I had the pleasure to work on a bunch of little ammonite portraits some time ago for a new paper that was just published.
Before you ask: no we don't know if their soft tissue looked like this. We know every little about the soft bits of these animals. However if you take into account the myriad of different shell shapes and the diversity of modern cephalopods you will see that there is so much more possible than what you usually see.
These are all from the same region and a handful of localities, and yet you can see how diverse they could get, and we didn't even touch the really crazy ones here.
Here the paper: https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/RIPS/article/view/19942

Can't remember if this idea has been done before, it's a sphaerocone ammonite with a speculative pair of tentacles that tear off easily, used as distraction for predators.

FOSSIL FRIDAY and Happy December!
New month, new topics, possibly fresh snow in the next two hours (at least here in northern Utah).
Today, we are going to learn a little about index fossils!
Tumblr media
Yes, Kirk, index fossils. Index fossils are part of Earth's record book. They are plants or animals that are characteristic of a particular span of geologic time or environment (usually both!). To be considered an index fossil a specimen must fulfill these 4 criteria:
1.) They must be DISTINCTIVE. If you can't identify it easily, it doesn't really help you much. Take Mucrospirifer, a type of brachiopod. That sucker is hard to miss!
Tumblr media
2.) The must have a WIDE geographic range. If it's only found in, say southern Alberta, Montana and Wyoming, it's not terribly useful to anyone else. (Sorry Rexy, you're out!)
Tumblr media
3.) It must be ABUNDANT. There has to be a lot of them. That's why most macrofauna doesn't work. There just aren't enough complete specimens. However, trilobites like this Elrathia are freaking EVERYWHERE.
Tumblr media
4.) Finally, they must have a SHORT range through time. If you last too long, it makes it hard to pinpoint how old the rock is. The ammonite, Pavlovia, only lived during the Late Jurassic Period.
Tumblr media
Index fossils are the basis for defining boundaries in the geologic time scale through a branch of geology called biostratigraghy (one of my areas of study. Love me some biostrat.) Examples of good index fossils include trilobites, brachiopods, and ammonites. All this month we are going to focus on one of these index fossils: Ammonites!
And, as always, if you like what you see here and want more content, you can always check out Minerals, Rocks and Fossil Talks on these other platforms:

Time Travel Question 34: Medievalish and Earlier 3
These Questions are the result of suggestions from the previous iteration.
This category may include suggestions made too late to fall into the correct earlier time grouping. Basically, I'd already moved on to human history, but I'd periodically get a pre-homin suggestion, hence the occasional random item waaay out of it's time period, rather than reopen the category.
In some cases a culture lasted a really long time and I grouped them by whether it was likely the later or earlier grouping made the most sense with the information I had. (Invention ofs tend to fall in an earlier grouping if it's still open. Ones that imply height of or just before something tend to get grouped later, but not always. Sometimes I'll split two different things from the same culture into different polls because they involve separate research goals or the like).
Please add new suggestions below if you have them for future consideration. All cultures and time periods welcome.

Ammonites mini comic by Emmeline Pidgen
Hi everyone! I’ve made a ten page mini comic about a Victorian era fossil hunter and the idea of home. You can also grab it as a free PDF download on my Ko-Fi page.
Over the past few years I’ve done loads of comics work, but I haven’t been able to share it as it was for book pitches/under NDA. I felt like my portfolio wasn’t showing my best work anymore and I was getting a bit self-conscious about it.
After learning about a certain ammonite fact (that you’ll see in the story) I was inspired to make this mini comic that weaves in my love of history, cool fossils and stories about plucky kids! I've also lived in four different counties and about 13 different houses, so I find the idea of what is home really interesting. I carry each of those places with me!
I hope you enjoy it!
