But the manga is really good at laying parallels. Of course, this is manga-exclusive, so it's not like re-watching the anime would have helped much.

(Though it did help me notice that Cutthroat did make a magician-themed pun in the anime, but the translation wasn't as witty-sounding.)

Not only did Cutthroat sing Amefuri to himself under the rain as a kid -

...but he also killed his mom in a bathtub.

So when he lied down in a bathtub under the rain and sang it to himself, he was reminiscing happily about killing his mom.

I'm gonna go ahead and post this 28 lunar mansions calculator I found while doing some weird-ass research for a fic.

About 25 years ago I used to be in the Fushigi Yuugi fandom and I would have been so fucking happy to find out there is a way to calculate which senshi correlates to me through the 28 mansions (and, subsequently, so fucking bothered that my star is Azure Dragon's Neck, ie Seiryuu's Amiboshi) that I owe myself posting this in a fandom space where someone might find it.

Anyway click the link, select the year and month of your birthday, scroll until you find the constellation.

Now to which character you are, assuming there is a character. If you fall into one of the White Tiger mansions you're in bad luck because Watase-senpai only released four chapters of the Byakko series before going into hiatus. I assure you I'm very sorry since the Byakko series slaps (and I don't care how many times she needed to retread the same idea, I'm a fanfic reader, I'm absolutely here for it. Gimme more isekaied girls and their mysteical harems).

Anyway, the constellations and their respective senshi:

Vermillion Bird of the South (Suzaku)

井 (Well): Chichiri.

鬼 (Demon): Tamahome. In the manga/anime Tamahome's constellation is translated as ghost (unless you watched the fansub that just slapped oni onto the screen and called it a day), but I assume that's because gui is not a concept you can really translate to western language.

柳 (Willow): Nuriko.

星 (Star): Hotohori.

張 (Extended Net): Chiriko.

翼 (Wings): Tasuki. I'd like to inform you that if this is your constellation I am very, very, very jelous of you.

軫 (Chariot): Mitsukake.

Azure Dragon of the East (Seiryuu)

角 (Horn): Suboshi.

亢 (Neck): Amiboshi. I have to give you that his powers were cool af though.

氐 (Root): Tomo.

房 (Room): Soi. Is it time to have Soi Discourse again?

心 (Heart): Nakago. As usual I'd like to remind you that chinese uses the same word for heart, mind and core. Make of that what you will.

尾 (Tail): Ashitare.

箕 (Winnowing Basket): Miboshi.

Black Tortoise of the North (Genbu)

斗 (Dipper): Hikitsu.

牛 (Ox): Inami.

女 (Girl): Uruki. This one is called Woman in the anime/manga translation and that's as correct as using girl (both words use this hanzi), but the site uses "girl" for the constellation so I'm using "girl" here.

虛 (Emptiness): Tomite

危 (Rooftop): Urumiya. Okay, this one is a weird one. The hanzi means Danger, but the constellation it refers to is Rooftop Lunar Swallow, which is why it's called rooftop.

室 (Encampment): Hatsui.

壁 (Wall): Namame.

White Tiger of the West (Byakko)

奎 (Legs): Tokaki.

娄 (Bond): Tatara.

胃 (Stomach): Kokie.

昴 (Hairy Head): Subaru.

毕 (Net): Amefuri.

觜 (Turtle Beak): Toroki.

参 (Three Stars): Karasuki.

i'm just gonna ramble a lil under the cut about my idea for kaiya's j.jk verse, and y'all can let me know if it's making sense :' )) tw for mentions of child death and domestic abuse -- i don't go into any detail whatsoever, but pls be careful if you find the subject matter upsetting.

i was really trying to figure out why a cursed spirit would want to attach itself to kaiya since they're not known to look favorably upon humans. initially i thought that maybe a yokai like futakuchi onna would see itself in kaiya, who also experiences an abusive relationship with her husband, and decide to help her, but then why would it stick around? kaiya could make a binding vow with it or something, but kaiya wouldn't do that bc she'd view it as a monster even if it did save her from her husband.

then it struck me that maybe a child-like spirit might attach itself to kaiya if it viewed her as its mother. then my brain jumped to the idea that since reincarnation ( of a sort ) is a thing in jjk, kaiya could be the reincarnation of a vengeful cursed spirit's mother! and perhaps that spirit was once a young child whose mother ran away with him, escaping yet another angry man; perhaps things went awry on the road, his mother died, and the child was left to wander alone until he, too, died, and became a cursed spirit. then he continued to wander, confused as to where his mother had gone.

now, that could work a lot better with kaiya's character. she would be distraught and frightened of the cursed spirit, especially if it's just killed her husband, but if it speaks in a child's voice? calls for her as if upset that she's upset?? she'd more inclined to be sympathetic and view the spirit in a gentler light. it wanted to protect her, was scared for her, has been lost and searching for her all this time. it's all very overwhelming in the moment, but i can see kaiya accepting the spirit and protecting it just as it protects her.

i'm still contemplating what the cursed spirit's abilities and appearance will be just bc i don't want him to look too human. but all my brain is imagining atm is a white blob with a lil sedge hat and yukata asdfs i'm tempted for his ability to have something to do with rain so he can be similar to amefuri kozo

#i just think the lil rainy kid is cute and a fun folklore character uvu #but yeah i am definitely using this idea bc it grabbed me by the throat the minute it crossed my mind :' )))#also if anything doesn't make sense/wouldn't fit into jjk pls be honest and tell me!!#functionality-wise i mean. like if my idea of kaiya being the vengeful spirits reincarnated mom sounds like too far of a stretch uvu #get ready to ramble | ooc #headcanons | kaiya #don't wanna lose my ramblings so placing this in kaiya's tag <3
