BOOK REC: Aurora's End (The Aurora Cycle #3) - Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufmann
I remember getting the first instalment in this trilogy for Christmas in 2019 and being giddy about it. Finally finishing AURORA'S END and the series was a little emotional, and not just because of the weepy bits in the book.
Authors: Amie Kaufman (website / twitter) and Jay Kristoff (website / twitter) UK Publisher: Rock the Boat Genre: Science fiction, YA See Also: Aurora Rising | Aurora Burning The squad you love is out of time. Prepare for the thrilling finale in the epic, bestselling Aurora Cycle series about a band of unlikely heroes who just might be the galaxy’s last hope for survival. Is this the end?…

do you have any recs for scifi/fantasy? they are also my preferred genres, but i'm not fond of the type of scifi and fantasy that often gets recommended :') nothing inherently wrong with booktok, but we do not have the same taste...
yes absolutely SUCH a fun question 4 me ok let me. go thru my storygraph + pick some out...this list may get long...
sci-fi:
infect your friends and loved ones by torrey peters - novella abt a disease that stops humans from naturally producing hormones so that everyone basically becomes "trans." deals heavily w topics of transmisogyny
how to live safely in a science fictional universe by charles yu - time machine repair guy gets stuck in a time loop
the feverwake duology by victoria lee - a post-apocalyptic u.s. has split into various smaller countries. noam, living in carolinia, is the child of refugees who harbors deep resentment towards the government for its treatment of immigrants. a magic disease that kills 95% of the people who get it but grants the survivors super powers leaves noam as the only survivor in his community, and because his power is incredibly rare and potent he's recruited into an elite military school and suddenly forced to work for the government he hates
this is how you lose the time war by max gladstone and amal el-mohtar - this one blew up in the online sphere recently + so has had tons of people talking abt how they love it or hate it but! i really loved it. soldiers on opposite sides of a time war falling in love
severance by ling ma - story about a woman traveling with a group through a post-apocalyptic u.s. in search of a new place to live
the illuminae files trilogy by jay kristoff and amie kaufman - SUCH a fun series!! it has everything zombies parasitic aliens corporate conspiracy...the books are written in the format of files of collected evidence which is fun + funky; the plot essentially follows various characters who get caught in the crossfire when two corporations go to war over a planet. the first book centers on refugees from the planet trying to escape in a spaceship
villains duology by ve schwab - two college roommates crack the secret to getting super powers and team up to give each other powers; they subsequently become lifelong enemies
fantasy:
a history of glitter and blood by hannah moskowitz - in ferrum, fairies live aboveground and gnomes live underground performing the bulk of the city's manual + menial labor, with the tradeoff that every so often the gnomes will eat the fairies. the city has been functioning peacefully this way for years until the tightropers (a species who spin webs from their mouths) arrive under the guise of "fairy liberation." war between the gnomes and the tightropers breaks out and all but 4 teenage fairies flee the city--the story follows those 4 teenage fairies as they navigate the war. one of my absolute favorite books of all time!!
the last unicorn by peter s beagle - a story about a unicorn who inadvertently overhears a conversation about how there are no more unicorns in the world, so she travels out of her forest to find out what happened to all the other unicorns. another one of my favorite books of all time
the shades of magic trilogy by ve schwab - read this back in 2021 so it's no longer super fresh in my mind but i remember thinking it was really fun especially the 2nd book! somewhat standard fantasy series about a second secret london where magic exists and a girl teaming up with a magician to stop an evil threat, etc etc
the gormenghast trilogy by mervyn peake - (you only need to read the first two books tho tbh) very slow paced but gorgeous writing and such a vivid world!! the books follow an earl and his family living in the crumbling castle gormenghast after the birth of his son and heir, titus groan. titus is supposed to grow up and take over as earl, and various forces conspire to either assist or prevent him from doing so
teeth by hannah moskowitz - a teen boy moves with his family to an island purported to have magic fish that can cure any illness. the fish work and his terminally ill younger brother begins to get healthier, but things get complicated when the boy meets a mermaid who's trying to save the fish
howl's moving castle by dianna wynne jones - such a lovely book <3 quite different from the movie so even if you've seen it the story still feels fresh!
gonna cut myself off here but! hopefully there is something in here that u will enjoy :•)

