I absolutely love your writing and saw a few others with stuff like that and I just need to word vomit how adorable of a situation that’d be. I feel like Caine would be ECSTATIC to have a child playing the game! It’s literally perfect for kids! He’d be over the moon about showing them around and chattering nonstop, only to find they’re…gone?!? Turns out, the situation is very overstimulating and adding a terrifying and loud ringmaster to the mix doesn’t really help. Queue the confused yet frantic search for the hiding newcomer, and Caine’s bafflement on how to handle the situation after. Just this over-excitable AI trying to connect with this little shy bundle .u.

A/N: The reader is about 9 years old. Obviously platonic only. Spoilers. You specified headcanons so I did that, but I also have a fic in the works that goes more in-depth. Thank you for the compliment!

Caine

Caine is, as you said, ecstatic to have a new, younger member of the circus. The youngest he's gotten before that is Jax, who was born in the first half of the year and was aged twenty-two. So, getting a member as young as nine in was quite the surprise.

And compared to the now second most recent member, Pomni, it seemed you had a much better transition. You didn't say much--or anything, really--and although it made some of his jokes flop (why didn't you respond?), he took it in stride.

After giving you a tour of the world of the digital circus, he dropped you off back inside to announce the day's activity. Turns out, you would be playing a fun game of hide and seek, with you being the seeker. But as Caine went to point to you, he found you gone. Very strange, considering before that you mostly stood there quietly shaking.

Caine, however, didn't quite understand what was going on. Gooseworx confirmed he's just clueless to how humans work, and so he assumed you must have just been very excited to get started. Because you got a head start, Caine decided to send everyone to look for you.

Gangle was the one to find you. You were hiding behind a set of curtains backstage somewhere crying. She had a lot of empathy for you in that moment, and although she's not very good at comforting people, she tried to make you feel better by resting a hand (or ribbon) on your shoulder.

However, the comfort was short-lived, as soon the rest of the group caught up to you. Everything got overwhelming again, and you started to cry. Gangle gave up on trying to comfort you as Ragatha took over. She was much better at the job, and managed to get you to tell her what was wrong.

You explained you were scared of being in the circus. Understandable for everyone. But you also explained being scared of Caine. You said having a loud set of teeth talking to you was overstimulating (or, in your words, "made you feel bad"). The others had known your silence wasn't one of comfort, and quickly understood Caine was clueless to this, too.

Once they told Caine, he was confused. But he wasn't harsh about it per se. He was disappointed you didn't like his game or self-described fun personality, but he tried to be nice about it. But don't get me wrong; the show is about the characters facing their traumas, so you'll definitely unfortunately have to deal with many more unpleasant-at-best moments.

Yes! Absolutely. I’ve seen tons of fans say Shadow is prickly and would respond badly to hugs, but canon says otherwise. This is a bad reaction:

This is Shadow’s only canonical hug in the games, and aside from jumping slightly from being snuck up on, he seems to like it just fine.

Just look at that smile! He’s happy. He finds it endearing.

It was a hug from a complete stranger meant for someone else, but he still drank it in--and, given that he’d effectively just lost Maria, he really did need it. It’s the combination of Amy’s gentleness AND her speech that changed his mind. After all, if someone as sweet as her sees something in the humans, maybe they’re not so bad.

Shadow doesn’t hate hugs inherently; it’s just that no one hugs him in the first place...

...aside from one person.

Amy’s easily the most affectionate character in the cast. It’s cute at first glance, but there’s a common thread to every instance that puts a damper on it.

She’s always, ALWAYS the initiator.

She puts more into each hug than anyone else does.

She’s always the last to pull away.

The most reciprocated Amy hug I know of in canon is this one:

Which is absolutely adorable...but Amy still initiated. Because it’s always her job. Even the characters who like affection don’t need it the way she does...with one exception.

And this tiny detail just killed me. The little, “wait, come back 😟”

It’s the only time I know of when someone has actually stepped after her like this. In a game where everyone left Amy behind, he wanted to follow her. Mister so-called-prickly didn’t want the hug to end.

Because he’s the only one who needs it as much as she does.

He wants to be held as much as she wants to hold someone else, and no one else is warm and sincere enough for it. Compare these instances:

Sonic thinks Shadow is wrong about something, so he grabs Shadow’s arm to stop him, and Shadow aggressively wrenches it away and leaves.

