He only says this in the anime, so I think it's the opposite: he says this in the anime because he keeps eating sweet things in the manga.

I think the real reason he eats all those things, particularly the bone-shaped biscuits, is because Dr. Andonuts in Mother3 keeps eating "an donuts", donuts with red bean paste on them. He sometimes offers them to Lucas, too, just like Undertaker has offered sweets like those biscuits to our earl.

Also take note that when you look up "Ankou" (a type of grim reaper) on Wikipedia, there is a message near the top of the page saying to click a link on the word "anko" if you are looking for the red bean paste....
