American Pi: a Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers rec list
A few of my favorite stories from a criminally underrated ship. Or two ships I guess, if you consider Bruce and the Hulk to be different people.
Methodology by throttlegainwell (@throttlegainwell) (Hulk/Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 4,508 words)
Summary: The goal was simply to see what this new Hulk could safely do, what might affect his new state of mind, and—okay, whether it was even possible to fit his comically huge penis in anything short of an industrial-sized artificial orifice. Exactly what it says on the tin. Bruce asks Steve to help him test his new limits.
One More Night by onward_came_the_meteors (Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, General Audiences, 8,339 words)
Summary: After the events of Ragnarok, Bruce returns to Earth, but instead of landing in the Sanctum Sanctorum, he ends up finding the former Avengers... including a former captain. Turns out a lot has changed in two years, but maybe that change can be for the better.
i'd like to check out your card catalogue, if you know what i mean by weatheredlaw (@weatheredlaw) (Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 2,242 words)
Summary: Bruce and Steve are starting a book club -- or they would, if they could stop making out every time they're alone together.
Incognito by Trumpeteer34 (@trumpeteer34) (Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, General Audiences, 7,114 words)
Summary: From the kinkmeme: http://avengerkink.livejournal.com/16524.html?thread=37295244#t37295244 After the battle in New York, there's a renewed flood of public interest in Captain America. Steve's OK doing some publicity here and there, but not really comfortable at all being a "dancing monkey" all the time. Sometimes he'd like to be anonymous again, able to just walk down the street and blend in. He turns to Bruce, who has years of experience blending into a crowd. Bruce helps Steve "schlub up" and teaches him some tricks for not standing out. They start going out into the city together to test it out, and as they do, they end up having a really good time together. Enough that they keep doing "test runs" that start to feel suspiciously more and more like "dates"... eventually Bruce/Steve ensues.
Of Rocky Beaches and Painted Dreams by shaolin103 (Hulk/Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Mature, 8,605 words)
Summary: Hulk gets the guy first, or so it seems.
To Taste by felinefelicitations (Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 15,617 words)
Summary: It isn't that Bruce does not like Steve (quite the opposite). It's that Bruce very much can't have Steve, not the way he would like. After all, Steve is Captain America, and Captain America is a paragon of command and control. In other words, not submissive. (Or how Bruce is sometimes the least observant scientist in the world, Steve is shyly in love and tells this to Bruce with food, and the team mostly just wants to make sure their supply of baked goods doesn't dry up.)
every bell that tolls me by thingswithwings (Bruce Banner/Natasha Romanov, Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 19,899 words)
Summary: Bruce Banner, practical masochist. Or: Bruce gets a dom and a boyfriend, but they're not the same person
Worth It by snack_size (Bruce Banner/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 15,844 words)
Summary: “Let’s recap,” Tony said, handing the blow torch he had been using to Bruce. “Recap what?” Bruce asked - they had just been talking about particle physics, and it certainly wasn’t something either of them needed reminder of. “You’ve gone to the museum, you’ve gone for Indian food, you went to see a movie, and what was it yesterday?” Bruce swallowed, glad that Tony wasn’t facing him and was, instead, using a wrench on the latest version of the suit. “Ugh-” “Oh, that’s right, you went to a concert,” Tony said, almost casually, and Bruce sighed. “It was free,” he tried. Bruce likes Steve, and, as it turns out, Steve likes Bruce - but it's all very awkward, and they agree to take it slow.
Heavy Ordnance by Not_You (Hulk/Steve Rogers, Explicit, 2,609 words)
Note: This is part 6 in a OT6 series. I recommend reading all of them because they're great, but this one can be read alone.
Summary: Hulk is a lot to deal with, even for a Super Soldier.

LAKOTA CODE OF ETHICS
1. Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.
2. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy - and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.
3. Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.
4. Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor.
5. Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community, the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.
6. Respect all things that are placed upon this earth - whether it be people or plant.
7. Honor other people's thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to personal expression.
8. Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.
9. All persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven.
10. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism.
11. Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us. They are part of your worldly family.
12. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.
13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.
14. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of ones will within this universe.
15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self - all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.
16. Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions.
17. Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others - especially sacred and religious objects. This is forbidden.
18. Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first.
19. Respect others religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others.
20. Share your good fortune with others.

BOTD: Pied Puffbird
Tumblr media
Photo: Carlos Sanchez
"Puffbirds are oddly-proportioned birds with rotund bodies and huge heads. Pied is small, black-and-white, with an obvious black breast band and a thin white eyebrow. Perches conspicuously, often on a bare branch in the canopy or even on a telephone wire. Usually at the edge of the forest, overlooking an open area."

