By the time my Papaw was mining coal the coal companies had stopped using these. Holding it makes me feel closer to him these days. Growing up in the arms of the #appalachianmountains coal was something I was very familiar with. It heated my grandparents home for many years, it fed their family. It fed a lot of families back then. Then it left. Left a lot of people without work, left them feeling abandoned and forgotten about. Some people followed the jobs out of Kentucky, but my Papaw stayed right there in the holler.
