manages to pet doggo.
“Normal For The Times” Factor: Racism, in text and in Jack London’s personal views (see the link at the bottom for the full post and explanation of what those messed up views are)
Why it’s awesome:
White Fang is one of the first classic books I sought out and read as a younger adult.
While the graphic animal death isn’t for everyone, I really enjoyed seeing everything from White Fang’s point of view, and I found him to be an interesting character to see the world of the Yukon through.
I was drawn in by the horror elements to the introduction, and the more realistic view of nature that other animal POV books I’d read (much love to the Warrior Cats series but they aren’t realistic AT ALL) didn’t have. It felt, to me, like an animal book written for those who wanted to learn about animals.
It was paced well, it was written well, and I really, really enjoyed the ending.
Tumblr media
Genre: Tragedy
Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald
When it was published: 1925
Plot in 20 words or less: Friendly chap meets his cousin’s ex and dude’s got mad money and great people skills, both lead to his downfall
“Normal For The Times” Factor: Character expresses challenged racism, negative stereotypes about Jewish people (proof in full post)
Why it’s awesome:
The Great Gatsby feels like a fly stuck in amber; it cannot exist outside of the time period it’s in, and it’s one of the most fascinating times in history.
I was hooked from the first sentence.
I connected with Nick, though the character I was drawn to the most was, of course, Jay Gatsby. I adored him. I didn’t see what he saw in Daisy and I kind of wanted her to quietly leave the novel and never return, but I also see that Gatsby and Daisy were both flawed people.
It’s a well-written book with excellent characters, and it is a slice of history that deserves it’s timelessness.
Tumblr media
Genre: Comedy, tragedy, mostly a social commentary
Author: Miguel de Cervantes
When it was published: 1605 (for the first part)
Plot in 20 words or less: A man from La Mancha has a midlife crisis and decides reality is overrated and becomes a “knight”
“Normal For The Times” Factor: Written in old Spanish, and translated from old Spanish, so some of the phrases are a bit dated. Pretty sure de Cervantes was not a racist or sexist dude, but he’s also been dead for like 300 years.
Why it’s awesome:
Don Quioxote is the second most translated book ever, after the freaking Bible, so you know it’s gotta be good.
It’s like the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure of literature; once you read it, you see tributes and references to it EVERYWHERE.
While it is a tragedy and a portrayal of Spanish society at the time, it’s also freaking hilarious, which makes the tragedy hit all the harder.
I don’t know if I agree with scholars who say it’s the greatest work of literature, but it’s definitely one of the best.
If you haven’t read it I’d recommend trying it, but make sure you get a good translation because the book is originally in Spanish. If you don’t want to read this long book, see if you can find a recording of “The Man of La Mancha”, the musical play I mentioned. It’s also excellent!
Tumblr media
Genre: Horror, Science Fiction (The first of it’s kind, the OG scifi novel)
Author: Mary Shelley
When it was published: 1818
Plot in 20 words or less: Man creates monster, decides to be a deadbeat parent, comes to regret it
“Normal For The Times” Factor: None, except for the way the novel is written which is different from how we use language now. Mary Shelley was fucking badass and had awesome parents.
Why it’s awesome:
Even before I’d read the book, I knew the basic gist of the story, and I knew some of the famous lines from the 1930’s motion picture.
When I read the book I fell in love. It’s much different from the movie, which I don’t understand, and so far there hasn’t been many mainstream movies that capture the greatness of this work.
Pop culture leaves a lot to be desired, including perpetuating the idea that the Creature is called Frankenstein. Ugh.
I could go on and on, but I will sum it up with this quote from Tumblr: knowledge is knowing that Frankenstein is not the monster. Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein is the monster.
Back to the great book. And it is great. Not only is it the first science fiction novel, it is also an examination of science, of society, and of the consequences of abuses of both.
