do you have any favorite bits of trivia about early animation?
the animated version of what pops up in your mind when you think "50s art" is likely to come from United Productions of America. their work gets referenced a lot including by Disney and other big AAA animation companies in the USA. Two famous examples of UPA references people my age likely know by heart include Fantasia 2000's Geschwin short, and the animated credits to Monsters Inc.

Where this is very funny is that UPA was formed by artists who worked for Disney at the time Disney the guy was still alive and on his quest to rid the world of them commies. They striked for better worker treatment in 1941, got fired for striking, made their own studio and that was how UPA started.
And they weren't alone! The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio also took in a bunch of Disney ex-workers following the same strike (and later became Hanna-Barbera). Warner Bros cartoons of Looney Tunes fame was also co-founded by an animator who got booted by mr mouse himself nearly a decade earlier, Friz Freleng.
While UPA's cartoons are by themselves forgotten, as they mostly did shorts some of which are borderline experimental, their influence is still felt to this day. You can find a bunch of them on YouTube for free nowadays. My personal favorite:

Their influence didn't end in the US too, as one of the (if not The) earliest pieces of Japanese animation I posted about here, The little prince and the eight-headed dragon (1960s), was inspired by Looney Tunes among other american cartoons of the era for its distinct visual style.
Moral of this story: Fuck Disney lmfao

Alfred: The cartoon they made of you was a worldwide hit. You know the old meaning, imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery:

Here, child.

It debuted the day after my 5th birthday.
I wish I still had the toys. I could sell them on eBay.
FYI, all cartoons in the 60s were godawful.

this tag on the post about guillermo del toro’s animation takes...oh boy
Tumblr media
spiderman and ninja turtles are massive franchises just like mario. these films are all huge. i’m not saying it’s wrong to appreciate them but you have to step back and take your distances from the AAA animation industry and the massive void in budget and outreach between these films and indie ones. you can’t make a difference between films you like and don’t like when it comes to someone who’s an established filmmaker with a passion for animation criticizing the industry.
art style is the main difference here, og spiderverse having taken legit risks with theirs - but nonetheless being a Marvel film by Sony’s studio... TMNT’s recent film’s style is only possible because og spiderverse made money. the mario movie’s art style is only possible because the last decades of CGI anmation films by big studios made money. mario looking less interesting/risky doesn’t mean it’s technically inferior or not made with love. animation requires whole crews of technical artists, it’s a difficult job who’s pay grade and artistic nature means an industry full of folks genuinely here for passion. the artists behind mario and the ones behind tmnt are working on these films for the same reasons and that is even if those films are commercial animation - which they are.
strange how superhero movies by gigantic publishers become above criticism when tumblr likes them!
one last thing the article OP linked isn’t mentioning - that’s not all he said about these three films. this is a four paragraphs long take on a full masterclass. he also mentioned their success as a good thing, one that shows the potential of animation, one that proved how popular it can be. he’s not shitting for no reason on popular things. i hope the full class will be made available online for more people to watch.