But when Amy thinks Shadow is wrong about something and grabs his arm to stop him, he gently removes her hand and thinks about what she has to say.

Even when he doesn’t want to be touched, he makes the distinction between “don’t touch me” and “not right now, please.” These are from two different continuities, of course, but I think the point stands. Amy’s special. He’s gentler with her than he is with other people, and that’s consistent across all canons.

Side note: how often does Amy get to feel special like that? I actually really like that Sonic doesn’t place others in a hierarchy of importance, and I wouldn’t change that about him even if I could...

...but Amy does play favorites. I want her to feel like she’s someone else’s favorite, too. I want her to have someone who puts her first and likes her best. I think Shadow’s more than capable of that. I believe he craves clinginess like hers deep down, even if he hasn’t consciously figured that out yet.

I have an entire tag for these two being affectionate. My favorite is probably this one.

Of course, there may be those who say I’m reading too much into one (1) hug. And you know what? Maybe they’re right! We need a bigger sample size. Sega, make more characters hug Shadow, please. Let Rouge comfort him after he confides in her about something. Have Omega give him an awkward metal embrace because he read on the internet that organic beings like that kind of thing. Make Shadow himself pull Silver into a hug when he’s breaking down crying from the stress of always having to be a hero. Show Tails accidentally grab onto him out of fear when they’re trapped in a lightning storm, and when he gets embarrassed and pulls away, have Shadow hold him for the rest of the storm and admit he’s not fond of bright lights, either.

No, no, Amy is definitely still madly in love with Sonic 🤭😁 The main reason she's been acting more tame and not so open about it is really just due to character development/maturity. According to Sega, "she's not [physically] chasing after Sonic anymore, but he's still #1 in her heart!" 💙🩷

Sonic Frontiers actually has a decent amount of Sonamy content, but moreso if you squint. 😁 First of all, it tends to address the situation more from Sonic's end, in his moments of saying romance-coded things like "Wish we were sharing an umbrella, Amy," and "Amy, I should've made up my mind sooner." 🥹

Sonic has always been shy about his feelings and therefore never said anything about said feelings to her, and he's more of an "actions speak louder than words" type of guy, but as she shared her desires to share her love with the world, he worried a little that he may have lost his chance. However, Frontiers also makes clear that his friends' plans to go on their own paths were not permanent. Especially seen in Amy's case when she told Sonic her plans, and Sonic replied, "I'm sure you'll do great. I wanna hear all about it when you get back!" 💙

As a bonus, the Final Horizons update treated us to a bit more Sonamy content as well. 🤩 In a conversation between Amy and Sage, Sage identified Amy as "the one who admires Sonic." Amy, with a bit of her younger behavior slipping out, replied with no shortage of sass, "Oh. And are you a fellow admirer? Hm?" 😂

There were a few conversations between Sonic and Amy, during one of which Sonic tried to tell Amy to take care of herself as well as the Koco. Amy ruefully retorted that she could say the exact same thing back to him. Sonic admitted that she got him there, and confidently stated that they would get through this together.

And of course, after all this, my favorite Sonamy moment of the whole game. After everything was over, his friends were restored, and he reunited with them.

The way Amy laughed and practically launched herself into his arms, Sonic's surprised little "oh!" but the way he welcomed the hug, and kept one arm around her as he high fived Tails and fist bumped Knuckles. 🥰 First of all, it's so obvious Amy had been dying to do that the whole game, and we can imagine it was tough on Sonic to be touch-deprived for an extended period of time once again (after the Metal Virus).

I think the main reason Amy didn't run to hug him when he freed her was because she immediately saw he was somehow struggling and likely didn't want to hurt him. (But then realized she wouldn't have been able to touch him, anyway. 🥲) Although it would've been kinda funny if she HAD tried to hug him and just fell straight through. 😂

I think it's worth noticing that Sonic has had this response to Amy's hugs several times lately. Instead of avoiding them, he lets her hug him and actually puts an arm around her in return. I've got a couple more examples from IDW.

A/N: If you don't specify whether romantic, platonic, etc. I'll just choose what I want by the way. Reader is an advanced (well not really) AI like Caine; they're a helpful assistant that never got past beta testing. I'm not well-versed in characterising Caine yet. No spoilers I think.

Everyone knew what was going on.

Ever since Caine had found you deep in the void, he never acted the same. Mostly because you followed him everywhere, glitching out and asking him questions. He answered every one, no matter how basic or complicated. That itself wasn't too unnatural, but there were other things he did that were.