It is a classic because the themes of alienation and of science without morality is still so relevant today. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is an example of all the best parts of sci-fi, and if you haven’t read it, do so. Then join me in ranting about how the movies got most of it wrong.
Tumblr media
Genre: Science Fiction
Author: H. G. Wells
When it was published: 1898
Plot in 20 words or less: The Martians are coming, it’s definitely a metaphor for something, cough on aliens to save the world
“Normal For The Times” Factor: H. G. Wells was an anti-Semitic eugenicist, so there’s that
Why it’s awesome:
This book is the quintessential science fiction novel, as famous as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
It’s narrated by a nameless man living in London, and the whole book details the arrival of Martians, his perilous escape from them, and the world under the Martians and their eventual defeat via germs.
I personally found the narrative very tense, despite the old-timey language, and I enjoyed the suspense I was in despite knowing how the whole thing ended.
This one, like Frankenstein, doesn’t have a movie adaptation exactly like the book, as it keeps getting updated for the era the movie is in. Unlike Frankenstein, that doesn’t take away from the book. While the book is tense and well-written, the main character is just kind of there.
The whole book is used to illustrate why colonialism is really bad to England, which I personally enjoy because it’s hilarious how they didn’t get it, though Wells seemed to not really understand himself the depth of the way England tried to wipe out entire cultures. It was more than just diseases. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the uninitiated) recently started broadcasting the Australian adaptation of this story, and I’m looking forward to watching it. he novel isn’t for everyone, but it was a good introduction to scifi for tiny Elka, and is a good example of the genre.

Backwater Wendigo
This is an original story by me. Please do not reblog without giving credit. If you have questions or suggestions, let me know!
Warnings: Death, violence, blood, cursing
Matthew James drove through the small town of Backwater with a large pile of animal pelts in the truck’s bed. In the passenger seat sat a large, black, three-legged wolf whose head hung out the window, its tongue lolling. Backwater, which only held about a thousand people, sat on the western side of the Yukon. As usual for October, the sky was grey and snow was falling lightly. Though the population was laughably small, the town itself was spread out nicely. There weren’t many buildings in Backwater at all; the courthouse doubled as the town hall and the jail sat in the police station itself. Matt passed an old park, but no one was on it; it was simply too cold. Though he was an outsider amongst Backwater’s residents, he enjoyed living outside of the town. In truth, he lived about twenty miles from Backwater, his house nestled at the foot of the Saint Elias Mountains. Matt made a living selling the pelts, meat and bones of animals that he hunted.
Well, that and formerly selling contraband.
At least in Backwater, Matt was able to outrun most of his past. The residents didn’t like him all too much, but that was fine by him. It wasn’t a goal of his to be liked; he only wanted to be left alone.
Matt pulled up to the fur-trading store to drop off his stock. Seven caribou pelts, fourteen rabbit pelts, and even a bear pelt, all tanned and cut. He was getting paid pretty well today.
He walked into the small shop, the wolf limping at his side, glancing around. He stood out a bit. With his dark clothes, pale skin, violet eyes, long strawberry blonde hair that fell past his shoulders and into his eyes, he seemed muted compared to the customers that wore expensive jewelry and shopped for their next fur coat. There were five other people in there, and they all gave him and the wolf nervous glances. An old, round man, named Martin, came out from behind the counter.
“Mr. James, you’ve come with the pelts?”
Matt nodded, continuing to look around the store.
“Wonderful, wonderful. If you’d bring them in …” Martin stayed clear of the wolf, who watched him with amber eyes.
Matt sighed. “C’mon, Logan.” The wolf pricked its ears towards Matt before they trekked back out to his truck. Carefully, Matt unloaded the furs before walking back into the store, watching as people moved out of his way. Placing the pelts on the counter, Matt studied Martin; the way his round face turned red if he spoke too much, and how his voice was quite condescending. Martin was a customer that Matt had to watch; he’d tried to underpay before, as if Matt wouldn’t notice. The old man clapped his hands together, smiling. “Well, Matt, what do we have here?”
