The Devonshire Parure

The Devonshire Parure consists of a coronet, diadem, bandeau, comb, necklace, stomacher, and bracelet. It was commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire for Countess Granville, the wife of his nephew, to wear while accompanying him to Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander II in 1856.

Made and designed by C.F. Hancock with input from Sir Joseph Paxton, the parure incorporates 88 cameos and intaglios from the 2nd Duke of Devonshire’s extensive carved gem collection depicting different Tudor monarchs. It includes carnelian, amethyst, garnets, emeralds, sapphires, onyx, jacinth, lapis lazuli, plasma, sardonyx and diamonds all set in gold and enamel.

The parure has been featured in Sotheby's Treasures from Chatsworth exhibit and docuseries. When not on tour, the parure is displayed at Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Rock Hunting. The Human Condition.

This weekend I drove six hours to meet some friends for camping, and on saturday we went to a claim to look for amethysts and agates. For a few hours, there were four grown ass people (and one dog) digging in the dirt, occasionally calling: "look at this cool rock I found!" It was fun and it was satisfying - and I felt deeply connected to the thousands of generations of humans finding and enjoying pretty rocks. 10/10, highly recommend!

A golden bracelet, with amethyst beads and an ornate clasp with heart-shaped termini, found at the Forum Romanum in Rome and dated to the end of the 6th and the 7th centuries AD.

Byzantine / Late Roman period.

(Looking at the design I would say it's highly likely there were other beads interspersed between the amethysts, something that broke or deteriorated before recovery. I speculate wood, seed, bone or glass.)