He was more snappy with Bubble when it was making ridiculous questions (some of which you would ask very similar ones without a problem) and interrupted him or was in general a nuisance. And he was more snappy with the circus crew, too. When they complained about him or the circus in front of you he'd try and "forcefully encourage" them to be more cheerful.

It didn't take much for them to put two and two together and know it was because you were there. Zooble was the one who figured it out first, and was a bit surprised that it took a bit longer for some of the others to work it out. Little ol' Caine had fallen for the broken and rejected helper AI.

Your purpose as an AI was to be of an assistant to Caine, though you never made it out of beta testing clearly. Janky and clueless, you'd ask the most basic questions like what a chicken was. Caine would give you an in-depth explanation, slowly providing you with all the information your programmers couldn't care to give you. He'd shut up Jax when he made a mean comment, not caring if your programmed personality made it so you didn't care.

One day, as Caine was coming to the end of his list of activities, he held a suggestion box for the circus members to submit ideas. Gangle had mentioned to Ragatha what a fun idea it'd be to have a dance and force Caine and you to dance together. Little did she know, Ragatha would love the idea and convince everyone else to go along with it.

Soon, the night of the performance was coming up. Caine had gotten everyone practicing different instruments and styles like contemporary, jazz, and traditional waltzes (much to the dismay of some of the crew). He was quite happy with their obedience and clueless to their plans. You watched on happily, trying to join in every now and then with some of the members to learn more technical skills.

When the nighttime came and the performance was due to start, you and Caine took your seats near the front of the stage. The performances went by as smoothly as a band of mostly inexperienced musicians could. But just as Caine was getting up to congratulate everyone on their effort, Ragatha got up out of her seat and headed to the front of the stage.

"Now, I'd like to invite Caine and our lovely AI assistant up to the stage for a surprise performance!" She gestured her arm towards you both.

Confused--but still clueless--Caine got out of his seat and headed to the stage. You followed close behind. Caine looked around, seemingly unable to make eye contact. It was only made worse as the band started playing a slow-dance song.

"Oh! A slow-dance song," you exclaimed. "I'm yet to learn the dance to these."

"Right! I must have forgotten to teach this!" Caine replied. "Well, I better remember to do it next time. Bubble, make note of this for me--Bubble?" He looked around the room to find Bubble turning to face him, face stuffed with food from the buffet.

"Sorry, boss!" it said.

Caine rolled his eyes. With a chuckle, you took his hand in yours. His head of teeth shot to face you, pupils small.

"It would be more beneficial to my progress to learn it now," you said, voice monotone as ever.

He cleared his throat, saying, "well, if it would help..."

Putting his arm on your waist, you put your hand on his shoulder. Hand in hand, you slowly started to sway from side to side. You could hear giggling off to the side; looking over, you saw Ragatha trying to keep her cool on the grand piano. Jax was smiling wide, too, as always. Even Bubble had moved over from the buffet to dance along out of time.

"So!" Caine started.

"So?" you replied.

"I need to talk to you after this."

"What about?"

"Yeah," Jax butted in, "what about?"

Caine shot him a look.

He said, "I'll tell you after."

As the song came to a close, the two of you let go of each other. Caine was quick to do so, wiping his gloves on his suit pants as if they were sweaty. Leading you past the group of smiling crew, he took you backstage to talk to you. The lights were off, the only light coming from the stage half-blocked by the curtains. Yet despite being away from the stage, you could hear close giggling from the other side as Caine opened his mouth to speak.

"Would you like to go on a date with me?"

I saw a while back you were asked what your favorite interpretations of Shadow and Amy were.

While I don’t disagree (haven’t played heroes so can’t comment there, but have beat SA2) I was curious on your views over Sonic 06 version of Shadow? Ignoring the heavy problems with the game itself, I’m personally a heavy fan of the VA and how he acts.

It may be selfish of me… but I kinda wish Amy got more interactions with Shadow instead of Silver. I get WHY they did it, but I feel like it could of been nice to have them reunite and maybe even contrast the end of SA2 y’know?

Follow-up about Sonic Battle and Sonic Chronicles

I love both Shadow AND Amy in that game!