“Seven caribou, fourteen rabbits, an’ a bear.”
“That much?! I say, Matt, you must be one of the best hunters around. What about this. I give you ten thousand, five hundred.”
“No.”
“What? What do you mean? Surely that’s enough.” Martin laughed, though there was a certain nervousness behind it.
“I mean, that ain’t nearly enough, an’ you know it. I got seven caribou, which you usually pay three-fifty for. That’s two thousand, four hundred an’ fifty added up. Then I got fourteen rabbits, which go for about ten dollars. That’s a hundred an’ forty more. Then there’s the bear. That’s worth ten thousand, easy. That’s …” Matt paused, thinking. “Twelve thousand, five hundred an’ ninety dollars. Throw in another two hundred ‘cause I already tanned an’ cut ‘em. Tha’s bein’ nice an’ you know it.”
Martin studied Matt, his eyes narrowed, trying to find a way around this. Matt sighed. “I ain’t as expensive as mos’, you know that. Jus’ give me what I ask.”
Martin gave a nervous smile. “Matt, I can never get around you. Alright, you asked for twelve thousand, five hundred and ninety?”
“Plus the two hundred. Twelve thousand, seven hundred and ninety.”
Martin began pulling money from the safe below the counter. “Right, right. Here…” Martin handed Matt a large wad of money, smiling amiably. As Matt took it and began to carefully count it, Martin called over storehands to help with the furs. Before they could take all of them, Matt plucked two rabbit pelts from the pile.
One of the storehands looked confused. “M-Mr. James, what are you …?”
Matt turned his shadowed, violet eyes to the young woman. “I’m twenty short. Ain’t gettin’ two of the rabbits if they ain’t paid for.”
Martin laughed nervously, “Matt, it was an honest mistake. Here -” He handed Matt a twenty dollar bill. Matt studied the man before taking the money and tossing back the rabbit skins. He sighed as he walked out of the store with Logan. He could’ve told Martin off, but it wasn’t worth the trouble and he tried to limit his conversations as much as he could. At least he had gotten paid.
The drive back to his cabin seemed longer than usual. Perhaps it was the interaction with Martin that had him rattled, or perhaps it was the icy road below him. But somehow - he didn’t understand why - he had a nasty feeling that something bad was about to happen.
He decided not to think about it. Like everything else in his life, Matt felt that if he ignored it long enough, it would eventually go away. Usually, that’s what ended up happening. So, he decided to think about the caribou that he’d shot that morning, and how it still needed to be skinned. He thought about this for most of the drive, until he pulled into his snow-covered yard.
Matt owned about twenty acres of land, and most of it was the forest where he hunted. But in the center of the land, in a clearing next to a small, shallow pond, sat the beautiful log house that Matt had built for himself. It had two levels, with dark, floor-to-ceiling windows in the front and a beautiful deck that wrapped around the lower perimeter. Beside it sat a quaint shed, where Matt skinned and tanned his pelts. All around the small clearing loomed tall, dark trees that hid prey and predators alike.
An hour later, Matt was sitting on a stool in his shed, skinning the caribou with a cigarette hanging from his lips. His nose was wrinkled up, hating this part of the job. Logan lounged on the floor beside him, noisily gnawing on a leg that Matt had tossed him. Quietly, he hummed to himself, enjoying the feeling of the cool, crisp air against his face. He felt the color rise to his pale cheeks, making him feel more awake than usual. Though the shed was insulated and had a small heater, it was still a bit cold inside. Matt didn’t mind; he loved the cold. So, he had taken off his coat, exposing the tattoos on his arms.
A black ring of trees surrounded his left bicep. Covering his entire right arm was a black and grey sleeve that depicted tall, dark trees, a mountain, and the moon behind it. Birds flew across the sky and the silhouette of a wolf paced across his wrist. The black ink only made Matt seem paler.