Wait so you really hate Daenerys for killing slavers ??? Bitch, I thought it was a joke. Wait till you learn what Algerian independantists did to French settlers.
I really do not know who the fuck you think you are talking to because i have never once said that. I think the show condemning Daenerys for killing slavers was one of the worst things they ever did, and i really don’t like the section of the fandom that believes this. It is quick easy and free to simply not defend slavery and it’s super gross when people do in any context. Killing slavers is pretty black-and-white morally justified. I do not really understand the Discourse around whether it’s okay for her to do that. The ambiguity comes from the fact that she does not always successfully move towards liberation, there’s collateral damage, and she sometimes speaks for others when she shouldn’t, but the question of whether ending slavery is a good idea should not at all be up for debate?
I am pretty sure this ask is misdirected or bait because I have talked at length about how my favorite thing about Dany is that she’s a liberator intent on dismantling oppressive systems (some of which her family before her helped build.) She wants to go home, but home never really existed for her, so she has to create a better world!!! She’s makes a lot of mistakes on account of being 15, but she’s trying. It’s an uphill battle because she is trying to uproot the deeply rooted economic and sociocultural system at the core of the enslaver societies in Essos, which would a difficult task even if she was not literally fifteen with terrible advisors and facing active resistance from the enslaver class at every juncture. But it is still worth attempting because ending slavery is a very righteous and morally correct goal.

Double avocet! Who is your favorite?
American avocets range throughout much of North America, preferring habitats such as beaches, marshes, and shallow lakes. They eat crustaceans and insects, which they forage for on mud flats or in shallow water by sweeping their oddly-shaped bills from side to side. They usually feed on brine flies in the breeding season and brine shrimp in the winter. Adults will defend the nest by running around to distract a predator. Chicks are able to walk and feed themselves, and learn to fly 4-5 weeks after hatching.
Pied avocets are migratory birds, breeding across the Palearctic from Western Europe to the Russian Far East and wintering in Africa and South Asia. They forage in shallow brackish water or on mud flats for crustaceans and insects, scything their bills from side to side like other avocets. These lovely birds are known for a conservation success story: they were extirpated from Great Britain in 1840, but successfully rebounded and reestablished its breeding population in Suffolk. This led to its adoption as the emblem of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, a conservation organization based in England, Scotland, and Wales. As of 2018, the avocets’ population has spread to Wales and Scotland as well.

Crisscross Apricot Pi(e) Day
Tumblr media
All about Home Baking : Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Pastries, Biscuits, Muffins, Quick Breads, Frostings, Table Service, Party Menus. 2nd ed., Consumer Service Dept., General Foods Corp., 1933. Call No. Cookery 1933 Al 2nd ed.
More for pie day from our colleague Melanie Lowrie!
"Happy Pi(e) Day! As the resident nerd in high school, Pi Day was always one of those holidays that I enjoyed reminding the rest of my classmates of, and what better way to celebrate than with one of my favorite desserts, pie! (Although, I like all desserts personally, I have a sweet tooth and will never turn down something sweet).
In my capacity as one of the Collection Services Support Specialists for Special Collections, I have been the go-to person for almost all post-cataloging activities since arriving at the Library in July 2023, meaning that I have been getting very close with new acquisitions once they arrive back from Technical Services.
One of the main collections that has been coming across my desk almost constantly since July has been additions to our Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive. In other words, I’ve been seeing a lot of cookbooks! So, when Juli McLoone sent out an email announcing the annual Pi(e) Day celebrations, I immediately knew I needed to participate. The theme being fruit pies, I challenged myself to find a recipe using a fruit not commonly found in pies at the grocery store (apple, cherry, blueberry, peach, you get the idea), and I wanted this recipe to come from a book in our collection.
Enter All about Home Baking: Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Pastries, Biscuits, Muffins, Quick Breads, Frostings, Table Service, Party Menus. The edition in our collection is the second edition created by the General Foods Corporation circa 1933. I thought this was perfect as I started leafing through the book as it seems to have been created to help the home chef learn basic skills and then build upon them with foolproof recipes. While I was searching through the section on pies, I came across the recipe for pie crust with a simple cherry filling. Well dang, I wanted to stay away from fruits you commonly find in pies in the grocery store!
Thankfully, I kept going, because on the final page of the section was the recipe for Crisscross Apricot Pie. Racking my brain, I could not pinpoint a single time in my life where I have had or even seen an apricot pie. Perfect! Thankfully this book was scanned and uploaded to Hatitrust from Cornell University’s collection, so I printed out the two pages I needed and decided to get to work...."

While I could have used a food processor to complete this process, I felt that actually "getting my hands dirty" may be a little more fun.

Carl definitely thought the pie filling was for his dinner. He was disappointed when I said it's people food.