06 Shadow in particular has been getting a ton of interest in the past few years, and it’s wonderful to see. I considered including it in that first post about my favorites. 06 being such a failure gameplay-wise really screwed things up for the series for a long time. Sega learned all the wrong lessons. No more humans apart from Eggman. No more dark, serious plotlines. One-dimensional characters. No playable characters apart from Sonic in mainline games. None of the others can talk to anyone but Sonic. Obviously there were exceptions to this, but the series lost so much. Sonic 06 is older than most Sonic fans, but we’re only just now getting all of that back with Frontiers, IDW, etc.

This would have been bad enough on its own, but coming off the heels of Sonic 06, it hurt that much more. Sega decided Team Dark weren’t friends directly after their most poignant interactions. Shadow knew who he was. He knew what was important. And he knew he could trust the best friends by his side. When’s the last time he was so self-assured? That’s the downside of the 06 timeline being erased in the end. We know Shadow and Team Dark’s potential, but he doesn’t remember any of it.

That said, I’m ultimately still glad it’s erased. I’d hate for Shadow to go through life knowing the humans would reprogram his own best friend to hunt him down and lock him up forever. It says great things about Shadow, but it makes me like the humans a lot less.

It’s thanks to 06 that I consider Shadow to be the biggest hero in the franchise. This clip encompasses everything that makes his heroism unique:

“If the world chooses to become my enemy...I will fight like I always have.”

Iconic. Badass. I love the way he drops his inhibitors as he talks. This is Jason Griffith’s delivery at its best.

Sonic fights to protect his friends and the planet he calls home, along with the humans and Mobians who all love him, but there are SO MANY people who’ve treated Shadow like filth, and he still protects them. There’s no one else in canon who’s that selfless, and I also like that 06 doesn’t lean on Maria as the reason he does all this. Shadow himself is a good person and does good things for his own reasons, not just because she told him to.

Heroes proved this, too. Shadow didn’t even remember Maria in that game, but he still made the right call. Maria’s important, but she’s not the only reason he’s a good person.

Jason Griffith does a very good job as Shadow here and elsewhere, but David Humphrey is and always will be my favorite Shadow VA. If Jason is an A-rank, David is S-ranked. I’d be thrilled to have either of them back.

You’ll never see me judge anyone for wanting more Shadow/Amy interactions. I’ve thought the same thing with 06, and I love the Silver/Amy bits, too. She has an adorable scene with him AND starts him on the path to redemption. It’s the Amy Rose Special. I also like how she and Shadow inadvertently worked together to turn him around. Amy raised a question Silver hadn’t thought to ask, and Shadow showed him the answer.

But what this demonstrates to me is that this didn’t have to be an either/or situation.

It would’ve been nice for Amy to reunite with Silver and see how he turned things around. They were both there for the final battle, but they didn’t speak to each other. What if they’d had a scene with all three of them together? I hypothesized about that possibility in headcanon #99.

Side note: I just want to say that I think Amy is great in 06. She has the same cute accidental hug/elevator speech combo she used to turn Shadow around in SA2, but people sleep on it in 06 for some reason. On top of that, a lot of fans willfully misinterpret one particular line of hers. And anyone who knows Sonic 06 knows which one that is.

“If I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!”

I’ve seen so many people say she’s a dumb, ridiculous fangirl for this, and I can’t stand it. She’s not saying the rest of the world doesn’t matter, she’s saying that she has so much faith in Sonic as a person that she’d take his side even if the rest of the world said he was wrong. And, uh...she has good reason to! It’s not the first time he’s been falsely accused of something. It’s like these fans conveniently forgot what happened in SA2 the second they saw an opportunity to hurl insults at Amy.

You know what Amy’s line reminds me of most?

“Even if you believe everyone in the world will be against you, know that I’ll always remain by your side. Remember that.”

Yeah. That line everyone loves about ultimate loyalty for someone you care about. The line that many consider to be Rouge’s best. The only difference is that Rouge is a calm young adult talking about a friend, while Amy was an upset young girl whose feelings were too big for careful phrasing and restraint. Combine that with how much hate there was for her at the time, and you have a great, dedicated line absolutely drowned in ice-cold, bad faith takes from the fandom. And Silver needed that fervor to make him question Mephiles, too! It had to be her! It was because he saw how strongly she felt about Sonic that he started having second thoughts. You think a calm statement like Rouge’s could have made him back down from attempted murder?

Much like with Shadow in SA2, it had to be Amy. 06 did a great job with her. Some fans still need to wise up about it. They’ve been recognizing how awesome 06 Shadow is, so maybe, just maybe, they’ll do the same for Amy someday.