The pelt was hung up to dry and Matt started to work on dividing the caribou meat and cleaning the bones. He kept the less desirable pieces of meat for himself and Logan; he always tried very hard not to waste any part of the animal. Logan suddenly stopped gnawing on the leg and looked up, his ears pinned back. With effort, the wolf stood, getting to the shed door in only two paces. Carefully, Matt set down his tools.
“What is it, Logan?” He crouched next to the wolf, scratching behind its ears.
He heard it before he got the chance to see it.
It was a low, terrible scream that echoed through the trees. Matt swore loudly, the cigarette dropping from his lips to the floor of the cabin. Quickly, he stubbed it out before pulling on his coat, grabbing a lighter and a can of hairspray. He gave a sharp whistle to Logan, who quickly followed him as he slammed the door shut.
The forest was quieter than usual. The dull sunlight barely penetrated the canopy of pine needles and branches. Matt jumped every time a squirrel ran up a tree or he stepped on a small twig. Though the man was silent on his feet, he felt as if the entire world could hear him stomping through the snow. He could smell blood ahead.
Matt and Logan came upon a doe that had been gutted viciously. She was terrified, but her legs wouldn’t move and she was bleeding out fast. She bleated as the two approached, doing her best to try and get away. Matt knelt to inspect the clean, deep rips across her stomach, stroking her neck and sighing. Covering her face, he quickly put her out of her misery, wincing as he did so. Beside him, Logan growled softly.
“Easy, now…” Matt reached down to pet Logan’s head, but he couldn’t help but think the wolf was right to be afraid. No animal in the forest would’ve left a perfectly good meal, and no animal would’ve been able to leave such clean and precise slashes.
Behind them, the leaves rustled. The air around them was still.
As fast as he could, Matt whipped around, brandishing the lighter. About thirty feet away stood a creature that was at least twelve feet tall. It was a horrible, twisted thing. The body was elongated and humanoid, skeletal but muscular. The hands ended in long, sickly fingers topped with deadly claws. The face, however, was the worst. It resembled a deer skull, with dried bits of flesh still hanging on and twisted, unnatural antlers protruding from its crown. Instead of flat, herbivore teeth, the mouth was full of fangs as big as Matt’s fingers. Rotten patches of fur covered the neck and continued down the horrible body. Red eyes watched Matt and Logan with a sort of human amusement. It seemed to be evaluating Matt. As they watched one another, the creature gave a low hiss that sounded very much like a dry laugh.
It charged.
Matt firmly stood his ground, and just as the creature was at arm’s length, he lit the lighter and released the hairspray. There was a sharp pain in Matt’s side before the creature was suddenly engulfed in the flame, letting out a scream that pierced through the woods; a long, dying noise that echoed off of the mountains. The flame was so large that the tips of Matt’s fingers were scorched, though he couldn’t feel it with the adrenaline rushing through his veins.
Finally, the creature fell into the snow, covering the body of the doe it had killed. Its body was a charred husk that was quickly turning to ash, taking the doe with it. The creature had caught Matt’s torso, leaving four long, deep gashes.
Kneeling next to the bodies, Matt shook his head, petting Logan. The wolf had stayed by his side the entire time.
Matt sighed, lighting another cigarette. “Fuckin’ wendigo, ruinin’ a perfectly good day.”
Beside him, Logan huffed in agreement.
Matt groaned softly as he checked his side. The wendigo had cut straight though his thick coat and shirt. He sat on the ground, shedding his layers and readying the lighter. Stitches just wouldn’t fix this injury. The flame hurt, as always, but Matt had grown numb to it. It took a while to close the wounds up, and Matt was shivering by the end. As quickly as he could, he pulled his shirt and coat back on, wincing as the fabric brushed over his newly-cauterized injuries. He finally forced himself to stand, holding a hand over his side as he did. He still had to finish the caribou in the shed.
