The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 2: Birds of A Feather Flock Together
Tumblr media
The pressure's off Kafka as they settle into the long run. A sigh of relief is heaved and they put their nose to the grindstone to get the ball rolling on this season's story: Chise and a "normal" school life. The focus shifts far more towards dialogue and exposition, but I wouldn't say creativity is lost to the episode, just that it shrinks behind conversation and interaction. So, how far does it go, and where is it leading viewers?
Well, as explained, it wants to explore Chise's character and personality in a more normal frame of reference. They want to give Chise people around her age, people with similar interests and (not so) similar abilities to provide her with a way to explore and develop herself.
We get to see characters like Philomela (whom we met last episode) and see how Chise's still true to a lot of herself. She's always willing to help those around her, and offers Philomela some tea and a potpourri for her anxiety. Of course, she doesn't leave without another word, but heeds Elias' advice and asks for something in return in very Chise fashion.
This was probably the best directed dialogue scene in the episode, in my opinion. We get a lot of shots focusing on just one character or the other, but we'll still see the back of the head of the other or something similar. The direction very rarely deviates from keeping viewers conscious of the fact that there is two people taking part in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus, there's some really creative layouts and direction with the characters in general. Stuff like Philomela kicking around when in Chise's arms. Funny enough, even here you can see some of the penchant that Terasawa has for top-down and high angle shots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in similar continuation, I really do love how much emotion is placed in the interaction of characters rather than their faces. Seeing a character grasp a bag slightly tighter, or sit with a downward gaze really gives a lot of life to them that facial expressions can't.
Tumblr media
Following our introduction to Philomela, we get to visit Alice again as we essentially do the rounds to refresh our memories, and we get a really nice and expressive cut of Alice. I just wish the follow up was at least a little closer in detail haha.
Tumblr media
And, while the direction in the first episode for the scene was outstanding, I like that there's a bit of expectation subversion in Chise's hesitation at the door. We don't get the same reflection or anything. Instead, after a pseudo-flashback to her childhood days, Alice shows back up again to introduce Chise to her classroom and set the stage for a later interaction.
But this is also where my major gripes/concerns comes into play. The CGI. They're ambitious I'll give them that much, it's an interesting cut to aim for, but their 3D work just isn't there. It's not polished enough so it comes off clunky and out of place in comparison to the care that's placed in compositing with other scenes.
Tumblr media
Anyways, the episode starts to really slow down at this point, as we introduce and hint at new characters, rehash knowledge and information in regards to magic, and establish the nature of the school. It's pretty par for the course for the dense dialogue and conversation going on, but I do wish we could get a little more than just overhead camera angles to spice things up.
Thankfully, some of the conversation and animation take that into their own hands. Despite the confidence that Alice exudes to Chise for starting school, we learn that she has her own problems as well, which is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
Of course, those problems are, ahem, incinerated shortly thereafter. As a side note, I really enjoy how well they've preserved the chibi style of art for the series.
Tumblr media
Past this point, we get to the goal of the episode, which lies in Chise. Touted as a mage, and someone with impressive ability and power. Someone none of the other people know. She's been asked to show her magic, asked to teach magic, has helped out a classmate and gotten off on the wrong foot with another.
This episode was the culmination of Chise's introduction so that we can start probing her character. How far will she take favors to make friends? How much advice will she take to avoid standing out or being popular? How will she respond to struggles or drama?
It's a great appeal to her character, considering that the first season got her into a "stable" condition. She can now be openly concerned about these types of things, so in a way she's regressed so that she can do it right, and I'm very interested in that. MahoYome's strongest pieces have always been its approach to characters and its approach to magic. So twisting the two into one big blob even more than the first season is a great recipe. I'm very much looking forward to the next episode!

One of the most visually appealing trailers for a series, since honestly my last post on Heavenly Delusion. The director for The Apothecary Diaries is Naganuma Norihiro, an extremely talented director who you most likely know from the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride and his many directed works like Hozuki's Coolheadedness or Kimi ni Todoke.
Despite my bias (The Ancient Magus Bride is one of my favorite series of all time), The Ancient Magus Bride anime is an undeniable visual feast that I just can't take my eyes off of, and it has a very similar effect to what this trailer has me entranced by. Vibrant greens show the fantastical world, and even if The Apothecary Diaries isn't exactly a fantasy, there's eye candy everywhere, and the world they live in is so beautiful-looking that you just want to learn more about it. Naganuma makes amazing use of panning shots, which can be seen in the trailer, and in this case, it showcases the many steps of the female protagonist's story and mesmerizes us in it.
He's also great at storyboarding the chibi moments, as can be seen in the trailer or the many, many chibi shots that feel so accurate to the manga in The Ancient Magus Bride. I have extremely high hopes for this series, as I think Naganuma is an immaculate director choice, and I can't wait to see more from it.
However, if I'm ignoring all of that for a second, it is a little weird how large the credit list is for this trailer, as trailers typically don't even have a credit list. People will probably relate this to the Hell's Paradise anime trailer situation, but I have hopes for the production either way.