Thanks Hannah! 💛
4. Favorite science fiction book(s).
The Illuminae trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff! I love how creative they got with the format!
13. Favorite thriller(s).
Ah, you stumbled upon one genre I don't really read! But of the few I've read, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson have stuck in my mind (the latter has such a cooler name in its original Swedish btw, "men who hate women").
18. Favorite unfinished book series.
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin and The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. 😔✊
Book asks! 📕

it isn't actually! i just finished the illuminae files (by amie kaufman and jay kristoff) and basically every "good side" non-main-protagonist character had this happen to them 💔💔💔 it made me discover a new book ick

Recently read: Squeaked out one more book to hit an even 100 for the year. I’ll do a full round-up of 2022′s books in a day or two, but on to my last weekly-ish summary!
I started One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston this summer and at the time, I didn’t feel like fully committing to it for some reason. Sophomore book jitters? Whatever it was, I was a stupid idiot and should always trust Casey because this was absolutely delightful. I don’t think I liked it as much as RWRB, but it such a different book that it’s really hard to compare the two besides the quirky and quip-heavy dialogue. Wish I’d be at home reading this instead of it being my on perpetual airport delay companion so I would’ve been able to properly process some of the more emotional beats. (★★★★)
The Other Side of the Sky was your standard YA sci-fi, which is what I’ve come to expect from Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. They reliably produce fun and interesting books, but Other Side wasn’t as good (or weird!) as some of their previous series. My college roommate sent me a bunch of her books, like, a year ago and this was in the pile, so I figured I should get started! (★★★)
Jen DeLuca’s Ren Faire books are such summer books, so I was bit bummed that Well Traveled was coming out in December. However, it was a nice little escape this week with the cold temps and snow! Well Traveled was more of a heroine-finding-herself story with a romance on side as compared to the three other books in the series; it’s a good read for times when you wanna relax and run off to join the circus. (★★★.75)
Ugh, I hate to end the year on such a bummer, but Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean was just not good. Pitched as The Princess Diaries meets Crazy Rich Asians, Tokyo just didn’t have the charm or development of the former and the ridiculous characters and sly humor of the latter. It read like the plots of the first five PD books were shoved into one book and stripped of everything fun; Izumi’s friend group wishes they had an iota of the personality of Lilly Moscovitz. Paper thin characters, a poorly developed romance (seriously, I said, “Wait, since when are we HERE?” when confessions of ~feelings started happening midway through), and pretty much no conflict made it a disappointing read all around. (★★)

7. Favorite movies/s
Honestly, my favorite movie is any Studio Ghibli movie. But my absolute favorite is Whisper of the Heart
Some other movies that have a special place in my heart are IT (2017) and IT: Chapter 2. I wrote a whole essay for one of my English classes on how IT: Chapter 2 is a bad sequel LMAO but I still like it
That's what I think of off the top of my head
8. Favorite Book/s
I love most books by Jennifer E. Smith but I think my favorite book by them is The Geography of You and Me. Mostly because that was the book that got me into reading outside of class
Also the Starbound Trilogy books by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman. I love how in the last book they all connect and how you get alternating perspectives. They're just so good omg

