Oooh, both corns and kings are wonderful firsts, and come in so many amazing morphs to boot!

My absolute favorite cornsnake morph is palmetto!

And then there's kingsnakes! I'll just include morphs from the species that make great beginner pets.

Lavender albino California kings are my absolute favorites. Pictures never, ever do them justice - they look like darker albinos with dark red eyes.

There's a little western hognose with a naughty name (that he came with and I thought was funny/fitting enough to not change); two Texas rat snakes named Calvin (scaleless) and Dilbert (leucistic); four eastern black rat snakes: Melanora Nightshade, Deathshadow, Lord Ravensdark V, and Amaris Melantha; and four albino blotchless Everglades rats snakes: Kevin, Taffeta, Peachpit, and Mouse.

I do have snakes that aren't corns! I just don't post about them often because they're hard to photograph, don't enjoy handling, or do but require two hands.

For context: I headcanon Draco has MANY exotic animals as pets, some of which being a King Cobra (King), and a Boa Constrictor (Sniper) who oddly get along very well and like.. do not like being separated.

Bonus: he has 2 Burmese pythons, the oldest (an adult) is named Ceasar... and is a girl.. yes Ceasar as in Ceasat Salad. Her full name is, in fact, Ceasar Salad, and his reason was he couldn't think of anything better... the youngest (a juvenile. Definitely not full size yet hence why Draco will be appointing her flower girl) is named Burma.

He also has a cobalt blue (tarantula) who he oh so creatively named Cobalt, he has a Candy Cane cornsnake he for some reason named Jalapeño, and an Albino Cornsnake he named Fettuccine. He laughed for a good hour while picking those names and it stuck. Jalapeño and Fettuccine are also siblings- a brother and a sister. Guess which is the brother and which is the sister. (Spoiler alert: Jalapeño is the sister)

Don't ask why he named some of his pets after food.

He has a ball python he named Bob. The most human name and so far the most normal snake he has... Bob is a girl too lmao- he named her Bob before he found out she was a girl but he decided not to change it so whenever he tells people about her he's just "Yeah I love Bob, she's my pet snake-" "SHE?" "Y e a h."

Draco, casually just: yeah I'm working on helping King get the courage to propose to Sniper... they're dating right now but he wants to marry her one day.

Our favourite twin dragons (mitsuya and draken) are both pretty fluent in english. Mitsuya has more fluency and can speak it with a vey mild accent, kenny on the other hand has less fluency and a very heavy accent, when they’re pissed at mikey & baji toman for being loud or immature or something else along those lines, they will hold conversations in english clearly bringing up the others names while intensely glaring at them

Chifuyu and Hakkai are the the only ones who have a small grasp on their conversation.

What are some really colorful snake species/morphs that are ethical to keep as pets? I know there's quite a few iridescent species of snake, but what about snakes that are just super vibrant and colorful?

Oh, there are so many!

You can get a cornsnake in almost any color you want, with vibrant pinks and oranges and yellows! If you love colorful snakes, check out flourescents.

If you love iridescence, check out kingsnakes. They have smooth, glossy bellies that shine like rainbows in the right light. I especially love the iridescence on Mexican black kingsnakes.

Speaking of kingsnakes, I'm absolutely besotted with lavender albinos. Photographs never do them justice, but they're a lovely dark pink/light purple color with dark red eyes and they're beautiful.

Banana enchi ball pythons. They're stunning.

Speaking of enchi ball pythons, enchi clowns. Probably my personal favorite ball python morph!

If you love colorful and you're an experienced keeper looking for a display snake, Amazon tree boas are the way to go.

There are so many incredibly vibrant and beautiful snakes out there that make great pets!

Hi! Is the albino patternless everglades ratsnake the same thing as the bubblegum ratsnake? When I bought my little one I googled looking for adults and the first one i found was your Kevin, so I named mine Kevin too. You can see him in my pic whispering in my ear to eat the apple. Love your page and your snakes except I live in a state where i can't own cornsnakes and looking at your beauties makes me want one.

Okay so my understanding on this is limited to what I was told by a guy who knew Gino Sassani, the dude who is often credited as having developed the bubblegum ratsnake. According to what I was told, albino patternless Everglades ratsnakes are the same as bubblegum rat snakes, and the name change came about because somebody wanted to obfuscate the fact that they were selling hybrids.

In truth, it was Kathy Love who made the first bubblegum ratsnakes and she did so by hybridizing a wild-caught Everglades ratsnake with the Stripe gene with an albino eastern black ratsnake, and then continuing to breed the offspring back to albino black ratsnakes. When the project was handed to Gino, he is thought to have added more Everglades ratsnake to the mix and popularized the line, and other breeders down the line have bred black ratsnake and/or Everglades ratsnakes back in so they're pretty variable from one line to the other.

I got two of my four snakes (Kevin and Taffeta) from Frank Patinella, having purchased a pair (Mouse and Peachpit) the year before from a seller at a Herpetological Society meeting as just albino blotchless Everglades ratsnakes, and it was Frank who tipped me off that they're almost assuredly all hybrids.

I think Kev and Taffy are higher black rat percentage and Mouse and PP are probably higher Everglades content since their breeder also had wild-type Everglades rats he was working with.

In my mind there's nothing really wrong with making closely-related hybrids within the same genus, as long as you're not releasing them into the wild or misrepresenting them, and you're being certain that people who are taking them understand fully what they're getting. I think with genus Pantherophis in particular there might not be as clearly delineated species groupings as we humans would prefer. I don't know that I would have originally purchased Mouse and Peachpit had I known they were hybrids, but ultimately I'm glad I did.

TL;DR: yeah I'm pretty sure albino patternless Everglades ratsnakes are the same thing as bubblegum ratsnakes.

I'm really sorry that corn snakes are illegal where you are, but we know that it's to protect the genetic integrity of your native population. Just think: you can go out and see corn snakes doing their thing in the wild! That's really really awesome!

I honestly think rat snakes are cooler than corns, though, and they're definitely an underappreciated and very rewarding snake to keep. You may occasionally think of your Kevin as a consolation prize for not being able to keep corns, but I think he's a gold medal through and through.
