John Singer Sargent 1925
Sir Hugh Allen
John Singer Sargent is probably my favourite 'American' artist.
Described by his contemporaries (like Jacques-Émile Blanche) as bisexual, he was also known as the painter of the Jews. Unlike other gentiles, he happily painted portraits of his Jewish friends.
Why the quotes on "American"? He was born in Italy, grew up and trained in France, moved to England until he was in his 50s when he was in America for the last years of his life. His parents were American but I also suspect he liked considering himself American because Europe found him too scandalous, America was more accepting (at the time).

I’m always looking for ways to commemorate women’s achievements in history. This morning I was inspired by an article about Sybil Ludington, a teenage girl heralded as a Revolutionary War hero for her actions on this date in 1777 (April 26). After a bit of research it appears the story may be more folklore than reality but I’m choosing to share it anyway for its inspirational value and relevancy to America’s current political chaos. Her story has evolved and been embellished over the years, inspiring Americans to action during times of threats to freedoms that we too often take for granted.
“Ludington was the daugher of a local militia commander. When Col. Henry Ludington received news that British troops were attacking Danbury, he had to stay to rally the response effort, while the messenger who reached him was unfamiliar with the area. So Ludington mounted off and rode 40 miles, warning people along the way, on this day in 1777.”
Her story was “picked up in the twentieth century and has been repeated numerous times, Hunt writes. Its central figure, Sybil Ludington, has changed to meet the times. Ludington has been a patriotic, pro-America youth during the 1950s Communist scares; an ahead-of-her-time feminist icon in the 1960s and 1970s; and a classroom staple drawing fire from conservative groups on the lookout for left-wing politics in schools.”
“Sybil Ludington has embodied the possibilities—courage, individuality, loyalty—that Americans of different genders, generations and political persuasions have considered to be the highest aspirations for themselves and for their country. The story of a lone, teenage girl riding for freedom, it seems, is simply too good not to be believed.”

“Tin Star Tall Tales” Duo Show by Canyon Castator and Jon Young at Volery Gallery in Dubai, UAE
The show challenges our understanding of the American identity through wall works and sculptures. Using different mediums and techniques the artists explore the ways in which the American West Mythology has been constructed and perpetuated, and its relation to issues such as nostalgia, Indigenous erasure, and the glorification of violence.

🎬 Opinion: Will the End of Hollywood Signal the Demise of the American Dream? 🇺🇸 & Part Two: 100-Days Into the The Writer’s Strike, SAG, WGA, and Storytelling.
In the epic saga of Hollywood’s history, a new chapter has unfolded with the recent writers strike that has shaken the very foundation of the silver screen. But in the shadow of this tumultuous battle lies a question that resonates far beyond the red carpets and studio lots: Could the end of Hollywood as we know it also signify the unraveling of the American dream that it has so masterfully…

Today, in “I’ll take any good news I can find”:
A production of Romeo and Juliet with Deaf actors signing their lines has been referred to as bilingual! Not just “accessible” or “diverse” but also BILINGUAL!
This makes me happy because the general idea of ASL (and other signed languages) is that they’re just a manual version of the spoken language. By that logic, Norwegian is just a higher-latitude version of German. Signed languages are languages of their own! With unique vocabulary, grammar, and dialects!

wrt whatever's going on in the sandman tv fandom--the thing about Hob Gadling in the format I am familiar with is that of course you can't ignore the slave trading phase. Because the point of Hob is that he's an eight hundred year old Englishman.
that's his basic concept. there's a reason he's a contemporary of Chaucer; Middle English is when English starts to be recognizably the same language, is about as far back as the English can really be considered to have a continuous cultural identity at all.
hob is self-absorbed and self-satisfied and has almost no imagination; he grows as a person, but not really of his own volition. he is totally normal except that he doesn't die.
he is an everyman, and he is an address to the concept of the everyman, to the white Englishman who expects the everyman to look like him as a matter of course. he's history, but he's the particular history of his nation.
in the 18th century the average Englishman didn't think slavery was too terrible a thing, and in the late 20th (and early 21st) century he does, and this is true even when they are literally the same guy.
how does Hob square himself with himself; how does England carry what it has been and done, these eight centuries? what role do your crimes play in your identity? (how do you make moral judgments, if not by general consensus?) it's not a question the story is meant to be able to answer, just to throw into relief.
and of course, recurring theme: you can never leave your past behind you, but you are always more than the sum of your transgressions.
it's just, does that matter? to who?