Hi! What book(s) are you currently reading, or what book did you last read that you enjoyed? I'm always looking for recs (:
oh, hello nonny!! Thanks for the ask!!
I just finished Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson, which was... alright. I'm about to start A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, which I'm excited about.
Not really recent reads, but I'll list some faves under the cut.
Idk what genres you're into, nonny, so I'm going to give you a sampling, jakdjsa.
The Martian by Andy Weir (adult, sci-fi, very funny, lots of language, tho.)
Vicious + Vengeful by V.E. Schwab (adult, morally grey superhero stuff, with an actually good reason for how people get powers and what their powers are. SO MUCH VIOLENCE, so read with caution!!!)
The House In The Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune (light-hearted light fantasy, mlm romance, will heal your soul)
The Illuminae Files by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (YA, sci-fi, some found family, told via documents, takes place in space mostly, gore warning for book two, tho.)
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (adult, speculative fiction, maybe??, post-plague novel about humanity. A work of art as a book.)
Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck (YA, fantasy romance, kind of cheesy, but the mythology aspects are really interesting!! (revolves around Indian / Hindu mythology))
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio (YA mystery, shakespeare stuff all over, kinda fucked up, open ending. TW for death and murder and shit)
The Locked Tomb Trilogy by Tamsyn Muir (YA, sci-fi/fantasy, necromancy, lesbians, and enemies-to-lovers. Mind fuckery. Lots of gore, bc, yk, necromancy.)
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (fantasy graphic novel, found family, lots of fun, and very cute.)
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson (YA sci-fi, series only gets better as it goes on. Slugs are vitally plot-important. No I will not explain.)

BEST DOCUMENTARIES OF 2023
Documentary as a genre can encompass any medium: feature film, TV mini-series, or even podcasts. Here are my picks for the best Docs of the Year:
Honorable Mentions:
Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bassists Human Too?  Sam Dunn
A Compassionate Spy  Steve James
10. Albert Brooks: Defending My Life Rob Reiner
9. Personality Crisis: One Night Only  Martin Scorsese / David Tedeschi
8. Little Richard: I Am Everything  Lisa Cortes
7. Lynch/Oz  Alexandre O. Philippe
6. The Lost Weekend: A Love Story Eve Brandstein / Richard Kaufman / Stuart Samuels
5. A Disturbance in the Force Jeremy Coon / Steve Kozak
Tumblr media
Who would have thought a deep dive into The Star Wars Holiday Special could be so fascinating?
4. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie Davis Guggenheim
Tumblr media
Guggenheim has made a pop culture-soaked doc that is also delving deep into a man facing the realities of a debilitating disease. About time Michael J. Fox got the doc treatment!
3. Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman Morgan Neville
Tumblr media
David Letterman visits Dublin and learns about Ireland from the locals while also talking with Bono and The Edge about U2’s history and it’s every bit as engaging as it sounds!
2. Chasing Chasing Amy  Sav Rodgers
Tumblr media
This is really two docs: one about Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy from the perspective of 2023 and one about director Sav Rodgers’ own trajectory and the influence the film had on them!
1. 20 Days in Mariupol  Mstyslav Chernov
Tumblr media
Filmed from the front lines in the besieged city of Mariupol after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, this doc is at times hard to watch, but it’s one of the most powerful docs ever made about the brutal impact of war.

Canned: Fired @ 59
Canned: Fired @ 59 is a story about a ‘failed writer’ who has no business chasing his ‘dreams’→ chasing his dreams!
It’s also a story about predatory companies and how they contribute to the suffering, addiction, homelessness, and hopelessness we see daily — by exploiting those less fortunate.
It is a story about what happens to someone older and not financially ready to call it a day when he’s fired (replaced) by a company that used a once-in-a-century pandemic as shade.
And it is a story humanizing the exploited.
Canned: Fired @ 59 is a story about resilience and perseverance — the tale of a man haunted by corporate greed but haunted much-more-very-so by a fundamental need to shed light on the destruction left in greed’s wake.
This is a true story.
Elizabeth Strout, Mindy Kaling, Amy Schumer, Kafka, David Sedaris, Hunter S. Thompson, Charlie Kaufman, Lindsay Wincherauk, and a host of real, colourful characters walk into a bar → → and this story comes out.
