The Gluteus Medius is deep to the Gluteus Maximus and its primary role is performing hip abduction and stabilizing the pelvis in the transverse plane. The Gluteus Minimus is the smallest and deepest Gluteal muscle and performs hip internal rotation. The nerve innervation for the Gluteus Maximus is from the Inferior Gluteal Nerve. The rotator cuff is made of 4 muscles which stabilize the glenohumeral joint and assist in maintaining proper glenohumeral joint mechanics with movements, especially overhead and rotating. The Supraspinatus and Infraspinatus muscles are innervated by the Suprascapular nerve (C5/C6), Teres Minor Innervated by the Axillary Nerve (C5/C6) while the Subscapularis is innervated by both the upper and lower Subscapular Nerves (C5/C6). These are the main muscles that make up the upper leg or thigh region. . @studysongz . The Quadriceps muscle group is made of four muscles: Vastus Medialis, Vastus Intermedius, Vastus Lateralis and the Rectus Femoris. The Rectus Fempris is the only quadriceps muscle to cross the hip joint. . The Hamstrings consist of the Biceps Femoris, Semimembranosus and Semitendinosus. Check out my last post for more on them. . Adductor muscle group is along the medial femur and consists of five muscles: Adductor Magnus, Adductor Longus, Adductor Brevis, Pectineus, and Gracilis. These are strong muscles that pull the femur to midline: Addiction. Hence Adductors* . The Sartorius is an often over looked muscle but it can be easily strained in sprinting or doing high level athletics. It crosses both the hip and knee joints and performs hip flexion, knee flexion, hip abduction and hip external rotation. It also contributes to some tibial internal rotation. . The Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL) attaches to the ASIS (check out pelvic anatomy song) and blend into the Iliotibial Band (ITB) along the lateral leg. Overactive TFL muscles can cause increase tension through the ITB and can lead to ITB friction in the lateral knee. The TFL performs hip flexion, hip abduction, hip internal rotation and knee extension. Its main junction is to help stabilize the hip joint. . . Remember these muscles with @studysongz . . PSIS is the Posterior Superior Iliac Spine which is a bony landmark found on the Ilium. This is a common land mark for physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedic doctors to assess pelvic position and movement. The PISI is approximately at the level of the L5 Spinous Process and is just lateral to the SI (Sacroiliac) joint. The PSIS is the attachment site for the Long Posterior Sacral Ligament and the Multifidus muscle of the Lumbar Spine. The Long Posterior Sacral Ligament runs inferiorly to blend with the Sacrotuberous Ligament and blends inferiolaterally with the Glute Maximus Muscle. A sprain to this ligament is very painful due to the amount of stability this ligament provides. The contents of the Foramen Spinosum are the 6 M’s: Middle Meningeal Artery, Middle Meningeal Vein, Meningeal Nerve of the Mandibular Branch of the Trigeminal Nerve. Osteoblasts are mesenchymal cells of bone that secrete osteoid (non-calcified ground substance of bone) which helps form bone tissues. Osteoblasts eventually become trapped in secreted osteoid and as the osteoid calcifies, Osteoblasts change into Osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are mature Osteoblast cells and are multinucleated. Osteoclast remodel bone tissue according to the stresses applied to the tissues (check out Wolf’s Law!). Osteoclasts eventually transition into Osteocytes, which are the cells of bone.