Images from this years Kumoricon 2023! Portland is such a fun city, and my good friends Deb & Brian drove down from Seattle to hang out for the weekend. I got to meet voice actors Dani Chambers and J. Michael Tatum (he's really TALL by the way!). Happy to see RWBY cosplay still out there in the wild (Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna) as well as Old and New Vash the Stampede. Even some Barbie cosplay! I flew out on Thursday to PDX (after several delays and a VERY bumpy ride until we passed the Rockies), at lunch at PDX in the same bar & grill at PDX (Hopworks) with the same bartender, whom I greeted. I then went straight to the Oregon State Convention Center after a quick ride on the Red MAX Line Train (light rail). It was late enough in the day that I was able to check into my hotel room at the Hyatt Regency without delay. I dropped off my things and promptly got on TriMet Bus #77 to the local Safeway grocery store, and came back with 2 six packs of PNW craft brew in tow and some distilled water for my CPAP. I got snacky late at night and had a Tuna Poke Bowl at the hotel bar in the Lobby, then I went back upstairs and binged Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix on my iPad until like 4am, then snoozed for a few hours before getting up for the breakfast buffet to start my day at the con. Unfortunately the viewing room had technical issues so some of the anime content I wanted to watch I couldn't at the scheduled times, which was annoying. I got to meet Dani Chambers and had her autograph a character print of a Chibi version of Chise from Ancient Magus Bride, then had a California chicken sandwich at Red Robin and then met my friends at the hotel. They had to go to pick up their badges so I got in line for the AMV Contest screening. It took my friends 2.5 HOURS to clear registration, which was a nightmare. Deb ended up catching only the final category, so we made time to watch the encore AMV Contest screening Sunday morning. They went back to Seattle on Sunday after lunch but I attended the AMV Contest Winners reveal screening which was also fun. We did at least watch the AMV Aftershow on Saturday before grabbing dinner at the hotel restaurant. We watched Kaze-san and Morning Glories (English Dub) in the viewing room Friday evening then went out separate ways. Saturday we did shopping in the Dealer's Room/Artist Alley, then took the Blue MAX Line train over into the West bank side of Portland. We had a sushi lunch then appetizers at Deschutes Brewery (a Portland institution!) then rode the streetcar back to catch the Red MAX Line train back to the hotel. We attended a panel called Laugh Out Loud AMVs that was actually more like a game show and not very good. We did get a few laughs at the end but we kinda wish the whole panel had been that way. We got some to-go dinners from Burgertime and unfortunately Deb & Brian were pooped out and retired to their room while I attended the AMV Classics panel which was GREAT. All in all, it was a great trip and I still love Kumoricon (my 2nd time, back to back) and I really like Portland, Oregon. It's probably one of my favorite out of state cons now. I even worked up the courage to Cosplay as Lum's Dad from Urusei Yatsura. Not the best, I know, but best I could throw together as an amateur on my budget. I did that Friday when the weather was best.

I finished rewatching the first season of Ancient Magus' Bride, and I caught up with what is available of the second season.
And it occurred to me: a Forspoken anime would be excellent solely because Cuff would have the best, most ridiculous little chibi form animations.
Like how Elias' big ol' bone face gets drawn all squishy and cute in funny moments?
That. But Cuff.
It would delight me endlessly.

I hope you had a great graduation! I can't believe you had the audacity to draw after you must be superhuman or something OWO
That, or Picasso had a child and no one knew www
Thank you very much though! I wanna ask you; can you list any other anime you like to watch and/or ships?
And yes, you are right.
Thank you!! Graduation was good but to be frank, the school decorations were....( they tried ig 👽). I could just imagine the class of 2020 graduation ☠️ feel bad for them. Graduating through a computer.... damm.
Also that drawing was simple to draw bc it was mostly simplified chibi esk yk... now if it was fleshed out humans. I would have simply not have answered the question so late into the night. That task would have been done in the morning.
Anime that I like to watch: Aot, InuYasha, Jujutsu Kaisen, Free, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Demon Slayer, Naruto, Kuroko no Basket, Mob psycho, Bleach, The Ancient Magus Bride, Berserk, Monster, Miss aKobayashi Dragon Maid, Sakamoto desu ga, Saiki K, Gintama, Clean Freak Aoyama,The Devil is a part Timer, My roommate is a cat, Kotaro lives alone , Kakuriyo-bed and breakfast for spirits, Code Geass, Erased, Kakeguryi, Haikyu and many more but Im getting tired of autocorrect changing the names. 0 fuks given here.
That's literally what rabbits DO it's how they survive.
Maybe don't have to present England as a cute little chibi if that's what bothers people. I'm good with cranky old England, big bunny ears, and definitely the cute cotton tail!
Yeah for me it’s all about lil iggybun and grown-ass wolfred but it’s in that sexual and non-sexual greyzone that like... Ancient Magus Bride and Kuroshitsuji exist within........

Tumblr media
In produzione presso lo studio ENGI (Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!, La novella alchimista apre bottega), l'anime è diretto da Kazuya Miura (Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs, KanColle: See You Again on Another Quiet Blue Sea) e sceneggiato da Deko Akao (Komi Can't Communicate, The Case Study of Vanitas).
Il character design è curato da Chika Nomi (KanColle: See You Again on Another Quiet Blue Sea, Kemono Michi: Rise Up), mentre le musiche sono realizzate da Akito Matsuda (Sound! Euphonium, Liz e l'uccellino azzurro).
