It has developed in a good way and I am very happy that it is starting to be accepted and more (don't take this wrong) polished. Sometimes I start to believe in mankind again ;)

Well, let’s start with my first impressions and the Erie Times-News take on the estimated size. I thought there were a few thousand marchers, but the newspaper and the organizers claim there were around 700. So much for my estimate...but it was nearly double the size of the parade of 2018, so that’s a good thing. Also, the estimate at the Pridefest was about 2,500, and I thought about 3,000, but either way this was the largest Pridefest ever. This I can say, there were a lot of people for an event that just a decade ago would have attracted 25% of this year’s total. And it helps that Mayor Joe Schember, a Democrat, is the most inclusive mayor the city has ever seen. His haters call him Rainbow Joe...as if that’s a bad thing.

As far as the acceptance, I think it’s been there for some time. But just like the LGBTQ community, it's taking some time for supporters to come out of the closet, too. ;-)

Now, as far as becoming more polished...has it? There were many drag queens, many transexuals, even furries...the groups that have always been demonized, hated and attacked. Really the only thing missing was some bare skin, but we’re fairly conservative here in Erie so I don’t think that has ever been an issue. What is notable and perhaps makes the event seem much more mainstream is the growing support from the straight community--which is a significant shift, and damn welcome. I saw three religious groups marching, and that was impressive. I saw one of the major political parties, the Democrats, marching. When I was an elected Democrat Committeeman, there were few of us and our issues were entirely off the radar. I give huge props to the new, younger leader of the party, Jim Wertz, a local college professor and associate dean, for the direction of the local party. 

Sometimes I feel as if I should step back into the fray. It’s been over two decades since I was an activist, and while the better part of me says I need to stay clear for my sanity, I still feel the pull to get involved.

1. How’s your day been?

I have seen better days if I am honest but I am hanging in there. lol

2. What’s the last thing that made you smile?

My pets. My dog named Gabe and my cat named Julie. They always can make me smile. I am fortunate to have them in my life.

3. What’s keeping you entertained these days?

Probably music more than anything. Particularly listening to Venom Prison and the new Ulcerate album at the moment.

Taking a break

No theme for May as I��ll be traveling to the UK to catch up with family and friends, and also meet up with my youngest, Laura, who’s spending some time in Berlin.

You think you heard ‘em all?

Think again! In this series of “The best covers of Toto’s Africa” we had a wide variety from “cool” to “beautiful” to “ridiculous” with the occasional “odd” sprinkled in. What was missing though was 

“FANTABULOUS”

And that’s what this video and this cover is: fantabulous. I don’t know what you have to do to a person to make them come up with an idea like this, and then actually really record it. I really don’t know. And since I’m currently (finally) watching “Game Of Thrones” I saw a lot of horrific things that people do to other people. None of these caused something like THIS though. So apparently there must be worse than... for example... peeling other people’s skin off.

Enjoy this pure horror of a cover as suggested by @amillqvist and @michaeljohnsworld . I thoroughly DID enjoy it. Because I have a really bad taste. And also, to quote Seth Meyers from “Late Night with Seth Meyers”: “You know it’s bad when you made the Germans laugh”. And I laughed.

Speaking of horror: The next installment of “The best covers of...” will, of course, be Halloween themed. And so I’ll be posting...

“The best covers of Michael Jackson’s Thriller” until Halloween.

And there are some AMAZING ones. I can already promise that.
